It ·is distant about fifty ' "tnHes :from Chicago, and two-and-a~half miles from Kankakee city, just ori the verge of an extensive grove of forest trees an·d· hard by the banks of the Kankakee. The site is peculiarly· beautiful and healthy. N_ea,r enough to enjoy the advantages of a city when needed, the· college is farremoved fr'om its distractions and moral dangers. . . . 'rhis Institution, founded in 1805, was· t,:iised to tht- rank, and invested with the power .and privileges, of a University by an act of the State Legislature, in February, 1874. It is ·under the direction of the priests Gnd brothers of the congregation of St. V{aieur. T,he Professors and 'l\itors reside in the Institui1on aml devote themselves entirely to-the duties . of · their ·profession, forming but one family with the students1 and exercising a constant supervision, friendly in the highest degree t6 discipline, decorum ,and good n10rals. · The system of education embraces: the Commercial Course, Clas_sics, Sciences, Philosophy, and Theology. The College grounds are large and well shaded. having ball alleys; and abunda11t rooni foi: all games and .athletic exercises. The huildings can accomodate three hundred studen.ts. The · h;}lls and room~ are ,~pacious, airy and comfortable. The college is heated by stean1 an(l is furnished with -water from a spring by a complete system of water works. A student who has been at any other institution must - produce a satisfattory recommendati,,n fi·om the Superior thereof. The classes a student is to attend will he determ ·n d by an exam·. nation. He may afterwards be promoted for merit. While the govennent of the College is mild and par€ntaL the laws of good order, propriety and morality are strictly enforced. The moral- influence of instruction, persuasion a,nd. encoura.grnent is primar1y and mainly relied on, and :s seld_om · found ineffectual. - ~ Visiting days are Sunday; Tuesday and Thursday after noon.
