he Virginia High School League is an alliance of Virginia's public and approved non-boarding non-public high schools that promotes education, leadership, sportsmanship, character and citizenship for students by establishing and maintaining high standards for school activities and competitions.

Major policies and decisions affecting VHSL programs are determined by a 37-member Executive Committee. Direction is provided by group boards and by region and conference councils. Finally, all member principals have oversight at region meetings and at fall and spring membership meetings.

This democratic, decentralized organizational structure provided for maximum local control and assured participation of school leaders as well as the public-at-large.

Scoring and Awards Individual Event Score: The gymnast’s score for one event is her individual event score. It is computed by taking four judges’ scores, eliminating the high and low scores, and then averaging the two middle scores.

All-Around Score: The total of each all around gymnast’s score in each event is her all-around score.

Team Score: The team score is the total of team’s highest four scores in each event.

Awards: Trophies will be presented to the team champion and the runner-up. Awards will be presented to the top eight places in individual competition in each of the four events and the top eight all-arounds. Team medals and trophies will presented at the conclusion of the completion on Friday, and individual medals will be presented at the end of the competition on Saturday.

Year-by-Year Champions Gymnastics Champions Gymnastics was the first "modern era" VHSL sponsored girls sport. From 1969 until 1973, VHSL gymnasts competed for individual titles in Floor Exercise, Balance Beam, Uneven Parallel Bars, Vault, Tumbling (discontinued as an event in 1973), and All-Around events. In 1974, team competition was added, with Midlothian claiming the AAA championship and Varina winning the first of four "unclassified" titles (1974-77). In 2014, two team championships were awarded, while gymnasts from all classes compete for individual titles in an "open" meet.

Lake Braddock High School of Burke has won a VHSL record nine team championships, five in a row from 1995-99. First Colonial's Kara Wright owns the VHSL record for individual titles with 11 including four All-Around titles from 2003-06.

VHSL conducted boys gymnastics championships from 1963-1984.

Mountain Views wins 1st title from staff reports, The Free Lance-Star

One day after leading Mountain View to its first state gymnastics team championship, TaeLyn Canty won the individual vault title Saturday at Lightridge High School in Loudoun County.

Canty earned a 9.85 score on her Yurchenko layout vault Saturday to become the first Stafford County gymnast to win an individual state event since Stafford’s Jennah Chang in 2018. She also tied for sixth in floor exercise (9.55).

On Friday, she received 9.90 scores from all four judges in vaulting, part of a dominant team performance that propelled the Wildcats to the title. Mountain View

Lake Braddock capped a dominant run with its second straight Virginia Class 6 gymnastics championship Friday afternoon at Lightridge High in Aldie.

The Bruins’ total of 151.85 edged runner-up Battlefield’s 148.1 and was the product of a strong and deep roster. The event’s format calls for teams to place five gymnasts in each event, with the lowest score not included in the total. The lowest score Lake Braddock had in any event was 8.975.

Even more impressive is that Lake Braddock won with standout freshman Abby Parrish battling a stomach flu.

“She was determined to compete,” Bruins Coach Mike Cooper said. “I couldn’t hold her down!”

Battlefield didn’t make it easy — especially on the beam; the Bobcats’ Jordan Ignacio posted a perfect 10 in the day’s final event. As the junior’s score was flashed, the

also got a 9.525 score from Avigayvil Green and a 9.200 from Yasmine Hasaan in vaulting for a team score of 37.400 in the event, more than a full point better than any of the other four schools in the final.

They finished the overall team competition with 144.525 points to 141.850 for runner-up Woodgrove. “(Vaulting) has been a real strength for us,” Mountain View coach Josi Brooks said. “We have four girls who can do flips, and typically most teams have two or three at most. So typically, if we hit them, that puts us at least a point ahead of the other teams.”

Canty also posted the night’s best score (9.500) on floor and matched the best individual score of any gymnast (8.975) on the uneven bars. Her balance beam score (9.300) was second only to Green’s 9.325.

Green “had the meet of her life (Friday) night,” Brooks said. “She hit on everything: beam, vault, bars. It was her best meet. I don’t think she gets enough credit because of TaeLyn, but she was absolutely incredible.”

“A team like this comes around only once in a blue moon,” Brooks said. “It was great to get the team and to perform so well at the state level.”

gymnasium erupted into applause and tears began flowing. Ignacio celebrated by posing with a $10 bill signed by the judges.

“Throughout the routine I got really excited as I stuck everything, and I really wasn’t expecting that at all,” Ignacio said.

Making it even sweeter was that her older sister, Emily, is the Bobcats’ coach.

“We had good competition. I mean, we knew Battlefield could be there, and they proved it on beam,” Cooper said.

Leading up to the state team competition, the Bruins placed first in both the Patriot District and Occoquan regional meets. Battlefield won the Cedar Run District and Patriot regional events en route to the state meet.

“Trying to win back-to-back is the hardest thing in the sport to do because you are the defending champion trying to be the winner again and it’s a lot of stress,” Cooper said. “The girls did fantastic.”

Ocean Lakes (140.25) finished third, followed by Oakton (137.98).

Before she steps on the mat for her routines, Lake Braddock’s Madi Bell always turns to one of her teammates and asks, “I’m good, right?”

Between high school gymnastics and her junior Olympic club team, Bell practices roughly 4½ hours per day, so she knows her routines. But that little bit of reassurance before she salutes the judges goes a long way for the sophomore.

On Saturday afternoon, she nailed each of her four routines to clinch the Virginia all-around individual title at Lightridge High in Aldie, posting a

score of 38.925 to beat runner-up Ally Livesay (Mechanicsville, 37.625) and Nyra Foosness (Stafford, 37.600).

“Yesterday I was so happy for my team, and I knew today was the exact same thing,” Bell said a day after the Bruins repeated as Class 6 team champions.

Teammate Abby Parrish also made the podium for the all-around — the freshman tied for fourth place with Grassfield’s Reagan Davis, posting a score of 37.425. Lake Braddock had the top four finishers in the uneven bars, with senior Zoe Brokamp and sophomore Maggie Suson tying for first place at 9.85, putting Bell in third place and Parrish in fourth.

“They had the camaraderie, but then on bars you could see that each of them wanted to do better. So it was cool to see that,” Coach Mike Cooper said.

Not only did Bell improve upon last year’s thirdplace all-around finish, but she also made the podium in each of the four events. Her scores in bars and beam — both 9.825 — were her best of the day, followed by a 9.7 on vault and a 9.575 on the floor. Bell’s favorite event is beam, on which she scored a perfect 10 at the Patriot District tournament.

“Today I was really nervous on beam, but I still told myself to be calm and hit my routine,” Bell said.
