THE VOICE OF THE NEW ZEALAND AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

Recapture revenue with tyre rotation and wheel balancing VEHICLE MAINTENANCE AS WE KNOW IT IS CHANGING — SERVICE INTERVALS ARE GETTING LONGER AND CARS NOW HAVE FEWER MOVING PARTS, LEAVING YOU WITH LESS WORK — WHAT HASN’T CHANGED IS THE WHEEL; ADD VALUE TO YOUR BUSINESS WITH TYRE ROTATION AND WHEEL BALANCING

T

he team at George Stocks noticed something is out of balance in the industry lately. There are now more vehicles on our roads than ever before and yet workshops and dealerships are seeing a decline in revenue. So, what’s changed? The type of vehicles Kiwis are driving. There’s been a surge in electric vehicle (EV) ownership over the past few years — vehicles which don’t require the same level of servicing as their internal combustion engine equipped counterparts. However, what they still have are wheels and tyres. If your business isn’t currently offering customers

a tyre rotation and wheel balancing service, now is the time to start doing so as you could be missing out on more than $600 per day of additional revenue.

THE IMPORTANCE OF TYRE ROTATIONS When referring to ‘tyre rotation’, it isn’t them spinning around on a car as it drives down the road, but rather physically changing the position of the tyre. For example, this is generally done front to back or in a crisscross pattern (diagonal pattern). This is a vital part of maximising tyre life as it prevents uneven wear, reduces vibration,

and can provide a more comfortable ride. As a general rule, tyres should be rotated every six months or 10,000km, whichever comes first. .

THE IMPORTANCE OF WHEEL BALANCING Wheel balancing provides similar benefits to a tyre rotation in that it intends to eliminate vibration, especially those that occur at high speeds, thus preventing uneven tyre wear patterns, improving occupant comfort, improving handling and safety, as well as protecting suspension and steering components. Wheels should always be balanced when new tyres are fitted, but also when tyres are rotated.
