NAPA centennial celebration in 2025: A century of automotive excellence

IT IS NEVER TOO EARLY TO START PLANNING A BIRTHDAY, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAPPEN TO BE TURNING 100 AND PART OF THE CELEBRATIONS INVOLVE 15,000 GUESTS GATHERING IN LAS VEGAS

N

ational Automotive Parts Association’s (NAPA) journey began in 1925 when a group of independent auto parts sellers united in Detroit, United States, to form the National Automotive Parts Association. Their mission was simple: to improve the distribution of auto parts to serve the people and businesses who increasingly relied on cars and trucks for their transportation needs. Over the decades, NAPA has evolved into a powerhouse operating in Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and Australasia. It has become a trusted partner for countless professionals

and enthusiasts in the automotive industry, and in the United States alone, its network offers 500,000-plus unique parts distributed across 57 distribution centres, 6000-plus NAPA Auto Parts stores and 17000-plus NAPA Auto Care centres. The NAPA team have very real reasons to want to celebrate this level of success. In the dynamic and exciting world of automotive parts distribution, milestones are not just celebrated but are also significant markers of success, evolution, and enduring commitment. As NAPA gears up to mark its 100th

anniversary in 2025, the anticipation is palpable and involves a grand celebration within the framework of its NAPA Expo 2025, which will be set against the dazzling backdrop of Las Vegas from 14-17 April, 2025. The anticipation for the NAPA Expo 2025 is heightened by the success of the last Expo in 2022. From an electrifying kick-off in Vegas to showcasing the latest products and industry trends, the 2022 iteration of the Expo set the stage for what promises to be an even more remarkable centennial celebration.

The NAPA Expo 2022 gathered NAPA network members globally for a comprehensive trade show, seminars, and special events. Originally planned for 2020, the event drew attendees from the United States, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and Canada. As one of the first post-restriction international aftermarket events, it served as a crucial platform for suppliers to showcase their offerings. Discussions at the event encompassed industry challenges, notably the Right to Repair legislation and the pressing issue of staffing for shops and jobbers. Seminars addressed topics such as combating comebacks, business process guidance, and insights into emerging technologies. The event, which was held in the height of summer (July of 2022), featured networking events and general sessions with leading speakers and culminated in a gala concert headlined by the Goo Goo Dolls and Keith Urban.

NAPA EXPO 2025: A ONCE-IN-ALIFETIME OPPORTUNITY With such a precedent as the 2022 Expo, the upcoming NAPA Expo 2025 in Las Vegas is not just going to be ‘another trade show’; it’s a once-in-ageneration opportunity to be part of the rich and successful history of this brand. NAPA NZ, a relative newcomer at 3.5 years old but backed by over 250 years of combined experience in the New Zealand market, invites enthusiasts and professionals to join them in celebrating this monumental occasion. The event promises a rich array of activities, including networking sessions, seminars, and insights from guest speakers who are industry experts. With a focus on the latest products, solutions, ADAS, and cutting-edge tools and equipment, attendees can expect to gain valuable knowledge to meet the growing demands of the automotive industry. Some of the highlights planned for the event include: Technological Insight: The timing of the event couldn’t be more perfect, offering attendees a deep dive into the significant technological changes sweeping the automotive industry. Knowledge Exchange: Learn from the extensive NAPA AutoCare network, comprising over 17,000 workshops across America, providing insights into attracting and retaining the best technicians in the face of current skill shortages. Record-Breaking Event: Anticipated to be the biggest NAPA Expo to date, the centennial celebration will host over 15,000 delegates and feature more than 300 suppliers at the trade show. NAPA Racing Showcase: Get up close and personal with some of the best of NAPA Racing, experiencing the excitement and precision that fuels their success on the track.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST: YOUR GATEWAY TO NAPA EXPO 2025 NAPA — who is not a newcomer to the world of hosting or facilitating exciting events, as witnessed by anyone who has been to its golf tournaments, V8 Supercar events on the Gold Coast, or participated in the renowned SEMA Trade Show — is actively seeking expressions of interest from those eager to be part of this historic event. Interested individuals can either scan a QR code or connect with their NAPA representative to express

their desire to attend. Notably, there is no charge for expressions of interest, but limited spaces mean that interested parties will be contacted to discuss available packages. To make the celebration even more special, NAPA is working with attendees to create opportunities to win or earn some or all of the costs of the trip back. This unique initiative is a testament to NAPA’s commitment to ensuring that as many automotive industry specialists and enthusiasts as possible can join in the centennial festivities.

PLAN YOUR TRIP, SHAPE YOUR FUTURE As NAPA turns 100, attendees are not only invited to celebrate the past but also to shape the future. The Expo offers the potential to extend your trip and add additional experiences. Why not plan the trip you’ve always wanted, ticking items off your bucket list while setting your business up for future success? The NAPA Expo 2025 in Las Vegas promises to be an event of unparalleled magnitude — a gathering that will not only celebrate the past but also chart the course for the next century of automotive greatness. ACDelco batteries. ACDelco M Series and HCM Series batteries are specifically designed for recreational and marine applications. The ACDelco M Series consists of marine starting batteries which provide high cold cranking amps to start recreational applications reliably. M Series batteries come with many other features; they have large intercell connectors that increase reliability and cranking performance, increased capacity, and dual terminals (stainless steel stud and SAE post). HAYMAN REESE INSTALLER NETWORK

Hayman Reese boosts EV range of towbars HYAMAN REESE HAS LAUNCHED ITS FIRST THREE-MODEL LINE OF EV TOWBARS TO THE NEW ZEALAND MARKET, BACKED WITH EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO SUCCESSFULLY INSTALL A TOWBAR, EITHER FOR TOWING OR HITCH-MOUNTED CYCLE RACKS

T

he EV range features the following three models: the Tesla Model 3 Sedan, the Tesla Model Y SUV, and the BYD ATTO3. All three models are equipped with the traditional Class 4 titan hitch set-up, which allows for easy tongue removal in tight car parks or when using the increasingly popular i-hitch mounted cycle racks. These cycle racks are more secure and can easily handle the weight of bigger cycle racks such as the Rola VBR system (subject to vehicle download weights). Additionally, all three models come with the required plug-and-play Smart Click wiring systems that integrate into the vehicle for safe towing or usage of light boards for the cycle racks and with the Tesla manual override for the rear parking sensors.

WHAT’S IN THE BOX? The towbars are supplied in 100 per cent recyclable boxes, as Hayman Reese aims to reduce its nonrecyclable waste to a minimum. Each towbar comes with fitting kits to mount to the vehicle, the famous Hayman Reese Collar protector, and the revolutionary Smart Pin for the towbar tongue. For the BYD Atto, there is a tongue with a tow ball included in the kit, as well as the main part of the wiring harness. Regarding the two Tesla models, company research into what most Tesla drivers wanted the towbar for found that an overwhelming amount of drivers were only using the towbar for cycle racks rather than towing. Therefore, for these

models, the towbar tongue and tow ball are an optional extra, as are the wiring ECUs and wiring tails to complete the wiring side of things across the three models. Fitting instructions are included, so those who are mechanically minded and have the correct tools can install themselves. “This is a first for us, selling a towbar without a tongue, but it’s the feedback we got back from drivers of these models,” says a Hayman Reese NZ spokesperson.

Hayman Reese has a nationwide network of professional installers. Their towbars are warranted for as long as you own them, and their parent company has a wealth of experience in building networks of installers across Australia. Auto Pacific NZ is proud to draw from that experience and has hand-picked a team of professional installers to represent the Hayman Reese brand in New Zealand. The Hayman Reese network is a group of professional towbar and vehicle accessory installers who provide quality fitment of their products to any vehicle. The Hayman Reese sales team sends your order to the selected installer, ensuring the product matches any vehicle and is received in time. Their network of installers is backed by ongoing support from Hayman Reese throughout the process, from the time you order through to completion. They are able to draw on the full Hayman Reese resources, including product information, training, and direct personal access to the Hayman Reese factory. The Hayman Reese EV range of towbars is available via the Hayman Reese Retail Installer website haymanreese.co.nz. If you want to become an installer, please contact us on 0800 698 227.

ABOUT HAYMAN REESE Hayman Reese offers the widest range of towbars on the market. All towbars are specifically designed, tested, and manufactured to suit the towing vehicle, with uncompromising quality built into each product. Their Quality Management System has been certified to ISO 9001 and is QS9000 accredited. Their testing facilities have been certified as a NATA accredited laboratory to AS ISO/IEC 17025, ISO/TS16949, and ISO14001. Their environmental management system has been certified to ISO 14001. Hayman Reese product development engineers keep up with modern vehicle and chassis designs by using sophisticated modelling, finite element analysis, and other rigorous testing programmes. Built with premium materials, Hayman Reese utilises the latest in laser cutting technology to ensure each component is cut and machined to the tightest of tolerances, guaranteeing you receive the best possible product that fits your vehicle precisely.

conditions. The other improvement is that the slots aid in ‘cleaning’ the pads as they pass over the slot edges, minimising pad build-up and inhibiting brake shudder. DBA provides two different slot patterns for most vehicles across its three tiers of disc rotors (Street Series, 4000 Series, and 5000 Series) that can be coupled with different brake pad composites to enhance performance. For those seeking a further visual differentiator and as a replacement for some European marques, DBA supplies either drilled only or drilled and slotted variants. These designs allow gas/particle ‘venting’ as per slotted-only versions. But the cross-drilled holes also participate in the outgassing. The crossdrilling may also ‘clear’ water in wet conditions, allowing for earlier dry braking. In a parked position, the cross-drilling provides an excellent aesthetic for your vehicle. They look great! The DBA range, as outlined, is designed for applications from daily driving (Street Series) to performance (4000 Series, 5000 Series).

Braking the DBA way ARE YOU KEEN TO IMPROVE YOUR CUSTOMER INTERACTIONS REGARDING BRAKING OPTIONS IN YOUR AUTOMOTIVE WORKSHOP? IN THIS ARTICLE, WE DIVE INTO KEY CONSIDERATIONS THAT WILL HELP YOU TO OFFER VALUABLE ADVICE AND GUIDANCE TO CUSTOMERS, ENSURING A SIMPLE DISCUSSION ON THE RANGE OF BRAKING SOLUTIONS AVAILABLE WHICH BRAKES ARE BEST FOR YOUR the customer opts for a high-performance rotor CUSTOMER? such as the DBA 5000 Series — and the materials People are surrounded by ‘systems’ when driving their cars these days. The visible ones, such as electronics and connectivity, have become commonplace. However, rarely do people consider the hidden systems, like their brakes. Brakes are often taken for granted, and few people consider how they work and how they safely bring the vehicle to a critical stop when needed; let alone ask themselves, can I improve my brakes and create a safer environment for myself and my passengers? To help you recommend the ‘right’ brakes for your customer, let’s first look at what they may have as ‘standard’ brakes and their performance aspects. Most vehicles from the factory are fitted with plain brake rotors. Some niche vehicles have alternatives, but we will get to those further on. The standard plain-face rotor works by creating friction between the rotor and the brake pad face. This, in turn, creates heat. Depending on the driving type and what extra activities are undertaken, these rotors can, if abused, warp or be damaged prematurely, limiting life. That said, a plain rotor is more than sufficient for daily use under normal general driving conditions and will provide for thousands of kilometres of driving. Hence, these are the applications of choice as standard rotors in most OE vehicles.

WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS? If your customer wants to improve the braking performance and enhance the look of their vehicle, an excellent place to start is DBA ‘slotted’ rotors. These rotors can be added without any upgrades or changing pad profile unless the customer wishes to. The base rotor for DBA’s slotted designs is essentially the same — unless

10

Auto Channel Issue #64 December 2023

and how they are manufactured are consistent with any OE-supplied rotor.

SO WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? The slots provide for some unique performance upgrades. The rotor slots come in various styles and profiles but essentially do the same function. Slots are designed to allow gases and brake dust to escape from the system. The benefit is that it creates better contact between the rotor and the pad. How? The microscopic particles of worn rotor and pad as braking occurs are expelled along the slot paths, reducing heat and enhancing the life of the brake system. Depending on your driving habits, this may also minimise warping under extreme

BRAKE PADS Next, we’re on to the brake pads. Generally, most pads available in the market, including the DBA Street Performance range, are designed with slots and chamfers to reduce vibration and noise when braking. However, there are some simple questions to ask that help to decide which type of pad suits. Suppose a vehicle mainly does everyday street driving. In that case, pads with either ceramic or semi-metallic friction material will more than adequately do the job. Ceramic offers what is known as a ‘clean wheel’ solution as it emits no visible brake dust. On the other hand, semi-metallic performs consistently well at high temperatures. DBA Street Performance pads would suit if your customer’s vehicle is a high-powered car, SUV, or LCV. These are also semi-metallic but contain carbon fibres to perform at even higher temperatures. Finally, if your customer has towing and/ or off-road driving in mind, or when it comes to performance cars used at track days, then it is recommended to look closely at DBA Xtreme Performance pads as these provide for the best bite while still being low in copper content. FUCHS lubricants – moving your world KEEPING THE WORLD MOVING WITH UNCONDITIONAL RELIABILITY, FUCHS CONTINUES ITS INVESTMENT IN THE AUSTRALASIAN REGION BOTH THROUGH FACILITIES AND CARING FOR ITS ENVIRONMENT

W

ith a local history spanning more than 100 years, FUCHS continues to listen to its customers and invest in Australasia. With two state-ofthe-art manufacturing plants already in the region, they have recently opened a new National Distribution Centre (NDC) in Derrimut, Victoria. The state-ofthe-art 17,000m2 facility is managed and operated by FUCHS Lubricants Australasia’s partner Linfox and serves not only the automotive aftermarket but also the mining, agricultural, industrial, construction, and transportation markets across Australia and New Zealand. “The new NDC meets the highest quality, safety, and environmental standards,” a spokesperson said. “It features a high degree of digitalisation, advanced warehouse management systems and order fulfilment processes, and numerous initiatives supporting a sustainable operating environment.” The building has been designed to five-star Green Star design standards, which includes a 99kW solar array.

ENERGY FROM THE SUN Sustainability is important to both FUCHS and its customers, and the new NDC is not the only facility harnessing the power of the sun to ensure sustainable operations. Large solar power arrays have also been

installed atop two manufacturing plants in Australia. “The energy from the sun supports a sustainable manufacturing environment, which is a key part of the overall FUCHS sustainability strategy,” said Thomas Blaikie, FUCHS sustainability manager Australasia, India and South East Asia. “At its peak output, the solar systems across both sites can generate up to 30 per cent of total electricity required to power the manufacturing plants.”

FUCHS INTRODUCES EASY SMALL PACK RANGE FUCHS, committed to being the first choice in lubricants, has globally optimised its small pack range, focusing on four-, five-, and seven-litre sizes. According to Anthony Ficarra, FUCHS brand and channel marketing manager for Australasia, India, and South East Asia, the enhanced range offers a premium bottle design

with clear labels, images, and lubricant quality categories for easy selection. The redesigned bottles and tamper-proof screw caps improve ergonomics, ensuring the range is user-friendly. The new small-pack range also has recycled and recyclable packaging and a CO2-compensated production process.

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN Addressing the challenges posed by the growing complexity of the Australasian car parc, FUCHS has introduced the Magnificent Seven, a core automotive workshop lubricant range. With high OEM approvals and advanced technology, this range offers workshops assurance of optimal vehicle performance and reliability. By consolidating lubricant stocking levels, workshops can reduce working capital while providing superior service to their customers.

REGO LOOKUP FUCHS introduces Rego Lookup, a user-friendly platform that makes lubricant selection effortless. By visiting fuchs.com/au/en/product-searchaus-nz workshops and customers can input their vehicle’s registration details to receive a comprehensive list of lubricants suitable for their vehicle, covering engine oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, and coolant. Why use quality radiator parts in your customers’ vehicles? ADRAD NATIONAL RADIATORS NZ KNOWS THAT A CAR’S RADIATOR IS CRUCIAL TO THE SAFE RUNNING OF A VEHICLE, WITH THE CAR’S COOLING SYSTEM PLAYING A KEY ROLE IN PREVENTING OVERHEATING AND ENHANCING FUEL ECONOMY

R

adiators are essential components of a car that can get damaged over time due to corroded tubes, faulty seals, or a cracked tank. ADRAD, New Zealand’s radiator specialist, knows that it is

not always necessary to replace the entire radiator. Instead, new radiator parts can be used to fix the issue, providing enhanced performance without the need for excessive investment.

0800 628 723

When it comes to radiators and parts, quality matters a lot. While cheaper radiators and parts may seem like a good option, they do not always meet the OEM design specifications for your vehicle. Choosing them could represent a false economy that may do more harm than good. ADRAD uses aluminium and copper alloys to manufacture radiators, ensuring better build quality and heat dispersal. Therefore, it makes financial sense to pay a little more for a quality part for your faulty radiator, which, in the long term, is more efficient to run and will outlast those cheaper versions. By opting for cheap, aftermarket parts, the risk of sub-standard workmanship increases, which can lead to the radiator failing and subsequent damage to the engine and your reputation. Trusting an ADRAD specialist to source quality radiator parts can save you from all these issues. ADRAD’s custom-made radiator solutions can lower coolant temperatures faster while offering greater reliability under high-temperature stresses. It is well worth seeking quality when it comes to radiator servicing, and ADRAD can advise you on the best course of action for your radiator. They can supply you with the highest quality radiators and radiator parts produced by trustworthy manufacturers. In addition, you can rely on their two-year radiator warranty support, which means you are covered no matter what. For more information contact ADRAD on 0800 628 723 to discuss your requirements or visit radiators.co.nz

Fuel and the holy grail IN THE REALM OF AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING, THE PURSUIT OF ENHANCED FUEL EFFICIENCY AND DIMINISHED EMISSIONS HAS SPURRED GROUNDBREAKING INNOVATIONS. HERE ARE TWO RECENT ONES WORTH KEEPING ON YOUR RADAR

A

ccording to some, the Valeo 48 Volt iBSG (Integrated Belt Starter Generator) is poised to reshape the automotive landscape. This piece delves into the technical intricacies of the iBSG and investigates the escalating significance of 48-volt systems in the automotive industry. Traditionally, vehicles have predominantly relied on a 12-volt electrical system to power various components, from lighting to infotainment systems. However, as the demand for more sophisticated electronics and heightened fuel efficiency has risen, the constraints of a 12-volt system have become increasingly apparent. This is where 48-volt systems come into play. Why the transition to 48 volts? In simple terms, higher voltage systems offer a plethora of advantages, including: • Powering Electrification: With the increasing prevalence of electric powertrains, higher voltage systems are essential for efficiently distributing power to electric motors and other components. • Current Reduction: Higher voltage results in decreased current for the same power output. This reduction in current translates to less heat generated, diminishing the necessity for bulky, expensive wiring and enhancing electrical efficiency. • Improved Start-Stop Systems: Higher voltage

facilitates smoother and quicker engine start-stop functions, crucial for enhancing fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. • Advanced Electrification: 48-volt systems pave the way for mild-hybrid and full-hybrid powertrains, enabling features such as regenerative braking, electric boost, and electriconly driving at lower speeds. • Leading the charge in this voltage revolution is the Valeo 48 Volt iBSG, a compact and potent system that amalgamates the functionalities of both a starter and generator. Its technical prowess lies in its adeptness at efficiently and seamlessly managing the electrical requirements of contemporary vehicles.

that the start-stop system is virtually imperceptible to the driver. This results in improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions. Regenerative Braking: During deceleration, the iBSG functions as a generator, converting kinetic energy into electrical energy and storing it in the vehicle’s battery. This reclaimed energy can then be utilised to assist the engine or power other electrical systems. Power Boost: In scenarios requiring additional power, such as acceleration, the iBSG provides an electric boost to the engine, reducing fuel consumption and enhancing performance. Seamless Integration: The Valeo iBSG is meticulously designed to work in harmony with the vehicle’s existing powertrain, rendering it a costeffective and efficient solution for automakers.

KEY FEATURES OF THE VALEO 48-VOLT IBSG Belt-Driven Design: The iBSG is seamlessly integrated into the engine’s accessory belt drive system, allowing it to deliver power on demand and recover energy during braking or deceleration. Instantaneous Start-Stop: The iBSG can restart the engine in milliseconds, ensuring

Mount Shop’s director, Hemi Toia, is confident that customers will benefit from having access to these additional quality brands,

which perfectly complement the company’s existing product lines. For Mount Shop, quality products, expert knowledge, good service, and the latest ranges are the core principles on which the company was founded, and all of these brands fit perfectly with those principles. Says Hemi, “Our guys at the front counter are trusted by our customers and they have a welldeserved reputation, as does Mount Shop. We’re excited to have these quality brands on board and — with what we already have available — having Koni, KYB, King Springs, H&R Springs, Transteering Steering & Suspension Parts, and Super Pro polyurethane bushes all adds up to Mount Shop having the complete under-car product range.” The addition of these premium product names means that Mount Shop will be able to offer a wider range of quality products to an expanded customer base. “Classic cars, off-roaders, heavier-duty, specialty, and older vehicles that make up the national fleet, they all require suspension parts which we will be able to supply thanks to an increased catalogue,” enthuses Hemi. “Like most of my staff, I’m a car guy and passionate about the industry, and to have these brands in-house is a new step for the company.” The official handover is set to take place on 31 January, 2024. Please contact Hemi directly if you have any queries regarding the transition from George Stock to Mount Shop.

an Howard of Kapiti founded Discount Tools in 2018 because “there was clearly a gap in the market for quality tools at a fair price”. Working as a tech at a busy, well-known local workshop, Howard considered taking the plunge and pursuing his passion. So he went for it. During the initial stage, he remembers having to work two jobs packing orders, creating that hunger to succeed, especially when you and your wife have a young family to support. This business is a team effort. Initially, Discount Tools began importing diagnostics tools, later expanding to general tools and, more recently, workshop equipment. Howard has now outgrown his current warehouse in Paraparaumu. “This is an exciting problem to have,” he says. Being a one-man band, Howard is not hamstrung by corporate processes. He has struck a balance between his 25 years of first-hand knowledge in a workshop and listening to what the small independent workshop operators are telling him about their needs. A great example of this is the recent arrival of a simple, easy-to-operate tyre changer, which has a wheel balancer attached on the reverse side of the tyre changer. This combined one-piece setup saves space and money, which would often be tied up only on one piece of equipment. Now, that’s thinking outside the square. Sales continue to grow nationally, which is not bad, having come from humble beginnings importing a box at a time to now importing a dozen

Pro-Wave advantage PRO-WAVE INVERTERS ARE DESIGNED, ENGINEERED, AND TESTED IN AUSTRALIA TO PROVIDE PERFORMANCE IN THE TOUGHEST CONDITIONS. THE PRO-WAVE RANGE UTILISES PURE SINE WAVE TECHNOLOGY, WHICH MORE CLOSELY REPLICATES THE 240V MAINS POWER FOUND AT HOME

P

ro-Wave pure sine wave inverters have been specifically designed and built to deliver the next level of clean, reliable power for those looking for greater performance over entry-level modified sine wave inverters. Offering exceptional reliability, Pro-Wave is the ideal companion for all adventures, whether for the avid traveller taking their household comforts to remote destinations, or the home handyman in need of good, clean power to run sophisticated power tools when mains power isn’t available.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS Remote Control: Every Pro-Wave inverter comes with a sleek LCD display remote, which allows you to mount the unit discreetly next to the main battery, out of sight. Additionally, this clever remote lets you easily read load power and input voltage while conveniently switching the inverter on and off remotely. Greater Starting Power: Pro-Wave inverters deliver far greater start-up power than equivalent modified sine wave inverters to run more of your favourite appliances effortlessly. The range is engineered to run at 120 per cent surge for 10

minutes and 200 per cent for one second. Fully Isolated Design: Safety is paramount around 240V, especially with inverters, which is why Projecta fully electrically isolates the DC (and therefore battery posts, vehicle chassis, etc.), from the 240V AC circuit. This grants users total peace of mind, which means all they need to think about is what they want to power and where. Superior Noise Filtering: By producing ultraclean power with greatly reduced interference, mirroring that of the power expected from household 240V outlets, the Pro-Wave range prevents any electrical noise/static from being produced when running sensitive appliances.

therefore, they are more costly. However, they are best for use on sensitive electrical appliances due to their ultra-clean power delivery. Watch television without static, listen to an AM radio, play your favourite games on an Xbox, PlayStation or Switch, and run a fluorescent light, all of which may not operate properly on a modified sine wave inverter. For more information visit www.projecta.com. au/pro-wave

WHAT IS PURE SINE WAVE? There are two different types of inverters: modified sine wave and pure sine wave. The difference between the two is how closely the output replicates mains power. The process used to create the power from a pure sine wave inverter is more complex, and

eppler was undertaking the building of a new dealership to house their new car brands GWM, Haval, and Mahindra. These brands have a mixture of ICE (internal combustion engines) and EVs that all must be catered to. The Keppler family had a clear vision of the look and feel of the

workshop that was in keeping with their brand. They required a partner who could work with their builders and subcontractors to ensure the project’s smooth and timely delivery. “The project was a massive undertaking for us,” says Darryl, the after sales manager, “but it was made so easy with the communication from Equipped.” Treadway Equipped invested significant time in the early stages to get a clear picture of the scope and vision that directors Sean and Aaron Keppler had for this project. This allowed Equipped to put together a layout and package of products that matched their budget, achieved the technical capacity required, and fitted perfectly with the colour scheme and look they were after. Throughout the delivery of the project, Equipped had regular meetings with the builders and other contractors to ensure everything came together. “The time spent with the sparky early in the build meant the final installation and commissioning went so much smoother,” says Equipped’s sales director Loren Bill. Once the team had moved into the new space, Equipped completed a training

Giltrap opens in Christchurch

SINCE 1966, GILTRAP GROUP HAS BEEN SYNONYMOUS WITH BRINGING THE WORLD’S MOST DESIRABLE CARS TO NEW ZEALAND; NOW, GILTRAP GROUP IS BRINGING THAT AUTOMOTIVE MAGIC TO THE MAINLAND WITH THE OPENING OF GILTRAP CHRISTCHURCH

T

he all-new facility in Islington is the stuff of dreams for anyone passionate about cars. It boasts a Certified Bentley Service Centre, Polestar Christchurch and the South Island’s most impressive selection of pre-owned luxury vehicles and supercars. The design goal was to give Giltrap Christchurch the same character as the now iconic 119GNR building in Auckland’s Grey Lynn, where Bentley, Aston Martin and Lamborghini have their New Zealand headquarters and the Starship Supercar show was staged. “Our passionate customer base in Canterbury

and across the South Island made this facility a must for Giltrap Group,” says Giltrap Christchurch General Manager Jarrod Clarke, “there is no question that the South Island boasts the world’s best driving roads, so it is fantastic to be able to offer the highest possible level of service and support for our customers in Christchurch… along with those coming to experience the magic of driving the best cars on the best roads.” Proudly 100 per cent New Zealand-owned, Giltrap Group have been staging a growing number of its drive events in the South Island, and the Giltrap

Christchurch site offers the ideal base for activities like Bentley’s recent Extraordinary Journeys. The growing popularity of Polestar in the South Island meant the Swedish electric performance brand was integral to the design of the building. The new Polestar Christchurch Test Drive and Handover Centre offers customers the same Polestar experience that has earned the brand a loyal and passionate following around the world. Polestar Christchurch complements the existing nationwide service network. Polestar Christchurch will officially launch the all-new Polestar 3 performance SUV to the South Island this weekend, along with the full range of award-winning Polestar 2 models. This Saturday, Canterbury’s car fans are invited to experience the Supercars at the South Island’s firstever Café 66 event as part of the official opening of Giltrap Christchurch. A free entry, family-friendly event, Café 66 runs from 9 am-12 Saturday 4 November, at 491 Waterloo Rd, Islington. “This is the best way to celebrate the official opening of Giltrap Christchurch, and after the sell-out success of the Starship Supercar Show, it only made sense to bring some of the magic to Christchurch,” says Clarke. A regular highlight of the Auckland Car scene, Café 66 is best described as the Supercar version of the Cars & Coffee style events held worldwide. For their first Café 66, Giltrap Christchurch is also looking to sprinkle a touch of the recent Starship Supercar Show, which saw $100m worth of exotic machinery on display at Giltrap Group’s Auckland HQ.

G

MSV has celebrated its third anniversary with a significant announcement: Revealing the GMC Yukon — a full-size premium SUV with seating for eight — will be joining the marque showroom portfolio, as well as several developments associated with existing model lines. “GMSV has made a real impression in the local market and, thanks to this success, we’ve been able to make a strong business case for additional models, and this latest arrival is a testament to these achievements,” said Greg Rowe, Director of GMSV. “I’m excited to confirm the new GMC Yukon will be remanufactured here in Melbourne and will be available in Australia and New Zealand.” The announcement coincides with the 8000th remanufactured Chevrolet Silverado emerging from the Premoso facility in Dandenong. GMSV dealerships will offer the highly-equipped GMC Yukon Denali and the first examples of the new model are anticipated to arrive in showrooms in early 2025. Concurrent with the announcement of the new GMC Yukon, GMSV also took the opportunity to update plans relating to other model developments, including Corvette E-Ray, MY24 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 upgrades and MY24 Chevrolet Silverado HD.

makes this the most technologically advanced Corvette ever, and we are pleased to announce that MY24 build of the new model is expected to commence mid-next year,” said Mr Rowe.

MY24 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 UPGRADES Chevrolet Silverado enthusiasts will be pleased to know a new GM performance exhaust will be added to both models in the MY24 1500 range, the ZR2 and LTZ Premium. “The MY24 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 will now be standard with an active performance exhaust system providing customers the flexibility of a ‘standard’ exhaust experience — or dialling up the limiter to hear

that traditional V8 rumble,” said Mr Rowe. In another massive development, the new MY24 ZR2 will receive a swath of added equipment, including rear camera mirror, multi-colour 15” diagonal head-up display, power tilt/telescoping steering column, adaptive cruise control along with a Bose Premium Sound System.

MY24 CHEVROLET SILVERADO HD As announced in September, the new MY24 Chevrolet Silverado HD is scheduled to start the remanufacturing process at Dandenong this month, with the first wave of vehicles anticipated to arrive in showrooms as early as December. More details of all updates, as well as information about the new GMC Yukon, will be available at GMSV: New GM Cars for Sale in Australia & New Zealand gmspecialtyvehicles.com

Air filters for EVs AUSTRALIA’S LEADING FILTRATION COMPANY RYCO HAS ANNOUNCED THE RELEASE OF A NEW RANGE OF RYCO HYBRID VEHICLE BATTERY AIR FILTERS READY FOR THE INCREASE IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES

R

yco’s creativity has continued to spark innovation with its latest release. Always at the forefront of filtration technology, Ryco’s new Hybrid Battery Air Filters are designed to remove dirt and contaminants before they enter the battery air cooling system. Ensuring that only clean and cool air is supplied to the battery system, a high dust holding capacity prevents even the worst of dust levels from infiltrating the cooling system, all while retaining that all-important new vehicle warranty protection. It’s important to note that this new filter is part of a

logbook service, with replacement occurring at approximately every 20,000km. “The entire Ryco Hybrid Battery Filter range is made from a flame-retardant synthetic fibre that traps particles and will reduce dust build-up in the battery air system,” said Alastair Hampton, general manager of engineering and innovation. “Ensuring that a build-up of dust is prevented from entering the battery will mean that the temperature is kept within tolerance by the vehicle’s cooling system and will prevent damage to the battery system by reducing its chances of overheating.” Prolonged exposure to airborne contaminants causes clogging of the battery cell air passages, increasing their internal temperature and reducing charge capacity and traction battery life. This can also be a consequence of not servicing and letting the filters clog up. Using these new filters prevents that from happening more quickly. The new Ryco Hybrid Vehicle Battery Air Filters are designed to safeguard the longevity, efficiency, and reliability of hybrid batteries. With the number of hybrid vehicles on the roads only

Dual Duty ADD THE 1953 DODGE STORM ZEDER Z-250 TO THE LIST OF GREAT CARS THAT WERE NEVER GIVEN A CHANCE

F

or years, car designers across the globe have dipped their toes into the concept of a modular vehicle, that is, a car that uses a universal platform or chassis, on to which different bodies can be swapped. The idea was that a driver could run their van-style work body during the week, for example, and quickly swap over to their convertible sports car body for the weekend. It’s a promising idea that, truthfully, has never really gone anywhere. What’s news to most is that this modular concept, in a way, is actually much older than you might think. This brings us to the 1953 Dodge Storm Zeder

30

Auto Channel Issue #64 December 2023

Z-250, a car with a brilliant core concept that had the potential to be a real game-changer and shake up the industry at the perfect time. That’s not how it worked out though, and the story of this interesting car became one of brilliant automotive design, plenty of nepotism, and a pinch of familial sabotage. The story begins in the early ‘50s with Fred Zeder Junior. While Fred Jnr did have an engineering degree, he wasn’t actually involved in the auto industry at the time, instead working in New York’s advertising scene. While that would have been a big problem for most would-be car designers, that wasn’t going to be an issue for

Fred. That’s because dear old dad, a certain Fred Zeder Senior, was one of the ‘three musketeers’ — the original engineering team that founded the Chrysler Corporation. This meant that Zeder no doubt had plenty of privilege and a whole lot of connections, and indeed he spent his spare time racing his Chrysler

The key concept was that it should be two different cars using one common platform

reshaped into an inarguably beautiful and very European-looking two-seater. Underneath the sultry bodywork is a complete tube-frame chassis and a hodge-podge of Chrysler bits and pieces, including a modified Dodge Hemi V8 sourced from a truck and backed up by a one-off four-speed manual box built by Dana specifically for the project. The motor produced 260hp and 330ft-lb of torque, which was good enough for a seven-second 0-100 and a 14.7-second quartermile with the street body fitted. On completion, the Storm took the top prize at the Turin Auto Show before being shipped back to New York, where Zeder supposedly drove straight to the steps of the Rockefeller Center and parked it up, pulling big crowds and causing such a massive traffic jam that the police got involved and ordered the car be removed. Things were looking very promising for the sports car at that point, and Fred took his baby to Chrysler’s design headquarters for evaluation. Unfortunately, this is where things began to unravel. The villain in this story is actually Zeder’s uncle, Jim Zeder, who was the chief engineer at the time. Jim was famously wary of outside-the-box ideas, and after promising to evaluate the car, instead locked it up in storage for two years during which time the order was given to not even mention the Storm, let alone remove the covers. Because of this familial skulduggery, the beautiful coupe, though ready and raring to go, never got any closer to production, with the

31

official reason being that it would be too expensive to produce in any quantity that would make it profitable. Later in life, Frank remarked that the more likely reason was that his uncle knew that if it succeeded, he’d get no credit for it, and if it failed, he’d take the heat, making it a no-win proposition for him.

Because of familial skulduggery, the beautiful coupe never got any closer to production By the time Zeder got the car back, two years had passed, and so had the moment. Enthusiasts across the country had since got themselves behind the wheels of the latest Corvettes and Thunderbirds from GM and Ford, and Chrysler would be out of the sports car market for decades. In fact, arguably, Chrysler didn’t make another sports car until the early ‘90s, when the Viper appeared. Thankfully, the Storm Z-250 never saw the crusher, and after getting the car back, Zeder actually used it as his daily driver for the next 16 years before eventually donating it to a university. These days, it can be seen on display at the famous Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, sitting among dozens of other failed concepts, brilliant but unfulfilled ideas, and broken automotive dreams.

Hollywood cars in Aotearoa THE SAME TYPE OF SUPRA, SHELBY MUSTANG, CITROËN, AND PORSCHE THAT FEATURED IN FAST & FURIOUS, BULLITT, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, AND JAMES DEAN’S UNFORTUNATE DEMISE ARE ALL COMING UP FOR AUCTION IN AUCKLAND

W

ebb’s Auction House is bringing an assortment of collector cars to market at the beginning of December, including a handful of models similar to those that have appeared in major films and significant events from Hollywood’s history and fascination with all things automotive. A highlight among them is a 1968 Shelby Mustang GT-H, an iconic muscle car of a very similar model to the one that appeared in the American neo-noir action thriller film Bullitt starring Steve McQueen. In it, there is an intense, dramatically executed and award-winning car chase — filmed with McQueen at the wheel, as he refused a stunt double — through the streets of San Francisco, which influenced how car scenes were filmed from then on. The exceptional, muscular 350 GT-H on offer has a distinguished history — i.e. its original New Zealand owner from 1971 until the ‘90s was Diane Landrebe, a renowned motorcycle racer, speed fanatic, and car mechanic from Dunedin. This Shelby was highly optioned and came equipped

with power disc brakes, power-assisted steering, a tachometer and trip odometer, and a factory roll bar and shoulder harness seat belts complete the package. Under the hood is a 302 cubic inch V8 with J Code enhanced heads and large fourbarrel carburettor. The Shelby is expected to fetch somewhere between $190,000 to $220,000. Also in this auction is a car that has amassed a loyal following of Francophiles and film aficionados: a 1986 Citroën 2CV6. In 1981, Roger Moore drove a similar car during an iconic scene in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only. Having just lost his Lotus Esprit to a dramatic explosion and with a troupe of evildoers on the chase, the quintessentially quirky 2CV hardly seemed the best mode of transport for a suave, jet-setting spy. Nonetheless, with its basic charms, rugged soul, and reliability, the car survived a bashing, a couple of complete roll-overs, and two Peugeot 504s before escaping to safety. This later version, to that of 007’s fame, was imported to New Zealand in 1997 and boasts the upgraded and slightly more powerful 600cc engine, which lends the model its ‘Special’ namesake. This car is expected to fetch anywhere from $30,000 to $40,000. For those whose taste leans more toward the Japanese domestic market, there will be a 1994 Toyota Supra Mark IV, the same model meticulously restored and driven (to high-octane excess) by The Fast & Furious (2001) co-protagonist Brian O’Conner. Equipped with the renowned

2JZ inline-6 engine, producing 220bhp in its naturally aspirated form, the fourth-generation Toyota Supra has undeniably earned its place as a modern classic. This particular New Zealand-new example has undergone extensive modifications and maintenance, accompanied by thorough documentation highlighting that only four Supras of this year were delivered to New Zealand. Subsequently, in 2010/11, the vehicle received a substantial power upgrade, boosting its output to approximately 600bhp. This JDM beauty is expected to reach anywhere from $115,000 to $125,000. Also on sale will be a replica of a 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder, a car made infamous because Hollywood star and race driver James Dean met his tragic end while on his ‘Little Bastard’ 550 Spyder, a car many considered to be ’haunted’ because nearly anyone who ever owned parts from it either met tragic ends or suffered severe physical pain caused by their performance. This replica was built by Vintage Motorcars in San Diego, California, which has a renowned reputation for producing some of the highest-quality replica Porsches available. The

most recent restoration included a complete rebuild of the Type 2 VW motor with all-new components and an increased bore to 1850cc. Estimate: $80,000 to $95,000. The vehicles from the Collectors’ Cars, Motorcycles and Automobilia catalogue are on view now until their live auction on 3 December, 2023, at the Due Drop Events Centre in Manukau.
