Fianna Fáil TD for Carlow/ Kilkenny Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere has said that fuel prices are heading towards unsustainable levels for the public, especially those in agriculture.

Deputy Cleere said: “As spokesperson for Rural Affairs and Agriculture, I understand the pressure people in rural Ireland feel towards the price of diesel and petrol. We need

our cars to get us to work, to bring our children to school, and for doing the everyday essentials.

“I particularly want to acknowledge the challenges farmers are facing with the cost of green diesel and petrol.”

Deputy Cleere said more needed be done for the agriculture sector.

He had raised these issues di-

rectly with the Taoiseach and would continue to engage with Minister O’Brien to ensure the Government delivered support for the sector.

His remarks came before the Dáil passed the Government’s second package of fuel reliefs amounting to a further €500m., which it said had the best consumer supports in Europe.

It came after a fractious three-hour confidence debate as the Coalition held firm against a threatened general election, despite losing Junior Minister Michael Healy-Rae and the vote of his brother, Danny Healy-Rae. The final margin was 14 votes, with the Government prevailing 92-78, showing it still has a comfortable majority.

Among the new measures being introduced are a reduction in the cost of autodiesel by 10c, bringing the total reduction of diesel to 32c, with petrol reduced by 10c, bringing its price down by 27c.

Separate supports passed for green and red diesel, special schemes for haulage and agriculture and a delay to the planned carbon tax increase

A new initiative helping communities celebrate sustainably has launched in Co. Kilkenny, introducing a simple but impactful idea: borrow your partyware instead of throwing it away.

The ‘Borrow, Use, Return’ pilot scheme provides reusable party packs through selected community groups, making it easy for residents to host birthdays, events and gatherings without relying on single-use plastics.

Developed by Environmental Awareness officers across the Southern Waste Region, including Kilkenny, the initiative is funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and supports the move towards a more circular, low-waste economy.

Start-up tech up for award

Route 4 bus on the road again Deputy Peter Chap Cleere has welcomed the National Transport Authority’s recommendation to introduce a new Public Service Obligation (PSO) on Route 4 bus, describing it as a “transformational step forward” for rural communities across Ireland.

Deputy Cleere said the decision represented a clear recognition of the unique challenges faced by people living

outside major urban centres and marked a significant investment in connectivity, accessibility, and regional development.

“This is a hugely positive and long-overdue development for rural Ireland,” Deputy Cleere said. “Reliable and accessible public transport is not a luxury - it is a necessity.

Deputy Cleere also took the opportunity to thank the public for their engagement throughout the consultation process, noting that community voices played a vital role in shaping the outcome.

He concluded by calling for swift implementation of the PSO to ensure that commu-

nities could begin to feel the benefits without delay.

“Now is the time to move from recommendation to delivery. Rural Ireland has waited long enough, and I will continue to work to ensure this is implemented as quickly and effectively as possible.”

Rothe House: to the manor borne An exhibition, ‘Rothe House 19662026: The Restoration’, charts the story of how Ireland’s only 16th century merchant mansion was saved, becoming Kilkenny’s first dedicated visitor attraction.

In the early 1960s, a group of visionary members of the Kilkenny Archaeological Society set out to buy what was fast becoming a ruin in the heart of their city. Led by Chairperson (and later Freeman of Kilkenny) Margaret Phelan, they launched a major fundraising campaign. Their aim was not only to buy but to restore this ancient house to its former glory.

This was a time when restoration was neither fashionable nor encouraged. However, with the support of the Irish Tourism Board, Bord Fáilte, they persevered. The Office of Public Works agreed to carry out the restoration work, with the Archaeological Society paying for it.

The society’s fundraising campaign was not only a local one, but a national and international effort.

Letters were sent far and wide, with people like the Princess of Monaco, and the Duchess of Westminster (owner of Cheltenham legend Arkle), among those to send money towards the Rothe House fund.

The first of the three buildings at Rothe House opened on April 17, 1966.

Now, 60 years later, this free exhibition will take visitors through that story. It will detail the 20th Century history of the house, the efforts involved to purchase it, and

the landmark (and trendsetting) restoration project that ensued.

The team of craftsmen assembled for Rothe House had never worked on a restoration project before.

However, they subsequently worked at some of the most important historic sites in the region, including Jerpoint Abbey, the Rock of Cashel, Cahir Castle, and Tintern

Abbey in Saltmills, Co. Wexford.

The restoration of Rothe House & Garden stands as a testament to unwavering dedication and meticulous preservation.

Each stone, each bloom, carries the weight of centuries past, carefully tended to breathe new life into this cherished relic of Ireland’s heritage. Among the tranquil gardens, vibrant with life, echoes of history resound through the meticulously restored halls.

This endeavour embodies the enduring allure of restoration, transforming Rothe House into a beacon of authenticity amidst the chaos of modernity. It invites visitors to wander its historic corridors, to immerse themselves in the magic of a by gone er The six-month exhibition will open to the public from Saturday, April 18.

Admission will be free on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 from 10am to 5pm.

A programme of events to celebrate 60 years since the opening of the house will run throughout the summer.

€100m. farmer scheme ‘was before fuel protests’ Agriculture Minister Martin Heydon has insisted the €100m scheme for farmers and contractors, which was announced last weekend, was not a reaction to blockades.

Mr Heydon told the Farming Independent that he was progressing these plans in government buildings a week before protests began.

However, he admitted the recent fuel protests “pushed on” the final proposal to Cabinet, but maintains it is a long-term “body of work”.

He also acknowledged that the earlier 5c/L cut in excise duty, which was announced in March, was clearly “not enough” for the sector.

The minister revealed the country faced a point where

“milk would have to be spilt” because co-ops could not get fuel for collection lorries and the blockades at ports trapped essential bluetongue vaccines and molasses needed to prevent cows from dying of grass tetany.

However, he said he has no plans to engage directly with protest organisers, referring to them as “so-called leaders”.

According to Mr Heydon, the organisers were “articulating a viewpoint and a concern, but on the other hand, they don’t have an ability to direct the mass movement of people”.

He said he would only deal with “democratically elected representative bodies” like the IFA and FCI. “I have heard people who

very much support the protests and blockades deliberately misinform people... refuse to reference the €100m package and try and deliberately mislead people to think this is only a 2.5c/L change on green diesel.”

The package delivers a 20c/L subsidy on top of a 7.5c/L total excise reduction, worth a combined 27.5c/L

backdated to March 1. Unlike previous flat-rate schemes, this is based on verified 2025 usage, ensuring the heaviest fuel users (contractors and tillage farmers) get the most aid.

The scheme covers five months from March to the end of July to hit the busiest window for silage and harvest.

New baby jabs: wider reform needed. says MEP Kelleher While the addition of two more diseases to the Heel Prick test for newborn babies is very welcome, a general reform of neonatal screening for rare diseases in Ireland and across the European Union is desperately needed, according to Fianna Fáil MEP, Billy Kelleher.

All newborns will be screened for two devastating genetic conditions from today, allowing for vital early treatment.

The heel prick test will now be accompanied by testing for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a rare muscle-wasting condition that can potentially lead to a child’s death by the age of two.

Also added is screening for severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), a rare and life-threatening condition that results in a baby having low T cells, (a type of blood cell that fights infection), a weakened immune system and vulnerability to infection.

In both cases, early diagnosis and treatments lead to better outcomes for the children.

Kelleher, the lead negotiator for the Renew Europe Group on the European Parliament’s Own Legislative Initiative on the Rare Diseases Action Plan said: “This is, of course, great news and sees Ireland increasing the number of diseases being tested for from nine to 11.

“However, we need to be honest with ourselves – we are laggards compared to other EU Member States.

Italy for example tests for over 50 diseases and syndromes, “In my work on the Rare Diseases Action Plan, I have tabled amendments designed to set gold-standard, pan-European requirements on the number of dis-

eases and syndromes tested for at birth,” the MEP said.

“I have also tabled an amendment linking European Medicines Authority (EMA) authorisation for a treatment for a rare disease to a requirement for Member States to start testing for it as part of the heel prick test.

“A new drug that has been approved should automatically be added to the list of rare diseases that Ireland tests for. It’s a no brainer to me.”

Furthermore, he said, we needed to be progressive and ambitious with newgenomic screening for all newborns.

“When a child gets sick with an unknown, likely rare disease, it can be a devastating diagnosis. However, if more diseases are tested for earlier, parents have a chance to understand the situation as a family, and start treatment if available, possibly limiting the impact on a child’s health, wellbeing and long-term prognosis.

“Higher rates of newborn screening and new-genomic screening will also allow us to develop a population profile for the entire EU ensuring medical services are geared towards the future needs of citizens and crucially it will give confidence to pharmaceutical companies to invest in R&D into new treatments for rare diseases,” Kelleher said.

“Ireland should be a global leader. However, that requires us to be ambitious with newborn screening. I believe Ireland’s EU Presidency later this year is an ideal time to show that ambitious and to lead the EU into a better time for children and adults living with rare diseases.”

This award reflects a hugely successful year

for the society and the continuous efforts of its committee. Led by Chairpersons Charlie Dunican and Emma Sheehan, Secretaries Peter Reid and Elizabeth O’Connor, and Treasurers Simon Jennings and Edward Daly, the society raised an impressive €25,000,00 for their chosen charities: Kerry Mental Health Association, Kerry Hospice Foundation, and Recovery Haven Kerry.

In their acceptance speech, the committee highlighted the importance of supporting local charities that provide vital services to communities.

Co-Chairperson Emma Sheehan commented: “Everyone unfortunately knows someone who has

been affected by the issues that these charities raise funds and awareness for.

Because of that, it is so important to us as a committee to support these organisations in continuing their incredible work.”

Speaking on the successful year for the Society, Co-Chairperson Charlie Dunican said: “Looking back on the year, it’s been unbelievable. The level of engagement, growth in membership, and the support for our events and charities from both students and the wider Tralee community has gone beyond anything we expected.

“As a final year committee, having the opportunity to give back to the univer-

sity, support upcoming students, and contribute to the wider community is something we’re very grateful for. We’re immensely proud of what’s been achieved this year and hope to see the society continue to grow and succeed long into the future.”

Laura Woods, Societies Officer at MTU Kerry and Chairperson of BICS, praised the group’s achievement: “Winning a national award is an outstanding accomplishment.

The committee is a group of eight dedicated, hardworking, talented individuals; it has been a privilege to work with them. They are fantastic ambassadors for MTU Kerry, and we are very proud of them.”

Call for free public transport across Ireland Ireland South MEP Michael McNamara has called for the Government to introduce free public transport across Ireland, following the IMF’s warning that “all roads lead to higher prices and slower growth worldwide” should the conflict in the Middle East continue.

“The Government’s call on

households to cut fuel use is meaningless unless it concentrates on encouraging the public to use alternatives,” McNamara said. “Public transport needs to be made free for users for the next six months. This would cost up to €275 million, based on a 2023 report commissioned by the National Transport Authority

(NTA) from Ernst and Young,” he said.

It must be acknowledged that this was a significant sum of money, he said, but it was less than the amount the Government was expecting to spend on the upcoming sixmonth EU Presidency and was small compared to the billions of euro “thrown around by

the Government” during the Covid era.

“Making buses, trams and trains free is a relatively easy measure for the Government to implement and one that will make a difference to ordinary people, as it will result in a new focus on public transport alternatives,” Michael McNamara said.

Please, no more deaths by the Grace of law Questions about the dangerous use of scrambler bikes have been asked in the Dáil since 2005. In 2010, then Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern said that Section 41 of the Road Traffic Act 1994 allowed Gardaí to seize scrambler bikes in breach of road traffic legislation.

Scrambler bikes and their illegal use have been causing problems in communities for years. Too many public spaces are ridden with riders tearing around estates. They need to be taken off the pavements and the parks and the football pitches and wherever they are used, to not just annoy but to endanger those who have had to live with the inevitable outcome of years of lax policing and indifference to the safety of others.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) last month published a detailed analysis of fatalities and serious injuries arising from crashes involving scram-

blers on public roads between 2021 and 2025. The findings highlight a clear and concerning road safety issue associated with scrambler use.

Key Findings show that three fatalities and 54 serious injuries occurred involving at least one scrambler bike.

Of these, 42 were scrambler users (two fatalities and 40 serious injuries). All 42 bikers were male and 31 were aged 25 or younger. Twenty-five of the 42 scrambler users were involved in weekend collisions. Of the 15 other road users injured in crashes with scramblers, nine were pedestrians, two were cyclists, two were drivers and two were passengers.

The data suggests that young males are more likely to be involved in scrambler-related crashes, while pedestrians are the largest group of nonscrambler users seriously injured in such incidents.

RSA Director Michael

Rowland says: “This analysis demonstrates a persistent and serious safety risk associated with the use of scramblers on public roads. The profile is clear — young men are most at risk.”

Last weekend’s measures under ‘Grace’s Law’ came into effect, banning scramblers in all public places. It will also, hopefully, strengthen Garda enforcement.

The 18-year-old man behind the horrific death of Grace Lynch, who was just 16, has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and is expected back before the courts in May. I say man, because that’s what he legally is – old enough to vote, to go into a pub, to drive a car, to join the Army. Old enough to know better. Saying “sorry” in no way excuses Keith Lee’s reckless and deadly deed, despite the courts hearing of mental health issues.

The parents of Grace, who died in January after being hit

at a pedestrian crossing on the Ratoath Road, say there is no point having a law banning the bikes, if Gardaí are not allowed to chase the riders.

Her parents had called for a total ban on scramblers and urged the Government to take immediate action.

“A clear and concerning road safety issue ...

There have been laws in place, which were strengthened in recent years, to deal with the problem. Since July, 2023, scramblers have been illegal on public roads. It is also illegal to drive them dangerously on private land.

Gardaí have had powers to seize any scrambler being driven dangerously anywhere and can enter properties to take them. The bikes though, by their nature, when on public roads can be elusive.

It has taken the death of Grace Lynch to jolt the Government into a rapid response to a problem for which there has been plenty of legislation but seemingly little real action to stamp out the dangerous use of these vehicles. Now, the Department of Transport says the new law will strengthen existing powers for Gardaí and bring “additional legal clarity”.

Grace’s parents Siobhán and Martin say there is no

point having a new law banning the bikes if Gardaí are not allowed to chase the culprits – citing a court ruling last week in which a Garda was banned from driving for two years for dangerous driving while in pursuit of two masked scrambler riders in 2024. Garda Sean Shields says he was doing his best to try to address the “scourge” of scrambler bikes and denied his driving had been dangerous.

Unless we follow the letter of ‘Grace’s Law’, our dangerous coddling of criminal behaviour will inevitably lead to more deaths.

Our laws need to be tougher and reflect the crime. The maximum sentence the man who killed Grace Lynch could serve, according to Irish law, is 10 years. If sentenced to such, he would likely be out in seven years. He’ll be 25. Grace was just 16, a girl with her whole life ahead of her.

Johnstown Eco-Hub gets the green light Johnstown is to receive €224,000 in LEADER funding towards the cost of a recreational, inter-generational eco-hub.

Subject to planning permission, the hub will be located at the existing sports complex.

The complex will be transformed into an inclusive

campus offering multi-use spaces to the entire community.

“This will be a place of social connection and recreation for the whole village,” says Mairead Rohan, LEADER programme manager in Co. Kilkenny.

“It will include a coffee

kiosk, a sheltered outdoor space for low-impact activities, a community gym and outdoor gathering spaces.

Those with special needs will be accommodated, as will older members of the community with mobility challenges.”

The project is being led by the Johnstown Town Team and is

the third phase of a strategic plan for the village. Around the hub, they will create biodiversity-rich landscaping, such as pollinator-friendly plants and native trees.

Smart Village features like smart lighting and digital notice boards will also be part of the development.

“This community is rising to the challenge of becoming a smart village, taking care of the physical and mental wellbeing of its members,” says Declan Rice, CEO of Kilkenny LEADER Partnership. “We’re delighted they have been approved for funding. It’s a credit to their efforts.”

After those storms, are the €340m. payments Aviva Insurance paid out €340 million in general insurance claims in 2025 – a 24% increase on the previous year, with property claims rising 65%.

The jump in property claims reflects the severity of Storm Éowyn, which caused widespread damage to homes and businesses across Ireland, as well as the settlement of Storm Darragh claims (from December 2024) during 2025. Aviva noted that, while weatherrelated events were a major factor, broader cost pressures also contributed across key claims categories.

Motor damage payments increased by 23% in 2025.

Combined with the 13% increase in 2024, this means repair and write off costs are now 39% higher than in 2023.

Rising costs for vehicle parts, labour, paint and onboard technology drive higher repair costs across the market. These pressures are compounded by delays, a shortage of skilled repairers, EV repair complexity and increased collision volumes.

Elevated volumes have persisted, and Aviva reports that motor claims notified in early 2026 remain high.

Spending on injury claims remains broadly in line with 2024.

However, litigation levels remain high, with just 50% of Injuries Resolution Board (IRB) assessments accepted in 2025. This means a significant proportion of claimants pursued their cases through the courts, resulting in longer settlement times and higher legal costs.

Aviva noted that, as shown in the National Claims Information Database (NCID), savings delivered under the

Personal Injuries Guidelines continue to be eroded by rising legal fees.

Commenting on the figures, Lisa Dennehy, Chief Claims Officer at Aviva, said: “These figures demonstrate our commitment to supporting customers when things go wrong. Our focus is on delivering a fair and timely resolution of claims. Our claims team is supported by a nationwide network of motor repairers and property loss adjusters who provide an excellent service to our customers."

Aviva said that insurance fraud continued to add unnecessary costs for honest policyholders and remains a key focus for the business.

The insurer is investing in specialist expertise, enhanced fraud detection technology, and closer collaboration with law enforcement. Aviva welcomed the proactive stance taken by the Courts and An Garda Síochána but highlighted continued challenges around industry wide information sharing.

Aviva continues to strongly advocate for a Central Insurance Industry Fraud Hub, modelled on the UK’s Insurance Fraud Bureau, to enable real time intelligence sharing between insurers and law enforcement under robust consumer data safeguards.

Aviva said it strongly supported Injuries Resolution Board (IRB) mediation and consents at higher rates than the wider market across employer liability, public liability and motor claims. The IRB reports a 55% mediation success rate, with most cases settling within around three months – compared with an average of 11 months through the assessment route.

Leeson for pastures new The Kilkenny winner of the Pasture Progress Awards 2025 was announced as Leeson Neale, when Chairman of Grass10 John Macnamara presented the Pasture Progress Awards recently at the Teagasc, Johnstown Castle, Co. Wexford.

The Pasture Progress Awards recognises progress in grazing management by farmers across the country.

These farmers are growing

and utilising more pasture on their farms, contributing to sustainable livestock production systems. This progress was assessed using PastureBase Ireland. The awards are supported by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with an overall prize fund of €40,000.

Gone fishing', as 72 rivers open for salmon A total of 72 rivers will be open for salmon angling in 2026, in line with scientific advice provided by the Technical Expert Group on Salmon (TEGOS), on the status of individual stocks.

The TEGOS Report for 2026 shows that wild Atlantic salmon stocks continue to experience a significant and sustained decline, with many

rivers below their conservation limits. The development of the regulations was also informed by two public consultations.

The new regulations include a range of conservation management measures including seasonal controls, catch limits, tagging requirements and a prohibition of harvesting salmon in rivers which do

not meet their necessary conservation limits.

These measures were designed to balance conservation with angling opportunities where possible, while protecting vulnerable fish populations, the Minister for Fisheries, Martin Haydon, said.

Ireland (IFI) asking them to review the existing approach to salmon management and to consider what options are available for the protection and recovery of stocks.

This work, backed by scientific advice, will inform future policy decisions in this area.

IFI are expected to report back to the minister by late summer.

Waxing lyrical with our local pond pollinators Little is known about how ponds benefit pollinators.

Walsh Scholar Clémentine Sitoleux is embarking on a four-year PhD, funded by Teagasc, to find out how farmland ponds benefit pollinators.

Pollinators (bees, hoverflies, and moths) provide

important services to agriculture, people, and the planet. However, many pollinator species are in decline. In Ireland, around one-third of native bee species are threatened with extinction.

Farmland ponds are valuable semi-natural habitats

that farmers create and maintain that benefit nature.

The Ponds for Pollinators Project aims to gather information about farmland ponds across the counties of Kilkenny, Carlow, Kildare, Wicklow, and Wexford.

The study will investigate

how pond characteristics —such as size, age, and surrounding vegetation —influence pollinator communities on farmland.

In addition, the project will examine what motivations lead farmers to create ponds and identify the barriers to creating ponds on farmland.

What we can do to offset the fuel crisis Maybe it’s time to look for a silver lining in the oil crisis caused by Trump’s war on Iran, current talks aside.

Could choking of supplies in the Straits of Hormuz be the kick in the pants we need to make us less dependent on fossil fuels and switch to renewable energy sources?

Given what Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), describes as “a major energy crisis and the largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market,” we seriously need to get on with it. Here 80% of our energy overall comes from fossil fuels and switching to an alternative could saves us an estimated €2.8bn according to the IEA. The Government could try short-term prompts to modify behaviour and cut back on demand, where road usage and transport account for 45% of oil demand. For instance, why

not try free public transport for a week to wean folk from their cars or a Go Nowhere Day to conserve fuel. It might be a veritable drop in the ocean and do just a little to reduce our obligation to cut carbon emissions by 42% by 2030, where currently that’s only likely to be 22%.

Many measures needed to provide options to fossil fuels are long term. For example, the national grid needs upgrading to take advantage of renewables like wind power. Also, there is the lack of a suitable port for vessels to construct and service offshore wind and wave power facilities. At present 40% comes from renewables, mainly wind, but the aim is to reach 80%.

Creating alternative sources of power like nuclear power (currently against the law) in the shape of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are long term and costly and the debate about this is just be-

ginning.

In areas where we have personal choice there is some progress. The sale of EVs is speeding up, with a 35% increase last year to 23,601 vehicles and last January the sale of electric cars outpaced traditional ones for the first time. The change is partly due to cheaper EVs coming on the market and to greater availability of public charging points.

Retrofitting homes, with improvements like solar panels and heat pumps, is going slowly, held back by a cumbersome grant system and lack of skilled trades. By 2024 only 11.5% of the target for 2030 had been met. Roof insulation is one of the most effective measures in reducing the need for heating oil.

One of the challenges is that costs have to be met by the homeowner before grants are paid and more incentives may be needed to speed up

the process.

Senator Patricia Stephenson has called on the HSE to urgently address significant consultant staffing shortfalls at St. Luke’s Hospital Kilkenny, warning that current levels fall well short of international best practice and risk undermining patient care across Carlow-Kilkenny New figures show that St. Luke’s Emergency Department recorded approximately 13,589 attendances for every Emergency Medical Consultant. International guidance recommends one Emergency Medicine consultant per 3,600 - 4,000 patients, demonstrating that current staffing levels fall well short of what is required to ensure safe and effective care.

“Emergency Departments are the frontline of our health service, and they must be properly resourced,” said Senator Stephenson. “The level of consultant staffing at St. Luke’s does not reflect the volume of patients being seen. This raises serious concerns about patient safety, staff burnout, and the overall sustainability of services.”

“Shockingly, St Luke’s ranks as the third lowest hospital in the country for the Emergency Consultant to patient ratio. Given the large catchment area of St Luke’s across the Southeast and Midlands this is very concerning.”

“I’ve written to the HSE to ask how they intend to bring

staffing at St. Luke’s in line with best practice. Patients and staff alike deserve confidence that the hospital is adequately resourced to meet demand.”

Senator Stephenson also highlighted that the issue extends beyond Emergency Medicine, noting broader consultant vacancies across the hospital: “St. Luke’s plays a critical role in serving communities across Carlow and Kilkenny and the wider region. However, gaps exist across multiple consultant specialties, including cardiology, dermatology, rheumatology, neurology, and respiratory medicine.

These shortages place additional pressure on already stretched staff and impact waiting times and patient outcomes.”

Senator Stephenson concluded by emphasising the need for urgent and coordinated action: “This is not simply a workforce issue - it is about ensuring safe, timely, and high-quality care for people across the region. The HSE must act decisively to address these shortages.”

By Senator Gerard Craughwell The evolution of public sector pensions since 1995 reflects a consistent policy direction shifting financial risk away from the State and onto individual public servants. While reforms were often justified on grounds of sustainability, the cumulative effect has been a significant erosion of pension security for newer entrants, widening inequities between generations of public servants.

Pre1995: Public Serviced Standard Pension Public servants recruited before April 1995 enjoyed highly favourable terms. A pension of 1/80th and a lump sum of 3/80ths with a maximum of 40 years yielding a lump sum equal to 150% of their final pensionable remuneration, and an annual occupational pension equal to 50% of final salary.

This model offered predictability, stability, and a clear link between final salary and retirement income.

Public Service pensions move from security to uncertainty

Post1995: Integration With State Pension The 1995 reform integrated the Contributory State Pension (CSP) into publicsector pensions, effectively reducing the occupational pension payable by the State.

The legislation wrongly assumed that all new entrants would qualify for the full CSP, but this assumption has proven problematic for workers with interrupted careers or part-time service.

Supplementary pensions were introduced to “make up the difference” only where strict conditions were met, including that the retiree “shall not be in paid employment”. This creates a perverse disincentive to work and leaves many with gaps in income before age 66. I believe that it is fair to say this schemes underlying problems have not yet been fully tested.

The 2013 Single Public Service Pension The introduction of the SPSPS in 2013 represents the most dramatic reduction in public service pension value. Instead of basing pensions on final salary, the SPSPS calculates benefits on a career average basis, uprated only by Consumer Price Index (CPI). Benefits are now based on a careeraverage pay, as opposed to salary in the final three years of work. Given that publicsector pay typically is based on incremental scales, that is it rises with seniority, this change alone significantly reduces pension outcomes.

The minimum pension age is now tied to the Contributory State Pension (CSP) age currently 66 and likely to rise in the coming years. This means workers must wait longer to access benefits, even as the nature of many public sector roles (eg., healthcare, education) becomes more

AND WHAT OF THE STATE PENSION? The Social Welfare and Pensions Act 2011 gradually increased the age when people received the State pension in Ireland. It already moved the age from 65 to 66. The next phase of moving to 67 was planned to take effect in in 2021 but the 2020 General Election happened. Those coming up to age 66 realised they were going to receive their pension a year later and it became a major political issue, so it remained at 66.

Instead, we have a voluntary option of deferring your pension from age 66 to anywhere up to age 70. In return, you get a higher payment if you defer. I do not know anyone who is eligible for full State pension at 66, who has deferred it. Why would you? What is the benefit of a higher payment in the future when you don’t know how long you are going to get it paid for? And you continue to pay PRSI on any other income until you start receiving the State pension. If you are still working past 66, you are paying more tax by deferring the State pension. It is beneficial for people who don’t have enough PRSI contributions, so they can build up their record to get the State pension.

Our population is growing and people are living longer, so that means the cost of the State pension is only getting bigger and bigger.

Unlike post1995 entrants, SPSPS members have no access to supplementary pensions when retiring under the CSP age currently 66.

The terms make no provision for supplementary pensions for any new entrants.

This leaves a stark income gap for those front-line uniformed services obliged to

retire earlier than the CSP age.

Uniformed personnel (Gardaí, Defence Forces, firefighters, prison officers) face unique challenges.They must retire early, often as young as 50 or 55, yet the SPSPS does not provide a supplementary pension for them. This means many will have their occupational pension on retirement but will not have

their fully integrated pension income until the retirement age of 66.

Indeed, the SPSPS expects fast accrual frontline uniformed workers to find alternative employment following their retirement, contradicting the physical realities of their professions.

Even the increases in mandatory retirement age to 62 does not resolve the gap, as fast accrual benefits cease at 60 and revert to standard accrual thereafter.

If an individual remains in employment beyond 60, their pension accrual reverts

to a standard basis. This effectively penalises those who continue working.

Intergenerational Inequity The actuarial review underpinning the SPSPS reduces the State’s liabilities by approximately 25%. In other words, newer entrants are subsidising the sustainability of the system through significantly reduced benefits.

The Irish Times puts it bluntly: “Pre-2013 public servants have the golden ticket while younger employees pay the price of reforms.”

This inequity undermines

morale, recruitment, and retention especially in critical services within the country.

(ASC): A Permanent Levy The ASC replaced the temporary Pension Related Deduction but remains a permanent charge it “seeks to obtain additional permanent employee contributions”. This means public servants now pay more for pensions that are objectively less valuable.

System Increasingly Reliant On Individual Top-Ups Workers are encouraged to “boost” their pensions through AVCs or purchasing notional service. This shifts responsibility from the State to the employee and disproportionately disadvantages lower paid workers who cannot afford such contributions.

In conclusion, the post 2013 SPSPS is less generous, less fair, and less coherent for all public servants but hits uniformed services hardest.

Across three decades, we’ve: • Reduced pension generosity • Increased employee contributions • Raised retirement ages • Eliminated supplementary supports • Created deep inequities between generations • Left uniformed services particularly exposed While sustainability is a legitimate concern, the burden has fallen overwhelmingly on newer entrants, creating a two-tier system that is difficult to justify on grounds of fairness or workforce planning.

The Environment Department of Kilkenny County Council is continuing their Anti-Dumping and Anti-Fly-Tipping Campaign, by calling on all citizens to recognise both their legal obligations and personal responsibility when it comes to the proper disposal of waste.

Illegal dumping and flytipping continue to have a serious impact on Kilkenny’s environment, communities and local economy. This campaign aims to highlight that waste disposal is not just a service issue, but a shared civic duty.

Why a lasting answer needs more than subsidies Last week we all woke up to near-empty petrol pumps and businesses on the brink. What began as scattered complaints on social media after the Easter bank holiday exploded into a full-blown national crisis. Fuel depots were blockaded, along with the country’s only oil refinery at Whitegate in Cork. For days, spreading roadblocks and shortages brought the country to a halt.

Hospitals cut non-emergency services, fire crews warned of delays and ordinary motorists queued for hours or simply stayed home. The pain was felt in every corner of the island.

The Gardaí found themselves in an impossible situation.

Fair enough, peaceful protest is one thing, but trying to hold the whole country’s fuel supply to ransom is another matter. On the fifth day, after repeated warnings under the ‘4Es’ approach – engage, explain, encourage and enforce – Gardaí moved in at Whitegate.

the blockade. Arrests were made, and pepper spray was used in one tense moment.

Defence Forces heavy-lift vehicles stood ready but were barely needed. Commissioner Justin Kelly was blunt: “Blocking critical infrastructure isn’t protest, it’s illegal and endangers us all.” Within hours, the O’Connell Street sit-in in Dublin and the Limerick and Galway depots stood down.

The crisis that brought the country to its knees lifted

almost as quickly as it arrived.

Yet, the political fallout has only just begun. On Sunday evening, Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Tánaiste Simon Harris and Independent Minister Sean Canney unveiled a €505 million rescue package, on top of the €250 million already promised weeks earlier. They will postpone the May carbontax rise, cut excise duty on petrol, diesel and green diesel further, and offer specific help to hard-pressed businesses

and farmers. It is a big and expensive bucket of cash thrown at a very angry public.

Sinn Féin immediately tabled a no-confidence motion, backed by the Social Democrats, People Before Profit and others. Mary Lou McDonald called the Government’s efforts “disastrous half-measures.” The Coalition has the numbers to survive the vote, but the damage to its authority is plain.

When you step back from

all the noise, two things really stick out. First, the Government was caught flat-footed.

Moaning on social media turned into tractor convoys with almost no warning.

Nobody in Government Buildings seemed to see it coming.

Ministers were talking tough about calling in the Army one day, then rowing back the next like they never said it. Our only refinery was virtually closed for a week. And that is not acceptable.

Second, the real problem lies far beyond Dublin. Oil prices have surged because US-Iran ceasefire talks collapsed and Washington blockaded Iranian ports and the Strait of Hormuz.

European gas prices jumped almost 9% in a single day.

Ireland, like every small open economy, is hostage to these global shocks.

Ordinary families and hauliers are right to feel squeezed.

The cost-of-living crisis is genuine. But turning peaceful anger into blockades that threaten emergency services

crosses a line. Nor does it help when some protesters allow far-right voices to hijack their cause with anti-immigrant slogans or calls to drill off Cork.

Throwing three-quarters of a billion euro at the problem may buy a few months of quiet. But it does nothing to fix our dependence on imported fuel or to protect us the next time the Middle East boils over.

A lasting answer needs more than subsidies. It requires proper energy security planning, investment in options and the political courage to level with voters that there are no pain-free solutions.

The blockades have gone for now. The petrol stations have refilled. Yet, the deeper crisis of prices, preparedness and political trust remains. If oil stays high, this week’s drama may prove to be the opening act. john@ellisfinancial.ie 086 8362633

Noonan welcomes NTA review of bus services following cancellation of expressway routes in South-East SENATOR MALCOLM NOONAN

Senator Malcolm Noonan has welcomed the decision by the National Transport Authority (NTA) to recommend a Public Service Obligation (PSO) route to replace the Carlow to Waterford service to replace a route withdrawn by Bus Eireann.

There was a lot of disappointment in the region when Bus Eireann decided to withdraw route 4 and to reduce frequency on route 40. These were vital services for students in particular but also commuters more generally in the region. I wrote

to both Minister O Brien and the NTA following the announcement. I welcome the quick turnaround of the review and the announcement that a PSO be funded to replace the Carlow to Waterford service’ said Senator Noonan.

‘The NTA will now need to act to implement it’s own recommendation as a matter of urgency and fund a replacement service along the R448 corridor; serving towns and villages along the route’.

Senator Noonan said that the news was mixed for Route 40 (Rosslare to Waterford) and that the NTA would examine the re-alignment of existing services on the route to ensure consistency through redistribution or

reconfiguration of services and meet the objectives of the Connecting Ireland National Transport Strategy. Route 40 was curtailed

by Bus Eireann due to commercial unviability.

‘While I welcome the determination in both cases, I am concerned generally that this Government has cut the capital programme for public transport and abandoned a commitment of 2:1 spend on public transport/cycling and walking. This is a retrograde step in the depths of an energy and a cost of living crisis and I would appeal to Fianna Fail and Fine Gael local and national representatives in the region to have this commitment reinstated’ concluded Senator Noonan.

Lieutenant Matthew Russell Cadet Russell is from Kilkenny City, Co. Kilkenny and is 25 years old. He is the son Eddie and Aine Russell. Before being awarded his Cadetship he was studying Business at the University Limerick.

Reflecting on recent events in Lebanon, the Minister condemned the attacks in which three Indonesian peacekeepers lost their lives in the pursuit of peace.

“I condemn those appalling attacks in the strongest terms.

These incidents represent a deeply concerning further escalation.

Those serving under the UN flag do so in pursuit of peace and stability. These incidents are an attack on the very principles of peace, cooperation and international solidarity.”

Minister McEntee quoted the words of the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, who said “attacks on peacekeepers are grave violations of international humanitarian law.

They must stop.”

The Minister also reiterated her commitment and that of the Government “to strengthening Ireland’s defence by increasing investment with a view to achieving a significantly enhanced capability by 2028 and, thereafter, moving

as quickly as possible to develop defence capabilities that would match those of other small Western European countries.

“Nobody doubts that the Defence Forces need greater investment, which is precisely why the Government is investing record funding, with €1.7 billion from the National Development Plan between now and 2030.”

Finally, the Minister congratulated the newly commissioned Officers, of whom she said “You bring honour on our country abroad. It is an enormous responsibility. I salute your courage and dedication.”

Pints of black ... at back-to-back And so the list goes on...

That illustrious sporting list, the list (and this is just a sample) that goes: where were you when Packie saved and David O’Leary scored? Where were you when Katie won Gold?

When Kelly won Gold twice? And now: where were you when Rory won back-to-back Masters in Augusta?

Me? I was in the Sceilp Inn just down the road from where I live. I was on a high stool and in the best of company, namely Frances, Brendan and Johnny, three neighbours of mine. Now there’s good and bad about watching sport, in this

case the golf, in good company. The good is that we’re all singing from the same hymn sheet (which we would be anyway) but because we’re enjoying each other’s company we’re singing in harmony, great harmony; we’re singing as a team or to use a word that’s orbiting in my brain at the moment – ‘crew’, thanks to the recently returned to Earth crew from Artemis 11.

And I loved mission specialist Christina Koch’s (the first woman to go to the Moon) reflection on looking down on Earth, this tiny ball in the incalcuble vastness of space: “We are

crew,” she said, implying, I guess, that Earth is our ‘capsule’ spinning in space and we humans, like any good crew, need to work together to look after it – though by God we sure don’t behave like a unified crew right now.

Then again, perhaps we never did!

And I thought it wonderful that the crew of four travelled further into space than any humans before and were first to observe the back side of the Moon – a feat almost as marvellous as Rory’s back-toback win in Augusta! And I presume their timing wasn’t lost on you all – I could just hear them talking to NASA saying: “Get us back to earth in time to see if Rory McIlroy can do the Masters backto-back.”

And boy but I’ve digressed. The downside to looking at sport in good company is that you occasionally take your eye off the ball, literally, because you’re too busy yapping and chatting until someone pipes up: “Hey, I thought he was two, not one, under or what hole is he on now?”

Back then to basics as in – folks, let’s park the pleasantries and watch the damn golf. The thing, of course, about watching golf is that, like the game itself, it’s rather calm and civilised. We applaud politely when a good shot is played and sigh quietly when there’s a mishit, unlike a hurling match where we shout and roar and even resort to foul language not least when a foul is committed on our

man that goes unchecked by the ref.

That’s what we need in golf – a referee! A visible one in standard black kit with a whistle, who we can vent our frustration on when things go awry.

And how would it work?

Haven’t a clue but we need someone to roar at, as in: “Would you get that crowd back from the fairway, ref, and tell those Yanks to stop hollering when our man’s putting.” You get the picture.

Well thank God there was no need for any of that carry-on in the Sceilp last Sunday night. Rory got his back-to-back and we strolled back home calmly and quietly contented.

Langton [pictured] on hearing that he is to receive the Freedom of our City – an honour, me thinks, long overdue. I drank in Langton’s when it was a cosy, charming bar and watched it evolve over the years into the ‘empire’ it has become thanks to Eamon’s brilliant business acumen.

I am in awe of you, sir, and I have, throughout the years, some marvellous memories of wining, dining, dancing, and more, in your exceptional establishment, now a renowned Kilkenny landmark and destination.

Communities across Kilkenny called on to help grant wishes as demand grows More than 300 children in Ireland are currently waiting for life-changing wishes as Make-A-Wish Ireland launches

Wish Week 2026, supported by its4women, calling on communities across the country to come together and

help meet growing demand.

The figure comes as the charity continues to expand its reach, granting 229 wishes

in 2025, its highest number to date, made possible through the generosity of the Irish public and corporate partners.

The nationwide fundraising campaign will run from Saturday, April 11th to Friday, April 17th, with a dedicated Donation Day on Friday, April 17th, when volunteers will be out in force in towns, shopping centres and communities across Ireland.

Now in its 18th year, Wish Week will shine a light on the power of a wish, bringing communities together to support children living with critical medical conditions and their families.

In 2025, Wish Week raised €245,000, helping Make-AWish Ireland increase the number of wishes delivered from 200 to 229. This year, the charity is aiming to raise €265,000 to continue growing the number of wishes granted annually.

Make-A-Wish Ireland has granted over 3,600 wishes since 1992, creating moments of joy, strength and hope for children living with life-threatening illnesses.

Paddy Deegan Kilkenny Senior Hurler and Make-AWish GPA Ambassador said: "I'm very proud to be a MakeA-Wish Ambassador. The work they do for sick children in Kilkenny and the rest of the country is incredible. They have collections all across the country for Wish Week 2026.

Any support from the public at these locations or through online donations would be incredible and will help to grant magical wishes in the region during 2026."

David Burns, Head of Fundraising at Make-A-Wish Ireland, said: “Wish Week is a moment for communities across Ireland to come together and make a real difference. A wish can bring hope, strength and joy to a child and their family during incredibly difficult times.

Thanks to the generosity of the public and partners like its4women, we were able to increase the number of wishes granted last year, but with over 300 children currently waiting, the need has never been greater. We are asking people to support their local volunteers, donate what they can, and help us reach even more children this year.”

Choices Shape Your Future

Spring cleaning for mind, body and home One recent bright, warm and sunny day, I lay out on my lawn soaking the heat into my bones. I really needed it after 60 days of rain. It was wonderful to feel the light and warmth on my body.

I listened to the birds and watched them with twigfilled beaks and nest building materials getting ready to construct their new homes.

They were working hard with the renewed energy that Spring brings in its wake.

After all the darkness of winter, the cold and the rain, it’s pure joy to feel a sense of renewal, freshness and regeneration. Everything is waking up after the long sleep of winter. The sap is rising and ever- faithful Mother Nature once again magics forth new shoots, buds and pale green leaves. All this miraculous awakening mysteriously occurs without any human interference. It is beauty.

It is happiness. It is joy. We

need to stop and look and experience the awe Creation deserves. It’s truly a miracle unfolding before our eyes and in our busy-ness we often fail to see and take it for granted.

In the dark months, my windows appear clean; in brighter light, their dirt becomes visible. They have some smears and a lot of tiny dots which I am convinced are the footprints of flies.

The local flies have been traipsing all over my window panes with very dirty feet and it has taken a lot of elbow grease to remove their traces.

Now that the windows are sparkling, shiny and clean, my view out onto the world has a clearer vision and my thoughts turn to how light affects our pineal gland. Daylight inhibits the pineal gland from producing melatonin which is “the sleep hormone”.

Darkness stimulates it. The

pineal helps us establish our daily rhythms of sleep, temperature and mood. The more there’s light, the more we feel energised and awake, and there’s more spring in our steps.

In springtime we start to look forward with our intentions. Like the birds we can start to renew our spaces and spring clean.

Every spring, my grandmother would take the furniture outdoors into the light, she’d beat her carpets, wash the curtains and dust, mop, clean and polish all the surfaces. She’d shake out her summer clothes and stow away her woolly jumpers in her drawers which smelled of moth balls! I can smell the memory!

Everything would be freshly repositioned in her house; the windows would always be open and there was a freshness in the air. She was literally clearing out the old energy of the year gone by

and each year would be a new beginning.

Spring is an opportunity to declutter and to lighten the amount of stuff that we’ve accumulated. Marie Kondo, the queen of organising, says everything needs a home and a home needs to be tidy.

Discipline is freedom. If we know where things are, we

save time and energy looking for them. She says, keep only things that are useful or bring you joy.

Spring cleaning is not only a physical labour but also about giving us more mental space. Space for intuition, space for our dreams, our creativity and our intentions.

It can be a time for a vision board or making resolutions and new habits.

We could all do with a bit of inner cleansing. I’m not talking here necessarily about a few dietary adjustments, which might be a good idea…but about mental hygiene.

What’s mental hygiene?

It’s a new term for the daily activities and habits we can cultivate to enhance our overall well-being such as: mindfulness, journalling and gratitude practices which help us build resilience, empathy, compassion and foster a positive outlook on life. Out with bad habits and

in with new ones!

Meditation allows us to watch the endless stream of our meandering thoughts, and this allows us to observe them rather than identify with them. Meditation creates more discernment and choice in our lives as opposed to our being constantly reactive and emotional. It brings more balance, inner peace, ease and less drama!

In these uncertain times we need to be wide awake and more enlightened as we navigate so much chaos.

We need to shine our light on each other. As Marianne Williamson says, “It is our light, not our darkness that we fear, as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” www.judithashton.com

Gowran on the move kicks off Easter in style

Gowran on the Move brought the village together in fine fashion last weekend, hosting their first Easter Fun Day at the new playground in Gowran and by all accounts, it was well worth the trip.

Families turned out in force to enjoy a packed programme of activities, including an Easter egg hunt, a unique Easter Bunny chase, a raffle, and a host of classic games: Hang Tough, Beat the Buzzer, and Marble Madness among them.

There was no shortage of competitive spirit, and plenty of laughter to go with it.

The event also served as a timely showcase for the popular new facility, which continues to be a welcome addition to the heart of the village. Funds raised on the day will go towards the group's ongoing development plans, the next phase of which is already in the pipeline.

Gowran on the Move were full of praise for those who came along: "It was fantastic to see so many turn out, and we're incredibly grateful for everyone's continued contributions."

With a first event like this under their belt, Gowran on the Move will be looking forward to what comes next.

Community group The Eastern Environs Community Group in St John's had a marvellous afternoon in the Parish Centre recently.

Community Gardai dropped by to share loads of useful info’ on everything from passport apps to staying safe online and protecting your turf.

The lively session covered passport applications, online security, safe banking, and beefing up personal and home security.

Afterwards, it was all laughs and a brew as the group and Gardai chilled out over tea and cakes.

If you’re thinking of growing your own vegetables this year, now is a good time to start. Mid-April is one of the most useful points in the gardening calendar. With the soil beginning to warm up, there are plenty of reliable, easy vegetables ready to sow or plant in Kilkenny gardens.

For beginners, potatoes are often one of the most satisfying crops.

They are straightforward to grow, suit our conditions well, and can be planted in the ground, in raised beds or even in large containers.

Salad crops are another easy win. Lettuce and radish are both quick to grow and don’t need much space, making them ideal for smaller gardens. A short row or even a few containers can keep a household supplied with fresh leaves and crunchy radishes over the coming weeks. Carrots and beetroot are also good choices for home growers, especially in well-prepared soil with plenty of sun.

Peas and spring onions are a good choice too, particularly for gardeners who want something productive without too much fuss.

Perpetual spinach and Swiss chard are also useful options, as they can be sown from April and picked over a long period.

The main thing is to keep it simple. Start with two or three vegetables you actually like to eat, choose a sunny spot, and do not sow more than you can manage. In Kilkenny, where late frosts can still catch tender plants, it makes sense to stick with hardy crops for now and leave more delicate summer vegetables until later.

Support for owners taking on older homes HOME SMART

If you have leftover wallpaper, don’t leave it sitting in a cupboard.

One of the simplest ways to give a room a lift is to use offcuts in smaller, unexpected places. The back of a bookshelf, the inside panels of a cabinet, a drawer lining or even the risers on a staircase can all be given a fresh look with a carefully chosen print or texture.

It is a handy way to add colour and character, and it works especially well in hallways, home offices and spare rooms that need a little interest. It can also tie a room scheme together by repeating a pattern already used elsewhere in the house.

Small changes like this often have more impact than people expect. It’s inexpensive, makes use of what you already have and can turn overlooked corners into something far more special.

There is welcome news for Kilkenny homeowners planning work on an older property: a grant of up to €5,000 is now available to help cover the cost of specialist conservation advice.

The updated scheme, recently announced by the Department of Housing, is aimed at people renovating, upgrading or converting traditional houses. It will cover up to 67 per cent of the cost of an expert report, to a maximum of €5,000.

That advice could relate to conservation works, fire safety, energy upgrades or pre-works assessments before a retrofit project begins. For many owners of older homes, that kind

of guidance can be money well spent.

Traditional buildings often need a different approach from modern houses, particularly when it comes to ventilation, insulation, moisture and building materials. The wrong work or the wrong advice can lead to costly mistakes and even damage the property’s character.

One of the main changes to the scheme is that it’s no longer limited to vacant houses.

It has now been widened to include some owner-occupied traditional homes, farmhouses, former commercial buildings being converted for residential use, and certain properties in Architectural Conservation Areas or with protected status.

The scheme also links in with the SEAI Traditional Homes Pilot, which is designed to support more suitable energy upgrades for older properties.

If you’re already looking at the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant, this may

prove another useful support, especially at the early planning stage.

Applications for the Conservation Advice Scheme (available through the Department of Housing) must be submitted by 5pm on May 8.

Bowel screening to cover ages 50-54

HEALTH Bowel cancer screening is to be extended to people aged 50 to 54, Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill has said.

The move follows advice from the Health Information and Quality Authority (Hiqa), which found consistent evidence that screening from the age of 50 reduces deaths from colorectal cancer compared with no screening.

Bowel cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in Ireland. On average, around 2,750 new cases are diag-

nosed each year and about 1,000 people die from the disease. It is the second most common cancer in men and the third most common in women.

“Our assessment examined the available evidence and we have advised the National Screening Advisory Committee that there are clear clinical benefits to expanding the programme to those aged 50-54 years old,” Hiqa’s deputy CEO and director of health technology assessment, Dr Máirín Ryan, said.

Ireland’s screening programme was launched in 2012, aiming to offer screening to people aged 55 to 74 every two years. As of this month, the programme currently invites those aged 57 to 71, though it still aims to cover the wider age group.

Hiqa said that nine of the 10 studies it reviewed showed that screening from age 50 can reduce deaths from bowel cancer. Five studies also suggested screening may reduce

the number of people who develop the disease by helping detect and remove polyps before they become cancerous.

However, expanding the programme will place added pressure on services. Hiqa said it could mean up to 219,000 more invitations each year and require more than 2,000 additional colonoscopies annually.

In accepting the recommendation, Minister Carroll MacNeill said she had asked the HSE to implement an “ambitious plan” on a phased basis.

Shake it off… but does it work?

FITNESS If fitness trends are anything to go by, vibration plates are back. A quick scroll online will bring up no shortage of videos showing people standing, squatting or stretching on shaking platforms, often alongside claims about toning, fat loss and improved circulation.

The concept is not especially new. Whole-body vibration has been around for decades and was originally explored as a training tool. What is new is the latest burst of attention around it, helped along by social media

and the promise of a workout that looks easier than most.

plates as a standard treatment.

There are also safety questions. Mayo Clinic advises speaking to a healthcare professional before using one if you are pregnant or have a medical condition, and notes that more research is still needed.

In other words, vibration plates may have some benefits, but they are best seen as an add-on, not a EZLIFE miracle fix.

If you have a few small jobs to do - replying to a message, making an appointment, paying a bill, writing a shopping list - try doing them standing at the kitchen counter instead of sitting down with your phone on the sofa.

It sounds minor, but it can help in two ways. First, it stops quick tasks from turning into a long spell of scrolling. Second, it brings a bit more movement into the day without feeling like exercise. You are more likely to stay focused, get the job done and move on.

It also helps create a useful mental shift. Sitting down often signals switching off, while standing encourages a bit more purpose and momentum.

It is not a major lifestyle overhaul, just a small habit that can make everyday tasks feel less heavy and less drawn out.

Sometimes the easiest wellness changes are the ones that simply help life run a bit better.

McGuinness welcomes €587,000 in Community Monuments Funding for Carlow and Kilkenny Leas Ceann Comhairle and Fianna Fáil TD for Carlow-Kilkenny, John McGuinness, has warmly welcomed the announcement of funding under the 2026 Community Monuments Fund, which will see a total of €587,000 invested across nine projects in Carlow and Kilkenny.

The national fund, totalling over €8 million—an increase of €500,000 on last year—will support 104 projects nationwide aimed at protecting and enhancing Ireland’s archaeological heritage.

Deputy McGuinness said: “This is a very welcome and important investment in our local heritage. The Community Monuments Fund plays a vital role in preserving the rich archaeological and historical assets we are fortunate to have across Carlow and Kilkenny. These sites are not only of historical significance but are also central to community identity, tourism, and education.”

He added: “I particularly welcome the continued increase in funding, which reflects the growing recognition of the importance of heritage protection. The projects supported this year will ensure that key monuments are conserved, made more accessible, and protected for future generations.”

Deputy McGuinness also paid tribute to local communities and custodians: “I want to commend the local groups, volunteers, and heritage professionals whose dedication ensures these monuments are maintained and appreciated. Their work is essential in safeguarding our shared history.”

The Moat in Callan was believed to be a haven for the Little Folk

Ghosts and fairy folk in Callan

Reminiscing on the people who lived in Callan years ago, the acclaimed newspaper correspondent Peter Roughan also commented on those who were supposed to be in it, but probably weren’t.

“Then again, there’s no smoke without fire”, he cautioned, and if smoke was ever seen rising from the back of the Moat, Peter suggested there might be no need to call for the Fire Engine. It could be the “little folk” boiling a drop of water for the tea.

Peter learned a lot about the fairies on the Moat (what Callan people call the old Normal Motte) from Annie Keating of Bridge Street. She had all the old stories and legends off by heart. She related the common belief held in past decades that the Moat “opened up” at night or at dawn to allow the little folk out on their wanderings, to the chant of “Open, open little hill, and let the King of the Fairies in.”

Callan people shunned the Moat during the hours of darkness; they believed the fairies would punish any intrusions on their mysterious nocturnal revelries. There were tales of unlucky locals who availed of moonlit nights to pick saddle grass and other herbs with curative properties on the Moat. Infuriated fairies chased them away.

In her childhood, Annie heard numerous claims from old people in the area concerning night time subterranean passages in the Grove that would disappear in the morning, and of fairy rings that stretched from the “Little Hill” at the back of the Moat to the “Little Bush”. The

large ring of beaten grass was said to have been a dancing ground of the fairies.

Mushrooms and toadstools were always found in abundance around this fairy ring. In the days before electricity, Callan folk spun many a fireside tale about the much feared “fairy blast”, what Annie called “the wind that screeched through the pines and howled around the moat and was not good for man or beast.”

More down to earth locals heard the same blast around the Moat but referred to it as “The Roaring forties from Neary’s Inch.”

But not even the fairies could distract the Callan fishermen, who sat patiently along the riverbank on the darkest nights: Annie recalled: “nothing could divert their gaze from the ripple on the trout stream”.

The fairies, according to Annie, were also rumoured to have visited Kilbricken, where they apparently took a liking to Madigan’s field. Some people who were picking mushrooms out there in the summer heard a whistling noise, though there was not a gust of wind that day.

A sudden blast of wind swept up cocks of hay off the ground. “For a while, it seemed that the heavens were full of magic carpets”, Annie reflected. She opined that perhaps a few of the flying saucers allegedly spotted in the fifties might have been nothing more than Madigan’s “prime upland meadowing!”

road and in Butler’s field at the Minauns.

Butler’s raheen was reputedly a favourite spot for the fairies on a moonlit night.

But you had to be careful to keep an eye out for Col. Butler’s bull, or you could end up being “tossed in the foggy dew!”

Fairy cobblers were allegedly seen busily mending shoes in Downey’s field at Kilbricken. In the pubs of Callan, and at the firesides, people swore that there was a Leprechaun’s workshop in Kilbricken, though the lads at Mill Lane corner laughed at visitors from out of town who asked to be shown the way to this facility. Leprechauns are said to have made regular appearances at Crowraddie.

There was one who, it seems, enjoyed relaxing under a nut tree in Johnnie

Downey’s field, though he might also be seen hammering nails into a fairy horse shoe on a little anvil, with rabbits standing to attention around him.

One evening, some rather credulous people who thought they heard fairy music discovered that it was not the Little Folk at all, but ‘Brian Boru’s March’ coming from Paddy McCormack’s wireless.

Anyone can make a mistake!

Ghosts put in an appearance too in the Callan area.

If you took a late night stroll among the trees of the Dark Walk (since cut down), you might hear loud moanings.

Annie Keating recalled that it was a lonely stretch from Jim Canavan’s shed down to Dunne’s gate in the corner.

One night, Annie’s grandmother, Margaret Canavan was returning from a birth-she was a midwifewhen she and the man who

drove the ass and cart had a “close encounter” with the supernatural. They had just finished locking up the ass in the stable and were all set to walk the last few hundred yards home. Suddenly, they stopped in their tracks.

Though a plucky woman, Nurse Canavan was terrified by the ghostly form that appeared in front of them: A long white-gowned lady stood at Dunne’s gate, wailing like the mythical banshee. The nurse and her driver took to their heels and ran like the wind. When she got home, Mrs. Canavan had great difficulty convincing her two daughters, Babs (Annie’s mother) and Katie, that she had seen a ghost. They roared laughing at her story.

Peter Roughan was sceptical of ghost stories, but had a vivid memory of the principal alleged entities that roamed his native Callan:

He wrote: “I wonder what’s happened to all the white ladies, tall men, and headless coaches that used to be seen around the town. There was one lady who was very fond of rambling around the Moat field, but no one could tell us if she was the same one who often sat on the wall at Mickey Hello’s orchard down the Buckaleen road.

“Of course the tall man that Will Brien used to meet below Tommy Heron’s back gate was the same chap that Tommy Byrne the baker used to see out near Betty’s Bridge. They both agreed he was the same fellow, though he always bid Tommy the time of the night but never spoke to Will. Then there was the headless coach that Ger Murphy used to see coming up from Westcourt.

Ger always made out that the coachman was a better driver than Peter Kennedy ever washe never bothered to open the lodge gates.

“We never believed the story about the lady who used to come down the Dark Walk with no shoes on. We knew no one could walk down there in daytime without stumbling over tree roots. The ghost that often paid a visit to Molloy’s old castle must have got fed up calling as the years went by.

“The new tombstones in the yard must have frightened him off, But Jack Cass used to tell us that this was the same fellow that used to ramble down the Blind Bosheen.

And that must have been the same chap that Martin Grant used to meet above at Mikey Healy’s in Slade.

“There must have been a whole colony of them up in Grace’s old ‘spirit house’ in Coolalong, although Micky Power said it was all a cod, as he walked home to Kilbride at all hours of the night and never saw a thing.”

ZON, are now available in 16 Insomnia locations nationwide. Although Insomnia has two cafés in Kilkenny, neither is included in the launch at present.

The move reflects the growing popularity of açaí in Ireland, with the Amazonian berry proving a hit among customers looking for plantbased, dairy-free and graband-go options.

Three bowls are on offer: Totally Bananas (€8.55), topped with banana, almond butter, chia seeds, coconut and gluten-free granola; Berrylicious (€8.95), with blueberries and strawberries; and All in One (€9.55), which combines both fruit options.

Already a staple on café menus in cities around the world, açaí bowls have become a major food trend in recent years. Insomnia says the new range offers customers a fresh option for breakfast, lunch or a lighter treat.

Spoon the batter into the prepared dish and spread it evenly.

CAFÉ CULTURE

For the sauce, mix the brown sugar and cocoa powder together and sprinkle evenly over the pudding mixture. Pour the boiling water carefully over the back of a spoon so it covers the surface gently. Dot with the butter and scatter over the sea salt.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes. The top should be set and spongelike, while underneath a rich chocolate caramel sauce will have formed.

Let it stand for 5 minutes before serving. Spoon into bowls, making sure everyone gets plenty of the warm sauce from the bottom of the dish.

This is a dessert for nights when only something unapologetically rich will do. The contrast of hot pudding and melting ice cream makes it even better.

In a large bowl, mix the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and sugar. In a jug, whisk together the melted chocolate, melted butter, milk, egg and vanilla. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir until you have a smooth batter.

Method Preheat the oven to 180°C and lightly butter a medium baking dish.

A musical homecoming MUSIC Returning to Kilkenny to perform with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in St Canice’s Cathedral is a homecoming with deep personal meaning for Patrick Rafter, founder of the Marble City Music Festival. Speaking to the Kilkenny Observer, Patrick reflects on a journey that began at 12 years old, busking on the streets of Kilkenny to save for his first proper violin. This May, he returns to the city in a very different role: as solo violinist and artistic director, bringing two major concerts to his home city as part of the festival.

Having grown up listening to the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and watching them in concert, he says performing with them now in Kilkenny feels

“quite surreal”.

“Kilkenny is home and always will be,” he says. “It’s the most important place in the world to me. You carry your roots with you, and mine are very firmly here.” Despite spending much of his adult life in different European cities, he says the support of his home city “has never left” him. His connection with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra has also grown over time, and he describes them as “an incredible bunch - musically and personally”.

That sense of connection is at the heart of Marble City Music Festival, which he founded in 2023 to bring world-class music to Kilkenny. “Classical music has this reputation of being distant or exclusive, which is so far from the truth when you actually

attend an event,” he says. “It’s immediate, emotional and accessible to everyone.” Creating an atmosphere where people feel comfortable walking in, whether it is their first concert or their hundredth, has been central to the festival’s vision.

This year’s festival includes two stellar performances. The Great Romantics sees Patrick join the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in St Canice’s Cathedral for an evening of “big, emotional, unapologetically beautiful music”, featuring some of the most powerful and recognisable works in the repertoire.

Among them is Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, a piece he especially loves: “It’s one of those pieces that feels completely suspended in time - there’s a stillness and a freedom in it that’s very rare.”

He will also direct and perform with Luminosa Orchestra in The Four Seasons & Virtuoso Fire at St Canice’s RC Church, featuring Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Saint-Saëns’ Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso and Elgar’s Serenade for Strings.

For Patrick, the setting is part of what makes performing at home so special. He has played in St Canice’s Cathedral since the age of 14 and still remembers the moment when “time seemed to stop before I played that first note”.

For those new to classical music, he believes this festival is the perfect place to start.

“There’s no barrier to entry here,” he says. “You just sit down and listen.”

KilkennyGAA clubs and Communitynews CLARA MINORS WIN Clara minor hurlers had a hard earned victory over Dicksboro’s B team in Clara. This was a tight affair all the way through and once again the battling qualities of these Clara lads came to the fore as they emerged with a 4-14 to 5-8 win to claim the two points. Clara had only thirteen players here and the Boro sportingly agreed to match those numbers.

Jack Byrne opened the scoring from a free before the Boro grabbed their first goal. Clara scored the next 5 points in a row through Ruairi Bowden Mullen (2), Aidan O Connell and Jack Byrne (2).

Dicksboro then hit 3 on the spin before Aaron Carrigan hit a real peach of a point from the sideline.

Two goals in quick succession had the Boro in a commanding position but Clara hit back with two points from Aaron Carrigan (a free) and Jack Byrne.

A further Dicksboro goal would have knocked the heart out of most teams but from there to the interval the Clara boys hit back with two goals of their own from first Jack Byrne from long range and then a really cool finish by James McDonald. This left the Boro with a slender 4-4 to 2-9 lead at the break.

Wind assisted Dicksboro hit the first point of the new half, but Jack Byrne replied immediately.

Then after the Boro had pointed a free Clara hit two fine goals through Aaron Carrigan and Ruairi Bowden Mullen to take a lead that they would never relinquish. Aaron Carrigan and Jack Byrne kept the scoreboard ticking and although Dicksboro struck for a late goal, Clara held out for a deserved win. As well as those already mentioned Clara had good performances from Sam Lawlor, Sam Corr and Raphael Scanlon. A lot of these players are improving with every outing and have the ability to have long careers with Clara.

FOOTBALLERS BOW OUT Piltown reversed an earlier season loss to Clara on Sunday in Clara when they dumped the home side out of the championship at the semifinal stage.

Hugh Kelly notched the first point of the game from a free, but this was the only time Clara led in the entire match. Wind assisted Piltown took a firm grip on proceedings and got the next nine scores, one of them a two pointer. Chris Bolger got one back for Clara before the break to leave it 0-10 to 0-2. The referee had awarded a penalty to Clara just before halftime but then strangely threw the ball in following consultation with the umpires. They had also lost centre back Liam Ryan to a nasty gash over his eyebrow.

They turned with the wind in their favour and needed a quick start to the half, but it was Piltown that got the first two points to take a ten point lead.

However, Clara really knuckled down from here and halftime substitutes Paddy Bolger and Ciaran Prendergast were prominent in sparking a comeback. Clara got the next five scores, including a two pointer each for Killian Phelan and Hugh Kelly. Joe Power, Hugh Kelly and Chris Bolger added single points, and the lead was down to a manageable 3 points. Clara were also to regret nine wides, a few of which should have been scored, and a couple of discipline infractions which gave Piltown simple tap over frees. But down the stretch it was Piltown that held their nerve and got the last two points of the game to advance to the county final.

COMMUNITY GAMES NEWS The Community Games season has kicked off for another year. St John’s Community Games had three indoor soccer teams in action on Friday night last in the Leinster Quarter finals of the Cairn Community Games. All three faced opposition from Carlow with the two boys team playing teams from Burren and the girls opposing Slaney Valley.

All teams put in super efforts given they had only trained together for a short time and were unlucky not to progress. Also, the St John’s athletics community games finals take place on 26th of April in St. John’s Park at 2.15pm for children aged 7

FRESHFORD WEDDINGS The marriage ceremony and reception took place on Thursday last at Ballintubbert House and Gardens, Stradbally between Robert O’Brien of Knocktopher and Elaine Grace youngest daughter of John Joe and Eileen Grace, Clontubrid Freshford.

Maid of Honour was Sabrina Grace, and bridesmaids were Joanne Walsh and Carmen Grace. Best man was Bobby O’Brien and groomsman Michael Grace and Odhran Grace. The Flower girl was Roisin Munnelly. The couple head off on a Mediterranean cruise this week and are wished all the best in their married life together.

Congratulations and best wishes also go out to local lad Brendan Quinn, Kilkenny St. Freshford and Giollaoise Meaney from Clara who were married on Friday last in Clara Church. The reception was held in Hotel Kilkenny. Brendan was a member of St Lachtain’s junior hurling side who won the All Ireland club final in January 2025 and is now a member of the local intermediate side. They are wished all the best of health and happiness in their married life together.

OLLIE KENNY RIP There was sadness in the local area following the death of Ollie Kenny late of Clomantagh Lower Barna last week. Although he had been unwell for some time nevertheless his passing caused widespread sorrow and regret. Ollie was predeceased by his wife Kathleen, his daughter Louise and his grandson James. He was a hardworking man and was well known and respected in the area. Funeral mass took place in Graine church followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery. He is deeply mourned by his son Jimmy his grandchildren, great grandchildren, daughter in law, son in law, brothers, sister and extended family to whom deepest sympathy is extended.

CHARLIE’S MEMORIAL The annual Charlie Colclough memorial darts tournament was held on Saturday evening last in Kavanagh’s bar with a big turnout. The tournament is held in memory of local man Charlie who passed away a few years ago and was a great darts enthusiast. There was a Ladies and Gents tournament on the day with some great darts and finishes. In the women’s semifinals Majella Colclough and Tamara Colclough came through to the final with Tamara managing to defeat her auntie to take the trophy. In the men’s final two local lads faced up to each other with Enda Walsh taking on Liam Hickey in a great

final with Liam coming out on top. Presentation and MC were carried out by Joe Colclough. Charlies’ daughter Chloe thanked all who participated and all who helped in any way including a special mention to all who donated prizes. All proceeds of over €1,230 went to Cois Noir Kilkenny.

FRESHFORD AND DISTRICT DARTS Freshford and district league darts are now at the semi final stages. In the B league final will see McGrath’s take on Seanie’s on Friday 17th April in Kavanagh’s at 9.30 pm. The John McGrath Cup sees Farrell’s V McGrath’s B and Seanie’s v Kavanagh’s A. The final will be held in McGraths on Friday 24th April.

The C league final will take place in Seanie’s on 25th April, and the A league semi final Killeen’s will take in Kavanagh’s in Farrell’s with final on Fri 1st May in Connolly GAA St Lachtains minors defeated Bennettsbridge in Pairc Lachtain in the The Roinn C league on a scoreline of 0- 25 to 4-10.

The u 14 footballers lost out to same opposition in the Roinn B Semi final on a score of 9-5 to 6-5.

Bennettsbridge returned to Pairc Lachtain for the third time in four days when the junior B hurlers defeated St. Lachtains in the first round of the league on a final score of 1-13 to 0-13.

The u 15 footballers competed in the Feile Div.1 last Sunday. They defeated St Martin’s in the quarter final 2-3 to 3-3 but lost out to Young Irelands of Gowran in the semi final. The boys represented the club in div1 in both codes this week and can be proud of their efforts.

St Lachtains junior F got their league campaign off to a good start with a draw 1-27 to 3-11 against neighbours Tullaroan The u 14 footballers take on Galmoy/Windgap in the B championship in Pairc Lachtain on Friday evening at 6.30pm. In the junior B league at Lachtains travel to Danesfort on Friday evening to take on Danesfort at 7 pm and in the u 16A league at Lachtains take on St Martin’s on Monday in Coon at 6.45pm LOTTO There was no jackpot winner in the lotto last week.

PENALTY KINGS OF KILKENNY A special and exciting day is planned for May 31st at the Sportsfield in Woodview, promising fun, competition, and celebration for all ages. The highlight of the day will be a thrilling team event, where participants are invited to put their skills to the test. If you think you and your friends have what it takes, come along and prove it. JAMES STEPHENS GAA AND CAMOGIE CLUB FEILE FOOTBALL An early morning start to Sunday’s 2026 U-15 Feile Peil tournament in John Lockes Park, Callan saw the Village lads take the game to Mooncoin from the throw-in which helped to secure a 2-01 to 1-01 victory at the end of play. The margin might have been greater but for a brave goalkeeping display by the Mooncoin netminder. In the semi-final against O’Loughlin Gaels the Village continued their positive approach, leading from the start but failing to turn dominance into scores, it left them vulnerable to counter attacks. With minutes left on the clock the determined O’ Loughlin’s team hit the front with a three pointer but a dramatic well engineered team effort finished to the net by Odhran Cantwell secured a place in the final for the Village lads. In the final against Young Irelands the Village continued their trademark fast start which served them well as they raced into a 1-05 to 0-01 halftime lead. With the Gowran lads unable to mount a comeback in the 2nd half two more goals was sufficient for James Stephens to claim the Division 1 Feile Peil title and the right to represent Kilkenny in the national final in Derry in June. The full playing panel deserve huge credit for their efforts over the three-game tournament with a special mention for full back Aidan Malone, team captain Codie Owens, midfielders J.J. Fogarty and Joe Hanrahan and forwards Jeffrey Cleere, Henry Phelan and Odhran Cantwell.

Community & GAA Notes Eamon was a regular member of the club’s senior team throughout the 1960’s. Their late brother Seamus Fry served as club president from 1987 to his passing in 1991. Seamus was a strong believer in promoting Gaelic games within the youth membership of the club and to honour that memory the family has loyally sponsored and attended the Seamus Fry U-12 hurling tournament in the club for over 30 years. Following Requiem Mass in St. John’s church, Paddy was laid to rest in St. Kieran’s cemetery “Air dheis Dei go raibh a anam dilis” MINOR “A” HURLING LEAGUE On Friday evening in Larchfield two talented minor teams, James Stephens and Ballyhale Shamrocks failed to master the weather conditions resulting in a low scoring game dominated by robust defending by both clubs. Ballyhale had first use of the howling wind and rain but could not build a substantial lead, the sides ending level at 0-04 each at the break. On the turnover The Village lads soon found out that they too would be afflicted with the same problems, unable to find the crossbar when freed from the shackles of the tight Ballyhale defence.

However, with the game tied at 0-06 each in the 27th minute an outstanding long range shot from centre back Andrew Brennan found the target to give James Stephens the narrowest of victories at 0-07 to 0-06. Their 2nd league fixture of the weekend against Danesfort on Sunday evening in Larchfield couldn’t have been more different with both teams committed to a fast open style of play which produced a high scoring encounter. From the start The Village put the neighbours under constant pressure, forcing fouls which the in-form Andrew Brennan punished, converting 0-08 points of the team’s 10 point total to level the game at half time.

A brilliant solo run by centre back James O’Brien in the 1st minute of the second half triggered a flow of points to give James Stephens a 0-14 to 0-12 lead at the 10th minute. Confusion in The Village defence allowed Danesfort through for a goal in the 12th minute to take a narrow lead, but the Village team’s response was effective with closing points from goalkeeper Cian Dermody, (21min), Liam O’Brien (19 and 31mins), Rory Glynn (20min) and Andrew Brennan (25min) to deservedly claim 0-21 to 1-15 victory. Full league points for the weekends efforts was a great reward for hurlers and management team.

JUNIOR “B” LEAGUE Out the road in Pairc Sheamuis Stiophan on the same evening the club’s Junior B hurlers were able to contend far better with the weather conditions while chalking up a 2-13 to 2-07 for Kilmacow in

their 1st round Junior “B” league fixture.

JUNIOR “F” LEAGUE On Sunday afternoon a piece of history was created when for the first time the club fielded a 5th adult team in the 2026 Junior “F” hurling league against O’Loughlin Gaels in Pairc Sheamuis Stiophan. Credit to the selectors who gathered a panel of 20 players for the fixture. With a mix of experienced and youthful players the team battled against the strong wind to trail by 0-06 to 1-02 at the break. The Village goal came via a determined follow-up by Stephen Renehan from a floating delivery by Bill Lahart.

Despite some brave defensive work throughout the 2nd half the stronger O’Loughlins team were able to build on their lead. Despite a commendable fight back which saw goals delivered by Paddy Lacey and Aaron Dorney it just failed to haul in ‘The Gaels who won out on a 0-18 to 3-07 scoreline.

KILKENNY U-20 At the end of Saturday evening’s U-20 second round Leinster U-20 Championship fixture in stormy UPMC Nowlan Park there must have been a collective sigh of relief in the Kilkenny camp as wing forward Patrick Lacey’s free from a distance out sailed over the bar to earn the Black and Amber men a share of the points with the fired up Wexford lads at 2-15 to 1-18. Only minutes earlier the Model county lads had crashed the sliothar to the Kilkenny net passed a helpless Billy O’Sullivan to take a two-point lead well into added time. Sharing in the relief were the Village representatives Ed McDermott, Ed Lauhoff, Sean Bergin and Billy O’Sullivan. Club player, Bill McDermott is a member of the extended panel.

Manager Henry Shefflin and his team will have to ensure that his charges raise their game significantly against strong Galway and Dublin line ups if their ambition to retain the Leinster title is to be achieved.

DOGGIE NIGHT A reminder to members that the club fundraiser, “Going to the Dogs” takes place on Friday evening 17th April in Kilkenny Greyhound track starting at 7.30pm. Tickets cost €10 per adult with accompanied children FREE. The Family Fun event, with the prospect of “making a few bob” on the night, will also see the final of the Sean “Georgie” Leahy Memorial Race being run off during the evening.

GOLF SUCCESS Congratulations to young Sean Sheeran, son of the club’s senior football selector, Brian Sheeran who won the Leinster Boys U-16 Amateur Open championship title with on a countback of the final score.

The venue for the competition was in the excellently presented Bunclody Golf club and attracted an entry of 120 young golfers, including one player from the UK. Sean, a member of Kilkenny Golf Club, carded a level par round of 72, covering the front nine in 39 shots but his back nine of 33 was enough to claim the title from Dun Laoighaire GC members Sean Nolan and Ethan Edwards. A wonderful achievement for the young junior cert student.

Kathleen will be deeply missed by her sons – Pádraig and Dara, daughters – Máire O’Halloran, Aisling Uí Mhaonaigh, sons-in-law – Aidan O’Halloran, Joe Meaney and Peter Stapleton, daughters-in-law – Úna Farrell and Linda Roe, sister Ann Murphy, sister-in-law Mary Brannigan, grandchildren: Dearbháil, Shane, Killian, Áilise, Oisín, Fionn, Vonnie, Cian, Evanne, Tiernan, Niall, Deirdre, Ciara, Gráinne, Sinéad, Niamh, Caoimhe, Oscar, Bríon, Éabha, Muirne and her 15 greatgrandchildren. nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews extended family and friends.

Reposal was at her residence. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St Kieran’s Church, Tullaherin, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery.

GRAIGUENAMANAGH DUISKE PLAYERS Well, that’s a wrap on three fantastic nights in the Abbey Hall for our spring season. CHAMPIONS! Highview Athletic u16 girls are League Champions.

A 0-0 draw away to Callan in really tough conditions was enough to give the girls the League win and

an unbeaten season. We peppered the Callan goal in the first half but couldn’t find a breakthrough. A strong defensive performance in the second half was enough to get us over the line. Heroics in the last five minutes by our ‘keeper Megan O’Grady was needed to keep Callan scoreless. Huge thank you to all the parents for travelling all over the county during the winter months. A special mention the teams sponsors Barrons Sports for their support over the year.

HIDHVIEW ATHLETIC Our U12 Blue team travelled to Thomastown on Thursday evening for a highly competitive local derby. In a match dominated by a strong wind, the visitors started brightly, applying constant pressure.

The deadlock was broken early when Howard’s quick free kick found Conor Clifford, who converted for a 1-0 lead.

Thomastown fought back and equalized with a strong effort from distance, but the deadlock didn’t last long. Late in the first half, Charlie Walsh produced a moment of individual brilliance, embarking on a driving run and finishing from a difficult angle to restore the lead.

The second half required a different approach as the team played against the wind. Noah was excellent in goal, supported by a resolute defensive unit of Eoin, Shane, and Conor. In midfield, Howard, Pauric, and Neil took control, while Daniel led the press from the front. The introduction of Sam and Finn provided fresh legs at a crucial moment, ensuring the team maintained their composure to secure a hard-earned 2-1 win.

Our under U11 Girls made the trip to Derdimus Park for the final of The St Canice’s Credit Union Plate Final, against Lions AFC of Durrow. First half goals from Sophie Walsh (2), Emma Hayden and Grace Nolan saw the girls go 4-0 up with an emphatic display all over the field. Following a dominant first half, they went in leading 4-1. The second half saw them come out strongly, and they were unlucky to concede a second. Sophie Walsh then completed her hatrick, and Highview ran out as comfortable 5-2 winners. The girls made plenty of chances throughout the game and showed some excellent skill and determination. They had plenty of support from the dugout with a number of our U10s and U9s there to cheer them on to a thoroughly deserved victory. Well, done girls on a fantastic team performance and an excellent season.

GOWRAN GOWRAN ON THE MOVE KICKS OFF EASTER IN STYLE Gowran on the Move brought the village together in fine fashion, hosting their first Easter Fun Day at the new playground in Gowran and by all accounts, it was well worth the trip. Families turned out in force to enjoy a packed programme of activities, including an Easter egg hunt, a unique Easter Bunny chase, a raffle, and a host of classic games: Hang Tough, Beat the Buzzer, and Marble Madness

among them. There was no shortage of competitive spirit, and plenty of laughter to go with it.

The event also served as a timely showcase for the popular new facility, which continues to be a welcome addition to the heart of the village. Funds raised on the day will go towards the group’s ongoing development plans, the next phase of which is already in the pipeline.

Gowran on the Move were full of praise for those who came along: “It was fantastic to see so many turn out, and we’re incredibly grateful for everyone’s continued contributions.”With a first event like this under their belt, Gowran on the Move will be looking forward to what comes next.

SOUTH KILKENNY HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Society will host a lecture by Dr. Siobhán Doyle, Memories and Memorabilia, Telling GAA Stories through Objects, in the Parish Hall, Mullinavat at 8.00pm on Friday, 24th April. Admission is €5 for non-members, The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) is often evoked through objects: medals passed down from generation to generation, jerseys worn in All-Ireland finals, Cúl Camps backpacks and Michael Cusack’s blackthorn stick. This talk explores fascinating objects and their stories, which were uncovered by Siobhán Doyle when travelling around the country researching and writing her book A History of the GAA in 100 Objects. This talk highlights the challenges and the charms of telling stories through objects and how even the most ordinary, everyday objects can tell remarkable stories. Siobhán Doyle is Curator in the National Museum of Ireland and has a PhD in Museum Studies from the Technological University Dublin. Siobhán’s first book, A History of the GAA in 100 Objects, was published by Merrion Press in 2022. It was nominated for Sportsbook of the Year in the An Post Irish Book Awards and has since been developed in a public exhibition in the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks. Siobhán’s second book Irish Sport in 100 Objects will be published in the autumn.

Enhancements to existing Kilmacow Loop Walk within Complex to include the remediation of 100m of gravel trail and the formalisation of a 30m connectivity link, incorporating steps, between the lower field and upper field trails. The provision of age friendly seating at various locations along trails (4no.). Biodiversity planting at various locations around the existing trails with particular focus on embankment that was recently cleared of evergreen trees. The provision of trailhead signage, distance markers and interpretative signage on the rich local natural and cultural heritage of the area. 2no. Age Friendly and 2 no. Disabled dedicated parking bays within existing area park. Provision of bike parking stands within existing carpark. Provision of Re-fill water fountain near clubhouse (subject to access to water supply) The total grant award from the Department of Rural and Community Affairs is €200,000. There will be a match funding addition from Kilkenny County Council of €20,000.

KILMACOW GLAS The group is preparing for the upcoming Spring Clean on Sunday, 19th April. Its next meeting is in the Community Centre on 21 st April to continue to develop these initiatives.

JOHNSTOWN CHURCH NEWS Great crowds attended the Easter Ceremonies in the parishes of Johnstown, Urlingford and Galmoy.

Thanks to the P.P Fr. Eamon O’Gorman, readers, eucharistic ministers, altar servers, sacristans and anyone involved in the preparation of the various ceremonies. A new addition this year in which people were asked to visit their places of wordship and leave a flower, or flowers in memory of their loved ones who had passed away. The amount of flowers that were left, all colours and scents, was fantastic, as a result of which the altars in the churches looked splendid.

Easter dues for the priests are now due. If you wish to return your contribution to this year’s Lenten collection, please do so as soon as possible so that it can be forwarded to Trocaire.

MR. ANDY HENDERSON RIP Andy passed away unexpectedly at his home in Rathlogan during Easter. Predeceased by his parents Josephine (nee Fogarty), and Michael, he will be sadly missed by his heartbroken wife Sarah, daughters Emma and Catriona, Catriona’s partner Michael, brothers Jerry and his wife Lillian, Michael and his partner Karen, Michael’s son Gary, brothers in law, sisters in law, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and many friends. Requiem Mass was celebrated in St. Munchin’s Church, Gathabawn followed by burial in Johnstown Cemetery.

MILL FAMILY RESOURCE CENTRE The Mill Family Resource Centre continues to provide a wide range of supports, services, and activities for individuals and families within the local community. The Centre is a welcoming and inclusive space, offering opportunities for learning, wellbeing, and social connection for people of all ages.

One of the upcoming opportunities available is the Local Training Initiative (L.T.I.) Programme. This free L.T.I. course will be starting soon and includes Driving Theory and Driving Lessons, providing participants with valuable life skills that can support employment and independence. Anyone interested in applying is encouraged to call into the Centre or make contact directly for further details and application information.

The Centre also offers weekly Maths Grinds, which are currently taking place on-site. These grinds are suitable for students preparing for the Junior Certificate as well as 5th year students and provide additional support to help build confidence and understanding in mathematics. Parents and students seeking more information are invited to contact the Centre for times, availability, and fees.

A variety of essential community services are available through the Mill Family Resource Centre. These include the provision of Senior Alert Alarms, which offer peace of mind and safety for older members of the community, as well as clothes donations for those in need. The Centre also facilitates a Youth Club, community allotments, and the Cois Nore Advice Clinic, ensuring access to practical advice and supports close to home.

Counselling services are available for both adults and teenagers, offering a confidential and supportive environment. Counselling supports include bereavement counselling, addiction support, and general counselling, helping individuals navigate life’s challenges with professional guidance. In addition, Play Therapy is available for young people aged 4 years and over, providing a child-centred ap-

proach to emotional wellbeing and development.

The Centre’s Active Retirement Group meets every Thursday from 2pm to 4pm. This group offers a relaxed and social setting where members can enjoy activities, conversation, and companionship.

New members are always welcome, and the group continues to grow as a valued part of the Centre’s weekly programme.

The Youth Club has now returned and takes place every Wednesday from 5pm to 6.30pm. It is open to boys and girls aged 8 to 12 years, and new members are always encouraged to join. The club provides a safe, fun, and supervised space for young people to socialise, take part in activities, and build friendships. For further details, please contact Sue at the Centre.

Community gardening is also supported through the Centre’s allotments, with free beds available in the polytunnels for anyone interested in growing their own produce. The cost is just €15 per year, making it an affordable and rewarding activity.

CONAHY FOOTBALL The Conahy Shamrocks senior footballers bowed out for 2026 when they were second best to Thomastown in the JJ Kavanagh Senior Football Championship Quarter-Final in Jenkinstown on Sunday last. The visitors were the dominant side for the opening half and led by 2-6 to 0-4 at the half-time break. A third goal early in the second half was a further blow to Conahy, and Thomastown continued in the same vein after that. A late Conahy goal was a small consolation, but Thomastown had plenty to spare in the end, winning by 3-13 to 1-5.

HURLING The junior E hurlers took to the field for the first time in 2026 when they played host to O’Loughlin Gaels in Jenkinstown on Saturday last in the JJ Kavanagh Junior E league. The locals put in a decent performance in the opening half but were unfortunate to concede two goals that gave O’Loughlin’s a one point lead at the break. The city side had the better of the exchanges in the second half, and despite Conahy’s best efforts, were deserving winners by 4-9 to 2-8.

The junior B hurlers will also make their first outing of the year when they travel away to Piltown in the opening round of the JJ Kavanagh & Sons Junior B League on Friday evening at 7.30.

CAMOGIE Conahy Shamrocks intermediate camogie girls are back in action this Saturday evening at 6.30 when they face Dicksboro in the Intermediate Summer League in Palmerstown.

The under-16 girls also travel away to Kilmacow tomorrow evening (Thursday) at 6.30 in the Under-16 League.

John Power at Mullinavat GAA Grounds Tirlan of Kilkenny came out on top following a decisive final quarter in this highly competitive All Ireland Inter Firm Senior Hurling Semi- Final, under the lights at Mullinavat. There was plenty of Kilkenny club involvement on both sides, in this long-held competition, where Tirlan advanced to the final.

Five points from Mullinavat’s John Walsh (3 frees) and three scores from Mooncoin’s Paul Hennebry, were the main reason for a Suir Engineering fourpoint interval lead.Three first half points from centre forward Michael Kenny of Lisdowney and a Fintan Mullins goal had helped keep Tirlan in touch.

At the interval Suir Engineering led 0-13 to 1-6. Tirlan started the new half with an unanswered goal and a point to level matters, Michael Kenny was the goalscorer. Suir Engineering lost their midfield dominance in the second half, some fouls

A fine goal by Suir Engineering forward Ryan Murphy of Galmoy, after being set up by Aaron Dunne of Carrick Swans, restored the Waterford sides lead, leaving them three points clear 1-16 to 2-10, with the game entering the final ten minutes. However, a strong finish saw the Kilkenny side, where they outscore their opponents 1-4 to 0-2, helped by a fine individual goal from Sean Hunt of St Matins, when he ran onto a breaking ball, and finished to the net, saw them through to the final.

As already mentioned, Tirlan will now meet Waterford and Wexford ETB, their Leinster final conquerors in the final.

Waterford and Wexford ETB are completing their first season in the Inter-Firm GAA competition, and defeated Tirlán in a close encounter, 1-16 to 0-17, at Tinryland, in that game a few months back.

John Power at Mooncoin Mullinavat secured their place in the JJ Kavanagh Kilkenny Senior Football Championship semi-finals for a remarkable tenth consecutive year after an emphatic victory over Mooncoin in extremely challenging conditions at Mooncoin GAA Grounds on Friday night. Played under driving rain and swirling winds, the contest was effectively decided within the opening minutes, as Mullinavat delivered a blistering start that left the home side with a mountain to climb.

Facing into what were some of the most difficult playing conditions seen in recent seasons, the Vegas lads showed composure, sharpness, and attacking intent right from the throw-in. Inside the first eight minutes, they had surged into a commanding lead, registering 2-1 while keeping Mooncoin scoreless. This early dominance laid the foundation for what would ultimately be a comfortable passage into the last four.

Central to that explosive start was Michael Malone, who proved

clinical in front of goal despite the weather. He netted both of Mullinavat’s first-half goals, each coming from well-worked team moves that showcased slick, quick passing and excellent movement off the ball. Although multiple players were involved in the build-up to both goals, Malone’s finishing touch was decisive, demonstrating both composure and precision in front of the posts under immense pressure from the elements.

As Mullinavat continued to control proceedings, Oisín Knox extended their lead further with a well-taken point in the 27th minute, pushing them eight points clear at 2-2 to 0-0. At that stage, Mullinavat had completely dictated the tempo and territory, while Mooncoin struggled to gain any foothold in the game.

Mooncoin’s only score of the first half came shortly after Knox’s point, when Adam Croke converted a penalty to give the home side a lifeline. However, it proved to be a brief moment of relief in an otherwise one-sided half. Mullinavat responded by adding another point before the interval, ensuring they went into the break with a strong 2-3 to 1-0

advantage.

If Mooncoin harboured any hopes of mounting a second-half comeback, they were quickly extinguished within minutes of the restart. Mullinavat struck again almost immediately, with Oisín Knox finding the net to effectively put the game beyond reach. This was swiftly followed by a point from Ian Duggan, further extending the lead and underlining Mullinavat’s dominance.

Interestingly, the conditions shifted somewhat after half-time.

The relentless rain eased, and the wind, which had played a significant role in the opening period, appeared to change direction. While this made for slightly more manageable playing conditions, it did little to alter the course of the game. By that point, Mullinavat had already done the damage, and the contest as a competitive spectacle was effectively over.

To their credit, Mooncoin continued to battle throughout the second half, showing resilience and determination despite the scoreboard. Adam Croke remained their most potent attacking threat, working

tirelessly to create opportunities and drive his side forward.

However, the early deficit proved insurmountable, and Mullinavat’s defensive organisation ensured that Mooncoin were never able to significantly reduce the gap.

As the final whistle approached, Mullinavat maintained control and composure, eventually finishing with an eleven-point advantage. Their ability to adapt to the harsh conditions, combined with their clinical finishing and cohesive team play, set them apart on the night.

Overall, it was a highly professional performance from the Vegas lads, who once again demonstrated why they are consistent contenders in the championship. Reaching a tenth consecutive semi-final is a significant achievement and reflects both the strength and consistency within the squad.

Despite the difficult weather, both teams deserve credit for their efforts in what was a testing encounter. The players showed great commitment and determination throughout, producing a competitive and spirited display in conditions that were far from ideal for football.

Leinster GAA Senior Hurling Championship 2026 Round 1 Galway vs Kilkenny Pearse Stadium, Salthill Tomorrow, 4:30pm The 2026 Leinster GAA Senior Hurling Championship gets underway for our senior hurlers tomorrow as they make a second trip of the year to Salthill to take on the rising challenge of Galway.

Having registered their biggest defeat since 1954 on their last visit, manager Derek Lyng knows that his side will need to put in a much better showing tomorrow if they are to get their defence of the Bob O’Keefe Cup off to a winning start.

The performance in the league fixture six weeks ago was poor, and some seasoned pundits stated that they were shocked at what they saw from the Noresiders. Former Clare and Dublin manager Anthony Daly was one such respected figure that was surprised by what he saw from the Cats in Salthill.

“I’m a massive Kilkenny fan, I’ve always been an admirer of everything they bring, but I saw fellas giving up near the end of that game. “They wanted to get onto the bus and get out of there. I don’t associate that with Kilkenny. “I saw two or three instances near the end where lads didn’t go after it, didn’t chase it, and that would be worrying for me.”

Cats boss Derek Lyng was equally as damming when speaking to the assembled media in Pearse Stadium last month. The Emeralds clubman was certainly not mincing his words: “From the get-go we were flat, totally unacceptable from our side, not good enough, very disappointed.” “We’d no energy, were too passive, I’m responsible for that and it wasn’t good enough.”

Lots of straight-talking, honesty and hard work will have been the order of the day over the six intervening weeks, and we will see what has changed when the ball is thrown in at 4:30pm tomorrow.

I think it’s safe to say that the winning margin for whichever side comes out on top will be less than that recorded in March.

Kilkenny’s discipline will certainly need to be better than their last trip west, as young Aaron Niland finished his shift with 0-13, nine of which came from placed balls.

The scoring return for those in black and amber was never going to be enough to claim victory, just 0-17 for the travelling side, and supporters will hope that the return of captain and talisman, TJ Reid will inspire those around him to the levels required to successfully defend their provincial title for what would be a seventh consecutive Leinster crown and a 78th in total.

Shamrocks Ballyhale’s TJ Reid made his first appearance in the stripes in an entertaining encounter with All-Ireland champions, Tipperary where he rolled back the years, notching 1-8 to help claim a share of the

spoils in Thurles. It’s clear when watching a Kilkenny side that has TJ in it; teammates raise their game and play with a greater belief. As mentioned over the years; Reid provides a focal point for the Cats’ attack. His ability to pluck the ball from air is a huge asset to the team, which allows a more direct style of play, something that you associate with teams from the Marble City down the years.

Placed ball conversion is so crucial, especially in tight games, and TJ is still one of the best around. In his absence, Cian Kenny has stepped up and done a magnificent job when standing over the frees. The James Stephens man has been the shining light in a difficult and underwhelming season to date for the Noresiders. His work rate and

Another player that can blossom as a result of TJ being involved is his clubmate Eoin Cody. There have been glimpses in some games, but we need the pacy and talented stickman to come alive in every game and be the thorn in the sides of opponents like we know he can.

In defence, it will be interesting to see what back seven gets the nod tomorrow. Yes, that’s right, which seven. The performances of Aidan Tallis between the sticks have been very positive. The Lisdowney man has stood tall and shown that there is someone ready willing and most importantly very able to take over, when Eoin Murphy calls it a day.

No one is saying that the Glenmore netminder and former All-Star keeper is past his best, but what we can say is that in Tallis there is someone that is laying down

a marker and such genuine competition for places can only help drive Kilkenny to the levels that they need to reach to compete at the business end of seasons.

With the country’s best full back absent, the No.3 jersey appears up for grabs.

Young Ireland’s Mikey Carey appeared to be the player entrusted with this role, but a hamstring injury
