11ermanently as his own_individual property the wealth which he produces through the legitimate exercise of his energies. Philosophy and common sense and experience declare that without this 1 ight man , as he has been through the ages past and as we find him now., could not perfect the being which God has given him to develop; he could not provide for his future necessities, but must commit himself to the caprice of fortune, become the sport of circumstances, the object of the pity of a soulless public ; he would be re:duced to the condition of the merest slavery; he would be robbed of his personal dignity, {or property which is the result of a man's fair labor is an exponent of his personality, and as all men are specifically equal , no one is bound to work for the enrichment of another.

There are few things that men more naturally abhor and recoil from than slavery or .e nforced poverty; . and there are few acts more admirable than that act of superhuman liberality by which a man embraces voluntary poverty , thus devoting to the common good all that he has and all that his ex ertions produce. But can socialism , which implies a communi sm of goods , all controlled by th e stat e, can socialism, I ask, with its atheistic principles and its m er e milk and water altruism , produce that heroism of v irtue in th e mult itude and make it contented t o live th e life of poverty-vowed m onks? Very certainl y, so cialism , look ed at from this view point, is th e dreami est of dream y ut opias. Sin ce it cannot produ ce th e r enun ciation of p ersonal tast es, th e effective mutual love an d co unt less ot her virtues w hich al on e co ul d sustain its life, it is th e m os t unr eali zabl e of sc heme s.

In spite of its maudlin profe s,;ions of human iellows hip, its bold ass umption of purely panth eisti c principl es l.rands it at the v ery outset as the most cheerless of antiquated errors tim e and again refuted by the champions of right reaso n.

Socialism -gratuitously assumes and declares that all th e t~1em­ bers of society, from the s imple fa ct that they are m embers of society, have an equal right to all the goods that are found in soc iety; <.. nd this fatu ous opinion impli es the further ass umpti on that all m en are not on ly specifically but absolutely and individually equal, ::·o that, according to these doctrines, the most indolent vagrant could with ri g ht and without ever lifting a finger, declare: "The wo rld owes me a liv ing! " and, indeed, · we should all acclaim as our f;Uide and light the infam ous Proudhon, than whom th ere have existed few more outspoken revo lu tionists, and loudly should w e ap plaud as the fir st article of our socia l creed hi s splendid ax iom: ''P rope rty is thef t !" .

Now, this socialistic claim of the equal rights of all m en to all til e a cqu ir ed goods of society is a fal se claim; it denies th e inali ena-bl e ri g ht which eve ry indi v idual has to acqu ire private property, a ~ac r ed right, which the enforcement of socialism wou ld most wan - · to nl y vio lat_e. Socialism, acting out this erroneous postulate, would mos t unju stl y co mp el all property holders tc, share their justly earn- . r~cl goods with the other m embers of society and this , too, without r e:eiv ing any compensation. Ag-a in , sociali st s, in their enthusiasti c pleading-s to be allowed to realize th ei r dreams of social reform, clasp to th eir souls the illusive hope that in th e id eal commonwealth which they promise us zJl men wi ll be swayed by potent motives of pi ety and of m o deration , of justice and of prudence. But, we b eg- to re mark th_at it is one thing- to s upp ose these beautiful v irtu es as alr eady exist ent and quit e anothe r thin g t o produce them. And certainly th e socialism that is panth eistic, or , rath er , g-od less in its principles, can offer m en no r easonable motives for th e practice of any virtue whatever.

We have se rious r eason s to think that socialists understand littl e eno u g-h of the moral and r elig-ious principles which are the stems upon wh ich soc ial vi rtu es flourish. And why are we forc ed to t hi n.k thu s of social is t s? Becau se in the develv;:m1ent of th eir mate ri a lis tic th eo ry of economic evolution th ey ass~me that all things 9- re in a state of co nstant fluctuation . and cha nge; that not C'.-en me~a-phy s ical , m oral 2. nd r elig ious principles a r e stable, but must adjust them selves to the chan g-eful eco nomic condi t ions of every ag-e. Now th e merest tyro in philosophy knows th :?.t th e true principl es of meta-phys ical, m or a l and r eligious science are as eternally fix ed and immutable as the s.tars in the h eavens, a_nd histo ry attests that w h er eve r the tran sformin g- power of th ese principles have been exerted the economic o rd er has b een co rr espo nding ly modified, refined a nd streng-thened.

Since th en it is cl ear that the socialisti c dream is as unrealizable as it is un sc ientifi c, we can not be blam ed if we do not hail it as the g-od-sent panacea for the socia l ill s that afflict the b <? dy politi c.

It is and must eve r r emain in eff ec tual as a r em edy for the natural and n ecessary inequalities between rich and poor. I suppose that the life of every student is everywhere punctu · J.ted with important events, facts _w hich are like g lorious sunb ursts, that cheer and enliven college life; facts w hich, like the beauteous · springtime 'out-blossoming of all vegetation, betoken s the generous life and growth of the institution itself.

Our own college career has been marked by many of those . ·profoundly impressive incidents w hich , after sweet ening and comfort ing u s and strengthening the institution, wi ll ever as cherished ·memories cling to our so uls, as do es the tender ivy to the sturdy oak.

THE MADONNA IN THE "PARA,DISO."

F th er e is one thin g in the "Divine Comedy" that deserves our commendation more than another, it ce~tain l y is the loftiness and profundity of the ideas which th e pof.t th ere presents to his r eader s. This is noti ceable throughout the w hol e work, but in Paradi so it is especially remarkable; so much so in fact that at th e end of each canto we are almost forced to cry out in the words of Scripture: "Eye hath not seen , nor ear heard, neither hath it enter ed into the heart of man, what things God hath,, prepared for th em that love Him. " Thus the conviction is forced upon u s that this is a work of ideas that far transcend all actual experience. Another thing that forcibly strikes us in Paradiso is the great devotion and love with wh ich this Christian poet speaks· of the different 'characters which he meets in the "Eternal Circles." But of all these, none except the " Eternal Light" Himself r eceives such homage as does the "Virgin Mother, daughter of her Son:" The fervent homage he pays to this "Fair Queen of Heaven" and the t end er regard he has for her power as intercessor with h er Di-

These few lin es alone are suffici en t t o coi1vince any one of Dante's intense religious fervor, and of his devotion in particu'lar t o the Moth er of God, for here we find him acknowledging this by ha...: bitual invocations to the Queen of Heaven, "Both morn and eve, with the might of all his soul." We also see here what an exalted opinion h e had of Mar y's .glory in heaven, and how fittingly he has e - ,c rowned wit h t h e circling motion of the angel Gab riel, "the creE)s~t." Afterwards h e calls h er , "Goodli est sapphire, that inlays th,e floor of Heaven," and then immediat ely shows u s how the angels hono r this bright jewel, by the words ·of Gabriel: "Angelic Love I am, who thus with hovering flight enwheel The lofty rapture from that womb inspired, Where our desire d1d dwell: and round thee so, Lady of Heaven! will hover; long as thou

.. through the blessed realm, he meets St. Bernard, who tells the poet that M?-ry is sovran of heaven and that it is through her alone that we must expect great favors. Thus in canto XXXI. the Saint urges Dante to ''Search around The circles, to the furthest, till thou spy 路 Seated in state, the queen, that of this realm Is sovran."

Then again he beholds the vision which a short time before ~'his eyes were unable to pursue," for he says: "Straight mine eyes I raised; and bright, As, at the birth of morn, the eastern clime Above the horiz_o n, where the sun declines; So to mine eyes, ;that upward, as from vale To mountain sped, at the extreme bound, a part Excelled in lustre all the front opposed.

And as the glow burns ruddiest o'er the wave, That waits the ascending team, which Phaethon Ill knew to guide, and on each part the light Diminished fades, in tensest in the midst; So burned the peaceful oriflamb, and slacked On every side the living Baf!Ie decayed.

And in that midst their sportive pennons waved Thousands of angels ;.in resplendence each Distinct, and quaint-adornment. At their glee And carol, smiled the Lovely One of heaven That joy was in the eyes of all the blest."

Those lines show us the idea Dante had of Mary's great glory in heaven; to his mind she is infinitely more resplendent than the c.Ombined brightness of all the other spirits, in fact , she is as far above the rest, to use the poet's words, as the uppermost point of a mountain is above the vale. Another thing he wishes here to show us, is that Mary, in a great rneasure, contributes to the joy of the b~e路st, hut h e despairs of fittingly describing her dazzling b eauty.

COMMENCE:MENT EXERCISES. H E thirty-fifth annual commencement exercises of St. Viateur's College took place on June r8, before an audience which numbered close to fift een hundred. Our spacious gym nasium hall afforded suitabl e accommodation for such a vast gathenn g. Relatives and friend s of the students, alumni and ben efa ct ors of th e college, clergy and laity came not from Illinoi alone, but also from th e n eighboring states, to give by th eir presence anoth er ext ernal sign of their approva l and encouragement of th e good work don e for our b eloved country by su ch Catholic institutions of learning as old St. Viat eur 's. S uch a large audience, no doubt, was one of th e m ost important fa ct ors in adequately r ealizin g the long 8ncl anxiou sly anti cipated joys of comm encement day. Th e students w ho wo rk ed hard and p erseve ringly durin g th e yea r we r e but fitt ing ly r eward ed when, in the presence of su ch an appreciative a ud ienc e, a prin ce of t h e ~ c hurch place d th e deco ration of th e L egion of Honor, a we ll merited medal, upon th e breast s of those st urdy lJer oes who yield ed not durin g th e past yea r t o the se du ctive voice or to the allurin g example of indolence.

O f the m any reaso ns wh ich made students and professors a like an x iously desire commencement clay, none was so potent as th e exp ect ed opp ortunit y of seeing and h earing our esteemed a rchbishop , Mos t R ev. J. E. Q ui g ley , D . D., and of presentin g sentim en ts of love, r esp ect and loyalty to thi s prince of the church, whose work in promoting Christianity and all that that word implies, is known b y th e success which has marked hi s effo r ts in opposing dangerous social evils, in prom oting Catholi c edu cation and, in a word, in doing a ll for the extendi ng of th e Kingdom of Christ that is to be expect ed from a successor of th e apostles. The pleas ur e of his lordship's presenc e, however , w as denied us b y r easo n of Clrcum_5;tances w hi ch co uld not be ave rt ed. Althoug h th e ab sence of His Gra ce cause d a feeling of di sappointm ent to min g le with th e joys of th e occasion , still this feelin g was somewhat m itigated by the bop e that his coming 路a t an early period will do much to induce th e stud ent s of nex t year to put forth every effort to m ake th eir stay at coll ege a fruitful one. The Viatorian. archbishop , we had the honor of throwing open our doors and of extending once more cordial greetings to his worthy representative, Rt. R ev. P. J. l\!Iuldoon, D. D. The exercises which marked the closing, of the year '03 were dissimilar from tho se of prece ding years. 'The chief aim was to 1.1ake them as int eresting as possible without fatiguing the visitors by detaining them an unr easo nabl e length of time, as is the custom of most commencements. The program.me was well adapted to this end: to intere t the v isitors and to g ive them a fair exhibition of th e wo rk , of the stud ents during the past year. The choir, under the expe ri enced leaders hip of Rev. A. St. Aubin, C. S. V. ,r enclered "The Crovvning of the Harp," and another se lection from St. Columbkille's ope ra in su ch a spirited manner that it was evident from th e p leas ure v is ible on the countenan ces of the auditors during the s inging, that the mu sical part of the ente rtainm ent had the desired effect up on them . The oratorical and the eloc utionary numbers of the programme we r e also received with a degree of satisfaction evinced b y the loud and fr equent applause of those asse mbled.

Afte r th e ove rture, w hi ch was artistically rendered by Mr. G. Iviartineau an d his well-trained coll ege orchestra, Mr. W . J. Cleary, accompani ed by four minims, r ead the Address of \ A! elcome to the presiding pr elate, Bishop Muldoon. Then th e college choir, sixty in n umbe r , sang that beautiful selection alr eady m entioned, " The Harp Choru ." The last notes had not yet died away when a r ound of applause announced th e people's delight. After the singing l\/[r.

J. Car ey delive r ed the bachelor's oration for the cla ss of '03. His subject was "Socialism." The thorough and logical manner in ¡which b e deve loped his thoughts, the oratorical ability which he ctisp laye cl in the delivery of his oration and the timeliness of the subj ect, sec ur ed for him the intense and undiv ided attention of th e audience. T he V aledictory was delivered by Mr. E. Fitzgerald.

His composition was fittingly deli ve r ed m a manner w hich guaranteed his futur e oratorical t riumph s . H e also brought forc ibly befor e the minds of his h ear ers the necessity that exists in t h e world today for t rong men , men of conviction, men who not only know what is right, but who have the courage to act in accordance with their know ledge, men w ho ar e ever ready and willing to fo llow the g ui ding tar of truth , no matt er how man y may be the deceitful glimmering that shine on e-ve ry ide to lead them away from the path s of rectitude. The failure of th e oratory class to crow n t h eir year 's work in a cr editable manner is clue to no oth er cause than the fear w hi ch some of the best writers in the class ente rtained of their 路delivery. A few m embers Je ss gifted in composit ion, but possessed of acknow ledged elocutionary ab ility, were looked up on as those in whom the co nt est wo uld center. The annual elocution contest took place in the Seni or's Study hall, on Jun e 12. The judges chosen for the occasion vvere R ev. J. Bergeron, pasto r of Notre Dame church, Ch icago; Rev . J. E. Lab er ge, D. D., ;:mel Rev . E. L. Rivard, P h. D., D. D . The live ly competition with w hi ch the contestants entered into the arena can b e inferr ed fr om tlle remark of the spokes man of the judges, Rev. ] ..

Bergeron, nam ely, that it is one thng to be ab le to know a good thing when one sees it, but quite another thing to be able to choose that which is the best from severaL good things which, in point of perfection, are almost equa l.

A better display of t h e imitativ e powers of the yo un g than that g iven by the minims on this occasion could scarcely be expected.

They so faithfu lly r ep roduced th e g racef ul and appropr iate gestures and the judiciously modified tones given them by th eir teacher, that one acquainted w ith the latter could recogni ze the master in the wo rk of his p upils. Intensity of feelin g, g racefulne ss of action and clearr:iess of voice were the quali ties which enab led l\1aster A lbert Bin路en to interpret that dramatic extract from the operetta, St. Colu mbki ll e, "Th e Death of J<"iernan," in a manner which won for him the :JVIcShane meda l. Hb rival, Master Orion Ford, m ade th e stru ggle for s upr em acy a seve re one. In point of naturalness, Orion certain ly outclass ed the other competitors. The spirit w ith wh ich this yo ung elo\: uti onist interpreted his comical piece路 brought forth the frequent app lause of the audi en ce. Though not lacking in any of the fin e points of the elocutionary ar t, Master Ford did not disp lay that perfection w hi ch comes from long practice and w hi ch , together w ith th e qualiti es already m entioned, enab led l\1 aster Birren to come off v ictor. Their r espective averages were 93 and 92 2-3. The others who entered th e minim contest, especially l\!Iasters Elmer Rus sell and Edwin Lister, dese rve a spe/ cial m ention, but space is lacking, hence we must content ourselv es. w ith a mention of th eir nam es and th e pieces -wh ich th ey spoke.

The competition in this department wa~ t路qually as harp as that of th e minims. l\/faster Geo rge Bou r dea u interpr et ed hi s piece, "The Dying Alch em ist," in a manner which m ade a large number of the audience con~ectly anticipate the decision of the judges . The spirit and earnestness whi ch h e put into th e wo rd s gave to hi s interpretation a r ealism whi ch convinced the a ud ie n ce th a t h e thorough ly underst ood his part. The qualities w hi ch made his co mp etitor , ]\!faster Charl es u st, a close rival for honors are hi s g ra ce in action, hi s distinctness of a rti cul ation a nd the wond erful carrying powers of his vo ice. Even in the most subclued w hispe r , every syllab le w hi ch he utt er ed could be di stinctly h eard throughout the halt ]\/faster J oseph Legris did not a llow his more fortunate compeitors a very noti ceable lead. He int erpreted his extract fr om Rienzi in a manne r w hi ch , in an ordinary contest, wo uld have wo n the prize .

T his company is composed exclusively of M inim s and the cl everness of those littl e fe llows w ith the swo rd is we ll known to all who have eve r v isit ed the coll ege. The judges, after taking into account th e most minute 路defects in tact ics and manual, award ed the /[ oody pri ze swo rd to Private Thomas Harrison , and the second prize, the W ha len gold m edal, to Li eutenant A lb ert Birren.

The n ext event was the dri ll for a bea utiful silk p ennant, g iven

by Colonel W. J. Cleary to the best drill ed company of the S. V. C. battal ion. This was awarded to company C, with companies B and D n ext in merit. The officers of the triumphant Bernard Ligh t Guards were R. Mudd, captain; Jo e L egri s, fir st -lieutenant; A. F lageole, second lieutenant, and R. Cunningham , se rgeant. This is th e fir st tim e in yea rs that a Junior company has been s ucc essful in this competition, and the members of that department celebrated their s uccess by carry ing Capt. 1\IIudd around the campus on their sh oulders .

The company drills being finished, the non-commissioned officers' and privates ' drill for the Moody medal took place. This medal was we ll contested, but finally was awarded to Private Charles Badiancl, with Private John Spratt next in merit. The commiss ion ed officer s' drill for the Rowan military medal, brought the prog ramm e to a close. This medal was awarded to Capt. Raymoncl M udd, w ith Li eutenant A lb ert Kelly a close second.

O ur thank are clue to Capt. Ford and his efficient officers, who cam e clown fr om Chicago to judge the contest. Cap tain Ford and his .a ssistants have had the kindness to p erform thi s service for u s for several yea rs, and ever, at each re cu rrin g contest, have these masters of th e military art, w ith un erring judgment, awarded the hon ors to whom they were clue.

The article on " Duty," penned in a strong Engli sh style, m ust n eeds cxe r c i ~ e an elevating infl u ence on a ll w lio r ead it. "Confucius a n d ( 'onfu cianism ., is a sc holarly essay on the life and r eli g ion of th e Chinese sage, cont r asted w ith t hose of our D iv in e R edeem er. " The Penitent" is a poem, whose lofty sentiments and gen er a l excell en ce commend it to every r eader. The ex-colu mn is, as u su al, judicious :n its remarks.

In the Spectator for May, from Cap ita l Un ivers ity, Columb us, 0., the ex-m an has the fo llowing to say abo u t t h e exp ulsion of t h e r elig ious congr egation s from France. " It is our opinion that the Catho li c ch urch scarcely can, with justice, complain, for she herself has b een g uilty of most terrible cru elty, and especially -in France.

Hence it is that wewho constitute the rising generation of St. Viateur's students admire that we may initiate and applaud that we may encourage, our· 1 redecessors who have come to an epoch in their lives ~nd areforced to look back upon the paths which they have trod and to let their eyes rest upon the monuments to their zeal, activity and talent that mark their onward course. From these retrospectiveglances and the merited appreciation of those who follow as well as of those who ac<;ompany them, they cannot but renew their ener-· gies, gather fresh courage and thus ·gird them selves to surmount those obstacles which would prevent them from multiplyi1i.g those· generous achievements which thus far have stamped upon their active lives the seal of success. Dr. Abner Niarcotte, Concordia, Kansas, a former student of St. Viateur's, was recently united in marriage to Miss 1\IIcCarthy, -Omaha, Neb . Friends at the college extend their felicitations to the young couple and wish them a long and happy life in the sweet bonds of matrimony.

Very Rev. 1\t:I. J. Marsile, C. S. V., attended the closing exercises of St. Charles parish sohool on June 23. He expressed him~elf as being delighted with the entertainment and especially with the manner in which the youthful artists presented their beautiful operetta, the "Tyrolien Queen."

With sincere regret we are called upon to chronicle the sudden 路death of Mr. Fred Marcotte, of Kankakee, Ill. He died on Saturday, July 4, and was buried from Bourbonnais church, July 7路 The bereaved wife and family of M r. Marcotte have our heartfelt sympathy in this their hour of sorrow: May his soul rest in peace.

Mr. J. Granger, '99, has successfully stood the examinations at Springfield, Ill. , for admittance to the bar. At present he is engaged in business with his brother, Lawyer A. Granger, one of th e most successful lawyers in this state. Congratulations and best wishes to one of the former editors of the Viatorian.

During his vacation the monsignor will travel through parts of Canada and the eastern states. We hope that this rest will benefit the eyesight of ou r esteemed benefactor, as he is under the treatment of an oculist, who forbids him to read any more than is absolut ely necessary, on account of the delicate condition of his eyes.

Rev. T. ]. Gaffney, who was ordained from St. Viateur's college in 1900, fini sh ed his post-graduate course at the Catholic University of Washington this year. The old mam altar was removed from the chapel and in it'3 place was erected a magnificent marble altar. On this, mass was celebrated for the first time on Commencement Day. C n M ay 9 the fast academy team from :Morgan · Park lined up .against the 'Varsity in the best game seen on the college field this year. Both pitchers received excellent support, but Capt. Martin was the more effective, allowing but six scattered singles. The infield work of both teams was fast and snappy, McDonald, Sheil and T. Legris playing an especially noteworthy game throughout , while Atwood, at Short, and Garret, in the center garden, displayed a high degree of academy form. The contest was devoid of any detracting features, being played vYith a vim and dash which smacked ·of the professional.

The season closed on Saturday, June I3 in one of the best games of the season. The Ignatians were reinforced by Gertenrich, the state leaguer and a pitchers' battle ensued, in which the honors were even ly divided. Each t eam made six hits , but the 'Varsity slammed the leather at opportune times, which won for them the game. St. Ignatius was nev er dangerous, although they played .::t ~nappy game. :M artin carried off the honors by two remarkable stops at s hort and by effective stick work.

In the anna ls of Junior athletics there hav e been many good -bas e ball teams and many select Senior teams hav e r eturned from ihe south diamond min us their scalps. But this y ear the Juniors had the a u dacity to co m e to the S enior diamond and chall enge the s econd team. They play ed sev era l games and often the Juniors returned with vi dory p er ch ed on th eir standard.
