Project Year: 2020 Type: Type: Academic Thesis, Individual Site: Marmorilik, Greenland Digital Modeling Programs: Rhino, QGIS Supervisor: Birthe Urup Nygaard The interest in mining landscape roots far back from my childhood in China when I always felt fear passing by a deep quarry hole on the way to visit families in the countryside. Today, as an architect, I see more aspects of that hole, the economical or technological importance, communal identity, and scenographic potentials. It is of the very meaning for me, to take care of such places, the scars that human’s industries have left on the earth due to their enormous desire, the chapter of Anthropocene being written in the book of time.

This project rethinks both the mining and tourism industries, seeking a more sustainable way of mining in Greenland. Using Marmorilik, a historical marble mine at the edge of the melting ice cap as an example, I envision a new integrated way of exploiting resources including marble, hydro energy, and landscape. A way that contributes to a local community sustained by artisan marble industry and art residency together with tourism, and thus reconnects our urbanized built environment with the material origins as a means to call for protection of the changing fragile ecosystem. The new mine serves as part of the landscape after limited exploitation, to showcase the balance between Anthropocene activities and the epic landscape.

The first strategy is further discussed, as it is the initial step to minimize the impact of human activity. The site is called Marmorilik, an old mine town of marble and zinc.

Place of Marble The name Marmorilik means “the place of marble” in Greenlandic. The town sits on the Marmorilik Formation, between the sea and ice cap. Covered with marble tailings, it provides an impressive panorama view.

Texture & Material Study To revive the local material, and to tell the story of the changing climate as a means to protect the fragile ecosystem.

This project seeks to maximize the use of materials on site, and simple constructions, to reduce the impact on the vegetation and landscape.

New Marble Landscape 2030 -

Due to global warming, the ice melt in summer outweighs the re-freeze in winter, which can be seen in the retreat of the glacier and ice line.

Therefore, instead of reopening the zinc mine, this project proposes to re-evaluate the site and situation, and re-envision a more sustainable Marmorilik Mining Landscape.

The pathway combines of the existing tunnel, railroad, and hiking path. It ends near the edge of the ice cap, with two marble bridges lying across the melt water, indicating the view and the way to return, where one can review the landscape in a different perspective.

New Mine (Finished) The visual shows the phase when the finished mine becomes a visitable landscape element with a section view of the marble mountain body and the veins lead to the ice cap in front.

One walks on the scored pathway, which is the traces of artisan marble mining, creating a horizontal texture serving non-slip and drainage function.

At the end of the mine, sits the art residency by the water, hidden from the plato thanks to level diffrence.

The residency is carved out from the marble mountain.

The marble carved out becomes the materials for the artist to work with. They also get supplies form the new mine.

A stairs carved out from the mountain leads you down to the lake bank, where you will find a sculpture.

As one look back, there are more sculpture exhibited, and probably an artist is working in the courtyard of residency.

Marble Bridges The path leads you till the edge of the ice cap, a place covered with grey glacier flour.

On the water sits two white bridges.

The first bridge points to an inaccessible monument, marking the continuation of the marble formation.

The second bridge points to the glacier.

Standing right at the edge, in front of this giant rough ice, one understand the forces of nature.

After moments of silence, one may return.

P OS T-FA R M-L A N D -SCAPE Re-Thinking The Danish Countryside Project Year: 2019 Type: Type: Academic Work, Individual Site: East Jutland, Denmark Digital Modeling Programs: Rhino, QGIS Supervisor: Rune Christian Bach, Torben Schønherr, Birthe Urup Nygaard The Danish countryside landscape brought a new image to me from my experience. Miles of farmland stretching till the horizon, farms surrounded by a group of trees popping up in distance.

Behind this scenery, lies the fact that 60% of Danish land is cultivated, ranking the 5th country with the highest percentage of cultivated land. Even with so many resources devoted to food production, the majority of the food supply in supermarkets is often found to be produced industrially. The countryside, eroded by capitalism, has been left with little interest for neither human nor animal habitation.

Based on this fact, this project reconsiders the current way of land exploitation with dense farming and envisions a future scenario for the countryside with a new food production landscape.

Imagining temporary profitable crop fields that can fill the gap in the early stage of the tree growth.

Pigs can be allowed in the early stage to help loosen the soil.

Exploreing how to create certain atmosphere with edible or profitable vegetation, in this case, blueberry and woody trees.

Envisioning the lowlands in the farmland re-naturalized into small ‘island’ habitats for vegetation and animals as start.

I came out of the community house to the courtyard, across the bridge I saw a big lawn with beautiful meadow, there I found an art installation transformed from the old barn, and I entered the new agro-forestry.

Walking through a swampy woods, the boardwalk led me between the trees.

The reflection of the sunset on the water coloered the air in the woods golden.

At the end of the boardwalk I came to a shallow water, nice view. This water used to be field, but the crops would not grow well because of bad drainage.

Now the sunset is over, it is all blue.

Finally here is the sea! This line of trees have been here since when here was still farmland. Now they have grown so tall. It is a monument from the farming history. Now it also connects the village and the coastline. Thirty years ago, the sea was far out there, now with the sea level rise it has flooded in.

SAILING INTO GRENÅ The Green Harbour Front Project Year: 2019 Type: Academic Work, Individual Site: Grenå, Djursland, Denmark Digital Modeling Programs: Rhino, QGIS Supervisor: Birthe Urup Nygaard, Torben Schønherr, Rune Christian Bach Kolindsund, an area of 14,000 hectares ,is located in Djursland, Denmark. It was born as sea, once drained to be farmland, is now going to be water again as the sea level is estimated to rise at least 2.5 meters by 2050 due to climate change. These great geographical changes over time is perfectly described by the Chinese phrase ‘cang hai sang tian’.

Facing this challenge, this project aims to embrace the changes and revive the original marine identity of Kolindsund. This geographic change can be viewed as an opportunity to open up the land, bring new water connection. By introducing the Danish sailing tradition back to this area, better accessibility will be provided to the surrounding towns including Grenaa, Kolind and other small settlements. Grenaa harbour, the entrance of Grenaa canal which connects Kolindsund with the sea, is chosen as the project site for further design developemt.

VISION OF KOLINDSUND: FLOODED FARMS & TREES AS LANDSCAPE To remain the traces of change, certain afforestation is to be planned periodically as the prediction of sea rise level. Part of the flooded farms will be kept in place and transformed into monument, art installation or boat camping site, market on water etc. This monumental landscape seeks to alarm us of the changing climate and urge actions to protect our motherland, the earth.

Vision

NAVIGATING IN FLOODED KOLINDSUND 1:50000

This map shows the transportation in Kolindsund in three ways. By car, by train and as the new proposal, by boats. By bringing sailing transportation into the new lake Kolindsund, the area in and around the lake becomes more accessible. Even some flooded buildings, like farms, will gain new access via sailing after losing the road connection, have the potential to become part of the navigation system as well as churches. This will also provide Kolind more possibility and strengthen the connection between Grenå and Kolind as one region around the lake.

VISION OF GRENAA HARBOUR Grenaa harbour is the entrance to Kolindsund lake from the sea, the buffer bay between the sea and the canal, the meeting point of sea and land. Thus, it plays an important role for the whole marine vision of Kolindsund. It consists of three main elements: urban post-industrial harbour, natural wetland coast and artificial marine island, each with its own strong identity.

Hidden opening in the forest

A Forest Island for Living and Working The whole island is a forest with openings for building clusters connected by waterways. Each cluster consists of three to five houses, each shared by 2 or 3 families, surrounding a courtyard with big trees and a pond. Rainwater is collected by ponds and runs into the sea through creeks. These waterways also act as view guide towards the sea, strengthening the sense of living by the water.

A Blue Marina to Access The Sea The marina, of which the main function usually is for people to keep their boats, is also a dream place to live, for passionate sailors or those who enjoy everyday scenery of the sea and boats. It is also a destination for people to have easy access to the sea, to bath, to walk, to eat, to drink, to buy fresh seafood, or just to watch.

The Coast Walk The coast was a dune. While with the sea level rise, the coast is partly flooded, creating a changing wetland landscape.

Forestation strategy is used here for coastline protection meanwhile creating a dynamic coastal landscape. Some openings are created in the forest for gatherings. A simple walk path in concrete defines the dryer wetland forest from the sometimes flooded dune coast, at the same time protects the inner city. The path, starts with a shuttle boat pier that marks the historical entrance of Grenaa canal, circles around the bay and ends at a viewing deck pointing to the further sea.

Project Year: 2021 Type: Professional Work, Team Collaboration with: Torben Schønherr Site: Tjele, Denmark Digital Modeling Programs: Rhino Tasks: Site Registration, Concept Sketch, Drawings Production, 3D Modeling, Visualizations, Project Management, Client Communication, Material Supplier Selection This project, in collaboration with Danish landscape architect Torben Schønherr, is assigned to redesign the garden of an ecological farm with generations of history. It begins by enhancing the existing qualities, then bringing in modern simplicity and a unique spatial experience. In line with the forward-thinking vision, the project works to include spaces facilitating innovative experiments.

An orangerie is included in the assignment.

The renovation is underway.

Tjele Gods is an organic farm located in beautiful surroundings including large fields, forests and lakes, the entire estate comprises approx. 4000 ha.

Its history can be dated back to the end of the 14th century, when the land was gathered into an estate.

Today, the focal point of the place is sustainability and ecology.

The edible garden is spatially defined by hedge walls, extending the quality of the existing hedge. In contrast to the heaviness of the hedges, the orangerie appears lightweight, using large glass bricks as facade material. By using glass bricks with three different finishes, thus different opacity, the orangerie appears to be floating.
