Why you should make Christmas Day matter

BY THE EDITOR -------------------IN an age where we are increasingly cynical, the thinking goes that Christmas is at best a hijacked pagan orgy, that of Saturnalia, and at worst a humongous hybrid of religious conditioning and monetary manipulation.

Given the excesses in both celebration and in spending — for those who can afford it, that is — both arguments, arguably, stand up.

For me, Christmas runs deeper than mere religiosity or economic stimulation, its origins profound, sacred and etched in our very psyche, with enough magic to go round the world, making something special.

Why Christmas came to be an almost global phenomenon — even for people who never put foot inside a church — has to be understood in context. And the context — which does predate Christianity by tens of thousands of years — is that December kicks off winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

And for most of human history, for nearly all our ancestors, winter spelt out not just the doom and gloom of Seasonal Adjustment Disorder but the salient fact that many would not make it to the other side of the Winter Solstice. Would, in fact, die.

The darkest days of December past saw plunging temperatures that would chill the weakest and oldest to the grave and climate play havoc with hunters and gatherers, so it was, with so little fodder or warmth, in many ways the survival of the fittest.

This is mirrored in the birth of Jesus, the story of hope, of life, of renewal, of salvation.

Those of our ancestors who miraculously managed by fluke or by fortune to make it beyond December 21, that shortest of days and longest of nights, celebrated the survival of nearest and dearest EVERY FRIDAY

by feasting on what morsels they had managed to forage and celebrated like there was going to be no tomorrow. Life for our forefathers was brutish and short.

The ongoing pandemic aside, the majority of us, though by no means all contemporary humankind, are so detached from that notion today — when the cold means nothing more than mild annoyance and some-

times slippery roads — that it’s hard to grasp how recent this was, and that this was the way of all flesh for virtually all of human history.

Looking back at that scenario, even as recent as 150 years ago — little wonder Dickensian times are so entwined with many of the Christmas traditions still with us today — we can see how resilient we humans are: how innate is the struggle to survive, that

to live to the dawn of a New Year is cause for celebration, with a feast or festival, or just outright debauchery.

Such celebrations went by many names over the millennia, and everyone did it their own way, hence the variations on how Christmas throughout the world, even to the point that it is not necessarily on December 25.

Deep down, though, the message was, and is, always the

same: “We made it through another year, so let’s spend a few days reminding each other of what’s good about life.”

Against an unforgiving Cosmos since its inception, we have survived. And will will make it past this pandemic, despite the global suffering; we are an inherently heroic species that has spent about 99% of its lifetime in needful circumstance. And, if you see no Christmas cards telling you that, it’s not because it’s not true, but rather it’s because there’s little profit to be made telling you so.

Despite the history lesson here, Christmas isn’t special because of what it was or where it came from. It’s special because of what it still is: a gathering that might well be the last time you see the faces of loved ones you celebrate with.

That part of Christmas has not changed. There’s always the Empty Chair on this day of days, and more so since Covid-19 and its variants came among us.

This Christmas, statistically, some of you are, in fact, travelling to see your grandparents, or parents, or siblings for the very last time.

You don’t know it’s their last Christmas, of course — and, if you somehow could know, you’d maybe do it differently. You’d try to stretch out those moments, instead of losing in a haze of alcohol: you’d spend a little more time digging up and sharing old memories and laughing about your collective past.

You’d spend less time worrying about the gifts and the cost, and more about how we’re really spending the precious time we have with one another.

So as you gather with family and friends — those you love — this Christmas Day, celebrate it with this in mind: You don’t get many of these, so make them count.

At Christmas, think before you pour...

IT IS time to make sure the chimney is clear for the safe arrival of Santa, but that’s not all we have to keep clear this Christmas! This festive season, the Think Before You Pour campaign is partnering with Ireland’s well-known chefs, Kevin Dundon, Lilly Higgins, JP McMahon, Guy Sinnott, Mark Murphy and Edward Hayden to ask you to Think Before You Pour and put fats, oils and greases (FOGs) from the Christmas dinner in the bin.

Think Before You Pour is operated by Clean Coasts in partnership with Irish Water and appeals to the public not to pour FOGs down the kitchen sink, as a survey reveals that four out of 10 people admit to doing so.

Fats, oils and greases may seem like liquid when poured, but they cool and harden as they travel along the pipes and can cause blockages in our homes, businesses, the public sewer network and wastewater treatment plants and can even lead to overflows of sewage in our communities and pollution in rivers, on beaches and in the ocean. When FOGs combine with wipes and other sewage related litter such as hair and dental

floss that shouldn’t be flushed down the toilet, fatbergs can form.

Irish Water clears hundreds of blockages including fatbergs from the wastewater network every week.

Irish celebrity chef, television personality and author Kevin Dundon said: “This Christmas, I am delighted to be working with Clean Coasts and Irish Water on a great campaign to remind you to Think Before You Pour fats down the sink.

“As you all know, I love using fat while cooking, such as butter to baste a steak, turkey fat from the roasting tray or some duck fat on crispy roast potatoes. But, once served, pouring the residue left on the baking trays and pans down the sink will only end up creating blockages and giant fatbergs,” he said.

“My best advice is to let pans and trays cool for a few minutes and using kitchen paper, scrape the setting fat into a container and dispose of the fat in the general bin. It is a simple step that the family can do at home and help keep our pipes clearer. So this Christmas, use as much butter and cream in your recipes as desired and Think Before You Pour!”

Euthanasia ‘a risk to vulnerable’ THE introduction of assisted dying and euthanasia in Ireland would leave vulnerable patients at risk for reasons such as fear of being a burden, the body representing the country’s psychiatrists warned today.

A THIRD of Irish people will be taking to the roads this Christmas day to visit relatives according to new research by Allianz Ireland. However, one in 10 of those polled admitted that they take no safety precautions to protect their homes and belongings – leaving them vulnerable to burglaries.

A nationally representative online survey was conducted by Coyne Research amongst 1,000 adults found that among those who will be away at Christmas this year, about half will either double lock the front door or use an alarm to protect their home.

According to Allianz’s research, one in four Irish adults plan to spend between €500 and €1,000 on Christmas this year, shopping both in-store and online. When shopping in-store for valuable items there is always the risk of car theft, especially if the items are visible.

Despite seven in 10 Irish adults claiming they never leave anything visible in the car when they drop off their shopping, there is still as many as 16% of adults that admit they do not take any steps to protect their belongings when they are out Christmas shopping.

Data from An Garda Síochána shows that in a three-year period from 2016, more than €30 million worth of items were stolen from parked cars.

During the festive season, Allianz customers are being urged to take increased safety precautions to protect their valuable gifts this Christmas. To help, Allianz will automatically assume

strong opposition to assisted dying. It will be at the centre of major ‘right to die’ debate next year by a special Oireachtas committee set up to examine the Dying with Dignity Bill (2020).

“Euthanasia is frequently not a peaceful process and there are reports of prolongation of death for up to seven days and people reawakening from a coma.

St Luke’s busy for birthday It was a busy start to Christmas week at St Luke’s Hospital with at least 22 patients waiting on a bed.

As of Monday, December 20, there are 16 waiting on trolleys in the Emergency Department with six on other wards.

The facility was officially 80 last weekend having opened on 18th December 1941.

GOVERNMENT ministers are worried that closecontact rules will threaten the viability of businesses and frontline services as Omicron rapidly spreads.

Ministers raised concerns with Nphet over the rules that now require all close contacts of confirmed cases to restrict their movements for five days even if they have received a booster vaccine, or 10 days if they have not.

There is significant concern about how the rules will affect factories, warehouses and emergency services.

One senior minister said some sectors would need a derogation from the strict rules.

The Cabinet Committee on Covid-19 was warned there could be an estimated 10,000 new Covid cases a day from Christmas Eve onwards, and each of these people will have an average of 3.1 close contacts. This means around 41,000 people a day will be told to restrict their movements under the close-contact rules.

Official advice warns these people: “Do not go to work, unless you work on your own and can completely avoid other people.” They are also warned not to go to the shops or to school, use public transport, or have visitors at home.

The Government is concerned there will be a huge impact on frontline workers such as Gardaí, the fire brigade and local authorities.

Ministers also fear the new regime risks closing down some workplaces such as factories and warehouses where employees work in close proximity.

Environment Minister and Green Party leader Eamon Ryan already faced Christmas in isolation after contracting Covid-19. He has said he is at home following HSE protocols.

The Fact Of The Matter PAUL HOPKINS

We are hurtling towards, yet, another year It seems like it was only yesterday that I wrote elsewhere, Where did that year go, what with 2021 just upon us? Now, here I am again, wondering where the last 12 months went? I may not be any the wiser but I am, unfortunately, another year older and it seems, with each passing year, time flies at an alarming pace.

My wonderful daughter said to me recently regarding some topic or other, You know dad, in a years time I will be 40!

And I said, You know Niamh, I was 40 only yesterday...

Of course I was 40 a score and more years ago: it just seems like yesterday. And if you, dear reader, are of similar vintage you will know exactly what I mean.

When you are young, time passes quite slowly. Each birthday is a monumental occasion. Those long lazy summers of childhood seem

to never end. We, perhaps, remember trying to make the clock hands move faster with our minds as we sat bored in class. But as we grow older, life seems to speed up. Birthdays we’d sooner forget about, rather not notice them, as we feel like we’re hurtling towards old age. Why does it feel like this? Is time really moving faster somehow?

Research from the University of Kansas suggests a thorough study to understand this phenomenon, of time going faster as we get older. Scientists tested the theory, first proposed by the contemporary physicist and philosopher Douglas Hofstadter, that time appears to speed up because we start grouping distinct individual experiences into larger ‘chunks’, like all our Christmases into one. When we are young we have many big moments, experienced for the first time. So going to

a park can be quite a big deal, with many memorable sensations experienced. But, as you grow older, going to that park offers fewer and fewer new experiences. So, we start collapsing them into memory ‘chunks’, putting everything that happened simply under ‘a walk in the park’ — making that particular span of time feel brief. At least that’s Hofstadter’s contention.

The Kansas study involved 107 volunteers who were asked to compare how events of the past year measured up to events of other years. Some of them were encouraged to group together, or ‘chunk’, their experiences, others to write down how events could have turned out differently — going against the ‘chunking’ impulse. The chunking group found their previous year passed quicker than the other group did.

The researchers also asked

115 undergraduates to reflect on different daily activities either over the past day or the past year. Those who chose to ‘chunk’ the past year felt it had passed faster than those who ‘chunked’ the previous day.

Although I do my very best not to dwell on this inevitable aspect of life, I can imagine that, for many people of my vintage, perceiving life as rapidly slipping away can prove unpleasant and somewhat demotivating, psychologically harmful even which may in part explain mid-life depression for many people.

Or, at the very least, a sense of nostalgia for things gone by, to which I put my hands up.

If guilty on that front, I nonetheless endeavour to live life, each day, in the ‘moment’. A kind of mindfulness, if you like, which seems to be all the buzz at the moment.

Living ‘in the moment’

seems to allow me to appreciate such moments more fully, creating meaningful memories. At the end of the day, these days, and particularly with the pandemic, I find myself more often resensitised to the satisfaction

of the simple things life offers.

Spring was never so vibrant but autumn does, most days, seem richly gold. Increasingly, I find people are of abiding interest — observed on the street, overheard on the bus, down the pub of an evening.

Small pleasures have greater meaning now; that pint, the walk by the mill, my friend’s just published book of essays, my daughter’s phone call...

In their own way, such simple things counteract life’s quickening pace.

At the end of the day, middle and old age, and the attainment of such, should be laudably embraced, for it is that time of life denied so many throughout the world for whom death comes calling early.

That I have lived another year is a miracle in itself. May your New Year bring you all the good life has to offer.

Covid makes us a nation once again

BY CARMEL MULLANEY ----------------------------CHRISTMAS is one of the most special times of the year.

It is an opportunity to celebrate with our nearest and dearest, and a time of reunion after months of separation as a result of the pandemic.

This weekend, many of us will enjoy this much-needed distraction after one of the most challenging years of our lives.

The people of the South East region have well and truly led by example in the nation’s fight against this virus that has claimed so many lives, and has disrupted everyday society. The resilience and resolve of everyone in Kilkenny, Carlow, Tipperary, Waterford, and Wexford needs to be commended and remembered.

When we urged the public to adhere to unprecedented restrictions during the third wave, you listened and acted, breaking chains of transmission, and saved lives in your community as a result.

We stepped up to the task

when asked to register for our Covid-19 vaccines, and more than 90% of the adult population in the region signed up and got fully-vaccinated, saving so many lives once more. The production of a safe, effective vaccine of this scale and in such a short space of time is one of the greatest public health successes of our lifetime.

This success would not have become a reality without your collective response.

In addition to praising the actions of the public, I want to particularly mention our heroes on the frontline across all our public services, and the essential workers who kept crucial services open so we could all be safe and secure.

Two years of restrictions is a test of endurance we are not used to, but we all rose to the challenge, nonetheless.

We cannot deny the fatigue and frustration felt by everyone, and this is naturally compounded by a lot of uncertainty, particularly as we

closely watch the emergence of the Omicron variant of concern.

But despite this uncertainty, there is a lot we can do in our daily lives to stop this virus.

The basic public health measures work, and my team and I have seen this across all settings over the past 20 months.

These include wearing a face mask, maintaining a social distance, washing hands frequently, avoiding crowded areas, reducing social activity and contacts, and ventilating social and work spaces.

The Covid-19 vaccine and the booster programme has not only saved numerous lives in vulnerable settings, such as nursing homes and residential care facilities, but it has significantly reduced the number of cases and outbreaks in the community.

Breakthrough infections with serious outcomes can still occur, so it is essential that we avail of our booster shot as soon as possible.

Amid the current high level of disease circulating in the

community, and the emergence of the more easily transmitted Omicron variant, it is incumbent on us to ensure we look after others close to us. If you are feeling unwell, please do not socialise with others, isolate at home, and arrange a free PCR test immediately. If you have cold-like symptoms, a negative antigen test is not enough to rule out Covid-19.

Assume it is Covid-19, isolate, and get a PCR test.

As we reach the end of 2021, you should be proud of everything you did to protect yourself and loved ones around you. And while there will be further challenges down the line, we can look back with a sense of achievement, and look forward to what we can achieve together in 2022.

Restaurateur with Covid says ‘No’ to cert check

Suffer the little children as 100,000 on hospital waiting list ALMOST 100,000 children are now on waiting lists for specialist care which could have long-term consequences for their physical and mental health, a leading paediatrician has warned.

Dr Ike Okafor, a consultant in paediatric emergency medicine at Children’s Health Ireland at Temple Street, Dublin, said that a lack of access to paediatric and mental health specialists had led to children attending emergency wards across the public health system.

In a statement on behalf of the Irish Hospital Consultants Association (IHCA), he said that 97,387 children were currently on hospital waiting lists, with 37,725 waiting more than a year to receive care, including 27,725 who had been waiting for more than 18 months.

Among them were 2,948 children who were on waiting lists in September to be assessed by a psychiatric consultant with Child and Adolescent Mental

Health Services, which had marked a six-year high.

There are 843 children who have been waiting for more than six months while 195 have been waiting more than a year.

He also said that there had been a 9% increase in the number of children presenting at emergency departments at Dublin’s paediatric hospitals in a mental health crisis.

“The pandemic has led to a massive increase in children presenting with acute

mental health problems, especially eating disorders and self-harm.

“A system that was already under pressure, not just in hospitals, but in the community, has suddenly gone into crisis mode,” he said. “Children are waiting longer and longer to see psychologists and psychiatrists and that’s a problem.

“Historically children’s health hasn’t been adequately funded in this country. We’re playing catch-up.

“All stakeholders need to come together to make healthcare better, more accessible and more equitable,” he said.

Dr Okafor said a longer wait for children to be seen by a specialist only exacerbated the problem.

“Children’s care can’t wait.

No child should have to wait more than six weeks to get any kind of healthcare intervention.

“The longer they wait, the more protracted their condition actually becomes.

A WEXFORD restaurateur who had to temporarily close after refusing to check Covid certs has said he has now contracted coronoavirus himself.

Luigi Perri, who runs the The Forge Restaurant and Pizzeria in Castlebridge, also said he would not check certs when he reopened, despite catching the virus.

Mr Perri last month launched an online fundraising campaign to fight the HSE, which he said was bringing him to court for refusing to check customers’ Covid certs.

The campaign has already raised in excess of €17,500.

Mr Perri was recently hospitalised with Covid and had announced that the restaurant had had to temporarily close as a result.

He told the Sunday World that he would continue his policy of not checking Covid certs when he reopened.

Are New Year resolutions a mission impossible?

AS I SEE IT MARIANNE HERON

FOR several years now the only New Year resolution I have made is not to make one. It’s not that I can’t see the appeal of starting the year full of good intentions.

It’s all to do with making a fresh start once the Christmas festivities are over and focussing on the things that need attention in your life, a bit like starting a clean, new copy book.

The trouble is, though, that the shine on that newly minted promise to yourself wears off quickly when the resolution falls by the wayside as it generally does.

So why does this happen?

Before you start to beat yourself up for lack of will power, it’s good to recognise the difference between a goal and a resolution. A goal is something concrete with an aim that will benefit you, that has a measurable result, a time frame and definite steps that you need to take to achieve it. A resolution is much less defined and is often just a fluffy aspiration — like wanting to lose weight or get fit — likely to get lost in the jungle of life.

There are some things that make it far more likely that

you will succeed in reaching your target. Trick number one is to make a plan of action for achieving your goal. It makes it easier to manage, too, if you chunk it down into different steps, especially if it’s a challenging goal.

Writing your plan down is a surprisingly effective way

to make it stick. A survey carried out at Yale University came up with an interesting fact. Students where asked questions about various things like whether or not they set goals; only 10% had but they were 90% more successful than those who simply had aspirations.

Among those who had goals

the three percent who wrote their goals down were 90% more successful than the rest.

Why is writing your goal down so effective? It may be to do with having recorded a very definite destination and route like a map. As Yogi Berra observed: “If you don’t know where you are

going you end up someplace else.”

Visualisation adds another dimension to making what you have in mind come true. Sports coaches and athletes now recognise the benefits of mental rehearsal.

Thinking through the act without doing it physically helps both for skill learning

and sport where it has been found to help motivation and reduce anxiety. If you think you can do it you are more likely to do it. Could be why cookery programmes have such an appeal; if you see someone else doing whipping up a delicious dish successfully you are encouraged to believe you can do so, too, although my cakes never turn out quite like Mary Berry’s.

Having a gym buddy, a running mate or joining a group not only makes some goals like fitness and weight loss more fun, adding an element of competition, but it makes you accountable to others. It can also help avoid excuses and giving up, say when you have made a mistake (rather than calling it a learning experience) or procrastinating, (putting stuff off can involve more mental stress than actually doing the thing! ) When starting out in pursuit of a goal I like to remember that bit in Alice In Wonderland where Alice asks the Cheshire Cat which way she should go and the cat says that it depends where she wants to go. Alice doesn’t know so the cat replies, then it doesn’t matter which way you go. If you know where you want to go with your goal there’s a much better chance of getting there.

HYPNOTHERAPY is powerful. Don’t take my word for it, research it online for yourself. There is a huge amount of good scientific evidence to demonstrate the effectiveness of hypnosis as a treatment.

Actually, perhaps a better way of putting it would be the subconscious mind is positively herculean compared to the conscious state. By communicating with the former, hypnotherapy uses your own incredible strength and willpower to bring positive changes which quite literally change your life.

Maybe the strongest example is when someone is suffering an addiction.

Addictive behaviour is habitual. Smoking tobacco, drinking, at least if you struggle with alcohol, overeating the wrong foods, very few of these involve conscious effort. If you’re a smoker, I guarantee you’ve experienced the phenomena of finding yourself sucking on a cigarette and not knowing how it found

its way to your mouth. The same with supping on a pint or gorging on chocolate. That’s because your subconscious mind takes over when performing habits and that is a major reason why it’s so hard to stop. Your conscious wants to quit but hasn’t communicated this desire to your subconscious. Hypnotherapy is arguably the most effective way of doing that, getting the two parts of your mind to talk to each other so what you consciously want to do becomes subconscious habit.

From this idea we can easily understand why hypnotherapy is also hugely beneficial to people who want to lose weight, and perhaps most importantly keep those pounds off. Eating is habitual. Consuming poor quality, fattening foods is a habit. Your conscious mind might want you to be slimmer but if your subconscious doesn’t know this, you’re basically going to war with yourself.

The same concept applies to exercise. Finding the motivation to start running, cycling, swimming or doing another vigorous activity and the commitment to keep going is tough.

Particularly in this coun-

try where we’re blessed with some pretty miserable weather at times.

Again, you need your subconscious fighting in your corner and, to do this, you need to talk to it.

Other areas of life which people struggle with are also habitual. Stress, although often caused by external factors, is something we can learn to deal with more effectively. Typically, this involves developing more objective thinking patterns. The problem is we need to do this habitually, automatically, for it to have the best effect.

Sleep is the same. The way we view bedtime, how we prepare ourselves for bed and our thought processes when our heads are on the pillow are deeply habitual.

Hypnotherapy offers huge life benefits in a massive variety of ways. Far too many to list here. The most important thing to know is that it works by getting your conscious mind to communicate with your far more powerful subconscious. From there, desires become habits and change is then natural and infinitely easier. Your subconscious wants to help you, you just need to tell it what you want.

News IN recent months, a six-hour Facebook outage provided an interesting example of our complex relationship with social media platforms and the hugely powerful companies behind them. Users the world over were up in arms and their frustrations over the lack of access (and what might have caused it), made global headline news.

One thing was clear: we spend far more time posting, checking and scrolling on those platforms than most of us would like to admit.

Social media and gaming platforms are a vastly powerful industry and we, their users, are very invested in them, in terms of our time and attention.

They are a source of entertainment, fun and are an important element of our socialising. The Child Mind Institute’s 2019 ‘Children’s Mental Health Report’ found that 81% of teens surveyed said that social media makes them feel more connected to their friends. That was before COVID lockdowns significantly increased our reliance on it.

But there is a darker side to all of this too, as the recent Facebook whistleblower revelations about negative impacts on children’s wellbeing, highlighted.

These revelations followed the publication of joint research carried out by the 5Rights Foundation, which showed how the design of these platforms is putting children at risk.

It provided evidence that design features are deliberately developed to increase time spent online, to target child accounts with harmful content (such as pornography and proanorexia material) and to deliver to them unsolicited messages and requests from strangers.

Who is accountable when things go wrong for a child, or indeed any user, on an online platform? Is it the parents who let their children use these services without adequate supervision and sometimes before they are of the right age? The Government? The big tech companies that own them? Well, as is often the case, the responsibility lies with all of the above. But one of those groups is profiting far more from children being online than the others.

As it stands, all of the big tech companies have ‘community standards’ in place, which are

That’s great in practice but the policing of such standards has proven to be inconsistent and existing safeguards are possible to circumnavigate.

To my mind, this means that

these companies essentially dance to their own tune. That has got to change. It’s at least two years since our own Government said that the “era of self-regulation is over” (2019) and yet, that model is the one that persists.

Change, however, is on the horizon. We have the eagerly anticipated ‘Online Safety & Media Regulation’ bill coming down the tracks. Having completed its extensive pre-legislative scrutiny, the Joint Oireachtas Committee has published its

report and the findings are encouraging. As members of the Children’s Rights Alliance ‘123 Online Safety Campaign’ we have been lobbying for significant changes that will serve to substantially strengthen what is essentially a weak bill. Crucially,

the recommendations include the setting up of an individual complaints mechanism, which will provide an important safety net for those users who have incurred harm online, specifically in the event that the online services have failed to provide that support themselves.

As part of its online safety campaign, the Children’s Rights Alliance has sought to ask the public what they expect from this upcoming bill and the results were encouraging to those of us that want to see more responsibility placed on the shoulders of the online platforms in terms of harmful content that they host.

A thousand adults were surveyed and the vast majority (91%) felt that big tech companies use their power and influence in a way that benefits themselves (and this research was gathered before the Wall Street Journal got their scoop from Frances Haughen). Up to 69% felt that they should deliberately block children from accessing content that could harm them.

A total of 72% felt that penalties should be introduced that would encourage social media companies to stop harmful or illegal content on their platforms and 70% felt that the Government should introduce laws that hold big tech and social media companies responsible for the content they allow on their platforms.

And with regards to that important question of whether or not the proposed Online Safety Commissioner should have the powers to investigate complaints made by the public when social media companies fail to uphold the rights of the individual, there was also clear support from the public with 77% of those surveyed in favour and a further 78% in favour of financial penalties for those companies that fail to comply.

As host to a number of the EMEA headquarters for larger platforms like Google, Facebook, TikTok and Twitter, Ireland should be leading the way. Regulation is coming and is clearly much needed, but we must make sure that accountability is put in all the right places because at the end of the day, only then will it become the vital safety net it needs to be. www.cybersafekids.ie

Hi Digital platform and digital literacy awareness THE importance of digital literacy has become very apparent in the past two years and according to research conducted by Vodafone Ireland Foundation, a quarter (25%) of the Irish public say their older relatives’ digital skills are poor or very poor. It was also found that 79% agreed they would feel more connected to their older relatives if their digital skills were improved.

Hi Digital, developed by Vodafone Ireland Foundation, alongside Active Retirement Ireland and ALONE, is an online learning platform aimed at those over the age of 65. Hi Digital provides bite-size lessons organised around key digi-

tal themes, including the basics of internet access and how to use online devices; an essential

guide to apps and features that can enhance daily life and combat isolation.

In Ireland, digital literacy levels of those over 65 years old are among the lowest in Europe. The pandemic has exacerbated this problem as it saw more communities and services move online at an unprecedented rate. As well as an ability to connect to essential services, a lack of digital skills can lead to isolation. A total of 79% of those polled agreed they would feel more connected to their older relatives if they had the ability to use digital technology such as a smartphone or tablet, allowing generations to connect and share experiences.

The Hi Digital platform has been created for beginners and

supports self-learners as well as those helping older people get online through its mentor guide. With 86% of those surveyed willing to mentor an older relative or friend on digital skills, the festive season marks the perfect time to make a start as families gather over the coming weeks.

Helping raise awareness of Hi Digital this Christmas are Pat Corcoran, affectionately known as Nanny Pat, and Tom Cullen (pictured) who captured the nations hearts during their appearance on The Late Late Toy Show in 2019. The following year, after the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic, Nanny Pat joined Ryan Tubridy once

more on the Late Late Show via Skype, much to Tom’s surprise.

Speaking on the initiative, Nanny Pat said “It is easy to become isolated during these difficult times and being able to connect with my family and friends online has made a huge difference. Getting better with technology can seem like a big hill to climb but learning skills bit by bit has helped me and of course, my family are always here to support whenever they can. Hi Digital is a great initiative.”

Get between the covers this Christmas

MONEY sense isn’t necessarily about what you know.

It’s about your behaviour and it’s difficult to teach. Personal finance and business decisions are typically taught using formulae graphs and excel sheets to tell us what you should do. But in reality people don’t make financial decisions logically. Fear, greed, ego, pride, our own worldview are the underlining unfelt unrecognised drivers of many of our decisions.

For this column I was researching last minute book buys for Christmas with a financial bent. So many just drive our fears and needs and are openly greed driven. So, what I though was let’s look at a few good books that would be worth reading over the festive period and not all unashamedly financial.

The intelligent Investor – Benjamin Graham’s book, the stock market bible ever since its original publication has sold millions of copies. First published in 1949 it has stood the test of time. His philosophy is “value investing” which protects us from substantial

error and teaches how to develop long-term strategies.

Over the years, market developments have proven the wisdom of Graham’s strategies. There is a current edition with the classic text annotated to update Graham’s timeless wisdom for today’s market conditions by noted financial journalist Jason Zweig, whose perspective “incorporates the realities of today’s market,

drawing parallels between Graham’s examples and today’s financial headlines giving readers a more thorough understanding of how to apply Graham’s principles”.

According to Harper Business Essentials edition, the Intelligent Investor is the most important book you will ever read on how to reach your financial goals.

The Psychology of Money.

The award-winning author Morgan Housel shares timeless lessons on wealth, greed, and happiness. In 19 short stories he explores the strange ways people think about money and teaches you how to make better sense of one of life’s most important topics.

So often though, having been encouraged by what we read we set out our financial

goals but often we become waylaid as time goes on. But, according to John Kay the author of ‘Obliquity’, if you want to go in one direction, the best route may actually involve going in another.

Paradoxical as it sounds, according to the author, many goals are more likely to be achieved when pursued indirectly. The richest men and women are not the most materialistic; the happiest people are not necessarily those who focus on happiness, and the most profitable companies are not always the most profit oriented.

Whatever the obstacles, the battles, or goals to be achieved history shows that oblique approaches are the most successful, especially in times of difficulty. The author lays out his premise in an entertaining and challenging way.

With the New Year looming and the January blues invariable approaching it’s the time we usually make new year resolutions. But so often, by the second week of January, we have succumbed to our old selves once again.

“If you’re having trouble changing your habits, the problem isn’t you, the problem is your system,” says James Clear the author of Atomic Habits. He is one of the world’s leading experts on

habit formation. He says “bad habits” repeat themselves again and again not because you don’t want to change, but because you have the wrong system for change; “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”

In this book you’ll get a proven system that will teach you exactly how to form good habits, break bad ones, and master the tiny behaviours that lead to remarkable results that can take you to new heights.

Finally, A Christmas Carol, a tale of transformation, first published in December 1843 by Charles Dickens, of Ebenezer Scrooge. An old miser who detests Christmas, whose mind and soul has been warped by the pursuit of money above all other things.

This -book was written at a time when Christmas traditions were in steady decline in England. It was seen as a major turning point in helping ensure that family unity and ‘goodwill to all men’ once more became the appropriate sentiments of the Christmas season.

A story that can not be told HE had gone to Scarin, a rundown area outside the north east gate to meet Al Fer Arco a Syrian who worked for the Romans. His hopes were that he could gather information about the upcoming census that was to be taken. Al Fer Arco was a census taker and he hoped that the information gained from Al Fer Arco would help lay to rest some of the rumours and gossip that were circulating the market places. As a Scribe and Announcer in the market places part of his duties were to end any gossip or rumours that the Romans feared might cause unrest. Some of the rumours doing the rounds now related to a new city being built, a new King being born or a new Kingdom being created and with the influx of citizens from all reaches of the lands there was also talk of famine, war or plague.

They had met in an Inn owned by Palini a Jew who was known for his generosity and acts of kindness.

Having been assured by the Syrian that the census was only a record keeping exercise by the Romans to help calculate tax receipts and to establish a count of able bodied young men who could be expected to take up arms, he left through the back.

As he walked across the yard he first noticed the fawn and white stallion that stood alert and pawing at the dirt with its front hoofs.

Its coat was shining in the sunlight and it looked a splendid animal, but it was only about two thirds the size

of the horses used by the Romans. It was surrounded by about twenty horse riders who looked more like a raiding party than traders.

As he moved closer to investigate he noticed the Shepherds who appeared to be drunk, embracing each other, laughing and cheering. As he moved through them he was confronted by a very tall person with white hair who spoke to him in a strange language that he was able to understand. ”He is born” he said and then continued to walk on by.

He looked towards a cave that had been cut out of the surrounding stone and was usually used to house live-

stock. Nearby the entrance stood a highly decorated carriage which was pulled by six oxen, around it stood both male and female servants, the men standing to the front appeared to be bodyguards although they were not armed.

A little drummer boy was marching up and down beating a tattoo on his drum.

The boy wore the colours of Herod’s third Battalion and the tattoo he played was “go forward in triumph” While following his march his eyes came to rest on a group of men, each had their heads shaved and they all

wore an orange robe. They all stood motionless heads bowed.

At this stage he had moved enough to be able to see inside the cave. A family was gathered in the back right hand corner. A father, mother and new born infant. He first noticed the child’s face, how radiant it was, it was then he knew.

The mother was beautiful, the father held his cloak over his family protectively, eyes darting from person to person as if expecting danger from every angle.

Again a white haired person spoke “He is born glory to God the most high”.

It was as he turned to see who spoke that he saw

the olive green coloured skin of a reptile looking being, which partly hid their identity under a purple coloured hooded cloak. His skin crawled. Seven of the white haired people appeared to be shielding and steering it away from the cave. He knew he had an amazing story to tell and tell it he would.

But now as he sat at his table among the other scribes he could not write.

He could not form words to tell his story. The story was clear in his head from beginning to end, but the end had not happened yet and would not for many years but he knew it so well. He could not, must not write of it now. He must monitor and observe this story as it happens and he must be there at the end to record it. Then he would be able to write. He would find the sentence to begin. To start he must wait for the Word.

A SEASONAL SHORT STORY BY PAUL HOPKINS

I

had thought about it for, I guess, the best part of a day, mulled over it, slept on it, my baby brother rabbiting the head off himself in his bed opposite me. My plan was to burrow my way to the back of the huge stand-alone wardrobe in my parents’ bedroom.

The planning needed skillful setting up, exact execution, perfect timing and precise action. Fierce, in fact. But, I figured, now that I was going on 11 years old and all, that I had the wherewithal to make my mission a success and find out if my suspicions were, after all, and sadly, correct.

The truth about Santa Claus.

If I was right, and my mission a success, there would be huge ramifications ( I had to look that word up) for the whole world and, most importantly, for all the world’s children. Trillions of them, most like.

My father was away working, on the trains; sorting out the letters and cards for people from other people all over the world. Mostly their relations, sometimes old neighbours or childhood friends. Letters written once or twice a year, my father had told me, or for special occasions or when bad news happened like someone had died or someone’s cow had fallen down a bog or whatever. But there were lots and lots of letters, lots too at Christmas time were ‘registered’, with money orders in them, from places in England like Birmingham and Coventry or America and Boston and California. Sometimes Sydney or Toronto or sometimes from a sister who had became a nun and had gone off to teach the Black babies in far-away Africa.

Anyways, my father would be working away on the trains, sorting out the mail to make sure the letters for Galway got to Galway and the ones for Sligo got to Sligo. My mother said he was very good at his job, so I guess he was.

more stuff for Christmas. It was the only time she had, she told me. She took my little sister with her — she was only four — but left my little brother with me. I was in charge. That was a given, as I was nearly 11 and all. It was easy too. If he didn’t behave I just gave him a thump, and that was that.

I had warned my little brother to stay downstairs, with the cat, “or else”, and I headed off on my mission, armed with my flashlight and a a packet of Chew-its in case I got hungry while on the job.

I climbed the stairs and my heart was heavy. Heavy, because I suspected my mission deep into the back of

my parents’ wardrobe would only prove my suspicions right. It had been about a week before that my mother was returning from yet another visit to town with my little sister in tow, steady on her baby reins.I heard them come up the garden path, and I quickly replaced the cushions on the good couch

in the good room where my brother and I had been playing the Lone Ranger, he was Tonto and I had tied him up with the chord from my father’s dressing gown.

My brother and I collapsed at the front door as my mother put the key in, saying, Come on boys move, let us get in...

She was laden down with bags from Clery’s and Guiney’s and other places and it was then that I saw it. At least I thought I saw it.

about to say something but something stopped me in my tracks and I just kept shtum. I looked again but there nothing there.

Let me just put away some things, my mother said, and then we’ll get the tea. And she scurried upstairs, and there was a lot of commotion and doors banging, doors of the big stand-alone wardrobe in my parents’ room. And then she came back down, her face all flushed, her big coat still on.

A banana or boiled egg, she said.

Crisps, we said.

I opened the large doors of my parents stand-alone wardrobe, and one of them swung too far and hit me on the forehead. Ouch, I muttered, as I switched on my sturdy flashlight and made my way along the short distance to the back of the musky recess which wasn’t easy as I was now lanky — and awkward, my mother said — because I was nearly 11 and all and their were shoes and and old handbag and some coat hangers that had fallen down and a tattered cardboard box. On my way to the back of the wardrobe I came upon my old and only teddy, Michael, lying there, forlorn, inert and no longer loved nor needed. Hmm, I said, what a naft kid, and looked at Michael, one of his glass eyes

now missing, and tossed him back on top of an old patent leather slingback shoe that once was my mother’s.

But there was no Treasure Island! No haha me hardies, as my sturdy flashlight shone on just a large empty bag in which stood nothing.

Santa better bring me my X-Air Space. He just better .There would be slaughter everywhere on Christmas Day. Everywhere. No one would escape. Not even my little brother. It would definitely be oxo for him.

He’d see.

So, I thought, leaning back on my hunkers and looked at a bruised knee, Vincent Osbourne was wrong all along. There is a Santa Claus. A fat guy in a red suit speeding around the

world like a maniac, like the Six Billion Dollar gobshite, giving mad presents to mad kids he doesn’t even know.

Great stuff, I cried.

Hey Chubbs, I shouted at my bother as I galloped HiHo Silver down the stairs.

Santa is for real, I yelled. It was the best news. I mean what would Christmas be like if, silly-billy, there was no Santa Clause, no fat guy in a red suit going around the world like a mad eejit given snotty-nosed kids a load of geezer gifts like my Air Space Gun SR2 or dolls called Sylvia? I mean, it didn’t bear thinking about, the global fall-out from such a disclosure. The stock markets plummeting.

Those Cuban missiles going berserk. Or even the introduction of some daft thing called social distancing. The ramifications were unimaginable, if there were no Santa Claus.

So, there was a Santa.

That figured. Besides, I reckoned that day that I had at least another two years of believing in the fat guy and that, my young heart reasoned, was definitely to my advantage.

Christmas Day that year, there wasn’t a body left standing when Santa brought me my gun. Not even my brother. And I loved him. Though I’d never let on.

Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how

dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus!

You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa

Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus.

The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen

world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever.

A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

The story behind that letter which has touched so many IN 1897, Philip O’Hanlon, a coroner’s assistant on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, was asked by his then eight-year-old daughter, Virginia O’Hanlon (1889–1971), whether Santa Claus really existed. O’Hanlon suggested she write to The Sun, a then prominent New York City newspaper, assuring her: “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.”

In so doing, O’Hanlon had unwittingly given one of the paper’s editors, Francis Pharcellus Church, an opportunity to rise above the simple question and address the philosophical issues behind it.

Church was a war correspondent during the American Civil War, a time that saw great suffering and a corresponding lack of hope and faith in much of society.

Although the paper ran the editorial in the seventh place on the page, below even one on the newly invented ‘chainless bicycle’, it was both noticed and well received by readers. According to an anecdote on the radio programme The Rest of the Story, Church was a hardened cynic and an atheist who had little patience for superstitious beliefs, did not want to write the editorial, and refused to allow his name to be attached to the piece. More than a century later it is the most reprinted editorial in any newspaper in the English language.

In 1971, after seeing Virginia’s obituary in The New York Times, four friends formed a company called Elizabeth Press and published a children’s book titled Yes, Virginia that illustrated the editorial and included a brief history of the main characters. Its creators took it to Warner Brothers, who made an Emmy award-winning

television show based on the editorial in 1974.

The History Channel, in a special that broadcast on February 21, 2001, noted that Virginia gave the original letter to a granddaughter, who pasted it in a scrapbook. It was feared that the letter was destroyed in a house fire but, 30 years later, it was discovered intact.

A copy of the letter, handwritten by Virginia and be-

lieved by her family to be the original, returned to them by the newspaper, was authenticated in 1998 by Kathleen Guzman, an appraiser on the television programme Antiques Roadshow.

In 2007, the show appraised its value at around $50,000.

A commemorative plaque celebrating O’Hanlon and her letter was added to the building, now a school, where Virginia O’Hanlon

lived when the letter was written. The plaque was dedicated at a ceremony attended by three generations of O’Hanlon’s family.

Every year, Virginia’s letter and Church’s response are read at the Yule log ceremony at Church’s alma mater, Columbia University.

The story of Virginia’s inquiry and The Sun’s response was adapted in 1932 into an NBC-produced cantata (the

only known editorial set to classical music), a segment of the short film Santa Claus Story (1945), and an Emmy Award-winning animated television special aired in 1974 on ABC, animated by Bill Melendez (who had worked on various Peanuts specials).

The movie was a highly fictionalised account. Charles Bronson in 1991 starred in a TV movie based on the letter. In 1996, the story was adapted into an eponymous holiday musical by David Kirchenbaum (music and lyrics) and Myles McDonnel (book).

In 1954, American country singer and actor, Tex Ritter released a single called Is There A Santa Claus? about ‘little’ Virginia’s letter and then narrates Francis Church’s response.

The last two paragraphs of Church’s editorial are read by Sam Elliott in the 1989 film Prancer, about Jessica Riggs, a little girl who believes the wounded reindeer she is nursing back to health belongs to Santa. Jessica’s story inspires the local newspaper editor, as Virginia’s letter did to Church, to write an editorial which he titles Yes, Santa,

There Is A Virginia.

On September 21, anni1997, the 100th anni versary of the editorial’s original publication, The New York Times published an analysis of its enduring appeal.

In 2003, ‘Yes, VirVir ginia, there is a Santa Claus’ was depicted in a mechanical holiholi day window display at the Lord & Taylor department store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

Virginia continues to inspire generations of young students at The Studio School, a New York City private school located in the building where Virginia grew up and penned her letter. The curiosity in Virginia’s letter, and her dedication to education later in life, have rendered her a guiding figure in school lore. Students read and discuss her letter annually, and have written and performed plays about the young girl’s life.

In 2009, Janet C. Rotter, Head of School, announced the establishment of the Virginia O’Hanlon Scholarship Fund, speaking passionately about the school’s commitment to offering need-based scholarships for students of merit. The fund continues to grow and accept donations.

“Yes, Virginia, there is (a)...” has become an idiomatic expression to insist that something is true.

In December 2015, Macy’s department store in Herald Square, New York City, used Virginia’s story for their holiday window display, illustrated in three-dimensional figurines and spanning several windows on the south side of the store along 34th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues.

Sheltering from the Storm This week marks the final week in our series of Christmas Short stories and The Kilkenny Observer is delighted to welcome Patrick Griffin A REIMAGINING OF THE CHRISTMAS STORY

BY PATRICK GRIFFIN There was no question about the quality of the table in my workshop.

“You are an exceptional carver of wood,” my customer said.

I watched him as he circled the table and ran his fingers over the highly polished surface. He knelt down and peered beneath the table top as if he were examining the joints, the carving and the very soul of the wood itself.

“I wish I could say that indeed it was my workmanship, but it was made by someone who was here only for a short while,” I replied.

“Do you have more pieces by the craftsman who made this?” my customer asked.

I told him that it was the only piece of its kind that I had.

“It’s a pity. Such a pity,” he said. “He certainly is talented.”

Again he walked around the table. Occasionally he stopped and peered at a joint, pondered over a place where the leg joined the table

top and muttered “Exceptional, exceptional.”

He looked at me and said, “Where can I contact him?

I would like to commission him to make something for me.”

I told him I had no idea who the craftsman was, only that he had made the table for me in return for a small favour.

“He arrived on an evening like this,” I told him, “bitter weather with the promise of worse to come. My wife was preparing supper while I counted the meagre few coins I had earned that day. I had locked up for the night when I heard a banging on the door.

I was tired and for a moment I considered ignoring the incessant hammering of fist against wood. When it continued to the point where I could leave it no longer, I slid open the bolt and saw a

young man, huddled against the doorpost. He looked tired and bedraggled.”

“I apologise for calling on you at such a late hour. I could smell the wood chips and the sawdust. My line of business” the stranger said to me. “My wife and I didn’t plan our journey well. We are hoping to stay somewhere until this storm blows over. I have little money, but I could do some work as compensa-

tion.”

I was in no humour to hold a casual conversation with a complete stranger. My first instinct was to dismiss him, shut the door to keep out the howling wind and retreat to the warmth of my bed.

A young woman stood shivering behind him. With her clothes pulled tightly around her it was obvious that she was highly pregnant. She’s only a girl, hardly more than a child, I thought. It would be heartless of me to turn them away, certainly not on a night like this.

“Just for tonight,” I said.

“I will repay you,” he smiled. “Let me be useful in your workshop.”

I assured him that I needed nothing and I led them to a room which was nothing more than a store at the back of our humble dwelling. I pulled some blankets from a chest and wished them a good night’s sleep.

On the following morning I made my way to my workshop and saw the young girl tidying my workbench and the young man working on an item of furniture.

“Forgive me,” he said. “But I had to repay your kindness in some way. I found some planks of cedar stacked against the wall.”

I looked at the piece of work he was sanding.

“That’s a fine table,” I commented. “You know how to work wood. Where did you learn your craft?”

“It was a family trade,” he said. “There are a few other items I could finish for you, in return for another night’s stay here, at least until the storm blows over.”

“Your wife,” I said, “she is near her time? Your first child?”

“Yes,” he smiled.

“Until the storm blows over,” I said.

For two days we worked side by side but very few words passed between us.

On the morning of the third day the storm had passed. I arose early, as was my habit, and I went to my workshop, but the sounds of the saw and hammer were not to be heard. The workshop was tidy. The table was finished.

The travellers had gone.

“That was the last I saw of them,” I said to my customer.

“No. I am wrong. I did see them one more time. They were returning this way to their own town. It was some time, maybe even a year after the census.”

“Ah, yes, that census,” he said.

“They stopped here to thank me again” I continued.

“Their child, a little boy, was with them.”

“And you never heard from them again? he asked.

“No. It’s strange that I never asked them their names. I do remember one thing about them. They named the boy Joshua. They passed into obscurity. And just like the rest of us, it’s unlikely anybody will remember them a hundred years from now.”

Another great weekend on the Yulefest Bandstand

THE Yulefest Bandstand played host to more great acts this weekend to kick off Christmas week in Kilkenny. With Yulefest making a special appearance

on RTÉ One’s Nationwide on Friday, where the city was showcased beautifully, there was definitely an extra buzz about the place as more

people came to check out the festivities for themselves.

On Friday

the Rogu Fire Performers took over the Parade and put on a spectacular performance of their show ‘Embers’. ROGU’s Embers honours the union of two loved ones as it brings the audience on a journey to burn away what came before in preparation for what is to come. By bringing the spectacular nature of circus and fire performance together with the illusions of magic and object manipulation along with theatrical expression, ROGU created a spellbinding performance. The performance wowed the audience gathered on the Parade. Anca. S. Ganea commented on Facebook that “The event was incredible” Saturday was another busy day in the city with the Yulefest Christmas Market gaining a lot of footfall and some really class acts playing on the Yulefest Bandstand.

Children were treated to entertainment by Monsieur Gusto to start off the day.

Bold As Brass took over the reins next and Sola finished out the morning with a beautiful performance.

The morning ensembles were followed by all-out

family affairs for the Saturday afternoon and evening performances.

First up was Burnchurch, made up of Na Casadaigh Óga from Burnchurch in Kilkenny. All young siblings and performing original music the crowd were amazed by their talent as people were overheard exclaiming “they’re all one family” and “She wrote that during her leaving cert” with disbelief.

Continuing with the family theme, the day concluded with a performance by world-class violinist Patrick Rafter accompanied by his parents Maura Duggan Rafter and Paddy Rafter with an additional special guest appearance by young brother Alexander Rafter. Playing a mixture of classical and Christmas tunes and songs, the family delighted the crowds and played out another great evening at Yulefest Kilkenny.

Sunday saw the young talent of Music Generation, who were also featured on Nationwide on Friday, show off their Christmas cheer with festive hats and Christmas tunes. This was a great opportunity for these young performers to get a taste of the big stage.

Next up were local band, The Screws, who despite a power outage kept the show going and even got the crowd involved in a singalong. They finished up their set with the song ‘Violet’ which also closes out their EP ‘Take Vienna’ which they released this year and is available on Spotify now.

Once darkness fell the city

got even busier as everyone came out to enjoy the twinkle of Christmas lights and the magic of the market.

The Carlow Voices Choir brought back the Christmas songs and the evening concluded with the Leonard Barry Trio who entertained those who hadn’t yet taken shelter from the cold. A great set of traditional tunes followed, as the queue at the Crepe Station still stretched along the Parade, almost an hour after closing time.

The Yulefest Bandstand continues until Thursday, with the Sofa Sessions taking over the Yulefest Bandstand at 7pm each evening, with the last performance by Jimmy Smyth’s Xmas Organised tonight (22nd) at 7pm on the Yulefest Bandstand.

The Yulefest Bandstand is supported by the Local Live Performance Scheme and Kilkenny Arts Office. Speaking about the Bandstand, Kilkenny Arts Officer Mary Butler said “it has been a huge success and given many local musicians an opportunity to play for new audiences. Times are still tough in the arts and culture sector and we are grateful to all those who performed and thankful to those that made the effort to come out and support the acts.

The musical talent in Kilkenny is second to none and long may it continue.”

Now is the time to apply for local Arts grants KILKENNY County Council Arts Office has announced its callout for applications for their Arts Act Grant 2022 The 2003 Arts Act permits a local authority to provide financial assistance for the purposes of stimulating public interest in the arts,

promoting the knowledge, appreciation and practices of the arts or improving standards in the arts.

Speaking on the National Dairy Council podcast (https://www.buzz sprout.com/1839492/ 9626383), Dairy Matters, they described the Irish product as the “grand cru of milk” – saying it’s the best in the world and that it should be recognised as such.

“We don’t think our farmers are valued enough in this country. It’s like we see the bottle of milk in the fridge and we don’t really think about it – it’s just always been there.

“There is a perception that farmers don’t really think about the land, but it’s so misguided because when you start to talk and start to meet farmers, you realise that these people are scientists, they are environmentalists, they understand water, they understand animals. They are fantastic people and I think that we should have more faith in them.”

The McKennas were guests on the National Dairy

Council’s new podcast series to talk about their lifelong love of food, their passion for Ireland’s incredible food producers, and how their book ‘Milk’ explores the emotional relationship the Irish have with dairy farming through recipes, culture and history.

According to recent research from the NDC, 79% of people believe Ireland’s 18,000 family dairy farms are thinking about the environment and three-quarters still believe that Irish, grassfed dairy is amongst the best in the world (NDC research September 2021) Dairy Matters is a new podcast series produced on behalf of the National Dairy Council which gets to the heart of Irish dairy farming, the people involved and the fantastic food they produce.

Upskilling in digital-marketing can be springboard to success WATERFORD’S Institute of Technology (WIT) is calling on employers in Kilkenny to support their staff in availing of the online Springboard Postgraduate Diploma in Digital Marketing Practice.

The part-time online programme which is delivered online on Thursdays from 2.00 – 8.00 pm starting on 20 January 2022.

Course leader, Dr Paul Morrissey, is delighted with the response to the course from businesses across the South East.

“We’re now into our fourth cycle of the PGDip in Digital Marketing Practice. With so much marketing activity now moved

online we’ve had massive interest in the course from businesses across the South East. We’re talking to them constantly and the feedback has been very positive,” he told The Kilkenny Observer.

Springboard+ is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Social Fund as part of the ESF programme or Employability, Inclusion and Learning 2014-2020.

Springboard courses that are scheduled to start at WIT in January are: a Cert in Automation Engineering, the online Postgraduate Diploma in Digital Marketing Practice, the online Higher Diploma

in Science in Computer Science, online Higher Diploma in Business Systems Analysis.

In addition there are a number of other courses starting in January that are useful for the workplace include: the 12 week Certificate in Human Resource Management and Certificate in Project Management courses and the eight-week Payroll and Computerised Accounts course.

In addition WIT runs 12-week Digital Marketing and Social Media and Introduction to Radio Broadcasting and Presenting courses.

The institute runs a

number of courses aimed at nursing healthcare professionals. It also has two courses for music lovers and music teachers: Keyboard Skills Module and Western Art Music: Baroque to Mid-20th Century.

Time now for farmers to think about spring fertiliser and slurry NOW is the time for farmers to plan for next spring’s fertiliser and slurry applications.

There are three things you can do on your farm straight away. * Get your farm soil sampled – this should be done three months since your last slurry

and P & K fertiliser application. * Spread lime – this is the cheapest fertiliser available, will release nitrogen in the soil and improve your NUE next year. * Spread Potash – Potash can be spread any time of the year but now is the perfect time

to build up indexes to avoid luxury uptake of K. A fourth thing that you can do on your farm next spring is to get your slurry tested. This can be done by taking an agitated slurry sample from your tanker and sending it to the lab to be tested. The benefits of

getting your slurry tested are: * Tell you the N/P/K value of your slurry *Reduce the amount of chemical fertilizer you spread Avoid overspreading slurry which can prevent issues such as milk fever and grass tetany A project was completed in

the Kilkenny/Waterford area in 2021 where 48 farmers got their slurry tested. The key finding from the project was that there was hugh variation in the slurry results depending on the percentage of dry matter.

Kilkenny values came in

much higher than originally expected.

Teagasc reference figure for standard slurry is 6-5-30 compared to projects 6-5-41.

Farmers should aim to have 60 units of nitrogen (including slurry nitrogen) out by April 1 next.

Meet Kilkenny Cats from one thousand years of history WE have heard it over and over again.

The saying is around since Adam was a boy.

‘Never judge a book by its cover’.

It is a saying that has come from the lips of many.

Whether it is in relation to love, or purchasing an item, the saying is repeated ad nauseam.

It is something that many authors find difficult to accept, but readers regularly judge a book by its cover.

A trip into any of the Kilkenny shops and the friendly staff will tell you that a potential reader’s buying decision often starts with the cover.

And it’s not just the front cover but the title that grabs the reader’s attention.

A visit to a bookshop is an incredible experience for the reader. But for the publisher, there is a twenty second timeline to grab the reader’s attention.

And so, when we picked up a copy ‘We are Kilkenny Cats!’, we can certainly say that the publishers meet the aforementioned criteria. And some.

PRAISE FOR PRODUCTION Kilkenny author Donal Cadogan and illustrator Gemma Aloisi deserve great praise for the presentation.

That it was printed locally in Kilkenny by Modern Printers makes it all the sweeter.

Geared towards the younger market, the book is a little gem and would be ideal reading both for school and for home. One would suggest children from fourth class and upwards would be in their element with this book.

For obvious reasons, the book is narrated by a cat called Nora.

Called after the mighty river Nore. Naturally.

Nora tells, in wonderful detail not only what it means to be a Kilkenny cat but the History of Kilkenny.

Each period in the history of the city is told by one of Nora’s ancestors.

The book is a very clever way of teaching the history

of Kilkenny to a younger audience.

It does so in plain and simple language while at the same time filling the young readers mind with an abundance of information.

CATS HAVE A TALE TO TELL Some of the cats include Ossie The Chieftain cat who tells how two thousand years ago Leinster and Munster were constantly at war.

In tells about the people called the Osraige which means the people of the Deer and their Kingdom of Ossory.

We are also introduced to Norman, the warrior cat who explains what occurred in 1169 when King Henry II of England sent his Norman Knights to Ireland.

It tells of a man called Strongbow who decided to

build a wooden fort near the Cathedral of St Caince.

The book covers all imaginable aspects of history and the reader will learn about the mining industry in Kilkenny; Edmund Ignatius Rice; the founding of Smithwick’s Brewery; the Kings of Ossory; the formation of Parliament in 1367; the walls of Kilkenny; the coal mining industry; Kilkenny’s involvement in WW1 and the birth of the Kilkenny Design workshop.

And more.

Of course special mention must go to Henry, the hurler’s cat, as no book about Kilkenny would be complete without the mention of hurling.

HISTORICAL AND EDUCATIONAL It would be our opinion that every household in Kilkenny should have a copy of this

book. Not only that, but every school, in every parish of county Kilkenny should get their hands on this stunning publication.

This is going to prove a most rewarding resource for students and múinteoirí alike.

Both historical and educational, it ticks all the right boxes.

The author allocates a full page also to the story of how Kilkenny people became known as ‘the cats’.

This is a must read for Kilkenny people, at home and abroad and we are willing to bet, that no matter how many copies are printed, a reprint will be ordered soon.

His work is a treasure trove that will be extremely beneficial to sowing the seed of interest in history to young

minds.

Donal explained to The Kilkenny Observer, that plans are afoot for a schools resource package to accompany the book.

As for Sicilian born illustrator Gemma Aloisi, may we suggest the following.

Such is the power of her work, she should make her way to the nearest milliner in Kilkenny.

Once there, she should purchase an item of her fancy.

Then she should obtain one of the biggest feathers she can find and place it firmly in her recent millinery purchase.

A credit to both, and there is no doubt that readers will love the account of one thousand years of Kilkenny history.

Cherish every ‘meowment’.

Nicholas Ryan-Purcell proves that anything is possible as he learns to live with autism Nicholas Ryan-Purcell was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome at thirteen years of age. He was also faced with mental health challenges, brought on by early trauma, which triggered a lengthy depression. Nicholas overcame a series of obstacles to complete his Leaving Certificate and then undertake, and graduate, from a threeyear course in TV production at Ballyfermot College Dublin.

WHILE attending a workshop in Listowel many years ago, John B Keane gave one of the best talks on ‘what it takes to become a writer’.

In his own inimitable style, Keane mixed jokes and yarns in an effort to reply to as many questions as possible.

“What makes a good writer stand out” one budding writer queried.

The Listowel bard sipped a Jameson and answered in his Listowel drawl: “You must live with your story. Then you must write it down and be prepared to stand over it. No matter what your critics think, if you are happy with it, and believe in it, then you are on your way to being a writer”.

Nicholas has been repeating ‘victories’ since childhood.

This is his first book, and he rose to prominence in recent years for his documentaries about living with autism and another one about ‘Underdog horse Gordon Lord Byron’.

Although originally from Emly in Tipperary, Nicholas is no stranger to Kilkenny .

The Kilkenny Observer spoke with two Kilkenny people who have had first hand dealings with the author.

Jackie Cullen who is a Special Needs Assistant at The School of the Holy Spirit had this to say: “ I met Nic at a screening of his documentary in Kilkenny. He later came to our school and had a most interesting question and answer session with parents of children with autism.

‘Kilkenny Communities in action’ is full of praise for Nicholas. I have interviewed Nicholas on a couple of occasions and from our first meeting it was obvious he is a man of great determination and drive”.

THIS IS NICHOLAS The 230 page book from Nicholas deals with learning to live with autism.

Award-winning filmmaker Nicholas became nationally known after releasing his documentary film ‘This is Nicholas: Living with Autism’ in 2018. It was screened in 28 Irish cinemas, featured on RTÉ’s Nationwide, and led to Nicholas appearing as part of a panel on the Late, Late Show.

For anyone trying to understand the trials and tribulations of a person living with autism, this sixty minute documentary is well worth a viewing.

In a way, viewing the

documentary allows you to know Nicholas a bit better and allows you into his life.

His awards in the world of film include *Editing for feature documentary award ( London filmmaker festival) *Editing and foreign feature awards at Hollywood International Independent Documentary awards at Hollywood International Documentary awards USA *The spirit award at the 2012 SCC Winter Short Film Festival, Kentucky USA FROM CHILDHOOD TO MANHOOD His book is a no holds barred account of his life from childhood to adulthood.

We learn how as a youngster he struggled to make friends and how he would find himself alone in the playground while the others in the class ran about with the carefree attitude synonymous with children of that age.

Apart from, or maybe because of his autism, Nicholas suffered badly with depression and that inner voice tormenting him with negative thoughts telling him he wasn’t good enough.

Think of someone constantly prodding you with a needle. Now think about that prodding coming from inside your head.

Multiply it by one hundred and you are on the way to understanding the depression being experience

by Nicholas.

This negative feeling was to last for years.

However, with the help of a loving community, teachers, and friends Nicholas was able to overcome his fears and go on to become a respected and award winning film maker and writer.

While many helped him on his journey, it would be remiss not to single out Nicholas’s parents Dorothy and Oliver and his sister Joanna.

He points out that had it not been for the doggedness and pure love that his parents showed him, his life would have been so different.

And it wasn’t an easy ride.

On more occasions that he cares to remember, both his parents would correct him and point out the error of his ways.

But always in a loving and constructive way.

One beautiful quote from Dorothy sums up her attitude: “It is not my job to

be liked by my child, but it is my job to ensure that my child is liked by everybody else”.

In fairness the fingerprints of his parents love and support are rather obvious on all the steps of Nicholas’s life

WHO IS THIS BOOK FOR? So who is this book for? We would suggest that if you want to discover and understand more about autism then it is a book for you.

However it is much more than that. It is a book about setting and achieving goals.

It is a book about believing in yourself, and when that belief is at a low ebb, allowing family and friends to help and guide you.

In a way, it is about achieving happiness.

The great philosopher Carl Jung wrote “Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word happy would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness. It is far better to take things as they come along with patience and equanimity.”

Irish Wheelchair Association Conal Byrne

Mary Coughlan visits the Irish Wheelchair Association centre THE service users in the IWA have had the privilege of having the ‘Mobile Music Machine’ visit which is a group of the finest musicians from Ireland who played a number of concerts for them over the past 12 months. Covid care concerts were created by Gerald Peregine who plays the cello. The concerts bring the best of Irish talent to nursing homes and disability settings to lift the spirits of the clients and service users throughout the pandemic. The IWA were lucky to have Mary Coughlin perform for them last Thursday, December 16th. The musicians and Mary Coughlin were very generous with their time and played some beautiful classical music, well known hits and Christmas songs.

The concert was performed to the IWA service users in the centre on the College Road and those who could not be there joined in on Zoom.

The service users were extremely happy with the performance which was a lovely way to end the year. A presentation was made and a hamper and gifts were given to the musicians to say thank you for the concerts they have performed in the IWA throughout the year.

Twisted spiced bread with honey and tahini butter Bake this twisted spiced bread for a showstopping brunch. This Middle Eastern-inspired loaf is laced with cinnamon, cardamom and sesame and served with a moreish homemade spread.

Prep: 35 mins Cook: 40 mins plus up to 2 hrs 30 mins proving Serves: 10-12 Ingredients • 120-140ml whole milk • 50g unsalted butter , cubed • 300g strong white bread flour , plus extra for dusting • 50g golden caster sugar • ½ tsp fine sea salt • 7g sachet fast-action dried

yeast • 1 medium egg , lightly beaten • oil , for the bowl For the filling • 50g unsalted butter , softened • 2 tbsp sesame seeds , toasted • 50g light brown soft sugar • 3 tsp cinnamon • ¼ tsp ground cardamom For the honey & tahini butter • 70g salted butter , softened • 2 tbsp runny honey • 2 tbsp tahini For the icing • 75g golden icing sugar sesame seeds , for sprinkling (optional)Method

STEP 1 Warm 120ml milk and the butter in a small saucepan until melted.

Leave to cool to lukewarm.

STEP 2 Combine the flour, sugar, salt and yeast in the bowl of a stand mixer. Make a well in the centre and pour in the egg and warmed milk, then mix until just combined. If it seems a little dry, add an extra 20ml milk. Knead the mixture on a gentle speed using a dough hook for 5-8 mins, or until the dough is smooth and springs back when pressed. If you don’t have a stand mixer, combine everything in a bowl, then knead on a lightly floured surface for 8-10 mins. Shape

the dough into a ball and leave to prove in a large, lightly oiled bowl covered with a tea towel for 1 hr-1 hr 30 mins, or until doubled in size.

STEP 3 To make the filling, combine the ingredients and set aside.

STEP 4 Line a large baking sheet with baking parchment. Roll the proved dough out on a lightly floured surface to a 40cm square. Spread the filling evenly over the dough using a palette knife, leaving a 2cm border around the edge. Roll the dough up into a tight log, starting with the end furthest from you – it should measure roughly 40cm in

Gingerbread pancakes These warming pancakes are the perfect start to Christmas Day. They’re loaded with festive gingerbread flavours, and made extra indulgent with chopped dates and a generous dollop of crème fraîche.

Prep:10 mins Cook:15 mins - 20 mins Makes: 10 Ingredients • 150g self-raising flour • ½ tsp baking powder • 1 tsp ground ginger • 1 tsp cinnamon • 2 tsp golden caster sugar • 1 egg , beaten • ½ tbsp maple syrup , plus extra to serve • 200ml full-fat milk or semiskimmed milk • vegetable oil , for frying • 100g pitted dates , chopped, to serve • 100ml crème fraîche , to serve

Method STEP 1 Put the flour, baking powder, ginger, cinnamon and sugar in a large bowl with a pinch of salt. Combine the egg, maple syrup and milk in a jug. Gradually add to the dry ingredients, whisking until a smooth, silky batter forms.

STEP 2 Heat a drizzle of oil in a large, non-stick pan over a medium heat and ladle 2-3 small rounds into the pan. Cook for 1-2 mins until bubbles start to appear on the surface, then flip over and cook for a further 1 min until fluffy. Do this in batches until you have 10 pancakes.

STEP 3 Serve in a stack, with extra maple syrup, a blob of crème fraîche and dates scattered over.

STEP 6 Put the sheet in the centre of the oven and bake for 35-40 mins, covering loosely with

foil if it starts to become too dark during baking. When ready, the loaf should be golden and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Leave to cool slightly for 15 mins if you’re serving it warm, or leave to cool completely on a wire rack.

STEP 7 To make the tahini butter, mix the ingredients with a pinch of salt using a wooden spoon until combined. To make the icing, mix the sugar with 1 tbsp warm water until smooth, adding more if it’s too thick. Drizzle over the loaf and sprinkle with the sesame seeds, if using. Slice the loaf and serve with the honey & tahini butter. Best eaten the day it’s made.

Here are our selections for for streaming in those hazy, lazy days between Christmas and the New Year..

If you ever wondered what one of the directors of Crank was up to now (as we all do), well he’s making cracking TV in the form of Happy. This rather violent, blacker than black comedy series focuses on Christopher Meloni as a hitman who starts to see his daughter’s imaginary friend, which just happens to be an animated blue unicorn (voiced by Patton Oswalt). Annoyingly it was cancelled after just two seasons but, even though it leaves you hanging a little, it’s still well worth a watch.

You like Turner and Hooch, right? Of course you do. Tom Hanks + a dog = good ’80s movie. Okay, well, what if Turner and Hooch was set in the post-apocalyptic future... and instead of working as a cop, Tom Hanks is one of the last people on Earth and he travels the planet with his dog and a robot... and the movie was directed by the guy who did the awesome Hardhome and Battle Of The Bastards episodes of Game Of Thrones. It’s Finch time.

Jeymes Samuel’s slick, stylish Netflix Western is a ‘pick your fighter’ lineup of gun-slinging, swag-dripping Black cowboys ready to dust off the history books and give us a more accurate, diverse representation of the Old West.

Jonathan Majors is having a hell of a year and here, he imbues the deadly Nat Love with some impressive comedic beats that make it easy to root for the vengeance-minded outlaw. Idris Elba, LaKeith Stanfield, and Zazie Beetz round out the main cast members with the most things to do on screen and all of the shoot-outs and train robberies and saloon fights are timed perfectly to an eclectic mix of Reggae/Dancehall bangers produced by Samuel and collaborator Jay-Z. This ain’t your grandad’s Western, and really, that’s kind of the point.

Andrew Garfield is giving us a musical-thirst-trap performance in this LinManuel Miranda-directed biopic that pays tribute to Jonathan Larson, the artistic genius who changed Broadway with his seminal musical Rent. This film examines Larson’s life before fans were belting out Season of Love though, with Garfield giving an award-worthy turn as a restless visionary who feels the suffocating deadline of turning 30 without having produced a great show. The supporting cast is terrific, Garfield is doing his best work, and Miranda infuses everything with a genuine sense of love and admiration that makes it hard not to root for this one.

Berry makes her directorial debut and stars as a disgraced fighter named Jackie Justice (Jackie Justice!) who is back in the cage to deal with various personal demons. It’s Halle Berry’s movie! The reviews are pretty good!

You might be wondering that there are already nine million books and documentaries and academic studies about the Beatles out there. Do we really need The Beatles: Get Back? Yes, we do. The three-part documentary comes from Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson and includes never-before-seen footage of John, Paul, George, and Ringo in the studio recording their final masterpiece. You’ll like it.

Oscar-nominee Riz Ahmed likes to make the kind of movies you wouldn’t expect him to. In 2019, he played a rock n roll drummer slowly losing his hearing and having to upend his life because of it. This year, well ... he’s surviving an alien invasion. Sort of. Encounter is one of those streaming movies that quietly sneak onto a platform – this time it’s Amazon Prime Video – and usually stay buried under all the other content the algorithm prioritises. Hopefully, that doesn’t happen here though because Ahmed is a force on screen, playing a disturbed man and desperate father who believes he’s saving his two sons from an extra-terrestrial invasion that no one else knows is happening.

Academy Award winner Paulo Sorrentino (The Young Pope) returns with this story of tragedy and unexpected joys, along with how fates intertwine. It’s a story about young Fabietto Schisa and the arrival of a football legend on the scene. Ultimately though, Sorerentino’s telling this story from his own hometown (Naples), so expect a deeply personal (and of course, achingly beautiful) experience.

Well, it’s Sandra Bullock as a recently released violent felon who is trying to reintegrate into society after a number of years in prison and dealing with the various hurdles and stigmas attached to... all that. It sounds interesting and important, even if it’s not, like, the type of light holiday viewing you might be looking for this time of the year. Worth giving it a run at some point.

Benedict Cumberbatch gives a villainous performance for the ages in The Power Of The Dog, the first film in 12 years from director Jane Campion. The western is expected (and deserves) to be an Oscars frontrunner, so hop on the horse-drawn bandwagon now.

Set in the near future, Swan Song stars two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali as a husband and father who’s dying from a terminal illness.

To spare his family from unimaginable grief, he secretly agrees to undergo an experimental treatment where his memories will be transported into an exact healthy duplicate. Swan Song examines how far we’re willing to go to protect the ones we love. It’s science-fiction at its most melancholy.

This is a surprisingly star-studded — Ellie Kemper! Rob Delaney! Kenan Thompson! — addition to the Home Alone franchise, written by SNL veterans Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell. The plot remains the same: A 10-year-old boy gets left behind when his parents head off to Tokyo and he has to defend his house from various bumbling criminals. The reviews so far are... not great, but it might be worth a go if you’re looking for a nostalgia blast to the face or something to watch with younger children.

Fertility Treatment Centre I am passionate about my work in helping couples to have a healthy baby. I have been very successfully treating couples/ individuals with fertility issues for 25 years.

I combine my experience in Western and Chinese medicine as well as working with the intelligent nature of the body. I found Chinese medicine really helped my own health and fertility. I then studied Chinese medicine for 5 years.

Chinese medicine is the oldest medicine in the world at 5000 years old. I worked in three hospitals in China in 2001 and I saw how western and Chinese worked together.

While I’ve done many courses and research in both Western and Chinese medicine. I would say nature is my biggest teacher! I spend a lot of time in nature.

Although sometimes challenging, I understand deeply how nature has our back in supporting us with good health and good fertility.

In nature to grow a plant, we need to have fertile soil and a healthy seed. Whether planning IVF or natural fertility. This concept is what proves successful time and time again in having a healthy baby.

The farmer’s daughter in me understands how a race horse at the top of its game is the hardest one to get into foul until the horse is more relaxed.

We like to think we are very different from animals, however research in DNA shows we are very similar.

The main client I see is the “golden child” now adult in the family carrying a lot of expectation. In Chinese medicine they say “our mind is in our blood.” When the mind is stressed, this reflects in a stressed body, inflammation, poor health and infertility.

My passion is to help you to have a child of a healthy constitution in both mind and

body. To reproduce a centred and balanced child, you need to be centred and balanced first!

While I support couples and individuals going through IVF. The vast majority of couples conceive naturally even if they have had a history of multiple failed IVF cycles. I see the fertility challenge as a person’s gift! Often a time for transformation to self-love, trust and truth.

I am the mother of three healthy beautiful daughters. I know the joy they bring. I am passionate to help you to have a healthy baby.

A GENTLEMAN’S PASSING The parish of Clara were left saddened on Friday last when the news broke that Tommy Brennan of Clarabricken, Clara had passed away the night before.

Tommy was the President of Clara GAA Club and had also been a long standing Councillor of Kilkenny County Council. He was a man of great standing in the community and sympathies are extended to his wife Mai, his children Marian, Padraic, Elaine and John and all the extended family.

CAMOGIE SUCCESS The long awaited Roinn B U16 Camogie county final between Clara and St. Lachtains, Freshford was finally played on Sunday afternoon at a foggy St. James’ Park. A minutes silence was observed before the start in memory of Clara Club President Tommy Brennan.

As if inspired by his memory Clara took the bull by the horns from the start and a goal by Emma Shortall and points by Emma Corr and Lucy Boyd from a free had them 1-2 to 0-0 ahead at the first water break. This lead could have been far greater if Clara had taken all their chances but credit must also be given to the Freshford full back line, who were outstanding throughout.

Then, as if to remind us that county finals in Kilkenny are never easily won, Freshford opened the second quarter scoring with a goal of their own. However the Clara response was impressive and two Lucy Boyd efforts from play left them 1-4 to 1-0 ahead at the halftime whistle. It was noticeable too that Pia Langton and Joanne Comerford were well on top in the middle of the park and were supplying plenty of ammunition to their forwards.

It was in the third quarter that Clara sealed this win.

Three Laoise Nolan points, two of them from well struck 45s, and another good Lucy Boyd point gave them a commanding 1-8 to 1-1 lead after three quarters.

Freshford could only manage two points from placed balls in the final quarter while Lucy Boyd added another free and Emma Corr and Emma Shortall both chipped in with lovely points from play. Freshford tried hard but the Clara full back line of Sarah Dunne, Rachel Whelan and Alva Power stood firm. The half back line of Rachel Brickell, Laoise Nolan and Lucy Walsh were thundering forward all game. As already mentioned Pia Langton and Joanne Comerford gave Clara a real foothold around the middle. The two Emmas, Corr and Shortall were very busy throughout while Niamh Brickell foraged tirelessly for possession.

Jessica Brennan, Lucy Boyd and Ava Kenny proved to be a formidable full forward line and Katie Agar and Rachel Lakes were real handfuls when they came on.

The final score was 1-11 to 1-3 and Clara were fully deserving of their victory.

Captain Emma Shortall paid tribute to the recently deceased Tommy Brennan and Freshford’s Claire Maher in her acceptance speech and also made an emotional reference to the absent Sarah Dobbyn, who was a big part of the evolution of this team. A great Clara victory and huge credit to mentors David Shortall, Eamonn Rafter, Joe Casey and Mary O Connell. Well done also to referee Paul Hunsten, who was barely noticed throughout, always a good sign of a ref.

The two Manogues took home first prize after an epic final. It has to be mentioned Noah was a late sub in after covid raised its head again, a good young club man, and at only 15 did not look out of place.

TREE PLANTING It was a great morning at St. John’s Park on Saturday last as 1200 native trees and hedgerow were planted by club members and the Keep Kilkenny Beautiful vounteers in the annual Kilkenny 8000 Tree Biodiversity and climate change challenge. Lovely Hurling FOOTBALL AIB Leinster Club Jnr Football Championship Freshford, Sunday Dec 19 11am Referee : G Hurley O’Loughlin Gaels 0-6 to 3-16 Clonbullogue (Offaly) A fog burdened Freshford was the setting for this Leinster Jnr Football Championship and after a decent start the Gaels were quickly burdened with the weight of a strong footballing opposition. Within two minutes the Clonbullogue no.11 Kevin O’Neill put the Offaly men ahead with the first of his 5pts. Sammy Johnson would equalise soon after from the placed ball but three unanswered points by the faithful men were an early indication of what was in store for the morning’s engagement. The Gaels dug in and expelled some good passages of play but their naivety cost them possession at vital moments. The footballing guile of the winners was evident as they were far more effective when it came to counter attack and off the shoulder running. By the first water break the score sat at 0-5 to 0-2, Robbie Buckley converting the Gaels 2nd. On the restart Mikey Butler added another point but the next score for the Gaels wasn’t to come until the 47th minute, during which time the winners had registered a further 1-8 - the goal coming from a penalty dispatched by the aforementioned O’Neill while the Gaels registered a black card courtesy of one Mikey Butler. Substitutes Davey Burke and Evan Walsh did inject a much needed energy into the Gaels cause but Burke’s 47minute point was quickly followed up by a second Clonbullogue goal. Burke would add a second and Johnson finish the Gaels scoring from a placed ball but the Offaly side ran out comfortably to

WEDDING BELLS The marriage took place recently at St.Canices Church Clough Ballacolla between Jonathan Doheny of Woodview Freshford and Joanne Harrisson of Ballacolla Co.Laois. The ceremony was performed

by Fr.Noel Maher. The Bride was attended by Miriam Dillon, Catherine Harrison, Karen McEvoy and Siobhan Vahey. Groomsmen were Mark Kavanagh, Ger Doheny, John P Kavanagh and Dennis Long. The Offertory procession was done by the bride and grooms mothers Bertilla Doheny and Mary Harrison. Readings were done by Linda Doheny and Catriona Long and prayers of the faithful were by Shauna McGrath, Michael Harrison, James Harrison, Megan Callanan and Charlotte O’Flaherty. The happy couple will reside in their newly built home at Inch Freshford . Joanne is a member of staff at St.Lachtains National School Freshford while Jonathan is employed at Kilkenny Golf Course. Jonathan was a member of Freshford Town Soccer teams since his school boy days and also member of St.Lachtains GAA teams over the years.

DEATH The death occurred last week of Peter Maher late of Ballydowel Rathmoyle. Aged in his late 80s he was

predeceased by his wife Mary a few years ago. A quiet inoffensive and good living gentleman he was widely known and respected in the area. Funeral mass took place in Tulla Church on Saturday morning last following by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

He is mourned by his son Joe, daughter Eleanor, grandchildren, son in law, daughter in law, nephews nieces and extended family to whom deepest sympathy is extended.

ANNUAL WALK Gathabawn Annual St Stephens Day Sponsored Walk takes place on St.Stephens Day. The group are delighted to welcome all walkers back after the year of covid restrictions. This year the walks will follow strict covid guildines. The walks will take place on the Gathabawn loop, and many people like to walk off the turkey and ham while meeting up with old friends at this annual event. The route is of moderate grade with good footwear recommended. Dogs are not allowed on the walks and you are asked to respect this as they rely on their local landowners for access to the stunning landscape. Walkers have 3 options. Walk 1 is 12km long with a 2780m ascent Gathabawn Loop up the Culllahill road takes 3-4 hrs across country roads and farmland.

Walk 2 is 7km Gathabawn short loop is similar and takes approx. 1-1.5 hrs. The first 2.5km country roads after which the main cross country loop is re-joined.

Walk 3- all road loop is from Gathabawn village up the Cullahill road, through Coolcashin Ballygooney around to Foyle Bridge and back to Gathabawn 6km family and buggy friendly and takes approx. 1.5 hrs.

The walk starts from Gathabawn village between 11am and 12 noon with registration beforehand outside Mackey’s pub. Hot soup will once again be available free of charge on return of walkers by kind donation of Glanbia Ballyragget.

ST.VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY Thanks to all who contributed to the annual Christmas collection for the St. Vincent de Paul Society recently.

SOCCER Freshford Town had only one team in action at the weekend. There were no school boys games. The Junior side recorded a great win on Sunday morning last when they travelled to Durrow to take on the Lions in an away league tie. They came out winners after a great game on a 3-2 scoreline with Jack Cleere getting a hat trick.

The annual St.Stephens Day soccer tournament is due to take place this year at Woodview all going well.

The training sessions for U8s finished up on Saturday last until after the Christmas holidays and will resume in the new year. All boys from 5 to 8 years old are welcome so go along and join up.

MACRA na FEIRME Macra na Feirme are looking to establish a new club in the Freshford area. Macra na Feirme is an organisation for young people between the ages of 17 and 35 who are interested in getting involved in sports, travel drama, debating or just want to meet new people and have some fun. AIB Leinster Club Senior Hurling Championship Final, Croke Park 19.12.21 Shamrocks Ballyhale (Kilkenny) 6-23 Clough Ballacolla (Laois) 0-14 Shamrocks Ballyhale laid down a huge marker as their bid for yet another All-Ireland club title gathered serious pace at headquarters last Sunday.

Having seen off the challenges of Mount Leinster Rangers and St Rynagh’s in the earlier provincial rounds, James O’Connor’s men put on their best display of the season to date to claim a 3rd Leinster title on the bounce.

Goals win games, and Shamrocks had six of the best as they showed their undoubted clash in dismantling the Laois Champions.

Coming into the final, all the talk outside of Kilkenny, was the impressive form of Stephen ‘Picky’ Maher, who had amassed a serious personal tally - 5-72 in Clough/ Ballacolla’s run to the provisional decider. In the wide-open spaces of Croke Park, Picky was never afforded the time and space necessary to show his talent as Darren Mullen did an exceptional man-marking job on the Laois dangerman as he was held scoreless from play. Maher’s only scores would come via three placed balls.

The Kilkenny champions opened their account in the first minute, when Colin Fennelly was fouled and TJ slotted over from close to the sideline under the Hogan stand. The Laois champions responded a minute later when their newly-wed star, Willie Dunphy hit a lovely point from long-range to level things up.

Then on three minutes, a long ball into the danger zone saw Brian Cody win possession under pressure. somehow, he managed to prod the ball in the direction of the supporting Eoin Cody, who picked it up, before dispatching it unerringly to the back of the net for his side’s first major of the day. A couple of minutes later, there was a slight scare for Ballyhale when TJ Reid appeared to catch his studs in the turf when nudged to the ground.

Thankfully, after a little attention from the medical team, he was ok to resume action.

Clough/Ballacolla then fired three unanswered points thanks to scores from Lee Cleere, Willie Dunphy and the best of the bunch, a long-range beauty from midfielder Aidan Corby. The game was tied, 0-4 to 1-1. Paddy Mullen was then fouled, which allowed TJ to pop over another score to put his side one up. Good pressure from TJ saw Shamrocks awarded a sideline cut, which Eoin Cody fired in towards the ‘21. TJ won possession before being fouled. TJ struck the placed ball over.

From the puck out, Aidan Corby grabbed the ball on the run before striking over another lovely score on the run. The same player repeated the feat moments later – his radar was definitely in! Paddy Mullen then saw his name in the book following a dangerous challenge on 16 minutes. Joey Holden then picked out Eoin Cody with a lovely pass. Cody cut inside his man, before striking over a nice score. Shamrocks 1-up at the first water break, 1-4 to 0-6.

The first score of the 2nd period would be a Ballyhale one.

Nice play on the sideline, saw Adrian Mullen pick out Eoin Kenneally, who ran straight for goal, before being halted in his tracks illegally. TJ punished the foul. Adrian Mullen was then harshly adjudged to have fouled Robbie Phelan. Picky took the free and fired it over from his own half, for his first score of the final in the 20th minute. From Dean Mason’s puck out, Paddy Mullen collected the ball out on the left and fired over a well taken score.

Adrian Mullen then took a pass in his own half before arrowing a lovely pass in on top of TJ, who saw his captain get away from his marker. TJ beat the full-back with his pass, Colin Fennelly collected the ball and made no mistake as he fired the ball past the Clough/Ballacolla keeper Dunne. The Laois men, stung from conceding a second major responded with two quick-fire points from than man Aidan Corby and full-forward Willie Dunphy. Colin Fennelly then caught

Despite coming under pressure from three defenders, the captain somehow managed to flick the ball over the advancing keeper and into the net! What a tremendous piece of skill! Shamrocks now led 3-6 to 0-9 after just 24 minutes.

Ronan Corcoran then got in on the scoring when he struck over a lovely score from half-way.

Anything Aidan Corby could do...

Ronan could do too! Fennelly then wasted a glorious chance of a first half hat-trick of goals, when once again he collected the ball, before beating his marker with ease and heading for goal.

On this occasion, the skipper just pulled his shot wide of the left-hand post. The Shamrocks No.14 was in the action again, just moments later, when he was again picked out by his defenders.

This time he hand-passed to Kenneally who’s mindset was to go towards goal.

The rangy forward was held up, but had the presence of mind to off-load to his captain, who popped the ball between the posts.

Clough/Ballacolla were then awarded a free on half way which Stephen ‘Picky’ Maher struck over from half-way for his side’s tenth point of the game.

Referee Richie Fitzsimons then blew for the end to a Ballyhale dominated 1st half; James O’Connor’s men led 3-11 to 0-10 at the short whistle.

This was probably the most consistent 1st half of hurling that Ballyhale had produced this season. There was a constant goal threat.

They scored three, but honestly, they could have had a couple more. The Laois champions main threat, Picky Maher had been kept ‘Bjork like’ - Oh so quiet, if you know what I mean.

The reason for this – a fine man-marking job

by Darren Mullen, who was enjoying this important role. Richie Reid, was picking up lots of loose ball and keeping his defence very much on top of their attacking opponents. For Clough/Ballacolla, they were best served in the first half by Aidan Corby, scorer of 4 lovely points and the hard-working Lee Cleere in defence.

When play resumed, Clough/Ballacolla had the chance for a settling early score when the referee awarded them a free for a push.

Unfortunately, for the Laois champions, Picky Maher pushed his free just wide of the posts.

Shamrocks did likewise themselves just after, when Darragh Corcoran fired wide having been picked out by Brian Cody.

Darragh Corcoran then fired in a lovely pass from the sideline to find Eoin Kenneally, who turned beautifully, before splitting the posts with a nice strike for the first score of the second half. Picky Maher then made amends for his earlier miss, when he pointed from a placed ball moments later.

Clough/Ballacolla full-back Darren Maher was then withdrawn from the action on 35 minutes, much to his relief I’m sure, as he never got to grips with Ballyhale captain Colin Fennelly, scorer of 2-1 in the first half.

A long ball into the Shamrocks defence looked as if it might cause a problem, but not with Joey Holden around. The full-back read the ball well before emerging under pressure and minus his hurl. Joey hand-passed to Darren Mullen, who batted a low pass to Darragh Corcoran.

The wing-back then slipped the ball to Patrick Mullen, who angled a long pass towards TJ Reid. The ball broke to Adrian Mullen who picked it up before firing low past the helpless Cathal Dunne for his sides 4th major of the day, Shamrocks now led 4-12 to 0-11.

The Laois Champions were reeling. They needed goals to get back in touch with their opponents. They secured possession, before picking out Willie Dunphy just inside the ‘D’.

The full-forward only had eyes for goal. He collected the pass before striking for goal, but Ballyhale keeper Dean Mason wasn’t to be beaten. The netminder saved the shot before passing to Richie Reid, who looked up and fired a pass to Adrian Mullen, who stepped inside before finding his county team mate Eoin Cody with a lovely pass. The Shamrocks No.15 slipped a pass to the advancing Brian Cody whose low shot took a deflection and wrongfooted the Clough/Ballacolla keeper for goal number FIVE. Some nice defensive play by Ballyhale saw Darragh Corcoran emerge with possession before striding forward and passing toward Ronan. The ball was cleared straight back to the wing-back who fired over a lovely point from out on the left. Clough/Ballacolla came again – but more outstanding defending from Richie Reid denied them. Eoin Cody then took possession of the ball before going on a run into the danger zone. Before getting bottled up, he passed to Brian Cody who slotted over for another point.

That man Richie Reid then won a ball before being fouled by Robbie Phelan, just inside his own ‘65. TJ stepped up and did what TJ does – punished the indiscretion. The referee then

Richie Reid then won possession close to the sideline under the Hogan stand, he struck his pass away, before being crudely taken out of it by Clough/Ballacolla centre-forward Jordan Walshe, who cut a frustrated figure when receiving his yellow card. Eoin Cody stepped up and slotted over the free. From the puck out, Shamrocks collected the ball through Adrian Mullen, who passed to Eoin Cody – and yes, you guessed it, Eoin split the posts. As the Clough Ballacolla Twitter post said at full-time: “All over. Rumours of Ballyhale’s demise have been greatly exaggerated.”

An Eleventh Leinster title. Their 3rd in a row. Yes, they may have ridden their luck in the run to the provincial decider, but as Bainisteoir James O’Connor said afterwards “If you poke the bear enough times, he will awake.” Last Sunday at Croke Park, the Ballyhale bear awoke.

I would go as far as to say that this was vintage Ballyhale. From the first whistle to the final one, they never let up. Even when 20 odd points ahead, they hunted in packs, they never gave the Laois champions a second. The hunger was there for all to see. Defenders snapped into the tackle; men put their heads where many a man wouldn’t put a shovel. It was all on the line today and Shamrocks ensured that only one team was crossing this line as winners.

Such was their performance that Ballyhale afforded themselves the luxury of emptying the bench throughout the 2nd half.

Let’s talk about Mr. Reid. No, not TJ – Richie. The Shamrocks No.6 was immense throughout proceeding at headquarters. At times it looked like there were 5 or 6 Richie Reid’s on the hallowed turf of Croker. He was everywhere. His reading of the game was exceptional. Richie was like a ‘Dyson’, gliding around headquarters hoovering up any bits of danger that threatened their clean sheet. Anything that did go past him was mopped up by Joey.

Darren Mullen’s marking job on Picky Maher – top notch. The sharp-shooter never scored from play.

Again, midfielders Ronan Corcoran and Brian Cody were sensational. Show me a better 8 & 9 in club hurling. They also weighed in with 8 of their sides total.

If you had told me that TJ would be the 3rd top scorer for Shamrocks in the final, I’d have bet against you. Step forward Eoin Cody & Captain, Colin Fennelly. Eoin Cody is bubbling along nicely. He hit 1-6. IT Carlow will be dangerous with him in the Fitzgibbon.

Colin Fennelly got his reward on the scoreboard today for all his efforts in the county & provincial campaigns. His 2nd goal was skillful, clever and improvisation at its best.

While not winning any scoring competitions, Adrian Mullen’s performance was probably only second to MOTM Richie Reid. Some of his passing was exquisite. His desire and hunger to win possession when his opponent may be favourite to get the ball, is unreal. I love the way he can ‘mix it’. I like the edge to his game. By the way, Patrick & Kevin’s contribution to the victory was key as well.

Clough Ballacolla can be immensely proud of their efforts this year. Two County titles, a provincial final, not to be sniffed at. Willie Dunphy, unlike TJ can now head off on honeymoon.

Munster champions await, but that’s a matter for another day. Ballyhale can enjoy Christmas.
