Hydrogen: Could it save the planet?

AS THE NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT PREPARES TO UNVEIL A HYDROGEN ROADMAP THIS YEAR, WE TAKE A LOOK AT THE BASICS OF THE TECHNOLOGY AND WHAT THIS COULD MEAN FOR THE AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR

Greenhouse gas emissions from national transport account for the largest share of total energy sector emissions in New Zealand, according to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are seen as the chief decarbonising technology in cars, and many see hydrogen as a potential solution for aviation, shipping, and heavy commercial vehicles. New Zealand has an ambitious target of reaching net zero emissions of all long-lived greenhouse gases — carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) — mainly from

burning fossil fuels, agriculture, and animal farming — by 2050.

These are gases that can stay in the atmosphere for decades or even thousands of years, potentially impacting the climate and ozone layer for several generations.

The Government has seen this transition as an opportunity to find and institute a highly renewable, sustainable, and efficient energy and industry sector that supports a low-emissions economy and highly skilled jobs. To reach this target, many different approaches are being instituted. One

TREATED TREATED

is the decarbonisation of cars, including light and heavy vehicles, and this includes the use of hydrogen.

HOW IS HYDROGEN PRODUCED?

Hydrogen is a versatile and clean fuel that can be produced from various resources, including natural gas, biomass, and renewables (solar and wind). It is used in transportation, electricity generation, and other applications. Its main drawcard is that it produces only water when consumed in a fuel cell.

Methods for hydrogen production include thermal processes like steam reforming, electrolysis, solar-driven processes such as photobiological and photoelectrochemical methods, and biological processes using microbes like bacteria and microalgae.

However, according to MBIE, “most of the hydrogen produced today is from emissions-intensive sources. The New Zealand government’s interest is mainly in green hydrogen production using electrolysis, but future low and zero emissions production sources such as naturally occurring hydrogen and biogenic hydrogen may also play a part.”

The government has spent the past few years consulting on a Hydrogen Roadmap, which they expect to unveil by the end of this year. So far, as a result of significant industry and public consultation, they have unveiled an interim roadmap.

According to that document, the NZ Government is interested in harnessing the potential of green hydrogen, derived from renewable sources, to cut emissions in the country and foster a green hydrogen economy.

While the primary focus is on hydrogen’s emission-reducing capabilities, the Government recognises broader benefits for New Zealand, including economic growth and energy security, through domestic hydrogen production.

So, why aren’t there more on the road? It is all about infrastructure. Hydrogen refuelling stations are minimal, and there are only a handful in New Zealand. Hiringa (a local hydrogen producer) is planning approximately 20 more by 2028.

The production, storage, and transportation of hydrogen are said to still be quite an energyhungry enterprise that requires significant safety measures. This is likely to impact cost.

Nonetheless, due to the long ranges associated with hydrogen, many have hailed the technology as a great alternative energy source for the heavy transport sector (buses, trucks, ships, and even trains).

Expanding renewable electricity generation is pivotal to support green hydrogen production, and its development hinges on scaling up domestic renewable energy capacity.

The interim roadmap has pinpointed various potential uses for green hydrogen, such as in challenging industrial processes, transportation, and electricity grid integration. However, industry must surmount commercial and technological hurdles to enable large-scale and economically viable green hydrogen production in the country.

AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR

As the decarbonisation of the car industry is one of the critical priorities, hydrogen is a significant tool.

Fuel cell electric vehicles harness the power of hydrogen — the most abundant element in the universe — through an electrochemical process to generate electricity, propelling the vehicle with efficiency.

There are many advantages to fuel cell cars, but one of the primary ones is their ability to provide a long driving range and quick refuelling times. They can be refuelled in less than five minutes and offer impressive ranges spanning from 500 to 1300 kilometres per full tank (depending on the type of car). Operating on compressed hydrogen gas, fuel cell vehicles channel this resource into an onboard stack, where it undergoes a chemical transformation into electrical energy, powering the vehicle’s electric motors. Notably, these cars produce no tailpipe emissions, only expelling pure water as waste.

The construction of a fuel cell mirrors that of a battery: hydrogen enters the anode, encountering a catalyst that initiates the separation of its atoms into electrons and protons. The electrons are then collected by a conductive current collector, which links to the car’s high-voltage circuitry, feeding energy to the onboard battery and motors responsible for propulsion.

WHAT DOES A TECHNICIAN NEED TO LEARN?

(Disclaimer: this is just an informative article; no one should attempt to service these vehicles without proper training and certification)

In essence, much of the technology in a hydrogen-powered vehicle mirrors that of an EV. Components like the high-voltage battery, electric motor, control systems, and inverters, as well as safety protocols, share similarities with EVs, with two notable differences: the fuel storage system and the fuel cell.

Technicians would need to learn proper defuelling methods when extracting compressed hydrogen from the vehicle’s fuel tank.

The hydrogen fuel storage and delivery system resemble those of CNG vehicles.

Hydrogen is stored in fibre-wrapped fuel cylinders within the vehicle, with pressures reaching up to 10,000 psi.

However, the maintenance and repair of the fuel cell will remain the domain of specialised OEM personnel in the foreseeable future. Fuel cells are intricate, lacking user or local technician-replaceable parts, and are highly protected technologies. They also represent a significant portion of the vehicle’s cost, often exceeding half its total price. Consequently, there is expected to be a considerable time before the industry develops local-level capabilities for fuel cell repair.

Considering hydrogen, particularly in light of environmental issues and escalating gasoline and diesel costs, presents an appealing prospect. With the establishment of proper infrastructure, could FCEVs emerge as the next significant technological advancement akin to computerised fuel injection? Only time will tell. Nonetheless, many will be curious to discover what the Government Hydrogen Roadmap will reveal and what business, learning and driving opportunities it might represent.

Cooling batterieshybrid with Ryco

KEEPING HYBRID BATTERIES COOL IS ESSENTIAL AND RELIES ON A CRUCIAL PIECE OF GEAR: VEHICLE BATTERY AIR FILTERS. WE EXPLORE THE REASONS, AND WHY RYCO HYBRID EV VEHICLE BATTERY AIR FILTERS ARE THE BEST OPTION

Why do you need Hybrid EV Vehicle Battery Air Filters? With hybrid car technology constantly evolving, electric vehicles are fast becoming the norm on our roads, offering efficiency, convenience, and a lower environmental impact.

Hybrid batteries must operate within a specific temperature range to ensure they work at their full potential. Heating and cooling create a fine balance between efficiency and other factors, determining the best conditions for top power output. This will also affect the longevity of any hybrid vehicle’s battery. Keep the batteries too warm and componentry starts to erode and fail, keep them too cool and the power supply will be sluggish and potentially nil.

In order to ensure top performance for batteries, hybrid vehicles require a cooling system that can regulate the battery’s temperature.

Hybrid car battery cooling systems can be categorised into passive and active systems.

Passive systems rely on air movement alone, drawing in cabin or ambient air to cool the battery. Active systems use the vehicle’s refrigeration system to further cool the battery, either by cooling the air or a liquid circulating through the pack.

Active systems offer better temperature control but, like any part of a vehicle, require proper maintenance and monitoring to ensure effective cooling, including checking for debris blockages and ensuring the correct coolant is used in liquid-cooled systems.

An essential of hybrid car maintenance is regular replacement of the hybrid battery air filter.

These filters work to ensure that only clean air is supplied to the battery by keeping out dust and contaminants before they reach the battery air cooling system.

Dust and contaminants can restrict or block the inlet for the air-cooling system, leading to the battery running over the specification temperature which, in turn, negatively affects the efficiency, reliability, and longevity of the battery.

According to OEM manuals, hybrid battery air filters should be inspected every 10,000 kilometres and replaced if required, or replaced every 20,000 kilometres.

WHY CHOOSE RYCO HYBRID EV VEHICLE BATTERY AIR FILTERS?

When it comes time to replace a vehicle’s Hybrid Battery Air Filter, Ryco offers a wide range of direct replacement filters to suit the Toyota Hybrid range (including Camry, RAV4, Corolla, and Prius) as well as Lexus.

Ryco’s Hybrid Battery Air Filters are made to protect hybrid vehicle battery systems by filtering and removing dust and contaminants before they enter the battery cooling system. This ensures only clean cool air is passed through the cell blocks. Almost all contaminants in the engine come in through the air intake. Old dirt and high silica content levels create a need for high-quality air filters. It’s not about the visible dirt found on the surface, it’s about the dirt you can’t see, which

little by little can deteriorate and potentially affect the very important cooling system of a hybrid vehicle.

A flame-retardant synthetic fibre media traps particles, reducing dust build-up in the battery air system, preventing the battery pack from overheating and damaging the battery system. A high dust-holding capacity prevents contaminants from infiltrating the cooling system. This promotes the battery’s efficiency, reliability, and longevity. It also ensures that the vehicle’s cooling system keeps the battery’s temperature within tolerance.

Servicing these filters is a relatively simple job. On popular Toyota hybrid models, the hybrid battery air filter is commonly found behind a service hole cover beneath the rear seat trim. This cover can be removed to access the hybrid battery air filter, and from there, the filter can be inspected and replaced.

Ryco Hybrid EV Vehicle Battery Air Filters are available from NAPA Auto Parts. Contact your local rep or call 0800 800 083.

Comfort and safety with Italian style

INTRODUCING THE CORGHI ERCO HC4502 4500KG TWO-POST CAR LIFT

The HC4502 has been conceived with better design and functionality to create a longer-lasting, safer, and more productive two-post car lift.

It offers an industry-leading, 1980mm lifting height, allowing tall technicians to stand comfortably under the vehicle, and provides 3000–3200mm clearance between the posts (width is adjustable by 200mm).

The main columns are made from one piece of full-length steel, with an eightfold bending structure and internally built-in reinforcement to provide maximum rigidity and strength for safety.

The large base plate (650mmx350mm) is made from 20mm-thick steel. Four supporting brackets are welded to the base of the column, and eight true bolts secure it to the floor, making it solidly attached to the ground.

Nylon carriage slider blocks are made from wear-resistant and maintenance-free materials for long life and low service cost.

For added safety, the lift’s carriages are 1800mm long to provide extra stability and

load distribution over a larger area of the column. On each carriage there are two rubber protector pads to prevent damage to open car doors. A parachute valve is installed in each cylinder for added safety in case of hydraulic failure and to control fluid flow and descent speed.

The adjustable-width cross beam allows for narrow or wide installation options, which means it can accommodate a wider variety of workshops.

The four three-stage arms are made from 8mm-thick steel and fitted with long-lasting, durable rubber lifting pads.

At full extension, the arms provide 1750mm of reach to allow the safe lifting of small cars, American classic cars with narrow chassis, or extra-large commercial vehicles.

The standard height of 4050mm to the top crossbar allows for most cars and 4x4 vehicles to be lifted to full height, and optional 600mm or 1200mm extensions are available for extra large high-roof vans.

For more information see automaster.co.nz, or call Automaster on 0800 214 604.

ASYMMETRICAL AND SYMMETRICAL OPTIONS

This lift includes the option to install asymmetrically for better door opening, or symmetrically for better drive-through clearance. Asymmetrical design is where the columns are rotated 30º to place the approximate centre of gravity of the vehicle in line with the optimum load capability of the column, and the vehicle sitting back further on the lift since most vehicles are front-heavy.

Symmetrical lifting centres the vehicle front to rear in the bay, with the vehicle’s centre of gravity and the lift aligned, equalising the load on the columns, carriage, and bearings.

Hayman Reese boosts EV range of towbars

HAYMAN REESE HAS LAUNCHED ITS FIRST THREE-MODEL LINE OF EV TOWBARS TO THE NEW ZEALAND MARKET, BACKED WITH EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO SUCCESSFULLY INSTALL A TOWBAR, EITHER FOR TOWING OR HITCH-MOUNTED CYCLE RACKS

Hayman Reese has made significant strides in catering to the evolving needs of electric vehicle (EV) owners in New Zealand with the launch of its inaugural line of EV towbars. This new range addresses the growing demand for towing capabilities among EV drivers while ensuring compatibility and safety.

The EV range comprises three distinct models tailored to fit popular EV models in the market: the Tesla Model 3 Sedan, the Tesla Model Y SUV, and the BYD ATTO3. How one Wynn’s against a blocked particulate filter

WYNN’S DPF AND GPF ON-CAR CLEANER MAKE IT EASY TO CLEAN A BLOCKED PARTICULATE FILTER WITHOUT THE NEED TO REMOVE THE FILTER FROM THE VEHICLE, SAVING YOUR WORKSHOP TIME AND MONEY

DPF stands for ‘diesel particulate filter’ and GFP for ‘gasoline particulate filter’, and they are equipped in many modern vehicles to filter out and trap the harmful particulates that usually come out of the exhaust. While this is great for the environment, it adds another complexity to vehicles, which could result in a dreaded amber light on the dashboard indicating that the DPF or GFP is blocked.

Wynn’s DPF & GPF On-Car Cleaner formulation has been developed to allow workshops to clean out and restore particulate filters in diesel and petrol vehicles safely, quickly, and efficiently without removing the filter from the vehicle.

The product is a non-flammable formulation that removes soot and ash deposits from all blocked diesel and gasoline particulate filters. It is easy to use; simply check for

fault codes and confirm Particulate Filter blockage. Then, check the engine oil level. In case of oil/fuel dilution, carry out a Wynn’s Engine or Diesel Engine Flush and change the oil and filter. It is then important that you confirm that the vehicle has as least a quarter of a tank of fuel before commencing treatment. Bring the vehicle up to operating temperature and switch off the engine. For Euro 6 diesel vehicles, disconnect the air flow sensor to prevent the low-pressure EGR Valve operating during treatment.

Next, to apply Wynn’s DPF & GPF On-Car Cleaner, feed the applicator tube directly into the particulate filter via either the metal pressure sensor pipe, temperature sensor, or oxygen sensor. Ensure the chosen sensor is lower than the turbo to prevent product running back into the engine.

NZ’s automotive icon Sir Colin Giltrap passes away at 84

THE NEW ZEALAND AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY MOURNS THE LOSS OF A TRUE GIANT, SIR COLIN GILTRAP, WHO DIED PEACEFULLY AT HIS HOME ON 18 APRIL AGED 84

Sir Colin was a successful businessman who built the influential Giltrap Group, a passionate supporter of motorsport, and a philanthropist who left a lasting mark on the country. His journey in the automotive world began in the 1960s when he co-founded Monaco Motors, a car dealership in Hamilton. His entrepreneurial spirit and keen eye for opportunity led him to expand into Auckland in the 1970s with the acquisition of a Mazda and Audi dealership on Great North Road, which marked the beginning of the Giltrap Group as we know it today.

Driven by ambition and a commitment to excellence, Sir Colin’s vision continued to shape the Group’s growth trajectory. In 1977, he established European Motor Distributors, securing the import and distribution rights for Volkswagen and Audi. Over the next few decades, the Giltrap Group witnessed a series of strategic acquisitions; branches in Newmarket and the North Shore broadened

the Group’s reach, while the purchase of a Toyota franchise in 1989 and the subsequent import and distribution rights for MercedesBenz further diversified its portfolio. The Giltrap Motor Group was subsequently renamed Giltrap Prestige, reflecting its growing prestige and brand representation.

Sir Colin’s vision extended beyond established brands. He recognised the potential of emerging players and brought Aston Martin and Skoda distribution rights under the Giltrap wing, ensuring the group remained at the forefront of the ever-evolving automotive market. The development of purpose-built, state-of-the-art showrooms for Audi, VW, and Porsche along Great North Road further underscored his commitment to providing exceptional customer experiences. The addition of Lamborghini in the early 2000s cemented the Group’s position as a purveyor of luxury and performance vehicles.

Sir Colin’s contributions transcended

Then, spray Wynn’s DPF & GPF On-Car Cleaner into the particulate filter until the can is completely empty. Allow the product to soak for 15–30 minutes, refit the pressure sensor pipe or temperature/ oxygen sensor, and after soak time restart the engine and idle for five minutes, followed by running the engine at 2000–2500 rpm for five minutes.

If the air flow sensor was disconnected, it is now time to reconnect, clear fault codes, and reset particulate filter data if required. Carry out an extended road test and experience the difference!

For best practice, it is recommended that after treatment, you carry out a Wynn’s Air Intake and EGR System Clean, followed by a Wynn’s Engine or Diesel Engine Flush, and an oil and filter change according to OEM specifications.

the realm of business. Throughout his life, he demonstrated unwavering dedication to motorsport, fostering and supporting the careers of rising talents like Scott Dixon, Hayden Paddon, Liam Lawson, Earl Bamber, and Brendan Hartley. His commitment to nurturing young drivers played a significant role in shaping New Zealand’s motorsport legacy.

Sir Colin’s leadership and philanthropy were recognised in 2012 when he was awarded the prestigious Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (KNZM) for his services to motorsport and his philanthropic endeavours. The recognition, however, remained characteristically understated by Sir Colin, who remarked, “I’m just Colin, always have been and always will be”.

Sir Colin’s final year was marked by a decline in health following a fall in London. He is survived by his wife Lady Jennifer, their adult children and their families.

Former executive directors Peter Laurenson and Keith Robinson will remain integral to Adams & Currie, ensuring a smooth transition, while Pat Lagan has opted for a well-deserved retirement. Mear commended the outgoing shareholders for their commitment to excellence and acknowledged the strength of the Adams & Currie brand under their stewardship.

Assuring continuity, Mear affirmed that it will be business as usual for all Adams & Currie staff. “We will over time explore areas where Fruehauf’s capability can assist Adams & Currie and vice versa,” said Mear. “There

Northland roads needed

TWO LEADING NATIONAL INDUSTRY BODIES ARE SUPPORTING NORTHLAND’S ROADING INFRASTRUCTURE DRIVE

La Ara Aotearoa Transporting New Zealand interim chief executive Dom Kalasih, and Nick Leggett, chief executive of Infrastructure New Zealand, are backing the Northland Corporate Group report for critical infrastructure investment in Northland.

Recognising the region’s untapped economic potential, both organisations are urging the Government to prioritise the upgrade of State Highway 1 (SH1) between Whangarei and Auckland.

The report by the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER) quantifies the immense economic advantages of upgrading the vital roading link between Auckland and Northland. It underscores the necessity of a four-lane expressway to facilitate seamless connectivity between the two regions, emphasising the potential for significant economic growth, reduced travel times and operating costs, and enhanced safety.

“The current state of Northland’s highway network acts as a significant barrier to economic growth in the region,” Dom Kalasih says.

“Transporting heavy freight through Northland can be perilous, and this inhibits Northport’s ability to service Auckland. However, with strategic infrastructure investments, billions of pouds in economic potential could be unlocked, benefiting not only Northland but also the wider country.”

Infrastructure New Zealand and Transporting New Zealand

are several areas where there are distinct synergies but not concerning people numbers. We forecast to be growing staff numbers over future months to help attend to our growing South Island service offer.”

The addition of Adams & Currie’s manufacturing site in Christchurch complements Fruehauf’s existing facilities in Feilding and Auckland, further consolidating its position as a market leader in trailer builds. Despite competition in the industry, Fruehauf remains steadfast in its commitment to excellence, with Adams & Currie playing a pivotal role in expanding its reach to loyal South Island customers and fortifying its product resilience and service offerings.

acknowledge the Government’s designation of SH1 as a Road of National Significance and its commitment to upgrading the highway. However, they believe that further commitments are necessary to fully realise the economic benefits of a wholesale upgrade of the route.

“The case for a Northland Expressway is about backing Northland to succeed, but it’s also about resilience and the growth of Auckland,” Nick Leggett says.

“Our regions can’t sit in splendid isolation; they need resilient 21st-century connections to our major centres. We believe the Government should fast-track the commitments they have already made for SH1 through Northland.”

Those commitments include the construction of a four-lane highway alternative to the Brynderwyns and extending four-lane upgrades from Warkworth to Whangarei.

Transporting New Zealand and Infrastructure New Zealand support the Northland Corporate Group in its recommendation that the Government commit to a four-lane expressway along the entire length of SH1 to Auckland, with a vision of enhancing accessibility to Northland by 2040.

“We agree that it’s time to empower the north and unleash its economic potential to benefit its communities and New Zealand. The Government should push hard and deliver a comprehensive expressway through publicprivate partnerships to get the entire route completed faster and to a high standard,” say Kalasih and Leggett.

Purpose-built batteries for stop-start systems

ACDELCO UNDERSTANDS THE EVOLVING POWER REQUIREMENTS OF THE AUTOMOTIVE BATTERY AND CONTINUES TO DEVELOP PRODUCTS TO FULFIL THESE NEEDS

Automotive batteries have gone through significant advancements and improvements over the decades. In the early years, the primary purpose of an automotive battery was to provide reliable starting power for a vehicle’s engine to enable it to travel from one place to another. While this purpose remains, much more is required from an automotive battery today. Modern Idle Stop Start (ISS) vehicles have complex electrical systems that rely on the battery to power control modules, headlights, audio systems, GPS navigation devices, and other accessories while the engine is stopped. Battery manufacturers have had to keep up with these new technologies. ACDelco understands the evolving power requirements of the automotive battery and continues to develop products to fulfil these needs.

The key feature of ISS technology is the ability to turn off the engine when the vehicle is stationary and automatically restart it when required. This process results in reduced fuel consumption and emissions. Vehicle manufacturers have adopted this technology to take advantage of these benefits, and as a result, we are seeing more ISS-equipped vehicles on the road than ever before.

Contrary to popular belief, conventional automotive batteries are unsuitable for ISS vehicles. Installing a conventional battery will lead to premature battery failure. ACDelco Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) and Enhanced Flooded Batteries (EFB) are specially designed for use in ISS systems.

ACDelco AGM batteries are ideal for premium petrol and diesel ISS vehicles with high electrical demands. The battery in these vehicles will be required to crank the engine around 16,000 times more per annum compared to a conventional vehicle (based on average CBD travel of 15,000km), and therefore require a battery capable of handling these higher power demands. Features and benefits of ACDelco AGM batteries include high-compression absorbent glass mat separators, increased cycle life and charge acceptance compared to their standard flooded counterparts, higher cranking power (even at low State of Charge), maintenance-free operation, and a high vibration resistance.

ACDelco EFB batteries are designed to perform in vehicles where an EFB has been specified. Many manufacturers use EFB batteries as they are a cost-effective,

high-performance battery suited to ISS applications. ISS vehicles require a battery that can support the repeated demand for engine cranking while at a partial State of Charge. Key features and benefits of the EFB range include an ultra-high density plate material for improved corrosion resistance, lead calcium grids with increased tin content, high CCA (even at partial State of Charge) and an improved reserve capacity and charge acceptance.

ACDelco AGM and EFB batteries are laboratory-tested, field-proven, and have undergone numerous quality control checks prior to being released in the market. The impressive warranty period provided for these batteries is a testament to their quality and performance capabilities. The AGM battery range comes with a 36-month warranty, while the EFB range carries a 24-month warranty.

ACDelco is a global leader in the battery industry, with more than 100 years of manufacturing experience. The brand’s comprehensive range of batteries reflects its understanding of the changing landscape.

Credited with supplying batteries for navy planes during World War II and also assisting with NASA’s moon exploration mission in the 1970s, they now play a critical role in the performance of modern vehicles. ACDelco has proven time and time again why it is the market leader.

The complete ACDelco battery range consists of automotive, commercial, deepcycle, and marine and lawnmower batteries. The comprehensiveness of the portfolio makes ACDelco a great choice for businesses catering to multiple demographics. Parts distributors, battery resellers, and auto electricians in New Zealand have the opportunity to distribute a globally renowned brand by joining the ACDelco Battery Stockist Program that R&J Batteries operate.

This program offers varying levels of support to allow businesses of different sizes and scales to participate. The allocation of resources and support for stockists is determined based on their chosen sign-up level. A key component of the program is the inclusion of ACDelco Battery Stockist identification, which holds significant importance. Stockists are granted a subsidy allowance for building and vehicle signage to solidify their position as an authorised reseller of ACDelco batteries within the local community. Stockists also receive substantial support for Local Area Marketing (LAM) for further exposure and awareness. They also benefit from branded merchandise, a battery catalogue, and various point-of-sale materials. Comprehensive training on ACDelco products, including their features and benefits, is also provided to enhance their selling capabilities.

R&J Batteries is the exclusive distributor of ACDelco batteries in New Zealand, with branches in Wiri, Christchurch, Hamilton, Albany, and Nelson. For more information about ACDelco batteries or the ACDelco Battery Stockist Program, please visit rjbatt.co.nz or call 0800 546 000.

Land IndustryTransport: voices

WE LOOK AT SOME OF THE SUBMISSIONS TO THE GOVERNMENT POLICY STATEMENT ON LAND TRANSPORT

Early this March, the Minister of Transport released the draft Government Policy Statement on land transport (GPS) 2024 for feedback.

The draft GPS outlined the Government’s plan for investing in land transport over the next 10 years by directing $7 billion per year in expenditure from the National Land Transport Fund (NLTF).

According to the government, the draft GPS prioritises economic growth and productivity, increased maintenance and resilience, safety, and value for money from transport expenditure. It also reintroduces the Roads of National Significance programme, which was started under the previous Government in 2009. Following consultation, the Ministry of Transport will use the feedback to provide advice on the final GPS 2024, which will be in effect by July 2024. Consultation closed on 2 April 2024.

Here is a breakdown of some of the principal submissions presented to the government by some players in the industry:

THE MOTOR TRADE ASSOCIATION

The MTA serves as the authoritative voice of New Zealand’s automotive industry. It represents over 4000 businesses that fix, fuel, buy, sell, and inspect the country’s vehicle fleet — helping families and communities travel and connect safely. Their members work in general and specialist automotive repair, service stations, parts and accessories, new and used vehicle dealers, collision repair, and vehicle recovery.

The MTA generally supports the government’s direction on transportation, recognising the need for change since the last GPS. They endorse policies improving road safety through varied approaches, not just speed limit reductions. MTA welcomes increased road maintenance funding to

combat deteriorating conditions, emphasising the importance of smart enforcement, particularly targeting impaired driving.

One of the main points by the MTA which would have a direct impact on workshop owners and technicians is their suggestion to transition vehicle inspections for older cars (15-plus years old) to occur every six months instead of yearly to ensure safety.

being. Balancing funding across different activity classes is essential to address existing infrastructure deficiencies.

Regarding future plans, MTA appreciates the focus on long-term infrastructure goals and alternative funding mechanisms like universal Road User Charges. They advocate for clear timelines and efficient spending to address the cost-of-living crisis while ensuring projects align with transportation outcomes. MTA supports NZTA’s need to pivot and enhance confidence, suggesting diverse funding and delivery models for major projects. They emphasise the importance of value for money and long-term viability, highlighting the need for innovation in funding and project commissioning.

Additionally, MTA suggests exploring wider transport options and local incentives, especially in regions implementing time-of-use charging schemes, to encourage sustainable transportation choices.

TRANSPORTATION NEW ZEALAND GROUP

The Transportation Group is the leading industry body for professionals in transportation engineering, planning, and related fields. It represents over 1,000 transport professionals from around Aotearoa.

Air pollution and vehicle noise have significant health impacts, leading to thousands of deaths, hospitalisations, and asthma cases annually. Promoting healthier transport options can mitigate these issues and reduce public health spending. Shifting away from car-centric infrastructure towards safer and more accessible options like walking and cycling can yield economic benefits and improve overall well-

Greenfield development with highways may limit public transport options and increase long-term costs and congestion. Investing in urban intensification can stimulate economic growth, provide affordable housing, and reduce traffic volumes.

Efforts to reduce deaths and injuries from road crashes should involve a broader range of tools beyond speed limit changes, including infrastructure improvements and safer urban design.

Meeting legal obligations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions requires integrating transport and land-use planning efficiently. Electrification alone may not suffice, necessitating a shift towards sustainable travel options.

While benefit-cost analysis is crucial for decision-making, it should not be the sole metric, and projects should be assessed consistently. Some projects may require additional scrutiny, irrespective of size.

INFRASTRUCTURE NZ

INZ is New Zealand’s membership organisation for the infrastructure sector. They promote best practice in national infrastructure development through research, advocacy, and public and private sector collaboration. Their members come from diverse sectors across New Zealand and include infrastructure service providers, investors, and operators

INZ appreciates the draft GPS’s emphasis on maintaining and operating both roads and public transport. Urgent attention is needed for timely maintenance due to past neglect. Climate change-induced extreme weather events highlight the importance of asset care. Sustainable funding for land transport, though improved, remains insufficient. A fair funding system for all road users is necessary. Reliance on Crown funding for major projects limits longterm planning. Alternative funding tools must be explored for timely infrastructure delivery.

An insult to the collision repair industry

THE MOTOR TRADE ASSOCIATION POINTS THE FINGER AT THE GOVERNMENT AFTER IT AXES KEY AUTOMOTIVE ROLES FROM THE IMMIGRATION GREEN LIST

The Government’s axing of key automotive roles from the immigration Green List is a shock and an insult to the collision repair industry, the Motor Trade Association (MTA) said in a recent statement.

The Minister of Immigration announced early April that the roles of panel beater and vehicle painter — which the previous government committed to adding to the Green List — now won’t be.

MTA chief executive Lee Marshall says, “The decision is disrespectful to the collision repair industry, and quite frankly ignorant of the labour shortage pressures that businesses in this sector have been suffering for years. The process to have these roles added to the Green List was rigorous, but the decision to revoke them has shown none of the same care.”

Mr Marshall says wait times for collision repair are already high across the country, with 92 per cent of businesses recently surveyed having at least one unfilled panel beater or spray painter vacancy, many with multiple vacancies, and some larger businesses with more than 10. As a business concern, our survey told us clearly that staff shortages are bigger than even the cost of living.

According to the Collision Repair Association, a chapter of MTA, the panel and

paint industry is short of nearly 1000 skilled workers, or one in five roles in the industry.

Lee says it’s particularly disappointing after Immigration Minister Erica Stanford committed previously to consulting with the industry.

It’s important to note that the decision will also impact motorists. “They will be off the road for longer, as it will mean delays in getting their vehicle repaired and returned to them,” Lee says.

Without the certainty of residence that the Green List offered, it will be very hard to attract people from overseas, Lee says. Putting the onus on business owners to lift pay rates also misses the mark as there aren’t enough skilled professionals in the country. “Overseas workers are still strongly needed,” Lee says. “Investing in education locally is the long-term answer, and that’s something we have campaigned heavily on, but it won’t resolve today’s problem. We urge the Minister to revisit this decision immediately.”

The Motor Trade Association (MTA) was founded in 1917. MTA currently represents more than 4000 businesses within the automotive industry. Members include automotive repairers (both heavy and light

WHAT IS THE GREEN LIST

The Green List simplifies hiring for high-demand skilled roles in New Zealand, offering clear residence pathways for eligible migrants. It includes a select few occupations with specific requirements detailed on the Immigration New Zealand website. Employers are exempt from advertising proof for these roles. Eligible migrants have direct residence application options or can qualify after working in New Zealand, with partners granted open work rights.

The Green List complements other pathways to residence, such as the Skilled Migrant Category.

Turbo Tease

YOU CAN GO FAST IN THE OLDSMOBILE JETFIRE … BUT YOU’LL HAVE TO TOP UP YOUR TURBO ROCKET FLUID FIRST

Turbochargers aren’t exactly a big deal these days — most people probably have a rough idea what they are, or at least what they do. Your daily driven ute probably has one, so might your mum’s hatchback. Hell, ‘turbo’ has even become a catch-all term for anything fast. Wind back the clock to the early sixties, though, and turbochargers were far from common and not something you’d know much about unless you were an engineer or you’d spent World War II in the air force tinkering on planes.

Despite their successful use in America’s P-38 and P-40 fighters, as well as bombers like the B-17, B-24, and B-29, surprisingly it wasn’t until nearly two decades after the war ended in 1962 that US automakers first tried to take advantage of the turbocharger’s ability to dramatically enhance power in a production

vehicle. Now, a lot of people will tell you that that vehicle was the ’62 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder, while roughly the same amount of people will tell you that no, in fact, it was the ’62 Oldsmobile Jetfire, the subject of this month’s column.

The reality is that these two GM products came out at nearly the exact same time — nitpickers will often point out that the Oldsmobile did come available to order about two weeks before the Corvair, though. Technologically, the two cars couldn’t be further from each other, with the Corvair being a rear-engined, air-cooled flat-six oddity with a rudimentary turbo system that didn’t even have a wastegate, while the Jetfire used an alloy V8 in the correct end of the car with a very interesting and somewhat complex forced induction system.

Engineers started with a smaller F-85 Oldsmobile Cutlass two-door hardtop body, due to its lighter weight, and opted to retain that car’s tiny 215ci (3.5-litre) all-alloy V8, a motor that had been introduced a couple of years earlier to appeal to those looking for more economy-focused performance. The little V8 was light, and in Power Pack trim made a respectable 185hp. The engineers’ goal with the Jetfire, however, was to boost that power up to the magical 1:1 cubic inch to horsepower figure of 215, and a turbo was the perfect way to do it. The problem? No one made turbochargers suitable for a vehicle, so they turned to a little company that’s since become a very big company named Garrett, then known for manufacturing huge turbo systems used in industrial motors. The team at Garrett got an understanding of the brief and went to work creating a small turbo system that could be used on the little V8.

28 Auto Channel Issue #68 May 2024

Sure, what Garrett came up with looks antiquated today, but for the time, it was quite advanced. The turbo and manifolds bolted up to the existing motor without too much fuss, and a wastegate inside the T5 turbo regulated boost at 6psi, resulting in a huge jump in performance up to the desired 215hp at 4600rpm, as well as a leap up to 300lb-ft of torque at 3200rpm. This made what was to be dubbed the ‘Jetfire’ substantially quicker than its naturally aspirated siblings, able to sprint to 100 twice as fast as the base model F-85. There was only one problem … and it was a fairly big one.

With a compression ratio of 10.25:1 and no intercooler in sight, engineers quickly found reality knocking during testing, as even the leaded fuel of the day couldn’t prevent the inevitable detonation from tearing the motor apart. An ingenious and maybe slightly hilarious solution was mixed up — literally — in the form of ‘Turbo Rocket Fluid’. This could only be bought at Oldsmobile dealers of course and was a mix of water, methyl alcohol, and a little water-soluble oil to keep the diaphragms from drying out.

This was kept in a sealed canister that would be pressurised once the system went from vacuum to boost, which would force the fluid through an orifice and into the intake, substantially dropping the intake charge temperature, and thwarting detonation. Because the fluid would only be

29

KNOWLEDGE BLAST

consumed if that driver wanted to go fast — according to Oldsmobile, at least — a bottle of Turbo Rocket Fluid could last anywhere from 300 miles to 3000, depending on how much of a lunatic the person behind the wheel was.

The obvious question is: what happens when the fluid runs out? What’s to stop Betty Sue from lunching her motor on her way to the drive-in? Garrett’s engineers thought of this too, and a clever bypass valve system was fitted that detected when the fluid had run dry and didn’t allow the motor to build boost.

Despite the very clear messaging and a futuristic marketing push, the Jetfire’s downfall lies in GM’s overestimation of the driving public. Soon after going on sale, hundreds of Jetfires began rolling back through the dealership gates, complete with annoyed owners behind the wheel complaining of a lack of power. Of course, their Turbo Rocket Fluid had run out. And while there was plenty more to buy, the realisation that they’d be forever having to head back to the Oldsmobile dealer and drop the cash on refills began to properly dawn on them. Customers were unhappy. By 1965, so many were displeased that GM launched a program in which owners could bring their Jetfires in and have the turbo system swapped out for a traditional four-barrel carb setup. Most drivers did exactly that, which is why finding a still-turbocharged ’62 or ’63 Jetfire today is nearly impossible. According to the owners’ club, there are only 120-odd intact Jetfires left that still retain the original turbo system, making them an exceptionally rare vehicle that almost never come up for sale.

At well under 1300kg, the 215hp Jetfire was a solid street performer for its day with plenty of acceleration and some unusual noises under the bonnet to match. It was, however, probably too ahead of its time and was not properly understood or appreciated by the public of the day. But, hey, someone’s got to do it first, right?

South Island gets new race

BRIBERY, LOOSE INTERPRETATION OF RULES, AND UNEXPLAINED PENALTIES ARE PART AND PARCEL OF THIS WACKY, BUDGET CAR RACE ANNOUNCED FOR THE SOUTH ISLAND

For the first time in 10 years, the Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell and popular New Zealand grass-roots motorsport series organiser NaZCAR are teaming up to deliver a first-of-its-kind ‘Lemons endurance racing event’ on Saturday, 2 November.

NaZCAR Lemons is budget-friendly motorsport, originating in 2016. It’s grassroots racing aimed at all skill levels. “The ‘spirit’ of the event is to build and drive a medium-level but fun car on a professional track for hours on end… and see if it (and your team) can last the distance,” according to organisers.

Participants are urged to get or build a cheap car and make it into a worthy competitor, add safety gear (roll cage, seat, harness, HANS, kill switch, and fire extinguisher), and race for up to 24 hours with their team. These events are inclusive and have specific lap time criteria. Participants are encouraged to embrace the fun, dress up, and enjoy ample seat time.

This year, the organiser confirms that the Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell circuit will host a second South Island event for NaZCAR Lemons crews later this year.

“It’s one of the most coveted venue/date combinations on the local long-distance/ endurance racing landscape. Endurance racing and Highlands go hand-in-hand, and we’ve hosted some fantastic events over the past 10 years, from the 101s to our recent Highlands 6-Hour, which was a great success,” say organisers.

Over the past eight years, NaZCAR Lemons have regularly raced at Hampton Downs and Taupo International Motorsport Park, and this marks a new expansion into the South Island.

A meet at Highlands has been a long time in the making for series founder Dr Jacob Simonsen, who recognises the support he has received from the Tony Quinn-led group has helped NaZCAR Lemons bloom.

“Highlands is the holy grail of racetracks in this country, so the excitement level from us is beyond ecstatic to be able to come and play there,” he said.

As for the rules? “It’s a bit like Whose Line is It Anyway; the points don’t matter!” adds Dr Simonsen, “We prefer to see them as motorsport events where the accent is more on fun, than the traditional win at all costs mentality which has held sway in motorsport circles for so long. Ideally, competitors’ cars should be as crappy and unique as possible, and they mustn’t be able to lap whichever circuit we are running an event at quicker than an ideal lap time that we set per class before each event.”

Citing precious races, Dr Simonsen says themes and costumes are the norm and races come “complete with bizarre penalties and lap manipulation by the judges. Most of the teams also got right into the bribery and corruption ethos, with one team even cooking lunch for the judges; by stuffing pies and sausages under the hood and (literally) burning around the track until said savouries were considered piping hot!”

Though many of the cars that end up on a Lemons (value at time of purchase $1,000 or less) no longer represent the peak of performance and/ or prestige they might once have when they were new, “it is still quite amazing how well a typical Lemon car can go around a circuit,” say organisers.

All funds from these races go to the Lemons Foundation, a non-profit organisation that engages Kiwis in motoring activities through safety and driver training programmes, community initiatives, mechanical awareness, as well as team and individual confidence courses and development.

NaZCAR 24 Hours of Lemons event in the North Island, the three-day Hampton Hooptiefest, kicks off on Friday, 10 May. The South Island portion will take place 2 November. For more information visit naZcar.nz.
