JOHN VIANNEY HIGH SCHOOL’S ATHLETIC PROGRAM St. John Vianney High School’s athletic program is an important part of the school’s Catholic, Marianist approach to educating the entire person. Vianney is dedicated to forming young men for spiritual, academic and personal excellence in the Catholic, Marianist tradition. Interscholastic sports are provided in the total school program for their many educational values. Vianney believes interscholastic athletics supplement the secondary curricular program and become a vital part of a student’s total educational experience. These experiences contribute to the development of learning skills and emotional patterns that enable the student to make maximum use of his education.

Vianney’s athletic philosophy is to produce well rounded scholar-athletes whose priorities are based on living a good Christian life. High school athletics should be a great educational experience providing lasting values to the student.

WHO’S DON HEEB?
Don Heeb was the longtime Athletic Director, Physical Education teacher and department chair for more than 40 years. He also served as Vianney’s varsity football coach from 196696. Under Coach Heeb, the Griffins went undefeated in 1970 and 1973. In his 31-year coaching career, he posted a record of 210-107-1, which includes 26 straight winning seasons

The field at Vianney was dedicated to Coach Heeb for his years of service to Vianney and to several generations of Griffins who are proud to call themselves Vianney alumni. Coach Heeb was inducted into the Vianney Hall of Fame in 2004. Coach Heeb and his wife, Billie, reside in South St. Louis County. His son, Dr. Chris Heeb, is a 1984 Vianney graduate. His grandson, Dillon Heeb, Class of 2015, is a member of the varsity football team. The Griffin “V” logo greets visitors.

ABOUT OUR NEW TURF:
As fans look out on to the beautiful artificial turf surface, it is interesting to note that Vianney’s first field was built in 1966 through the leadership of a parent, William Kopp (pictured), and a staff member, Jim Ebbesmeyer. In 1966, a road construction engineer and Vianney parent William Kopp oversaw the building of what is now Interstate 44 through Kirkwood. Ebbesmeyer and Kopp were credited as being the driving forces behind the construction of what was Vianney’s new field. Vianney maintained a grass playing surface from 1966 until May 2014.
Shaw Sports Turf’s Legion system is a combination of high-performance monofilament fibers and a durable slit film fiber. The slit film fiber handles the workload, while the monofilament provides a more resilient surface that enhances performance characteristics. Work on Vianney’s project began in May 2014 and was completed in August 2014.
CAMPUS IMPROVEMENTS:
QUICK FACTS:
Vianney spent nearly $1 million to upgrade the stadium. This investment comes on the heels of nearly $7 million in investments made to Vianney’s academic programs. These improvements came through private donations and include:
• A new Educational Wing • New Leadership & Technology centers • Classroom improvements including windows, lighting, HVAC and flooring • School-wide technology upgrades, including hardware, software, infrastructure and training • Investments in the Scholarship Fund • Professional Development
• The Shaw Sports Turf Legion system is used on the game and practice fields at Vanderbilt University. • The 113,264 square-foot field was manufactured during a period of two weeks at Shaw’s facilities in Calhoun and Dalton, Georgia. • There are more than 36,000 pounds of fiber in the field. • Installation required 8,856 feet of seaming tape and 570 gallons of adhesive compound. • The infill is made up of 305,600 lbs. of rubber and 205,400 lbs. of sand.
