Catalogue of St. Viateur_'s College.

PROSrEC.TUS. ~ T.

VIATEUR'S College is situated at Bourbo~nais Grove, ~ Kankakee county, Illinois, It is distant about fifty miles from Chicago, and two and a ha] f miles from Kankakee c'ity , just on the verge of an extensive grove of ¡forest trees . and hard by the banks of the Kankakee. The site is peculiarly beautiful and healthy. Near enough to enjoy the advantages of a city when n eeded, the college is far removed from its distractions and moral dangers. This institution, founded in 186'5, was raised to the rank, and invested with the power and privileg es of a university by an act of the State Legislature, in February, 1874. It is under the direction of the priests and brothers of the congregation of St. Viat.eur. The Professors and Tutors reside in the institution, and devote themselves entirely to the duties of their profession , forming but one family witb the students, and exercising a constant supervision, friendly in the highest degree to discipline, decoru_m, and good morals. The system of education embraces: The Commercial Course, Classics, Sciences, Philosophy, and Theology. No student is allowed to graduate or take his degrees without having gone through the prescribed course and having given clear evidences of his worthiness, ~oth at private and public examinations. Those who graduate as Bachelors of Arts may, on proper application made to the President and Faeulty, receive the degree of Master of Arts, provided they shall have devoted at least two years to literary pursuits. The study of letters is helped and encouraged by an excel1 lent Circulating Library. (We take this occasion to thank friends for contributions already rece, ived and to solicit further patronage for our library.) The College grounds are large and well shaded, having ball alleys, and abundant room for all games and athletic exercises. The building can accommodate three hundred students.

Catalogne ·of fit. Viateur's College.

The balls and rooms are spacious, airy, and comfortable. The , College is heated by steam and is furnished with water from a spring by a complete system of water work . The diet of the students is always wholesol?le and abundant. In sickness they are nursed and watched over with parental solicitude, and all the care that parents can desire is given to the wardrobe, dormitories, and all those departments on which health comfort, and economy depend. N. B. - The infirmary, the refectory, the laundry, and dormitories are under the care of the Sisters. There are two sessions, one beginning on the first Tuesday · of Septem, ber, the other on the first of February. At the close of each ses ion all the classes are examined. On both occasions bulletins are sent to parents or guardians informing them of the standing, progress, application, health, etc. of their children or wards. At the close of the academic year candL dates for degrees are publicly examined. At the commence~ ment degrees - are conferred and premiums and medals are awarded. Students may enter at any time, and will be charged from date of entrance; it is much to their advantage, ho ever, to enter at the opening of the f?eptember se.ssion. Should a student leave the College before the close of theses ion, no deduction will be made except in case of protracted sickness (of one month), or dismissal. A student who has been at any other institution must produce a satisfactory recommendation from the Superior thereof. The classes a tudent is to attend will be determined by an examination. He mav afterwards be promoted £or merit. While the government of the College is mild and parental, the laws of good order, propriety, and morality are strictly enforced. The moral influence of instruction, persuasion, and · encouragement i primarily and mainly relied on, and is seldom found ineffectual. Visiting days are Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoon. Good accommodations for parents and friends is easily obtained in the village.
