Self-service ‘revolution’ coming to the automotive industry

A

GROUNDBREAKING NEW PARTNERSHIP

BETWEEN TJEKVIK

AND AUXO SOFTWARE IS SET TO REVOLUTIONISE THE AUTOMOTIVE PRE-SERVICE EXPERIENCE FOR MILLIONS OF DRIVERS IN NEW ZEALAND

The collaborative effort will introduce self-service kiosks in dealerships across New Zealand while continuing support for over 50 Australian dealers already benefiting from the technology.

Auxo Software’s CEO, Terry Allen, highlights the transformative potential of these kiosks. The new system will enable customers to provide pre-service instructions, select added-value items, sign their authorisation, and securely drop off their keys using dedicated secure lockers. Allen says, “It’s no stretch to say this will transform the experience for customers.

The Auxo software and Tjekvik digital

solutions combined will help even more dealers provide the best experience for their customers and staff.”

THE MECHANICS OF SELF-SERVICE KIOSKS

These self-service kiosks offer numerous practical benefits. Shorter wait times, simpler instructions, and a smoother overall process are some of the tangible advantages. Users will find the system particularly beneficial during peak periods in the early morning and late afternoon when queues can become overwhelming. According to Christian Mark, CEO and Co-Founder of Tjekvik, “Our

solutions enable service, maintenance, and repair customers to avoid these queues by letting them check in their vehicles how, when, and where they want, whether it’s at home online or at the dealership via easy-touse touchscreen kiosks.”

Autosports Group (ASG) will be at the forefront of this revolution.

They are set to introduce Tjekvik’s digital check-in and check-out technology at their BMW sites in Auckland this month. This move is anticipated to significantly enhance customer satisfaction by offering a more efficient and convenient service.

ENHANCING CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE AND DEALER EFFICIENCY

The integration of Tjekvik’s software provides dual benefits for customers and dealerships. For customers, the improved process means less waiting and more time getting on with their day. For dealerships, it allows service advisors to concentrate on customers who require more personalised attention.

Moreover, these digital self-service solutions offer additional revenue opportunities. By presenting value-added products and services — such as service plans, extended warranty packages, wiper blades, and key fob batteries — during the check-in and check-out process, dealerships can efficiently upsell to customers already in a purchasing mindset.

HOW SELF-SERVICE TECHNOLOGY IS CHANGING THE GAME

adding an extra layer of safety. This feature offers essential reassurance for customers apprehensive about the security of their keys and vehicle data.

According to Terry Allen, the system’s reliability is equally critical: “These kiosks are built to withstand extensive use and are supported by comprehensive software that ensures minimal downtime. This means that dealerships can rely on them to be operational during peak times, which is crucial for maintaining customer satisfaction.”

THE ROLE OF AUXO SOFTWARE

Auxo Software’s role extends beyond simply providing the kiosks. They are integral in supporting the implementation and ongoing success of the self-service technology. By offering robust software solutions and continuous customer support, Auxo ensures that dealerships can fully leverage the capabilities of the Tjekvik kiosks.

“We are committed to helping our dealers succeed,” says Allen. “The collaboration with Tjekvik is just one example of how Auxo is working to bring innovative solutions to the automotive industry.”

According to a report by McKinsey, the future of automotive retail will heavily rely on digital solutions that enhance customer experience and streamline operations.

CASE STUDY: THE AUSTRALIAN EXPERIENCE

Australia serves as a valuable case study for New Zealand as it embarks on this technological transition. More than 50 dealerships across Australia have integrated Tjekvik’s solutions and have reported noticeable improvements in customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. The feedback from these deployments has been overwhelmingly positive, with dealers noting a significant reduction in queue times and increased customer engagement with value-added services.

According to the Australian Automotive Dealer Association, dealerships embracing digital transformation are better positioned to retain customers and maintain a competitive edge. With New Zealand now following suit, the local automotive industry stands to witness similar operational and customer service enhancements.

SECURITY AND RELIABILITY: TOP PRIORITIES

One of the major concerns in any digital transformation initiative is security. The selfservice kiosks by Tjekvik have been designed with robust security features to ensure that customer data is protected. The key dropoff system utilises dedicated secure lockers,

OPPORTUNITIES FOR FURTHER INNOVATION

The introduction of self-service kiosks is just the beginning. The automotive service industry is on the cusp of further digital transformation. Future innovations may include mobile app integrations, remote diagnostics, and AI-driven customer service agents, which will further streamline the vehicle service process.

According to a study by Capgemini, dealerships that invest in digital solutions see immediate benefits and are better positioned for future technological advancements. The study highlighted that customers increasingly prefer digital interactions for convenience and speed, which are critical factors in overall customer satisfaction.

The partnership between Tjekvik and Auxo Software marks a significant milestone in the evolution of the automotive service industry in New Zealand. With the introduction of self-service kiosks, customers can expect a more seamless and efficient experience, while dealerships can optimise their operations and explore new revenue streams. As New Zealand dealerships begin to roll out this innovative technology, the local automotive industry is poised for a transformation that promises to benefit consumers and service providers alike.

The power of a global brand

JOIN YOUR BUSINESS TO THE ACDELCO BATTERY STOCKIST PROGRAM AND UNLOCK THE GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES ON OFFER

ACDelco enjoys a reputation like no other. The brand has cemented its position as a pioneer and a leader in battery manufacturing for over 100 years. Its endorsement by global powerhouse General Motors reinforces its product quality and performance capabilities. Battery resellers, parts distributors, and auto electrical workshops in New Zealand can join the ACDelco Battery Stockist program to grow their own businesses by taking advantage of the reach of a globally recognised brand.

R&J Batteries is the exclusive distributor of ACDelco batteries in Australasia and runs the popular ACDelco Battery Stockist program in the region. R&J Batteries understands the diverse needs of businesses in terms of size and location and thus uses a tailored approach. The ACDelco Battery Stockist program offers varying levels of support, catering to each business’ unique requirements.

The allocation of resources and support for stockists will be determined based on their chosen sign-up level. A key component of the program is the inclusion of ACDelco Battery Stockist identification, which holds significant importance. Stockists will be granted a subsidy allowance for building and vehicle signage to solidify their position as authorised resellers of ACDelco batteries. In addition, stockists will receive a substantial subsidy allowance for local area marketing (LAM) to support their marketing endeavours. They will also benefit from branded merchandise, a battery catalogue, and point-of-sale materials. Comprehensive training on ACDelco products, including their features and benefits, will be provided to

enhance their selling capabilities.

Marketing and advertising play a crucial role in the program. Various marketing activities are executed throughout the year to raise brand awareness for the products and increase sales for ACDelco battery stockists. R&J Batteries’ national reach allows the company to advertise ACDelco batteries at a broader level through digital campaigns and trade magazines.

ACDelco’s extensive product line encompasses batteries tailored to various applications. These include automotive, commercial, and marine sectors for personal, commercial, and recreational battery requirements. Every ACDelco battery undergoes meticulous laboratory testing and rigorous quality control assessments before its introduction to the market, ensuring the utmost standards of excellence. All batteries are accompanied by a robust warranty, further attesting to their exceptional quality and performance capabilities.

The ACDelco range of automotive batteries includes Premium (SMF), Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB), and Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM). The Premium automotive range features sizes to suit all vehicle makes and models. It features full frame grid technology, which optimises performance and electrical flow — these batteries are built to meet or exceed original equipment specifications from manufacturers worldwide. ACDelco EFB and AGM batteries are specifically designed for modern vehicles with advanced systems such as stop-start technology, which puts extra demands on batteries compared to their conventional counterparts. These batteries are

built to perform in extreme conditions where performance matters. ACDelco EFB batteries are constructed with full-frame grids, which gives them the durability and power needed by stop start vehicles. The ACDelco AGM range represents the very best in advanced battery technology. They are designed with highcompression absorbent glass mat separators, significantly increasing the cycle life and improving charge acceptance compared to standard flooded lead acid batteries. These batteries provide high-cranking power even when the state of charge is low.

The ACDelco range of commercial batteries provides high-cranking power and the reserve capacity needed for applications with a continual demand. Suitable for a wide range of commercial applications, the combination of commercial grade plates made from lead calcium alloy and liquid gas separator lids deliver a maintenance-free experience for commercial fleets and business operators across New Zealand. ACDelco Commercial batteries are built with the understanding that commercial vehicles are regularly subjected to gruelling environmental conditions and varied terrains. The commercial range batteries use low-resistance PE separators and lockbonded plate groups for the highest durability and service life. Marine Starting (M Series) and High Cycle Marine (HCM) batteries by ACDelco are designed for marine and recreational vehicles with demanding needs. The range’s characteristic expanded lead calcium grids make ACDelco M and HCM series batteries more durable and powerful than batteries with conventional cast-type grids. The M series cranking batteries provide high cold cranking amps and improved vibration resistance compared to traditional automotive batteries. The HCM series features thicker plate grids and more active plate material than standard automotive batteries for increased performance. The HCM series is designed to be a dual-purpose battery that can crank and improve cycling ability when needed. Strong engine starting power and cycling ability make these batteries suitable for a wide range of marine, RV & SUV applications. The M and HCM series also features dual fit terminals for easy fitment of additional accessories.

Mount Shop appointed official KYB distributor for New Zealand

MOUNT SHOP’S ANNOUNCEMENT CLARIFIES THE EXISTING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TWO COMPANIES AND ENSURES A RELIABLE SUPPLY OF KYB PARTS FOR KIWI

WORKSHOPS

Mount Shop is proud to announce its appointment as the official distributor for KYB shocks/struts in New Zealand. Before the official announcement, some confusion existed regarding the distribution of KYB products in New Zealand. Mount Shop’s acquisition of the Automotive division of George Stock & Co. already established them as the de facto distributor, but this official appointment removes any doubt.

KYB SHOCK ABSORBER PRODUCT OVERVIEWS

Excel-G: The most popular KYB series in the world, Excel-G shock absorbers are the best product to restore original handling and control. Excel-G shock absorbers have been designed to compensate for wear in other suspension parts while providing superior handling and comfort compared to other original equipment units. Features include:

• Multi-lip oil seal to reduce the possibility of oil leakage

• Pressurised nitrogen (N2) gas to reduce foaming and aeration, and deliver better performance

• Hard-chromed piston rod to reduce friction

• Rebound cushion prolongs life Teflon-coated bushing reduces wear.

Tena Force: Designed for 4WD and SUV applications, all Tena Force shock absorbers are valved to balance industry-leading heavy-duty coil and leaf springs to ensure superior vehicle stability and comfort, while maintaining excellent on-road performance. Tena Force valve calibration is 20 to 35 per cent higher/firmer for both compression and rebound movements from OE valving and features:

• Extended and compressed lengths match OE

• Twin-tube design consisting of hardened chromed 16mm diameter piston rod, results in superior strength under extreme conditions

• Four-step multi-lip seals help eliminate contamination, thereby maintaining oil and gas integrity

All-weather fluids maintain constant viscosity regardless of temperatures, providing consistent control.

Skorched4: Built for 4WD applications, reliability was the main task put before KYB designers when creating the Skorched4 shock absorber range. A feature of all Skorched4’s shock absorbers is its reinforced metal housings, which, combined with a two-pipe design, provide reliable protection against off-road damage. In addition, all Skorched4’s shock absorbers are designed with strong, hardened 16mm rods, and special reinforced materials applied to guide bushings, piston, and piston seal. KYB engineers also maximised the fluid volume inside the Skorched4’s shock absorber by increasing the diameter of the cylinder, piston, and rod. This allows for the efficient dissipation of heat during intense off-road operation, reducing chances of aeration and suspension fade. Features include:

• Extended and compressed lengths 30mm to 50mm longer than OE

the speculation to bed once and for all,” says Hemi Toia, managing director of Mount Shop. “Now that the official appointment has been announced, customers will have confidence in knowing that KYB shocks/struts will be available with no doubts about stock supply or if they are able to purchase from Mount Shop or Mount Shop-appointed resellers. Having the KYB agency for New Zealand means Mount Shop deals directly with the KYB factory so order delivery, range expansion or any potential problems are dealt with much faster.”

INCREASED AVAILABILITY NATIONWIDE

As part of its commitment to making KYB products more accessible, Mount Shop has significantly increased stock levels across its branches. Penrose, Palmerston North, and Christchurch stores now hold over 2,500 different KYB shock/strut part numbers, while Whangarei, Henderson, and Hamilton stores stock over 900. This range will continue to expand to meet local market demand.

THE IMPORTANCE OF QUALITY SHOCKS ON NEW ZEALAND ROADS

With New Zealand’s roads in such a terrible state and judder bars popping up everywhere, a good-quality shock is needed more than ever to cope with these extra demands on vehicles. KYB, a premium brand with a rich history dating back to 1919, offers a comprehensive range of OE-quality replacement shocks to meet diverse needs, including the Excel-G, through to 4WD/SUV options for heavy-duty standard height vehicles (Tena Force) and lifted vehicles (Skorched4).

MOUNT SHOP AND KYB: A PARTNERSHIP FOR RELIABLE PERFORMANCE

KYB is a world leader in shock absorber production, supplying around 50 million original equipment shocks annually to major vehicle manufacturers. Today, one in two cars in Japan and one in five passenger and light commercial vehicles globally leave the factory equipped with KYB shocks.

With Mount Shop’s established distribution network and KYB’s reputation for quality, this partnership ensures that New Zealand workshops have access to a reliable supply of high-performance shock absorbers. By choosing KYB, workshops can offer customers a cost-effective solution for restoring vehicle handling and safety, with the confidence of ‘fit once and forget’.

Among thousands of callouts, AMI launches extension to Roadside Rescue service

AMIDST ANOTHER YEAR OF HIGH CALLOUT VOLUMES, AMI ROADSIDE RESCUE HAS MADE ITS ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE TO ALL NEW ZEALANDERS, WHETHER INSURED WITH AMI OR NOT

AMI Roadside Rescue launched a new service in July that will be available for all New Zealanders anywhere in the country, whether they’re insured with AMI or not.

“We are thrilled to introduce new simplified

AMI Roadside Rescue subscriptions, designed with all New Zealand drivers in mind,” said AMI executive general manager supply chain and hub services, Dean MacGregor.

“Customers can call us for assistance with

any vehicle, and any driver can call for the nominated vehicle. For $79 per year, drivers will get unlimited nationwide callouts, 24/7, with on-towed trailers, boats, or caravans also covered. A discounted annual rate of $49 will also be available for new and existing AMI customers,” added Mr MacGregor.

The award-winning AMI Roadside Rescue service, previously exclusive to AMI, State, and NZI customers, assisted more than 42,000 drivers over the past 12 months.

The country’s active driving culture was reflected in new research commissioned by AMI, with 90% of respondents over 18 stating they currently drive a vehicle. MacGregor said, “It has never been such an important time to extend our service to all New Zealanders. With most of the population out and about on the road, there’s always the chance something can go wrong — even during a short trip down the road.”

Battery issues result in around 47% of all AMI Roadside Rescue callouts, followed by mechanical issues (21%), damaged tyres (12%), and keys being locked in the car or malfunctioning (6%). AMI’s Roadside Rescue data also shows that callouts commonly occur on Mondays, particularly during the early afternoon.

OF WOMEN’S WORLDWIDE CAR OF THE YEAR (WWCOTY), TRAVELLED TO KOREA IN JULY ALONGSIDE FELLOW JUDGES TO PRESENT THE 2024 BEST CAR IN THE WORLD AWARD TO THE KIA EV9

The presentation took place at the Busan International Mobility Show, where Teck-Koun Kim, Head of Kia Design Next Group, received the trophy on behalf of Kia.

Myhre, a New Zealand motoring journalist, created WWCOTY in 2009. The award, judged exclusively by women motoring journalists, aims to recognise the year’s best cars while providing a platform for women’s voices in the automotive industry. The voting process considers various factors, including safety, quality, price, design, ease of driving, benefits, and environmental footprint.

During the trophy presentation, Kim acknowledged the importance of winning the WWCOTY award, noting that it will enhance the

recognition of the EV9 and provide customers with additional assurance, given the expertise of the jury members, saying, “It gives another twist to customers when juries like yours recognise the EV9 because you are the experts and you know which EV or vehicle works for the consumer experience.”

The WWCOTY delegation participated in interviews for Kia’s official social media channels and a television interview during which Myhre discussed the history of the awards, the growing number of jury members, and the rigorous voting process that led to the EV9 being named the clear winner for 2024. The delegation also highlighted specific noteworthy design aspects of the EV9, such as

A battery built to perform in all seasons

WHY ARE NEARLY HALF OF AMI ROADSIDE RESCUE’S CALLOUTS IN NEW ZEALAND BATTERY-RELATED, ESPECIALLY DURING COLDER WEATHER?

During these cold snaps, batteries can struggle to deliver enough power, and an aged battery will often fail as the temperatures in the winter months move towards or below 0°C. Koba batteries are the right solution for customers seeking a reliable battery that can perform all year round.

A battery uses a chemical reaction to store and deliver energy. As the temperature plummets, the speed of the chemical reaction becomes slower, reducing the amount of power a battery can deliver. A battery which is near the end of its life will have more difficulty delivering power or may even cease functioning altogether during the winter months. An aged or underperforming battery may struggle to meet the demands of a starter motor due to a reduction in cranking power. Additionally, cold weather thickens the vehicle’s motor oil, resulting in the starter motor drawing more current when cranking because it is pumping the thicker oil around the engine. These are the reasons why you should get your battery’s health and state of charge tested regularly.

Koba has been a trusted name in the aftermarket parts industry for 15 years. The Koba product range covers a vast range of applications using only 40 part numbers, making it easier for businesses to service customers using a single brand with a wide variety of power requirements. Koba batteries are designed to provide reliable performance and an extended service life in a wide range of applications, including automotive, commercial, leisure, marine, and industrial. They are manufactured in South Korea at one of the region’s most experienced battery manufacturing facilities. South Korea is well regarded for its advanced manufacturing capabilities due to its highly skilled workforce, world-class infrastructure, advanced technology, and industry-leading research and development.

The automotive range includes Calcium, Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) and Enhanced Flooded Batteries (EFB). Koba AGM and EFB batteries are ideal for vehicles with Stop Start systems. These batteries are available in a range

Pilot program helps collision repairers

NEW CLIMATE-RELATED LEGISLATION MEANS INSURERS ARE AMONG THE FIRST BUSINESSES IN NEW ZEALAND REQUIRED TO REPORT SUPPLY CHAIN EMISSIONS, WHICH WILL HAVE FLOW-ON IMPACTS ON COLLISION REPAIRERS

Businesses within the claims supply chain, including collision repairers, will face escalating pressure to measure and report their operational emissions to insurers. To address this, the Collision Repair Association is running a pilot initiative through to September for qualifying businesses, provided by a collaborative effort between leading insurers and New Zealand sustainability fintech, Cogo. The pilot aims to provide eligible collision repairers free access to the Cogo Carbon Manager app, enabling them to measure, understand, and report their business’ carbon footprint. This approach requires less manual data than others, making it faster, easier and cheaper to implement.

The driving force behind this pilot is the new mandatory climate-related legislation in New Zealand, which requires insurers to disclose their supply chain emissions. Participating insurers in this groundbreaking pilot include industry giants such as IAG, Vero, AA Insurance, Tower, and FMG, working through the Insurance

Council of New Zealand (ICNZ).

For collision repairers, the benefits of participating in this pilot are numerous. First and foremost, it offers a streamlined solution for measuring and reporting emissions data to multiple insurers through a single application. This efficiency can significantly reduce administrative burdens and potential double handling of information. Moreover, the Cogo Carbon Manager app provides valuable insights into emissions hotspots within the business, allowing repairers to identify areas for improvement and seek efficiencies.

From the insurers’ perspective, the pilot offers several advantages. It promotes an industry-aligned approach, expected to lead to better data quality, shared capability, and a smoother experience for all stakeholders. Insurers can efficiently meet regulatory requirements using a secure third-party application for emissions calculation, management, and distribution.

Participating in the Cogo Carbon Manager

pilot is designed to be user-friendly. Eligibility for the pilot is currently limited to approved repairers working with one or more of the participating insurers and using Xero accounting software (MYOB is also roadmapped for inclusion). The Cogo platform securely syncs accounting transaction data to calculate the business’ emissions footprint automatically. Repairers can then improve the accuracy of their footprint by adding specific usage information, such as fuel, electricity, and gas consumption.

The Collision Repair Association emphasises the importance of this pilot in future-proofing the industry. The association encourages eligible members to take advantage of this opportunity to gain valuable insights into their carbon footprint and contribute to the industry’s sustainability efforts.

Qualifying businesses can sign up for the pilot at collisionrepair.co.nz/cogo-carbonmanager-pilot.

2024 new car sales to date analysed

NEW ZEALAND’S NEW CAR SALES FOR 2024 HAVE BEEN ON A NOTICEABLE DECLINE, WITH JUNE 2024 MARKING THE LOWEST SALES FOR THAT MONTH IN OVER A DECADE

This trend is part of a broader economic slowdown, leading to a significant drop in car registrations and reflecting challenges within the automotive market. In June 2024, New Zealand saw just 9,423 new car registrations, a striking 60% decrease compared to June 2023; however, it’s important to note that June 2023 was the highest month ever recorded due to changes in the Clean Car Discount that took effect in July 2023. Nevertheless, compared to June 2022, the 2024 figure represents a 22% decline. Year-to-date, the total number of new car registrations in 2024 is down by 26% compared to the same period in 2023, with only 22,235 units sold.

MARKET LEADERS AND SEGMENTATION

Toyota continues to dominate the market with a 20.8% share, followed by Ford at 14% and Mitsubishi at 12%. The best-selling light passenger vehicle for June 2024 was the Toyota RAV4, with 556 units sold, followed by the Mitsubishi Outlander (255 units) and the Mitsubishi ASX (252 units). Regarding market segments, utes remain the most popular,

making up 25% of the market, followed by medium SUVs at 22% and compact SUVs at 19%. The topselling vehicle overall was the Ford Ranger, with 889 units sold, reaffirming its position as the favourite among New Zealand consumers.

ELECTRIFICATION TRENDS

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) accounted for only 5.8% of the market share in June 2024, compared to 70% for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. The top-selling BEVs were the Tesla Model 3 (67 units), Hyundai Kona (62 units), and BYD Atto 3 (47 units). Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) also struggled, capturing just 2.4% of the market. Conversely, mild hybrids performed relatively well, holding a 22.4% market share. The leading models in this category were the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (556 units), Highlander (153 units), and Suzuki Swift (135 units).

LIGHT COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

The light commercial vehicle segment saw 2,762 registrations in June 2024, about half the number recorded in June 2023. Year-to-date, registrations

in this segment are 8.5% lower compared to the previous year’s first half. Most light commercial vehicles were sold to businesses, with 79% of the total sales in this category. The Ford Ranger led the light commercial segment, followed by the Toyota Hilux (591 units) and Mitsubishi Triton (436 units).

FACTORS INFLUENCING THE DECLINE AND FUTURE OUTLOOK

The landscape of New Zealand’s automotive market is undergoing significant changes. Economic challenges, changes in regulatory tax incentives, and the Clean Car Discount’s end have significantly contributed to declining sales. The surge in late 2023 sales due to changes in the Clean Car Discount created an unusually high baseline, making the 2024 figures appear even more subdued. Additionally, the introduction of Road User Charges (RUCs) for electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) from April 2024 has further dampened consumer enthusiasm. Despite the current downturn, there are signs that the market could stabilise in the coming months. The push for more hybrid and electric models remains strong, with manufacturers like Toyota offering a wide range of hybrid vehicles that appeal to the eco-conscious consumer.

THE MOTOR INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION (MIA) STRONGLY SUPPORTS THE GOVERNMENT’S DECISION TO ALIGN THE CLEAN CAR IMPORTER STANDARD CO2 EMISSION TARGETS WITH AUSTRALIA’S

This alignment is a positive and necessary step for the industry and everyday Kiwis.

MIA chief executive officer Aimee Wiley explains, “New Zealand’s emission targets cannot outpace those of our supply markets without imposing financial burdens on consumers. Everyone loses if future targets exceed what two-thirds of new vehicles can meet. Consumers will face higher costs due to penalties, and emission targets will remain unmet.”

Resetting the CO2 targets will provide muchneeded relief for the light-vehicle industry in New Zealand. Earlier this year, the MIA worked extensively with officials to review the Clean

Car Importer Standard. MIA’s detailed modelling and analysis revealed that the previous targets were too stringent for most of the new vehicle industry to achieve. Without change, these overly ambitious targets threatened the industry’s future.

The government’s decision to reset these targets shows an understanding of the industry’s challenges and a commitment to finding a better balance. Wiley says, “Achieving future emission targets will require an adequate supply of, and demand for, a wide range of zero and low-emission vehicles. Zero and very low-emission vehicles will become more widely

available across all segments in the next three to five years. The industry is ready to supply these vehicles in volumes that match consumer demand. Therefore, the pace of achieving our emission targets now depends more on Kiwi consumers choosing the cleanest, newest, and safest vehicles they can afford.”

The MIA’s recommendation to reset future emission targets does not mean weakening them or compromising environmental goals. Decarbonising the nation’s light vehicle fleet is a marathon, not a sprint, and our targets should reflect this reality. MIA proposes resetting New Zealand’s ambition and pace of change to follow, rather than lead, in global stringency. Aligning more closely with Australia regarding timing, standards, technology, and emission targets is a sensible approach to better support the industry’s future success and achieve our environmental goals.

Blown, bright and beaten on

SUPERCHARGERS, OLD HOLDENS, AND A HEAVY GAS PEDAL FOOT CAN ONLY MEAN ONE THING, RIGHT? PARTY TIME! AND TREVOR TOLHOPF’S ’73 HQ SEDAN IS HERE TO HAVE A RAGER, COURTESY OF A TOUGH BLOWN SBC AND A HEAVY-DUTY DRIVELINE TO MATCH

WORDS: RICHARD OPIE PHOTOS: CAM LEGGETT

How good is an HQ Holden, really? At one point in time, the old Aussie workhorses filled in pretty much every gap a fourwheeled machine could in Kiwi society.

The HQ played a role as the dependable family wagon, trucking around mum, dad, and scorching their sprogs’ legs on the vinyl seats during a mid-summer getaway.

Our boys in blue used them, lurching from corner to corner, cross-plies squealing away in pursuit of the bad guys. Farmers hauled everything conceivable with an HQ, while young fellas lined the interiors of their panel vans with crushed velvet in a quest to slay, er, well you know the drill.

The venerable HQ even found its way onto the race circuit, amongst a gaggle of 20-something other mad bastards, right feet mashed to the floorboards, wringing every

last little bit of grunt out of a howling 202. She’s truly a Jack of all trades, and we haven’t even touched on the myriad of tough street machines born from the HQ chassis.

HQs are an absolute cornerstone of the Kiwi tough street scene. Whether it’s packing a screaming SBC cut loose on the skid pad, blazing through a set of rear boots, or an oily old 253 slapping its way along the main drag of Gore, ROH Prostars glistening by streetlight as it scrapes the asphalt. It’s almost like wherever there’s a party, and there’s cars involved, an HQ is there.

It almost stands to reason then, that this vibrant red, tough-as-nails HQ sedan streeter hails from the tarmac of the Taranaki region. There’s something in the water over that way, or maybe it’s that oil and gas industry that permeates the mentality of its car-mad

BUILD BREAKDOWN

residents, but a stream of mega-staunch creations have flowed from the region. Born and bred in Taranaki, Trevor Tolhopf’s 1973 Kingswood is built to be stout, and with good reason. “I’ve spent all my life thrashing cars, breaking them, fixing them,” laughs Trevor. “I guess I drive like a bit of an idiot sometimes — just about every car I’ve had, I’ve broken it!”

It’s a story that begins way back as a kid in Waitara, with his old man making a bit of a business of buying, fixing up, and selling old cars. “I grew up around old-school cars,”

explains Trevor. “My dad would always be buying and selling them; sometimes he’d send me up the driveways of houses where an old car was on the lawn, or in the shed, and get me to ask them to sell it!”

He reckons the tactic didn’t always pay off, but when the father-son duo did succeed in snapping up a deal, it was the process that came next that set Trevor in good stead to ultimately piece together the blown HQ sedan that’s the pride of the fleet today.

“He’d take these cars back home, park ’em in

the shed and we’d panel beat ’em, and get ’em fixed up ready to sell,” says Trevor. “He always had a string of Holdens too, so I guess that’s maybe where it comes from for me!”

The Kingswood is by no means Trevor’s first GM-H product. The Lion features often in his line-up of previous rides — in fact a minty HQ Monaro made way for this sedan — and it’s destined to feature in the future, but more on that later! “We’d sold the HQ Monaro to put some money into other things,” explains Trevor. “They were skyrocketing in price so we made

the hard call, but we decided we couldn’t live without a Holden, so started looking for a sedan.”

Trevor’s taken on a bit of his dad’s entrepreneurial streak, buying, fixing, and flipping old cars, and he knew where to find an HQ sedan as a solid starting point. “I was offered this car about five years earlier,” says Trevor. “I thought it wasn’t worth the asking price then, but we got back in touch with the guy and made a deal — but it cost me a bit more than the first offer!”

The Kingswood was all the way down in Invercargill, so Trevor and his wife Linda booked a couple of one-way tickets to the Deep South. The previous owner had already had a crack at building the HQ into something special. It presented as a GTS replica, in lime green with black stripes. A basic 350 Chev lump, backed with a TH350 that fed a “half-pie” diff in the back, but Trevor reckons it “drove like a dream” all 1300-odd kilometres back to the ‘Naki.

“Yeah, but I just couldn’t get my head around the colour,” laughs Trevor, before admitting he

just ain’t a fan of green at all. And this is where it all really starts. We’ve all been there. The whole ‘I’m just gonna’ justification for starting a build. In Trevor’s case, he was ‘just gonna’ sort out that disagreeable shade of green, and build a new donk for the unsuspecting sedan. Famous last words, right?

It helped that the lurid green tone hadn’t been laid on perfectly straight panels before Trevor and Linda set about prepping the car for a new coat of jam, which ended up being a full strip down to a bare shell. When Trevor says “stripped bare”, he means it. The entire body shell was taken back to bare metal — including the underside — epoxied and prepped before being sent to Hayden at Paintworks in New Plymouth. Hayden applied the finishing touches, massaging the panels and ensuring the sheet metal was on point, before spraying a coat of custom red/orange flip across the HQ’s iconic silhouette.

Meanwhile, Trevor set to work on the subframe and running gear. Blasted, coated, and kitted out with new fasteners throughout,

BUILD BREAKDOWN

and beefed up Koni shocks, the subframe was bolted under the freshly painted shell. Trevor set about reassembling the car while engine builder Chris from New Plymouth Engine Rebuilders hooked into building a rowdy, bulletproof motor for the car, something capable of dealing with the punishment doled out by Trevor’s right foot.

The basis is a 407-cube Dart block, packed full of the good stuff. A forged steel Scat crank slots into the main caps, topped by Manley rods and Arias pistons, all necessary for hanging

together in the face of a good old-fashioned ragging. Up top, the stout small block uses AFR 210cc race heads, kitted out with roller rockers actuated by a custom 600 thou lift cam.

A naturally aspirated engine with a loopy idle wouldn’t be enough, though. To top off the gleaming tower of power, a 6/71 TBS blower jams boost down a pair of 950cfm Demon carbies, before gases exit via big ol’ Pacemaker headers into dual 3-inch pipes finished with a classic pair of Flowmaster mufflers.

“We went through hell building that engine,” Trevor says, referring to the drama that plagued Covid-era parts supplies, “but he [Chris] knows what he’s doing and, man, when we fired it up, I honestly couldn’t have been happier!”

With a Hughes-built, manualised TH400 box stolen from his old 1FAT67 Camaro, the powertrain is built to withstand a beating. The rear-end features a fabricated 9-inch housing from the Krysler Shop, using 35-spline axles and a Trutrac LSD to keep those fat rear BFGoodrich 295-wide tyres pumping out the white stuff.

“It’s pretty lethal, really,” Trevor reckons, explaining the car pumped out 530-horsepower to the tyre. It’s got a stance to match, set low over a classic set of Centerline Convo Pros for a timeless street machine look. Fluted GTS guards and a GTS grille add a bit of jazz to the Kingswood trim, and what staunch old Holden would be complete without a polished alloy drop-tank hanging from beneath its chrome rear bumper?

You can add ‘roadmarker’ to the list of uses

that HQs have been pressed into across our shores. Trevor’s not too shy about putting the boot up it and having a good time — in controlled situations of course — and the HQ is built to take it. In his words, “We’ve built it right, we’ve built it to last.”

And long may it last, the whining of the 6/71 and bellowing of the SB echoing round the hills of Taranaki. But it’s not the last we’re going to hear of Trevor and his lead foot. He and Linda have recently acquired an HT Monaro which — and we know where this is going — is destined to be a bit of a project too. Since it’s definitely going to need to withstand a beating, we reckon there’ll be another tough Holden streeter rolling out of the Tolhopf garage before we know it!

The road to Finke

SUPERCARS LEGEND CRAIG LOWNDES AND NAVIGATOR DALE MOSCATT MADE A DEBUT ATTEMPT TO GET TO FINKE WITH THE CHEVROLET OFF-ROAD RACING TEAM’S PRODUCTION SILVERADO ZR2 — HOW DID THEY GO?

The Finke Desert Race throws a unique challenge: a gruelling 460km trek through sand and unforgiving terrain across the Australian outback from Alice Springs to the Finke River. Raced over King’s Birthday weekend, the race remains an iconic event in the Northern Territory. This year, the GMV Motorsport team took on the challenge in a production-based Chevy Silverado. This project was more than just a race for GMV; it served as a passion project, showcasing the capabilities of their Chevrolet Silverado.

Lowndes and co-driver Moscatt faced the prologue with intensity, akin to a top-10 shootout in rally terms. As it’s often said, while races aren’t won in qualifying, they can certainly be lost. Lowndes emphasised, “Starting position can make a big difference, especially on a dusty track.” Things started well as they secured first place in the Production 4WD class, placing them ahead of established competitors. This initial success fuelled their confidence heading into the main race.

The next phase was about taking these learnings and preparing the vehicle for race day.

Success in the prologue meant they outran their main competitors and earned a favourable start. The race itself was an exhilarating mix of precision driving and strategic adaptability. Lowndes and Moscatt embarked on the desert track with a blend of confidence and caution. “It’s about finding your rhythm and understanding what your equipment can handle,” said Lowndes as they set out to encounter varied terrains that traversed sandy stretches and rocky sections.

Deploying racecraft he’s acquired over the years, Lowndes navigated through the rigorous conditions. However, as in any high-stakes motorsport, there is always the chance that not everything always goes to plan. Around the 37km mark, a front-suspension issue forced an early retirement for the Silverado. Nonetheless, this did not overshadow their achievements,

particularly their record-setting prologue time for a production car.

Reflecting on the journey, Lowndes expressed his pride in the project’s fruition, acknowledging the team’s effort over the twoyear development period. Despite the setback, the overall experience was invaluable, providing key learnings for future endeavours. “We excelled beyond our expectations. Setting one of the fastest prologue times was a significant milestone,” he said.

The collaborative spirit within the GMSV team and the broader motorsport community shone brightly, and the initiatives extended beyond the race track. Following the passing of a valued team member, an internal GoFundMe campaign was launched, raising significant funds for brain cancer research. In their contemplation of the event’s conclusion, the narrative was clear: this was more than a race; it was a testament to collaboration, innovation, and perseverance. While they didn’t finish the final stage this year, looking forward, the team is rallying behind the motto of learning and improving. Plans for future editions of the Finke Desert Race are already taking shape within the GMSV team, with a return aiming to achieve even greater heights next year.
