Kilkenny second-hand, three-bed up 9.5% from €298,500 The price of the average second-hand three-bed semi in Co. Kilkenny rose to €327,000 in 2025, up 9.5% from €298,500 at the end of 2024, according to a national survey by the Real Estate Alliance.

Across the county, the average time taken to sell a second-hand house this quarter was five weeks, the Q4 REA

Average House Price Index shows.

The survey shows that, across the county this quarter, 60% of purchasers were firsttime buyers, while a total of 10% of sales in the county were attributed to landlords leaving the market.

Additionally, agents across the county reported that BER

ratings affected prices, with A-rated properties commanding 15% price increases in comparison to comparable Crated properties.

The REA Average House Price Index concentrates on the sale price of Ireland’s typical stock home, the three-bed semi, giving an accurate picture of the second-hand prop-

erty market in towns and cities countrywide.

A recent rise in landlords exiting the housing market is set to increase sharply in the first months of 2026, according to agents.

The impending nationwide rent pressure zone at the end of February has seen a 38% annual increase in landlord sales

in many areas now included in the legislation.

The actual selling price of a three-bed, semi-detached house across the country rose by 1.6% in the past three months to €359,417.

This represents an 8.7% overall annual rise — a slowing from the 10.3% increase registered six months ago.

Reaction to the Mercosur deal

Most of us want to die at home A new national survey for SymPhysis Medical suggests Ireland is ready for a shift towards home-based end-of-life care, with most adults saying they would prefer palliative care at home if it were possible. The findings land against a backdrop of rising demand for end-of-life supports and continuing pressure on services.

The survey of 861 adults,

carried out by research firm Opinions for SymPhysis Medical, found that 70% of respondents would prefer palliative care at home rather than in hospital, hospice, a nursing home, or another care setting.

The sample was nationally representative by age, gender, and region, with a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points on the headline figures.

Actual selling prices in Dublin city rose by 1.5% in the last three months, with the average three-bed semi in the capital’s postcode areas now selling at €586,000, an 8.1% annual rise.

Selling prices in Ireland’s major cities outside Dublin rose by 1.3% to an average of €373,750 — a 7.4% annual increase.

While preferences are clear, national data show that death still most commonly occurs in hospital for adults over 35.

Central Statistics Office figures for 2023 show general and orthopaedic hospitals were the most common place of death among those aged over 35, with 14,663 deaths recorded in that setting. The Irish Hospice Foundation has also warned that end-of-life services are

overstretched, with demand expected to rise further.

The SymPhysis poll also indicates a willingness to use technology to make care at home more feasible. Most respondents said they would be open to digital supports such as remote monitoring, secure messaging, and video calls if it helped them stay at home longer while receiving palliative care. Comfort with digital

tools was strongest among younger adults and older age groups, with a dip in the middle years.

Tim Jones, CEO of SymPhysis Medical, said: “The challenge is that services and infrastructure are still largely built around hospital-based care. If we do not modernise how care is delivered, the gap between preference and reality will widen as demand rises.”

Sinn Féin MEP Kathleen Funchion has condemned the European Council’s decision to approve the Mercosur trade deal, warning that it is “bad for Irish farmers, the environment, and public health”.

MEP Funchion also criticised the manner in which the European Commission forced the deal through, saying it “threatens the rights of national parliaments”.

Speaking from Kilkenny, MEP Funchion said: “I am disappointed that the deal has passed through the European Council, especially in the manner in which it has been done — without a meeting or debate among trade ministers this week.”

However, Chambers Ireland and ICC Ireland welcomed the passing of the Mercosur trade agreement, describing it as a great opportunity for the Irish economy and a welcome boost for free, open trade which has been so instrumental in Ireland’s economic success.

The decision represented a significant milestone in the process, with the agreement now progressing to the European Parliament for consideration.

News Embrace Farm, Ireland’s only support network for farm families, has announced the third annual Wear Our Wellies (WOW) Day will take place on Friday, February 6.

The charitable organisation is encouraging Kilkenny schools, businesses, groups, and individuals to take part in the unique fundraiser by wearing their wellies wherever they are on the day and donating to Embrace Farm, helping to raise awareness and vital funds.

Last year, more than €6,000 was raised to help provide emotional and practical supports for Irish farm families impacted by serious injury and sudden death.

Speaking about the fundraiser, Embrace Farm co-founder Norma Rohan said: “It was incredibly heartwarming to see people rallying last year for another incredibly successful WOW Day. This unique fundraiser lets us connect with both farming and non-farming communities, allowing us to highlight the impact a serious injury or sudden death has on a farming family and the broader farming community.

McGuinness welcomes major investment in Special Education with new classes for Carlow and Kilkenny

Leas Ceann Comhairle and Fianna Fáil TD for Carlow– Kilkenny, John McGuinness, has today warmly welcomed the announcement of nine new special classes for the Carlow–Kilkenny constituency, including six new special classes in County Kilkenny and three in County Carlow.

The announcement was made today by the Fianna Fáil Minister for Special Education, Michael Moynihan, as part of the first tranche of new special classes allocated nationwide, which will see a record number of special classes sanctioned to open for the 2026/2027 school year.

Today’s announcement confirms that 168 new special classes have been assigned to 159 schools across the country, including

the nine for Carlow and Kilkenny. This represents a significant step forward in ensuring that children with additional educational needs can access appropriate supports within their own communities.

Welcoming the announcement, Deputy McGuinness said: “I very much welcome today’s announcement by Minister Michael Moynihan, which will deliver muchneeded special classes for children and families across Carlow and Kilkenny.

These additional classes will make a real and positive difference by ensuring that more children can access the supports they need in local schools.”

“The allocation of six new special classes in Kilkenny and three in Carlow reflects the growing demand for special education provision in our area and demonstrates the Government’s commitment to meeting that need in a planned and responsive way.”

Deputy McGuinness added that today’s announcement forms part of a wider national programme, with more special classes to be sanctioned over the coming weeks as part of this year’s planning process.

Looking ahead to 2026, Deputy McGuinness highlighted the scale of the Government’s investment in special education: “In 2026, over €3 billion will be spent supporting students with additional needs, including the recruitment of more than 860 additional special education teachers and over 1,700 additional special needs assistants. This level of investment underlines a clear commitment to inclusion and to supporting children, families and schools.”

Deputy McGuinness concluded by thanking Minister Moynihan and the Department of Education for their continued engagement with schools and families across Carlow and Kilkenny.

Birds do it, bees do it… even 60 primates do it Some 60 primate species, including baboons, chimpanzees, and vervet monkeys, express homosexuality, according to a new study that sheds further light on the evolutionary origin of samesex intimacy.

The findings, reported by The Independent in London, add weight to the argument that homosexuality doesn’t defy nature and evolution.

Although homosexuality is

documented in many animal species, the evolutionary and environmental factors behind it remain unclear.

Studies indicate that ecological factors, the life history of the individual, and the social structure of a population play a role in its expression.

But a collective analysis of behaviour across multiple species and their shared drivers is limited so far.

The new study analysed data from 491 non-human primates and found same-sex intimacy in 59, with evidence of repeat occurrence of the behaviour in 23.

The study defined same-sex intimacy as any sexual behaviour directed towards an individual of the same sex, regardless of whether reproduction was possible.

“It includes all behaviour where the intent is seen to be

clearly sexual,” study author Chloe Coxshall, who studies homosexuality in rhesus macaques, said.

The researchers say samesex intimacy is more common in species living in harsh or dry environments with limited food, like Barbary macaques, as well as those in areas with high predation risk, like vervet monkeys.

Homosexual behaviour is also more common in species

with significant differences in size or appearance between the sexes, like mountain gorillas; species that live long, like chimpanzees; and those with complex social systems and hierarchies, like baboons.

“What we find when we look at species overall is that it is more common in animals that have complex societies, like a strong hierarchy, and complex mating systems

where they don’t mate in pairs but will have multiple partners,” Ms Coxshall, who is a PhD candidate at Imperial College London, said.

“So same-sex intimacy seems to be facilitating competitive scenarios, helping keep group harmony in stressful situations, like when there are many predators around, and making sure the group communicates well together.”

Fall in gas costs may see energy bills cut

Consumers could be in line for a cut in energy prices this year due to a fall in wholesale gas costs.

Energy experts said a decrease in wholesale costs, strong supplies of liquefied natural gas, and a relatively mild winter across Europe meant there would be scope for lower domestic electricity and gas prices.

A recent report revealed that Irish households pay around €360 more a year for electricity than the average across the EU. Daragh Cassidy, of price comparison site Bonkers.ie, said there had been a slow but steady fall in the wholesale price of gas over the past few months. The latest figures show wholesale gas prices are 37% lower than a year ago.

Gas is used to generate up to half of the State’s electricity.

“The fall is largely a result of strong supplies of LNG [liquefied natural gas] into Europe, as well as increased optimism— perhaps misplaced—around the prospect of some type of peace deal in Ukraine. A relatively mild winter up until Christmas has also helped,” Mr Cassidy said.

But he said any changes in wholesale markets would always take time to translate into lower energy bills. Wholesale gas prices are just one element of producing electricity and gas for households and businesses.

Network fees, supplier margins,

and government charges such as VAT and the carbon tax also play a big role in the prices households pay.

“I’m hopeful that if wholesale prices remain close to their current levels, it should allow suppliers to drop their gas prices a bit over the coming few months,” Mr Cassidy said.

Wholesale prices are still about 60–70% above the level they were at before the war in Ukraine.

Mr Cassidy said prices were not going to return close to the levels they were at before the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“But Irish households are still paying around double the price for gas compared to what they were a few years back. So I think some type of relief can be expected soon,” he said.

Dr Paul Deane, a lecturer on energy at University College Cork, said wholesale gas prices were stable at the moment. This means there is a prospect of small cuts in prices. At the very least, prices may not rise this year.

He said suppliers looked at wholesale prices on a rolling 12- to 18-month basis, not just where they are compared with this time last year.

“What is more likely is that prices will remain the same this year, but there is potential for a modest reduction,” Dr Deane said.

Irish Rural Link takes reins at AgriKids Irish Rural Link (IRL) – the national network representing the interests of rural communities – has announced its acquisition of the children’s farm safety educational platform, AgriKids.

The merger will see AgriKids sit alongside an array of national and European development projects, all housed within IRL, such as CAP Network Ireland, Meals on Wheels, and The Breeding Waders EIP.

The structure will enhance AgriKids’ ability to grow its resources in line with the demand it has amassed since its foundation in 2015.

Irish Rural Link CEO Seamus Boland said: “The integration is a natural step in our continued commitment to farm safety and rural education. By combining AgriKids’ innovative, child-focused approach with IRL’s experience in community development and advocacy.”

What a lotta, lotta, lotta lottery winners!

Last year, 2025, was a fantastic year of wins right across the country, headlined by the largest, record-breaking prize ever won in Ireland – an incredible €250 million EuroMillions jackpot. With two EuroMillions jackpots, nine Lotto jackpots, and seven Daily Million top prizes, players nationwide joined the list of National Lottery millionaires throughout the year.

Wait, Mr Postman, is there a letter for me?

When I was a young journalist in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe in the late ’70s, I would regularly write home to my parents of my adventures in a country at war — and that I was okay. They were more like missives: a dozen foolscap pages every other week, typed on my proudly owned, sturdy Remington black-and-yellow portable typewriter. My stock in trade.

My mother would write back. Just one page, half of which said: ‘Rushing to catch the post, will write with more news soon…’ She never did, of course. My father, on the other hand, was a prolific writer of letters — long and detailed, and in the finest calligraphy I had ever seen. My own grown son and daughter have the same purposeful penmanship.

My father started his work as a civil servant at 16, first as a motorbike dispatcher

of telegrams, which in those days were more often than not the short-worded, wired document that someone had died. This bearer of such sad news then moved on to be a sorter of letters on the Post & Telegraphs mail trains — down day, up night, as it were. I’ve often wondered if my father, in sorting through the letters and reading the address of the recipient and most likely the sender, built in his vivid imagination the stories of what the letters might hold: the one from the emigrant son away in Boston; the sister who was a nun and helping the black babies in Africa; the daughter who was coming home, for the first time in years, and with the never-beforeseen grandchildren. Perhaps all that gave my father his love for letters and what stories they might tell.

It seems in this digital age we have fallen out of love

with the written letter.

In Denmark, it is the end of an era which has endured for centuries, dating back to King Christian IV’s 1624 decree to create one of Europe’s first modern post offices. Ten days ago, with minimal fanfare, Denmark’s national post office ceased the delivery of letters, and its famous red post boxes will soon vanish from the streets.

PostNord, the Danish postal service, says it took the momentous decision to stop delivering letters after usage fell by 90 per cent in the past 25 years. The demise of the service was a “difficult” moment, but there was scarcely any demand left for posting letters and the company needed to focus its efforts on parcels.

Ireland may not be far off the Danes’ move — if not tomorrow, then someday soon. The sending of letters has fallen dramatically in

the last 10 years, by about seven to 10% annually, according to An Post. Fewer write letters these days; we text, we leave voicemails, we do WhatsApp video. It’s far more convenient and instantaneous than putting pen

to paper and then having to go and get a stamp, price up next month, at the post office — the few that remain, that is and where once the post office was a focal place for rural communities.

Similarly, suppliers of goods and services don’t send you a bill by letter anymore — they email you.

At least, one could argue we are saving the trees.

However, there is more to letter writing than the felling of trees. There is a personal and emotional value attached to a letter. Unlike fleeting digital messages on Instagram, a physical letter is a permanent, tangible object that can be held and reread years later. The act of taking the time to handwrite and post a letter shows a deep level of care and effort, which can make the recipient feel loved and valued.

Also, old letters can preserve personal stories, family

history, and the unique voice and personality of the writer long after they are gone.

When my parents died 10 weeks apart in the Millennium year and we cleared out the house to sell it, I found, stored away in a small cardboard box at the back of the wardrobe, a telegram addressed to my father, who was down day, up night on the sorting mail train the day I was born. The faded slip of paper simply said: ‘Baby son. Mother doing well.’

Almost 50 years on, here was part of the unique personality — the voice, almost — of my parents, from an age where once the telegram was brief but urgent and the long, handwritten letter a mark of how the recipient was valued and loved.

Today, I still have that telegram… and some of those Africa letters my father had kept.

Women lag in retirement plans A nationwide survey by iReach on behalf of the insurance firm Royal London Ireland has found that half of men in Ireland expect to retire before the State pension age of 66, compared with just 30% of women.

get to retire, with one in five believing they will have to work until the age of 70 to be able to afford retirement. For men, it was 16%.

Overall, the survey found most people believe retiring early remains out of reach, with six in 10 saying quitting before the State pension age

of 66 did not feel financially realistic.

About half of those questioned expect to retire at 65 or 66, while nearly one in five workers believe they will not be able to afford to retire until they reach 70.

Despite the findings, there are signs of increased con-

fidence among a small number, with 6% of workers saying they aim to retire by age 55, which is double the figure recorded a year ago.

The increase is most noticeable among those aged 45 to 54, where more than one in 10 now believe retirement at 55 could be achievable.

Attitudes towards the idea of stopping work for good are changing, with 15% of women saying they never want to fully retire, compared with 10% of men.

A previous study from the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) found the pension income of retired women in Ireland is about 35% lower than for men, a gap that continues to shape expectations about when retirement is financially possible.

Thousands of students arrived at the RDS, Dublin, last week for the 2026 Stripe Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition (YSTE), one of the world’s leading student science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) events.

This year’s exhibition was the first under new title sponsor Stripe, the programmable financial services company dualheadquartered in Dublin and San Francisco. A total of 550 student projects — selected from 1,974 entries — went on display across five categories: Technology; Biological and Ecological Sciences; Social and Behavioural Sciences; Chemical, Physical, and Mathematical Sciences; and Health and Wellbeing.

There were more than 200 prize winners – including the overall winner who will take home €7,500 in prize money and represent Ireland in the EU Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS).

MEP welcomes child law move Sinn Féin MEP for Ireland South Kathleen Funchion has welcomed confirmation that a new law reporting project, modelled on the Child Law Project, will once again build confidence and bring transparency to family judicial proceedings.

Speaking from Kilkenny, MEP Funchion said: “I am thrilled Dr Carol Coulter is once again leading a team to monitor and report on Family Court proceedings.

“Re-establishing reporting and monitoring of our child care court proceedings is crucial to developing policy and legislation that reflects the lived experiences of our most vulnerable children and their families,” she said.

“Since the end of 2023, there has been no comprehensive monitoring and/or reporting on private family law proceedings.This needless gap in data

collection suggests the Government isn’t serious about making the necessary reforms needed to ensure children do not disappear within our family court system.

“Dr Coulter’s final report, under the protection of the Child Law Project, coupled with significant criticism from a number of District Court judges, was a damning indictment of the Government’s over-reliance on unregulated residential care.

“This is a trend which unfortunately has not changed.

“HIQA’s recent annual report alarmingly showed a number of children with complex needs continue to be housed in unregulated special emergency accommodation.

“Clearly, this is completely unacceptable and further demonstrates a lack of focus from Government on the needs of children,” she said.

New Year tonics that don’t cost a cent We live in uncertain times.

Imagine if President Trump gave Ireland the same treatment he applied to Venezuela — sending in planes, helicopters, and agents to whisk Micheál Martin and Simon Harris away in their PJs to stand trial for activities which are not in America’s interest, like encouraging US firms to base here.

There are many things to cause concern in this age of uncertainty over which we have no control. Better by far to concentrate on the things we can influence that will make a difference to our lives. And there are some that needn’t cost a cent, will boost health, and that feelgood factor. Where to start?

The way you use your brain power can make an amazing difference to well-being.

Having a positive attitude has a transformative effect.

It’s not so much what actually happens in life as the

way that you perceive it that counts. It has been found that being optimistic has a protective effect against illness; it also makes problem-solving easier and you will have, and be, more fun.

According to a US study of nuns in the Sisters of Notre Dame congregation, those with a glass-half-full take on life lived, on average, over seven years longer than those with negative attitudes. When you catch yourself taking a gloomy view, begin by practising with smaller snags, thinking about them differently and reframing the situation.

Like optimism — the realistic kind — people power is a tonic. It reduces stress and boosts mood; its opposite, isolation, can be as bad for you as smoking.

So much time is spent on screens or texting these days that honest-to-goodness face-to-face social contact

is lost. Making time to meet friends or joining in socially occasionally can have an immediate benefit — combining this with a walk with a friend in calming nature is even better.

Social relationships are one thing, but what about your relationship with yourself? Funny thing about our culture: we focus on things that we get wrong. This shows up in self-talk; how often do you tell yourself you made a stupid mistake (it was a learning experience!), or you had a senior moment (everyone forgets things)?

If anyone else told you that you were stupid or old, you would soon put them right, so no need to put yourself down.

Taking on a challenge and succeeding is another boost.

Putting off tasks that you don’t want to do actually uses up more energy than getting them done. Avoid-

ing minor difficulties — in my case, usually to do with technology — is another energy-consuming niggle.

Just give it a try, succeed

and you’ll feel better; if you don’t, it will work out next time. It doesn’t have to be something big: a new recipe, something that needs fixing, or even having a sort-out, a drawer or a cupboard at a time, will do the trick.

US psychologist Martin Seligman, known as the Father of Positive Psychology, defines meaningful happiness as one where we find a fulfilling sense of purpose by employing our unique strengths for a purpose greater than ourselves. It’s a theory which isn’t just about individualistic pursuit of happiness, but about using your gifts to benefit others, where happiness is a by-product of the things that you do. Investing what you do with meaning is

a helpful tonic.

The start of a new year is a favourite time for making resolutions, but many are negative and non-specific.

Going on a diet is typical; the moment you tell yourself you are giving up sweets or bread, these will occupy your mind like the proverbial elephant in the room. I prefer a positive approach: say, the appeal of eating a rainbow, with lots of colourful fruit and vegetables, olive oil, and fish, as in a Mediterranean diet. If you need a plan to lose two inches round your waist before a holiday, writing down the plan with steps makes it much more likely to succeed.

News After more than 25 years of negotiations, the European Commission has officially signed off on the free trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur countries of South America. Despite voting against it, Ireland and France, among others, were unable to prevent its adoption during a final meeting of European diplomats on Friday, January 9.

The agreement with Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia is being presented by Brussels as a major economic and geopolitical tool for the EU. Nevertheless, it faces particularly broad opposition in Ireland, where it has crystallised concerns among the agricultural sector, environmentalists, and the entire political class.

What exactly does this trade agreement contain?

Why is it facing such strong rejection among some EU countries? And could Ireland’s stance still affect its implementation? Here are five key points to understand the situation.

What is the agreement about?

This is a free trade treaty that has been under negotiation for more than a quarter of a century between the EU and the Mercado Común del Sur, or Mercosur (“Southern Common Market”), a South American trade bloc that includes Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia (though the latter joined the group late and is not participating in the agreement).

The treaty contains several measures designed to facilitate trade between the two regions: the gradual elimination of almost all tariffs, legal protection against the imitation of 344 European products (such as Roquefort, Comté, or Champagne), and the creation of new import quotas in Europe, notably for South American beef (99,000 metric tonnes a year).

The EU hopes to boost exports of European goods — cars, clothing, wines — which currently face high tariffs in Mercosur countries.

With 780 million consumers and between €40 billion and €45 billion in annual imports and exports, it could become the largest trade agreement ever signed by the EU, and a way for the bloc to diversify its markets amid ongoing tensions with the United States and China.

Although the agreement was finalised on June 28, 2019, it was never signed because of hesitations from several countries on both sides of the Atlantic, including Ireland.

Why is it contested?

In some countries, the EU– Mercosur agreement faces near-universal opposition from all political forces, as well as from the main agricultural unions. The criticism centres on the risk of

IRISH FARMERS CALL FOR “IREXIT”

Thousands of Irish farmers are protesting against the EU’s trade deal with the South American bloc Mercosur, a day after EU states approved the treaty despite opposition from Ireland and France.

Tractors streamed onto the roads of Athlone, in central Ireland, for the demonstration, displaying signs bearing the slogan “Stop EU–Mercosur” and the EU flag emblazoned with the words “sell out”.

The protests followed similar actions in Poland, France, and Belgium as the EU gave the green light to the trade deal, which has been welcomed by business groups but heavily criticised by European farmers.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin expressed concern that Mercosur beef may not be produced to the EU’s strict environmental standards, saying people had to be confident that standards and obligations set for Irish farmers would not be undermined by imports with less stringent regulations.

At the protest last weekend, farmers carried signs calling for an “Irexit” and accusing the Latin American bloc’s beef exports of not following the same standards.

The Mercosur deal will also need to be agreed by a majority of MEPs in the European Parliament in the coming months, where voting coalitions have become more volatile and unpredictable.

The agreement is widely opposed by Irish farmers over fears it will result in an influx of an extra 99,000 tonnes of cheap beef from South America, disrupting Irish agriculture. The Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA), Ireland’s main farmers’ lobby group, called the result very disappointing and said it would renew focus on securing a majority against the deal in the European Parliament.

“We expect Irish MEPs to stand behind the farming community and reject the Mercosur deal,” said the IFA president, Francie Gorman, in a statement.

Now that it’s been voted on, is the deal done?

Despite their efforts, those countries against the deal failed to convince enough countries to form a blocking minority during a Brussels meeting of EU ambassadors on January 9. As a result, the agreement was officially approved by a written vote of the 27 member states by the end of the day.

While nothing prevented European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen from flying to Paraguay on Monday to sign the agreement on behalf of the EU, the process is not yet complete. “The outcome is not set in stone,” regardless

of the result of the January 9 vote, insisted Jean-Noël Barrot, the French Foreign Minister, in an interview with the radio station France Inter.

Indeed, for the agreement to be ratified, it must still be approved by the European Parliament, where a majority is not guaranteed. The agreement could, however, enter into effect before that vote, under a “provisional application” mechanism, as explained by the media network Euractiv — with the risk that it could later be scrapped if MEPs reject it.

Another obstacle could further complicate the agreement’s future: a lawsuit before the European Court of Justice challenging the legality of the ratification procedure chosen by the European Commission, which some see as a way to bypass opposition from certain national parliaments. The European Parliament could initiate such a review, potentially delaying the process for several months — or even derailing it, should the court rule against it.

Can opposition countries refuse to apply this treaty?

Despite their “No” vote, opposition countries cannot, on their own, block its adoption or refuse to implement it. Trade policy falls under the exclusive authority of the EU. The European Commission negotiates on behalf of the 27 member states, based on a mandate granted in 1999 by the member states, including Ireland.

Obituary

Breda Walsh RIP There was a sense of unbelief in Bennettsbridge village when the sad news of the death of Breda Walsh, Main Street broke on 22nd December. Her unexpected death at her home so close to Christmas was heard of with regret in the entire community and beyond.

Breda was a native of Kilmacar, Conahy and was one of seven children born to Michael and Bridget Healy. She was well known in the bar and grocery trade having started her working life in Maudlin Stores, Conahy. From there she served her time in Loughlin’s, Gowran and later took over the popular Pike Bar on the Dublin Road. Her services were also welcomed in the Corner House.

In 1963 the family moved to Main Street Bennettsbridge. She was widowed in 1983 when her husband Jim sadly passed away. Breda was left with the care of a family of eight, a task which she carried out admirably.

She was a very popular woman in the parish and her sympathetic and generous nature made her a favourite with young and old. The on-line condolence section bore testimony to this and many messages included individual stories of people who experienced at first hand her kindness and listening ear. Above all she was a homemaker and lived for her family.

She had reached the great age of 90 years, and her life was lived to the full.

The achievements of her children, her grandchildren and great grandchildren were very important to her.

In the era before mobile phones, the phone box in the street just outside Breda’s house was an important method of communication. There was always some member of the Walsh family to answer it and pass on a message.

Some friends will also remember Breda and the happy times enjoyed during seasonal work in Breen’s apple field and the hops in Mosse’s. She had a great interest in sport particularly GAA and soccer, with Man Utd being her favourite club.

She was a loyal supporter of all parish activities.

Known to most as Mrs Walsh of the Street, Bennettsbridge has lost one of its oldest parishioners and the Street will be all the poorer for her passing.

Breda lay in repose in the home of her daughter, Margaret and a steady stream of extended family, neighbours and friends

came to pay their final respects. It was a source of comfort to the family as memories were shared over the hours. Vigil prayers were recited by Fr Willie Purcell.

The remains were removed and a guard of honour comprising East End United, neighbours and friends escorted Breda on her final journey to St Bennett’s Church.

It was one of the biggest funerals seen in Bennettsbridge for some time and a fitting tribute for an exceptional woman. The remains were received by Fr Willie Purcell and Fr Pat Dalton Requiem Mass was concelebrated by Fr. Willie Purcell, Fr. Pat Dalton, Fr. Richard Delahunty, Fr. Derek Miskella, Br. Dermot (Redemptorist Order, Limerick). Fr. Purcell welcomed everybody to the celebration of Breda’s life, a life where her religion played an important part.

He welcomed the priests from the Redemptorist Order. He offered sympathy to her family on their loss especially at Christmas time.

The lessons were read

by Bridget Coady(niece) and Ellen Healy(niece).

Prayers of the Faithful were recited by Claire, Zoe, Megan, Danielle and Laura(Granddaughter).

The Offertory gifts with narration by Ellen(daughter) reflected Breda’s many interests in life. Granddaughter Amy carried a photo of Breda, daughter Margaret, Prayer book, daughter Bridget, walking stick, daughterin-law Trisha, Kilkenny hurl, daughter in-law Catherine, deck of cards, daughter Anne family photo, daughter-in-law Ber, Tin of sweets, daughterin-law Martina, Lighted candle, granddaughter Sarah, Manchester United Jersey. The Bread and Wine were presented by Katie(granddaughter) and Breda Culleton(niece).

Music throughout the ceremony was byTom Bolger. Breda’s granddaughter, Julie spoke on behalf of the family and the following is an excerpt taken from her words, “Nanny had 8 children, 20 grandchildren, and 19

great-grandchildren, and somehow, she made every single one of us feel special.

We are all so blessed to have had her in our lives, and we all carry cherished childhood memories of time spent with her. To us, she truly was the best in the world. Nanny was kind, gentle, loving, and completely selfless. She was the person we could tell our secrets to, knowing they were safe with her forever. She listened without judgment and loved without conditions. It is something so special that her 19 greatgrandchildren got to know her too. She adored them.

There were always hugs and kisses waiting, and of course, something nice. If you tried to stop her from giving them a biscuit or a piece of chocolate, you were definitely in trouble. That was Nanny, love, warmth, and a little bit of sweetness, always shared. She had a smile for everyone, a beautiful smile. Nanny lived in the middle of our village, and everyone knew her. But really, everyone knew her because she made time for people. She loved to stop

and chat, and genuinely enjoyed it. Losing Nanny on the 22nd of December has made this time of year incredibly hard for all of us.

Christmas will never feel quite the same. Usually, Christmas Day meant all of us gathering at Nanny’s.

She would lay out all her gifts and show us every single one, who they were from and she never forgot anyone. This year, we still gathered at Nanny’s. We shared stories, tears, and laughter, just like always.

But there was a feeling that something was missing. Her chair by the fire was empty, and it felt like a part of our lives was missing with it.

Nanny, you might not be there in your chair anymore, but your love, your laughter, and your kindness will stay with us always”.

Julia went on to thank the oncology team in Waterford and Kilkenny, the radiation department in Whitfield hospital and Breda’s oncologist Dr. Miriam O’ Connor, Father Willie Purcell for a beautiful funeral service, Paddy and Bridget Coady for their advice, kindness,

and support over the past few days and especially for today. Tom Bolger for the beautiful music and singing. To all who helped us in any way, through words, gestures, prayers, or simply being there for us. It has meant a lot. Julie thanked in a special way, the paramedics, the Gardaí, and Fr Duggan, who came to Nanny on the night she passed away. They showed such kindness, compassion, and respect, and helped us through a very difficult time. We will always be very grateful for that.

Granddaughter Maria read a beautiful poem that she wrote for her Nanny on the occasion of her 90th birthday last year. The family held a surprise party for her in Langton’s and Maria read it out to her at that.

Fr Purcell thanked his fellow priests and all who participated in the mass.

The funeral left the church to the music of “Going Home”, sung by Tom Bolger. Family, friends and neighbours accompanied the cortege on the final journey to St Bennett’s Cemetery. Following prayers at the graveside, Breda’s granddaughter, Jessie played guitar and sang “Bright Blue Rose” and all joined in the singing.

After the burial the Community Hall provided the ideal venue for family, friends and neighbours to congregate to share memories of an exceptional mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and neighbour.

Breda was predeceased by her husband Jim, brothers Jim, Mikey and Bro. Nicholas, sisters, Julia, Anna, Cathy and Mary, granddaughter Amy, sister-in-law Nellie, and brother-in-law Paddy. She is survived by her sons Liam, Michael, Stephen and Jimmy, and daughters Ellen (Lawlor), Bridget (Dooley), Margaret (Hynes) and Anne (Foley), mother-in-law to Martina, Catherine, Ber, Trisha, Tony, Tom and Davy.

A loving grandmother to Mark, Maria, Julie, Claire, Katie, Lisa, Laura, Sarah, Nicola, Danielle, Hannah, Dillon, Zoe, John, Jessie, David, Emily, Amy, Megan and Lucy. Proud greatgrandmother to her 19 great-grandchildren. She is also mourned by her nieces, nephews and extended family.

Breda was a cherished neighbour and friend and will be sadly missed by everyone fortunate enough to have known her.

Rest in Peace Breda.

Christmas bills looming large in January As we usher in 2026, reflecting on the 2025 festive season reveals a sobering reality.

If your shopping trolley felt heavier on the wallet last Christmas, the figures confirm it. The average Irish household spent roughly €700 more on celebrations in 2025 than five years earlier in 2020. This was not isolated to a few items; it spanned every festive category, from the turkey to fuel for family trips.

Before Christmas 2025, the buildup was intense. Families budgeted ahead, yet escalating prices still stretched plans. Food and drink costs rose €220 from 2020, with turkeys up 31% to €32.75 for a 5kg bird and fresh produce climbing 35%. Gifts added €180 more, as toys and clothing increased between 22 and 24%. Energy bills surged by €125, petrol is 40% higher.

Tavel and entertainment jumped €95 and dining out increased up to €45. What cost €1,800 in 2020 hit €2,500 in 2025.

What fuelled this? Inflation had built steadily since 2020, with food peaking at 12.4% year-on-year in early 2023 before easing. As usual prices never returned to previous levels. Global supply chains,

Brexit hurdles, and energy swings pushed electricity from 20 cents to 36 cents per kWh. Retailers grappled with wage rises and overheads, passing on some of the costs while margins shrank. A

The fight against Mercosur is far from over

Sinn Féin TD Natasha Newsome Drennan was speaking following the national rally against the Mercosur Trade Deal in Athlone on Saturday and in advance of the Sinn Féin Dáil motion that calls on government to support a legal challenge to the deal by members of the EU parliament, to mandate all Irish MEPs to vote against the deal, and for the government to engage directly with MEPs across the EU to urge them to reject the deal in the European Parliament.

Deputy Newsome Drennan said: ‘’On Saturday in Athlone we saw a glimpse of the strength of rural Ireland.

Where thousands upon thousands travelled from the four corners of the Island to say no to Mercosur. The decision of the EU Council to approve the Mercosur trade agreement show how little they care for Irish Agriculture, the environment and public health. ‘’Last week we saw the Irish Food Authority issue a recall for Brazilian beef on sale in

Ireland due to the present of banned drugs that have links to cancer. But this recall was pointless as the production in question were on sale last October and had already been well consumed. ‘’The Irish Food Authority testing cannot effectively test the Brazilian beef currently on sale in here, if Mercosur is pass, we will be completely overwhelmed. ‘’This EU Council’s decision undermines food safety standards in the EU and puts EU consumers' health at risk.

“While the Irish government voted against the deal, they had to be dragged kicking and screaming to this position by the combined opposition, the farm organisations and some of their own backbench TDs. “But the public will see right through Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael’s manoeuvring.

“It was at the 11th hour that they cynically announced, in an act of political cowardice, that they would vote against Mercosur - only when they were safe in the knowledge that the vote would pass because of Italy’s decision to support it.

“We in Sinn Fein had been calling on this government for months to state their position on Mercosur and for years we have been calling on successive Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil governments to take a leadership role in opposition to the deal.

“Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil repeatedly failed to stand up and be counted, and steadfastly refused to engage seriously with like-minded EU member states in forming a blocking minority.

“While the EU Council vote is disappointing and should be condemned, the campaign to put an end to this disastrous deal is not over.

“There is still a legal challenge to the deal by members of the EU parliament, including Sinn Fein’s MEPS, and there will be a vote in the EU parliament on the deal.

The motion would also mandate all their party MEPs to vote against the deal, and for the government to engage directly with MEPs across the EU to urge them to reject the deal in the EU parliament.

Dublin toy shop owner said anonymously: “We absorbed what we could, but many small shops didn’t make it through.”

Pre-Christmas, some households got creative.

Shoppers started in September, buying in and gaining 15-20% in savings. Secret Santa limited adult gifts to €30-€50, cutting bills from €400. Families chose experiences like pantomime tickets over pricier goods, or homemade goods to reduce food expenses. Yet, economist Austin Hughes warned nearly one in five could not afford it. Over half had less cash than in 2024, with 9% borrowing, up from 7% two years prior and 42% using credit, including buy-now-pay-later options that glossed over costs in the short term.

Christmas bills are looming large in January. One in five borrowed, with 20% needing three months to repay.

Credit cards charged from 13-26% interest if uncleared.

For example, a €1,000 spend at minimum repayments could drag on for eight years.

Miss a repayment with a Buy-now-pay-later plan and you will incur fees, escalating to collections. Charities

like Barnardos reported families skipping heating bills for kids’ gifts, risking arrears, with 187,000 customers already 90+ days late on electricity pre the holidays.

This pre-post-split exposed broader strains. Beforehand, joy turning to worry for middle-income homes, where €2,500 ate 8.3% of the average income. Afterwards, poverty rose with child poverty hitting 8.5% as repayments clashed with essentials.

In hindsight, 2025’s price increases stemmed from sustained inflation, now here to stay. With forecasts for 2-3% rises in 2026, prices will not fall back either. Families and shops adjusted via early promotions and value lines. Ireland’s 10.7% growth masked the squeeze, as many felt sidelined. ‘We are with you to the end’ is a public intervention presented across the river from the former Carnegie Public Library at John’s Quay, which opened in 1910. The words are taken

from Andrew Carnegie, a steel magnate and once the richest man in the world, who donated grants to build 66 libraries throughout Ireland. This statement of solidarity is addressed not

to Carnegie’s steel workers but to his business manager Henry Frick, encouraging Frick to take the necessary actions to break the union at the Homestead Steel Works Strike in 1892.

Displayed here at the bus stop, the words become ambiguous, possibly being reinterpreted as a message of hope and collectivity.

A city under siege... from the wind

The Big Wind damaged a cross at St Canices Cathollic Church

The Tholsel bells rang out to warn of fires during the Big Wind

The Kilkenny Heritage Walkers have been time travelling again. Ailbhe Fitzgerald’s presentation on the cultural significance of the Butler Gallery and the Kilkenny Design Workshops drew sighs of admiration.

Ailbhe displayed a superb academic flair and an uncanny grasp of historical detail as she rhapsodized about the contribution of the Gallery and Design Workshops to the social fabric and celebrated artistic life of Kilkenny.

A week earlier, the walking group had its annual tour of the Christmas cribs.

Marianne Kelly brought her renowned spiritual insights and extensive knowledge of the city’s religious heritage to bear as she painted evocative word pictures. She stood in front of each likeness of the original crib in Bethlehem and as you listened to her eloquent address, you could visualize Jesus, the Wise Men, the humble farm livestock, and the seraphic beings who watched over all.

But the walkers were really “blown away” by historian Paddy Neary’s talk and tour.

With his usual penchant for detail and dramatic pathos, he told the story of a night long ago when the county was caught up in a weather emergency…one so frightening that

Kilkenny folk feared the End of The World.

You almost forgot you were standing in temperatures of two or three degrees below zero when you listened to Paddy recount what happened locally on Ireland’s Night of the Big Wind.

On January 6th 1839, the country experienced one of its greatest ever natural disasters when a windstorm of exceptional severity sweeps the whole island.

It was a surprise attack by nature on the pre-famine population of eight million, many of whom were joyously looking forward to the celebration of Little Christmas.

The day before, heavy snowfall had carpeted the country, a rare enough weather event in itself. Next day, an Atlantic Warm Front arrived to melt the snow. Then came the rain and the wind began to rise to

hurricane force.

By ten o’ clock, the elements ravaged Ireland as never before in the memory of anyone living at the time.

Homes and other buildings were damaged and lightly built structures swept away in the storm. Collapsing chimneys sparked fires.

At least 213 people died countrywide and an estimated 200 ships were cut loose from their moorings.

The fatalities included fishermen whose craft was lashed mercilessly by the wind. In some coastal areas, waves rose to unprecedented heights.

Paddy Neary recalled that Kilkenny’s local media reported on the worst storm ever to engulf the city. He guided the walkers to the main impact sites around Kilkenny, bringing to life the stranger than fiction events of a night that has passed into national folklore.

In reverential tones, the papers claimed that the first sign of the approaching freak of nature was the eerie soughing and whistling of the wind and a sudden citywide series of sharp crashing sounds as slates were dislodged from roofs.

Houses started rocking as if they were made of matchsticks. Terrified householders hid under their beds or took to praying. Roofs were sheared off and some houses were allegedly blown along streets with petrified families still huddling inside.

The papers stated that people in Church Lane, Green’s Bridge, Mill Lane, and Barrack Street looked up to find the roofs gone from their houses, as if a giant had huffed and puffed and made them disappear.

Prominent public buildings also took a hit. Dozens of win-

dows were shattered, including those of the historic Tholsel. The storm spared no house in the city as it wrenched tiles, bricks and slates from roofs or walls that crashed into other buildings.

Not even the residence of the Bishop, opposite Troy’s Gate, escaped the Big Wind.

It knocked the garden wall of his Palace and bricks from it landed far along Green Street.

It struck the Military Barracks too. Local patriots later speculated that the carrying away of the British crown motif over the arch leading into the inner square might have been a foreshadowing of seismic political change to come.

Symbolically, they felt, it might have heralded the departure of the British Army from the barracks, and from Kilkenny itself, in the following century.

St Canice’s Cathedral escaped lightly enough, but a cross was broken on the Western window and a weathercock bent out of shape. Solid stone ornaments at St Canice’s Catholic church were broken, including a much-loved cross.

The one-hundred foot high chimney of the Gas House came crashing down: Part of it narrowly missed a man standing inside the gas works as it hurtled down through the roof.

The storm sparked fires in parts of the city and the Tholsel Bell faithfully rang out to alert citizens.

As with all disasters, the storm also brought out the good in people. A Rev. Sandys gave shelter to some families whose homes were destroyed, offering them food and money to tide them over their misfortune.

And it wasn’t just buildings in the city that felt the impact of nature’s wrath. The storm uprooted trees on the Parade and along the Canal Walk.

It was the same story outside the city. Small cabins were cast aside as if an invisible hand had swiped them, and some hardy men lay across their thatched roofs to prevent the wind from taking them off.

Their wives handed up food and tea to them where practicable as they clung to their precious roofs. With the wind howling ferociously, it was a struggle to keep their homes intact. Haystacks on farms were easy prey for the wind, and livestock went hungry as a result.

A glass house at Jenkinstown was seen sailing eerily over a ten-foot-high wall and smashing into trees, and on the Jenkinstown demesne an estimated 450 trees were uprooted.

At Castlecomer Mr. Wandesforde’s greenhouse was wrecked and he was shocked to find many of his trees ripped up.

There was a belief at the time that Judgment day would coincide with the Feast of the Epiphany, January 6th, which added to the panic and fear that swept the county.

Relief descended like a blessing from above when the storm abated. The full scale of the devastation became apparent as people ventured out of doors again. They offered prayers of thanksgiving that, although there were numerous injuries, at least nobody had died in the storm locally, unlike in other parts of Ireland.

Then came the big clean-up, and, naturally, carpenters and builders cleaned-up financially, with a huge demand for repairs and rebuilding countywide.

Decades later, the storm was still making the news, apart from being vivid in the minds of anyone who experienced it.

When the Old Age Pensions Act became law in 1908, one of the questions asked as proof of age was, “do you personally remember the Night of the Big Wind!”

The next outing for the Kilkenny Heritage Walkers will be in Callan, on Saturday January 17th, where Liam Burke will recount the story of the old Augustinian Abbey and the historic Norman Motte, better known locally as the Moat.

Rethink the drink HEALTH Better sleep, more energy, improved mood, healthier skin and even a lower risk of cancer - these are just some of the benefits of cutting back on alcohol, according to the HSE. And with a new year underway, many people are taking a fresh look at their drinking habits.

Figures from a 2025 Healthy Ireland survey show that one in five adults drinks alcohol several times a week, while over a quarter of people binge drink on a typical night out meaning six or more standard drinks in one session.

Dr Claire Neill, Consultant in Public Health Medicine with the HSE, says even small changes can make a big difference. “Lowering your alcohol intake, or giving up altogether, brings multiple health benefits, including reducing your risk of cancer,” she says. “The New Year is a good time to reflect on habits that may be affecting your health and wellbeing.”

Alcohol is often linked with poor sleep, low energy and feeling anxious or low after a night out - what many people call “the fear”. Drinking less can improve sleep quality, boost mood and help you feel

more focused during the day.

There are physical benefits too. Giving your liver a break allows it to repair itself, while cutting back can also help with weight management, as alcohol is high in calories but low in nutritional value.

Many people also notice improvements in their skin, as alcohol can be dehydrating and contribute to dullness and breakouts.

Longer term, reducing alcohol lowers the risk of several cancers and can help protect brain health, reducing the risk of memory problems and dementia later in life. And there’s a financial bonus as well - with

one in three people in Ireland spending between €30 and €75 a week on alcohol, drinking less can leave more money in your pocket.

If you’re thinking of cutting back, start small. Keep track of how much you drink, set clear limits, drink slowly and alternate alcoholic drinks with water or non-alcoholic options. Eating before and while drinking also helps. Building in alcohol-free days each week can be a simple but effective first step.

When it comes to fitness, it’s easy to think you need a strict plan, expensive gear or hours in the gym to see results. In reality, the most effective exercise routines are often the simplest - and the ones you can stick with.

Regular movement plays a key role in both physical and mental well-being. It helps keep your heart healthy, strengthens muscles and joints, improves balance and boosts energy levels. Just as importantly, it can lift your mood, reduce stress, and improve sleep - something many of us struggle with in our busy day-to-day lives.

The good news is that fitness doesn’t have to mean running marathons or lifting heavy weights. Walking is one of the most accessible forms of exercise and can be done almost anywhere.

A brisk 30-minute walk most days of the week can improve cardiovascular health and clear the head at the same time. Breaking this into shorter walks still counts, especially if time is tight.

Adding a little strength work can make a big difference, too.

The key is consistency, not intensity. Choose activities you enjoy - whether that’s walking with a friend, swimming, gardening or a local fitness class - and build them into your routine.

Hair goals for 2026 HAIR Hair trends for 2026 are all about confidence, polish and a touch of nostalgia, with styles that feel considered but not overdone. There’s a strong move away from fussy finishes and subtle colour work, and towards cleaner shapes, richer tones and hair that looks healthy, glossy and intentional.

The bob is still very much front and centre, but it’s evolving. Think sharp, blunt cuts worn sleek and shiny, or softer versions with a bit of texture and flipped ends that nod to 1990s supermodel style.

It’s a cut that suits many face shapes and works just as well polished for evenings as it does slightly undone for day.

The HSE has issued an urgent warning for anyone feeling unwell with two key symptoms as the highly contagious Norovirus stomach bug spreads across Ireland.

The HSE says most people recover at home within a few days.

Rest and plenty of fluids are usually all that’s needed, and there’s no need for antibiotics, as it’s caused by a virus.

To stop the bug spreading, the HSE advises staying home if you have vomiting or diarrhoea and avoiding work, school, social visits, hospitals and care homes. You should continue to stay away for at least 48 hours after symptoms end.

Good hygiene is essential. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, disinfect surfaces, and wash soiled clothes or bedding on a hot cycle. Alcohol hand gels won’t kill norovirus. Following these simple steps helps protect others and keeps services running smoothly.

Dandie Dinmont terriers and magnetic cows!

So, if every dog has its day, where does that leave our feline friend the cat? Does every cat have its day? And if every cat has its day, what about big cats – the cheetah, the cougar, the lion. Do they all have their day? And what sort of a day is it? And, come to think of it, what sort of day does the dog have? A fine feed of Paddy Kenna’s steak and a dalliance with a delightful Dandie Dinmont Terrier perhaps.

Oh, and while I’m at it, does every cow have its day? And tell me it’s not that day out to the abattoir. That would be sad. Very sad. And what about the elephant? The rhinoceros? The giraffe? What sort of day might they have?

And then there’s the Duckbill Platybus. God only knows what sort of day it might have?

As I think about it – do all creatures, great and small, have their day? Although I have no idea what this ‘day’

might entail. And then there’s the owl – does every owl have its night? Do all night creatures have their night?

And although I’m well used to having a night out myself, I’d dearly love to know what a night-out might entail for these nocturnal neighbours of ours.

Now as I was typing this, a tiny creature scuttled across

my computer screen. What was it? Have no idea. And where was it off to in such a hurry? On its night out I’d like to think. Good for it.

And good it was scuttling quickly or it might have come to a sad end beneath my thumb. Some night out that would have been. ****** Apart for making wonder-

ful, loyal pets, dogs are very useful. A dog’s nose has 220 million olfactory cells compared to our 5 million. Dogs can be trained to find anything by smell – drugs, landmines, cadavers. They can even smell cancer. Doctors in California have found that Labradors can detect lung and breast cancer with greater accuracy than stateof-the-art screening equipment. The dogs correctly identified 99% of lung cancer sufferers and 88% of breast cancer patients by smelling their breath. ****** Cats can see some six times better at night than us humans and need only a sixth amount of the light than a person does to make out the world around and are most active in the low light of dawn and dusk. As for inoffensive, placid cows, and wait for this, are fed magnets to cope with ‘hardware disease’ ie. the damage

caused by the bits of wire and nails that they regularly swallow. The magnet sits in the first part of the stomach (there are four) and lasts the cow’s lifetime.

Now. we all know about getting a ring in the barmbrack at Halloween but getting a magnet in your steak – at anytime would not be a pleasant experience. Imagine the scenario: Waiter: “How would, sir, like his steak?” Sir: “Medium rare, without a magnet.” And off the waiter scurries in a huff and on his high-horse. ****** Horses, as it happens, feature on the menus of many cultures – not least in France. France’s partiality to horse meat allegedly dates back to the Battle of Eylau in 1807 when Napoleon’s surgeon-in-chief advised the starving troops to eat dead battlefield horses! Actually I was tempted to try the horse

meat once in France but chickened out. ****** Regarding poultry, people wrote with goose quills up to the 19th century. The word pen comes from the Latin ‘penna’ for feather while in the ancient world geese were the focus of fertility cults and goose fat was considered a powerful aphrodisiac. Even today the verb ‘to goose’ has a sexual connotation. ****** Finally the phrase ‘to bark up the wrong tree’ comes from 19th century American hunting when dogs would chase animals like racoons up trees but sometimes mistakenly bark at the base of an empty tree while the prey escaped, symbolising a wasted effort or futile pursuit. ****** Finally, finally, poodles were originally used for duckhunting, the word comes from the German for ‘to splash in water’.

Choices Shape Your Future

Be the change and start a revolution When thinking about what to write this week I had many ideas about mental health ,social media, global and political troubles etc. and the list gets longer everyday… so I decided not to go there as I am heartily sick of being reminded of all that’s wrong . We know there are lots of problems out there and I heard a sad, wise person recently say, “There’s nothing like a catastrophe to make you think how you could have prevented it!” So, let’s be radical and look backwards to go forwards!

So, as the catastrophe list gets longer, let’s think of ways to start a revolution and not buy into all the doom. I’m talking here of small personal changes that can challenge so called norms that up to now have been socially acceptable.

Do something different and make a difference! A small spark can start a fire…. Ireland banned smoking in pubs, got rid of free plastic bags and

embraced same sex marriage.

All so unthinkable at the time.

Change is always possible and starts with small groups persevering and making themselves heard.

When change happens and becomes normalized and accepted, people wonder why it took so long.

What changes can you make before it’s too late? The geni may be out of the bottle re social media for example but, be radical…don’t waste precious time. Make an effort to unhook from screens.

Recent research shows that exposure to screens for babies and toddlers damages brains development re language and motor skills, communication and interaction. All humans need interaction not passive screens. Babies learn from human engagement e.g. touch, sound etc.…Kids imitate behaviour and develop from who they are with not from what they watch.

Kids of 2 and 3 years are very curious. Teaching kids skills like playing, sharing, reading , and making things are investments in their future with long term dividends. We can create healthier future kids… more creativity, get outdoors and ditch processed food.

A new trend which I predict will become the norm is alcohol free stag parties and weddings. It has always been a given that young men would meet, get off their heads, forget what had happened say, “I feel awful but didn’t we have a great time?” This too is changing and stag parties are becoming more activity based… surfing, bowling, barbeques etc. where there are opportunities for bonding, interaction and creating deeper relationships. This is to be applauded and it is something that guys need to invest in too. Research shows that men historically have less deep friendships than women

and are more lonely.

One of my many hats, is as a registered legal Humanist Wedding and funeral celebrant. How times have changed as these were always monopolized by the church!

It suggests deep self awareness and sticking to one’s core principles. I’ve worked with the dying, and many regret not being true to themselves.

Living with radical awareness is not easy in today’s world. Historically lies were told that future generations then realized were not true. Goffs Thyestes Chase 2026 The launch of the 2026 Goffs Thyestes Chase took place in fitting surroundings at Closutton, the home of Irish Champion Trainer and record winner of the Goffs Thyestes Chase, Willie Mullins. The event marked an exciting start to the new year and set the tone for what promises to be another memorable renewal of one of Irish racing’s most prestigious handicap chases.

A group of valued sponsors from Gowran Park were in attendance, along with local TD Peter “Chap” Cleere and several Directors from Gowran Park. Guests were also delighted to meet last year’s Goffs Thyestes Chase winner Nick Rockett, whose remarkable season culminated in a historic victory in the Aintree Grand National, adding further prestige to the race’s roll of honor.

The morning provided an excellent opportunity to celebrate the rich history of the Goffs Thyestes Chase, its unique place in the National Hunt calendar, and the strong links between Gowran Park, owners, trainers, sponsors, and the local community.

For one January afternoon, Gowran Park becomes the centre of the Irish racing world, with hundreds of racegoers new and old attending Gowran Park for one of the biggest race events of the year.

Sponsored by bloodstock auctioneers Goffs for 15 years, the Goffs Thyestes Chase is a Grade 3 National Hunt handicap steeplechase with a distance of 3 miles and 1 furlong (5,029 meters). A field of 18 horses aged 5 years old and upwards who have run at least four times in steeplechases up to and including a date close to race day compete, jumping over 17 fences in the race.

Victors of the Goffs Thyestes Chase win the honours and €60,000 as part of a prize fund of €100,000. This event always draws huge crowds and creates a profound buzz in the local area. Visitors can antici-

As this is a handicapped race, each horse is assigned weights, with better-performing horses carrying heavier weights to provide an equal chance of winning across the field. This means less-fancied horses could triumph, making form study difficult for punters.

Another challenge is the distance of 3 miles and 1 furlong (5029 metres) and the inclusion of 17 fences. This requires significant stamina and jumping ability from the horses, such is the long distance and large number of fences to be jumped over.

In addition, the ground at Gowran Park can be challenging for horses, especially if it is soft, as the track comprises

notable undulations and a testing uphill finish. Lastly, runners face the task of navigating a large maximum field of 18 competitors, which can

Witten by Michael Doyle The Thyestes Chase is a prominent race with a demanding track and renowned reputation. As well as this, it has a rich history with a roll of honour that includes several legendary winners who would win other big races as well. Here is a summary of the famous runners, riders, and trainers who claimed victory in the Thyestes Chase.

The Runners: There’s many famous winners of the Thyestes Chase such as Arkle who won in 1964, the same year Arkle won the first of his three Cheltenham Gold Cups, and FlyingBolt in 1966, who also won the Irish Grand National & Queen Mother Champion Chase in the same year.

Two winners of the Thyestes Chase, Hedgehunter in 2004, and Numbersixvalverde in 2005, would win the Aintree Grand National the following year, while 2025’s winner Nick Rockett went on to claim victory in the Bobbyjo

Chase before he too claimed victory in the Aintree Grand National the same year.

Since 1955, there have been six double winners of the Thyestes Chase: Copp (1955 and 1958), Greek Vulgan (1967 and 1969), Bob Treacy (1999 and 2001), and On His Own (2012 and 2014). In particular, two of these six have won their victories back-to-back. Wylde Hide was the first to achieve this feat in 1995 and 1996, before Priests Leap did the same in 2008 and 2009, winning both races at odds of 20 to 1.

It’s worth noting there have been some close finishes also, for example, in 2023, Carefully Selected won in a thriller where a photo finish was required to decide the outcome.

The Riders: Since 1988, two jockeys have won the Thyestes Chase 3 times: David Casey onboard This Is Serious (2002), Hedgehunter (2004), and On His Own (2012) and Paul Townend onboard On His Own (2014), Carefully Selected (2023), and Nick Rockett (2025).

The Trainers: Since 1988, Willie Mullins is the most successful trainer of the Thyestes Chase with 10 wins to

his name.

These include Micko's Dream (2000), Hedgehunter (2004), Homer Wells (2007), On His Own (2012, 2014), Djakadam (2015), Invitation Only (2019), Total Recall (2020), Carefully Selected (2023), and Nick Rockett (2025).

It’s clear to see that there have been many great victors to complement the prestigious nature of the Thyestes Chase.

Kilkenny pint shock ahead

BUSINESS Kilkenny food and drink producers are being called on to step into the national spotlight as Lidl Ireland opens applications for its 2026 Kickstart Supplier Development Programme.

Now in its 10th year, the Bord Bia backed initiative is designed to help ambitious small and medium-sized producers break into the supermarket sector and scale their businesses. Successful applicants take part in a tailored six-month programme, receiving practical support in areas such as product development, production efficiency, packaging, marketing and growth planning.

The programme culminates in a promotional listing, with Kickstart products stocked across Lidl’s 234 stores nationwide. Many past participants have gone on to secure permanent listings and expand into international markets through Lidl’s global network.

Applications are open until 31 January at lidl.ie/kickstart.

Just months after winning over festival-goers at Savour Kilkenny, Kufiya Sweets has reached a major milestone with the opening of its first shop at Kilkenny Market Cross.

The new shop offers a tempting range of authentic Palestinian sweets, alongside desserts inspired by flavours from around the world, all handmade with care. It’s not just about sweets either - a new savoury section features snacks, sandwiches and freshly baked pastries, making it a spot for every time of day.

The opening marks the first Palestinian food shop in Kilkenny, a significant moment for both the founders and the city’s growing food scene. From market stalls to a permanent home, Kufiya Sweets’ journey is one worth celebrating - and tasting.

The price of a pint of Guinness looks set to rise once more, with Diageo confirming a fresh increase in the cost of its draught products from early February.

Publicans have been told that the wholesale price of Guinness will go up by seven cent per pint (excluding VAT) from Monday, February 2, a move that many say will inevitably be passed on to customers.

The Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI) has criticised the increase, warning that pubs are already under severe financial pressure and have little room left to absorb fur-

ther costs.

Drink costs are now the single biggest expense facing pubs, according to the VFI, with rising wages, energy bills and general inflation already squeezing margins.

Kilkenny man Pat Crotty, CEO of the VFI, said publicans are being pushed to the limit.

“Publicans are being hit from all sides, but drink costs are the biggest burden they face.

This latest price increase from Diageo will put even more pressure on pubs that are already operating on extremely tight margins.”

“Many will be left with no option but to pass this on to customers, which helps nobody.”

Mr Crotty said pubs un-

derstand that suppliers are also facing higher costs, but warned that repeated increases are making it harder for local pubs - particularly in rural areas - to survive.

“Our members understand that suppliers also face rising costs, but there comes a point where pubs simply cannot keep carrying these increases alone.”

“Pubs are at the heart of local communities and suppliers depend on them for their route to market. We expect suppliers, including Diageo, to recognise that reality and to support VFI members rather than repeatedly adding to their cost base.”

The VFI says the knock-on

effect for customers is clear: higher wholesale prices mean higher prices at the counter.

“This isn’t just about the price of a pint,” Mr Crotty added. “It’s about the longterm viability of pubs across the country.

Community pubs are being pushed to the brink, and continued increases in drink prices only accelerate that trend.”

Diageo said the increase reflects ongoing cost pressures across the industry. A spokesperson said the company had informed pubs of a €0.07 increase per pint of Guinness, and a €0.10 increase per pint of Guinness 0.0, effective from February 2.

Stricter Listeria rules bite in FOOD

From July 1, 2026, stricter EU rules will apply to ready-toeat foods (anything you can eat without cooking) to help reduce the risk of Listeria, a harmful bacteria that can grow in certain foods over time.

The rules affect food businesses that make, prepare, slice, portion or repackage products where Listeria could grow. That means manufacturers, some retailers and caterers will need to take extra precautions.

Foods most likely to be affected include: • Cooked and sliced meats, pâtés

• Smoked fish, like salmon • Soft cheeses and other dairy products • Pre-prepared fruit and vegetables, such as bagged salads

The key change for these higher-risk foods is that Listeria must be completely absent in a 25 g sample - unless testing shows it won’t grow, in which case it must remain below safe levels throughout the product’s shelf life. Many businesses will now need to carry out shelf-life testing to prove their products are safe until the use-by date.

Foods not affected include very acidic or dry items, products with a short shelf life (under five days), heat-

treated foods in sealed packaging, and low-risk foods like bread, sugar, honey or bottled drinks.

The European Commission

has also published guidance for food businesses, showing how to classify foods correctly, test shelf life and keep clear records of checks.

FRESHFORD DEATH The death took place last weekend of another of Freshfords senior citizens with the passing of Priscilla Flanagan late of Clintstown Road, Freshford. The deceased who was in her mid 80s had been unwell recently but nevertheless her passing caused shock and sadness. She ran a very successful B and B business in the village for many years with visitors from UK, Europe and America staying with her. She loved animals and especially her dogs and was a member of Kilkenny hunt. Two huntsmen led the cortege to the church on their horses and there was also a guard of honour. She was predeceased by her husband Larry last October. Funeral mass took place in St.Lachtains Church Frehford followed by burial in Tullaroan cemetery. She is mourned by her daughters Edel, Irene and Fionnuala, grandchildren, brother, sister, sister in law, and extended family to whom sympathy is extended.

BACK DOWN UNDER After spending Christmas time in their native home, some have returned back to Australia during the past week including Paul Guinan, Seamus Hayes and his new wife Shauneen, Kim Farrell and her family who had their baby boy christened during their stay and Ross Costigan and his wife and family who also spent Christmas in Freshford SYMPATHY Sympathy is extended to Mrs. Jacinta Power of Garnamanagh, Freshford on the death last week of her father John Grace late of Lissadell Park, Carrick on Suir, Co.Tipperary. Funeral mass took place on Wednesday of last week in St. Nichola’s church, followed by burial in St. Mary’s cemetery.

For more info or for an appointment contact MABS on 0818072610 JAMES STEPHENS GAA AND CAMOGIE CLUB CAMOGIE AGM At a well attended camogie AGM, outgoing chairman Brian Leahy reflected on a very positive year for the club’s camogie teams across all grades in 2025. Chief among the successes was the senior team’s retention of their senior status following their 1st round victory over O’Loughlin Gaels before going down to Tullaroan in the championship quarter final. But for injuries to leading players and holiday commitments results might have been different. Looking to the future and, continuing on an optimistic note, the Junior team captured the Kilkenny “C” camogie league title following their four round unbeaten run through the league programme and their impressive county final 1-19 to 3-04 victory over Mooncoin. Notable progress was also seen at minor, U-16 and U-14 levels where club teams won through to the knockout stages of their league and championship campaigns only to lose out narrowly having contested strongly to the end in each grade. The U-13 performed with great credit winning their championship final beating neighbours Danesfort 2-04 to 1-01 in the county decider. Interest at U-12 level was such that the team mentors felt justified in entering teams in the Kilkenny “A” and “B” leagues competitions to give all players game time. Brian also noted that a measure of the growing interest in camogie in the club can be judged by the large numbers, over 40 young girls regularly turning up for the Nursery coaching sessions which covers the U-10, U-8 and U-6 age grades which augurs well for the future of camogie in the club into the future. Closing the meeting club chairman Richie thanked Brian for his work in promoting camogie over his 11-year tenure in office pointing out that the game has grown from a footnote at meetings just 5/6 years ago to its present standing in club affairs. With no contests for officeship, the meeting confirmed Amy Granville as chairperson, Philip Larkin as vice-chairman and Emer Larkin as camogie secretary for the coming season.

COIS NORE RUN The 5th annual Cois Nore charity 5K Run/Walk takes place on St. Brigid’s Day Bank Holiday, Monday 5th February in The Castle Park. Committee member Sheila Murphy would like to thank their sponsors Carne, Kilkenny City Harriers and

U16s; An excellent 2-1 win for our U16s against a strong and determined Bridge United team. Goals from Ava Walsh and Alice Nelson secured all three points and keep us top of the league.

U12s; East End Under 12 girls had a superb first win of the new year against Durrow. A great team performance full of effort, spirit and skill. Well done to everyone for giving it their all at every position on the pitch. Thanks to our joint captains today; Leah and Holly.

GRAIGUE BALLYCALLAN CELEBRATION NIGHT Graigue Ballycallan GAA Club are delighted to announce that we will be having a Night of Celebrations in the Set Theatre in Langtons on Saturday 14th February 2026.

October 2025 marked 25 years since we won the Senior County Final – the Millenium Year, where we then went on to contest in the All Ireland Club Final. Two years before the Millennium, we were victorious in the 1998 Senior County Final.

The 1998 and 2000 Teams will be honoured on the night, along with our U21 Roinn A Champions 2025. It will be a night not to be missed, as we will have a special ‘programme’ set out for the event with interviews, footage, food and craic. Doors open at 6:30pm with ‘throw in’ at 7pm sharp. One of the key opportunities currently available is the Local Training Initiative (L.T.I.) Programme. This is a free training course that will be starting soon and is open to anyone interested in developing new skills and improving their employability. The programme includes Driving Theory and Driving Lessons, offering participants a valuable opportunity to gain essential life and work-related skills. Anyone interested in applying is encouraged to call into the Centre or contact staff directly for further details and application information.

The Centre also provides weekly Maths Grinds, which are currently ongoing. These grinds are suitable for Junior Certificate students and 5th Year students, offering extra academic support in a structured and supportive environment.

The sessions are designed to help students build confidence, improve understanding, and enhance exam preparation. Parents or students seeking more information are invited to contact the Centre directly.

A wide range of community services are available through The Mill Family Resource Centre.

These include Senior Alert Alarms, which help older members of the community to feel safe and supported in their homes. The Centre also facilitates clothes donations, helping families in need while promoting sustainability and community sharing. A Youth Club provides young people with a safe and positive space to socialise and engage in activities, while allotments are available for those interested in gardening and outdoor wellbeing. In addition, the Cois Nore Advice Clinic offers guidance and support on a variety of personal and practical matters.

The Centre places a strong emphasis on mental health and emotional wellbeing. Counselling services are available for both adults and teenagers, covering areas such as bereavement, addiction, and general counselling needs.

These confidential services aim to provide professional support in a safe and understanding environment. In addition, Play Therapy is available for children aged 4 and over, helping young people to express themselves and work through challenges in a developmentally appropriate way.

Social connection is also a key focus of the Centre. The Active Retirement Group meets every Thursday from 2pm to 4pm, providing a welcoming space for older adults to socialise, stay active, and engage in community life. New members are always welcome to join and take part in the group’s activities.

STONEYFORD ACTIVE RETIREMENT Stoneyford Active Retirement Group is a group of people from Stoneyford and its environs. It is open to anyone who wishes to join. It is mainly made up of retirees but that is not a requirement. Membership is €20.00 for the year. We run a wide variety of activities in the Community Centre (yoga, bowls, cards, etc.). We regularly have classes (flower arranging, art, pottery, jewellery making, beading, to name but a few).

We also have outings to theatres, houses, gardens and museums. Members are free to make suggestions for activities, classes or outings and if enough people are interested, we will do our best to accommodate them. We have meetings on the first Wednesday of the month, which includes refreshments. At some of our meetings, we will have a guest speaker. Our next meeting is in the Community Centre, Stoneyford on the 4th of February at 2.30p.m. and a welcome for all.

Dioralyte Walsh Shield Semi Final 2026 Laois 0-10 Kilkenny 2-17 Kelly O’Daly Park, Rathdowney–Errill At the second time of asking Derek Lyng’s team got their season up and running with a comfortable 13-point win over Laois at the home of Rathdowney–Errill GAA last weekend to qualify for the Shield Final, where they will face-off against Brian Dowling’s Kildare.

The Kilkenny management used a total of 21 players in the Dioralyte Walsh Shield Semi Final and no doubt, the performances of a few will have given plenty of food for thought. Cathal Beirne, Gearoid Dunne and Liam Moore put in good shifts from the start, while Michael Brennan impressed when sprung from the bench early in the second half, notching 5-points in an eyecatching cameo. Wexford whistler Gearoid McCarthy was a little over fussy at times, lots of frees given for the ‘throw ball’, which led to the game not being as fluid as it could have been.

Kilkenny got off to a great start, with Eoin Cody splitting the posts from out on the right in the opening minute. The Shamrocks Ballyhale man was looking lively and doubled his tally soon after, when converting his first placed ball of the afternoon thanks to the ref’s lust for blowing up the ‘throw ball’. Glenmore’s Cathal Beirne was another in black and amber that started the game well, and he intercepted the next puck out before firing over to push the visitors lead to three points. Eoin Cody’s next placed ball attempt from way out the park struck the upright and it was Derek Lyng’s men that reacted quickest, recycling the sliotar and working it out to Gearoid Dunne, and the Tullaroan man made no mistake to increase his team’s lead. The hardworking Dunne was then fouled, and this gave Cody the opportunity to pop over his third point of the Walsh Shield clash.

Having got off to a decent start, things got a whole lot better for the Noresiders. Captain Darragh Corcoran played a lovely ball to Gearoid Dunne who collected well before popping a pass to the supporting Liam Moore and the Dicksboro man finished to the net with seven minutes played in Rathdowney to leave the score 1-5 to no score, not the start that the home side would have hoped for. Tommy Fitzgerald’s charges opened their account on eight minutes when Mossy Keyes was fouled, and Borris-in-Ossory– Kilcotton player Aaron Dunphy slotted over his first point of the game. From the restart, Mossy Keyes took possession and doubled his side’s tally with a nice score out on the left.

The last score of a blustery first half came from the hurl of Laois’s Aaron Dunphy, who notched his third point of the semifinal encounter, to leave the Kilkenny lead at eight points on the short whistle.

The Noresiders made one change to the playing personnel for the second period, with Dicksboro’s Timmy Clifford replacing Thomastown’s Peter McDonald. The scoreboard got moving thanks to another placed ball effort from Aaron Dunphy.

One of Kilkenny’s best performers on the day, Cathal Beirne took his third score of the afternoon from out on the right, much to the delight of management and supporters.

The stop-start nature of the half continued, thanks to the contribution of referee Gearóid McGrath. This time when a huge ruck was ensuing along the endline, close to Aidan Tallis’s goals, the Wexford Whistler blew and signaled a penalty for the home side. Interesting decision to say the least, perhaps he wanted to make the game interesting. Aaron Dunphy stepped forward and struck his effort, but Aidan Tallis’s agility saw the Lisdowney man deflect the shot behind for a ‘65, which the same Laois player also missed.

With 40 minutes played in Kelly O’Daly Park, another free was awarded for, you guessed it folks, another ‘throw ball’. Eoin Cody composed himself, made adjustments for the oncoming wind and struck over a testing placed ball from out on the left. Laois sub Diarmuid Dooley then made good progress before passing to Jack Kelly, who split the posts for a much-needed score for the home side, eight points the difference once again. The margin of arrears that Tommy Fitzgerald’s men found themselves in was about to increase, thanks to a second major from Derek Lyng’s men. The ball was

played out of defence by Jordan Molloy who found Liam Moore, the ‘Boro man turned and drove the ball towards Eoin Cody, who collected possession before popping a pass to the on running Gearoid Dunne. The Tullaroan man wasted no time in striking a low shot into the ground beyond the diving Eoin Reilly to quash any hopes of an O’Moore County comeback. Laois sub, James Keyes then sent over a really sweet score from distance and the home side struck the next point of the game also, this time via the impressive Jack Kelly from the centre of the field.

Unsurprisingly, the last free of the game was given for, drum roll..... a throw ball. As the game entered stoppage time, Jack Kelly showed great skill when executing a sideline cut to register the game’s final score.

“Throw ball” I have been hearing this in my head all week! Anyway, moving on from the referee, Kilkenny had a decent run-out in Rathdowney–Errill GAA last weekend. Cathal Beirne really stood out, notching 3 points while the way the team worked the ball through the lines, will have pleased the manager and his backroom team.

The result means that the Cats will be out again this weekend, taking on the challenge of Kildare who overcame Davy Fitz’s Antrim by the bare minimum at Manguard Park. This game will see former All-Ireland winner, Brian Dowling take on his beloved Kilkenny in the shield final. The O’Loughlin’s man will have his side well drilled and prepared for the game and this one might not be all one-way traffic!
