Observer Glanbia exits Irish dairy KILKENNY-based Glanbia plc has agreed to sell its 40% share in the country’s largest dairy processor to concentrate on making nutritional ingredients for food producers and protein supplements for body builders.

Glanbia is to sell its 40% interest in Glanbia Ireland to Glanbia Co-op, which is owned by farmers who supply milk to the company, for €307m.

Glanbia Co-op already holds

the remaining 60% off the country’s biggest dairy processor, best-known to shoppers for products including Avonmore milk, Kilmeaden and GAIN Animal Nutrition.

Glanbia plc, which is stock market listed, said it will focus on growing its global nutrition and performance divisions, as well as strategic joint ventures.

The proceeds from the proposed transaction will be primarily invested in growth op-

portunities with up to 50% of the proceeds being returned to shareholders via a share buyback.

Glanbia Ireland is a joint venture owned 60% by Glanbia Co-op and 40% by the PLC. GI is the largest milk processor and grain buyer in Ireland, producing a range of valueadded dairy ingredients and consumer products as well as selling farm inputs. GI operates 11 processing plants, 52

agri retail branches and has over 2,000 employees.

In the 2020 financial year on a 100% basis, GI generated €1.9 billion in revenue and a profit after tax of €60m.

She said today’s proposed deal is consistent with the company’s strategy to focus on its two growth platforms, Glanbia Performance Nutrition and Glanbia Nutritionals, as well as strategic joint ventures.

Glanbia Co-op said it has also proposed to transfer 12 million Glanbia plc shares to all existing members of the society.

Community united in grief THE funeral takes place today, of 13-year-old Harry Byrne who died earlier this week following a tragic lunchtime accident at St Kieran’s College.

Shock and great sadness has been expressed throughout his home village of Gowran and further afield. A community that will be united with grief during Requiem Mass which takes place at 12noon at the Church of the Assumption, Gowran, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

The young man was a sporting fanatic and an important member of Young Irelands GAA club in the parish. A statement from the club paid tribute to the “bubbly, fun-loving” player, “a real leader” who gave his all every time he played.

Housing crisis blocks economic success – RE/MAX THE availability of an abundant supply of high-quality housing, to rent or purchase at affordable prices, is an essential pre-requisite for economic success and social solidarity, according to a new RE/ MAX Housing Market report.

Author, Jim Power said, “The supply of high-quality housing is a necessary condition for labour mobility within a country and between countries. For Ireland, inward migration is an essential support

to the economy, and expensive housing can be a major impediment to such labour flows.”

The report addresses trends in Irish house prices and private rents, as well as supply and demand issues. The mortgage market and lending regulations, the cost of residential building, and the impact of the Government’s Housing for All policy and Budget 2022 also come under the spotlight.

Commenting on the latest CSO data on house prices, Paul Gartlan, Regional Director of RE/MAX Ireland, said that affordability is under pressure due to supply issues driving higher house prices, and the Central Bank’s mortgage lending rules.

Facilitating home ownership for younger people who aspire to it would take pressure off the rental market, ease rents, and alleviate growing pressure on the Housing

Assistance Payment (HAP), outlined the report, while calling for an adjustment to lending terms.

A reduction in the VAT rate on new housing to 5% for owner-occupiers, would also reduce the cost of delivery of new houses the report stated.

The Irish mortgage holder is also getting a very raw deal, according to the report. The latest data from the Central Bank shows that average Irish mortgage rates in August

were the second highest in the Euro Zone, and are 1.27% above the Euro Zone average.

Affordability and mortgage constraints have the knockon effect of forcing people into an expensive rental market.

Paul Gartlan said, “In many cases, average monthly rents are higher than monthly mortgage repayments. Renters would prefer to build up equity in an asset, but lending regulation is limiting their

prospects of home ownership.”

Lending should be reviewed in the overall context of the housing crisis, Jim Power stated, in order to help futureproof standards of living and the draw on State supports.

“Given that many younger people have poor or no pension arrangements, the financial implications later in life of continued renting and never actually owning a home, are significant”, he said.

Farm-sourced energy could be feather in our CAP LOCAL energy stakeholder, 3cea has broadly welcomed the Climate Action Plan (CAP) 2021 published by Government last week.

The non-profit, independent energy agency 3 Counties Energy Agency (3cea) stated it was “encouraged by the continued effort and commitment” to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels with a focus on “de-carbonising” the Irish energy system.

Working across counties Kilkenny, Carlow and Wexford, 3cea welcomed CAP’s continued focus on enabling communities as this is “important to the future management of our energy provision and use.” However, it also urged some caution.

Paddy Phelan, CEO of 3cea, noted an important change, “The 2019 document had a plan that could be followed. People knew what they had to do and a lot has been done. While last week’s plan lists a large number of desirable actions it does not specify a timeline or make clear who is responsible for carrying out the work. There are big calls to be made without a clear pathway to follow.

Achievement of these goals will need a lot of political support,” he said.

He also noted that for Home Retrofit, the plan has kept the same target numbers and pointed out that already this is not happening.

a substantial overhang. This cannot be blamed on Covid.

There is a resource shortage and the cost of materials has increased.

Paddy welcomed the commitment in the Local Authority sector to retrofitting street lighting, citing major achievements in the South East.

Kilkenny County Council retrofitted 60% of street lighting in the city in 2016 using an energy performance green procurement pilot. This will extend to 100% over the next two or three years.

The Danone plant in Wexford is another shining example. It has become the first zero-carbon milk powder manufacturer plant in the world.

“The key point here,” said Paddy, “is that the changes are at the community level.

Local industry can convert using biomass supplied by local farmers. Local farmers are generating income from their woodlands and not the business as usual multinational oil producers. Policymakers need to learn from this type of best practice example. Bioenergy (biomass, biogas, biofuels) can all be supplied by the local agriculture sector. This makes agriculture a strong potential solution provider to the decarbonisation of our energy system.”

Local solutions feature strongly in 3cea thinking pointing out that a town like Callan could become net energy positive from locally sourced energy sources by 2030. Callan Energy Community was one of the successful applicants to the Community Specific Renewable Energy Support Scheme auction of 2020.

“Some great models are being trialled locally with communities working together through the Sustainable Energy Communities Programme and County led Better Energy Community grant programmes,” Paddy concluded.

Recipe for success on offer to Kilkenny foodie start-ups THE closing date is fast approaching for applications for Food Works, a collaborative initiative run by Bord Bia, Enterprise Ireland and Teagasc for innovative and export driven food and drink start-ups.

If you want to follow in the footsteps of thriving food and drink companies as Nobó, Wicklow Wolf, and Fiid, you have until December 3 to apply.

The collaborative food

and drink entrepreneurship programme is designed for rising stars to help them transform from a start-up to an investor-ready company, with a focus on scaling internationally. Over 100 companies have successfully completed the unique programme since it began in 2012.

The initiative, now in its tenth year, includes workshops with national and international industry experts

across disciplines such as strategy, finance, product development and marketing. Participants are also eligible to apply for feasibility grant funding of up to €35,000 through Enterprise Ireland.

Work is the new retirement plan A NEW report ‘Bringing Retirement into Focus: 2021’, commissioned by retirement experts, Standard Life, highlights how the retirement landscape has altered in Ireland with many no longer seeing the appeal in a sudden and complete end to their working

life. The study of 1,150 adults, across five generations, explores people’s attitudes, expectations and experiences with regards to retirement and identifies how they differ by generation, gender and financial security.

The traditional view of re-

tirement is changing with just over half (51%) of adults in Leinster saying they would like to continue working beyond their retirement date, even if financially comfortable. This illustrates an increasing reluctance amongst adults to view retirement as an abrupt end

to being employed. Instead, people are more likely to see it as a time for a change of pace.

Over a third (38%) of all adults now see retirement as an opportunity to step back from a traditional working environment and to explore new ways of fulfilling their potential.

The Fact Of The Matter PAUL HOPKINS

How our duty of care is to one another ...

THE scientific consensus goes that the holy grail for containing Covid – herd immunity – is achievable. Achievable if enough people get the vaccine – at least 70%, if not 90%, of the world’s population (the figures vary). Also, there is the matter of an annual booster, Covid becoming endemic like your yearly flu. It’ll live among us but not always popping over the fence, working up a fever.

With our adult population vaccinated at around 93%, this augurs well for us, but in many parts of the world, say, Africa, the figure is just 2%, affordability and access being discriminating factors.

Then there are those who have not been vaccinated at all and refuse to do so for, they argue, personal reasons, whether medical, quasi-political or, for want of better term, just ‘cos.

Evidence suggests Covid-19 prevalence will slowly decline, despite the present surge, and

most of us are already getting back into a somewhat new take on ‘normal’ life. For such to happen, ‘enough’ people must get vaccinated. And around the world.

This has raised the question of whether we, here in Ireland and elsewhere, should give our surplus shots, not as our boosters but to those many fellow humans in that unenviable position of the affordability factor.

It’s a moral conundrum.

The still greater moral conundrum is that, with the urgency to reach the aforementioned holy grail, do we all, every one of us, have a moral obligation to get vaccinated?

The ethics of vaccine choice can be complex, even more so amid genuine ‘concerns’, and then the hostilities with antivaxxers and conspiracy theorists clambering for position; politicians and commenters, like Joe Duffy, targeted for really inane reasons.

Admittedly, and this cannot be emphasised enough, there are those who cannot be vaccinated for serious medical reasons, and such individuals’ rights have to be given the full understanding of medical acumen and a decent society.

I have been prompted to comment on this issue because it has hit close to home for me and my, in effect, immediate family. But I respect all parties privacy in the matter.

The discussion of whether or not one should take the Covid19 vaccine is often framed in terms of individual self-interest; in other words, the benefits outweigh the risk, so go for it.

That is not a moral argument.

Most of us, if asked, believe that others have a wide berth in determining how they care for their own health, so it can be permissible to engage in risky activities – such as bungy jumping or whatever – even when it’s not necessarily in

one’s ‘interest’. However, where whether one should get vaccinated IS a moral issue is when it affects others. And here it does, in two ways.

First, vaccines have clearly brought down not only rates of infection but also rates of virus transmission. This means that you getting the vaccine can protect others from you personally and contribute to us all reaching the coveted herd immunity.

Second, according to most eminent scientists, high disease prevalence allows for more genetic mutation, which is exactly how new variants arise.

If enough people aren’t vaccinated, and quickly, new variants will develop that are more infectious, more dangerous and also evade current vaccines.

My argument, therefore, says: Getting vaccinated isn’t just about you. Yes, you have the right to take risks with your own safety. But, there is – and here

the philosopher John Stuart Mill comes to mind – the fundamental argument that our freedom is limited by the harm it could do to others. No one of us has any divine right to risk other people’s health, and so we are morally obligated to do our part to (in the instance of Covid)

reduce that risk to others, in short, infection and transmission rates.

There is an overwhelming reason to get vaccinated. But that in itself does not constitute a moral duty as such, and it doesn’t make an action demandable, i.e. legally enforceable.

Acting as though the moral case is straightforward can be alienating to those who disagree. And minimising the potential risks when we ask others to have a substance injected into their body can be disrespectful.

Much better, I think, to engage others rather than demand from them – even if the force of reason ends up clearly in one corner.

The philosopher Emmanuel Kant rightly argues we would be in breach of our nature as rational human beings if we claimed we had no duty of care for each other.

We do.

Covid-19 impact on HE students far-reaching StudentSurvey.ie COVID-19 has substantially affected the lives of students in higher education. That’s according to the results of this year’s Irish Survey of Student Engagement and Irish Survey of Student Engagement for Postgraduate Research Students PGR StudentSurvey.ie.

Almost 44,000 first and final year undergraduate students and students on taught postgraduate programmes, across 25 higher education institutions, took part in the StudentSurvey.ie between February and March 2021, representing 28.4% of the total survey population.

The results highlighted that the undergraduate experience of first year and final year students was negatively affected by the impact of Covid-19. Students in the 2020-2021 academic year returned scores significantly lower than previous years for almost all areas of the survey.

The second survey was directed at 3,541 postgraduate research students. 52% of males indicated they had submitted a paper for publication in an academic journal

or book, compared to 46.7% of females. 17.5% of females had considered withdrawing from their programme of study due to personal or family reasons compared to 13.8% of male respondents.

The results point to the possibility of a gendered aspect to the impact of the Covid19 pandemic, which could disproportionately affect the career progression of female postgraduate research students.

WIT Registrar and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr Derek O’Byrne described this year’s StudentSurvey.ie data as unique. “It captures the experiences of learners within an exceptional societal event and provides a stark contrast given different environments between the comparative years. It is not surprising that the first year experience appears less connected and less engaged and it is somewhat energising to see the technological sector’s scores on collaborative working and accessibility to staff tend to remain above the average.”

Farming families fear CAP fallout on livelihood FARMING families will travel to Dublin on Sunday, November 21 to highlight the importance of their industry to the Irish economy, and to send a strong message to Government that they need to sit down with elected farm leaders to make an agreed plan for the sector.

IFA President Tim Cullinan said, “Farm families are genuinely fearful about what the future holds. We hear all of these high-level targets being announced, but we have no clarity about what this will mean at farm level. I’m inviting all farm families to attend the event,” he said.

“Farmers have families too, and they are very conscious

of the climate challenge and the need for farmers to play their part. But it can’t decimate our incomes. It must provide a future that is economically and socially sustainable, as well as being environmentally sustainable,” he said.

“Recent Government policy proposals, including those on the CAP, are all about reducing production and adding cost. The CAP is there to support farmers to produce food. It cannot be expected to fund climate action as well. The Government needs to come forward with a proper plan, with proper funding behind it,” he said.

The benefit of living backwards AS I SEE IT MARIANNE HERON

A FRIEND who was making a speech at her 80th birthday celebrations suggested that maybe we should live our lives backwards. Think about it, she said, you would climb out of your coffin, gradually lose your aches and pains, get your job back, emerge from that mid-life crisis with everything back in place (minus new spouses, sports cars or whatever,) celebrate your wedding then have an absolute ball in your 20s. Drive your parents mad with your adolescent angst, play all you want in childhood, get loved and looked after in babyhood and start out with really great sex.

The last bit guarantees a good laugh but seriously, age is a great vantage point given all the benefits of hindsight. Just imagine that you are about to pop your clogs, as my sister euphemistically puts it, and that you are reviewing your life.

What would you say was the most fulfilling aspect of it? Fulfilment is not to be confused with gratification, that quick-fix pleasure that

comes with getting some possession that you want, which wears off after you have worn that new outfit or driven that new car a few times. It’s that deep down contentment that comes with a state of expressing fully the real you, in living and doing in ways that give you a sense of rightness and harmony.

And that is the insight that should provide the essential clues to your future after you leave that permanent and pensionable job and start out on the next phase of your life. It isn’t the job title or the role per se like marketing director or mother that we are talking about here, but the qualities in you that selling or mothering brought out in you which gave so much satisfaction. The feeling of fulfilment might have been generated by a single event by a hobby, or by something that you did once but never had a chance to repeat.

Whatever the situation, it was one where time flew unnoticed, where when you think about that particular occasion, it brings a light to your eye, animation to the way that you speak and enjoyment in recollection. If you can put your finger on the skills and qualities that were in play at the time,

those are the very things that you want to use in a new way in the future.

Bucket Lists are fun; if you get to do some of the things on the list - sky diving, walking the Great Wall of China - they will gratify you and give you satisfaction when you tick them off.

But a far more meaningful list is what I call the ‘F-it List’ as in, I want to get that real, honest-to-goodness life is good feeling. That means finding ways to be fulfilled by being you. And you know it really never is too late to find your way to what you really want to be in love, work or the whole damn thing. The other day I met an 80-year-old man who is just about to start a new business in a field he enjoys as he really can’t stand not working, something he really enjoys.

Another recent encounter was with a couple – not far behind him in age - who were relatively newly-wed and obviously still having a blissful time together and were full of plans for all the things they were going to do together. I came home after meeting the trio feeling full of optimism- there’s hope for me yet.

Covid Update

THE first pill designed to treat symptomatic Covid has been approved by the UK medicines regulator.

Developed jointly by Ridgeback Biotherapeutics and Merck, the pill works by interfering with the virus’ replication. This prevents it from multiplying, keeping virus levels low in the body and therefore reducing the severity of the disease, the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said. It can also be administered outside of a hospital.

The MHRA said the decision “follows a rigorous review of its safety, quality and effectiveness” and made it the “first oral antiviral for the treatment of Covid-19 to be approved.”

Based on the clinical trial data, the oral pill is most effective when taken during the early stages of infection. As such, the British regulator recommended its use as soon as possible following a positive Covid test and within five days of the onset of symptoms.

The antiviral pill has been authorised for use in people who have mild to moderate Covid and at least one risk factor for developing severe illness, such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, or heart disease and anyone over the age of 60.

In a statement UK Health secretary, Sajid Javid, said, “This will be a gamechanger for the most vulnerable and the immunosuppressed, who will soon be able to receive the ground-breaking treatment.”

Game-changing pill could turn tide against current wave of Covid-19 The MHRA’s chief executive, June Raine, said that the pill will greatly facilitate the treatment of Covid, a disease that has led to the hospitalization of millions of people around the world, and immense stress on health services and healthcare staff.

“Following a rigorous review of the data by our expert scientists and clinicians, we are satisfied that Lagevrio (molnupiravir) is safe and effective for those at risk of developing severe Covid-19 disease and

have granted its approval,” she said.

“Lagevrio is another therapeutic to add to our armoury against Covid-19. It is also the world’s first approved antiviral for this disease that can be taken by mouth rather than administered intravenously.

This is important, because it means it can be administered outside of a hospital setting, before Covid-19 has progressed to a severe stage,” she said.

therapeutics said that internal data indicated that the risk of hospitalisation or death from Covid was cut in half by molnupiravir. Patients take four pills twice a day for five days.

Treatments to tackle the pandemic, which has killed more than 5.2 million people worldwide, have so far focused mainly on vaccines.

Massive fall in life expectancy, reports OECD COVID-19 contributed to a 16% increase in the expected number of deaths in 2020 and the first half of 2021 across OECD countries.

Life expectancy fell in 24 of 30 countries with comparable data, with drops particularly large in the US (-1.6 years) and Spain (-1.5 years), according to the new OECD Health at a Glance

report.

The mental health impact of the pandemic has been huge, with prevalence of anxiety and depression more than double levels observed pre-crisis in most countries with available data, most notably in Mexico, the UK and the US. Covid-19 has also had a major indirect impact on

people not infected with the virus. For example, breast cancer screening fell by an average of 5% in 2020 compared to 2019, across OECD countries with available data. The median number of days on a waiting list increased on average by 58 days for hip replacement, and 88 days for knee replacement in 2020, as com-

pared to 2019.

The pandemic has also underscored the impact of unhealthy lifestyles, with smoking, harmful alcohol use and obesity increasing the risk of people dying from Covid-19. Yet spending on disease prevention remains relatively low, accounting for only 2.7% of all health spending on average.

In a separate statement, Merck said it expected to produce 10 million courses of the treatment by the end of this year, with at least 20 million set to be manufactured in 2022.

Over 44k cases reported in fortnight THE latest data from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre reveals the highest number of Covid-19 patients in hospital since March 1.

Data compiled up to November 7, puts Ireland’s 14-day incidence of Covid-19 at 895 cases for every 100,000 people.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said, “We have reported over 44,000 cases in the past 14 days.

“The volume of disease in the community is really very high and represents a significant risk to those who are most vulnerable in our society.

“We need to continue to use all of the tools available to us to protect ourselves and others. By layering all of the public health measures with which we are now so familiar, we can help to break the chains of transmission.”

In Northern Ireland, the Department of Health has reported a further seven deaths of patients who had previously tested positive for Covid-19.

At time of writing, Department of Health has been notified of 3,578 additional cases

of Covid-19. The number of patients in ICU with Covid-19 is 83, an increase of five on the same time yesterday.

There are 520 patients in hospital, which is up 22 on the same time yesterday morning.

It is also the highest number in hospital since 1 March, when there were 540 patients with Covid-19.

The hospitals with the highest number of Covid-19 cases are St James’s in Dublin with 44, University Hospital Limerick with 37 and the Regional Hospital Mullingar with 33.

There are 15 adult ICU beds free in the public system.

The counties with the biggest incidence are Waterford with 1,357 cases for every 100,000 people; Carlow has 1,273 cases for every 100,000 and Leitrim has 1,189 cases for every 100,000 people.

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has said the continued decline of Covid incidence in the older population is likely to be at least partly attributable to booster vaccination, alongside continuing adherence to public health measures.

KILKENNY’S National Design & Craft Gallery is the starting point for Made in Ireland, a major exhibition showcasing the largest visual and sensory feast of fresh ideas and craftsmanship ever seen in Ireland.

Exhibits created by Kilkenny craft workers feature in the display, which incorporates the work of over 100 makers from all regions of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The exhibition, which launched on November 5, was borne out of a proposal made by the project team to the De-

sign & Crafts Council Ireland (DCCI) biennial call for exhibitions. Their aim was to bring together a snapshot of what is happening in skilled making in Ireland, to create an exhibition that is ‘big and eclectic but also surprising, joyful, and inspirational’. The open callout attracted over 420 applicants to the juried process.

CEO of Design & Crafts Council Ireland, Rosemary Steen said, “The past 20 months of closures have been a difficult time for our makers and opportunities

to show craft have been reduced, which makes Made in Ireland all the more timely.

During this time the public have engaged more with the sustainability and authenticity of craft. Guilds, Associations, Networks and Societies (GANS) are at the heart of Design & Crafts Council Ireland and we look forward to continuing to support the development of technical and business skills, creating opportunities and promoting craft in Ireland through the work of our dedicated team.”

Exhibitors include makers of international renown as well as young, emerging artists and those who have practised quietly in areas of the country such as Clare Island, West Cork and the North Antrim Coast. Some are members of Design & Crafts Council Ireland’s Portfolio Critical Selection, while others are highly skilled makers who practise away from the spotlight and national competition.

Local exhibitors include, Jerpoint Glass Studio, Inga Reed (jewellery designer/maker), Les Reed, (ceramicist) Mark Campden (ceramicist), Paul Bokslag (visual artist) and Caroline Schofield (visual artist).

A global Elf shortage or Chinese whispers?

WE didn’t have #Elfontheshelf back in my day, but Santa’s spy has been keeping kids in check for several years now.

However, there are a million Elf on the Shelf toys apparently stuck in China due to global port congestion, prompting media scare stories about elf rationing (only two per customer!) conveniently delivering a huge marketing boost for this new tradition.

On December 1, the elf arrives to spy on childrens behaviour in the run-up to Christmas. Parents must hide the elf in a new place every evening for the child to find.

Local toy shops are selling “elf toys” costing anywhere between €7.99 and €49.99.

Parents are using social media to share prank shots of naughty elves.

Why would a so-called childish pastime make national and international news? Money!

It has become a multimillioneuro industry and it’s possible to get us to spend hundreds of euros before Christmas has even arrived.

We are being encouraged to

spend early this Christmas. It’s been reported that experts say supplies of toys and gifts will be “materially constrained” this year”, with one predicting Black Friday and January sales will be muted because of shortages.

Irish book lovers have been warned not to wait until December to buy their Christmas reads because of a “perfect storm” of problems, including a global paper shortage impacting supplies within the industry. And Aoife Roantree of Dubray Books, who is also the chair of Bookselling Ireland, also believes the problem will be made worse by the demand for books in the run-up to Christmas.

And we are warned we can’t currently get the goods we want because of Covid, Brexit and the recent Suez Canal hold-up.

Irish shoppers are warned of the possible supply problems, shipping costs skyrocketing and have been encouraged to buy Christmas gifts early.

While some of the largest toy and home furnishing companies in the country have said that they are experiencing delays ahead of the festive period and so shoppers are encouraged to buy products early this year.

IKEA Ireland has warned of supply chain problems

that are affecting the delivery of some products at its Irish stores, with up to 10 % of goods unavailable.

Is there a conspiracy afoot?

Do retailers want us to get Christmas wrapped up early and buy at full price. Could supply chain issues and talk of

toy shortages this Christmas be clever marketing?

As usual Supermarkets have gone early with Christmas promotions on toys, food and drink. But as we are aware from previous years, the problem with stocking up on wine, champagne, biscuits

and chocolate in November is the risk of polishing it off before Christmas and having to buy more at a later date.

But with all the inflationary pressures, most other retailers cannot afford the usual discounts. We are in the last quarter for retail profitability

so there is a huge amount of pressure to spend big this year.

Surveys suggest many shoppers plan to spend much more on gifts and celebrations to make up for last year.

But remember, it’s not about “stuff”. Christmas is the most emotional time of year; we buy on emotion and retailers sell on emotion, but nobody wants friends or family to get into debt.

Last week we looked at ways of celebrating Christmas without breaking the bank, so, to finish, what about donating money to charity instead of sending Christmas cards?

Give your time; plenty of charities are looking for volunteers who give of their time.

Food banks fear they will be inundated with requests this Christmas and are appealing for help with donations and deliveries.

Whatever celebrations we are planning, it would be heart-warming if helping others either through donating money or giving of our time became as much of a thing as “elfontheshelf” this Christmas.

And as Sergeant Phil Esterhaus of Hill Street Blues’ fame use to say, “Hey, let’s be careful out there.”

Not drinking in the 2020s ANDREW MCDONALD HYPNOTHERAPIST

PRIOR to the 2020s, choice was limited for people who chose not to drink alcohol when socialising. Normal everyday drinking options were plentiful enough. Tea, coffee in a wide variety of styles, tisanes, soft drinks, milk, juice or just good old plain water were enough for daily purposes. That changed completely when we were with friends or at a family event. Whilst a cola, lemonade or fizzy orange is nice, very few of us wanted, or had the stomach, to drink copious amounts of them in one sitting.

There was also the pressure element. If you were in a pub in Ireland and you were obviously drinking something which wasn’t alcoholic, people usually wanted to know why and tried to push you into going for a stronger beverage.

Whilst this perhaps said more about their relationship with alcohol than yours, having to justify yourself repeatedly wasn’t conducive to a good time.

Some people choose never to drink. This can be for religious purposes, health reasons or just because it’s something they don’t want to do. Others do enjoy alcohol but opt to limit consumption, again as part of a healthier lifestyle or because they’re driving.

Whatever your reasons, these are frequently personal and you shouldn’t feel you have to validate your choice.

In recent years, not drinking alcohol has become less of a problem.

In fact it’s actually becoming fashionable. That’s because drinks companies have been investing big time in producing quality non-alcoholic beverages.

There’s even a zero booze pub in Dublin.

There was a time when non-alcoholic drinks were vile. No longer. In fact, they’re actually of such high quality that they are a boom niche within the booze industry. Famous name, zero alcohol, beers, ciders, wines and spirits are available as are offerings from smaller producers. Big on flavour, they don’t get you messy, there’s no hangover and a breathalyser test isn’t go-

ing to turn out badly as a result of them.

Ireland’s signature brew, perhaps it’s most wellknown product, has recently hit the shelves and some pubs around the country in non-alcoholic form. Guinness 0.0 tastes very similar to the real thing and seems to be getting a good reception.

Non-alcoholic drinks are much more appetising for a longer session than minerals and they’re much less likely to leave you with issues like indigestion. They’re a lot better for your health than booze and for those who don’t like the pressure that comes with not drinking, nobody need ever know that you’re not sipping on the real thing.

Of course, alcohol has it’s place and this is not likely to change soon, if ever.

Why would it? Many people enjoy traditional beers, ciders, wines and spirits as part of a healthy lifestyle.

However, whatever your reason for not drinking, whether temporarily or permanently, it’s good to know there are other options out there that are full on flavour and convivial to a fun evening.

Science & Wellbeing THE intelligence of dogs impacts our daily lives arguably more than that of any other animal, whether we are training them to find explosives or simply a good place to poop (which is not in the house).

Dogs are unique in terms of animal intelligence.

As descendants of wolves, they have been evolving alongside humans for millennia, during which time they have gained cognitive abilities that have benefited our crossspecies partnership, writes bigthink.com.

In addition to forming deep emotional connections with people, dogs can understand human emotional vocalisations, the purpose of pointing, and (with extensive training) hundreds of words.

But despite all the research on canine intelligence, nobody has ever thought to investigate one of dogs’ most familiar and adored behaviours: the head tilt. Some have suggested that dogs tilt their heads to hear better or see beyond their snouts. Now, a study published in Animal Cognition offers a new explanation for head tilting: Dogs do it when they are processing relevant, meaningful information.

Gifted word learners For the study, the researchers conducted experiments involving 40 dogs divided into two groups. One group of dogs had proven consistently successful in learning the names of toys (and thus were called “gifted word learners”), while the other dogs were typical in their learning abilities.

“Only a few dogs can learn the name of objects (toys) even after a few exposures, while most (typical) dogs do not,” the researchers noted.

“We define the dogs that rapidly learn object labels as gifted word learner (GWL) dogs. We expected that, if head-tilting is related to processing meaningful or relevant auditory stimuli, dogs that learn object labels would tilt their heads more frequently upon hearing the toy’s name than typical dogs.”

Man’s best friend has ‘a-cute’ sense of hearing To test that hypothesis, the researchers had all dogs undergo a three-month training programme designed to teach them the names of two novel toys. Across three experiments, the researchers recorded the dogs’ reactions when their owners instructed them to retrieve one of the novel toys, which were laid among other toys on the floor in a separate room.

Findings The results revealed two main findings. First, only the GWL dogs were able to learn the

names of the new toys at levels above chance. But more importantly, the GWL dogs were significantly more likely than the typical group to tilt their heads upon hearing their owners say the name of a new toy.

“For every trial, the display (or absence) of head-tilt was noted from when the owner started to speak to the dog until when the dog left to go fetch a toy. We reported the direction of the movement and the position of the owner.”

“Therefore, we suggest that the difference in the dogs’ behaviour might be related

to hearing meaningful words (for the GWL dogs) and could be a sign of increased attention,” the researchers wrote.

“Possibly, head-tilts could also be related to making a crossmodal match in the dogs’ memory (e.g. name to a visual image) upon hearing the toy’s name.”

The results showed that each of the individual dogs in the GWL group consistently tilted its head in the same direction, but some of the dogs consistently chose right while the others chose left. This held true even when the owners

micro-electrodes implanted in the user’s brain.

The implant is just 4mm wide, and each of the tiny electrodes are 1.5mm long.

They penetrate the brain so they can both stimulate and monitor the electrical activity of neurons in the visual cortex, located within the larger cerebral cortex.

That stimulation allows the person to perceive the light patterns transmitted by the artificial retina.

Last year, a 1,000-electrode version of the setup was successfully tested on primates, although the animals were not blind. More recently, though, a team from Spain’s Miguel Hernández Universi-

ty tested the present version on a 57-year-old woman who had been completely blind for over 16 years. After a training period in which she learned to interpret images produced by the device, she was able to identify letters and the silhouettes of certain objects.

Importantly, it was found that the implant didn’t otherwise affect the function of the cerebral cortex, nor did it stimulate adjacent nontarget neurons. Additionally, the implant required a much lower electrical current than similar electrode arrays that are placed on the surface of the brain, potentially making it safer to use. The device

was removed six months after it was implanted.

A lot of work still needs to be done before the technology could be used on a practical level, so the scientists are now recruiting blind volunteers for further experiments. These could involve stimulating a greater number of neurons simultaneously, in order to produce more complex images.

A paper on the research, which was led by Prof. Eduardo Fernández Jover, was recently published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation. A somewhat similar system is being developed at Australia’s Monash University.

altered their positions while giving commands, suggesting that “the location of the sound source can be excluded as a confounding factor,” the researchers wrote.

The authors cannot say much yet about the intelligence of particular breeds.

All of the GWL dogs were border collies, but so were most of the typical dogs that could not learn the names of the new toys. The researchers noted that future studies could investigate the behavior with a larger sample size including various breeds.

SOMETHING is keeping cosmic rays out of the centre of the galaxy, writes New Scientist.

The Milky Way is suffused with a sea of high-energy particles spewed out by supernovae and other energetic astrophysical objects, but that expanse of cosmic rays seems to be unexpectedly blocked out of the very middle of the galaxy.

In a study published in Nature Commuications, Xiaoyuan Huang at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and his colleagues shared data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope on the distribution of cosmic rays near our galactic centre. They found that while the cosmic ray density was fairly constant in areas outside the very centre of the galaxy, it drastically dipped in the central molecular zone (CMZ), the area closest to the Milky Way’s middle.

This means that something is keeping the sea of cosmic rays out of the CMZ. “If there is no barrier, the cosmic ray sea component should also be present in the CMZ region,” said Huang.

“However, the data indicate that it is just the opposite and a barrier must be present.”

Most cosmic rays are charged particles, so a sufficiently strong magnetic field would be able to change their paths. “It is likely that stronger magnetic fields exist in the CMZ than outside, which may block cosmic rays from penetrating into the CMZ,” said Huang. “In addition, there may be magnetised winds, driven by the activity of the central supermassive black hole Sagittarius A, which also help stop particles from entering the CMZ.” This is similar to a process that occurs in our own solar system, in which relatively low-energy cosmic rays are blown away by both the magnetised solar wind and the relatively strong magnetic fields throughout the system.

It could also occur on even larger scales, which could affect any extragalactic cosmic rays trying to get into the Milky Way, the researchers report.

World’s fastest EV charger?

SWISS electronics giant ABB has launched a new electric car charging point, reports which it claims can charge any electric vehicle (EV) on the market in as little as 15 minutes.

“With governments around the world writing public policy that favours electric vehicles and charging networks to combat climate change, the demand for EV charging infrastructure, especially charging stations that are fast, convenient, and easy to operate is higher than ever,” Frank Muehlon, President of ABB’s E-mobility Division told Reuters.

The Terra 360 is a modular charger and works with dynamic power distribution. With a design that looks just like a petrol station pump and a charging time of just three minutes for a range of 62 miles (100 km), that’s

almost the same as you would spend filling up your car with petrol or diesel.

The process of charging is not complex either.

ABB wants to roll out largescale charging infrastructure to petrol stations, retail locations, convenience stores and even organisations.

The capability of charging four vehicles at a time without having to wait for the previous one to complete a charging session offers fleet owners the flexibility they have been seeking in electric cars.

The 360 in the Terra stands for 360kW of output which is way above the 250kW offered by Tesla’s Superchargers. ABB claims that its charger will “accelerate e-mobility adoption globally.”

The Terra 360 will be launched in Europe later this year.

Three years ago I had stayed at the splendid Steenberg Hotel, in the Western Cape, just 40 minutes out of Cape Town airport, where I had been waited upon hand and foot and wrapped in a sway of fine dining and wonderful wine. South Africa’s mother city offers many secret corners to explore, but my first visit to Steenberg afforded me yet another breathtaking outlook on the Western Cape and had left me, the selfish traveller that I am, wanting more.

Not wishing to push my luck, I needed an excuse to return to this splendid spot by the foot of the Stone Mountain.

A long-held ambition of renowned wine maker Graham Beck, Gorgeous (the debonair gentleman’s greeting to the ladies), is a stylish and delightful den, tastefully draped in Vivienne Westwood interiors.

And it’s the latest attraction at the estate in Cape Town’s Constantia, adjacent to Catharina’s restaurant where, naturally, we later found ourselves.

Complimented by delectable canapés created by Catharina’s celebrated chef, the diminutive and charming Garth Almazan, yours truly made his wanton way through a tasting of vintage and non-vintage champagnes, which, with one exception, epitomised elegance, finesse and subtle sophistication.

It is not every day that your wine is chosen by one of the world’s most famous men to mark a moment in history.

Twice, in fact.

has the ‘wow’ factor: the proportions are grand while the furniture is an arty blend of contemporary African with cosmopolitan style without compromising on the Cape traditions that underpin this estate.

For dinner I chose the Springbok tartare followed by Warthog. The springbok was infused with black truffles and was good, but the warthog was a taste sensation: pinkcentred soft fillet medallions on a slither of slow roasted underbelly, grilled prawns, exotic mushrooms with a red wine reduction.

No surprise then that Catharina’s has received both the American Express and Diners Club Award for Excellence.

For more relaxed and less fine fare there’s the open planned and high-ceilinged Bistro Sixteen 82 that’s ideal for lunch.

Staying here, you really do feel privileged and pampered, a combination of bygone pleasures with contemporary luxury.

They seem to have the balance just right, with their Cape Dutch antiques, old master paintings and tapestries.

My premier room was classically decorated; spacious, with two rooms, a minibar, patio with mountain view and a large bathroom and all manner of modern communications from Wi-Fi to an iPod docking station.

The Heritage Suites offer views to False Bay, while the Manor House rooms have their own lounges and all are furnished individually in a style reminiscent of the 17th century.

And there are spacious family suites for two adults and two children under 12, which offer great value The gardens are an invitation to stroll, a haven of havens, minutes from the Cape Town but miles from the world.

There is much to offer at Steenberg and in the surrounding countryside. For a day at the beach, check out Camp’s Bay with the trendiest beach strip on the peninsula or go visit the penguin colony at Boulders Beach, Simon’s Town. Or go walking along the Alphen Trail, one of the most popular of the green belt walks of the Constantia Valley.

The trail winds along the Diep River to the Constantiaberg Mountain and in places allows one to walk on either side of the river, with a number of bridge crossings.

It’s a beautiful walk filled with lush grass, trees, beautiful skies and the Le Sueur Meadow on the far end, towards Hohenort.

Stop off, and browse for that special ‘find’ at the popular Alphen Antiques Fair, which takes place at the Alphen Centre (opposite Constantia Village Shopping Centre) on the second and fourth Sunday of every month between 10am and 4pm.

A variety of items including jewellery, glass, ceramics, silver, toys, books, and paintings will be on sale.

But, back to being spoilt at Steenberg — there’s golf of course, where the 18hole championship course meanders through the vineyards, pine forests and gentle waterways.

With three different tees, the course can be enjoyed by champion and novice alike.

The par-three, not-so-short 14th hole, by the way, features the largest green in Africa at 76 metres in length.

Steenberg’s Golf Academy Package offers players a 4-night escape and three professional golf lessons on the course during your stay.

And for the ladies, there’s the Ginkgo Spa at Steenberg, with its earthy and relaxing ambience and five beautifullyfitted rooms offering a soothing indulgence with an energising vigour.

I’ll be back ... again!

All aboard for these travel tips from Irish Ferries vintage, with its crisp apple on the nose, that Barack Obama chose to celebrate his declaration to run for president, privately, with his wife Michelle, at the Blue Bird in Chicago.

Small wonder, though,

as Steenberg holds the distinction of being the oldest farm in the Constantia Valley, regarded as one of South Africa’s finest wine-growing regions.

It has to do with its sea-facing slopes and great granite ridges

and has led Steenberg, since Graham Beck acquired it in 2005, to garner a worldwide reputation.

The 62 hectares, sloping along the east side of the mountain, has a history going back to 1682 when the land was first in the hands of Catharina Ras, a feisty German woman who got through no less than five husbands in her lifetime.

The first wine was made here in 1695, and the cellars are still producing award-winning bottles today.

Graham Beck added the striking metallic sculptures of Edoardo Villa (the Henry Moore of South Africa) to the property but otherwise the buildings of the original farm and wine estate remain intact and have been converted into the luxury hotel, with rooms in the old manor house and surrounding buildings.

Who is Kilkenny’s Adult Learning STAR? AONTAS, the National Adult Learning Organisation is seeking nominations from adult learning projects in Kilkenny for the STAR Awards 2022.

The STAR Awards recognise outstanding work in adult learning and give projects the opportunity to promote their excellent work and

bring national recognition to learners, staff and organisations.

To highlight the diverse range of quality adult learning initiatives taking place across the country, AONTAS encourages STAR Award nominations in five categories for 2022: Health and Wellbeing, Learner Voice,

Social Inclusion, Sustainable Development through Education, Third-level Access and Engagement.

Two Special Awards will be given for Mitigating Educational Disadvantage through Innovation (during Covid-19), and a European Social Fund Special Recognition Award.

Children’s storybook teaches tools for life BENNETTSBRIDGE-based author, Lizzy Shortall, debuts her first children’s book, ‘Joy’s Playground’, tomorrow at Khans Books, Kilkenny.

The storybook aims to help young children learn how to navigate the stresses and strains of daily life as they follow the adventures of a little girl - Joy - and her animal friends, Jumpit the frog, Torti the tortoise and others, who

are having a very bad day.

They all work together to help their friends overcome the challenges they face through gratitude, mindfulness and self-belief.

She was experiencing a kind of separation anxiety over and over again, because during the lockdowns she naturally became used to being at home with me, her Daddy and little sister, Amy. “Children are like mini adults; they get stressed, anxious and they worry and that’s all normal. But it’s so impor-

tant to teach them the tools to cope. As parents, we need to acknowledge what’s happening to them and to help them learn the skills to deal with what they’re feeling.

“The story’s characters learn these tools, and as a family we use them to help Chloe, and Amy, through their moments of stress.”

The book is a real family affair. Chloe and Amy (four) helped Lizzy write the book.

“They picked the characters’ names and helped with the storyline. The characters have become household names at home, which is lovely!”

The book, which is beautifully illustrated by artist, Roberto Cruz, is written in a light hearted way with characters like Mike, the mixed-up monkey, who learns about mindfulness, Sasha the scared squirrel who learns about self-belief, and Geraldine the grumpy giraffe who learns about gratitude.

Lizzy’s husband, Connor is from Kilkenny and is the reason Dubliner Lizzy settled in the Marble county. Her first novel, ‘The Lotus and the Tiger’ was published in July.

Writing it was a cathartic exercise she said, which helped

her process the unresolved grief associated with the sudden death of her brother, Lar. Lizzy will be at Khans Books, James Street, Kilkenny tomorrow (Saturday) between 2.30pm and 4.30pm for the launch of ‘Joy’s Playground’ and will be signing copies of both her books. Kilkenny students should Calling all Kilkenny sports clubs Bin It! for virtual roadshow THE annual nationwide Bin It! programme has launched its new virtual Bin It! Hit Record Show, which is being rolled out to secondary schools across Kilkenny in a bid to educate and raise awareness of issues surrounding litter and the impact it can have on communities.

Bin It! Hit Record replaces the annual Bin It! programme national roadshow, which has been postponed in 2021 to ensure adherence to Covid-19 guidelines. The new virtual show and adaptable teaching

resource is being launched to 16 Secondary schools across the county.

The new teaching resource will enable teachers to provide lessons that focus on the science behind littering, the behaviour of littering, and what can be done to change people’s attitudes towards litter.

Bin It! is entirely funded and supported by the Gum Litter Taskforce (GLT).

Central to the free teaching resource is a series of short videos which follows main characters Doc and Taylor who will look at

four key areas of littering. Students will also have the opportunity to conduct practical experiments from the roadshow and experience what it is like to be a key decision maker when it comes to managing litter.

The Bin It! campaign has toured across the country since 2006, visiting 580 schools and engaging 64,092 students through actor-led workshops that educated and encouraged students around correct gum disposal. Last year, the campaign was postponed due to Covid-19.

COUNTY Kilkenny sports clubs should register their intent to apply for Texaco Support for Sport funding as soon as possible, organisers urge.

If your club is intending to apply for funding don’t let it miss out on the chance by being late to the game. Your club needs to register intent to apply ahead of the final December 31st application deadline.

Open to properly constituted and officially registered clubs throughout Ireland, the Texaco

Support for Sport scheme sets aside a €130,000 fund to be divided and distributed on a county-bycounty basis in twenty-six equal amounts of €5,000 to each successful club.

Its intended benefit will be shared amongst those clubs that put forward the most convincing rationale, the most deserving plan for its use.

Last year, the first year of the scheme, the successful Co. Kilkenny applicant to receive a €5,000 award was Kilkenny Hockey Club who used it to purchase

sports equipment for new starters.

Leading the adjudication process is Texaco Support for Sport ambassador, Irish rugby international and radio and TV broadcaster, Donncha O’Callaghan.

If ever a book deserved the award for ‘The Perfect Title’ surely that accolade must go to a new compilation of poetry Much More Than Words.

Indeed its very title describes comprehensively the diversity of the treasures to be discovered within its covers.

This volume of carefully crafted poems, interspersed with prose and enhanced with well-chosen

images, is the second collection produced by The Involvement Centre Kilkenny and the first in a joint venture with The Recovery College.

Paul Clifford Where Hope is a brighter future for all

The Snow in its Becoming On a wide expanse of frosted elements, January dawns Hiding secrets in the hardened earth.

I move through the ice-wind And part the whispering air, seeking.

A slow piercing of the snow in its becoming.

A river by my side is all crystals and whistles and Vanishing bridges of leaping light.

The Salmon of Knowledge emerging.

Trees bend to that river, prayerful, Their branches, whining.

I am put in mind of crouched washerwomen

Singing ancient secrets on the riverbank.

But their voices are veiled in silence, Hung at every turn of the head; A lace curtain hooked to a silver sky Concealing and revealing truths As it wimples in the frozen air.

A great, white longing opens inside of me.

Prompted by the ghostly grass, Each blade dawn-lit and breathing I lean my head backwards and exhale the entire sky.

Melodies, unheard, resound.

Truth drones in the distance.

There was a time when I had little hope or, dare I say it, no hope at all. The world I lived in seemed cold and uncaring.

It left me with a feeling of being unlovable and unwanted.

Those thoughts and emotions felt very real and they were real to me. It was only my perception of the world. The experiences that happened in my life had finally caught up with me, the pain the shame, the self doubt, the hurts. All the hurts, all the pain and hurt and anger over the years were starting to win the battle.

It brought a dark cloud over me. It fed me the negative messages and I devoured them all up like a beast. The more I fed on these messages the more and more my perception or my reality was changing. I was feeding off the negativity and could pick out events and back it all up by the experiences in my life.

I felt hopeless.

It was through people who truly cared for me and supported me that I made huge changes in my life.

It was a slow journey but with the compassion, care and love of others for me that hard shell that had surrounded my heart and my mind started to crack. I embraced the cracks. Every crack let in the light, let in the love and eventually I was overwhelmed with love and positive emotions. Now anytime I hear someone say ‘I’m cracking up’ I smile to myself. For me cracking up is beautiful, it’s letting the light in.

The darkness left me through watery drops flowing down my face. A release, a beautiful release. At times it was uncontrollable but beautiful when complete. A BEAUTIFUL RELEASE making room for the love and the life - the new life. The hope is my life. The hope is my love. Sometimes I think there is little difference between love and hope. For me they are two of the greatest gifts one could have. A life full of love and hope seems an extraordinary adventure and a life fulfilled.

People carried the hope for me when I had none. Please let me carry the hope for you. There is a saying when you return to work or back in control you are ‘back in the saddle’.

Well, just like that old song says, ‘Do you think I would leave you crying when there’s room on my horse for two’.

There is room in my heart for two. There is room in my heart for you. There is room in all our hearts to carry one another’s hope.

Hope is a better and brighter future for us all.

For the first time in history, Kilkenny city was hosting a high rank official from Romania. This didn’t just happen.

Friday 1st of October 2021 Twilight Community Group was invited to meet the ambassador at the Embassy on 7th of October 2021. A delegation from Twilight Community Group hit the road to Dublin and went to present respect and to promote the community from Kilkenny to the Romanian officials at the Embassy of Romania on Waterloo Road. After two hours of conversation the meeting concluded with ambassador’s

strong desire to come and visit Kilkenny. The delegation successfully convinced them that there is a strong community in Kilkenny with great initiatives under TCG’s motto: “Communities are stronger working together”. It was a memorable encounter. The Ambassador was impressed by the Twilight

Community Group’s achievements.

They arrived at Twilight Community Group’s International Cultural House at10.00am. After the appropriate introduction to the members of TCG the Ambassador and his wife met with the other guest: Colm Ahern the President and John Hurley the Chief Executive of the Kilkenny Chamber of Commerce, Emma Murtagh - European programme Manager The Wheel, Betty Dewberry - Chairperson of the Older People Council, Bortha Maria Woudsma-Public Participation Network, Salena Grace Manageress - Kilkenny Volunteer Centre.

Also present the past President of Areological Society Brendan Neary, who has a strong connection with Romania, spending much time there. Stefan D’Oyle a Romanian born, Irish adopted with his wife and adoptive parents were in the company of Ileana Conniff Baiescu the founder of ‘The never forgotten Romanian children’, and Kilkenny Garda officer Laura Dragoi.

There were connections made and strong links were established between all the parties present.

Stefan Cardare from The House of Pretzels offered the guests fresh from the oven Romania Pretzels (Covrigi) and Moldova shop had sent a beautiful selection of teas and cakes.

After interviews, conversations, and friendly encounters the moment of taking pictures next to the Irish, European and Romanian Flags was a fantastic moment. To see so much desire to be part of the mix and to see so many happy faces was an unimaginable site a few years ago. But there we were all under the same roof of Twilight Communities Group International Cultural House.

What an achievement…

That was not all, the day was about to take a turn to more diversity after the ambassador and his wife went to Langton’s House Hotel where they were accommodated. After lunch in Langton’s the ambassador and his wife stopped for a coffee and chat at The Burger Factory and more, visited Butler Gallery, Kilkenny Castle, Kilkenny Salt Therapy and The House of Pretzels. At, the invitation of the Florin Sima the owner of The Grapevine we stopped for supper and that was impressive and abundant.

The evening came to an end with a Jazz Concert where a Dublin based Romanian musician performed at Billy Byrne’s.

On returning to Dublin on Friday after an early morning meeting with Junior Minister Malcolm Noonan Minister for Heritage & Electoral Reform the Ambassador put the following comments out on the embassy’s website and Facebook page through his officials “Kilkenny was a remarkable experience. You can see how an open society works here, in which Romanians, Poles, Moroccans, Bengali & the African nations are well received, supported, and encouraged to set up their own business along the Irish people.”

As ambassador, Laurentiu Stefan was very impressed with Kilkenny’s Twilight Community Group, an association that focuses on diversity and promotes the social integration of those who seek a better life, far from their country, in Ireland. He met Martin Brennan again, the founder and soul of this association and his colleagues and many of those he collaborates with, such as those at Kilkenny Volunteer Centre.

There was also a good discussion with Colin Ahern and John Hurley, from the leadership of Kilkenny Chamber A great joy was to meet

Laura Dr goi, who works in the An Garda Síochána, Ileana Conniff B iescu who helps those who were adopted by Irish families in the 1990s to find their natural family. This is what happened to Stefan J Doyle Official, star today at XFactor, adopted in 1990 from Satu Mare by an Irish family.

A big thank you to Liviu Iftime, the main organizer of our ambassador trip through Kilkenny, where he met also Mihaela Radu, the team of the manager of Langton House Hotel in Kilkenny.

We want also to bring to your attention to the business of tefan Cadare the owner of The House Of Pretzels (pretzels are a tradition in Romania), Ionu Manole, who opened Burger factories & more in Ireland on the main street, and Florin Sima, who tried his luck (and succeeded) with a very popular Spanish restaurant called The Grapevine. Finally, Adina Dascalescu and Oana Oana slowly imposed in Kilkenny the healthy salt therapy (a part brought from Romania, from Praid) in their “saline” from Kilkenny Salt Therapy.

The evening was completed by a jazz concert of the band of the Irish bassist Ronan Guilfoyle. And again, Romanians make us proud. Aleka Potinga, a cellist from Romania, a music teacher at schools and universities in Dublin, is also the vocalist of Ronan Guilfoyle’s band.

What are our entitlements?

MANY citizens of the state do not realise the entitlements that they may be missing out on. Sometimes we must go and find out what it is we can claim now we are over 66.

The Department of Social Protection administers a group of allowances to which many people over 66 years are entitled. This week we will highlight the entitlements we may be able to claim in our senior years.

Below is a list of the main

entitlements for older people: The Household Benefits Package You qualify for the Household Benefits Package if you are aged 70 or over.

You may qualify for this at a younger age if you satisfy certain conditions. You should enquire about this to get further information.

Allowance 1 - The Electricity Allowance or Natural Gas Allowance or Cash Electricity Allowance or Cash Gas Allowance.

Allowance 2 - The Free Television Licence.

Telephone Support Allowance – The Telephone Support Allowance (TSA) is an extra weekly payment for people on certain social welfare payments who are also getting both the Living Alone Increase and the Fuel Allowance.

National Fuel Scheme – A Fuel Allowance is paid to people who are dependent on long-term social welfare payments and who are un-

able to provide for their own heating needs.

Medical Card – This is a means tested benefit unless you automatically qualify.

This is administered by the HSE. Free Travel – offered to all Irish residents, aged 66 or over. Some people may qualify for this at a younger age, if they are in receipt of a qualifying social welfare payment.

Carers Allowance and Carers Benefit – if a person

is receiving full-time care, their carer may qualify for a Carer’s Allowance or Carer’s Benefit. Carer’s Allowance is a means-tested payment, whereas Carer’s Benefit is based on PRSI contributions.

Treatment Benefit Scheme – The Treatment Benefit Scheme is run by the Department of Social Protection and provides dental, optical, and aural services to qualified people.

Living Alone Allowance – offered to those receiving qualifying social welfare payments living alone and 66 years or over. It is also available to people under age 66 who are receiving allowances such as disability allowance and who live alone.

Supplementary Welfare Allowance – Basic Supplementary Welfare Allowance is a weekly allowance paid to people who do not have enough income to meet their needs and those of their families.

Health services for older people - Older and most young chronically sick people can continue to live at home with HSE and family support. Information is available on moving from home to long stay care, should it become necessary or desirable.

Illness in your retirement- There are a range of payments and services available to support older people who become ill or acquire a disability. Informa-

tion is available on income supports, health care, housing, taxation and caring for someone else.

Home Support Service- The Home Support Service helps older people to continue living in their own homes when they need support to do so.

Fair Deal Scheme - People who move into registered nursing homes may receive financial support from the HSE under the Nursing Homes Support Scheme.

Regulation of residential care for older people - National quality standards are enforced in both public and private nursing homes by HIQA, the Health Information and Quality Authority.

Inspection reports are available from them.

Tax relief on nursing home fees and for dependent relatives - Tax relief is available on fees paid for nursing homes and for dependent relatives. Information on tax credits and how to apply for tax relief is available.

Boarding out of older people - Some Health Service Executive (HSE) Areas in Ireland operate a scheme where older people are boarded out in private homes. Find out about the rules that apply to these arrangements and how to apply.

HAT started out as a local youth club with cameras in 1991 in the heart of Kilkenny, has grown to become a national centre of excellence for young people interested in filmmaking and animation. Young Irish Film Makers are celebrating their 30th Anniversary as the national organisation responsible for training and supporting generations of young filmmakers and animators both locally in Kilkenny and across the country through several creative programmes.

Over the past 30 years, YIFM has worked with thousands of young people making films and become such an important part of Kilkenny’s creative heritage, as well as a key player in the national youth arts landscape. The starting point of many a creative career, YIFM are best known for their role in helping Cartoon Saloon set up their first studio on their premises (before they went on to winning awards and Oscar nominations).

Founder of YIFM, Mike Kelly (Creative Director) and Angela Walsh (Operations) helped so many young people over the decades who have

gone on to do amazing things on screen and stage.

YIFM Alumni Over the years Young Irish Film Makers have had the pleasure of working with some very talented young people.

Some of those grew up to do some amazing work in the creative industries.

The most famous being Tomm Moore & Ross Stewart from Cartoon Saloon who were members at YIFM, before returning after college to start their animation studio along with Nora Twomey & Paul Young within the walls of Young Irish Film Makers.

Oscar nominated director Tomm Moore says

this of the organisation: ‘Young Irish Film Makers inspired me to become a filmmaker. The easy going, yet disciplined, atmosphere introduced me to the joys of teamwork and storytelling at an early age. I have carried those lessons through my whole career.’

Other YIFM alumni include: Rory Fleck Byrne began his acting career with YIFM taking part in numerous film making projects and has starred in movies with Pierce Brosnan & Jackie Chan in “The Foreigner” Laura Gaynor attended the National Youth Film School, went on to study film at IADT and is now

working for the BBC as a producer.

Ferdia Shaw is one of our younger members who has just recently signed up with Disney to play Artemis Fowl in a series of movies alongside Dame Judy Dench and directed

by Kenneth Branagh.

The celebrations involved a trip down memory lane for YIFM Friends, Alumni and many people who have worked with them over the past 30 Years. Those attending enjoyed film screenings from the archive, photo galleries, a display of old costumes and a wander through the studios and workshops at their national headquarters here in Kilkenny.

‘Young Irish Film Makers are entering a new era as it turns 30,’ says Garry McHugh (Director of YIFM) ‘and we are now working with almost 2000 young people each year nationwide. Training them in the skills they need to make films, produce animation and kick start a career in the screen industry. With amazing support from funders like Kilkenny Carlow ETB, the Arts Council, Screen Ireland and the Department of Children, Equality, Integration, Disability and Youth, they are looking forward to many exciting years ahead working with young people all over Ireland and beyond.’

OVER the past number of weeks, the Twilight community Group have been talking to many nationalities and their Ambassadors to Ireland as we continue to promote Integration, inclusion, and solidarity across all communities.

In the mix to-date have been Ambassadors HE Anna Sochańska, Poland, HE Lahcen Mahraoui , Morocco and HE laurenţiu-mihai ştefan

Romania. The Romanian Ambassador and his wife were guests of the Twilight Group on November 4th last as he visited their International cultural House and the group’s new Media and Training Centre.

Part of the interviews were to get to know the diplomats, the person behind the title and their pastimes and hobbies.

The Ambassador of Poland to Ireland Anna Sochańska has been awarded the 2021 World Bicycle Day of the United Nations Award for promoting “Bicycle Diplomacy “and for innovative and enthusiastic

engagement in the promotion of cycling for all.

We are truly honoured and wish to thank Professor Leszek Jan Sibilski for this award and his efforts to promote cycling as a sustainable means of transport.

You might recall the art competition for children called “Cycling is My Superpower “which we organised to celebrate Children’s Day in early June?

The competition winner Patryk from Waterford - has just received the bike of his dreams as the main prize and is absolutely loving it!

As all our world leaders meet and talk about how we can reduce our greenhouse gases, promote public transport and other means which will reduce our carbon footprint and promote green travel in Glasgow. Just across the Irish sea we have an ambassador who is out and about promoting the greenest and truly sustainable way to travel, the bike. So, our ambassador has been awarded the 2021 World Bicycle Day of the United Nations Award for promoting “Bicycle Diplomacy!

But where did the Bike come from?

A mode of transport that is

over two centuries old. The first bicycle called Velocipede was built by the French nobleman Comte de Sivrac in 1791 . It had two wheels, a saddle and was foot powered.

Another bicycle was invented in 1817 in Germany by Baron von Drais. It was made of wood and had a steerable front wheel without a pedal.

This bicycle was first exhibited in Paris. A Scottish blacksmith named Kirkpatrick Macmillan made the first mechanical bicycle in1839.

It was driven by pressing down the treadles that moved up and down and turned the back wheel. He was born in Coathill, Scotland in the year 1812. Born to a blacksmith

he tried many jobs but finally settled down with his father.

On seeing someone ride velocipede he decided to make one for himself and ended making a tremendous change by adding paddles to it.

In England, in the year 1879 Henry John Lawson invented the first rear chain drive bicycle.

In 1888 John Dunlop gave pneumatic tyres and made the ride more comfortable and easier. There are about a billion bicycles in the world and its production is more than that of cars.

So as one song says “There are two million bicycles in Beijing” or as we say in Ireland “On Yer Bike”

Community Group

COP ‘OUT’ 26 NOW with great fanfare and TV and print media worldwide we were told that our world leaders have taken on the battle to save Humanity form Humanity itself! Ironic really.

The event was Cop 26 in Glasgow. They came from all over the world on trains, planes, and automobiles. A Presidential motorcade of at least 20 vehicles was spotted heading into Glasgow as President Biden arrived for COP26 as a military helicopter flew overhead. Boris Johnson went back to his seat of power in Downing Street from the Cop26 climate conference on a private plane rather than the train after spending two days warning world leaders to reduce their emissions. The British prime minister left himself open to accusations of hypocrisy after urging other countries to do everything possible to pledge lower emissions and warning that they would be judged by their children if they fail to act. You only had to wait till the next day’s paper Boris So, when we see our ‘Powerful’ leaders with their hands on the wheels of the enormous polluting

economies of the world telling us ‘We Must Change Our ways’ are they really telling us ‘You Must Change Your Ways’ in the now to typical ‘Do what I say not what I do’.

As developing countries agree to transition away from coal in the 2040s “or as soon as possible thereafter”, in the pledge, in an even bigger sign of hypocrisy, The US, the world’s third-largest coal consumer, was not among a list of signatories to the pledge. Now this is despite the Biden administration’s goal of carbon-free electricity by 2035. But unfortunately, as Washington’s protracted negotiations over the infrastructure proposals continue, analysts say the Biden administration is avoiding taking a clear stand on coal in Glasgow, to avoid upsetting senators from coaldependent states. So, what does this really tell us? When it comes to Human Life saving action or Political agenda, lifesaving action, saving one’s political skin is more important than saving the Planet. We won’t have to cross the Irish seas or further afield across the Atlantic to see this

in action but the same applies to our Irish politicians. When chickens of the agreements come home to roost, or should we say when the cattle come home to the milking parlour, does anyone disagree that Michael, Leo, and even Eamon, Oh and don’t let me forget the Merchants of the Land of Milk and Honey Mary Lou’s army will do the same.

We have the leaders agreeing long term goals when their life’s targets are only based on a maximum of 5-year cycle.

For some it’s canvasing for re-election day after they take office!

The only way any targets agreed at Cop 26 or the Paris Accord before will ever be reached is if there is another body of ‘Guardians of the Universe’ police force who have the power to hold the signatures of the accords to account. Now that’s not the Greta Tintin Eleonora Ernman Thunberg the Swedish environmental activist and her band of eco-friendly warriors.

Creamy, vibrant and full of flavour, this Keralan fish curry dish is a great way of incorporating fresh and nutritious ingredients into your cooking. It’s ready in 35 minutes, perfect for impatient hungry mouths.

Prep: 15 mins Cook: 20 mins Serves 4 Ingredients • 300g basmati rice • 1 tbsp sunflower or vegetable oil • 2 large onions, sliced • 2 garlic cloves, chopped • 450g tomatoes, cut into chunks • 3 tbsp tikka curry paste • 400g can coconut milk • 4 skinless, boneless pollock fillets (about 150g/51/2oz each), or other sustainable white fish, cut into 4cm/11/2in chunks • ½ small pack coriander, roughly chopped

Method STEP 1 Put a large saucepan of water on to boil and cook the rice following pack instructions.

Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large, wide saucepan over a medium heat and add the onions. Cook for 5-10 mins until softened and starting to colour. Add the garlic and tomatoes, and fry for 2 mins.

Add the curry paste, fry for 2 mins more, then pour in the coconut milk and bring to the boil.

Hot chocolate is glorious on its own, especially on a cool and crisp evening, but, include it in one of these hot cocktail recipes and you’ll get a double comfort hit via the warm chocolate and booze.

Hot chocolate cocktail recipes are more than just throwing in a splash of Bailey’s or dark rum in your mug of instant cocoa; you deserve something even better.

Think complimentary flavours like coconut and chocolate as well as suitable spirits like rum and fruity liqueurs.

Hot chocolate may seem like a kid thing (and drinking it should, by all means, make you feel like one), but you can give it the bona fide adult treatment in style. Get the marshmallows ready and stoke the fire, these are the best hot chocolate cocktails to take the sting out of the cold.

COCONUT HOT CHOCOLATE This blend uses white chocolate as its base. If that sounds tooth-numbingly sweet, take note, a splash of coconut rum and a touch of dark chocolate with luscious whole milk make it perfectly balanced.

Ingredients • 150ml whole milk • 25g white chocolate, chopped • 25ml coconut-flavoured rum (we used Malibu) • 1 tsp finely grated dark chocolate • 1 tsp coconut flakes, toasted (optional) Method STEP 1 Pour the milk into a small pan and then place over a medium heat until simmering, stirring so it doesn’t scorch. Remove the pan from the heat then add the white chocolate and stir. Once the chocolate has melted, place the pan back on the heat to warm through. Add the coconut-flavoured rum and pour into a mug.

STEP 2 Garnish with the dark chocolate and a few toasted coconut flakes if you like.

SALTED CARAMEL RUM HOT CHOCOLATE This alcoholic blend is made with dulce de leche - a thick caramel. Add salt to your liking then serve up a mug of pure boozy bliss.

STEP 2 Add the fish to the pan and simmer gently for 5-8 mins until just cooked through. Turn off the heat.

Sprinkle the coriander over the curry and serve with the rice.

Ingredients • 25ml dark rum • 2 tsp dulce de leche or thick caramel • 150ml whole milk • 50g milk chocolate, chopped

Hot Choc-tail recipes

Prep Time: 5 minutes Ingredients • 1/2 cup elderberry juice (available in health-food stores) • 1 large grapefruit or 1 large orange, juiced • 1 cup frozen blueberries • 1/2 cup frozen raspberries • 1/2 cup frozen mango • 1 cup ice cubes Method Put all the ingredients into a blender.

Pulse until smooth. Serve.

Method STEP 1 In a small bowl, mix together the rum and the dulce de leche until smooth then set aside.

STEP 2 Warm the milk in a saucepan over a medium heat until simmering. Remove from the heat and add the chocolate and stir until melted. Pop the pan back on the heat until warm then add the rum mixture and a pinch of flaky sea salt. Pour into a mug and serve.

CHOCORANGE HOT CHOCOLATE Enjoy the heavenly combination of citrus and chocolate in sumptuous drink form by whipping up this double cream-based dream.

Ingredients • 150ml milk • 50ml double cream • zest of 0.5 orange • 50g dark chocolate, chopped • 25ml orange liqueur Method STEP 1 Heat the milk, cream and orange zest together in a saucepan until simmering then remove from the heat and pour through a sieve into a jug to remove the orange zest. Pour the infused milk mixture back into the pan and add the chocolate, stirring until the chocolate has melted and is really smooth.

STEP 2 Put the pan back on the heat to warm through then add the orange liqueur. Pour into a mug and serve.

This propulsive, stylish comedy thriller is based on real-life crimes, which makes it all the more riveting. I Care a Lot stars a cooler than ever Rosamund Pike as Marla Grayson, a con artist who has figured out a way to exploit old people and take their assets by becoming their legal guardians. Crime lords, devoted criminal girlfriends and aviator sunglasses feature in this rip-roaring flick with a fascinating morally ambiguous lead character.

A psychological thriller that dives deep into the surreal. I’m Thinking of Ending Things definitely won’t be for everyone, but it connects you to the frustrations of the young woman (Jessie Buckley) at its heart, who grapples with breaking off her seven-week-relationship with her boyfriend Jake (Jesse Plemons).

While it overstays its welcome a little, I’m Thinking of Ending Things always keeps you on your toes, with atmospheric cinematography and strong performances from Toni Collette and David Thewlis as Jake’s fairly odd parents.

JAMES BOND was only released in the cinema just over a month ago but Daniel Craig’s final movie, No Time To Die, hit streaming services in the US this week.

The newest James Bond film No Time To Die hit cinemas on September 29 after years of multiple delays caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The film has been a huge

success, spending weeks at the top of the box office charts. It is as of yet unclear whether this digital release is occurring worldwide, or just for the US. No Time To Die was internationally distributed by Universal, which has a “31day theatrical exclusivity window for all its films”, according to the publication.

This means that the film

may have always been due to hit the small screens after those 31 days were up.

This is extremely exciting for Bond fans who will be able to watch their new favourite 007 film again from the comfort of their own home.

The release of No Time To Die also comes at an opportune time, as it apparently risks being knocked

off the box office top spot by an upcoming 1980s movie reboot.

Data from Mobilewins suggests Ghostbusters: Afterlife will be even more popular than No Time To Die. With new Video On Demand sales counting towards the box office, it may yet retain its top spot for another few weeks.

Joe Exotic returns to Netflix A SECOND season of the hugely popular documentary series, Tiger King 2, is heading to Netflix very soon.

Tiger King 2 is again directed by Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin and effectvely picks up where the last season left off. It’s not without controversy - not only is the Tiger King himself, Joe Exotic, currently in jail serving time for hiring hitmen to kill rival Carole Baskin, Baskin herself is suing Netflix.

She claims the company doesn’t have permission to use footage of her in Tiger King 2, having only signed release forms for the first series.

It sure sounds like season 2 will be just as surprising and

event-filled as before, therefore. Here’s everything you need to know about it so far: RELEASE DATE Tiger King 2 will premiere on Wednesday, November 17, 2021.

HOW TO WATCH Tiger King 2 is a Netflix exclusive, so you will need to be a Netflix subscriber to watch it.

The previous series was rated 15 (in the UK), so we’d expect the same again.

While unconfirmed, it is expected that Tiger King 2 will have eight episodes.

The first series - Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness - originally had 7, but an eighth episode was added

during the first lockdown of the pandemic. It featured interiews with some of those who appeared in the docuseries.

From the trailer it is clear

that the first series has a big impact on the sequel. It has seemingly been filmed after the phenomenon began.

Variety reports that at least one person is not happy with it, however. Carole Baskin is said to be in the process of suing Netflix over her appearance in Tiger King 2.

She claims that she only ever signed release documents for the first series. Whether that will delay its release is unknown. Netflix is yet to respond to her allegations.

You can also catch up on the events in the first series in a handy, bite-sized highlights package made by the streaming giant.

Two movies named The Call came out in 2020. Watch this South Korean one, a time travel thriller revolving around, yep, a phone call.

Twentyeight- year-old Seo-yeon finds a phone buried in a closet in her childhood home. It rings, and the caller, it turns out, is living in the same house 20 years earlier. Twists right up to the final moment, plus a wild cat-and-mouse chase that alters the past and present make this a must-watch.

If you’ve had a bad day, this might be the movie for you. When the police refuse to help with a robbery, nursing assistant Ruth and her weird neighbour Tony take matters into their own hands. I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore spots the idiosyncrasies of everyday life, before escalating its story into dark places with even darker humour.

With a touch of Coen Brothers’ flair, its perfectly packed 96 minutes will leave you surprisingly emotional.

You’ll be spending a lot of time with Mélanie Laurent (Inglorious Basterds) in this contained sci-fi thriller. Inside a coffin-like medical cryo unit, Laurent’s Elizabeth Hansen wakes up to find that she’s trapped, running out of oxygen and can’t remember why she’s there.

Claustrophobic and high on tension, Oxygen is a solid sci-fi entry, efficient and satisfying, without breaking any ground.

SENIOR FOOTBALL Clara had a hard earned one point win over host club the Village in Larchfield on Saturday afternoon. On their first attack right from the throw in Tom Ryan got his fist to a shot which was dropping short and the ball ended up in the Village net. This was to prove a crucial score on a day when scores were hard come by in the inclement conditions. The Villge went on to dominate the rest of the quarter, but only had two pointed frees

by Cian Kenny to show for their efforts at the first water break.

Tommy Walton opened the second quarter with a goal for the hosts but Alan Coleman replied with a good point for Clara. A Cian Kenny point from play was sandwiched between two similar efforts from Clara’s Sean O Shea, both of which were goal attempts that were deflected over by vigilant Village net minder Ryan Scanlon. This left the half time score at 1-3 each.

Remarkably the entire second half only profuced one score as conditions deteriorated badly.

This arrived in the third quarter through a James Nolan “mark” in the third quarter after a good catch

by James. Both teams missed numerous chances thereafter, with the Village in particular rueing the lack of a consistent free taker. Jack Langton, who had swapped his full back position at half time with Brian Prendergast in goals, made a good late save to deny the Village. Even with the loss of David Langton late in the game to a black card the Clara men held out with some resolute defending to advance to the next round.

U19 HURLING Clara lost their opening game to an older John

Lockes team in Callan on Sunday. The Callan boys were on top from the word go and were well worth their 0-12 to 1-2 half time lead. All of Clara’s scores had come from placed balls by Conor Cody, the goal coming from a penalty following a foul on the busy Boru Bergin.

Clara opened the second half with two points from Conor Cody from play, and when half time substitute Ned Langton goaled it was back to a two point game, with Clara now playing with the breeze. However Callan responded by scoring 1-3, all from play, to surge ahead again. Clara got the next three points through Conor Cody (2) and Harry Boyle, but a Callan free left the score at 1-16 to 2-7 at the second water break.

Callan put this game to bed with the first four points of the final quarter and the game petered out as a contest. Clara scored the last four points of the game to give the scoreboard a respectable look, but in truth they were no match for the Callan lads on the day. Overall they will know that much higher intensity levels will be needed the next day to have any chance of victory.

COUNTY FINAL LOSS Hard luck to Clara N.S. teacher Paddy Deegan, who found himself on the losing O Loughlins side against four in a row County Champions Ballyhale Shamrocks on Sunday in Nowlan Park. Paddy did everything in his power to help his team to victory and finished his day with 2-3 from play, but it was not enough against a great Ballyhale team.

SYMPATHY There was deep sorrow in Urlingford last Friday when the news broke of the passing of Martin Burke, RIP.

Martin, 44 Chapelfield, Urlingford, passed away on November 5, tragically, as a result of an accident.

Deeply regretted by his heartbroken parents Michael and Deborah, sister Emma, grandparents Angela, John and Marie, great-grandfather Paddy, Aunt Lisa, Uncle Keith, nephew Damien, niece Taylor, relatives and a wide circle of friends.

St Joseph’s Home chairman, Philip Brennan, was presented recently with a cheque for €4,500 from Dunnamaggin Gymkhana. The gymkhana was a great success, given the Covid times, and raised a total of €9,000 for local charities, St Joseph’s Home and Carlow Kilkenny Homecare Team. In his words of thanks Philip thanked the gymkhana for all of their charitable donations over the last 50 years of its existence and over the many years has contributed hugely to local charities. St Joseph’s in the current difficult times has also incurred extra expenses on the upgrade of its gas heating system so the money was particularly appreciated by St Joseph’s Home. At the last board meeting of St Josephs, Philip Brennan’s term of office has expired and Denise Kerwin was unanimously agreed as the new Chairperson. In his closing remarks Philip Brennan thanked the board for their support and help since he became chairperson after the untimely death of Fr. Flavin. There have been challenging times in the last 3 years, with both Covid and financial, but due to good management and support St Josephs has emerged largely unscathed from these. No doubt there will be challenges going forward but with proper help and support St Josephs will continue to be a beacon of light in the parish.

Heidi Ryan, Mia Kennedy, Amelia Fox, Laura Beatty and Emer Callaghan ran their best and their team finished eight. The County Team came fourth which will qualify some of the girls for the All- Ireland due to be held in Gowran in early December.

U11 Boys What a race for Kilkenny in the Boys U11, Aaron Carrigan led for most of the race. He was challenged

by KCH with 100m to go but Aaron was not going to settle for silver and he returned the attack and finished first with sheer determination. The Kilkenny County Team won silver with a super performance from MJ Carroll finishing in 23rd.

Gowran had another seven boys (Milo Geraghty, David Carroll, Rory Treacy, Sean Farrell, Oisin Doyle, Ross Hutton and Milo Ahern) in this race and they all had a good run. Well done to some of the boys competing for the first time in Leinster.

U13 Girls Great run from Kate Hayden who finished just outside the top twelve in eighteenth position. Orlaith Carroll, Eve Doyle, Daisy Coomey and Anna Kelsey completed the team which finished tenth overall.

U13 Boys Gold Club Team The boys U13 were impressive winning Gold Club and County.

Conor Carroll leading the way for the Gowran boys with a strong and measured race. Robert Coogan tucked in behind his team mate and followed through. Conor calmly picked off the other athletes and made his way into 4th position. He was still fighting all the way towards the finish line. Robert just seconds behind in 6th. The boys had a strong team coming

in behind them with Thomas Carroll, Joe Hayes, Darragh Carroll and Micheal O’Keeffe.

U15 Girls Very strong running from Lucy Coomey and Hazel Coogan who both contributed to the county team which finished second. Alex Brennan and Kate Kelly completed the team which came eight overall.

U15 Boys Trio Michael Holland, James Kelsey and Kealan Barcoe all did their best in a very tough 3500m.

U17 Girls Rachel O’Neill had a great run (running up in age), finishing thirty fourth in a gruelling 4000m U17 Boys Billy Coogan had a fantastic run finishing second in the U17 boys. Billy’s season has been impeccable. He added a gold to his silver medal when the County finished in first position.

U19 Boys Matthew Holland had a super performance and finish 6th in the U19 Boys 6000m.

UNDER NINTEENS SUFFER DOUBLE HEARTBREAK U-19 Roinn B Championship QuarterFinal Young Irelands Gowran 2-15 Piltown 2-16 After Extra-Time The U-19 Hurlers suffered Heartbreak both at the end of normal time and in extratime, as they were denied

by Piltown in the U-19 Roinn B Championship Quarter-Final on Sunday morning.

A contest that was mostly low scoring and that took a long time to get going saw Piltown lead 0-5 to 0-4 at half-time, before they stretched the advantage to open up a four point lead as they led 0-9 to 0-5 during the third quarter.

The Gowran men finally came to life and a well taken goal from Ben Phelan brought the margin back to a solitary point, before points either side of the water break pushed Piltown’s lead out to three points 0-11 to 1-5.

However, Young Irelands conjured up another goal courtesy of a superbly taken effort from Killian Carey to draw the sides level (2-5 to 0-11), and buoyed on by that goal, they sprung to life adding further points from Padraig Naddy, Tommy Phelan and a long distance free by centre back Gavin Manning 2-8 to 0-11.

Victory appeared to be theirs but there was a twist to the tale, and a long range free by Piltown ended up with a goal via a goalmouth scramble, and extra-time beckoned.

The Gowran men responded strongly during the first period of extratime and two points each from both goal scorers Ben Phelan and Killian Carey put them 2-12 to 1-12 ahead approaching half time of extra time.

Piltown thought displayed a never say die attitude when it was needed most, and a levelling goal from a penalty restored parity 2-12 each.

Young Irelands started the Second Period of ExtraTime strongly & further points from Ben Phelan and Killian Carey along with Jimmy Lennon put them two points ahead entering the closing five minutes 2-15 to 2-13.

However, Piltown refused to lie down, and they finished strongest with three unanswered points to snatch victory.

The Gowran men were best served by the brilliance of the outstanding Bobby Brennan and Cathal Darcy in defence, while Gavin Manning had a good solid game also.

The attacking division only got going from late in normal time with Killian Carey and Ben Phelan leading the way in extra time, but prior to that they struggled to make a meaningful impact.

Young Irelands will play Tullogher-Rosbercon in the Shield Semi-Final on Saturday Afternoon in Gowran at 1.30pm.

Shamrocks of Ballyhale are Kilkenny Senior Hurling Champions for the FOURTH year running.

James O’Connor’s men were made to work hard over the course of the 60-odd minutes, and at times it wasn’t all plain sailing.

Following their semi-final win over the Village, Shamrocks started the showpiece with Eoin Reid at corner forward and Kevin Mullen at corner back.

O’Loughlin’s gave the impressive Robbie Buckley a starting berth following his showing against Tullaroan.

From the throw-in Shamrocks went on the offensive. County Captain Adrian Mullan played a lovely pass to Colin Fennelly, who ran bared down on the O’Loughlin’s goal, only to be held up by some last ditch defending, which resulted in a ‘65 to the champions. TJ stepped up and fired his first shot of the day between the posts to open the scoring in front of the raucous crowd in attendance.

Andy Comerford’s charges responded. Their championship top scorer, Mark Bergin tried for a point, but it took a touch of a Shamrocks player, and went behind for a ‘65. From this, Bergin’s effort dropped short, was missed by Richie Reid and deflected off keeper Dean Mason for another ‘65. Bergin would make no mistake from this placed ball. The sides were level on 4 minutes.

After some scrappy play, O’Loughlin’s left-half back Conor Heary struck a majestic long-range score, to continue his cracking form this season, one which see him elevated to gain county honours in the spring.

In the next move, Shamrocks moved the ball to Brian Cody who struck a great point from out the field, to tie the game after 7 minutes.

The first of six green flags would be raised less than a minute later.

A great sideline cut from deep inside the O’Loughlin’s half was misjudged by Joey Holden. The ball broke to the ever-alert Robbie Buckley who darted through the gap, before off-loading to Owen Wall.

The No. 13 took the pass before cutting inside his marker and blasted beyond Dean Mason to the net, giving his side a 3-point lead early on.

O’Loughlin’s looked ravenous, they hunted in packs, anything that moved they pounced on.

They won a sideline cut, which inspirational county-star Paddy Deegan attended to. Deegan played it short, before collecting the return pass and firing a lovely point from far-out on the right touchline.

The Gaels smelt blood.

Ballyhale needed to settle. Adrian Mullen then found Colin Fennelly, who despite the attentions of a couple of opposition players slipped the pass back to Mullen, who fired over the bar to reduce the deficit.

From the next play, Joey Holden burst out from the back and found the classy Ronan Corcoran in space. The rangy midfielder laid the ball off to Joe Cuddihy who took a lovely point to keep his side in touch.

Huw Lawlor then intercepted a pass and strode forward before passing to Mark Bergin. Bergin tried to race clear of the Shamrocks players in attendance, but as he went to shoot, referee Owen Beehan, adjudged Adrian Mullen to have pulled his arm. The accurate Bergin punished the foul and left three between the sides again. Referee Beehan then awarded Ballyhale a free over on the far sideline, which TJ duly knocked over the leave his side two points down at the first water break.

O’Loughlin’s would have been happy enough, 2 ahead at the end of the first period. They were winning most of the 50/50 exchanges and first to every breaking ball.

When play resumed, the city side won another sideline cut. In a carbon copy of an earlier one, No.14 Paddy Deegan went short to Robbie Buckley, who returned the pass and again Deegan fired over from an acute angle. The crowd roared. Deegan reveled in it.

A couple of minutes later, Richie Reid hit a low pass to the onrunning Colin Fennelly. As the full-forward tried to gather possession, O’Loughlin’s full-back, Forristal was harshly blown for what appeared to be a soft enough foul. Tj struck it over to bring it back to a 2-point game.

From the puck-out Paddy Deegan, who had roamed deeper out the field took a fine pass from David Fogarty, who was winning his battle with Eoin Reid. Deegan scanned ahead and saw a cross-field run by

Tj Reid then sprung from a posse of players before popping a pass to Richie on half-way, who made no mistake with a fine point. the city side’s keeper Murphy, then drove the ball far into Shamrocks territory. Owen Wall gathered before passing to Mark Bergin who could only shoot to the side netting.

Fennelly, dropped a little deeper in a bid to escape the clutches of Forristal, won possession and passed to the forward running Ronan Corcoran, who took a few steps and slotted over.

Paddy Deegan then did likewise. He gathered possession from the puck-out before cutting in from the right touchline to fire over, once the angle was right.

In one of many little scrappy passages of play, Robbie Buckley collected the ball and tried to make headway, before being halted illegally by Brian Cody. Mark Bergin, again made the opposition pay as he swung over the free, the Gaels a goal to the good again.

Shamrocks then played a long ball in the direction of Eoin Cody, who had been struggling to get into the game.

Cody Fielded the ball brilliantly, despite being held round the neck by his nearest marker, this was rightly blown up and TJ dispatched the free between the sticks.

Conor Heary then showed again, why many think he’s county material. Heary to possession, bounced off a couple of Shamrocks players before passing to Robbie Buckley. Eoin O’Shea then took over before popping the ball back to Heary, who drove a magnificent shot over the bar, from tight out on the touchline.

Some poor play saw a wayward cross-field pass make its way to the deadly Bergin, who dummied his marker, before firing between the posts.

O’Loughlin’s now led by four and had the champions rattled.

went in search of another score. The ball was played to Paddy Deegan who when charging forward took a blow to the head area from Kevin Mullen’s Hurl. Luckily for Ballyhale, referee Beehan didn’t even see it as a foul and play continued.

Mark Bergin then snapped up possession on the break and advanced before stroking over a nice point to put his team 5 up.

Shamrocks needed to hit back before the interval and they did. First up was TJ. He was found with a lovely pass from Ronan Corcoran and was never missing. Then just before the short whistle, Darragh Corcoran raced forward on the left-wing before striking a lovely point on the run.

Fenian’s ref, Beehan blew for half-time. O’Loughlin’s led by 3 points, 1-11 to 0-11, but it could have been so much better, had even half of their eight wides gone over. interestingly, they only had four scorers on the board, Shamrocks had seven.

When the second half got underway, Shamrocks searched for a score. Like the first period, they would open the scoring, thanks to TJ, who pointed from a free deep in his own half. The county veteran, then showed he is human, when his next attempt from play was just pulled wide. You could sense

As both sides tried to win possession, Jack Nolan emerged with the ball and headed for goal, before slipping a nice pass to Paddy Deegan who blasted to the net. The sides were level again. The crowd were being treated to a great county final.

Huw Lawlor then charged forward before passing to Deegan who in turn found the tricky Wall, who batted the ball over the bar to put his side back into the lead at the second water break.

O’Loughlin’s manager, Comerford was very animated during the short interval... he knew his side were in a great place.

Play resumed. Ballyhale centre –back, Richie Reid took a great catch before finding Joe Cuddihy. His lovely batted pass found the strong running Ronan Corcoran in lots of space on the left and he fired over another top score.

by Loughnane saw him find Deegan who finished from a tight angle to the net. In the aftermath of the goal, Loughnane and Dean Mason were involved in a heated exchange, some would say handbags. The sub also through the ball at a defender before leaving the scene of the crime. Referee Beehan consulted with his umpires before issuing Loughnane with a red card.

In the closing seconds, O’Loughlin’s tried again to breach the Ballyhale net, but Jordan Molloy’s effort was a little too strong and sailed over the bar. Their race was run. Ballyhale had won. Next up – Carlow champions, Mount Leinster Rangers in two weeks’ time. The battle for Leinster continues.

A County final befitting of Hurling’s most decorated county. Thankfully, this year the seats weren’t empty. The watching faithful were treated to a real spectacle. It was a game that swung both ways, O’Loughlin’s up by 5, Shamrocks 3 ahead, a drawn game.

Andy Comerford will have been very proud of his team’s effort on the day, but will no doubt rue the wide count and a very ‘old school’ approach to refereeing from Fenians clubman Owen Beehan.

On another day, in another county, more fouls would have been awarded. Kevin Mullen may have left the stage early when his hurl met the face of Paddy Deegan. Aside from that, I enjoyed watching two supremely talented sides go at it. The ref also appeared to enjoy the cut and thrust, the contact, the skirmishes. Like I say - ‘old school’.

Let’s talk about Paddy Deegan. Anyone unfamiliar with the inter-county defender, would have thought this was a seasoned inter-county forward at work. Make no mistake about it, Deegan is an exceptional hurler, whatever the position. His partnership with corner forward Owen Wall is a joy to watch. Wall, another who must be on the brink of senior county game time. His goal was delightful.

Huw Lawlor also excelled. The man on his left, Conor Heary – capped a fine season with a couple of stunning points, and also did a decent job on Adrian Mullen.

Now to the winners, the 4-in-a-row boys from Ballyhale. Panic never set in. Even when 4 or 5 points down, they kept the faith and executed their manager, James O’Connor’s plan perfectly. TJ again, led the way, in terms of scoring and leading by example. He often roamed deep inside his own half to help secure possession. Finishing the day with 0-9, TJ was once again unflappable, taking the hits as he bounced off players around the pitch.

Richie Reid was a dominant presence at No.6. protecting the area in front of his full-back line with an astute presence. In front of him were Messrs. Brian Cody and TG4’s man of the match Ronan Corcoran.

Cody hit two wonderful long-range points and with his partner, got through a lot of the ‘dirty work’. Ronan Corcoran was again, majestic. He was everywhere, and weighed in with 3 classy scores. The watching Mr. B Cody will no doubt have noted the developing influence Corcoran is on this Ballyhale machine.

Joe Cuddihy stepped up again and finished with 1-1, as did Adrian Mullen who isn’t shy of putting himself about!

The goal of day, however came from an unlikely source – corner-back Brian Butler. On 53 minutes, he collected the ball some 60 yards out from the O’Loughlin’s goal and showed great pace, balance and skill before striking past keeper Murphy. GAME, SET, MATCH SHAMROCKS!!

Afterwards, Captain and 2-time All-Star Colin Fennelly, announced that he wouldn’t be putting his lot in again with the county. What a servant. What a player. What a captain.

Glenmore V St Lachtain’s @ UPMC Nowlan Park. Throw-in 2pm FOLLOWING a pulsating senior county final last weekend, the top two teams at intermediate level go head-to-head at UPMC Nowlan Park on Sunday.

To be crowned champions is special, but the real prize is to join the likes of Ballyhale and O’Loughlin’s in next seasons premier hurling arena.

Both sides will fancy their chances of winning, so it has all the hallmarks of a close encounter.

Saints star Many pundits Bergin had expected Henry a brilliant Shefflin’s Thomastown semi-final side to collect the Hanrahan Cup this year, following last season’s penalty shootout drama, but Declan Wall’s side ensured that Henry wouldn’t head to the west as an intermediate champion.

Having claimed the scalp of the bookie’s favourites, the Páirc na Ratha based side will take to the turf on Sunday, no longer the underdog.

How they cope with this tag, could help determine the outcome of the game.

Glenmore are back-boned by the Murphy’s - Eoin, Alan and Shane. These three gentlemen are very important cogs in the south Kilkenny side’s machine. Eoin is the current inter-county netminder, but plays with No.6 on his back at club level and dictates the play, much like his county team mate, Padraig Walsh. Tough and uncompromising, Eoin is also capable of notching a score.

Shane Murphy is normally found at wing-back, and isn’t shy in getting forward either. The furthest forward of the clan, is Alan. An industrious wing-forward, he has also been a part of the inter-county setup. Alan Know’s where the posts are and is normally reliable from the placed ball when required. If the brother’s click, it will be a huge advantage to the green & gold.

In this year’s intermediate championship, Glenmore’s top scorer to date is corner forward Ian Byrne. the nippy attacker has amassed 1-10 in his two appearances, 1-8 of which came in his sides 8-point victory over Danesfort in the quarter-final tie, also stages at UPMC Nowlan Park. Whichever Freshford defender gets the nod to pick up Byrne, will need to stand firm.

Captain Ger Aylward will no doubt prove a handful for the opposing full-back, and will be keen to keep the score board ticking over. His battle could be with Harry Burke, who coped admirably with veteran forward JJ Delaney in the saint’s semi-final win over Fenians. Centre-forward Liam Hennessey will be hoping to provide a link between the middle third and the scoring forwards.

Corner-back, Sean Duggan had a solid semi-final performance and Glenmore will look to him to deal with the undoubted threat that the Freshford attack will pose. We could well see Duggan pick up St Lachtain’s joint captain, Shane Donnelly.

Also, No.3, Eoin Aylward will need to be strong when confronting Cian Dawson, the Maher’s

In midfield, Declan Wall’s side will be hoping to at least break even with their fellow finalists.

Philip Roche will come against a formidable opponent in the other joint captain, John Fitzpatrick. I expect the midfield sector to be crowded throughout the game, with the half-backs from both side’s surging forward.

Freshford manager Steven Farrell will have every confidence in their top scorer this season, Liam Hickey. In his three championship games to date, the classy forward has notched a personal tally of 2-21. In the semi-final victory over Johnstown, Hickey recorded 2-5.

It will be a crucial match-up and one that Glenmore will hope to get right. Could it be a job for a Murphy? Time will tell.

Hickey has some good company in the front six.

Cian Dawson, Shane Donnelly and the Mahers, Darragh and county man James will be hoping to provide a stern test for the Glenmore defence.

The busy Alexander Rafter will no doubt be everywhere. A great link man, he also impressed against Fenians, and covered every blade of grass.

Criomhtann Bergin was very influential in the semi-final, and was very well utilised as the extra man when the opposition were reduced to 14 men. Noel McGree is probably pushing for a start, given his role in their previous game, if not he will certainly be sprung from the bench.

Experienced keeper Darren Brennan will look to secure the bragging rights and come out on top against his county positional rival, Eoin Murphy. I think Eoin might well fancy hitting a score or two to show who’s the real No.1!

Let’s hope this game delivers a feast of hurling for the supporters.
