Background and Program Note

Yunnan province in Southwest China is home to twenty-five different officially recognized ethnic minorities, or “nationalities,” each of which has its own language and culture. Since the early 1980s, Professor Zhang Xingrong of the Yunnan Art Institute has traveled throughout Yunnan, making field recordings and transcribing songs of many of those nationalities in their original dialects. YunnanFolkSongs is based on my interpretations of seven of those recordings, from the Yi, Hani, Lisu, and Jingpo nationalities. The dialects in which the songs are sung are not written, but have been passed from generation to generation entirely orally, making literal translations difficult. The translations of each song are accordingly based by and large only on general meanings.

When I first heard the recordings, which I ordered directly from Professor Zhang, my heart skipped a beat. The singing immediately made a deep and profound impact. I was in awe of the singers’ raw voices, representing the uninhibited qualities of people expressing their genuine feelings through their melodies. I was also struck by the fact that most of the songs are harmonically and rhythmically complex, including contrapuntal textures unusual in East Asian music, with as many as eight independent vocal parts.

My process for recomposing these songs has been to preserve their original flavor, meaning, and essential melodic lines, while creating my contemporary reaction to the source materials.

1. WushanMountainSong - The mountain song is one of four major song forms of the Yi people living in the mountains on the north bank of the Hong River, and represents an invitation to sing songs to relax. In my interpretation of one of the traditional mountain songs, the singers are instructed to imagine calling out and communicating between mountaintops.

2. OverturebasedonCourtshipSong – This movement is based on an instrumental tune played by a Hani reed instrument called the qi chu lai wo, which is often played by a male who encourages his lover to resonate the sound with her hands at the lower mouth of the instrument. I was most fascinated by the fact that even though this instrument can play only one note at a time, long skips between the notes of the primary line allow the resultant melody to include two contrapuntal lines. I tried to reflect this in my orchestration and the division of the melody among the entire ensemble.

3. PigHerdingSong – Sung while looking after pigs, singers call out alternately in a coaxing voice, hollering to the pigs, and with various nonsense syllables – la, luo, and shua – for example. This was a fun movement to compose, but at the same time very challenging, as there are two very different melodic lines – one in strict meter and the other very free – that have to work together.

4. LoveSongWhilePlantingtheRiceFields – The source for this movement is a song that would traditionally be sung at night in a hushed manner when young people get together. The Hani live along steep mountain slopes with majestic terraced rice paddies in Southern Yunnan. This song is quite intricate, involving multiple voice parts. I have counted four parts, though other Hani songs have as many as eight parts. The murmuring voices weaving in and out of the surface, as well as the strumming lute accompaniment, are textures that I tried to develop in the orchestration and the setting of the vocal parts.

5. RicePoundingSong - This movement is based on a song traditionally sung while husking rice using a large pestle and mortar: “Getting up very early, it is still dawn; the husked white rice is fragrant.”

6. WeddingLament – A young woman about to leave her family to get married is reluctant to leave her family to marry into some else’s family. Her family members are all unhappy to see her go. According to Professor Zhang Xingrong’s writings, the Hani tribe was originally a matriarchal society but was driven by the male ancestors to become patriarchal. The female ancestors, in return for the transfer of authority, asked for estate compensation but were refused. As a result, the female members feel helpless and express their anguish with vocal cries. The Hani bride traditionally sings this lament to commemorate her female ancestors. The louder she cries, the more blessings she will get from her ancestors, and the happier the marriage will be. The song signals the end of maternal authority and the beginning of paternal authority, especially during the period of arranged marriages, or literally translated as the “trade-of-marriage.”

7. YouthDanceSong – This song originated with the Ahsi or Axi culture, which the Chinese government groups as members of the Yi nationality. A very catchy tune with appealing rhythms, I chose this upbeat tune to end the rich song cycle.

1. Wushan Mountain Song - “Wushan Qiang” - Literally translates into Five Mountain Way/Method of Singing

The words are in the “Yi” tribe-cized subdialect of Yunnan Chinese.

“It is not too early. Mei mei (little sister – note that this doesn’t have to be literally someone’s little sister, a term of endearment, such as I call my good friend a little sister) should sing some songs to relax.”

The singers who are featured in the recording are known for their bright, big voices, resonant and round sounds, which can alternate smoothly between real voice and falsetto. They are known to hold notes for longer than a minute without breathing.

3. Pig Herding Song – “Lai luo ga” (I also have a video of the singer – but only one voice, if you would like.) Sung in the Lisu language.

Lai luo = Swineherd

Ga = Song

Sung while looking after pigs. Many of the syllables portray the calls that the swineherd makes to the animals – different ways of getting the animals to respond through yelling, herding, calling, coaxing. The two vocal lines are distinct – one is free in rhythm, fast and shouting at pigs; the other is steady, more like talking to and coaxing the pigs. The tempo changes and changes in vocal lines reflect these two personalities. Syllables include “dia,” “la,” “luo,” “a dziu,” and “shua.”

The story behind the song – A girl is herding pigs in the mountains, worrying about losing her pigs. She runs to and fro watching the pigs. She sees a boy wearing a bright, white bag at a crossing in the mountains. She starts to sing to invite him over to help out with the pigs.

4. Love Song While Planting the Rice Fields – Sung in the Hani dialect.

Happens in the evening when young people dating sit down outside and sing to each other, among other things......Sung softly.

Female lead – “I live high above, you live half way down the mountain. I really would like to be friends with you, but it is difficult to see each other. We work in different places. I hope you feel the same.”

Male – Sung with almost falsetto, soft voice (Brad could we try different ways of singing your line –both falsetto and non – may have to take it up an octave for the falsetto. However, at the climax, from m. 34 onwards, will be in regular voice)

“I will never forget our meeting today. We have a good talk, we both speak with our hearts. Hope we will never forget each other.”

There are other voices too, which I portrayed in the instrumental lines – “How come we have never met before? What kind of wind carries you here? From now on our hearts are together and we will drink water together. Water is a reflection of our hearts.”

6. Wedding Lament – “Su mi yi’e lue” – Sung in Hani. A young woman about to leave her family to get married is reluctant to marry into someone else’s family. Her friend, younger sister, cousin, and mother are all unhappy to see her go. Five people’s different emotions of sadness are expressed together.

“ A ma” = Oh, mother/ma!

“A ba” = Oh, father/pa!

Mezzo – Bride-to-be: “Mommy, I am not tall, you raised me with so much hardship (to make me be tall) You said I was your darling daughter, then why did you marry me out?”

Baritone – Represents different people –

First phrase to m. 6 – Friend: “Once you leave we won’t hear your laughter” Second phrase: m. 8-9 Little sister “ My big sis is so caring to me. Hold my hands.” m. 13-18 – Mother “Daughter, do not be sad. Don’t cry. Mommy does not want to let you go, but it is the rule.”

m. 32 to end – same as the beginning phrase but bari and mezzo lines are switched.

7. Youth Dance Song – “Ah Si Chin Lan Wu” -

“In the Axi place of Xisan, the rhododendron flowers are fresh, our happiest day is today. The peach flowers have opened, the plum flowers have opened, old and young all sing together. We are happy and begin dancing.”

This is both a song and dance in 5-beat groupings where the instrumentalists also join the dance. In the dance, there are 2 lines facing each other and the dance proceeds much like a line-dance, but in a 5 step dance.

As a side – the part with the Jew’s harp is my own addition to the song, nothing to do with the original.
