St. Viateur's College, situated at Bourbonnais Grove, Kankakee County, Illinois, is distant about fifty miles from Chicago, and two-and-a:-half miles from _Kankake.e city. J u,s t on the verge of an extensive grove o( forest ,trees and hard•' ' by the banks of the ' t Kankakee, the site is singularly beautiful and healthy. Whilst near enough to enjoy all the advanta,~es of a city whan needed, yet the college: by itf; position, is far enough removed from worldly distractions and rr:.oral dangers. This Institution, founded in 1865, wos raised to tbe rank and invested with the p<;>wer and privileges of a University by an act of the State Legislature, in February, 1814. It is under the direction o,f the Priests of the 'Congregation of St. Viateur, with whom fa !'\,ssoeiated an efficient corps of other ecclesiastical professors. The Professors and Tutors reside in the Institution and devote themselves entirely to the duties of their profession. They form hut one , family with the students and exercise a mild and paternal, yet, firm and constant supervision, friendly in the highest degree to · discipline, decorum and good. morals. The system of education ern braces; the Classical and Commercial Courses, the Sciences, also Philosophy and Theology. No student is allowed to graduate or take his degrees without having fiP,t gone through his prescribed .course . and only after giving decided evidence Qf his fitness both at private and public· examination~-r Those who graduate fS Bacheior of Arts may, on proper application made to , the President a.i:id Faculty, recetve the degree of Master of Arts, provided they shall have devoted at least two years to literary pursuits. · The study of letters is helped .a nd encouraged by an excellent Circulating Library. contributions alrea.dy received an.d solicit further patronage for our Ii brary.) The College grounrls arc huge and well shaded, having ball alleys, and abundant room for all games and lithletit: exercises. The .b uildings can accommorlate t,wo hundred students. The halls and rooms are sp:icious, airy and comfortable. The diet of the studeuts is al way~ wholesome and ahundant. In sickness they are nursed and watched over with parental solicitude; and all the care that parents can desire is given to the wardrohe, dormitories and . all those departments on which healt.h, comfort and economy depmd. There are two Hessions, one b£ginning on the first Tuesday of September, the other on the first of February. At the close of each session all the classes are examined. On botb occasions, bulletins are sent to parents or guardians informing them vf the standing, progress, application, health, etc., ~f their children or wards. At the close of the academic year, candidates £or degrees are publicly examined. At the Commencement, degrees are conferred and premiums distributed. Student..: mny enter at any time, and will be charged from da.te of entrance; it is much to their advantage, however, to ent,er at the opening of the September session. Should a student leave the College before the cloRe of a session, no deduction will be .made except in case ot protracted sickness or rlisrnist<al. A student who hn,d been at any other institution must procluce a satisfact-0ry rP.ccommendation from tue Superior thereof. The classes a student is to attend will be determined by an examination. He may afterwards be promoted for merit. While the government of the College is mild and parentaJ~ the " laws of good 01·Jer, propriety and m(lrnlity are strictly enforced. The moral influence of iustructiou, pen,u:ls10n anct encouragement is primarily and mainiy relied on, and ~eltlum found ineffectual.
