Jaguar cars chief designer interprets the forceful, fluid design language of the all new X “What if it had been

‘Lion’, or perhaps ‘Tiger’?” muses Ian Callum, Jaguar’s chief designer. I think about his question for a moment. A lion or a tiger would be too cartoonish.

Too obvious. A jaguar is a much more subtle idea, and a more elegant animal. “Besides, the word sounds like a shape,” Callum continues. “It’s got a certain voluptuousness.

It even looks good: the letter forms work

together.”

The new innovative exterior design and a break from the XJ series mould carried over on all previous generations. It is a longer, wider car that looks much bigger than its predecessor.The front has clear

links with the executive car XF, although with slimmer, sleeker lights and a larger, squarer grille and more aggressive appearance. The rear is the contentious part, like nothing Jaguar has shown before. The upright, swooping taillights, nicknamed ‘cat’s claws’, and black roof panels each side of the rear screen, which aim to hide the XJ’s width, are the most striking aspects.

There is also a standard full-length sunroof, that extends all the way back with just a single body-coloured roof panel that the designer likens to bridges on yachts.

Exterior Design

Through the looking glass A panoramic, heat-reflective glass roof extends to the full width of the car and sweeps as far back as the rear seat area. It filters UV rays and floods the interior with natural light making it airy, enviably spacious and, due to effective tinting, private.

The rear screen appears to wrap seamlessly around the car and creates a floating roofline, emphasising the long, low and wide aspect of XJ and its breath-taking profile.

Adjustable boot lid The electronic boot lid is opened with a single press on the remote key, or by using a switch either inside the car or on the bumper.

There is another switch inside the lid for closing it. In addition, the lid can be set to open to a particular height.

Interior Design

Choice of colors and materials Classic, high quality materials are used to maximum, modern effect throughout XJ and you decide the styling. With a total of 15 interior colour themes or combinations available, you can make a bold statement in colour, or go for something a little more muted. Your preference, your way.

You have a choice of 11 veneers, including wood for a warm and natural look. These laser cut veneer leaves, approximately half a millimetre thick, are precision peeled from a tree trunk.

HID xenon headlights Soothing phosphor blue lights your way inside XJ. Everywhere you look this soft shade reveals aesthetic perfection and practicality; from centre console, door panniers, and door pulls, the cabin is bathed in cool and calming light.

Intelligent steering wheel Switches mounted in the steering wheel are used to control the entertainment system and cruise control. For extra comfort on winter mornings the XJ also offers the option of heating in the steering wheel.
