Half a million children living in poverty

At least 581,000 people are living in poverty in Ireland today of which 164,000 are children. is is according to the latest CSO report; a household survey covering a broad range of issues in relation to income and living conditions. e increasing number of people experiencing deprivation is a clear sign that despite several years of sustained economic growth, many people’s circumstances have not improved at all. Poverty and social exclusion continue to be put on the back burner by a Government that continues to fail to give poverty reduction the priority it requires, and people deserve. e Wage Subsidy Schemes and the Pandemic Unemployment Payment (now closed) safeguarded people from the worst of the economic impact of the pandemic. Yet in the long term the economic and social impact will continue to be felt in many homes as the deprivation gures show with over 690,000 people still struggling to achieve a basic standard of living; with four in 10 households reporting dif culties in making ends meet in 2021.

When di erent household types were analysed almost sixteen per cent of households with one adult and children reported great di culty in making ends meet. Arrears are a particular challenge for households on low incomes with one in ve households not able to make a mortgage or rent payment, and sixteen per cent in arrears with their utility bills in 2021. is is currently exacerbated with the steep increases in the cost of living.

Further cause for concern is the very high poverty rates for those unable to work due to long-standing health problems. is group again have the highest risk of poverty in the State at 39.1%. e CSO gures show that ‘in-work poverty’ — a technical way of saying approximately 93,000 people who have jobs are not paid enough to achieve a basic standard of living — is 4.4%.

In 2021, 164,000 children, the most vulnerable groups in any society, lived in households that were below the poverty line. One in six children (204,710) was living in households experiencing deprivation.

Social welfare payments down from 27 percentage points to 11.6% play a crucial role in reducing poverty without which almost four in every ten of the Irish population would have been living in poverty. But it’s not enough according to Social Justice Ireland who is calling on the Government to increase core social welfare rates by €10 per week in this year’s budget and commit to benchmarking core social welfare rates to 27.5 per cent of average earnings over two years.

Commenting on the gures, Dr Seán Healy, CEO of Social Justice Ireland, said: “ e sheer scale of the numbers of people living in poverty is worrying, particularly when we consider the impact of the Government pandemic income supports in cushioning households from the worst e ects of the pandemic.

“ e Government has again shown that it has no clear, comprehensive strategy to tackle poverty, social exclusion and vulnerability. Today’s numbers clearly show that Government, to date, has failed to commit to leaving nobody behind.” e group recommends a number of policy recommendations including, the government must accept that “persistent poverty” should be used as the primary indicator of poverty measurement and assist the CSO in allocating su cient resources to collect this data. Examine and support viable alternative policy options by carrying out in-depth social impact assessments prior to implementing any policies. ey must support the widespread adoption of the Living Wage so that low paid workers receive an adequate income and can a ord a minimum but decent standard of living.

Introduce a cost of disability allowance to address poverty and social exclusion of people with a disability and recognise the reality of poverty among migrants and adopt policies to assist this group.

If not many families will fall further behind the rest of society in the years ahead.

Put up a bird feeder:

Turn your garden into a home for feathered friends. Putting out a variety of foods leads to a greater diversity. Finches love sun ower hearts. Robins and blackbirds prefer ground feeders (not a great idea if there are cats in your area, though!) and sparrows will be attracted by peanuts.

Detach from work at the end of the day:

It’s so easy to constantly be at work these days. With the internet, we can access o ce email from any location. Make it a priority not to do so. Your leisure time is precious. If you have to turn o your wi to get a bit of peace at the end of the day, do so.

Many people working from home bene t from doing something which breaks their day. For example, going out of the house for a moment in the morning, then coming back in and doing the same in the evening. Subconsciously this helps to switch on and o from work.

Learn something new by watching YouTube:

e number of instructional videos on YouTube is startling. Go for something achievable. Not only will you have fun learning, but you’ll feel great when you accomplish your goal. ere are also plenty of fun educational clips you can watch with your children.

Grind your own co ee beans:

If you’re one of the growing number of people making real co ee at home, this tip makes a big di erence. Coffee goes stale very quickly and the di erence when using freshly ground beans is huge.

Get an analogue alarm clock:

How many of us get stressed at the sight of a clock displaying a time when we feel we should be asleep? It’s harder to read a clockface than a digital display when you’re blearyeyed at 3am. If you struggle to get a good night’s sleep, switching to an analogue alarm can help.

Early to bed, early to rise:

is one doesn’t work so well for night owls. However, if you’re an early bird, getting to bed before midnight makes all the difference! Double the bene t by getting outside before 9am. Morning light helps to synchronise our biological clocks. Brightness in the earlier part of the day also increases alertness and mood. Use your early bird nature to best advantage and leave the house for at least 30 minutes before the ninth hour!

Try a di erent tune:

Make a playlist for a friend with a totally di erent musical taste to you. en get them to do the same in return. You never know, you might discover you love new artists you never heard before!
