Closed school with 30 cases is ordered to re-open by department THE school in Co Wexford, whose board decided to close after 30 pupils contacted Covid, had reopened after only two days — after being indtructed to do so by the Department of Education.

CBS Primary School in Wexford town told RTÉ News that the majority of its pupils had remained at home however.

The school said that around one quarter of children were in attendance.

It did not reopen to pupil after more than 30 cases of the virus were detected.

However, it reversed that decision following a direction to reopen from the Department of Education Mooking back at the buildup of infection among pupils over the past week and more, Principal Vicky Barron was critical of HSE guidance when it became “very obvious at least to me that this was a school outbreak as we could have had 10 cases” at a particular stage.

The board of management took the decision to close the school.

Ms Barron had sought the advice of Public Health in relation to closing the school to children and was told “the HSE don’t give that advice, that it’s up to the board of management to make that call so we we’re just sorry we didn’t make it soonerean-

while, primary school teadhers’ leaders want an urgent review of face coverings for the under-13s as well as the return of Covid testing and tracing to their sn,chools as virus infection levels rise.

The Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) says public health protection measures in 3,200 primary schools must be scaled up to deal with the latest Covid wave.

While schools are non a week-long Halloween midterm break, the union will be pressing for changes on their return.

The INTO protested against the end of routine public health risk assessments and automatic contact tracing of asymptomatic close contacts among primary pupils on September 27, along with the decision not to require them to restrict their movements. That was at a time when it looked as if infection levels were under control.

Now, the INTO says deputy chief medical officer Dr Ronan Glynn and other public health experts are “openly raising alarm” about the deteriorating public health landscape.

A HSE spokesperson said if public health determined that all staff and children needed to be removed from an educational facility, it was based on a comprehensive risk assessment.

“Public Health very rarely requires that all children and staff need to be removed from an educational facility.’”

Booster shot may not go so smoothly for the HSE

Dr Ronan Glynn: INTO says deputy chief medical officer and other public health experts are “openly raising alarm”

IT LOOKS as if the HSE will struggle to protect hundreds of thousands of people with booster Covid-19 shots who may have waning immunity as the cases of the virus and hospitalisations rise again.

Niac has recommended everyone over 60 get a booster shot, and with healthcare workers added to that, it would mean vaccines would need to be rolled out to more than 1.2 million people.

The HSE has around two million Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, much of which could be deployed in the booster roll-out.

However, it is unclear how soon this can happen.

It would leave a race to give the booster top-ups as the virus gains another grip in the coming months.

The National Immunisation Advisory Committee (Niac) met yesterday to consider extending booster shots.

Additional vaccines are already being administered

to people over 65 in nursing homes. They are also being administered to the over 80s and people who have weakened immune systems.

The HSE has diverted staff from some of its vaccination centres to administer the booster vaccines to nursing homes.

It comes as figures show that 184 healthcare workers were infected with Covid-19 in a healthcare setting between September 12 and October 9.

A decision by Niac would have to be approved by chief medical officer Dr Tony Holohan and given the goahead by Health Minister Stephen Donnelly.

Meanwhile, Labour Party health spokesperson Duncan Smith yesterday called on the Government to provide the flu injection to all for free. It comes amid expert forecasts that this winter will see a widespread outbreak of flu.

He said: “If the Government are serious about

Prof. Philip Nolan PROFESSOR PhilipNolan has been appointed Director General of the Government’s science funding agency, Science Foundation Ireland (SFI).

Prof. Nolan, who recently completed his term as President of Maynooth University and is currently chair of the National Public Health Emergency Team’s (Nphet).

SFI is the major funder of science research in

Ireland with a capital allocation of over €200m in 2021 which is allocated to scientists, researchers and other bodies through the awarding of grants.

“The opportunity now is tto build on this success, focusing on excellence in research and its translation into tangible benefits for our economy and society, to secure our position in science agineering,” said Prof. Nolan

“The Government cannot hide behind the excuse that cost is a barrier here, as we all know there has been an underspend of over €800m in the Department of Health this year.

“I believe the Government’s decision to not offer the flu vaccine to all citizens for free is doing a disservice to our people, particularly

our frontline workers, while we are in the middle of the global Covid-19 pandemic, which will still be an issue during flu season.

“It’s not enough to just provide this vaccine free of charge to children and those in at-risk groups. This year of all years we must provide it to all citizens for free if we want to try minimise the damage on our emergency departments created in the past by the flu.

“The Labour Party has been calling for the flu injection to be made available to all for free since 2019.

“We all know the pressure that the winter flu puts on our emergency departments and our intensive care units. We cannot afford to have both the winter flu and Covid-19 rampant in our intensive care unit this November and December.

“Extending the flu vaccine to all for free could be the layer of protection needed for slowing the spread of the flu this year.”

Second school shut ANOTHER primary school has closed to in-person teaching because of Covid, Iaccording tondependent.ie.

The 135-pupil Hollywood NS in Co Wicklow did not open to pupils.

Principal Séamas Ó Briain declined to comment on the development.

It is the second primary school to close to in-person teaching because of the level of virus infection.

AS reported above,Wexford primary school closed its doors until after the Halloween break and switched to online teaching of its 270 pupils when at

least 30 Covid cases were confirmed.

The Fact Of The Matter PAUL HOPKINS

Schlock and horror, and not just at Halloween ...

WE all like a good fright now and then, and not just at Halloween, if only for the adrenalin rush and the cocoon of comfort that leaves us sated after the thrill has gone. Of course, there are those who are schlock and horror junkies needing frequent fixes of blood and gore and nightmarish ghouls. Otherwise, there would not be the expansive libraries of horror tales that is cinema and the printed word.

When I was at college many moons ago, I would give Friday afternoon lectures a miss for the Carlton Cinema on Dublin’s O’Connell Street to whet my appetite for the works of Edgar Allen Poe or the Dracula movies of Christopher Lee. To be honest, I think my adrenalin rush those misspent Friday afternoons was more down to the ample bosoms and exposed flesh of those beautiful, but hapless, wenches who fell foul of Christopher Lee’s

lack of a good orthodontist.

But horror and ghouls do not just abide in the world of literature or cinema or in our collective imagination. Horror, of a stomach-churning sort, exists in the real world.

I am not talking here of the horrors of man’s inhumanity to man that is evidenced in Yemen or South Sudan or in a hundred other global conflicts. Rather, I’m talking about Nature. Stories we associate with creep shows play out every day as animals use their shocking abilities in a savage effort to survive and pass on their genes. Nature is indeed red in tooth and claw, but, turns out, teeth and claws are some of the more docile adaptations in the evolutionary arsenal.

Consider the Ichneumon wasp, an innocent enough little bugger — it has no sting — I came across when I first visited America, also

many moons ago. In the movie ‘Alien’, the titular alien begins its lifecycle as a parasite embedded in a man’s chest before bursting forth in bloody fashion. Our friend the Ichneumon’s life cycle is strikingly similar to the lien’s. A female Ichneumon seeks out a host for her young, usually a caterpillar or such, and uses her syringe-like ovipositor — her organ used for laying eggs — to inject the creature with eggs. When they hatch in their unwilling nursery, the eggs begin devouring the poor old caterpillar from the inside out!

Unlike the alien, the Ichneumon larvae’s approach is surgical because, fair play to them, they leave essential organs like the heart for last in order to keep their ‘host’ alive, and therefore fresher, longer.

Cannibalism was the de riguer of low budget horror in my Friday afternoon cinema in

the 1970s. The natural world, however, has far fewer scruples when it comes to cannibalism than do B-movie directors.

Take the Spadefoot frogs who lay their eggs in rare desert pools. While these pools have few predators, they lack nutrients and evaporate quickly in the heat. To survive, the tadpoles must develop into toadlets and escape their barren nurseries in as little as a week.

The survivors manage this by cannibalising their smaller siblings and the winners emerge from the pond to renew the ghastly cycle, their bellies filled with their would- be brothers and sisters!

Meanwhile, some carnivorous plants have stepped up their culinary game and taken a liking to the taste of mammals.

With colourful, fluid-filled leaves, pungent scents, glistening glue or grasping tentacles, they lure their victims to a

nasty end. And they live right here in Ireland.

Anyone who has walked over a bog on a still, hot day will know what a paradise they are for insects, especially the biting sort.

What you may not know is that bogs are full of plants that

have turned the tables on the insect world and will capture, kill and eat every midge, bug and ant they can. John Wyndham’s classic The Day of The Triffids doesn’t come into it.

Finally, those creatures that permeate our worst nightmares. Rats typically avoid smells of cat pee — for obvious reasons! — but when afflicted with the dreaded slug-like protozoans — parasitic thingamejigs — called Toxoplasma gondii, the rat’s brain becomes rewired. T. gondii not only represses the rat’s natural fear of cat pee but replaces it with urges of sexual attraction.

The rat is driven to seek out the cat odour in the hope to procreate, but comes face-toface with the predatory Big Tom. At the end of the day, these microorganisms can only reproduce sexually within a cat’s intestines.

And I thought my sex life was weird...

M&S cancel Christmas food deal MARKS & SPENCER has withdrawn the Christmas Food To Order service from its shops in the Republic of Ireland, due to ongoing supply issues caused

by Brexit.

In notices on social media, the company said: “Given the current challenges in the food industry, there was too much

Work to begin soon on new City Library

A TOTAL of 39 social homes are planned for Kilkenny City and Thomastown.

Six new homes are planned at the Weather Station, Granges Road in Kilkenny and 33 new homes are planned for Ladywell in Thomastown.

Mayor Andrew McGuinness, has welcomed the announcement describing it as a positive announcement for Kilkenny.

“I’m delighted to welcome this positive news today as we will now see an additional 39 new homes provided in the city and county for families and individuals on our housing list,” said Mayor McGuinness.

“We have been making fantastic progress with housing in Kilkenny with the recent opening of new homes throughout the county but we still have a huge housing issue with many families struggling to keep a roof over their heads. Today’s news will certainly be a big help. I’m very grateful to Minister Darragh O’Brien and his Department for such a positive investment.”

Glanbia sets a price to pay milk farmers GLANBIA has confirmed it will pay its milk suppliers 36.6 cent per litre (cpl) for September.

Glanbia Ireland (GI) said it will pay a base milk price for September of 36.18 cpl (including VAT) for creamery milk at 3.6% fat and 3.3% protein. This is an increase of 1 cpl (including VAT) from the August base price.

Local farmers will also receive a 0.42 cpl (including VAT) payment from Glanbia Co-op on all milk supplied this month as their ‘Share of GI Profit’.

The Glanbia Ireland base price and Co-op ‘Share of GI Profit’ payment will be adjusted to reflect the actual constituents of milk delivered by suppliers.

Chairman John Murphy said: “Dairy markets have strengthened , mainly due to weaker milk supply from key dairy regions.

Higher farm input costs and other factors are curbing milk supply growth. There are significant inflationary pressures at all parts of the supply chain, which we are monitoring closely.”

€8.6m. overhaul in next three years for north county roads AN overhaul of North Kilkenny roads are in for an overhaul to the cost of more than €8.6million in the next three years.

The first big spend will be in 2022 with over €2.8 million to be spent on a number of significant road upgrades, local councillor Pat Fitzpatrick confirmed.

These roads include Lisdowney to Clone ,Gathabawn to Foyle North and Muckalee to Gaulestown as well as road upgrades at Flagmount North, Skehana, Kilmacar and Coon Village.

Councillor Pat Fitzpatrick said: “I’m delighted to welcome this substantial investment into roads in North

Kilkenny. This is badly needed as I see the poor condition of many of these roads on a daily basis and have been fighting the case for local residents for some time. I am happy that we are now seeing positive results.

“While €8.6 million is a sizeable investment, we do need a lot more to extend the

upgrades into other areas around the north of the county where I know residents are suffering as a result of poor road conditions. That said, I’m delighted that our cry for help has been answered in terms of the current list of works and I’m very much looking forward to seen the works been carried out.”

Mountain trails get new signage NEW signage marking out the Brandon Hill Summit Walk has bee installed, providing for large, map-broad trailhead signs at both the Deerpark and Raheendonore car parks, heritage information signs and marker post signage with direction length and the average duration to and from the summit.

Councillor Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere, who called for this signage to be improved last year, has welcomed the installation.

Still a way to travel on electric car question AS I SEE IT MARIANNE HERON

“YES, well no …maybe,” is not exactly an answer in the affirmative but it’s one that is used by South Africans when they haven’t worked out their answer. It covers all the options and it’s a turn of phrase I found myself using the other day when asked: “Have you thought about getting an electric or hybrid car?” Yes, I certainly have thought about an electronic vehicle (EV), or plug in hybrid (PHEV) it’s the responsible thing to do given the need to reduce carbon emissions to protect against climate change. There is no arguing with the point that transport accounts for the biggest share carbon emissions in Ireland: 40% in 2018. Well, no I haven’t given serious consideration buying an electric car YET not least due a recent experience. You might think that visiting a couple of open gardens would be stress free, but not it turns out, if the friend who was driving has an EV which has only a limited amount of charge left in her car. It should have been enough for the trip but we got

lost and found to our horror that we were nearly out of juice. There were no charging points at the couple of garages we passed. There’s a lack of joined up thinking about the necessity for charging points if people are to be encouraged to switch to EVs and their roll out by the ESB and private operators is still too slow.

There simply aren’t nearly enough chargers. A charge for a small EV will give you about 400km or less if you are going fast, have the windscreen wipers, radio or headlights on. Say you have to make a trip 260km or so Dublin Cork or vice versa, you will l need to recharge before you get home, which will take up to 40 minutes or twice that time if someone arrived at the available charger before you. There is a concern that EVs aren’t actually all that green or ethical given that the way manufacture of their batteries requires cobalt and lithium. Cobalt is mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo where child labour as young as seven years may be used and workers lack protective equipment against toxins which can cause lung disease. Lithium is mined in South America and may be extracted by pumping water underground to flush out lithium causing environmental problems like subsidence and toxic waste. We need to

know that mining companies are greening up their act. There’s also the question about what happens to discarded EV batteries which need to be replaced every six years or so. Maybe, like others on a modest income, I will make the switch when electric cars or hybrids are more affordable. EVs are still comparatively expensive despite an incentive of up to €5,000 off the Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) on a new EV from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland ( SEAI.) The cheapest models available cost around €30,000 and aren’t many second hand EVs available as yet. I have never bought a new car, the devaluation is like burning several thousand euro notes the minute you drive away from the car dealer’s garage.

My current beloved wheels are only eight years old which is young in my car terms and there is something counter intuitive about scrapping a perfectly good vehicle when I am trying to be to be responsible and consume less. If I do change that’s not the end of the story, there’s the expense of a installing a home charger, the SEAI grant of €600 might go halfway towards that in a standard situation but it seems in my case the grant might only cover a quarter or less .

News IRISH businesses across the country have reported a continued decline in revenue, with process inefficiencies and access to talent posing the biggest challenges to their post-Covid recovery.

The concerns were revealed in the inaugural Grant Thornton Irish Business Voice Programme survey of local business, carried out in partnership with local Chambers of Commerce across Ireland.

Some 51% of businesses surveyed revealed they expect their revenue will decrease this year, with 40% of those expecting revenue to decrease by 20% or more. The fall-off in revenue comes in spite of an extension to Government supports such as the Wage Subsidy Scheme and a betterthan-expected rebound forecasted in the wider economy in the second half of the year.

In addition to the expected drop-off in revenue, a number of areas of key concern were identified in the analysis of the survey responses gathered across June and July this year. Business process inefficiencies, access to a skilled workforce, and the implementation of sustainable development goals were all cited as significant issues.

Technology & Digital Transformation More than three-quarters (76%) of survey respondents indicated business process inefficiencies were a concern.

These range from Brexit regulatory changes; challenges of business automation; and streamlining new technologies required to support remote working.

The responses to the Irish Business Voice Programme echo similar figures gathered in research carried out on mid-size Irish businesses for Grant Thornton Ireland’s International Business Report (IBR) in the first half of 2021.

The IBR data found 48% of mid-size Irish businesses planned to invest in technology over the coming 12 months, while 38% also said they would invest in automation and digital ways to do business as a priority.

With new technology, and the now widespread hybrid working model, new opportunities to attract skilled workers can also be realised.”

Access to Skilled Workforce Almost three-quarters (74%) of businesses had some level of concern about accessing a skilled workforce, while of those 25% indicated a serious concern on the issue. With the continued drop in unemployment month-on-month in the third quarter of this year,

analysis shows businesses will need to be flexible on how they recruit talent, and strategically manage their internal

employee communications and future of work practices.

Furthermore, implementing and managing sustainable development goals was cited as a challenge by 70% of respondents, recognising the drive for sustainability being felt across all industries.

On a more positive note, more than half of businesses said they had no concerns about tax compliance and regulatory requirements in the Business Voice Programme survey; 50% also said they had no concerns about supply chain complexity de-

spite widespread delays in supply chains over the past 12 months.

Following on from the Irish Business Voice Programme, Grant Thornton Ireland will host a number of events for small businesses in partnership with Chambers of Commerce across the country in the coming months.

Tobacco retailers fear spiralling black market RETAILERS Against Smuggling (RAS) has expressed its apprehension over how yet another excise increase on tobacco is set to further fuel a rapidly growing black market. The group was reacting to the Budget 2022 increase of 50c on tobacco, bringing the cost of an average packet of 20 cigarettes to €15.00.

Commenting on the direct impact to legitimate registered retailers, National Spokesperson for Retailers

Against Smuggling Benny Gilsenan said: “It’s very disappointing to see an excise increase in the Budget which will inevitably make it even harder for retailers like myself to compete against the rapidly growing black market in Ireland.

“Ireland continues to be a key target for tobacco smugglers as a result of having one of the highest rates of duty on tobacco products in the EU, resulting in unfair competition for retailers.

“We fully expect that this latest excise increase will drive more Irish smokers to the black market with criminal gangs exploiting the demand for illicit tobacco products. This will inevitably lead to a growth in largescale smuggling activity and ant smuggling, “ he said.

“Ultimately this means retailers will continue to suffer not only through the loss of the legal purchase of cigarettes but also any additional purchases that person

might make when they are in the store. It is regrettable that the Minister Donohoe has ignored the warning made by both retailers and the Department of Finance Tax Strategy Group that an excise increase could encourage more smokers to source products outside of the State.”

To date this year, Revenue has announced 49 major tobacco seizures, including the seizure of over 40 million cigarettes, with an esti-

mated retail value of under €49m representing a potential loss to the exchequer of over €39m.

Mr Gilsenan concluded: “The detection and seizure of illegal tobacco products must remain a priority for Irish authorities, with increased awareness of the elaborate means criminal gangs are utilising to transport these huge volumes.”

Kilkenny home to 240 haunted sites!

AHEAD of Halloween, Aldi has looked at what makes the Irish public shake with fear, and some ahh-mazing facts about Kilkenny unhave been un A FORMER Tory Party bigwig suffered a “major heart attack” after being stripped of his Kilkenny mansion and is now “homeless” and in “desperate” financial straits, a Dublin court has heard, writes Paul Caffrey.

Lord George Magan (75), a one-time Conservative Party treasurer whose father was head of MI5, now has nothing but a State pension and finds himself “surrounded by jackals”, the Dublin Court of Appeal was told.

His devoted son Edward Magan — who served with Prince William in the wellrespected Irish Guards — is fighting in the Irish courts to get the prized mansion back for his father.

It was alleged at court that “rogue” trustees of opulent Castletown Cox “horse-traded” a €40m art collection and sold the highly valuable paintings for just £7m (€8.2m).

This was part of a covert “firesale” to “sell assets at low prices… this is extraordinary,” the peer’s son, former soldier Edward Magan, told the court.

“The family has been destroyed… We have a defendant [Lord Magan] who is surrounded by jackals and they’re just going for him on every level,” he told the court.

Lord Magan himself once appeared to have it all: a £6m house in upmarket Kensington, prestigious art collection and a prized Irish estate that is often described as the finest house in Ireland.

But in May 2018, eviction agents took possession of the Castletown, Kilkenny, property after a row with the Castletown Foundation Trust — that Lord Magan had set up himself — over unpaid rent.

The peer set up the trust for the benefit of two of his children, Edward and Henrietta.

He then sold the stunning 36,000 square-foot mansion — with 513 acres of farmland — to that trust in 2005. Under the agreement, Lord Magan had rights of residence — as long as he paid €100,000 a year in rent.

The trust later claimed the peer had fallen behind on rent payments and sued him in the Irish High Court twice over: for possession of the property and for €571,000 in rent arrears.

The peer argues that he spent large amounts on restoring the property and therefore never expected to be pursued for rent so doggedly. The baron lost in the

earthed. The creepy county is home to 240 haunted sites, which is one of the highest rates in the country. Perhaps this is why ghost sightings are more common in Leinster than in any other region, with 14% of respondents claiming to have seen a ghost before!

Kilkenny may be ghoulish, but Dublin takes the title of

Ireland’s over all spookiest town.

Additional analysis has revealed that Dublin is the spookiest county in Ireland.

The data was retrieved by careful analysis of the number of haunted sites, abandoned towns, abandoned building and ruins, graveyards, and sunshine hours in each county which

resulted in a league table of the spookiest counties in Ireland.

Coming in at the bottom as the least scary were Leitrim, and Longford. (Full league table in appendix below).

High Court on both counts and appealed both verdicts.

Then last December, the Court of Appeal ruled he had no legal right to occupy the mansion.

But last week, the second appeal — over the €571,000 High Court judgment of November 2018 — got under way.

During a dramatic hearing, the full extent of Lord Magan’s fall from grace was laid bare in the Court of Appeal by his son.

Edward Magan revealed his plan to report to gardaí the allegedly “criminal” repossession of the Irish property.

Representing himself, the 46-year-old Trinity College Dublin graduate launched a last-ditch appeal to regain ownership of the picturesque property for his father.

In a tell-all speech, he revealed to three senior judges: “He [Lord Magan] had a major heart attack in April.

“He has no home. He doesn’t have anything apart from a state pension.

“Lives are at stake and I’m here putting my case before the court because it’s a desperate situation.

“I’m going to the guards.

As a former soldier and with

my own kin [police] we can go out and find the wrongdoing.

“I’m never going to stop… I’m sure the court has a sense of the raging injustice… the family got thrown under the bus.” He claimed that the landlord never “came asking for the rent”, adding: “The understanding went much deeper.

“They intuitively knew the tenant [Lord Magan] had spent 25 million doing this house up. He hadn’t been too concerned because his heart was in the house.

“He’d restored the finest house in Ireland, poured his lifelong earnings and energies into creating something truly magnificent. He’d pay it if he could.

“He trusted his accountants, trustees, he thought he had a reliable relationship with

his landlord. Yet when the trustees came knocking, they rounded on him.”

Rossa Fanning SC, for Castletown Foundation Trust, acknowledged the family’s “significant emotional attachment” to the house.

But he added: “Lord Magan had no continuing rights to remain in the property…We’d changed the locks. We never wanted to do that in a vindictive way.”

Mr Magan Jr retorted: “Six hundred years of documented history of my family in this country; our family following Irish history through the years.

“Our chattels, our heritage gone, our named trounced.

That’s why I’m here.”

A plain man’s guide to the Budget

LAST week saw the ins and outs of Budget 2022 released.

A fiver here, a price hike there, much of it was covered in the media. But what about the nitty gritty? How will it actually affect you?

It really is imperative that we review our finances after every budget to see are we getting our entitlements.

Minister Donohoe said the Government was conscious of the cost-of-living pressures that are confronting citizens and businesses saying: “Budget 2022 meets the twin goals of investing in our future, of meeting the needs of today, while putting the public finances on a sustainable path” When you review the recent budget some of the figures are as follows — €87.6 billion will be allocated for public expenditure.

On a larger scale there will be €69.2 billion for core current expenditure and €11.1 billion will be made available in 2022 under the

National Development Plan.

Where will all this and other monies go? Maybe we don’t know or don’t care!

But there are certain areas that need to be reviewed to make sure we are availing of all our entitlements due to the boost for all income tax payers as bands and credits rise.

The standard rate income tax band widened by €1,500 and the personal tax credit, the employee tax credit and the income credit widened by €50 to keep pace with cost-of-living increases.

The State Pension personal rate increased to €252.30 and the personal rate plus qualifying adult to €422 and €480.30 for those aged under and over age 66 respectively.

The Christmas bonus will be paid for 2021.

The national minimum wage increases from €10.20 to €10.50 an hour.

The ceiling for the second USC rate band increased from €20,687 to €21,295 to prevent minimum wage earners from moving into the higher USC tax rate.

The exemption from the top rate of USC for all medical card holders and those over-70 earning less than €60,000 continues.

An income tax deduction

amounting to 30 per cent of the cost of vouched expenses for heat, electricity and broadband in respect of those incurred while working from home, which will be formalised through the Finance Bill. (Seemingly very few avail of these credits.)

And for businesses over €60 million is being made available to continue the commercial rates waiver which finished in September.

In Jim Power of Aviva’s commentary, he states: “The Employer Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS) remains in place in a graduated form until April 30. There will be no change to EWSS for the months of October and November; businesses availing of the EWSS on December 31, 2021 will continue to be supported until April 30, 2022; across December, January and February, a tworate structure of €151.50 and €203 will apply; for March and April 2022, the final two months of the scheme, a flat rate subsidy of €100 will be put in place. The reduced rate of Employers’ PRSI will no longer apply for these two months; and the scheme will close to new employers from the 1st of January 2022.”

There was no change to

the pension landscape but adjustments are expected to feature in the upcoming

Finance Bill which is due to be published at the end of this month.

According to Standard Life: “Following on from the Government’s proposals to reform and simplify the pensions landscape, we understand that measures specifically relating to PRSAs and AMRFs will be addressed in the Finance Bill, which is due to be published on or around October 21.”

And in the recent Pensions Commission report the commission states: “it has been unambiguously established that the current State pension system is not sustainable into the future and that change is needed.”

But no decision will be made on these recommendations until March 2022 “with a view to bringing a recommended response and implementation plan to Government, by the end of March 2022”.

In relation to the State Pension Age, the report recommended freezing the State Pension Age at 66 until 2028. It would then rise by three months a year so that it reached 67 in 2031, and by three months every two years thereafter to reach 68 in 2039.

Covid changes future work WHEN it comes to the world of work, Covid-19 has taught us an important lesson: that preparedness is everything.

In a new report, ‘The Changing Nature of Work: 30 Signals To Consider For A Sustainable Future’, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) examines how workplace developments are likely to influence the way we move forward as a society.

One key finding? That planning for disruption is critical, not only to enable a rapid response to external shocks, but to ensure that any necessary adaptation is inclusive of marginalised populations.

Here are five more things we’ve learned from the report.

1. THE PANDEMIC HAS HIGHLIGHTED THE EM PHASIS WE NEED TO PUT ON WELLBEING Remote working has blurred the line between work and home life for many people; intensifying discussions around work-life balance and adding stress to daily life. This is particularly true for women, who have experienced higher levels of anxiety during the pandemic, according to a multinational survey by French international development organisation Focus 2030.

In its Covid-19 Risks Outlook, published in May 2020, the World Economic Forum noted that up to 70% of workers felt that Covid-related

restrictions had led to the most stressful period in their career. As a result, many of us are reconsidering what really matters to us at work.

Meanwhile, the pandemic has exacerbated existing social inequalities, making it harder for marginalised communities to access healthcare, education and work opportunities.

In May 2021, the World Health Assembly recommended that governments incorporate mental health support planning into preparedness for emergencies such as the pandemic.

The physical and mental health impacts of the pandemic should also be considered by employers when

reimagining future work models, the UNDP report suggests.

2. DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY WILL CHANGE THE WAY WE WORK FOREVER We are now deep into the Fourth Industrial Revolution, with leading- edge technologies like robotics, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things shifting the balance of the way we operate at work. By 2025, according to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs report, humans and machines will spend almost an equal amount of time on tasks in the workplace.

This dovetails with the UNDP’s report, which suggests that so-called ‘superjobs’ – roles that

Menstrual cycle linked to cardiac health, study finds A NEW study, published in the journal Menopause, characterises cycle-length changes over the menopause transition and found that women whose cycle increased in length two years before their final menstrual period had better measures of vascular health than those who had stable cycle lengths during this transition.

In combination with other menopause-related characteristics and health measures, changes in cycle length could help clinicians predict which patients may

be at greater or lesser risk of cardiovascular disease and recommend preventive strategies.

“Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women, and the risk significantly increases after midlife, which is why we think that menopause could contribute to this disease,” says lead author Samar El Khoudary, associate professor of epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public Health.

“Menopause is not just a click of a button. It’s

a multistage transition where women experience many changes that could put them at higher risk for cardiovascular disease.

Change in cycle length, which is linked to hormone levels, is a simple metric that might tell us who is more at risk.”

The average duration of a menstrual cycle is about 28 days, but this can vary widely among women.

Those with frequent short cycles spend more time with high estrogen levels compared to those with fewer long cycles, and this

variation in hormone levels could explain why long and irregular cycles during reproductive years have been linked with cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, osteoporosis, and other conditions.

Compared to women with stable cycles, those in the late-increase group had significantly more favoUrable measures of artery hardness and thickness, indicating a smaller risk of cardiovascular disease. Women in the early-increase group had the poorest measures of artery health.

integrate human and machine skills – will require careful consideration of human-machine interaction protocols and ethics. One example of this is ensuring that AI systems are free from bias.

As process-driven activities are taken up increasingly by machines, there will be a demand for humans to develop new soft skills, like empathy and creativity, in order to adapt to a rise in more knowledgeintensive sectors, such as financial services and product development.

3. WHEN IT COMES TO NEW WORK MODELS, WE’RE STILL FINDING OUR WAY The world of work is no longer centred around traditional employment patterns. The Forum’s Platform on Digital Economy and New Value Creation estimates that 70% of new value created in the economy over the next decade will be based on digitally enabled platform business models – yet nearly half of the world’s population is not connected to the internet.

That comes with its own challenges, like a lack of job security and social protection.

The UNDP believes that in the future we will see a blend of best practice from across the private and public sectors, with new social protection nets adapted to emerging work models and improved digital infrastructure.

4. THE RIGHT CONDITIONS AT WORK CAN HELP FOS TER INCLUSION A potential downside of advances in technology is that it could deepen inequalities, according to the UNDP report.

For instance, the authors note, “Women have less time for reskilling, ups-killing and seeking jobs because they

spend much more time than men on unpaid care work.”

They call for skills and innovation gaps to be improved through a process of lifelong learning, on-the-job experience and staff involvement in shaping the way organisations create value alongside more formal qualifications.

More inclusive work settings – from wider corridors to areas designed for specific tasks and even virtual reality spaces to reduce isolation among remote workers – are also set to become commonplace as we adjust to life in the wake of the pandemic.

5. ENTREPRENEURSHIP IS TRANSFORMING THE WAY WE DO BUSINESS With technology like crowdfunding, blockchain and online banking democratising access to investment, there is now greater opportunity for disruptive ideas to take root, says the UNDP. It predicts that start-ups will lead the way in adopting new organisational structures and practices, as they have already done with digital collaboration tools.

The organisation also sees a role for entrepreneurialism within larger and more traditional companies, supporting a culture of innovation and embedding lateral thinking, autonomy, proactivity, market awareness and risk-taking.

Whatever the future of work turns out to be, the UNDP sees one thing as non-negotiable: “The interventions we create should focus on solving the problems of tomorrow based on foresight, with humans at the centre of transformation.” *Republished with permission of the World Economic Forum

Haymarket, Edinburgh Haymarket might not be the first area of the city most people would think of visiting, it’s a little way out of the centre and away from the main attractions, but it has a certain charm to it that makes it one of my favourite places to be. Haymarket feels like a separate community from the rest of the city. It has a long row of shops, its own train station, restaurants and pubs, and even its own cathedral. You could miss St Mary’s Cathedral if you didn’t know it was there.

As you walk down the high street of busy shops and cafés, the cathedral rises up behind the roofs, on a side street. It’s worth seeking out if only to see the incredible Eduardo Paolozzi stained glass window.

A two-minute walk away is the town, where you can shop for handmade chocolates and whiskey, and see the old castle, which is now a hotel. And then there are the woodland walks that meander around the town and take you back towards the beach.

4. Bruce-field Estate Brucefield Estate in Forestmill, Clackmannanshire, dates back 700 years to when it was part of the Barony of Schenbothy. The estate was first owned by the Stewarts of Rosyth. Brucefield Estate is now owned by Victoria Bruce-Winkler, a biologist who returned home to manage the Estate in 2012. The family has ancestry dating back to Robert the Bruce. The estate covers 420 hectares of semi-ancient birch, oak, and Scots pine woodland, pasture, and arable farmland, dotted with dry stone dyke walls. The 10-year wildlife plan monitors and manages the diverse habitats on the

estate which include a wealth of wildlife including bats, barn and tawny owls, pine martens, red squirrels, rare wildflowers, butterflies, and plant species.

The estate is located off the A907, a 40-minute drive from Glasgow and 50 minutes from Edinburgh. The Estate is a 30-minute cycle from Alloa train station along the almost traffic-free Inner Forth Route.

5. Dundee The city of Dundee has many attractions and, in some ways, it’s an underrated, lesser-visited Scottish city, but there’s one thing in particular that makes it unique: I can’t think of any other Scottish city with the kind of street art

United to increase daily flights into New Jersey UNITED Airlines will increase its frequency from Dublin to its New York/Newark hub from once to twice daily, starting Next April.

The additional year-round service joins United’s existing seasonal direct service from Dublin to Chicago, as well as seasonal direct ser-

vices from Dublin to Washington Dulles and Shannon to New York/Newark that are planned to resume in 2022.

The additional flight from Dublin is part of United’s largest transatlantic expansion in its history announced today, including 10 new routes and five new desti-

nations – Amman, Jordan; Bergen, Norway; Azores, Portugal; Mallorca, Spain and Tenerife in the Spanish Canary Islands.

The new routes, which are set to begin in Spring 2022, are not served by any other North American carrier.

Additionally, next year,

United will add new flights to five popular European destinations — Berlin, Dublin, Milan, Munich and Rome, as well as launch seven routes that were interrupted due to the pandemic from Bangalore, Frankfurt, Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, Nice and Zurich. Flights are subject to

government approval.

“United is a valued customer serving Dublin Airport for more than two decades and we are particularly delighted to see this increase in frequency, it’s a very welcome boost to transatlantic connectivity” said Dublin Airport Managing Director

Vincent Harrison.

Arts Council awards €13m. to 20 artists, & 163 bodies THE Arts Council has announced that it is awarding 20 artists and 163 arts organisations some €12.8 million through Arts Grant Funding, a scheme under the agency’s 10- year strategy, Making Great Art Work. The council received 217 applications and was able to fund 183 recipients, making this year the biggest year for Arts Grant Funding so far.

The purpose of Arts Grants Funding is to ensure that there is a breadth of high-quality arts activity and programmes throughout the country. It offers flexible support for a fixed period of time, and in so doing responds to the needs of those who are making, presenting and supporting work.

Maureen Kennelly, Director, Arts Council said: “The breadth and range of applications is truly inspiring to see. Artists and organisations have suffered disproportionately through the pandemic and it is heartening to see the resilience of the arts sector. It is also encouraging to know that while we support these 20 artists and 163 organisations, they will in turn create thrilling new work and support the public as we recover together.

Prof. Kevin Rafter, Chair of the Arts Council said; “This funding is another significant support for artists and arts organisations.

Demand for funding was greater than it has ever been and the quality of applications was exceptionally high.”

The funding will go to artists and arts organisations in 19 counties across Ireland, including Kilkenny, Wexford and Waterford.

There are six new organisa-

tions that have received Arts Council funding for the first time.

Match in the Dark is a newly registered partnership between Dani Gill and Brendan MacEvilly. It is concerned with: audience development in literature outside of the literary festival circuit, leveraging greater funding towards literature from local authorities and regional stakeholders.

Tipparary Dance Platform is responsible for a number of actions such as supporting professional dancers in Ireland, creating original dance work.

Bullaun Press aims to bring to Irish readers a diverse range of literature translated into English.

The press will promote the art of translation and engage with diaspora communities in Ireland.

Company Philip Connaughton is an ambitious, exciting dance company that engages with important issues to ask questions about society and the world around us.

Con Brio present national and international musicians at the top of their field alongside emerging new talent. Whilst focussing on a classical repertoire, the series features contemporary compositions and regularly commissions new work; particularly from Irish composers.

In Donegal we helped with accessible swings and seating as well as a sensory den so that everyone could enjoy the outdoor space at Ray Community Centre together. More actions ‘needed’ so as to reach 2030’s energy targets THE need for further immediate action to reach our 2030’s energy renovation targets was stress at the Irish Green Building Council’s annual energy renovation conference.

An international study developed by E3G for the Renovate

Europe Campaign analysing the share of funds in the National Recovery and Resilience Plans (NRRPs) dedicated to energy renovation of buildings was launched at the conference.

The study found that Ireland needed to improve its plan. In

particular, Ireland failed to integrate how renovation of existing buildings could achieve multiple strategic objectives including improvement in health and wellbeing, increased employment and use of sustainable materials.

It also recommended the need for better monitoring and aggregation of data to measure impact, in short what is not counted doesn’t count.

Adrian Joyce, Campaign Director at Renovate Europe said: “The unprecedented addi-

tional injection of public funds presented by the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) is a golden opportunity to set our building stock firmly on the path to achieving our climate targets. But these renovations must be done properly, and the

money must be spent well. And for this, we need deep (or staged deep) renovations. The Study sets out 9 recommendations that would allow Member States to implement transformative Plans and meet the Renovation Wave objectives.”

How to stop hiccups ANDREW MCDONALD HYPNOTHERAPIST

BUDDY Holly and Michael Jackson shared the same talent for using a singing technique few artists even seriously attempt, never mind master. A vocal hiccup sounds a little like a singer struggling for air or gasping. Holly’s and Jackson’s work was full of it. It added texture to their records and cemented their place in the hearts of music aficionados of all ages.

The former’s Peggy Sue and the latter’s Thriller are two great examples of where they utilised this sound but are far from the only demonstrations of their innate skill.

If you’re somebody with a good voice and the ability to master the vocal hiccup, maybe you should consider performing publicly. Whilst many people can carry a tune, few can add depth to their singing in this way.

Chances are though, your only experience of hic-

cupping is of the nuisance variety. All of us suffer occasionally. Whether from eating too quickly, drinking too much fizz, going swimming, supping a few pints or even just appearing spontaneously, hiccups can be a real pain. In fact, one of the most Googled health questions is “how can I get rid of my hiccups”?

Unfortunately, scientific research on how to get rid of hiccups is sketchy. For a start, how would investigations be planned? It is extremely rare that anyone can make themselves hiccup at will or that they get long-term advance warning of a bout. Even the same activities produce different results. You could drink a litre of lemonade one day and be absolutely fine, a few sips another and you find yourself in a full-on episode of “hic”.

Fortunately, folk cures do have some success with hiccups. There are of course some which are wackier than others and carry somewhat less of a guarantee of working. Trying to figure out who misses you, putting wet things on your forehead and grasping your tongue with a hand-

kerchief, preferably clean, are probably in this second category.

Things which do work however include changing your breathing. Personally, I find holding my breath usually gets rid of my hiccups. A minute or so is sufficient. Much longer than this brings a higher level of guarantee but only because you’ll probably kill more than your hiccupping. Given that’s a bit like throwing the baby out with the bathwater, you could instead try breathing into a paper bag, pulling your knees to your chest whilst leaning forward, drinking water from the opposite side of a glass whilst bending over.

Getting scared, laughing spontaneously, rubbing the back of your neck and gargling with cold water are other things people use to get rid of their hiccups.

Finally, if you do find hiccups are a persistent problem, consult your GP to find out if there’s an underlying cause which can be treated. Alternatively, you could give something like hypnotherapy a go which has a good track record of treating minor complaints too.

You lose out on the chance that a quick re visit to a local business will solve any problem, this versus the long telephone wait obeying some machine’s instructions while you waste hours waiting to talk to somebody who in the end does not have the authority to help you. It is so true that local business customer service is better because it has to be, they depend on you and will go that extra mile to ensure they have a happy customer because they want to see you again and again.

Local business create local jobs, they provide the training, skilling and up skilling, and

education of their staff to go further to provide a service, goods or product that will provide value for you.

Be it a new business or long established they all need one thing and that is your support and they in turn will support you in making sure you are a happy and longtime customer.

The experience of shopping, using a service, or spending time in a café ,bar or restaurant should be a rewarding one .You should not only admire a locally manufactured product, piece of art and craft, or food stuff but you should also be proud of your close proximity to its creation. A sense of pride that you are purchasing the very best that is available in your locality.

Local business will interact with you to provide the service you require. You can discuss your requirements, negotiate a deal, make a plan, work together outside the normal

parameters, be more exact or more flexible, you can work together to best suit both of your needs.

You can build a relationship with a business owner or manager so that they know how best to serve you. They can get to know your likes, taste, style, what pleases you and they can inform you of new arrivals, trends, products.

They can order stock with you in mind, they can look out for you.

Local businesses create growth in your local economy, community and

neighborhood, Their success encourages others to set up new business, expand existing business, develop stronger and more sustainable communities and encourages more investment from local and national government agencies. Success builds on success, community builds on strong community efforts.

When people see good they want to be part of that good, when people see great they want to be associated with creating that great. A thriving local economy encourages more people to explore the

THERE are several Senior Organizations with local NGOs, Alliance groups and councils across Ireland. One of the national organisations in Ireland is the Irish Senior Citizens Parliament. This week we would like to let our readers know what this parliament has to offer.

What do they offer and advocate for our seniors?

The following covers a few areas of interest starting with their Charter of Rights ISCP Charter Of Rights 1. The right to live an independent, active and full life

without discrimination on the grounds of age, gender, marital status, family status, sexual orientation, disability, religion, ethnic origin, member of travelling community.

2. The right to an adequate pension which enables an older person to have a decent standard of living.

3. The right to appropriate housing suitable to meet an older person’s needs.

4. The right to suitable longterm care including Nursing Home Services that are affordable and that will meet the needs of older

people.

5. The right to an adequate comprehensive Health Service based on a positive commitment to the health of older people.

6. The right to an effective Home Support/Care Service that is properly funded and that is organised in cooperation with local Community Care Services.

7. The right to participate in formal and informal education including third level.

8. The right of older workers to Pre-Retirement Planning Courses including time off for such courses. Access to

The right to participate in Bodies which deal with the concerns of older people and to have their views considered.

Older People Must Have Access To 1. Services which will enable them to live and age with dignity in their own homes for as long as they wish.

When it comes to income they believe Older People Must Have Access To All Older People must have access to a decent income in retirement which will allow them to live with dignity a life, free from poverty and constant worry in decent well heated homes with good nutrition. This will support and enable them to fully participate, as equals, with all across the lifecycle.

In retirement the State Pension is the only source of income for many Older People, and it must be set at a rate to allow for equal participation by Older People in society. It must reflect and fully take account of the Cost of Ageing for Older People.

Older People in receipt of Occupational Pensions must be treated with equity and fair-

ness and the State must never again impose levies on their scheme funds. Their rules and regulations must be transparent and have remedies for dispute resolution which are fair and do not involve costly litigation.

And when it comes to health Older People Must Have • Full Access to all essential health services based solely on a positive commitment to the health of Older People and free from any age-related biases or discrimination.

• Equality of treatment for older people should not be withheld based on age alone and must be for clear and agreed clinical reasons.

• Access to properly funded Home Help Services organised locally to enable Older People to continue to remain at home.

• When the time arrives for the Older Person to access long term care it must be on a needs assessment basis which will enable the older person to move to a care setting appropriate to their need and in which their autonomy, choices and wishes are both respected and implemented.

Feature THESE notes were first published in the R.S.A.I. Journal of 1872 by Patrick Watters.

He describes Kilkenny City as greatly fallen off from the early 1800s. But there was one remarkable improvement and that was in the approaches to the City.

“The rising generation who, when travelling know only the luxury of the railway carriage and think it slow if it glides along at twenty miles an hour. They cannot picture the days when the stage coach departed Kilkenny at eight o’clock in the morning and arrived in Dublin at six o’clock in the evening. The passengers if active were requested to get out and walk the steep hills at Ballitore and Killcullen. These were then the days considered of easy travelling compared to the previous generation when there was not a daily conveyance.

The road to Dublin ran through Magdalen Street up Windgap Hill, and the road to Cork through Walkin Street,when neither the Ormonde road or the Dublin road existed.”

Blackmill Bridge This is an extract from the Presentments to the Kilkenny Assizes in 1714. “Whereas the greate roade from Limerick and Cashell to this citty within the Liberties is extremely out of repair and impassable in the Winter. We therefore do present the sum of Thirteen Pounds eight shillings and six pence to be raised on the four Parishes and paid onto Stephen Haydocke for paving of four hundred yards in length and four yards in breadth, at two pence per yard, beginning at the liberty post and ending at four hundred yards.

That Stephen Haydocke and Matthew Knaresborough be over seers of the said work and that the Parish of St.Canice doe give six days labour for the same.”

Cashel being named as the terminus of a road from Kilkenny may seem strange to us now, but it was then an important city and in all probability the highway to the South. The road to Cork did not exist as it does at present. It was taken that this great road to Cashel began at Blackmill ,up by Kennys Well , Kilcreene, Drakeland over the hill at Ballycuddihy, and through Kilmanagh. It must have gone

by Dama, for at a Presentment made at the Assizes in 1718.

“We find that at the July Sessions in 1711, the sum of Five Pounds, six shillings, and five pence was presented and then ordered by the Court to be raised in the four parishes and paid onto John Archdeckin for breaking and paving the Rock of Damagh. The worke being 284 yards at 4 pence per yard, and the said sum was paid to Mr. Robert Connell, the then Public Receiver, is still in his hands and not paid to John Archdeckin though the work is completely finished.”

At the 1718 Assizes the Presentment was made for the Blackmill Bridge which fixes a definite date for the bridge.

dangerous for passengers and travellers who go on the same. We therefore present that the sum of five pounds be forthwith raised in throughout this City and County thereof and paid unto Ebenezer Warren and Edward Evans for and towards the building and new making of two sufficient arches , with lime and stone, over the said river with side walls thereon three high and two foot thick. The said bridge to be ten foot wide in the clear from side to side.

Who are fit persons to see the same done accordingly.”

“We find the old pavement on the High Road leading from the Coal pitts to this Citty, in the parish of St. John beginning at

the Liberty post and so forward to the Shrahan Sanny to be much out of repaire and unpassable for Carryers and Travellers who go the said road. Therefore Present that the sume of five pounds be forthwith raised in and throughout the four parishes for the paveing and gravelling and well amending the same beginning and ending at the places aforesaid and paid unto Oliver Cramer and James Davis who are fit persons to see the same done accordingly.”

The following informs us exactly where Shrahan Sanny was and is.

The brook can still be seen today, more than 300 years since it was first noted. At the Lent assizes of 1817 a presentment was made that the commissioners were to form, fence, level and make 194 Perches of the new intended Mail coach road between Kilkenny and Kilcullen bridge through Castle comer and Athy commencing at Johns Green near the new Military Barracks and ending at James Nowlans bounds on the lands of Glendine. at a cost of £351/15/4d. One twelfth to be raised at this Assizes and at each succeeding assizes until all is raised.

John MacKenna is the author of twenty books. His new book, I Knew This Place - a collection of his essays from the RTE programme Sunday Miscellany - was published by The Harvest Press and his Selected Short Stories was published in 2021 by New Island Books. He teaches creative writing at Maynooth University and at The Hedge School on the Moone.

Pauline McLynn grew up in Galway, and first started acting while studying history of art at Trinity Colege Dublin.

She shot to fame playing the inimitable Mrs Doyle in Father Ted, and has appeared in numerous other film, stage and television roles including Libby Croker in the Channel 4 comedy drama Shameless, Tip Haddem in the BBC One comedy Jam & Jerusalem, and Yvonne Cotton in the BBC soap opera EastEnders.

Her books include children’s fiction, general fiction and literary fiction.

Michael Murphy is a broadcaster, psychoanalyst, author and lecturer. He has worked in RTE as an award-winning Newscaster and television Producer/ Director, and for the past six years he has had a psychoanalytic residency on the RTE afternoon television Today Show.

Michael is a Registered Practitioner member of the Association for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy in Ireland.

He works full-time as a French-trained Psychoanalyst at his practice in Dublin.

In 2009, Michael published a number one best-selling literary memoir, At Five in the Afternoon, dealing with his battle with prostate cancer. A sequel, The House of Pure Being was published in 2013 and reached the top ten. His poetry collection The Republic of Love was also published in 2013, and was the first poetry book to enter the top ten list in Ireland since Seamus Heaney won the Nobel Prize. Michael’s second collection of poetry A Chaplet of Roses was published in 2016.

Michael Murphy’s Book of Dreams, an analysis of 65 contemporary Irish dreams, was published in 2017. His latest book is entitled The Ministry of Dreams – Collected Poems, and was published in November 2019. The Irish Independent has described Michael as “an author of importance.

i.m. Tom Hunt The last time we saw you was here at this table, you were spinning us yarns of the journeys you’d made.

Your big hands were open, the lines mapped your palms and you spoke of the voyage about to begin.

The Pyrenees rose like a dream in your words, your heart was out there on the sunlit Sierra and as I listened I imagined you walking, your wild, silver beard in the fresh morning breeze.

Your step was contented, your mind always racing, your memory still on the years put behind.

You were the traveller, your weighty bag flying, your eyes taking in all there was to be seen.

The last time we spoke, you were laughing, as ever, refusing to bow to the weight on your soul; you said we’d talk in the days that would follow, and you wished me the best as I hung up the phone.

Now you’ve gone on your journey and this time alone, I catch a brief glimpse of you rounding a bend and I hope, when I reach it, I’ll find you there, seated, that smile in your eyes and your hand reaching out.

Don’t be too hard on yourself

A campaign to knit jumpers for rescued hens was instigated by Father Ted star Pauline McLynn, better known as Mrs Doyle from the Channel 4 sit-com.

Instead of making the tea, she began making woollen body warmers for the featherless birds, as thousands were due to be rescued from battery farms.

Having spent their lives in cages, the hens do not have feathers to keep warm.

Ms McLynn is patron of an Irish animal rescue sanctuary.

With those few lines of an introduction, Pauline McLynn was introduced to the writers’ course. Pauline, who hails from Co Clare, is one of those people who, with her endearing personality, would fit in with any group.

And so it was with this group Miss McLynn spoke passionately about writing and its great contribution to life. “If it is only keeping a diary and lashing in a few words every day, that can be so therapeutic,” she told the group.

“If your writing develops into poetry or prose, then that is wonderful,” said the Fr Ted star.

“If I was to give advice, it would be two fold: One, write something, no matter how small, every day, and two, don’t be too hard on yourself ”, said Pauline.

Let’s paint this Kilkenny green NOW the latest crazy among our local authorities and their tourism departments to use murals to brighten up the visible ends of our buildings to cover the plain concrete plastered walls why now go green? Paint them all green? I can hear our readers say. No paint them as part of our fight against climate and use the green breathing murals. I kid you not. We have now the ability to use paint that absorbs carbon and toxins from the atmosphere to create clear air for our living and breathing city.

We can take a lead from our Polish friends. Warsaw, Poland became the latest city to feature public art projects that also clean city air, as a giant mural made of special, sun-activated, smog-cleaning pigments was painted by local artists.

Organized by the sportswear company Converse as part of their City-Forests campaign, the mural was produced using photocatalytic paint with titanium dioxide that attracts airborne pollutants before converting them into harmless nitrates through a chemical process involving sunlight.

Through this process the mural reportedly purifies the surrounding air equal to 720 trees, and when the campaign

is finished, the murals spread across several countries should be doing the work of 3,000.

The mural was erected on a building facing a popular metro stop and features a collection of smiling flowers entangled among high rise buildings.

Polish artists Maciek Polak and Dawid Ryski designed the image, which was executed by the local artist hub Good Looking Studio, involving expert muralists.

Amid the flowers are the words “Create Together for Tomorrow,” a positive message to inspire change, which Converse officials feel will help welcome people who are returning to their daily commutes after periods of COVID-19 isolation.

Now this is ‘art’ and not graffiti. Paintings like this could replace AzzoWazEre and add colour to these derelict buildings exposed walls to tourists.

We have a ‘Green’ representing our city now in the government as a junior minister and I am sure with Malcolm’s help we can make these wonderful initiatives a reality and kill two birds with the one stone, possibly not the best turn of phases, and help Kilkenny to become a greener city and an example to other Municipal Districts across Europe. It could be a boost to

the education of our students who will very soon be heading to their daily classes in three new schools on the western side of our urban development.

Like across Europe we should make it part of the Planning the new schools have solar panels and consider adding solar panels to the 3000 proposed houses that are to be built. Now that would be painting Kilkenny green.

(Kilkenny County Council is offering community groups an opportunity this year to promote anti- litter and antigraffiti awareness in their local community. The grant is to mobilise community groups to care for their local environment by decreasing the impact of litter by its removal and to promote a social message locally to encourage everyone to put litter in its rightful place – in a bin. )

Gorey X Factor goes to Romania

ANOTHER local success story developed on a different path, here in Ireland. The Romanian born, Irish adopted Stefan J O’Doyle was born in the city of Satu Mare situated in northern Romania, where he was adopted from by a wonderful Irish family and developed the love for music.

Now he is discovering his Romanian roots during his participation at the X Factor Romania, after he amazed the jury with his performance at the auditions.

As a Child growing up, Stefan J Doyle lived in Gorey, Co. Wexford where his parents Catherine Jordan

and Stephen Doyle were from. His mother Catherine travelled to Romania in 1990, with the soul aim of giving her heart to a child or baby who needed a better life. As luck would have it, and after much tribulations, Catherine took home a little baby boy.

Catherine put all of her heart

and soul into making sure this child would never have to experience the life that he could have had, had he been left there. This little boy was named Stefan.

Talking to Mr. J Doyle, the 31-year-old spoke very openly about his experiences growing up in Ireland as an adopted Romanian. “It was quite odd and profoundly lonely at times, as I would be remarked upon for my skin colour and features, that they were different” Stefan said, “I wasn’t sure if I was ever going to fit in, but once I found my talent, it seemed to bring people, and friends closer to me and that talent of course was entertainment” Stefan grew up an only child in Ireland, and always wondered of his blood relatives back in Romania. His mother had always showed her unconditional support to Stefan in finding his family if he so wished but as he said to us “I just never felt that it was the right time”. This year however, Stefan did in fact take the leap off the edge and search for his birth rite, with massive help from his loving wife to be Samantha, and Ileana a lady who runs a facebook page dedicated to finding your birth families, Stefan found his family, not only his birth mother and father, but also three brothers

and two sisters!

Stefan studied music all his life through the royal academy of music, and various orchestras. Stefan started off on the violin, an instrument that seemed to come naturally to him perhaps due to his Romanian blood. In later years, he began to play and study the piano. Once he had a firm grasp on that, he began to find his voice, a voice that would in later life no less, take him further than he ever expected.

In this year of 2021, Stefan was contacted by no other

than XFACTOR Romania!

They invited him to come on the show and audition in front of the judges and a live audience. Stefan grabbed this massive opportunity with both hands and off he went!

Landing back in Romania after 30 years, Stefan greeted the beautiful country and the stage with open arms.

In doing so, Stefan’s dream finally came true, when he received the first four Yes of the X Factor season and was put straight through to the boot-camp stage!

Healthy Halloween pizzas Preparation and cooking time Prep: 20 mins Cook: 10 mins Serves: 4

Let little witches and wizards make their own healthy Halloween dinner with this pizza. You can add extra toppings, using whatever meat and veggies they like...

Ingredients • 200g strong white flour • 200g strong wholewheat flour • 1 tsp or 7g sachet easy-blend dried yeast • 250ml warm water • For the topping • 300g passata • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 1 tbsp olive or rapeseed oil • 75g grated mozzarella • 10 black olives • handful cherry tomatoes , halved • handful basil leaves, to serve Method STEP 1 Mix the flours and yeast

with a pinch of salt in a food processor fitted with a dough blade, or combine in a bowl.

Pour in the water and mix to a soft dough, then work for 1 min in a processor or 5 mins by hand. Remove the dough, divide into 4 pieces and roll out on a lightly floured surface to rounds about 15cm across.

Lift onto heavily oiled baking sheets.

STEP 2 Mix the passata with the garlic, oil and a little seasoning.

Spread over the dough to within 2cm of the edges.

Scatter with the mozzarella.

Halve the olives and tomatoes.

Place an olive in the centre of each pizza to make the spider’s body. Cut the rest into little legs and arrange them around the spider bodies. Dot the tomatoes here and there.

Leave to rise for 20 mins. Heat oven to 240C/ fan 220C/gas 9 or the highest setting.

STEP 3 Bake the pizza for 10-12 mins until crisp and golden around the edges. Scatter with the basil to serve.

Halloween punch Make a mocktail for your Halloween party using cherry juice, chilli, cinnamon and ginger, then garnish with edible fangs. Add vodka for those who prefer it Ingredients • 2l cherry juice • peel from 3 oranges , pared with a vegetable peeler • 1 thumb-sized red chilli , pierced a few times but left whole • 3 cinnamon sticks • 10 cloves • 6 slices ginger • Dracula’s fangs sweets (available from sweet shops), to serve, optional For an alcoholic punch (optional)

• 200ml vodka , or 25ml per glass Method STEP 1 Tip the cherry juice, orange peel, chilli, cinnamon sticks, cloves and ginger into a large saucepan.

Simmer for 5 mins, then turn off the heat. Leave to cool, then chill for at least 4 hrs, or up to 2 days – the longer you leave it the more intense the flavours. If serving to young children, take the chilli out after a few hours.

STEP 2 When you’re ready to serve, pour the juice into a jug. Serve in glass bottles or glasses and pop a straw in each. If you’re adding vodka, do so at this stage. Dangle a fangs sweet from each glass.

Residual Sugar (RS) The amount of sugar remaining in a wine that has not been converted into ALCOHOL when FERMENTATION stops. Less than 2g/l is imperceptible. Some sweet wines will have upwards of 25g/l.

Solera A system of fractional blending that gives Sherry its character. A complex process by which several vintages are blended together over many years in a building known as a Solera, before bottling.

Structure Tasting term. To describe a wine as “wellstructured” is very complimentary. It means it has an “architecture” of fruit, ACIDITY, ALCOHOL and TANNINS, that should allow it to age and stop it from being bland or wishy-washy.

Sulphur Dioxide An important and age-old additive in winemaking.

Sulphur is an antiseptic and antioxidant. If used correctly it should be imperceptible.

Super-Tuscans Ground breaking Italian wines that deliberately ignored local wine laws to make premium wines using outlawed “international” grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Tannin A naturally occurring chemical that helps to preserve red wine and adds a savoury edge to the flavour.

Tannins are present in grape stems, pips and skins.

Tannin also comes from oak ageing of wine. As the grape ripens on the vine so do tannins, making them less astringent. Bottle age also lessens tannins, which will eventually precipitate as sediment.

Unfiltered Wine Wine that has been bottled without filtration.

Fashionable in quality wines, it avoids a process which many believe strips wine of some flavour and complexity.

Varietal Labelling The practice of naming the grape or grapes on the label – still uncommon in classic European regions, adopted widely elsewhere over the past 20 years.

Vitis Vinifera The wine vine. Almost all important wines are made from this species.

Volatile Acidity (VA) Tasting terms that wine bores often trot out to impress. A real fault however, ranging from a vaguely sharp smell, to a horrible vinegar aroma and taste. Caused by bacterial infection, especially of acetobacter (acetic acid).

Yeast Other than grapes, the essential element in FERMENTATION. Yeast is a single-cell organism that is naturally present on the surface of grapes, but in commercial winemaking is more likely to be laboratory-grown. It devours grape sugar, converting it into Ethanol (ALCOHOL).

The Coen Brothers meet Wes Anderson in this 2019 black comedy thriller steered by two brilliant young female leads. Set in a snowy fishing town in Maine, Blow the Man Down follows sisters, played

by Morgan Saylor and Sophie Lowe, who try to hide the body of a man after he attacked one of them and she fought back. While on their crime caper, they find themselves digging up the town matriarchs’ dark secrets, spinning this into a noir mystery. It’s as wonderful as it sounds.

Following in the footsteps of Palm Springs, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things is a 2021 rom-com exploring the lives of its protagonists through a time loop. Katheryn Newton and Kyle Allen star as Margaret and Mark, two teens repeating the same day over and over again. Their meet cute involves saving someone from being knocked into a pool by a beach ball. Charming and heartfelt, this is solid if not totally perfect viewing.

IT looks like Squid Game’s reign has finally come to an end. When the Korean thriller premiered on Netflix back in mid-September, it quickly jumped into the number one spot thanks to its premise that felt like The Hunger Games meets The Cabin in the Woods. And for a month, Squid Game held onto the title as the top show

on Netflix, eventually beating Bridgerton’s record as the most-watched new series on the streaming platform. In its first 28 days alone, it drew in a whopping 111 million viewers.

But now, there’s a show that has finally taken the crown from Squid Game: the psychological horror series You. When the third season of You premiered, within 24 hours,

the series quickly jumped into the top spot on the website, moving Squid Game into the No. 2 position. Fans of the show have been highly anticipating the newest season, where Joe Goldberg (played by Gossip Girl ‘s Penn Badgley) and his girlfriend Love (The Haunting of Hill House’s Victoria Pedretti) prepare to have a baby together. However,

when they move into a suburban neighborhood, Joe finds himself falling into his old ways when he becomes obsessed with a neighbor across the street. Anticipation for the new season was heightened even more when Netflix announced just a few days ahead of its premiere that the show had already been renewed for a fourth season.

Check on 1984 on Amazon Prime ON rare occasions, novels become culturally synonymous with the ideas they express.

When describing a person as ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’, for example, one can infer that they are alternately cruel and kind, even without reading Robert Louis Stevenson’s

That’s certainly the case for George Orwell’s 1984, which stars John Hurt.

Now a staple of high school reading lists, its name has been used to dictate totalitarianism since its initial publication in 1949. Labeling something as Orwellian has

become so common that, when conservative political cartoonist Gary Varvel made a comic comparing former President Trump’s removal from Twitter to the book’s vision of dystopia, it became a widely mocked meme.

Michael Radford’s movie adaptation of Orwell’s book,

which hit cinema in 1984, was able to adapt the story without cowering within its massive cultural footprint.

It’s a stunning adaptation that remembers the story at the centre of the book and lets it live out.

1984 has now arrived on Amazon Prime.

The Vast of Night is a curious indie sci-fi flick (2019) from debut director Andrew Patterson that plays with narrative in clever ways.

Long, sweeping shots carry us after two young radio workers who investigate an audio frequency they think could be traced to aliens. The distinctive 1950s New Mexico setting, and characters delivering monologues with the smooth intonations of those on radio, all build an eerie atmosphere with satisfying payoff.

A sublime 2020 anthology that doesn’t drop the ball across its five films. Small Axe is a collection of distinct stories about the lives of West Indian immigrants in London from the ‘60s to the ‘80s. They’re all directed by Steve McQueen, who’s working at his exquisite best (when doesn’t he?), crafting stories such as courtroom drama Mangrove, based on the 1971 trial of the Mangrove Nine and starring Black Panther’s Letitia Wright. Take a seat and devour this massive achievement.

Things that can impair your recovery from workouts EOIN EVERARD

Today, I’ll start that discussion with a focus on seven factors that can impair your workout recovery: Stress Exercise is a potent stressor, and that’s why it works so well: by encountering and overcoming the stress of a heavy squat, or a sprint uphill, or an intense Pilates our fitness improves to make the next encounter a little easier. Unfortunately, dealing with any kind of stress diverts valuable manpower away from workout recovery.

Recent research reports that “mental stress” impairs workout recovery, and it doesn’t speak in generalities. 31 undergrads were assessed for stress levels using a battery of psychological tests, then engaged in a heavy lower body strength workout. At an hour post workout, students in the high stress group had regained 38 percent of their leg strength, while students in the low stress group had regained 60 percent of their strength back. An earlier study showed that tissue healing – which our muscles must do in order to recover – is impaired during times of stress. Students

received puncture wounds to their mouths, and half went on vacation and the other half had exams. On average, the exam group took three days longer for their wounds to heal. You aren’t healing puncture wounds (usually) after training, but the muscle recovery process is extremely similar and places similar demands on the body.

More Workouts Sometimes, people get the funny notion that the benefits of exercise accrue as you exercise – in real time. These people often assume that more is always better, and that a certain way to get lean and fit is to cram as much exercise into your schedule as humanly possible, because it’ll only make you fitter. These are the people you see spending hours at the gym every day on the same machines, using the same weights, looking and performing the same, year after year. Well, they’re wrong. Fitness accrues after workouts and during recovery. You don’t get stronger, faster, and fitter working out. You get stronger, fitter, and faster recovering from working out. And don’t be misled by those incredibly fit and strong folks who seem to train all day, every day. They’re not fit because they train that way. They train that way because they’re fit enough to do it.

Excessive Calorie Restriction “Eat less, move more” is the popular, inevitable refrain from fitness “experts” giving weight loss advice. They claim that reducing your calorie intake and increasing your activity will always lead to simple, easy, inevitable fat loss. And yeah, that’s one way to lose body weight, but there’s one big problem with this equation: you need calories to recover from your workouts. Not a problem if you just want to lose body mass at any cost. Disastrous, though, if you want to improve performance, get stronger, and get fitter, because you need those calories to refuel your muscles and restock your energy reserves.

Plus, inadequate calorie intake coupled with intense exercise sends a “starvation” signal to the body, causing a slowing down of hormones. Instead of growing

lean mass and burning body fat, starvation (whether real or simulated) promotes muscle atrophy and body fat retention.

Either alone can be somewhat effective, but combining the two will only impair recovery. Note though this isn’t a free pass for junk food!

Inadequate Protein Your muscles move you, which is why no matter what type of training you do – endurance, strength, Pilates etc.– your muscles need to recover. Some workouts require less muscle recovery, sure, but every form of physical movement uses skeletal muscle. Muscle needs protein to repair itself and recover from exercise, this is perhaps the most fundamental concept in exercise recovery.

How much protein do you need to recover from a workout, exactly? As I said earlier, it depends on what kind of workout you’re trying to recover

Lack of Sleep Ive written a few articles on sleep as I think it is so important. The gist of it was that sleep loss doesn’t always impair performance, but it does impair recovery from exercise. Sleep debt impairs exercise recovery primarily via two routes: by increasing cortisol, reducing testosterone production, and lowering muscle protein synthesis; and by disrupting slow wave sleep, the constructive stage of slumber where growth hormone secretion peaks, tissues heal and muscles rebuild.

Additionally, sleep loss can increase the risk of injuries by decreasing balance and postural control. If you trip and fall, or throw out your back due to poor technique, you won’t even have a workout to recover from.

Nutrient Deficiencies Active people are “living more,” which puts greater demands on the body and increases the amount of “stuff” it must do to maintain health and basic function. Since every physiological function requires a micronutrient substrate – vitamin, mineral, hormone,

neurotransmitter, etc. – and physiological functions increase with exercise and recovery, active people require more micronutrients in their diet.

“More of everything” is a safe bet, but there are a couple key nutrients that working out especially depletes: Zinc and magnesium.

Infrequent Workouts You know this person: the weekend warrior. Every other weekend or so, he gets amped up and goes on a big bike ride, does a 10k, swims a few thousand meters, attempts to deadlift twice his body weight, tries to climb the local mountain, or performs some other impressive feat of human endurance/strength/ pain tolerance that he hasn’t done for months. He feels great doing it and feels incredibly accomplished, but by the time Monday rolls around he’s wracked with crippling DOMS that prevents him from performing simple physical tasks like shoe-lacing and backscratching, let alone going to the gym for an actual followup workout. Since he can’t work out – or even lift his arms over his head – it’ll be another couple weeks until he exercises again.

By then, any progress he made has already disappeared. He’s back at square one. Consistent workouts that gradually increase your intensity are what is required.u

BOOK LAUNCH The launching of the Book “In Slips” took place on Saturday evening last at function in the Community Hall. The Book which was produced to mark 100 years of Freshford Coursing Club was due to be launched last autumn but had to be postponed due to the pandemic. The book was compiled

by Ned Kennedy, John Meagher and Ned Cuggy. DERBY TRIAL WINNER Congratulations to Brian and Imelda Kelly Ballylarkin whose greyhound “Keep moving” won the Derby trial stake at Cashel recently and so qualified for the Derby trial stake at the National meeting in Clonmel in February next. The dog is owned by Imelda and trainer by her husband Brian.

GAA NEWS St.Lachtains Intermediate hurlers played in the championship quarter final at Nowlan Park on Sunday last where they faced Carrick shock. A tough game throughout the teams were even enough up to the half time break. In the second half Carrick shock took over somewhat and they a seven point lead. However after the water break the local lads upped their game and with goal from Shane Donnelly and points by Liam Hickey and James Maher they came out winners with three points to spare They now go through to the semi final where they take on The Fenians with a time date and venue to be confirmed. Please keep an eye out on social media for updates.

On Saturday afternoon last the Senior Hurling Relegation semi final was played at Pairc Lachtain with a big crowd in attendance which saw Graigue Ballycallan come out winners by four points over Erins Own of Castlecomer after a very even and hard fought game.

NEW BABIES Congratulations to Denis and Catriona Long, Garnamanagh on the birth of their baby boy last week. The couple already have two daughters.

Also congratulations to Michelle Bowden and her partner Mark on the birth of their baby girl recently.

DAY CENTRE Freshford Day care centre reopens on this Wednesday 20th October at 2pm in the GAA Club rooms. The Centre has been closed since the start of the pandemic. It is hoped to see all the former members back and new members are also very welcome both male and female. You can expect a cup of tea and a chat and some bingo. The Day Centre was greatly missed by the people during the pandemic and so it is great to see it back open.

ON HOLIDAY Enjoying their long awaited visit to Freshford at the moment at their home at Buncrussia Street from Norway are Bjorg and Andrea Dunne and her boyfriend Bent Ove. The family are regular visitors home to Freshford but due to the pandemic they haven’t been back since Christmas 2019.

SOCCER Freshford Town had two teams in action in the schoolboys section at the weekend. The U15 boys were in action on Saturday and were unlucky to lose out on a 3-2 score line.

The U10 boys had their first game of the league and gave a very good account of themselves under the management of Derek Walsh and William Looby U8s The training sessions for U8s will resume on Saturday next at the Sportsfield at Woodview from 12noon to 1pm with Gary in charge as usual.

All boys from five to eight years old are welcome so go along and join up.

IONAD LACHTAIN This year’s harvest thanksgiving took place recently at St.Lachtains Church, with good crowd. Minister Malcom Noonan TD gave a short address and acknowledgement of a recent bequest from the Acorn Clun and the late Gerry O’Reilly.

St.Lachtains Church Museum and Arts Centre reopened recently and will be open each Saturday and Sunday from 11.30a.m to 4.30p.m on Saturdays and from 12.30p.m to 4.30pm on Sundays. New display cabinets have been installed and filled with a host of interesting artefacts and some beautiful craftwork is also on sale. So why not drop in and see for yourself TIDY TOWNS Freshford tidy towns committee expressed thanks recently to all their loyal volunteers who helped out over the past weeks on Church Street clearing weeds along the pavement on each side . The seat opposite the local butchers was painted in vibrant red. Almost all the street furniture throughout the village have now been painted in their trademark vibrant red since the group returned after the pandemic. If you spot a seat that

ANAM CARA Supporting Parents After Bereavement: is hosting an event on Thursday 21st October at 7pm. Their guest speaker for the evening is Brid Carroll.

Brid, is a qualified Psychotherapist and Counselling Supervisor who has worked with a special interest in loss and bereavement issues for over twenty years. She holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Childhood Bereavement with St. Christopher’s Hospice, London and a Higher Diploma in Bereavement Studies from the Royal College of Surgeons and NUI Ireland. Brid has worked with the Irish Hospice Foundation and the HSE as Bereavement Liaison Officer in the HSE South region. Brid is presently counselling children, young people and families dealing with loss and change through death separation and illness. Brid will open the evening with a short talk on parental grief. She will cover the different circumstances of death, whether expected or sudden.

She will also talk about the impact a death of a son or daughter has on grieving parents and surviving siblings, along with the complex issues grieving parents must face, highlighting what is normal in the process. After Brid’s talk, there will be an opportunity for parents to talk to our Anam Cara Facilitators and volunteer parents.This would be an appropriate event for any bereaved parents you are in contact with. King Henry goes west!

Shefflin named Galway’s Top Cat

AFTER weeks of speculation surrounding the vacant Galway managers job, the announcement was made late Wednesday evening that hurling’s most decorated player, Henry Shefflin had been appointed to the role.

The legendary figure had been mooted as one of the possible candidates for the position, but many had expected Clare native Davy Fitzgerald to succeed Shane O’Neill as the tribesmen’s boss. Fellow Kilkenny man Richie O’Neill will join his coaching team.

Judging by the reaction on social media, many westerners are both relieved and excited that it’s The Ballyhale man and not the larger-than-life Davy Fitzgerald.

The statement issued to media by the Galway County Board on Wednesday evening read: “Galway GAA is delighted to announce Henry Shefflin as the new Galway Senior Hurling Manager. Henry’s achievements as a player are unrivalled. As a manager he has guided Ballyhale Shamrocks to All Ireland Club titles in 2019 and 2020.

Henry will be joined by fellow Kilkenny man Richie O’Neill as a coach and his management team will be finalised in the coming weeks. All in Galway GAA wish them the very best in their new roles”.

“Galway GAA also wish to thank everyone that participated in, and facilitated the selection process, including the candidates that put themselves forward as well as the interview panel for their diligence, commitment, and professionalism over the past few weeks”.

“The appointment of Henry Shefflin to lead our flagship team underpins both our immediate ambition for Galway hurling as well as a commitment to building a sustainable development pathway for our young hurlers. This will be followed by the appointment of our U-20 and Minor Management teams, as well as the Head of our newly constituted Adult Development Squad for 2022”.

Henry stated, ‘Managing the Galway Senior Hurlers presents a unique opportunity, and we relish the exciting challenge ahead as we begin this journey. We look forward to working with the players, the county board, and the wider Galway GAA community over the coming years’ To some pundits and fans, it will be a somewhat surprise appointment, given the fact that the legendary forward’s only management experience has been at club level to date. That started with a 2-year spell in charge of his native Ballyhale Shamrocks, and more recently as manager of intermediate side Thomastown.

It’s clear that Shefflin’s exploits with Ballyhale have not gone unnoticed, as Wednesday’s announcement suggests. When his two-year term was up with Shamrocks, ‘King Henry’ made it known that he wouldn’t manage against his native club.

Viewed by many as one of the greatest hurlers of all time, Shefflin enjoyed unparalleled success with Kilkenny spanning a 16-year period. During those golden days with the county, he won TEN All-Ireland’s, three hurler of the year awards and ELEVEN All-Stars.

Equally at club level, Henry was part of a silver-winning Ballyhale machine, as both player and then more recently as manager. The classy forward won three AllIreland club titles on the field and backed that up with two further titles as manager.

Shefflin’s appointment will be a huge boost to Galway hurling, given how their fortunes have declined since they lifted the Liam McCarthy cup back in 2017. Since that title win, the Tribesmen have failed to win a Leinster title, or reach an AllIreland decider.

Under Shefflin’s predecessor, Galway were beaten by Waterford in the qualifier’s, a defeat that signaled the end of the great Joe Canning’s intercounty career.

Ironically, it would be Canning that would take

over as the leading scorer in championship hurling, from Henry, just this year.

There’s no doubt about the size of task that lies ahead in the west for Shefflin.

This Galway panel are not getting any younger and the retirement of Canning is a huge loss. This might be one of the reasons for this appointment. Galway have been highly successful at minor level in recent years, and you would expect Shefflin will be blooding many of these players in the months ahead. Could Joe Canning possibly be tempted to return, given the stature of the new man at the top?

There’s work to be done out west, but by the time Kilkenny visit Pearse Stadium for a Leinster Championship clash next summer, Henry might just have team up for the challenge.

The appointment of Henry Shefflin as Galway boss, could prove to be a fantastic move.

Firstly, fantastic for Galway – they are getting one of the game’s greatest exponents who is a born winner, both as a player and in more recent years as a manager.

It is clear that Shefflin is a student of the game. He was classy as a player and has proved to be astute on the sideline.

Let’s not forget that when appointed manager of his beloved Ballyhale, Henry oversaw a 17game unbeaten championship run which culminated in two AllIreland titles.

Secondly, fantastic for Kilkenny – one of their ‘sons’ is going to gain invaluable inter-county management experience at the highest level. This will provide Henry with the perfect audition for an even bigger job down the line.

Perhaps one much closer to home.

Kilkenny is home, and I’m sure we will welcome ‘King Henry’ back some day to take charge of a county team using the home changing room at UPMC Nowlan Park.

Good Luck Henry. We’ll meet again.

St Canice’s Credit Union Kilkenny SHC semi-final draw: Ballyhale Shamrocks v James Stephens Tullaroan v O’Loughlin Gaels So far, the club championship has delivered some quality contests. This weekend’s offering’s promises to serve up more hurling of the highest order.

Ballyhale Shamrocks v James Stephens 3:30pm Throw in @ UPMC Nowlan Park Indifferent in the league this season, it’s no surprise to anyone that over the course of their two championship games to date, Ballyhale have improved with each performance.

There is obviously a certain expectation that comes with wearing the Shamrocks jersey. The fact that James O’Connor’s charges are going for four county titles in a row brings additional pressure to those who take to the field in each game.

In the first championship outing, they faced off against Graigue Ballycallan and conceded 2-20. There’s no doubt that the defence has analyzed that display and stepped up the intensity, as their quarter-final showing against league winners Bennettsbridge proved. Ballyhale were certainly more miserly at the back, and restricted their opponents to just five scores in the second half, and only one from play.

While the ‘usual suspects’ have been motoring along nicely for the current All-Ireland club champions, there has been much praise for one of the newer recruits, Joe Cuddihy. In the first round at John Locke Park, Cuddihy finished with an impressive tally of 1-5 and was most people’s man-of-the-match. Against the Bridge he capped another fine performance and hot 0-4 in the process.

2020 young hurler of the year, Eoin Cody has continued his inter-county form with the club. The nippy forward has notched 0-10 in the championship to date, and has been involved in everything good about the Shamrocks attacking play this season. Another forward contributing the same scoring return is the evergreen Colin Fennelly. His two-goal salvo against Graigue was to prove crucial in getting the lackluster Shamrocks over the line that day.

In all games, the accuracy from placed balls is vital in securing victory, and in TJ Reid, Ballyhale shouldn’t be found wanting in this area.

In midfield, Ronan Corcoran has also been hugely impressive.

As well as helping his side come out on top in the middle sector, he also managed to hit 0-3 last time out. Corcoran will be hoping to dominate the middle third and ensure a good supply of ball for his talented and accurate front six.

Evan Shefflin will look to keep things tight at the back and will need his fellow defenders bring the intensity form the last round into this weekend’s semi-final. The Ballyhale rearguard will certainly be expecting a busy afternoon, as their opponents, James Stephens have quality in the attacking zone.

Eoin Guilfoyle has been impressive all season, and will need to take advantage of any indiscipline from Shamrocks via the placed ball. He has great support from Cian Kenny, who hit 0-6 last time out against city rivals Dicksboro. The Village have their own version of Ronan Corcoran in Luke Scanlon. The towering midfielder will bring the battle to Ballyhale and as he’s shown in games this season, he can hit a score or two as well.

Goal-scoring quarter-final hero, Shane Donohue, may not find the opportunity to run the length of the park to raise a green flag this time. One would expect the Shamrocks forwards will keep the Village defence sufficiently busy this weekend.

The expected battle between Niall Brassill and Tj Reid could prove to be an exciting and interesting contest. The James Stephens centre-back will be keen to restrict the influence of his opponent and knows that any slip will be punished by the legendary forward. Niall can also hit a long-range score, so TJ will have to stick tight to his marker throughout.

The Village may look to find starting berths for both Eoin Larkin and team captain Conor Browne, both of whom were extremely influential when they entered the fray in the narrow victory of the Boro.

This encounter, a repeat of the 2019 final could be a feisty affair and both sides will know that maintaining the full quota of players on the pitch will be key to getting over the line. James Stephens haven’t won a county title in ten years; you’d be a brave man to back them de-throning Ballyhale this weekend.

VERDICT – Ballyhale to prevail

As we’ve said before, the bookies are seldom wrong. as we go to print, Ballyhale are expected to complete their quest for 4-in-a-row county titles. The betting experts believe that O’Loughlin Gaels are best placed to take the crown should the Shamrocks falter.

‘Tullawalsh’ as I like to call them are the rank outsiders to take the county honours.

But with Padraig, Tommy & Co on board, the Sash will go down fighting.

Should this semi-final turn into a toe-to-toe battle, the Sash will not be found wanting.

The Walsh – backed team have shown this season that they are not afraid to roll the sleeves up and get stuck in. In their two championship games to date, Tullaroan have shipped four six goals, and they will no doubt want to tighten things up at the back against the Gaels this Sunday.

The performances of county star and number 6, Padraig Walsh will be key in helping to decide this game. Padraig has been excellent this season all over the pitch. He has also weighed in with 0-8 in this year’s championship to date, seven of which came in his sides extra-time victory over league finalists Clara. If the Sash can get Padraig on the ball, he will dictate proceedings with his customary style and class. I would imagine that O’Loughlin Gaels will have a plan for the classy PW. Could this be one Mr. Paddy Deegan? The renowned inter-county man-marker has been deployed in the forward line during this season’s club matches. This could prove a master-stroke in curbing the influence of PW. While Tommy stole many of the headlines following his goal against Clara, it has been Shane Walsh that has been responsible for keeping the scoreboard ticking over. Against Erins Own he finished with a tally of 0-9 and then went three better in the quarter-final win over Clara, registering 0-12. Shane has been deadly from frees and will look to continue his streak on Sunday.

While the bookies rank the Sash as the least likely team to win the county title, they possess some fine hurlers, Walsh’s aside.

In Mossy Keoghan, they have a hurler that Brian Cody hasn’t been shy of putting his faith in. Keoghan will run all day and will chip in with a score or two. Dylan Simpson is another that will trouble the score board and bring great vigor to the game. John Walton and Thomas Dunne will leave all on the turf and all will be driven on by Martin Walsh.

Sunday’s opponents, O’Loughlin Gaels are seen by the punters as the most likely challengers to the immovable force that is Ballyhale. Andy Comerford’s side have been motoring along nicely this season, very much below radar. They began their championship campaign with a 13-point win over a disappointing Rower-Inistioge team. The afore mentioned Paddy Deegan hit five lovely points that day and was the talk of the town. Not to be outdone be his club mate, Eoin Wall hit 2-2 and has also been lively and accurate in attack this season. The Sash defence will need to have their wits about them as Wall certainly Know’s where the net is! Mark Bergin will be keen to match anything that his opposite number Shane Walsh can do on Sunday. Tullaroan will also need to keep tabs on Eoin O’Shea and Conor Kelly too. In Defence, Huw Lawlor will be ready to deal with whatever he is faced with and will rise to the challenge.

O’Loughlin’s quarter-final match with beaten shield finalists Mullinavat was a much closer affair with the city side 6 points ahead at the long whistle. Again, new-found attacking sensation Paddy Deegan hit 1-1, while his partner in crime Mark Bergin hit 1-10. They lead for all that game, and when Mullinavat started to close the gap, Deegan dropped into the middle third to nullify the threat.

Should this game go the distance, and beyond into extra-time, Tullaroan will fancy their chances of prevailing in their role as the underdog.

VERDICT – Too close to call, The Bookies say O’Loughlin’s ...but it might be The Sash!

UPMC Nowlan Park will be buzzing on Sunday. The final four in this year’s St Canice’s Credit Union Kilkenny senior club championship will take to the hallowed turf at the home of hurling.

We have been treated to some great matched this season so far, and one feels that Sunday’ servings might just improve on that!

O’Loughlin Gaels vs Tullaroan, now that’s a tasty clash. These two sides will start the ball rolling on Sunday. The match-up will again prove crucial. Will Paddy Deegan pick up inter - county team mate, Padraig Walsh? Whichever of these two talented and classy hurlers has the better game, could well swing it in their team’s favour.

The dead ball will as usual, be a primary source of scores for both teams. Shane Walsh vs Mark Bergin. Now that has a quality ring to it.

The Sash with their 20 titles in the cabinet would love to get back on the club throne, their last title was way back in 1994 - Ray Houghton vs Italy – remember that goal?

The supporters will no doubt make themselves heard on Sunday and this will make for a fantastic atmosphere.

Following the Sash and Gaels clash, comes James Stephens and Ballyhale.

The city side will be pumped up for this semi-final clash. They know that the task ahead won’t be easy – but they will lay it all on the line at 3:30pm on Sunday.

Scanlon, Brassill, Eoin Larkin, Conor Browne – these boys will empty the tank. In Guilfoyle they have a reliable free taker with a little more to his game also. Cian Kenny will keep Holden & Shefflin busy.

Joe Cuddihy, Eoin Cody, Colin Fennelly and TJ Reid – a tantalising mix of forward artistry.

The Shamrocks have been improving with each quarter of hurling. They showed this in their win over league holders Bennettebridge.

Their quest for 4-in-a-row county titles goes on – and I have a sneaky suspicion it will continue beyond Sunday.

Brian Dowling’s charges never put together the complete 60-minute performance, and eventually came up short against the rebels of Cork.

However, the team’s efforts have not gone unnoticed, as seven players have been nominated for the Camogie Assocation’s All-Stars.

All-Ireland Senior Champions Galway lead this year’s nominations, with 12 players selected on the list.

Despite tasting final heartbreak against Antrim at headquarters last month, Kilkenny intermediate Camogie team have seen their season’s efforts acknowledged by the Camogie Association.

No fewer than TEN members of John Scott’s team have been nominated for the Soaring Stars awards that take place at a gala banquet at the Osprey Hotel in Naas, Co. Kildare on Friday, November 26th, providing additional covid restrictions are not implemented.

Kilkenny’s conqueror’s Antrim also have ten players selected.

Beaten semifinalists Galway, have five players in the mix, while Meath see four ladies in the running.

Laois make up the intermediate nominees with one player recognised.

Wexford, Premier Junior winners this year, see three players selected, while their beaten opponents, Armagh also have three nominees.
