Forecasters say next heatwave could arrive within days More hot weather is on its way and we could face a warm, dry summer, forecasters have predicted.

Summer across Europe has kicked off with a record-shattering heatwave that saw temperatures climb to extreme levels in places.

While weather warnings have been lifted and average

temperatures have returned for most, forecasters expect the next heatwave could arrive within a matter of weeks.

Much of Europe ground to a halt last week as June records were broken for three consecutive days, with temperatures exceeding 30C in Ireland and Britain.

Europe has been simmering

under an ‘Omega block’ heat dome, a large ridge of high pressure that has locked itself over the continent. The weather system traps hot Saharan air beneath it like a lid on a pressure cooker.

Heatwaves could continue throughout the summer, experts predict, with long-range forecasts stating that “temper-

atures are likely to be above normal on the whole, with a greater than normal chance of hot conditions developing at times”.

Forecasters say a warming climate and the expected El Niño weather event mean that the chance of a hot summer across Europe is higher than normal, which could increase

the risk of heatwaves and other heat-related impacts.

Weather experts say there will be some respite in the next few days as temperatures fall to around average for the time of year, but they will then start to rise in the second week of July.

David Carroll, Chief Executive of Depaul, notes with sadness the 5,583 children trapped in emergency accommodation as the summer holidays arrive.

The just-released numbers show that as of May 2026, 17,447 people are living through the burden of homelessness, including 11,864 individuals and 5,583 children, accessing local authority-managed short-term emergency accommodation.

“Parents face the worry of how they are going to support these children for the next few months.”

The ‘Catalpa Flag’ was on board the former American whaling ship Catalpa, which was used to help six Fenian prisoners escape from Australia in 1876.

The prisoners were among 62 Irish men transported following the rebellion of 1867.

On April 17, 1876, the men absconded from prison, where a small boat took them to the awaiting Catalpa. Captain George Smith Anthony hoisted the flag and warned that an attack on the Catalpa would be an attack on the US. The prisoners eventually made it to freedom in America.

Kilkenny native Fr John O’Reilly later received the American flag and had it sent back to his family in Kilkenny.

On Friday and Saturday, July 3 and 4, this historically significant flag will be on display at the Kilkenny Archaeological Society HQ in Parliament St, Kilkenny City.

Named: another teen e-biker dies Gardaí are investigating whether a teenage e-scooter rider who died on Monday evening, June 29, may have clipped a kerb or hit a bump before suffering a fatal fall in Carlow town. The boy who died was named locally as Janis Ozols from Carlow town.

The teenager suffered serious injuries shortly after 8.30pm on Carpenters Way in Carlow town and died later in

hospital, while another rider was assessed at the scene and did not require immediate medical treatment.

One line of inquiry is that the e-scooter may have strayed off course after hitting a bump in the road, causing a loss of control and pitching both riders to the ground.

According to the Injuries Resolution Board, e-scooter users are considered vulnerable road users, and fatalities have occurred despite their relatively recent introduction. Up to 10 e-scooter users have lost their lives on Irish roads, highlighting the risks associated with this mode of transport.

One in Four welcomes the introduction of the Civil Liability (Child Sexual Abuse Proceedings Against Unincorporated Bodies of Persons) Bill 2025, which is being debated in the Dáil.

“The Bill will be another step towards enabling survivors of child sexual abuse to pursue redress from religious orders and other unincorporated bodies,” Deirdre Kenny, CEO of One in Four, said.

“Religious orders must not be permitted to place assets beyond the reach of survivors.”

The ritual of Going Up for the Match!

As the GAA championship season intensifies, new research commissioned by roadside hospitality retailer Applegreen and conducted

by Amárach Research has revealed the essential role Ireland’s motorway network plays in modern GAA matchday culture. The study highlights that the journey for Leinster county fans (not including Dublin GAA fans) has become steeped in unbreakable rituals, rigid travel routes and crucial post-match debriefs over a hot meal.

Some interesting findings around the scale of travel culture surrounding the championship season show that almost three-quarters (73%) of Leinster county supporters travel to matches by car. For many, the journey is defined by a strict set of rituals. Chief among them is the company kept, as 63% of Leinster GAA fans rank travelling with the exact same group of friends or family — ‘The Crew’ — as a top matchday tradition.

A ‘pit stop’ on the journey is another staple in Leinster GAA fans’ travels, with more than half (55%) stopping at the same location when travelling to a match. When it comes to breaking up the journey, Leinster fans are the most eager to hold out until after the final whistle, with

34% stopping strictly on the way home.

The research also highlights what elements make a roadside stop successful for fans. When pulling over, the absolute non-negotiable for Leinster supporters is parking (62%, ease of access for cars or supporters’ buses), followed by speed (58%, getting in and out as soon as possible).

Speaking on the research findings, Conor McMahon, Head of Marketing at Applegreen, said: “As any GAA fan knows, championship season isn’t just about the 70 minutes on the pitch. It’s about the entire match-day experience, and this research proves that the journey itself is a massive part of that culture. Shortage of dentists sees 360k children lose out A lack of public dentists has led to some 360,000 appointments in the last five years being denied to children eligible for free dental care.

In the last school year, 31% of children (69,155) who should have been seen by a HSE dentist never received their assessment.

This is down from the

99,000 children not seen in the academic year starting in 2020. However, each year since then, between 60,000 and 70,000 children who were entitled to see a HSE dentist have missed out.

Children in second, fourth and sixth classes and special classes are eligible for public dental treatments with the

HSE. They should be seen three times throughout their time in primary school.

However, figures from the HSE show that in the last five years, pupils in these classes have qualified for more than one million appointments, but 359,981 were missed because the HSE has been struggling to recruit public

dentists.

The HSE has said that in recent years it has experienced “challenges in the recruitment and retention of public dental service teams”.

As a result, the HSE has prioritised the provision of services to children in sixth class while also continuing the assessment of children in

non-target groups, including emergencies.

Elsewhere, the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) is warning consumers to exercise caution when purchasing teeth whitening products following new figures which show that illegal and potentially unsafe products containing high

levels of hydrogen peroxide are entering the Irish market through online sales. Due to potential harmful side effects from hydrogen peroxide, the HPRA advises consumers to consult a dentist before considering teeth whitening, especially if they have existing dental or medical conditions.

Motoring ban for causing death to begin after jail time Junior Transport Minister Seán Canney has backed calls to increase the maximum sentence in cases of dangerous driving causing death.

He has also said he wanted to close a loophole so driving bans for those convicted and imprisoned for dangerous driving causing death could start after their release from jail.

At the moment, people convicted of dangerous driving causing death are disqualified from driving for a period, but this begins from the day of their sentencing. That means much of their driving ban is served by the time their prison sentence is over.

Mr Canney recently told the Oireachtas Transport Committee that he supported the calls for driving bans to begin after a prison sentence was served.

“The consequences of a crime of that nature have to be severe and, if people are in prison, there is no additional pain attached to not being able to drive a car because they cannot drive anyway,” he said.

He said he would seek to raise the maximum sentence for dangerous driving causing death in the next Road Traffic Bill, “which is coming in the next while”.

“All these matters will be looked at under the Road Traffic Bill and appropriate changes will be put into it,” he said.

Currently, the maximum sentence is 10 years, but campaigners have been calling for this to be increased in line with Northern Ireland, where it is 14 years.

Mr Canney said the matter would be dealt with in the next set of changes to road traffic laws.

Last year, the DPP appealed a sentence given to Kieran Fogarty, of Hyde Road, Limerick, who received a six-anda-half-year sentence for dangerous driving causing the death of journalism student Joe Drennan in October 2023. The Court of Appeal increased the sentence by five years, and Fogarty is also disqualified from driving for 20 years, with the ban beginning after his release from prison.

EU move may yet see cash rule as king Sinn Féin MEP for Ireland South Kathleen Funchion has welcomed the adoption of a report by the European Parliament’s Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs.

If approved by the European Parliament, the report would mean the end of ‘No Cash’ signs being used to deny people the right to use cash.

MEP Funchion said this EUlevel action was necessary as countries like Ireland refused to fully implement EU rules on the right to use cash.

“This Parliament backing of the European Commission proposal is a welcome move.

It is bizarre to see Irish MEPs from government parties

welcome this move considering the Irish failure to implement the right to use cash is one of the reasons the EU acted.

“In the last EU term, Sinn Féin, through Chris Mac Manus MEP, highlighted how the Irish Government was failing to fully uphold the right to use cash, despite clear case law and European Central Bank guidance.

“It was relying on a contract law loophole to avoid enforcement. In short, they said reading a ‘No Cash’ sign equalled entering a contract.

This was an appalling get-out clause that we in Sinn Féin consistently called out.”

Govt ‘must respond’ to the duty of care Sinn Féin MEP Kathleen Funchion has said the Government must stop treating care as an afterthought and start meeting its legal and moral obligations to those who depend on support services.

Speaking following a conference on fair pay and conditions for carers, hosted

by The Left in the European Parliament’s Employment and Social Affairs team, MEP Funchion said participants heard a clear message that the care sector is under

immense pressure and requires urgent action.

The conference examined the challenges facing both formal and informal carers, including poor pay, inadequate working conditions, workforce shortages and the growing demand for care services across Europe.

Kathleen Funchion MEP said: “Unfortunately, across Europe, care work remains undervalued and underpaid. The discussions at today’s conference reinforced the vital role carers

play in our society and economy.

“Participants highlighted the urgent need for governments to invest in care services, improve pay and conditions for workers and ensure that those who rely on care can access the supports they are entitled to.

“Care is an essential public service and a fundamental issue of dignity, equality and social justice.”

MEP Funchion also highlighted the ongoing campaign by disability rights

campaigner Cara Darmody and the growing concern over failures to provide timely Assessments of Need for children with disabilities: “In Ireland, children with disabilities are legally entitled to an Assessment of Need within six months. Yet more than 22,000 children are waiting for assessments, with the overwhelming majority left waiting beyond the statutory timeframe. The Government is breaking the law and children and families are paying the price.”

What ails publican and punter alike?

Many of the 3,500 publicans represented by the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI) can arguably identify with the horse who walks into a pub and the barman says: “Why the long face?”

Understandably so, as their federation tells an Oireachtas Joint Committee that rising costs are contributing to job losses and threatening the viability of many rural pubs.

The VFI’s new survey shows that 22 per cent of pubs reported a decrease in staffing in the past 12 months, citing ongoing cost pressures as the primary reason.

Chief Executive Pat Crotty says the figures reflect the growing strain on businesses attempting to absorb sustained increases in costs. For many smaller and rural pubs, he says the cost has become completely unsustainable and poses an existential threat to future viability.

According to the VFI survey,

64 per cent of publicans say rising business costs are having an unsustainable impact on them, while four in 10 report trading conditions are worse than 12 months ago.

Four in 10 lack confidence in the future sustainability of their business.

The committee also heard that more than 2,200 pubs have closed across Ireland since 2005, representing a decline of a quarter of licensed pubs. The average rate of closure has jumped in recent years to 128 pubs a year. Since 2005, there have been 14 closures in Co. Meath.

As part of its Budget 2027 submission, the VFI is calling on the Government to introduce a new On-Trade Sustainability Scheme aimed at protecting smaller and rural pubs.

The proposed measure would operate through a targeted tax credit linked to verified purchases of draught products, with support capped at

€20,000 for each premises.

We Irish have always had a special relationship with the pub and drink, though that is inevitably changing. The pub contributes to social wellbeing and connectedness, and in many rural communities it is one of the last, if not the last, remaining indoor public gathering places.

The place of the pub in society has already changed dramatically over the last decades, thanks to drinkdriving laws, the availability of alcohol in supermarkets, the smoking ban, the growth of other options like coffee shops and a growing awareness of alcohol-related health issues.

Where I lay my head, there are now more coffee shops than pubs.

On a pint selling for €6 to €7.50, a publican makes a profit of 20 to 30 per cent but, finances aside, for many there has been that rethink related to health in an era focused on

such and its attendant issues.

Strangely, one of the most contentious issues in the vast literature about alcohol consumption has been the consistent finding that those who don’t drink tend to die sooner than those who do, according to the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.

Moderate drinking, defined

“Four in 10 lack confidence in the future ...

as one to three drinks (units) a day, is associated with the lowest mortality rates in almost all studies. Moderate imbibing is thought to improve overall health and, importantly, sociability because people who are isolated don’t have as many nearby who can notice potential health issues. In rural Ireland, for many, the pub is the only home from home.

The growing popularity of non-alcoholic beer and wine globally is one of the fastestgrowing beverage categories, as competition hots up among brewers seeking out more complex, more challenging options.

Meantime, an Alcohol Action Ireland (AAI) study shows a huge increase in alcohol sales from supermarkets and off-licences year on year.

More not-so-good news just in: Irish guidelines on the “low-risk” limit of alcohol a

person can drink in a week may need to be changed, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) says in a just-published report. It is not only people who drink heavily or who are dependent on alcohol that are harmed by it – how alcohol is consumed also matters. People who drink the same amount each week may have different risks depending on whether they spread the drinking across the week or drink a lot in short amounts of time.

The guidelines may need to be reconsidered based on the latest research, according to the HIQA review. Current guidelines, set in 2015, for low-risk drinking recommend fewer than 11 drinks a week for women and 17 for men, although today there is no strong basis for the different thresholds for men and women.

After all that sobering news, I need a drink... maybe two.

Chambers: 'Use fiscal strength to help strong growth' Chambers Ireland, the nationwide voice of business, in launching its Pre-Budget Submission 2027 ahead of its appearance before the Oireachtas Budgetary Oversight Committee, is calling on the Government to use Ireland’s fiscal strength to deliver urgently needed capacity across housing, infrastructure, skills and energy.

The organisation warns

that, while Ireland enters the Budget cycle from a position of strong public finances, the actual experience of businesses tells a different story, with rising costs, infrastructure gaps and slow delivery now directly undermining growth.

Set against Ireland’s forthcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Chambers Ireland

says that competitiveness, resilience and delivery must define both Ireland’s domestic and European economic leadership.

Chief Executive Ian Talbot said that Budget 2027 would be judged not by announcements, but by outcomes: “Budget 2027 must give businesses confidence that the State can match its ambition with action. Firms across the

country are ready to invest, grow and create jobs, but they need a stronger operating environment. This means faster infrastructure delivery and clearer signals that competitiveness is being treated as a national priority.”

Chambers Ireland, which represents more than 9,000 businesses nationwide, warns that the cost of doing business is now a direct threat to

Cork hospital 'guilty' of bad management, says minister Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill has accused the country's largest HSE-run hospital of failing to manage Cork University Hospital (CUH) by putting patients on trolleys while beds lie empty.

The minister said one in four beds in the hospital were empty one Friday afternoon. She is now threatening to slow down funding for more beds until they "manage the resources they have more effectively".

The minister's latest accusation sparked an "expletiveridden exchange" between Tánaiste Simon Harris and a Fianna Fáil TD. The minister has criticised CUH twice within a week.

The hospital in Taoiseach Micheál Martin's constituency is one of the busiest in the country and by far the largest outside Dublin.

The latest row is a symptom of the drive to get hospitals implementing rosters seven days a week, in line with the new consultants' contract.

Internal documents seen by the Irish Independent show CUH trolley numbers being highlighted prominently.

The hospital has the secondworst trolley problem in the country, behind University Hospital Limerick.

The Department of Health's breakdown of patients on trolleys showed 33 patients on trolleys across CUH on one morning last week. There were 22 patients on trolleys in the emergency department, which was more than in the whole of Dublin and the south-east region.

The Health Minister claims CUH does not have a short-

age of beds and wanted to "push back" on the narrative.

"I notice there were people on trolleys in CUH in recent days while there were vacant beds in Mallow. We have made a very significant investment to increase that from 37 beds to 96 beds, yet there were still vacant beds in Mallow while there were people on trolleys in CUH," Ms Carroll MacNeill said.

Mallow General Hospital is part of the CUH group and Department of Health sources say there is a lack of co-ordination.

"Mallow has new beds but CUH aren't sending patients there when it is clinically appropriate, which would put CUH under less pressure," a source said.

In the Dáil, Fianna Fáil TD James O'Connor was asking the Health Minister for an update on a new community nursing unit in Cork.

"The deputy will forgive me if I am not racing to advance additional infrastructure in the south-west until they make sure they manage the resources they have more effectively," the minister replied.

Ms Carroll MacNeill's answer resulted in Mr O'Connor and Mr Harris being involved in what was described by an observer as an "expletive-laden exchange" just outside the Dáil chamber.

"It happened on the staircase under the Dáil clock.

O'Connor f**ked Harris out of it. He felt she used his question on a local HSE development to score points against CUH," a Coalition source said.

Ireland’s enterprise base, particularly for indigenous SMEs. Rising energy, labour, regulatory and operating costs are constraining investment and expansion.

Energy costs are identified as a key pressure, with businesses facing both high prices and uncertainty, while delays in delivering clean energy infrastructure are compounding the problem. The organ-

isation calls for Budget 2027 to reduce avoidable cost burdens and provide greater assurance for firms planning for growth.

The submission also highlights the need to deploy existing resources more effectively, including the National Training Fund, where over €1.8 billion remains unutilised despite acute skills shortages across the economy.

EirGrid, the operator and developer of Ireland’s electricity grid and official Timing Partner of the GAA and Camogie Championships, has named Laura Mooney of Slieverue GAA [pictured] as the Leinster runner-up of its GAA Community Heroes Campaign.

Now in its second year, the campaign recognises the role GAA volunteers play in enriching and sustaining communities

around the country. It also reflects EirGrid’s broader commitment and emphasis on engaging with local communities.

Over the course of four weeks, EirGrid received almost 80 entries nominating Community Heroes.

Laura embodies the spirit of community and volunteerism that the award seeks to recognise.

registered across the county in 2025. For every 100,000 Dublin residents, 3,637 new cars were registered during the year. Petrol was the top engine type with 14,309 registrations, but Dublin is rapidly embracing electric vehicles, with 11,148 pure electric cars registered in 2025.

Cork remains Ireland's second busiest county for new car registrations, with 14,285 new cars registered in 2025, which works out at 2,445 new cars for every 100,000 people. Petrol was the most popular engine

choice at 3,661 registrations, followed by pure electric at 2,310. Kildare takes third place nationally with 5,783 new cars registered.

In total, 1,432 pure electric vehicles were registered in Kildare, making up almost 25% of all new cars sold and giving it the second-highest pure EV share.

Carlow ranks fourth despite being one of Ireland's smallest counties by population, with 2,201 new car registrations for every 100,000 residents. A total of 1,364 new cars were registered in

Carlow in 2025, with petrol the most popular engine type at 343 registrations.

Waterford rounds out the top five with 2,681 new cars registered in 2025, equivalent to 2,105 new cars for every 100,000 residents. Petrol was the most popular engine choice at 768 registrations, but Waterford also showed a strong appetite for electric vehicles, with 478 pure EVs registered.

Louth (2,074 per 100,000 residents), Clare (2,007) and Kilkenny (1,935) take sixth, seventh and eighth place.

How Burnham faces a Herculean task If Andy Burnham [pictured] wore underpants over his trousers and donned a cape, he could hardly seem more like a superhero in the making… for now. The British PM-to-be has charisma, good looks and an optimistic, easy-going way with him. He even wears heavy horn-rimmed glasses like Christopher Reeve’s alter ego in Superman.

The Liverpudlian won his spurs (not to be confused with his support for Everton) as Mayor of Greater Manchester for the last nine years. His popularity earned him the title King of the North and 55% of the vote in the Makerfield by-election.

He is popular with Labour Party members and MPs, enough to make him the envy of leaders like Martin and Harris at home and Keir Starmer, who resigned as PM on the day Burnham returned as an MP to Westminster and where he previ-

ously served in three roles in Cabinet.

The superheroes of legend, from Odysseus to Cú Chulainn, follow a three-phase trajectory. First is to take up the challenge of a near-impossible mission. Second, to undertake a perilous voyage while achieving superhuman tasks and last, to bask in ad-

miration for their feats.

Will Burnham’s return to Westminster to oust Starmer be, as he put it, a ‘turning point’ in British politics, as he takes on the Herculean task of getting Britain out of the doldrums, a task which has defeated seven prime ministers in the last 10 years?

Hercules had to achieve 12 tasks, among them cleaning the Augean Stables, where he cleverly diverted two rivers to wash away the accumulation of dung. Burnham will need diversionary tactics to wash away the economic constraint, political pushback and overseas crises which have stalled the implementation of Labour’s 2024 ‘Change’ manifesto following the party’s resounding victory. He may have the ability to bring others with him but, like Jason, he still has to choose stalwart Argonauts for his Cabinet and declare his plan for action.

He has already been cast

as the dragon slayer of Nigel Farage, whose Reform Party has been breathing fire on Labour support. His track record in turning around Manchester’s economic fortunes to become the fastest growing region in the UK is encouraging, together with the success of the Bees Projects (named for Manchester’s symbol, the worker bee), among them an integrated low-fare transport system.

Decentralisation, with a move away from Londoncentric power and giving more autonomy to local authorities and regions, is one of Burnham’s stated aims. It’s one which might, given a more federal treatment of Northern Ireland, help pave the way towards a United Ireland. Strong Irish connections in the north of England, especially in Burnham’s native Liverpool, and his own family links to Co. Louth, might be a posi-

tive influence on Burnham’s already stated interest in Irish economic affairs.

His shopping list of tasks is not dissimilar to those facing the Government here.

There’s the need to upgrade Britain’s crumbling infrastructure, an urgent need for more housing, reform of the health service, accelerated measures for green energy and to tackle climate change. But the difficulty is where to find the money (a problem we do not share) without either pushing the country further into debt or alienating the public, already frustrated with the costof-living crisis, with either taxes or cuts to services.

Total public sector net debt is now approaching £2.9 trillion, nearly 94% to 100% of GDP, levels not seen since the 1960s, while interest payments on national debt have reached a record £10.3 billion, driven by inflation and global market factors.

Other known factors about Burnham’s policy preferences are the introduction of proportional representation to replace the current first-past-the-post electoral system, the nationalisation of some services and improving social care. He favours closer ties with Europe and has talked of the reversal of Brexit within his lifetime and one of his foremost aims is to make the country more equal.

Perhaps Britons, sick of political turmoil, may be more willing to back Burnham than his predecessors. He is determined to lead, having previously mounted challenges for the leadership of the party in 2010 and 2015.

I like to think — given vision, courage, ability to inspire followers plus good advisers — it will be third time lucky for him. Remember, the Caped Crusader inspired a further three films, including Batman Forever.

Minister Throws Health and Safety of Slieverue Pupils ‘Out the Window’ – Newsome Drennan Sinn Féin TD for Carlow– Kilkenny, Natasha Newsome Drennan, has sharply criticised the Minister for Education after the Department confirmed it will proceed with planned cuts to teaching staff at Slieverue National School, a decision the Deputy says endangers both educational standards and child safety.

Deputy Newsome Drennan raised the issue with the Minister after being approached by concerned parents and staff. The staffing cut will see the pupil–teacher ratio surge from around 23:1 to 34:1, placing immense strain on remaining teachers and drastically reducing the individual time each child can receive.

Deputy Newsome Drennan said; “This is simply unacceptable.

“The school has lost a valued staff member, and

now both the wellbeing of teachers and the quality of education for our children will suffer. But there is an even more alarming concern, these classrooms were never designed to hold such large numbers. Packing more children into those spaces poses a clear firesafety risk.”

Despite raising these concerns directly with the Minister, Deputy Newsome

Drennan said the Minister refused even to acknowledge the safety issue.

“I requested a 12-month exemption for the school, given that enrolment numbers are projected to increase the following term, which would automatically entitle the school to reclaim that staff post. The Minister’s reply was blunt: the Department’s decision is final. No flexibility, no common sense, and no regard for the health and safety of these children.”

The TD added: “Does the Minister really believe 34 children per teacher is acceptable? It flies in the face of every promise made

by Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.

If this Government is serious about supporting families and small schools, it must reverse this reckless cut immediately.

Deputy Newsome Drennan concluded by urging the local community to make their voices heard: “Contact your local elected representatives and tell them that what their Government colleagues have forced on Slieverue is wrong, and it must be resisted.”

Will the heat burn us out?

New research shows that Ireland could reach peak heatwave temperatures of up to 45C (113F) in the next 30 years.

Prolonged periods of heat above 40C would also bring far-reaching impacts on daily life including water supply, food production and health.

In the 50 years since the often-recalled recordbreaking heatwave of 1976, scientists say that the influence of human-induced climate change means that, should similar weather patterns occur again, we could expect our weather to be much hotter.

According to Ed Hawkins, Professor of Climate Science at the University of Reading, even peak temperatures in 2026 would be 3–4C higher in some locations compared with those in 1976.

Warming has been happening at a rate of approximately 0.25C per decade since 1976. Not only would this mean a more widespread area experiencing a prolonged spell of temperatures above 30C, but a large part of Ireland and the UK would see highs of 34–38C. According to Hawkins, such heatwaves will also become more common in the years ahead and “what felt like a freak event to grandparents in 1976 will become a new normal for their grandchildren”.

Climate projections show

an even more pronounced rise in the potential heat we could experience over the coming decades, levels which would have a profound effect on daily life.

A future forecast, using climate models, for a heatwave in just 30 years’ time shows that parts of southwest Scotland could peak at 38C, with parts of south-east Ireland reaching up to 45C – temperatures unimaginable in 1976.

The average July daytime maximum temperature in Dubai is 41C, but the same climate models produce a forecast of “nine consecutive days which reach over 40C somewhere in the British Isles,” says Professor Stephen Belcher, Chief Scientist at the UK Met Office.

The drought experienced in 1976 remains one of the most severe to have hit Ireland and the UK. New research shows that rainfall would be “20% lower in parts of the country” and, if the 1976 heatwave occurred today, existing water supply deficits would increase by 10%.

More frequent and more intense heatwaves over the coming decades will cause “multiple harvest failures in the UK and around the world,” says Paul Behrens, British Academy Global Professor from the University of Oxford, and “families will struggle to put food on the table”.

While the summer of 1976 remains a standout period in our climate history, some aspects of it have already been eclipsed.

There have been five summers since that have been hotter in terms of average mean (day and night combined) temperature, and the highest temperature of 35.9C that summer has been exceeded on six occasions in the last decade alone.

The warmer world in which we now live means the intensity and frequency of future heatwaves will force us to change our daily lives.

Daily routines will need to be adapted, work hours shifted, summer sporting events moved to cooler seasons and buildings and infrastructure made more resilient.

Mike Tipton, Professor of Human and Applied Physiology at the University of Portsmouth, suggests that “keeping hospitals, workplaces and schools cool will become as necessary as keeping them warm today”.

One of Ireland’s leading climate scientists has warned we should all be “petrified” of the future heatwaves that could be driven by climate change.

Professor Peter Thorne, director of the Irish Climate Analysis and Research Units group at Maynooth University and chairman of the Climate Change Advisory Council, said we should be

“panicking” now as conditions could ultimately become “unsurvivable”.

A new study published by World Weather Attribution climate scientists shows how the temperatures reached today would have been impossible 50 years ago.

An analysis of the current heatwave under a weather system modelled in 1976, today and forecasting to 2056, shows that heatwaves are on track to reach 38C in Ireland and 45C in the UK. The report found that had a

similar heatwave happened in June 1976, temperatures would have been 3.5 degrees cooler.

Europe’s hottest daily temperatures are now increasing three times faster than the global average, while night-time temperatures are rising at twice the global rate.

The study found that 45pc of 854 cities across 30 European countries – including Dublin, Waterford, Galway, Belfast and Derry – have already broken, or will soon

THAT SUMMER SCORCHER OF ’76 Scorched into the minds of a nation, the heatwave of 1976 is still recognised as one of our most iconic weather events.

Images of dried river beds, near-empty reservoirs and queues of people waiting their turn to collect water from standpipes accompany memories of relentless sunshine and heat.

The summer stood out not just for how high temperatures got, but also for how long the heat lasted.

The country experienced two distinct peaks in heat: one that straddled the end of June and early July, with another through the middle part of August.

There were an incredible 15 consecutive days, from June 23 to July 7, where somewhere recorded a temperature of 32.2C (90F) or higher.

What made the heatwave even more impactful was that it coincided with a 16-month-long drought. Very little rain had fallen since May 1975, meaning water resources were already seriously depleted and the ground devoid of moisture even before the heat ramped up.

“It will get worse and rapidly worse until we stop emitting greenhouse gases.

“If people are thinking this won’t happen for another 50 years, they are in for a rude awakening. Quite frankly, if you are not petrified at this point you are not paying attention.”

“The other perversity of all this is every climate action we take to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels reduces our economic vulnerability to the actions of rogue states and third parties.

“Our ability to control our own energy production and consumption keeps money in the economy. We are throwing billions out the door every day,” he said.

Online shopping now packaged with extra tax Irish shoppers ordering from sites such as Temu, Shein and many UK retailers are starting to feel the impact of new EU customs rules introducing a €3 charge on many low-value imports from outside the bloc.

It marks the end of a system that allowed millions of small parcels to arrive with little or no customs intervention, and it will inevitably change the way people shop online.

For years, goods valued below €150 benefited from the ‘de minimis’ exemption.

In simple terms, low-value imports avoided customs duty because collecting small amounts wasn’t worth the effort. That exemption is now being phased out as part of a wider overhaul of the EU’s customs system.

Last year alone, almost six billion low-value parcels entered the European Union, an amazing figure that reflects the huge growth of direct-toconsumer online shopping, particularly from Chinese websites.

European retailers have long argued the old setup was unfair. Businesses based within the EU collect VAT, comply with product safety rules and face routine customs checks. Meanwhile,

overseas platforms have been able to send vast volumes of inexpensive goods directly to customers with far fewer hurdles. EU officials argue the changes are designed to level the playing field, while also

taking advantage of customs systems that can now process small imports far more efficiently.

For shoppers, the practical question is simple: what will it cost? The charge is €3 per item rather than per parcel. That means a parcel of low-cost items can quickly become less of a bargain once the extra charges are added on. Many larger platforms are expected to collect the fee at checkout, so customers will pay upfront without thinking twice about it.

Where that doesn’t happen, parcels may be held until payment is made. Customers will be contacted by the delivery company and given a certain time to pay the charge before the item is returned.

That’s where things start to get messy. If An Post has to collect the charge after arrival, an additional administration fee will be applied on top of customs charges plus VAT. So what looked like a bargain online can end up costing you

far more by the time it reaches your doorstep.

Returns will also become more expensive. While retailers may refund the purchase price, customs charges, handling fees and, in some cases, VAT may not be returned.

That matters most for clothing, where ordering multiple sizes and sending back what doesn’t fit has become routine for many shoppers.

But goods shipped from Northern Ireland are expected to remain outside the scope of the charge under the Windsor Framework. Likewise, many major retailers already hold stock in EU warehouses.

In those cases, goods have already cleared customs in bulk, so the additional charge won’t apply.

An Post is also warning customers to stay alert. Whenever new charges appear, scams are never far behind. Fake texts and emails demanding customs payments are likely to increase, and shoppers should be wary of any

message asking them to click a link about a held parcel.

Legitimate requests will come only through official customs payment channels.

The changes aren’t aimed solely at consumers. They’re designed to give European retailers a more level footing against overseas platforms that have reshaped online shopping over the past decade. Some UK retailers have already raised concerns about added costs and complexity, while smaller businesses may decide the Irish market simply isn’t worth the hassle.

For consumers, shopping from outside the EU is becoming slightly more expensive and less convenient.

Cheap online shopping will not disappear, but the good times of overseas bargains being effortless are ending.

John McGuinness TD welcomes major boost to Carer's Allowance supports for families in Carlow and Kilkenny Carlow-Kilkenny TD and Leas Ceann Comhairle John McGuinness has warmly welcomed the introduction of the largest ever increase to the income disregards for the Carer's Allowance means test, describing the changes as a significant recognition of the invaluable role played by family carers across Carlow and Kilkenny.

The changes, introduced today by the Minister for Social Protection, Dara Calleary TD, substantially increase the weekly income disregards rising from €625 to €1,000 for a single carer and for a couple caring there will be an increase from €1250 to €2,000. In addition, the income limit for Carer’s Benefit will increase from €625 to €1,000. As a result, virtually every person currently receiving Carer's Allowance will now receive the maximum rate of payment, while thousands more carers who previously did not qualify will now be able to access the scheme.

Welcoming the announcement, Deputy McGuinness said: "Family carers make extraordinary sacrifices every day to care for loved ones in their own homes, often putting their own careers and personal lives on hold. This announcement is a very significant acknowledgement of the enormous contribution they make to families, communities and to our health service."

Deputy McGuinness said the measures will have a direct impact across his constituency.

"I am particularly pleased that 47 carers in County Carlow and 46 carers in County Kilkenny will receive an increase in their Carer's Allowance from today. Every additional euro will make a real difference to families who already carry tremendous responsibilities."

He said the increased income thresholds represent one of the most significant reforms to the scheme in decades.

"The new disregards mean that a single carer can now earn up to €50,000 through part-time work while retaining their full Carer's Allowance. Likewise, a couple with an income of approximately €110,000 can continue to receive the full payment. This is a major step towards ensuring carers are not penalised for remaining in employment while continuing to provide essential care."

Deputy McGuinness also welcomed the Government's commitment to continue increasing supports for carers and to progressively phase out the means test for Carer's Allowance.

"In recent years we have seen substantial improvements for carers, including increases in weekly payments, the Carer's Support Grant, Fuel Allowance eligibility, online applications through MyWelfare and the extension of Carer's Benefit to self-employed people. Today's announcement builds on that progress and sends a clear message that carers are valued and supported."

He concluded by thanking carers throughout Carlow and Kilkenny for their dedication.

"Behind every statistic is a family making enormous sacrifices to care for a loved one.

Their compassion saves the State millions of euro each year, but more importantly it allows people to remain in the comfort and dignity of their own homes. They deserve our continued support and recognition, and I warmly welcome today's announcement as another important milestone in delivering that support."

The motion was seconded by Cllr Joe Sheridan, who said that in seconding the motion, he was certain that Joe Malone would put his own stamp of sincerity to the role, on which the people of Kilkenny will be proud of.

First elected Joe Malone entered local politics in 2009 when he was elected to Kilkenny Borough council and later to the County Council in 2014.

He was Mayor of the city on two occasions, a privilege, he says, he will never take for granted.

Outlining his plans as new Chairman, Joe explained that his duties will be vast but he will concentrate in as much as possible on volunteering in Kilkenny. “I want to celebrate the wonderful work that many volunteers carry out”, said Joe. He gave examples with such groups as U,N Vets’, Meals on Wheels, Newpark Close FRC, Teac Tom. These, and other groups give so much said the newly elected chair, and we must recognise the enormous contribution they make.

Joe said that his plan for 2026/27 will include passing a fair budget, delivering social and affordable housing and securing further investment in the city and county.

“While every county is struggling in different ways, Kilkenny is no different, remarked Joe. “ But as a county we have got so much going for us, and I will point to the ongoing work at the Abbey Quarter as a major highlight for our city, said the former army man. Joe went on to say that the ‘Quarter’ provides a once in a generation chance to provide a vibrant, intergenerational community space.

Cllr Malone paid special mention to the new Mayfair library describing it as an absolute gem in our city.

belief about tackling the issue of drug abuse and I want to use my time in this office to be a voice for victims of drugs and indeed the users themselves”, said Joe. Mr Malone went on to say that not a day goes by when he doesn’t hear from a family afflicted by this disease. He described the abuse of drugs in the city and county as an epidemic and cancer in our society. “ I speak every single day with families who have been devastated by drug abuse in one way or another , including threats, intimidation and fear” he said.

Before the conclusion of proceedings, Chief executive of Kilkenny County Council Lar Power congratulated Cllr Malone on his election and said he looked forward to working with him. Mr Power also thanked Cllr Mary Hilda Cavangh on her year in office.

Happy birthday, America, ‘land of the free’!!

July, 2026. Time to wish America a happy 250th birthday. I’d be happier wishing the US a happy birthday if ‘you-know-who’ wasn’t in situ behaving like a trumped (pun definitely intended) up emperor. And Donald should remember Julius Caesar who considered himself the first Roman Emperor and was subsequently stabbed to death (on the Ides of March) in the Roman Senate.

Not suggesting that knives might be drawn in the American Senate (God forbid) but perhaps some disgruntled Texan Republican might pull an old Colt 45 from his trousers pocket and….and who knows?

Election of new Cathaoirleach and Leas Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council On Friday last, 26 June, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Kilkenny County Council took place in the Council Chamber at County Hall, John Street, Kilkenny.

During the meeting, elections were held for the positions of Cathaoirleach and Leas-Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, as well as Cathaoirleach and Leas-Cathaoirleach of the Castlecomer Municipal District.

Choices Shape Your Future

A nation where women have lost everything Where in the world are women banned from public places and denied basic rights like going to the playground with their children? Answer: Afghanistan!

Some time ago, Brian Redmond invited me to speak on KCLR Radio on any topic that interested me. I could have chosen many things, but I had been deeply shocked reading about women in Afghanistan and how they are being systematically erased from public life.

The Taliban impose the most severe institutionalised discrimination imaginable against all females. They have passed laws to combat “immoral behaviour and to promote virtue”. These far-reaching laws cover every aspect of women’s lives: harsh restrictions on education, dress code, public outings, healthcare, reproduction, marriage and more.

Girls are banned from secondary education or university and are allowed only to go to primary school.

Professional training is impossible and marriage is forced upon them.

Child marriage is legal in Afghanistan. There is no minimum age restriction.

Girls as young as 8 can be forcibly married. The law says that children married to abusive husbands can go to court at puberty; however, there is no legal age for puberty. I read of a 15-yearold with two children.

A law passed in 2026 allows husbands to beat their wives.

Girls and women can only go to court if a bone is broken or they have open wounds.

The penalty for the abuser is 15 days in prison, then he is back home. If a woman visits her family without her husband’s permission, both she and her family can be jailed for up to three months.

Women have no access to social media. Possessing

computers or phones would lead to jail. Many women are in prison for “moral crimes”, e.g. contravention of dress code, falling in love, speaking out or trying to protest. All protests are quickly quelled, often with fire hoses; protesters are rounded up and often simply disappear.

Women’s access to healthcare is severely restricted, including dentistry, midwifery services and contraception. Even women with as many as ten children are denied contraception, even if another pregnancy could be life-threatening. With very few female medical professionals remaining and without access to training, their numbers are falling.

Many women are reluctant to be examined by men and, in many cases, men are not permitted to examine women. It is a women’s healthcare crisis.

In terms of dress, women

and girls are forced to wear burqas made of thick material, making it very hot and difficult to breathe. The only visible part of the body is a woman’s eyes; she is not allowed to look at a man she is not either married to or a blood relative. Not a stray hair is tolerated.

Women are barred from gyms and sports. Female athletes who escaped live in exile. Since July 2023, beauty salons have all closed, removing one of the few spaces where women socialised, cared for themselves or earned a living. Now they stay indoors.

Women are forbidden to speak outside their houses or in public because female voices are considered intimate. Singing, reading aloud or reciting poetry in public is an offence.

Music is seen as immoral, a cause of moral corruption.

Performing, broadcasting or listening to music is

criminalised. Taliban forces routinely seize musical instruments from homes or venues, e.g. harmoniums, tablas and guitars, and burn them on public bonfires.

It is impossible to be a professional musician or singer. This has been called “cultural genocide and musical vandalism”. Artistic freedom of expression is strictly banned.

Restrictions and limitations increase with astonishing regularity. Women have no right to a seat in a taxi; they travel in the boot. If women need to go out, they must be accompanied by a male relative or their spouse. Men need to work, so arrangements can be difficult.

Do Afghan men support their women? They too can be uneducated or afraid to speak and many agree with the laws.

Many of these laws are strict interpretations of Islamic teachings which

the Taliban claim are divine commands. Some high-ranking Taliban have recently been invited to Brussels for EU meetings.

They will not be there to discuss women’s rights but to talk about deportations.

Inviting them legitimises them and generates prestige for them.

“Grave, systematic and institutionalised discrimination against women and girls is at the heart of Taliban ideology and rule. It’s gender apartheid.” Richard Bennet, the Human Rights Council.

On July 1st Ireland gets the EU presidency and our government has a moral obligation to raise this issue. Don’t let us forget our sisters, Afghanistani women and girls, who live with little hope and broken dreams.

Chasing sin: On Patrol with Fr. Bob

Last week I recounted how Callan PP, Canon Carrigan pursued courting couples with his horse and trap in the 1920s. In the nineteen forties and fifties, the town had other crusading priests who were committed to preserving morality in the parish.

Fr. Bob (not his real name) was one of them. Like Canon Carrigan, he patrolled the streets and laneways of Callan, keeping an eye on ditches, fields, and hay barns in the surrounding countryside.

But unlike the Canon, he preferred to move about on foot, though he sometimes agreed to travel by pony and trap or in a plush- if somewhat antiquated- baby ford car, one of the first examples of motorized transport in the area.

Courting couples dreaded the appearance of his dark, threatening form whenever or wherever they met under a protective night sky. In all seasons, he trekked the roads, streets, boreens, and laneways. In sweltering summer heat, he was out on patrol.

On a freezing winter’s night, even during snowfalls or hailstorms, he could be seen trudging along, eyes peeled and his mind in a constant state of alert.

His aim was to “nip sin in the bud”, in the timehonoured belief that prevention was better than curing.

Unfortunately, Fr. Bob found that both the cure and the prevention, as applied in the course of his morality patrols, were often worse than the sin, whether this had been committed or was still in the planning stage.

But he persevered in his

quest to steer the faithful away from wrongdoing. He believed the direct approach yielded better results than simply deferring to the goodwill and Christian principles of his flock.

Despite his conservative outlook, Fr. Bob was a keen socialite and a friend of all drinkers in the town. He had a key to the Grand Central Hotel and could call in for a jar or a tipple anytime he pleased, day or night.

He was always armed when on patrol, as much for his own protection as for administering chastisement.

His weapon of choice was the traditional Blackthorn stick, though on occasion he would take a horsewhip or a sally rod.

When asked why he sometimes opted for different modes of punishment, he would laugh heartily and say, “Ah sure, isn’t variety the spice of life.”

In keeping with his vocation, Father Bob also took a large rosary beads on his morality crusades in the Callan district. A naggin of Paddy whiskey completed the arsenal. This was to fortify himself for the task ahead.

Fr. Bob asked for volunteers to accompany him on his beat, and there was no shortage of high-minded locals who shared his zeal to preserve the Catholic ethos in Callan. Sometimes, a few lads heading home from the pub might find themselves press-ganged into joining a patrol.

The volunteers received hearty handshakes from the priest, and each was given a less polished but equally robust blackthorn. Led by their spiritual adviser, the men blessed themselves, invoking divine protection from harm.

Fr. Bob advised the lads on their task… A typical set of instructions would be: “…

Jim? Tommy, keep an eye on Bridge Street…Is anyone out on West Street? Be sure to look over the ditches, and don’t go into any fields that have bulls in them. The sinners wouldn’t be there anyhow…”

Setting off on a patrol, he hummed to himself: "Hi Ho, Hi Ho, we’re off to fight the foe.” Sean Holden, though a friend of Father Bob, never joined him on the beat. Being a man ahead of his time, Sean felt that young couples should be left to their own devices.

Sean had many a long and multi-faceted theological discourse with Father Bob, during which they would cover all aspects of Catholic and Christian belief but avoid the vexed subject of morality patrolling.

Though he had fixed times for patrols, mostly from eleven to three pm on selected nights,

Fr. Bob was “on call” twentyfour hours a day and always eager to confront immorality.

Often, while having a quiet drink in the Grand Central, a loyal parishioner would rush to him with a whispered message: “Father, they’re at it in a ditch, beyond in the Minauns.”

Fr. Bob would arise from his chair calmly, excuse himself, and ask politely if any men present would be willing to aid his bid to rescue endangered souls. Gathering a few volunteers, he made a hasty exit from the hotel.

Surviving volunteers have advised me not to mention their names, so I am respecting their wishes.

When they spotted a Michael Morris as Fr Bob in the 2015 drama courting Bridge Street Will Be couple, the

morality patrol gathered around the scene and Fr. Bob opened the Holy Book to read aloud whatever words of scripture he deemed appropriate. In cases where the couple refused to heed their presence, the men might prod them with the sticks or beat the bushes to distract them.

The startled couple were always given an opportunity to explain, and were then requested to do penance and say a joyful or sorrowful decade at the earliest opportunity.

In fairness to Father Bob, his apostolic activities were mild in comparison to those of the Grand Inquisitors, who, as we recall, went to far greater lengths to purify the spirit and keep Catholics on the straight and narrow path.

Their methods included flogging, stretching on the rack, and burning at the stake; methods never employed by Fr. Bob. Father Bob was fond of a popular prayer to St Michael the Archangel. It was a hard-hitting pre-Vatican II invocation that gave the Devil sheer hell, denouncing him

and seeking protection from his nefarious ways.

A copy of the Prayer to St. Michael was pinned on the door of the Town Hall to remind parishioners of the constant risk of damnation that faced them every day of the week. Temptation stalked the land, and you could never be too careful.

Deadly Sins, Venial Sins… and Sins that weren’t Sins at all When the missions came to Callan, Fr. Bob would walk the streets each day of Mission week, demanding names of anyone not attending missions. He emphasised the importance of cleansing one’s immortal soul by submitting to the ferocious oratory of the Missioners.

The Mission was welcomed and dreaded in about equal measure in Callan. Many people felt it helped to purge them of the Seven Deadly Sins and to keep the Devil at bay. It was an essential part of their belief system.

Others feared and disliked being reminded of their human weaknesses. They dreaded the possibility that they might perhaps be committing a sin without knowing it.

Their solicitude may have been well founded, as many ungodly acts and thoughts were considered offshoots of major sins. Some of these were under-publicised or occasionally overlooked by the Church, but nonetheless could have dire consequences in the afterlife, according to official teachings and doctrines.

You could be happily going about your business, thinking you were living an honest, clean, unblemished existence, in full accordance with the Laws of the Church, when in fact your soul might be in mortal jeopardy, stained by sins you never knew existed.

Holiday skin rules SKINCARE Heading somewhere hot this summer? Whether it’s a week in Spain, a city break in Italy or a long-awaited beach holiday, your skin may need a little extra care once the temperature rises.

The first rule is to start before you fly. The HSE advises packing a broad-spectrum, waterresistant sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 for adults and SPF 50 for children. But it also warns that sunscreen is “essential - but not a suit of

armour”, so hats, sunglasses, clothing and shade still matter.

Make sure you have enough for the whole trip. A small bottle will not last long if you’re applying it properly every day.

Apply sunscreen before you leave your room, not when you are already sitting by the pool. Reapply every two hours, and always after swimming, sweating or towel drying. Easy-to-miss areas include ears, lips, neck, shoulders, tops of feet and the backs of hands.

A hat, sunglasses and light,

loose clothing will do a lot of the work for you, especially during the hottest part of the day. If you are sightseeing, try to plan indoor stops or shaded breaks between late morning and mid-afternoon.

Holiday skin can quickly become dry from sun, air conditioning, chlorine, salt water and flights. Keep your routine simple: gentle cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen in the morning; cleanser and moisturiser again at night. This is not the time to start strong exfoliators or new active

products that could make skin more sensitive.

After a day in the sun, cool the skin with a shower and apply a light moisturiser or aftersun. If skin is red, hot or sore, stay out of the sun and let it recover.

Fake tan can give a holiday glow, but it does not replace sun protection. You still need proper sunscreen.

Finally, keep hydrated and watch your skin. New or changing moles, marks or patches should not be ignored when you get home.

Swimming is a great all-round exercise, but you don’t have to spend ages in the pool to feel the benefit.

Try a simple 20-minute swim. Start with five minutes at an easy pace to warm up, then alternate one steady length with one slower recovery length. Repeat for 10 minutes, then finish with a few relaxed lengths.

This keeps things manageable while still giving your heart, lungs and muscles a proper workout. Swimming works the whole body, including shoulders, back, core and legs, while being gentle on the joints.

To make it easier to stick with, pack your swim bag the night before and choose a regular time each week. Early morning, lunchtime or straight after work often works best because you’re less likely to put it off.

You don’t need to be fast. Focus on rhythm, breathing and showing up.

Swimming can be a simple way to work towards the HSE’s recommended 150 minutes of moderate weekly activity, while being easier on the joints than many higher-impact workouts.

How to reset after a stressful week HEALTH After a stressful week, it can be tempting to collapse on the sofa and scroll until bedtime.

While rest is important, a proper reset often comes from doing a few simple things that help your body and mind switch out of pressure mode.

Start by drawing a line under the week. Write down anything still circling in your head: jobs to do, worries, calls to make, things you don’t want to forget. Getting it onto paper can make it feel more manageable and help you stop mentally carrying it around.

Next, do one small tidy-up. It doesn’t have to be a full clean.

Clear the kitchen counter, change the bed sheets or put away the laundry. A calmer space can make it easier to feel calm yourself.

Fresh air helps too. A short walk, even for 10 minutes, can clear your head and loosen tension. Leave the phone in your pocket and notice what’s around you.

Try not to overpack the weekend with plans. Choose one thing that restores you,

whether that’s meeting a friend, cooking something nice, gardening, reading or doing absolutely nothing for an hour.

Sleep is often the best reset of all. Keep the evening simple, avoid too much late caffeine or alcohol, and give

yourself time to wind down before bed.

Finally, be realistic. You don’t have to fix everything by Monday. A reset is not about becoming a new person over the weekend. It’s about creating enough breathing space to feel more like yourself again.

A well-packed summer bag can save you from small annoyances when you’re out and about.

Start with sunscreen, ideally SPF 30 or higher, and remember to reapply if you’re outdoors for a while. Add sunglasses, a hat or cap, and a refillable water bottle to help you stay comfortable in the heat.

A light scarf or cover-up is useful for extra sun protection, chilly evenings or over-air-conditioned shops and restaurants. Keep lip balm with SPF, tissues, hand sanitiser and a few plasters in a small pouch so they’re easy to find.

A fold-up shopping bag is always handy, especially if you’re heading into town or visiting a market. If you’re going to the beach, park or garden, pack a small snack and a book.

Finally, don’t forget a portable phone charger. Summer days have a habit of lasting longer than planned.

The Quiet Land Brendan Corcoran and Ger Cody who will feature in the Quiet Land at Thomastown

The Quiet Land heads for Thomastown concert hall Written by Malachy McKenna, The Quiet Land is a poignant, bittersweet drama following two elderly, neighbouring farmers, Eamon and Nashee, who meet at a gate on a remote Irish hillside.

Originally a radio play—which won the PJ O'Connor Radio Drama Award in 2014—it was later adapted into a successful fulllength stage play.

The original radio play starred veteran Irish actors Barry Cassin and Kevin Flood. Together, they brought a combined 130 years of theatrical experience to their performances as the two isolated elderly farmers, Eamonn and Nashee. The stage adaptation of The Quiet Land starring Des Keogh and Derry Power premiered on August 17, 2015, at Bewley’s Cafe in Dublin. Following its initial run in late 2015, the production underwent multiple successful revivals and national tours: The Quiet Land by Malachy McKenna was staged at the Kilkenny Home Rule Club (at The Barn Studio) during a highly successful Lunchtime Theatre

run from August 4 to August 14, 2022. It was presented by the Barnstorm theatre company and was directed by Philip Hardy, with Brendan Corcoran and Gerry Cody as Eamonn and Nashee.

Set in the "hidden Ireland" far off the modern motorways and ring-roads, Eamon and Nashee lean on a fence and converse in the low-key, shorthand code of near-neighbours. Historically, their conversations belonged to a gentler time—rich in subtext, dry wit, and long pauses where silence was as telling as speech.

However, today's conversation is far from gentle. Facing the bitter reality of modern rural isolation and ageing, the men have grown desperate. They find themselves confronting heartbreaking truths and deep loneliness, while struggling to make sense of a world that is encroaching on them. Their lifelong friendship is tested to its absolute limit as they are forced to ask themselves if things can ever be the same again on their hillside.

Malachy McKenna is a member of the Writers Guild of Ireland.

He trained as an actor at the Focus Stanislavski Studio, Dublin, under the late Deirdre O’Connell.

His first stage play, Tillsonburg, premiered at the Focus Theatre and won the Stewart Parker Literary Trust Award. It subsequently had several Irish tours and had its North American premiere with the Canadian Stage Company, Toronto, and has played in Rep in Arad State Theatre, Romania, on numerous occasions. The Quiet Land, first written for radio, was a Gold Medal winner with RTÉ for Best Radio Drama at the World Festival of Radio in New York in July, 2015, having previously been awarded outright winner of the P.J. O’Connor Radio Drama Award in 2014. The stage adaptation of The Quiet Land, having premiered at Bewley’s, has toured to critical acclaim through Ireland and Scotland.

It comes from The Irish Film Institute's Terence McDonald Collection.

The first sequence tells the story of an elderly man who recalls memories of cycling to football matches and dancing at the crossroads, but now he and his wife miss their children and grandchildren who have taken the winding road to the city."The Stones Will Speak" is part of The Terence McDonald collection and is being shown in association with IFI Dublin . Special permission for showing this film was given by Peter McDonald.

Terence McDonald was a teacher, film historian, film collector, and pioneering amateur filmmaker. Born in the city of Derry in 1926, the films he made during his lifetime are diverse in genre and subject. They range from short comedies and experimental films to expository documentaries covering topics such as traveling and cross-community theatre, mental health services, and films that promoted Derry as a developing city looking hopefully to the future.

This week, The Kilkenny Observer welcomes John Comerford from Kilkenny tours who will bring us on trip to visit various locations in Kilkenny city and county. We hope to bring you a piece of history on the first Friday of each month. To give the full history on each location would take up too many column inches, but we hope that the information shared, will, at the very least, whet your appetite in discovering Kilkenny’s rich history, architecture, and hidden gems. This week John visits St Johns Priory on Johns Street in Kilkenny Photos jbs kilkenny St. John’s Priory was founded by the Augustinian Canons in the early 13th century, making it one of the earliest and most significant Augustinian houses in medieval Ireland. At its height, the priory occupied almost five acres, stretching along the northern line of the burgages from Michael Street down to the River Nore. This made it one of the largest religious precincts within medieval Kilkenny.

The Augustinians played a central role in the spiritual and social life of the town.

Beyond their religious duties, they provided accommodation and training facilities for young knights, particularly those associated with the Knights Hospitaller of St. John of Jerusalem. This connection reflects the priory’s strategic importance in supporting both ecclesiastical and military communities during the medieval period.

When the parish of St. John’s was formally created in 1211, the Augustinians were appointed to serve and maintain it. Outside the priory walls, open grounds were used for jousting, combat training, and other martial exercises — a reminder of the close relationship between the Church and the knightly orders.

Surviving Structures and Later History The principal surviving building of the priory stands today at the junction of John Street and Michael Street. Over the centuries, much of the complex fell into ruin, particularly after the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. Many of the original structures were dismantled or repurposed.

In 1817, the medieval Lady Chapel was re-roofed and adapted for use as the Parish Church of St. John’s (Church of Ireland).

Portions of the original 13th century fabric remain visible within the 19th century

reconstruction, offering a rare glimpse into the priory’s medieval architecture.

St. John’s was once known as “the Lantern of Ireland” — a poetic title inspired by the warm candlelight that glowed through its windows at night, illuminating the surrounding area and guiding travellers approaching the town.

Reuse of the Priory Buildings During the 1600s, stone from the ruined priory church was re-used to construct a military barracks. This building later became Evan’s Home, endowed by Joseph Evans as a charitable institution for elderly women. Today, Evan’s Home has been beautifully restored and now houses the outstanding Butler Gallery, one of Kilkenny’s most important cultural spaces.

Archaeological and Cultural Significance Archaeological investigations around the site have revealed evidence of cloister ranges, domestic quarters, burial grounds, and watermanagement systems connected to the River Nore. These findings highlight the priory’s sophistication and its role as a self-sustaining monastic community.

St. John’s Priory remains a key landmark in Kilkenny’s religious and architectural heritage — a place where medieval devotion, military history, and modern cultural life intersect.

How to cool your home without running up bills

HOME When the temperature climbs, as it did during the recent heatwave, it’s easy to reach for fans, air coolers or portable air conditioning. But there are cheaper ways to keep your home comfortable - and they’re worth knowing in case the heat returns.

The first rule is to keep heat out in the first place. Close curtains, blinds or shutters during the hottest part of the day, especially on south and west-facing windows. Even light-coloured curtains can make a noticeable difference

by stopping rooms from turning into glasshouses.

Ventilation matters too, but timing is everything. Open windows early in the morning and later in the evening when the air outside is cooler.

During the middle of the day, keep windows closed if the air outside is warmer than indoors. To get a breeze moving, open windows on opposite sides of the house if possible.

Fans can help, but use them wisely. A fan cools people, not rooms, so switch it off when you leave. Placing a bowl of ice or a frozen bottle

In the kitchen, avoid using the oven during hot spells.

Outside, shade is your friend. A simple awning, parasol, pergola or well-placed planting can stop the sun hitting windows and walls. Deciduous trees and climbing plants are especially useful,

giving shade in summer while letting light through in winter.

If you are planning upgrades, look at insulation and airtightness. They are often thought of as winter measures, but they also help keep heat out in summer. Good attic insulation, draught control and properly fitted windows can make a home more comfortable all year round.

For bedrooms, keep bedding light, use cotton sheets and open the room up once the evening cools down. A hot water bottle filled with cold water can also work really well.

Visitors on the way? Focus on the areas people will actually see and use.

First, clear the hallway. Put away shoes, coats and bags so guests have somewhere to step in and hang their things.

Second, freshen the bathroom. Wipe the sink, mirror and toilet, empty the bin and put out a clean hand towel. A little soap and a fresh loo roll go a long way.

Third, tackle surfaces in the living room and kitchen. Clear clutter into a basket to sort later, then give tables and counters a quick wipe.

Fourth, check seating. Plump cushions, fold throws and make sure there are enough chairs if people are staying for a meal.

Finally, add one welcoming touch: open a window, light a candle, put flowers in a jug or switch on a lamp. You don’t need a perfect house, just a comfortable one.

Before heading off on holiday, it’s worth taking a few minutes to check your home is safe, secure and not quietly running up bills while you’re away.

Start with the basics: make sure all windows and doors are locked, including upstairs windows, patio doors, side gates, sheds and garages.

Don’t leave spare keys under mats, flowerpots or bins.

If someone is calling in to check the house, give them the key directly.

Unplug non-essential appliances such as phone chargers, coffee machines, hair dryers, TVs and game consoles. This reduces standby

electricity use and lowers the risk of faults while the house is empty.

In the kitchen, empty bins, clear out food that may go off and check the fridge. If you’re away for a longer spell, use up perishables beforehand.

Run the dishwasher before you leave so dirty plates aren’t sitting there for days.

Water is another key check.

Look under sinks for any signs of leaks and make sure taps are fully turned off. If you’re going away for a longer period, consider turning off the water supply, especially if your home has had leaks before.

Set heating or hot water controls appropriately.

A visit to Tramore for Bu

By Kilkenny Observer reporter Photos : jbskilkenny The Butts is an historic, working-class neighbourhood in Kilkenny City. Originally a medieval archery range where citizens practiced their marksmanship on targets called ‘butts’, it has evolved into a tight-knit community celebrated for its deep-rooted cultural and sporting heritage. Located at Butts Green stands the Butts Cross, a small limestone votive cross that dates to between 1605 and 1620. It is believed to have been erected by wealthy inhabitants in memory

of departed relatives or as a private religious monument. Well, you’ll be glad to her, that since those far off days, that tight-knit community spirit has never waned. In fact, it would appear that the much loved community spirit has strengthened. Last week, as the sun was looking for stones to split, the Kilkenny Observer took a stroll to the Butts Green, to wave off 27 men and women from the area as they boarded ‘Lefty’ Comerfords bus to Tramore. We spoke with Liz Reade, and Josephine Woods, two of the organisers of the trip.

Age friendly “We are age friendly and we work in conjunction with Kilkenny County Council to run trips like these” said Josephine. Mrs Woods continued: “Over the last few years we have travelled to places like Waterford and the Aboretum and the trips always go down well”. Chair of the group is Liz Reade who said the trips always create a good feel factor. “The way the world is, all we seem to be hearing is bad news. So if we can provide a day out at the seaside, with a meal thrown

into the bargain, then that brings a small bit of joy into the life of this community”,said Liz, who also thanked Kilkenny Co Council for their ongoing support. Prior to their departure local PP, Fr Willie Purcell took time out at mass to wish all travellers a great day out and a safe return. The word on the street is that the day was a roaring success and although a few cases of sunburn was reported, the ninety nines and the paddle in the sea made up for the minor burns. The day at the seaside included Tea, coffee and sandwiches in the ‘Majestic hotel’, followed by a stroll along the Prom, a little dabble in the slot machines, and a swim. One of the ladies travelling, when asked if she was looking forward to the day in Tramore replied: “a couple of the women will be visiting the ‘Metal Man’ because local tradition claims that if an unmarried woman hops around the base of the pillar three times, she’ll be married within a year. Knowing our luck, the women will probably end up with a twisted ankle”, joked the traveller. It is understood that the group are already planning for next year.

Strawberry, Yoghurt and Oat Summer Pots RECIPE

No fuss summer eating

These simple summer pots are perfect for breakfast, dessert or an easy make-ahead treat. They use fresh strawberries, creamy yoghurt and a quick oat crumble for texture.

You can prepare the parts in advance and assemble them just before serving, or layer them in glasses and keep them chilled.

Serves: 4 Ingredients • 300g fresh strawberries • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup • A squeeze of lemon juice • 400g natural yoghurt or Greek yoghurt • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 100g oats • 30g butter • 1 tablespoon brown sugar • A small handful of chopped nuts or seeds, optional • Fresh mint, optional Method Start by preparing the strawberries. Wash, hull and slice them, then place them in a bowl with the honey or maple syrup and a squeeze of lemon juice. Stir gently and leave them to sit for 10 to 15 minutes. This helps the strawberries release their juices and creates a light syrup.

Next, make the oat topping. Melt the butter in a small pan over a medium heat, then add the oats and brown sugar. Stir for a few minutes until the oats are lightly toasted and golden. If using nuts or seeds, add them near the end so they do not burn.

Tip the mixture onto a plate and allow it to cool. It will crisp up slightly as it sits.

In a separate bowl, mix the yoghurt with the vanilla extract. If you prefer a sweeter pot, add a little extra honey.

To assemble, spoon some yoghurt into the bottom of four small glasses or bowls. Add a layer of strawberries, followed by a spoonful of the toasted oats. Repeat the layers if you have room, finishing with strawberries and a little crumble on top.

Serve straight away for the best crunch, or chill for later and add the oat topping just before eating.

Tip: You can swap the strawberries for raspberries, blueberries or chopped peaches. For a more indulgent dessert, use half yoghurt and half whipped cream.

FOOD Summer is one of the easiest times of year to eat with the seasons. The food is brighter, lighter and often needs very little done to it. A handful of fresh herbs, a tray of roasted vegetables or a bowl of berries can do a lot of the work for you.

Bord Bia’s seasonal calendar highlights produce such as French beans, broad beans, beetroot, broccoli, strawberries and chives as coming into,

or being in, season. That gives plenty of inspiration for simple meals that feel fresh without being complicated.

One easy way to start is to build meals around vegetables rather than treating them as a side dish. A warm salad with beetroot, potatoes, herbs and cheese can be filling enough for lunch. Broccoli or French beans can be tossed through pasta, served with grilled fish or added to an omelette. Broad beans work well with lemon, olive oil and herbs for a quick

summer side.

Fresh herbs are one of the simplest ways to make everyday food feel more special.

Chives can lift scrambled eggs, potato salad or cream cheese.

Parsley, mint and basil can brighten salads, sandwiches and dressings.

It also helps to keep a few picnic-style ingredients in the fridge. Good bread, cheese, tomatoes, cooked eggs, salad leaves, cooked potatoes and a simple dressing can quickly become lunch, a light supper

or something to pack for a day out.

For busy weeks, choose dishes that stretch over two meals.

A tray of roasted vegetables can be served warm with chicken or fish one evening, then folded into couscous, pasta or salad the next day. A tart, frittata or potato salad can also work well for lunchboxes.

Berries are another summer gift. Strawberries can be added to breakfast, spooned over yoghurt, served with meringue or simply eaten as they are.

Cool drinks without the fuss DRINK Summer drinks don’t need to be complicated to feel like a treat. A few simple ingredients in the fridge can turn water, tonic or iced tea into something that feels fresh, colourful and a little more special.

Sparkling water is the easiest place to start. Add slices of cucumber, a few mint leaves and plenty of ice for a clean, refreshing drink that works well with lunch, dinner or a sunny afternoon in the garden. Lemon, lime or berries can also be added if you want a little more flavour.

Iced tea is another good option and can be made ahead.

Brew a strong pot of tea, let it cool, then chill it in the fridge.

Serve with lemon slices and ice. If you prefer something sweeter, add a little honey or sugar while the tea is still

warm so it dissolves properly.

Elderflower cordial is a useful bottle to keep on hand through the summer. Mixed with soda water and ice, it makes a quick, floral drink that feels more grown-up than ordinary squash. Add a slice of lemon or a sprig of mint to finish it off.

For coffee lovers, homemade iced coffee is simple.

Make coffee as usual, let it cool, then pour over ice with milk. A jar with a lid is handy for shaking it together.

Fruit-infused water is another low-effort idea. Strawberries, orange slices, cucumber, mint or lemon can be added to a jug of cold water and left in the fridge.

For something with a spritz feel, try tonic water with orange, lemon, herbs and plenty of ice. It is alcohol-free, refreshing and takes seconds to make.

SENIORS LOSE Clara lost out to James Stephens in the Division 2 League final in Clara. It was a tight affair in the first half, after which Clara led 0-9 to 0-7. They really should have been ahead by more and there was no indication of what was to follow.

However, the second half was a total collapse by the home team. They didn’t score from play until the 30th minute through Liam Ryan and a late flicked Conor O Shea goal only served to put a better gloss on the scoreboard. It was a collapse similar to Cork’s in the All Ireland final last year but at least Clara have the consolation that the stakes weren’t as high here. Nevertheless, learnings will have to be taken and very few Clara men will be happy with their showing on this occasion.

O’Loughlin Gaels Under 6 to Under 12 boys enjoyed their most enjoyable fixture of the year in a major water battle against Parents and Coaches in the heat last week. CAMOGIE CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to O’Loughlin Gaels players Laura Greene and Laura Murphy, who along with their Kilkenny senior camogie teammates qualified for the All-Ireland quarterfinals. On Saturday last they overcame Wexford at Chadwicks Wexford Park. The final score was 1-12 to 1-7.

The win was the girls fifth win from five games in the group stages of the Glen Dimplex All‑Ireland championship.

CATHAOIRLEACH NUA Congratulations to O’Loughlin Gaels member, Cllr Joe Malone, who has been elected as the new Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council.

Joe received the chain of office at a ceremony in County Hall last week.

COMMUNITY GAMES NEWS St John’s Under 12 boys represented Kilkenny in the Cairn Community Games Under 12 outdoor soccer Leinster quarter finals in Burrin, Carlow on Friday night last. They faced the Carlow champions Bagnelstown who had played 5 matches to reach the quarter final beating the Wexford champions Rathgarogue, Cushinstown earlier in the week. St John’s ran out convincing winners on 10 goals to 3 score line. They now advance to the Leinster finals in Longford on 11th July. Best of luck boys.

DARREN AND CHLOE WED Congratulations to local hurling star Darren Brennan and his new bride Chloe Purcell who were married on Friday last in a ceremony at Rothe House Kilkenny. Best man was Caoimhainn Bergin (friend of groom) and bridesmaid was Alannah Vawser (sister of bride). The meal was in Rive Gauche Kilkenny and drinks afterwards in The Left Bank. The honeymoon is being spent in Ibiza.

Darren is popular and well known local St Lachtains goalkeeper since his schoolboy days and was part of Kilkenny minor, u21 and senior panels over the years The happy couple will reside in their new home in Freshford and wished all the very best in their newly married life together.

MAX ON IRISH TEAM Well done to young local lad Max O Neill who was part of the Irish u14 soccer team who took part in SFAI tournament recently. There were four teams in the tournament Scotland, Isle of Man, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Max was the only Kilkenny representative on the team. They won all their games.

Max was also captain of the Kilkenny team who took part in the Kennedy cup competition in Limerick the previous week.

SOCCER All is quiet now on the field of play, but great work has been done at the new facilities at Woodview in recent months.

Well done to all at the club involved in the challenge FIELD DAY Threecastles GAA club hosted a well attended community field day on Sunday last with a strong turn out and great community spirit throughout the afternoon. Activities included long puck, hang tough, children’s races and an entertaining mixed football exhibition match featuring Threecastles hurling panel and Threecastles Gaelic for mothers and others team. The club wish to express sincere thanks to Kilkenny County Council for part funding the event through the Community event Grant.

GAA St Lachtains minor hurlers defeated neighbours Tullaroan in the Roinn C league semi final in Pairc Lachtain. It was a very competitive game despite both sides missing several players due to a combination of injuries and holidays. St Lachtains won on a scoreline of 2-29 to 4-13.

The junior F side were defeated by Carrickshock in their league semi final at Hugginstown on a final scoreline of 3-19 to 1-11.

The u14 s travel to Glenmore on Sunday morning to take on the hosts in Roinn B quarter final.

The minors play Mullinavat on Monday evening at 7pm in Mullinavat in the first round of the Roinn C league/championship. This is the first of the new championship format that is similar to the adult hurling structure.

RACE NIGHT The club will hold their annual race night at Kilkenny greyhound stadium at James Park on 17th July you can contact any committee member for purchase of tickets or sponsorship details.

JAMES STEPHENS GAA AND CAMOGIE CLUB SENIOR / INTER LEAGUE FINAL It was obvious that the Senior/Inter hurling League Final which was played in a heatwave on Clara’s well presented grounds was going to be a test of stamina for both clubs. The physically stronger Clara side took charge early in the game and led by 0-05 to 0-02 after 10 minutes.

Once the James Stephens defenders came to grips with their lively opponents slowing down their momentum, scoring opportunities opened for the Village forwards. Points from the caman of trusty free taker Conor McEvoy levelled the game at 0-05 each in the 12th minute. After Shane Donohoe shot over an excellent point in the 20th minute the Clara men again took charge striking three scores to take a 0-09 to 0-07 lead into the break. Clara continued their power play and held the lead until the 9th minute when goalkeeper Sean Manogue delivered a long range free over the black spot to level the game at 0-10 each. Now with the tight marking Village backs regaining the upper hand, ably led by Eoin Deely, Ben Lawlor and Sam McEvoy the forwards went on a scoring spree hitting the home team for 1-06 without reply. In the intense heat the James Stephens players seemed to revel in the conditions and in the 24th minute a fine passing movement down the wing saw Zac Scanlon pass to Conor McEvoy who finished to the net. One minute later at the end of a similar move Matt McWey rattled the net to give James Stephens an unassailable lead at 2-16 to 0-12. Throughout the game some impressive displays in difficult conditions were witnessed from team captain Niall Mullins, Oisin Bateman, and Sean Deely to help secure the 2026 Div 2 League Title trophy.

U-16 SHIELD FINAL

The James Stephens U-16 hurlers claimed the U-16 Roinn “A” Shield title with a dominant 0-27 to 1-15 display against the host club, O’Loughlin Gaels in the sweltering heat of St. John’s Park. A sluggish start by The Village saw the O’Loughlin Gaels take a 0-02 lead inside the first minute which was swiftly balanced by the inform Mikey Dorney by the 5th minute. O’Loughlin’s forged ahead again at 0-05 to 0-03 in the 10th minute.

In response the Village lads upped the pressure forcing two quality saves out of the ‘Gaels netminder in the 12th and 16th minutes to preserve their narrow lead. An excellent Briain Walsh point levelled the game at 0-05 each in the 18th minute. With Henry Phelan marshalling a stubborn Village defence a point by James Lyons in the 27th minute started a run of scores to give the visitors a 0-12 to 0-09 halftime lead. A 3rd minute point by Mikey Dorney opened the 2nd half but O’Loughlin’s responded with two of their own before James Stephens netminder Michael Phelan pulled off a point blank save in the 4th minute which seemed to deflate the home club.

The outstanding Village centre forward Briain Walsh stepped forward and shot over four unanswered points before James Lyons (10min), Adam Malone (11min), Jeffrey Cleere (12 min) made top quality contributions to increase the James Stephens lead at 0-20 to 0-14 lead. With tiring legs in the intense heat, the astute use of substitutes Cody Owens, Oisin Brennan, Jim Parsons and Max Kealy in the 2nd half helped to boost the Village effort over the closing quarter.

A breakaway O’Loughlins goal in the 19th minute failed to inspire the home team resulting in the free scoring Village forwards adding to their total for a comfortable 0-27 to 1-15 Division 1 Shield title victory.

FEILE FOOTBALL Hearty congratulations to the club’s U-14 footballers who undertook the long journey to Co. Derry at the weekend to contest the 2026 Feile Peile Na Nog Div 5 competition and did so with an abundance of football skills and determination. Their metal was tested from the start against Desertmartin (Co. Derry) whom they edged out in a close finish with a score of 2-03 to 0-07. They then went on to enjoy a comfortable 2nd round victory over Glack before hitting the net four times against the English county representatives Lancashire for a 4-01 to 1-03 third round victory. The young Village lads continued their winning streak with another four goal salvo to account for St. Patrick’s (Derry) 4-04 to 0-08 in their 5th round fixture which earned them a place in the tournament semi-final. After a long exhausting day’s play in the unseasonably warm weather the proud James Stephens players fought a brave battle right to the final whistle before going down by the host club, The Loup (Co. Derry), 1-03 to 0-02. They might consider themselves somewhat unlucky as the goals dried up due to the outstanding saves by The Loup goalkeeper, a rebound off the post and some errant shooting which sealed their fate. However, safe to say the proud young James Stephens players wore the famous Red and Green jersey of The Village with pride and determination over the day’s play. Our thanks to the travelling team mentors Diarmuid O’Dowd, Eoin Larkin, Michael Fogarty and the parents who travelled for their care and supervision of the players on the long and memorable trip to Co. Derry. A special word of appreciation to the host club The Loup for their generosity to the travelling party over the weekend.

PADDY MULLEN TOURNAMENT On Sunday afternoon the 33rd running of the popular Paddy Mullen Memorial minor tournament took place in a windy Pairc Sheamuis Mac Stiophain. Defending champions James Stephens along with Ballyboden St.Enda’s (Dublin), St. Vincent’s (Dublin), Blackrock (Cork), Glen Rovers (Cork) and Gortnahoe (Tipp) contested for the Paddy Mullen trophy. After the preliminary rounds James Stephens and Blackrock qualified to compete for the cup final. In a complete team performance, the host club retained the title with a powerful display of defending and forward play on a score of 2-16 to 2-11. In the shield final Glen Rovers proved too strong for Ballyboden St. Enda’s to take the Peter Conroy trophy with a score of 5-10 to 0-14. At the presentation chairman Richie Manogue thanked the six clubs for participating in the popular minor hurling competition and wished them well in their upcoming county championship campaigns. Richie also thanked the referees Conor Everard, Eoin

Behan, John McCormack and Stephen Delaney acknowledging that the competition could not take place without their willing cooperation.

Finally, Richie thanked Teresa Mullen through her son. Liam and the extended Mullen family for their continued support for the tournament in memory of the late Paddy Mullen, a passionate promoter of our national game with the underage committee of the club.

SYMPATHIES The sympathy of the membership is extended to Ms. Mary O’Shea, Cypress Grove, on the passing of her young son Tadhg, after a short illness on Friday of last week. GOLF CLASSIC To complete a busy weekend schedule of league final fixtures, Feile Peile na nOg in Derry, The Paddy Mullen Tournament, the club’s annual Golf Classic took place on Thursday and Friday on Kilkenny Golf Club’s pristine layout. In glorious sunshine 78 teams competed in the popular fundraiser over the two days. Harry Wallace’s line up of Niall Moloney, Gavin and Aidan Phelan took the honours with a score of 89 pts, just edging out Kieran McQuillan’s team of Paul Colfer, Harry Donovan and Eamon Young based on a better back 9 score. In 3rd place came Jason Egar’s team of Carol Connellan, Ian Hawe and Andy Smith. The non GUI team winners were Paddy, Michael and Patrick Neary and Craig Murray. Our thanks are also extended to the many sponsors whose contributions help to fund the success of the popular fundraiser.

JUNIOR “B” LEAGUE The Junior “B” hurler registered a convincing 2-17 to 1-13 win over neighbours Danesfort in the Junior “B” league final. Trailing by 1-05 to 0-05 at the water break they upped their game to outscore their opponents by 1-06 to 0-03 over the closing 15 minutes of the half. The goal came courtesy of the lively Zac Scanlon while David Walton punished any defensive infringements by Danesfort with his free taking to give The Village a 1-11 to 1-08 half time lead. Astute substitutions due to the intense heat saw the introduction of Ross Whelan and James Bergin gave a further lift to the James Stephens team. With Eoin Larkin in commanding form at centre back and Daniel Ring with his speed and agility causing difficulties for the Danesfort defenders, resulting in forced fouls which the unerring David Walton punished with ease, a second Zac Scanlon three pointer secured the 2026 League title for The Village on a 2-17 to 1-13 scoreline. Over the hour’s play James Tyrrell, Conor Millea, Allen Larkin and Ross Whelan also contributed positively to the impressive victory. Well done to all concerned. CAMOGIE NEWS We were incredibly proud to see our club girls Erin Morrissey and Holly Ryan named on the Minor Team of the Year. All the hard work, sacrifice, and dedication paid off. This recognition is so richly deserved.

What an effort from the U14 girls to get it over the line and make it into the U14C league final.

Every player counted and fought hard against a strong Mullinavat team. Massive well done to the girls. League final date and venue to be confirmed. Best of luck to the team and management.

The U8 team were delighted to welcome Kilkenny Senior Camogie Captain, Caoimhe Dowling, to Bennettsbridge.The girls were absolutely thrilled to learn from one of Kilkenny’s finest. It’s not every day you get to train with a superstar.

A massive thank you to Caoimhe for giving her time, sharing her expertise, and inspiring the next generation of camogie stars. It was really appreciated.

GAA Féile Football 2026: Bennettsbridge under 15 team represented Kilkenny last Saturday in Wexford in the Football Féile competition. In a group with Davidstown Cortnacuddy, Roscrea and Inny Gaels the ‘Bridge came third in the group and qualified for the shield semi-final where they defeated St Mary’s of Maudlinstown. In a nail biting final the lads overcame Davidstown by a single point. Well done to all the players and management on a great achievement. For a Kilkenny side to bring home football silverware is great.

Underage Games: The under 14 team defeated Tullogher away last Monday week to top the group and now play Piltown in the league quarter final next weekend. Our minors play Glenmore away on July 6th in the first round of the league / championship. Our younger age groups are now in action in go games. Best wishes to all involved.

Bennettsbridge National School: Hard luck to Bennettsbridge National school who recently reached the Roinn B semi-final and also the country cup final where they lost out to Roinn A runners up Mooncoin in the final. Thanks to Vinny Shiels, Spike Ryan and Alan Dobbyn who looked after the team again this year.

GRAIG’S HERITAGE GOES DIGITAL We are delighted to announce that with the help of funding from the Heritage Council, together with Tidy Town funds, Graig’s heritage trail and monks trail can now be accessed and followed by phone. The newly installed interpretative panels beside the Globe and at the Dry Dock (on the foot entrance to the Hub) have a QR code which launches the trails, audio guide and some lovely imagery of the town in times past.

FERRY BRIDGE Local people should be aware that the Ferry Bridge is due to close for repairs. The closure is set to begin June 24th and is expected to last until the end of August. Local Diversions will be in place.

BALLYFASY WIND FARM An Coimisiún Pleanála has announced that under Section 182A of the Planning and Development Act (Strategic Infrastructure) on the 110kV Grid Connection for Ballyfasy Wind Farm it would not be possible or appropriate to make a decision within the originally anticipated timeframe.

The date has been extended to be in alignment with the decision date for the related REDIII windfarm application. The Coimisiún intends to determine the application before 11th January ’27.

NATIONAL HERITAGE WEEK Heritage Week is taking place from 15th to 23rd August this year. The theme for 2026 is Heritage at Risk, shining a light on places, stories, traditions and environments that need our care and attention. KILMACOW ROSEDALE BOOK LAUNCH Well done to all involved in organising on Friday evening the launch of the book ’40 years Caring and Sharing’ by Liam Dalton to mark four decades of Rosedale’s service to the elderly in Kilmacow and surrounding parishes. Speakers on the night included Liam Tobin, Fr. Peter Muldowney and Liam Dalton who together traced the development of Rosedale from its convent days under the Presentation Sisters to the residential home which became ‘home from home’ for so many people since 1986. Tributes were paid to the people who had supported the project from the outset, who had served on the boards of management over many years, who had worked in Rosedale to ensure the excellent level of care and service which residents deserve and so greatly appreciate. The great contribution of the Medical Missionaries of Mary was also acknowledged. The sports hall was full with most of the attendance having connections to Rosedale at one stage or another over the past four decades.

It was wonderful evening of memory and appreciation. The book can be purchased directly from Rosedale.

GRAVEYARD MASS There was a large attendance at the Graveyard Mass in St. Senan’s Church which was held on Friday last, 26th June. Many had spent the week tending to graves to complement the great work of the CE Scheme so that the graveyard presented itself in top class condition. A collection was taken up for its continuing maintenance.

Mass was celebrated by Fr. Martin Tobin with Fr. Michael Kelly, Fr. Peter Muldowney and Fr. Larry O’Keeffe in attendance.

Fr. Tobin thanked the CE Scheme for their work, his colleague priests for celebrating the Mass with him, Bernie Moloney for the preparation of the Mass and the choir for their contribution to it. He thanked those in attendance who by their presence in such numbers showed the significance they attach to this annual communal connection to those who have gone before us.

UPGRADE OF BELMONT AND ABBEY ROADS The Section 85 agreement from Waterford City and County Council has been received by Kilkenny County Council. The public consultation process for the upgrade of the Belmont Road and the Abbey Road is likely to begin before the end of July.

KIERAN’S COMMUNITY HALL Johnstown was excited and the sun shone brightly for the visit of the Minister for Community and Rural Affairs Dara Calleary accompanied by a host of County Councillors from Kilkenny and Tipperary and some members of the County Council recently. The purpose of the visit was the official opening of the newly refurbished community hall. A large crown from the community attended and refreshments were served after the official part of the gathering.

Johnstown Town Team and St. Kieran’s Hall Committee would like to thank all the community for their incredible support throughout the refurbishment. Thanks to all the volunteers from the different clubs and societies who ensured everything went without a hitch on the day. Special thanks to the catering team and all those who gave in scrumptious treats. The whole community showed so much support for the lovely little village.

DILLION QUIRKE FOUNDATION The Fenian Club have organised for the Dillion Quirke Foundation to come to the club and

screen some of the juvenile players 12 to 18 year olds for both hurling and camogie players. screening will take place in the Community Hall on Tuesday July 14th and is being sponsored by Abbot, Clonmel. CONAHY HURLING The minor hurlers lost out to Emeralds in the Kilkenny Vehicle Centre Roinn B League Shield Final in Urlingford. The home side were the better all through the opening half and led by 0-13 to 0-7 at half time. Conahy battled to reduce the deficit, but Emeralds finished strongly to win out by 1-22 to 1-13, with the Conahy goal coming from Evan Buggy as a consolation score late on.

Playing in their fourth ever Aylward Cup Final, home side Dunnamaggin finally got their hands on the trophy with an impressive and thoroughly deserved twelve-point victory over Rower-Inistioge on Sunday last. Having suffered heartbreak in previous deciders in 1999, 2009 and again in 2023, Dunnamaggin made no mistake this time around as they produced a dominant display from the opening whistle to claim the Michael Lyng Motors sponsored title in front of an enthusiastic home support.

The foundations for victory were laid in a blistering opening eight minutes.

Dunnamaggin stormed into a 0-7 to 0-0 lead with some outstanding attacking hurling and never looked in danger of surrendering that advantage.

Their movement, work rate and accuracy immediately put Rower-Inistioge under pressure and the visitors struggled to cope with the intensity being brought by the home side. Those opening

seven points came from seven different players, highlighting the spread of scoring threats throughout the Dunnamaggin team. Ray Cody, Dylan Crehan, Denis Walsh, Conor Lawton, Alex Moore, Tim Doherty and Andy Hickey all found the target from open play during that devastating

Rower-Inistioge eventually opened their account in the eighth minute through former Kilkenny hurler Richie Leahy, but it proved to be only a brief interruption to Dunnamaggin's dominance. The home side continued to dictate pro-

ceedings around the middle third, winning the majority of breaking ball while their half-back line consistently denied their opponents time and space.

With possession secured, Dunnamaggin were able to launch wave after wave of attacks and continued to add to their tally through a variety of scorers. Their sharp support play and willingness to work the ball into good shooting positions ensured they maintained an excellent conversion rate throughout the opening half. By the interval the home side held a commanding 0-16 to 0-7 advantage. Significantly, they had nine different scorers on the board compared to just four for RowerInistioge, underlining both the balance within their attack and the difficulties the visitors faced in containing them.

While Rower-Inistioge battled honestly throughout, they never managed to string together the sequence of scores that might have placed any real pressure on Dunnamaggin. Every time they reduced the deficit, the home side responded with another well-worked point to keep the contest firmly under their

control.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Dunnamaggin showed no signs of easing off and continued to dominate possession while remaining disciplined defensively. Denis Walsh proved particularly influential after the restart, contributing from both placed balls and open play as he kept the scoreboard moving.

Further points from Jamie Tallon, Tim Doherty and Jimmy O'Neill stretched the margin to twelve points by the 49th minute as Dunnamaggin led 0-23 to 0-11. At that stage the outcome was effectively beyond doubt, with the home side displaying the confidence and composure of a team determined not to let another final slip from their grasp.

The game's only goal arrived in the 53rd minute and served as the perfect finishing touch to an excellent team performance. Following a hectic goalmouth scramble, Jimmy O'Neill reacted quickest to force the sliotar over the line and spark loud celebrations among the home supporters. The major score copperfastened Dunnamaggin's superiority and removed any lingering hopes of a late

Rower-Inistioge comeback. To their credit, Rower-Inistioge continued to battle until the final whistle and added further points before the end, but they could make little impression on a Dunnamaggin defence that had been solid throughout. Every line of the home team contributed significantly, from the goalkeeper and full-back line through to a hard-working midfield and an attack that consistently converted possession into scores.

When referee sounded the final whistle, Dunnamaggin were worthy winners on a scoreline of 1-24 to 0-15.

It was a victory built on a superb opening quarter, relentless work rate, excellent distribution of scores and an organised defensive display that gave Rower-Inistioge few opportunities to build momentum.

JJ Kavanagh Junior Hurling B League Final 2026 James Stephens 2-17; Danesfort 1-13 John Power at Danesfort GAA Grounds.

James Stephens captured the JJ Kavanagh Junior B Hurling League title with a deserved seven-point victory over home side Danesfort on Wednesday evening, producing an impressive all-round display to secure the silverware.

The success marked the city club's second Junior B League triumph in four seasons, having previously lifted the title in 2023. It was a fitting reward for a disciplined and determined performance in difficult conditions, with soaring temperatures leading to scheduled water breaks during each half.

James Stephens recovered from an early deficit to lead 1-11 to 1-8 at the interval before extending their advantage to six points by the final water break. From there, they controlled the closing stages with composure, limiting Danesfort's opportunities while adding the insurance scores needed to seal a memorable victory.

The visitors made the ideal start when Ronan Delahunty opened the scoring with a well-taken point. Danesfort responded impressively, however, with Jonathon Kennedy, Mark Fitzpatrick and Ciaran Mullen all finding the target to move the hosts into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead.

David Walton opened his account with the first of an outstanding personal tally of nine points, all from placed balls, but Danesfort struck for the opening goal in the ninth minute. A blistering run by Eanna O'Casaide carved open the James Stephens defence before Coleman Dunne applied the finishing touch to the net, giving the home side a 1-3 to 0-2 advantage.

James Stephens emerged from the break with renewed purpose and quickly turned the game in their favour.

Allen Corr Larkin rattled the net with a superb ground shot before points from Conor Millea and Walton levelled matters.

Danesfort replied through a Matthews Cowley free and another score from the influential O'Casaide to leave the sides deadlocked at 1-7 apiece.

The Village finished the half strongly, however, with Walton continuing to punish any indiscretions from placed balls as they edged clear to establish a deserved three-point advantage at the interval, 1-11 to 1-8.

They made another flying start after the restart. Walton converted an early free before Zac Scanlon struck a crucial second goal to stretch the visitors' lead to seven points at 2-12 to 1-8.

Although Danesfort battled hard to stay in contention, James Stephens maintained their grip on proceedings, entering the final quarter with a healthy 2-14 to 1-11 cushion.

The home side made one final push as O'Casaide converted a free before Jonathon Kennedy added another point to reduce the gap. However, James Stephens never looked rattled. Walton added two more expertly struck frees, with a fine point from Conor Millea sandwiched in between, ensuring the Village

closed out the contest in convincing fashion.

The two clubs will not have to wait long for another meeting. They are scheduled to renew acquaintances at the same Danesfort venue next month in the opening round of the Junior B Championship, where Danesfort will be eager to gain revenge, while James Stephens will look to build on this impressive league-winning performance.

Mullinavat edge thrilling contest to reach League Final JJ Kavanagh and Sons Junior F Hurling League Semi Final Mullinavat 1-15; Lisdowney 2-11.

Well done to the Mullinavat Junior F Hurling team, who secured their place in the league final after a hard-fought one-point victory over Lisdowney at the Mullinavat GAA Grounds. In a game that remained in the balance right until the closing moments, Mullinavat showed great determination and composure to emerge victorious and now look forward to a final against Carrickshock.

The contest proved to be an entertaining and competitive affair from the opening whistle, with both sides producing some excellent passages of play. Lisdowney deserve enormous credit for their spirited performance, refusing to give in despite facing a difficult challenge in the closing stages. The visitors played the entire final quarter with just 14 players after a dismissal but continued to battle for every ball and pushed Mullinavat all the way through nine minutes of added time.

It was Lisdowney who enjoyed the better of the opening half, taking their chances well and making life difficult for the home defence. Their attacking trio of Edward Connery, Joseph Bergin and Billy Grogan were particularly influential, combining effectively to keep the score-

board ticking over. Their movement, work rate and sharp finishing helped Lisdowney establish a narrow advantage, and they deservedly went into the interval leading by 2-6 to 1-8 after an impressive opening 30 minutes.

Mullinavat, however, remained firmly in the contest thanks to a crucial first-half goal from Jack Power. The score came after an excellent piece of play involving Pat Mulhearn, whose fine catch and intelligent lay-off created the perfect opportunity. Power made no mistake, finishing confidently to the net and ensuring his side stayed within touching distance heading into the second half.

worked tirelessly to close the gap.

Every score was hard earned as Lisdowney defended bravely despite their numerical disadvantage. The visitors continued to threaten on the break and never allowed Mullinavat to feel comfortable, making for a tense and dramatic finish that kept supporters fully engaged until the final whistle.

As the game entered injury time, the tension around the ground grew with every attack. Nine minutes of additional time reflected the intensity and stoppages during a fiercely contested second half, and both teams continued to give everything in pursuit of victory.

Mullinavat now turn their attention to the league final, where they will face Carrickshock, confident that the character shown in this dramatic victory will stand to them as they aim to bring home the league title.

Kilkenny made the brighter start, registering the opening score from play through Claire Doheny before adding a second point from Emma Mulhall to move two clear after just over four minutes.

Wexford responded in style a minute later when their midfielder Leah Furlong burst through the Kilkenny defence and found the back of the net with an excellent goal to put the hosts ahead.

Kilkenny will enter Saturday's championship clash with Waterford full of confidence as they aim to extend their flawless run this season. The Cats have been one of the standout teams in the competition, winning all five of their matches to date and establishing themselves as serious championship contenders.

A key factor in Kilkenny's success has been the scoring power of Aoife Prendergast, Sarah Barcoe and Asha McHardy. The trio has consistently delivered when it matters most, combining clinical finishing with excellent teamwork to keep Kilkenny's attack among the most dangerous in the championship.

Waterford, meanwhile, have battled through one of the toughest groups in the competition. Drawn alongside last year's four AllIreland semi-finalists, Cork, Galway and Tipperary, the Déise recorded an impressive opening victory over Tipperary (0-16 to 1-10) before suffering defeats to Galway (0-13 to 1-13) and Cork (0-10 to 1-13). They finished the group stage with one win from three outings.

Beth Carton, Annie Fitzgerald, Eimear O'Neill and Niamh Rockett have carried much of Waterford's scoring burden this year. However, Rockett is expected to miss Saturday's encounter after receiving a red card against Cork, a setback that weakens Waterford's attacking options.

With momentum firmly on their side, Kilkenny will be favourites to progress.

Their consistency, attacking quality and unbeaten record make them a formidable opponent. Waterford will need a near-perfect performance to halt the Cats' march, but Kilkenny will be determined to maintain their winning streak and continue their impressive championship campaign.
