Carey: Hero and Villain To simply call him a hurler, underplays his genius To simply call 54-year-old DJ Carey, who has been jailed for five and a half years for fraud a former Kilkenny hurler, is to underestimate the fame and esteem he enjoyed in Ireland from the early 1990s.

The man from Gowran was a forward with the pace of a sprinter, superb skill and an eye for goal.

He made his senior debut in 1989 while still in school but quickly became the Kilkenny free-taker. Carey scored nine points in his first All-Ireland senior hurling final in 1991, a defeat to Tipperary shortly before his 21st birthday, and was named an All-Star that December.

The Young Ireland’s clubman hit 1-04 (1-01f ) in diffi-

cult conditions against Cork to claim his first Celtic cross in 1992 and 0-04 as the Cats retained their crown against Galway the following season.

Despite a quiet final in ’93, he was named Hurler of the Year, having scored a particularly memorable goal against Antrim in the semifinal – he pulled first-time on a bouncing ball across the

square by PJ Delaney, and volleyed the sliotar to the net when it came back off the crossbar.

DJ was already the game’s biggest star.

That was Kilkenny’s last appearance in a final for five years, as Offaly and Wexford brought democracy to Leinster hurling, but Carey continued to collect individual

accolades in his field of play.

He was named an All-Star every year from 1991-1995 (twice at wing-forward, once at corner-forward and twice at full-forward) while also becoming a multiple handball champion, and was as much a household name as the Republic of Ireland footballers who had captured the hearts of the nation at two

Congratulations to Catherine Connolly... As our 10th President is sworn in on Tuesday, November 11, she may be the very woman that we need at the moment – to speak out for the neglected, the left behind and for peace.

Ms Connolly has had months to form the vision for her presidency: we are just getting used to her win so perhaps it is a good time for a wish list for her tenure. Let’s hope that President Connolly retains. The coalition of parties from the Left are claiming her win as a victory in Irish politics. Hardly true. The Left are unlikely to put their differences aside and come together in the future.

Living on the banks of the River Nore, for more than two decades she has borne witness to the shifting balance between water, land and those on its edges.

The Tea Houses in Kilkenny presents the upcoming exhibition, River(s) Of No Return by Bernadette Kiely, a native of Thomastown, and is guest curated by Shannon Carroll. The exhibition opens on Saturday, November 15 at 3pm and continues daily 11.30am - 5.30pm November 16 to November 29.

From her studio on the quayside, Bernadette {pic tured] paints, draws and documents the river’s changing surface. Attentive to flooding, her work documents the impact of water on daily life to the ways in which communities respond to it. Her practice is grounded in slow observation: walking the river, listening to it, tracing its presence and noticing how it connects to wider cycles of change, from local floods to wildfires and environmental crises across the world.

More than 70 % of the planet is covered with water.

There is no doubt that water is a force that binds us all, with every community dependent on it. From the vastness of our oceans to the intimacy of local waterways,

When the river flows through your life our relationship with water shapes how we live and how we imagine our future.

Kiely’s work reminds us

that to know a river is not only to recognise its shape and flow, but to sense its power, fragility and inter-

connection with all life. Her paintings and drawings in this exhibition carry a deep reverence, inviting us to

reimagine our relationship with the waters that hold and sustain us.

The work in this exhibition

explores what it means to know a river. Following the recent mass fish kill on the River Blackwater, poisoned in a pollution incident, the importance of this work could not be clearer. At a time when rivers across Ireland face mounting ecological threats, her work is not only a reminder, but an important call to action: to reconnect, to protect and to let the river flow through us all.

This exhibition is presented as part of [K]nore Your River, a communitypowered season of events, art, science and storytelling along the River Nore, inviting everyone to explore how the river shapes our identity and how we can care for it together.

This community project was organised and led

by SEA School Studios & Labs, a mobile learning centre dedicated to exploring Science, Ecology and the Arts in the field, whose mission is to reconnect communities to the many layers of diversity and knowledge in their local landscapes.

Kindly supported by Kilkenny Arts Office and Kilkenny Co Council, the exhibition is co-presented as part of Science Week in Kilkenny, a creative meeting of art and ecology that celebrates the shared curiosity at the heart of both disciplines.

Childminders could close ahead of Govt action The majority of childminders in Ireland have told their representative body they intend to cease operations within the next 12 months as a new Government system takes hold. Surveys and focus groups by Childminding Ireland show most childminders plan to leave rather than be forced into a system that destroys the essence of childminding, its home-

based, family feel and the many benefits it brings to children, families, and communities.

Childminding Ireland, the representative body for childminders in Ireland, said that Minister for Children, Norma Foley and her department seem tone-deaf to the true nature of childminding.

Bernadette Orbinski Burke, Chief Executive of Child-

minding Ireland, has said: “A sustainable future for the sector depends on a system designed from the ground up, one that grows from the roots of what childminding truly offers: personalised, home-based care that benefits children and families alike. Instead of building on its strengths to attract new childminders and expand childcare capacity, this

one-size-fits-all approach is driving childminders out, creating anxiety across the sector and reducing childcare capacity.”

She said that, across Ireland, childminding, the backbone of family childcare and community life, was collapsing.

“It offers a unique, homefrom-home environment where children experience

continuity of care from babyhood through their school years, siblings stay together, and parents build trusted relationships with their childminders. The flexibility of childminding allows parents and childminders to agree on arrangements that suit each child’s and each family’s needs. Childminding supports real-world learning, greater flexibility for families,

and inclusive care for children with additional needs.

Childminding Ireland warns that if nothing changes, thousands of trusted childminders will be lost, reducing choice, flexibility, and affordability for parents. If the expected exodus from the sector is not stopped, there will be a major childcare crisis nationally over the next 12 months.

Ukraine lobby voices ‘grave’ concern over refugee move The Ukraine Civil Society Forum has expressed its severe concern at the changes being discussed by the Government regarding the accommodation supports provided to Ukrainians, both in hosted/offer a home settings and in State accommodation. In letters addressed to Minister of Justice Jim O’Callaghan and Minister of State for Migration Colm Brophy on Monday 3 November, the Forum highlighted the following concerns: 1 Proposed reduction from 90 to 30 days in state provided accommodation.

The UCSF recognised the added pressure placed on State accommodation as a result of the increased number of applications for Temporary Protection Status since the start of September this year, but are of the position that further reducing the amount of time permissible in State accommodation to just 30 days is extremely counterproductive and overall create more problems than it aims to solve.

The 90 days available currently is the minimum amount of time practical to allow that person or family to determine what their next accommodation options are. At present, hosted accommodation supported by the Accommodation Recognition Payment (ARP) is absorbing most of the transition from state accommodation at the end of 90 days. 90 days, or just three months, is the minimum amount of time practical for those who arrive to situate themselves, recover somewhat from the trauma of their dislocation and to being in the process of engaging with hosting and/or private accommodation.

To reduce this period to 30 days will create immense difficulties in this process and may result in homelessness for Ukrainian individuals and families.

In repeated surveys of the Ukrainian community, carried out by Ukrainian Action in

Ireland with support from the State, the level of accommodation support provided in Ireland is not the main motivating factor for displaced Ukrainians choosing Ireland as a destination.

2 Suggested reduction in Accommodation Recognition Payment: Similarly, the Forum expressed grave concern at the suggested reduction of the fee paid to hosts of Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection (BOTPs) from €600 per month to €400 per month. As stated earlier, hosting and the offer a home scheme are absorbing much of the movement from state accommodation. Over 40,000 Ukrainian individuals and families are currently hosted under ARP, to the credit of the Irish public who opened their doors to those in need. To reduce the amount paid and risk the disengagement of hosts and a stalling of the process of hosting in general is unconscionable and risks both added pressure on the private rental sector and potential homelessness and lack of options for those unable to be hosted.

It makes little sense to simultaneously reduce the amount of time available in state accommodation while also negatively altering hosting, which remains the only viable alternative for those seeking refuge in Ireland beyond the private rental sector. As the Ministers have themselves said in media and the Oireachtas, most of those who engaged in hosting as hosts are not landlords, they are not seeking profit – they are engaging in hosting as a humanitarian action. This is a phenomenon we should be supporting as a state, not undermining and jeopardising.

Overall, the proposed changes risk the movement of Ukrainians from Temporary Protection Status into their seeking to apply for protection.

Another Turner in the Art world A Kilkenny-based former Irish swimming champion has swapped the pool for paint brushes as he prepares for his debut exhibition at Ireland’s largest art fair.

Conor Turner represented his country at juvenile and senior level, before building his career in real estate.

But his remarkable transition to a full-time artist emerged when he and his family began painting to pass the time during lockdown.

On a Zoom call months later, a client spotted one of his abstract works hanging on his wall, beginning a career pivot which has now propelled him to Art Source at Dublin’s RDS, running from November 14-16.

“It’s the biggest showcase

of my work to date,” said Turner, 31, originally from Santry in North Dublin but now living just outside Kilkenny city.

“Art is a relatively new venture for me.

“My wife and her family were self-isolating and one evening, we decided to do portraits of each other, it was just a bit of a laugh but I kept at it as a pastime.”

It was only when an American client noticed – and later bought – some of his work, that abstract expressionist artist Turner found the confidence to leave the rat race behind for good.

Some soul-searching and advice on the art world from established artist Kevin Sharkey, whose works Turner is a fan of, led him on his new path.

“I fleshed it out with him,

I asked him ‘am I insane or can I do this?’ and he gave me some tips and the mindset to understand that my art is not for everyone, and some people will tell you straight out they don’t like it.

“But I’m getting enquiries in (about the art) from the most weird and wonderful places.”

‘Fragments of Joy’, an expansive, 6-metre long work spread across five canvasses and which took months to complete, will be his showstopper at Art Source.

The show features over 200 of the best Irish and international artists and galleries, a big selection of affordable art and pieces from some of the biggest names in the art world, such as Tracey Emin, Andy Warhol and John

Redmond.

“The Irish public shows increasing demand for art with every passing year and Art Source has become a must in the calendar year for anyone looking to add a piece of art to their collection,” said show organiser Patrick O’Sullivan.

“As a collective, Irish people have an innate cultural appreciation for the arts and Art Source not only gives them the opportunity to bring home one-off original artworks, but also to meet the artists behind the pieces.”

Expected to draw more than 15,000 people, it opens at the RDS on Friday, November 14 and runs until November 16. * For more information and tickets visit artsource. ie.

The Fact Of The Matter Paul Hopkins

We need some home truths on refugees In the hamlet where I lay my head, when Russia invaded Ukraine my neighbours opened their doors and hearts to refugees fleeing for their lives. Committees were set up, as were social media pages dedicated to finding a home, a refuge, to women and children who had been uprooted from their families, their men staying behind to fight.

The support was overwhelming, the kindness of strangers evident in their actions. Now, though, three years on, the welcome has shifted somewhat off the mat, if Ukrainians seeking a refuge by way of a plea on the social media dedicated page, and getting no offers, is anything to go by. It would seem that refugees and asylum-seekers, like friends who come to stay in your house, might have outlived their welcome. Such is the capricious nature of charitable endeavour.

That is not to say that many asylum seekers have

not settled into life in many hamlets throughout the country. They have, and are contributing significantly to Irish life – diversity and friendship walking hand-in-hand.

There are, however, other considerations to be looked at squarely by the Government, local authorities and the courts.

First, though, some figures: As of September 2024 there were some 32,000 people in International Protection accommodation in Ireland. In that year, 18,560 new International Protection applications were made and 13,099 decisions were reached, with only 3,888 proving positive outcomes.

Note, that the 107,000 Ukrainians here are not included in the asylum seekers figure as they are here under an EU directive.

The 18,560 figure centres on those coming from Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Jordan, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Other countries too, but not all are fleeing

war and political oppression.

Some, like from South Africa, are economic migrants. And some have no success in their applications and face deportations orders. Other non-nationals, judged ‘undesirables’ (mainly men) and those who authorities here have little background knowledge of, nor indeed any sure idea of their identity, are also given their marching orders.

The whole process is slow and drawn out, with many deportation orders never followed through. Former Justice Minister Michael McDowell has said repeatedly that the process is flawed and not worth the paper it is written on.

Since January 2017, the International Protection Office (IPO) has been responsible for receiving and examining applications. The Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) (formerly Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS)) is part of the Department of Justice and Equality and pro-

vides data about migration in Ireland to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

A little girl is allegedly sexually assaulted by a man allegedly issued a deportation order back in March and now awaiting triaL. Fears are confirmed and heightened.

Connection between asylum-

seekers and those jailed for crime stands only at just more than 10% and not 60% as often flaunted, but people swayed by alt-right activists online don’t see that. Lack of education and proper jobs don’t help either.

The Government did little to keep the local community informed when it bought Citywest recently for two purposes: as a transit hub to process asylum applications and an accomm­odation centre.

As I write, Gardai are investigating the arson of a protection centre in Drogheda, Co Louth which sees 25 refugees, women and children, without a roof over their head.

Such scenarios are the work of extremists and racists. Many other people have genuine concerns and worries. The alleged attack on the 10-yearold girl, in the care of Tusla and who ran off, just lit the fuse.

Why was her alleged attacker

still hanging around eight months after being issued a deportation order?

In a country with a notseriously-tackled housing crisis, which sees our young and brightest going abroad, a country with a shortage of teachers, a child care agency with questionable credentials, the fears and concerns of many are understandable.

We need non-nationals among us, for their abilities as medics or to do the thankless tasks many of us decline. But there will come a time when enough will be enough and we will have to say “Full up”.

More importantly, though, we need to have a clear and accountable debate on the issue of asylum seekers, and a debate that runs deeper than the occasional airplane taking a baker’s dozen of rejected asylum seekers back home.

And the undesirable, who allegedly attacked a little girl, not on board, as he should have been.

History of Irish Women in Brewing, Bottling and Behind the Bar unveiled at Smithwick’s Experience Kilkenny

The role of Irish women played as business owners and entrepreneurs across the centuries will be celebrated and explored by expert researchers, archivists and historians as part of a new and engaging Kilkenomics event this year.

The historic Smithwick’s Experience Kilkenny on the city’s Medieval Mile is the venue on Saturday night, November 8, for ‘Women’s Business: The History of Irish Women in Brewing, Bottling and Behind the Bar’.

She joins an expert panel which includes Dr Antonia Hart, writer, researcher, historian and author of a number of publications, among them ‘Ghost Signs of Dublin’. Dr Hart will share her research on women in business in Ireland in the 19th

and 20th centuries and discuss her recently launched book The Commercial Lives of Irish Women, 1850-1922: Business as Usual.

Dr Christina Wade, a beer historian and author specialising in the hidden histories of the brewing trade, especially the role of women, will unveil her research into the role of women in the brewing trade, culminating in her book Filthy Queens: A History of Beer in Ireland.

“We’re inviting the general public to join us for an evening where we demystify the role of Irish women in Ireland’s everyday economy prior to the 21st Century,” Eibhlin Colgan explained.

“I’ll be going through the Guinness Trade Ledgers, which we recently digitised and indexed. The Ledgers are a previously untapped resource for genealogy, a litmus test for the broader economy, and a census of publicans. They are also an unparalleled example of Irish women in the workplace and as business owners during the 19th and 20th centuries.

“The Trade Ledgers contain meticulous records of the

distribution and sale of Guinness to individual publicans and wholesalers across the islands of Ireland and Great Britain. They include sales further overseas on a smaller scale, including mainland Europe, the United States and more.”

Smithwick’s Experience Kilkenny Manager, Ignacio Peregrina, said the event will have broad appeal and will be of significant interest to current or past publicans, entrepreneurs and those with an interest in history and how our economy has evolved down through the ages.

“The Smithwick family has been part of the economic and social fabric of Kilkenny down through the Centuries. Land prices 'not the full story' The Central Statistics Office's (CSO) latest report on agricultural land prices has raised new questions about transparency in the farmland market.

Its data again includes vast exclusions, leaving farmers and policymakers with only a partial picture of what's really happening on the land, according to The Farming Independent.

While the headline figures show that land prices rose again in 2024, the CSO itself issued a strong health warning on how the data should be interpreted.

Only 0.5% of Ireland's total agricultural land area changed hands last year, and large categories of transactions are excluded from the figures – including land sold for non-farming use, lifestyle

or development purposes, any land with entitlements attached, commonage, land with a house, and inheritance or family transfers.

Even small parcels under half an acre, and any sales valued below €10,000 or above €62,000 per hectare, were left out.

That long list of exclusions means the published prices only represent an unknown

proportion of the market, leaving major gaps in understanding what's really happening with land mobility and ownership.

Barriers The uncertainty comes at a time when access to land is one of the biggest barriers facing new entrants and younger farmers.

Across Europe, the European Commission is moving to

tackle exactly that problem.

As part of its Generational Renewal Strategy, Brussels is developing a European Land Observatory to improve transparency and cooperation between member states.

The CSO figures show that 57,212 acres of farmland were sold nationally in 2024, the lowest volume in over a decade, down 8.9pc from 62,823 acres in 2023 and well

New figures reveal a rise in second-hand Japanese car imports as Irish drivers seek affordable diesel options.

Analysis from Close Brothers Motor Finance has revealed a 20.71% rise in secondhand cars imported from Japan to Kilkenny this year, while secondhand UK imports in Kilkenny are down 32%, as of the end of October.

The shift comes as taxes on new diesel vehicles continue to rise, and electric vehicles also remain out of reach for many household budgets despite grants and incentives.

As many motorists look for affordable alternatives, dealers are also struggling to source new diesel models due to rising import duties and VRT. Secondhand Japanese imports are quickly filling the gap, offering affordable pricing for dealers and motorists alike.

With the average annual cost of running a car in Ireland now exceeding €10,000 and Irish households spending upwards of €1,000 a week on living expenses, Irish motorists are seeking cost-efficient solutions.

Peter Pedlow, Director of Sales at Close Brothers Motor Finance Ireland, said: “The uptake in Japanese imports shows how Irish consumers are adapting to the changing market.

"With household budgets under pressure and cost of living on the rise, imported second-hand Japanese cars offer a practical and affordable alternative.

“We’re seeing growing demand for finance options that work on a tighter budget, as well as the types of cars being sold. There is still a lot more to be done, but our main focus remains offering flexible finance options for everyday Irish drivers,” he said.

Texaco/Jerpoint Glass Connection

Sometimes a single artwork can tell a story that spans generations, connecting creative spirits across time and place. Such is the case with an award-winning painting in the 2025 Texaco Art Competition—a vibrant floral composition by Julie Power who attends St. Augustine's in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford and was just sixteen when she entered the competition, which has revealed an unexpected and delightful link to one of Ireland’s most celebrated craft studios: Jerpoint Glass.

Julie Power’s painting entitled “Mam's Lilies” depicts a lively bouquet of flowers bursting from a glass jug whose distinctive hues and form instantly resonated with the judges. The vessel, though modest in subject, carries with it a legacy of

Irish design excellence. It is a Jerpoint Glass jug, hand-blown in Kilkenny and beloved for its characteristic swirl of colour and subtle individuality. The painting’s rich palette and expressive brushwork clearly captured the spirit of the glassware that inspired it, earning Julie Power a place among the 2025 winners in one of Ireland’s longest running and most prestigious youth art competitions.

Yet, the story deepens as we travel back more than six decades, when the Texaco competition itself—known then as the Caltex Art Competition— helped foster another young artist whose life would become deeply intertwined with Irish glass. In 1959, a young Kathleen O’Neill entered the Caltex Art Competition and won a Crolly Doll for her artistic talent. Few

could have predicted that this early creative accolade would foreshadow a lifelong commitment to craft and design and ultimately help shape the world of contemporary Irish glassmaking.

Today, that same Kathleen is known as Kathleen Leadbetter, cofounder and owner—along with her late husband Keith Leadbetter—of Jerpoint Glass Studio. Her story forms a charming historical arc: the same competition that recognised her emerging artistic promise in 1959 continues to honour Irish creativity today, now celebrating an artwork featuring the very glassware she helped bring into being. What began as a childhood prize has now become a legacy carried proudly into a new generation of Irish makers and artists.

Jerpoint Glass itself has earned a remarkable reputation since its founding in 1979. Built on a passionate dedication to master craftsmanship, the studio has revived and reimagined traditional glassblowing techniques, drawing on 2,000 years of glassmaking heritage.

Each work is hand-made, shaped in real time at the furnace by skilled glassblowers who coax molten material into elegant forms. No two pieces are identical; each holds the subtle traces of the hands that created it.

Renowned for its vibrant colours and fluid shapes, Jerpoint Glass offers a balance of beauty and functionality.

Its collection ranges from tableware and jugs to vases, bowls, ornaments,

A wish list for our new President Congratulations to Catherine Connolly, who began her Presidential campaign early, worked hard and won hearts.

That she is our 10th President is due partly to circumstance: the effect of our convoluted nomination system, combined with misjudgements by the two main parties.

Had it been otherwise, there might have been a different result, but perhaps we are fortunate for our new President-to-be may be the very woman that we need at the moment – to speak out for the neglected, the left behind and for peace. Ms Connolly has had months to form the vision for her presidency: we are just getting used to her win so, perhaps, it is a good time for a wish list for her tenure.

1. Let’s hope that Connolly retains her independence, having stood as an independent candidate. The coalition

of parties from the Left who backed her are claiming her win as a victory and watershed in Irish politics. This is hardly true. The Left are unlikely to put their differences aside and come together in future and the people rejected Sinn Fein in the last election. Aside from Connolly’s appeal, this was an anti- Government vote; half the voters

stayed away and an astounding 13% spoiled their votes in protest, largely over the Jim Gavin debacle and the lack of alternative candidates.

2. It would be wonderful if the new President could’ shine a light’, as presidential candidates are fond of saying, on areas which need and deserve attention, areas often covered in this column: among them carers, children in needs of surgery or psychiatric assessment, survivors of mother and baby homes and asylum seekers.

3. The Office of Public works might be encouraged to provide an example of sustainability in the 130 acres of parkland and Victorian gardens surrounding the 1751 Aras. Former first Lady Michelle Obama created a vegetable garden at the White House. Why not one at the Aras, even a spot of wilding instead of lawns and bedding

plants while respecting the Richard Turner greenhouse and parterre?

4. Encouraging crossborder initiatives and all the ground work that needs to be done in advance of unity is the best way to establish trust and bring North and South together.

5. The current enthusiasm for learning Irish is great and we are proud to have a President who has Irish. But go easy with Gaeilge in the North, where for some it can seem like cultural imperialism. Witness the destruction of street signs in Irish.

6. With her good figure and poise the President=elect could be an ideal candidate to promote Irish fashion where many new designers are coming to the fore, not only with formal wear but with knitwear and casual clothing.

7. One of the President’s

powers is to grant a Presidential Pardon on the advice of the Government acting on a petition for miscarriage of justice. It would be a relief to have a pardon for secondary teacher Enoch Burke, dismissed from Wilson’s Hospital School stemming from refusal to use the transgender pronoun ‘they’ on the grounds of his religious belief. Connolly approves of the Gender Recognition Act and has said: “We need an inclusive society, to move away from imposing beliefs that someone is not comfortable with.” Surely this should work both ways.

8. Hosting an international centre for diplomacy (the Aras has 95 rooms and peace-making succeeds better when women are involved) to pool ideas on supporting peace initiatives around the world, arms reduction and preventing

conflicts escalating, like the horrors unfolding in the Sudan, could be a splendid contribution. As a neutral country Ireland is ideally placed for this role. War is abhorrent but defence is necessary where aggressors threaten to conquer or take over countries, as the Nazis did in WWII and as Russia is doing in Ukraine before paths can be cleared to bring lasting peace.

9. By 2030 Connolly (68), born under the nurturing Cancer sign, will be one in a million over 65s. Pensioners need a champion for imaginative support, offsetting loneliness and blame for being a cost to the Nation.

10. Catherine Connolly says that she will represent a ‘New Republic’. We hardly want a revolution, the Republic we have will do fine with a bit of renewal and good housekeeping.

News DJ Carey, who was born on November 11, 1970, began his hurling career at club level with Young Irelands.

He broke onto the club’s top adult team as a 17-year-old in 1988 and enjoyed his first success in 1992 when the club won the Kilkenny Intermediate Championship title and promotion to the top flight of Kilkenny hurling.

Carey later won Kilkenny Senior Championship medals as captain in 1996 and 2002. He made numerous championship appearances in three different grades of hurling for the club before retiring after a 25-year club career in 2013.

At inter-county level, Carey was part of the successful Kilkenny minor team that won the All-Ireland Championship in 1988 before later the All-Ireland Championships with the under-21 team in 1990. He joined the Kilkenny senior team in 1988.

From his debut, Carey was ever-present as a forward and made a combined total of 138 National League and Championship appearances in a career that ended with his last game in 2005. During that time he was part of five All-Ireland Championshipwinning teams – in 1992, 1993, 2000, 2002 and 2003.

Carey also secured 10 Leinster Championship medals and four National Hurling League medals.

He announced his retirement from inter-county hurling on 1 June 1, 2006.

Carey’s granduncle, Paddy Phelan, won four All-Ireland medals with Kilkenny. His aunt, Peggy Carey, won four All-Ireland medal with the Kilkenny camogie team.

Carey’s brother, Martin, was sub goalkeeper on the Kilkenny team for a number of years.

Carey, who now faces five and a half years in jail for fraud and deception, has been described as “GAA’s first superstar” and a “hurling legend”. During his playing days he won nine All-Star awards, as well as being named Texaco Hurler of the

He had been repeatedly voted onto teams made up of the sport’s greats, including on the Kilkenny Hurling Team of the Century in 2000 and on a special Leinster Hurling Team (1984-2009). Carey’s omission from the Hurling Team of the Millennium was seen as controversial at the time.

In retirement from playing, he became involved in team management and coaching.

At club level he has trained the Young Irelands junior hurling team, while he has

also served as hurling coach at Carlow Institute of Technology. Carey’s business and personal life has also been the subject of significant coverage.

Denis Joseph Carey was born into a large family, with three brothers and three sisters. One of his sisters, Catriona Carey, was a member of the Ireland women’s national field hockey team, as well as being part of the Kilkenny senior camogie team. His brother, Martin Carey, was also a member of the Kilkenny hurling panel

as a substitute goalkeeper for a number of years. Several members of Carey’s extended family have also played hurling and camogie.

Carey’s private life, involving his wife and two children, had long been the subject of intense media scrutiny and rumour. News of the breakdown of his seven-year marriage hit the headlines shortly before the All-Ireland final in 2003 although Carey and his wife had been separated for more than a year. A year later Carey spoke for the first time about the marriage break-

down and of finding new love with British-born millionaire Sarah Newman. Carey and Newman, who is also a celebrity and television personality, separated in 2012.

Carey began a number of business ventures after retiring, including DJ Carey Enterprises. Based in his home village of Gowran, it was a wholesale company selling hygiene products to other businesses. His former partner Sarah Newman, who was a director of DJ Carey Enterprises, called in the auditors in 2012, and a series

of discrepancies were found.

Around this time, two of his other businesses collapsed with major losses to creditors. DJ Carey Enterprises was dissolved in 2016. In 2017, Carey’s debts of over €9.5m were written down to €60,000.

In 2017, Allied Irish Banks (AIB) reportedly agreed to write-down a €9.5 million debt associated with Carey.

AIB, which was majority State-owned at the time, was asked to speak to an Oireachtas committee about the arrangement in early 2023. Bank transfers, made to Carey in 2020 by his sister Caitriona (who had previously worked at the same business), were also reputedly the subject of “Garda scrutiny” in early 2023.

In July 2025, Carey pleaded guilty in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to 10 counts of deception, admitting that he fraudulently claimed to have cancer between 2014 and 2022 in order to induce at least 12 people — including billionaire Denis O’Brizen — to donate money allegedly for treatment. He had originally faced 21 charges, including two counts involving false instruments; one count was struck out and the remainder taken into consideration during his recent sentencing.

Appearing impassive in court dressed in a dark suit, Carey pleaded “guilty” to each count, while his defence counsel noted that he had serious health issues, including undergoing heart surgery in 2024, as well as psychological distress, and requested preparation of medical and psychological reports. He was granted continuing bail and his sentencing hearing was scheduled for October 29 last.

The total amount defrauded was not disclosed, though victim Noel Tynan described donating €10,000 after believing Carey’s illness. Irish media highlighted that Carey’s conviction marked a dramatic fall from grace for one of hurling’s most iconic and celebrated figures.

St Kieran’s and the early years of a genius hurler Carey first came to prominence as a hurler with St Kieran’s College in Kilkenny.

He played in every grade of hurling before joining the college’s senior hurling team as a 16-year-old. On 22 March 1987, Carey was listed amongst the substitutes when St Kieran’s College faced Birr Community School in the Leinster final. He was introduced as a substitute and collected a winners’ medal following the 4–08 to 3–09 victory.

Carey joined the Young Irelands club at a young age and played in all grades at juvenile and underage levels.

He became a regular member of the club’s top adult team during the 1988 Kilkenny

Intermediate Hurling Championship.

On September 24, 1989, Carey was just 18-yearsold when he played in his first Kilkenny Intermediate Championship final. Lining out in goal he ended the game on the losing side following a 2–13 to 0–14 defeat

by Mullinavat.

Carey lined out in a second Kilkenny Intermediate Championship final on October 27, 1991, however, by now he was lining out at centre-forward. He scored 1-02, including a goal from a penalty, in the 4–09 to 2–08 defeat by Dicksboro.

On October 18, 1992, Carey lined out in a second successive Kilkenny Intermediate

Championship final – his third overall. Selected to play at full-forward, he suffered concussion after a heavy knock late in the first half but remained on the field until he was substituted in the 54th minute. Carey ended the game with a winners’ medal after the 2–12 to 1–07 defeat of Conahy Shamrocks.

Carey was appointed captain of the Young Irelands senior team for the 1996 Kilkenny Senior Championship. On 6 October, 1996, he captained the team to the final against James Stephens.

Carey was the game’s top scorer with 1–05 in the 2–10 to 0–16 draw.The replay on October 20 saw Carey top score with 2-04 and claim a

winners’ medal after a 3–09 to 2–10 victory.

On October 12, 1997, Carey lined out in a second successive Kilkenny Senior Championship final. He ended the game as the top scorer with 1-02, however, Young Irelands suffered a 2–10 to 2–07 defeat by Dunnamaggin.

Carey ended the championship as the top scorer with 3-16 from three games.

Carey lined out in a third Kilkenny Senior Championship final on October 27, 2002. He ended the game with a second winners’ medal after top scoring with 2–07 in the 3–14 to 1–15 defeat of Dunnamaggin.Carey was also the championship’s top scorer with 5-19 from three

games. On 1 December 2002, he scored a point from a free when Young Irelands suffered a 2–05 to 1–02 defeat by Birr in the Leinster final.

On 26 October 2003, Carey was at full-forward when Young Irelands lined out against O’Loughlin Gaels in the Kilkenny Senior Championship final. He top scored for the team with 1–03 in the 2–12 to 3–09 draw with O’Loughlin Gaels. Carey was again at full-forward for the replay on 2 November 2003 and was the game’s joint top scorer with 1–07 in the 2–12 to 2–10 defeat.

Carey made his fifth Kilkenny Senior Championship final appearance on October 31, 2004 when Young Ire-

lands lined out against James Stephens. He top scored with 3-06 but ended the game on the losing side after the 2–16 to 3–12 defeat. Carey ended the championship as the top scorer with 5-35 from five games.

On October 6, 2007, Carey lined out in his last senior game for Young Irelands.

He top scored for the team with six points in the 1–11 to 0–13 defeat of Mullinavat in a relegation play-off at Nowlan Park.

After four years away from the club scene he returned as a member of the Young Irelands junior team. He began as a goalkeeper before taking up his more regular position in the full-forward line.

Our changing pensions landscape is taxing For business owners, landlords, and high-earning professionals, Small Self-Administered Pension Schemes (SSAPs) have long been a beacon of financial autonomy. These schemes, typically used by proprietary directors, offer unparalleled flexibility in retirement planning allowing investments in diverse assets like property, stocks, and commodities. However, new regulations set to take effect in April 2026 could upend this tax-efficient vehicle, leaving many SSAP holders facing a tough choice, adapt or be crushed by soaring costs.

The allure of SSAPs lies in their control and tax benefits. Unlike traditional occupational pensions, SSAPs let individuals direct their funds into investments that suit their goals. Take a business owner with €100,000 in profits: by transferring this into an SSAP, instead of taking it as salary, they avoid €52,000 in taxes and social insurance, doubling their investment

power.

If they then buy a rental property yielding €10,000 annually, that income grows tax-free within the trust. If the property’s value rises by €50,000 and is sold, the full €150,000 remains in the pension, free of capital

gains tax. Personal contributions also qualify for income tax relief at the individual’s highest tax rate, up to 40% for those over 60, making SSAPs an excellent means of building wealth.

This flexibility comes with rules. SSAPs require an inde-

pendent, Revenue-approved trustee to ensure compliance, charging fees typically between 1% and 4% of the fund annually. But there is a dramatic shift coming down the line. The EU’s Institutions for Occupational Retirement Provision (IORP) II directive,

which entered Irish law in 2021, imposes strict controls, risk management, and transparency rules.

Ireland’s decision to apply these to single-member schemes like SSAPs is, as one financial advisor puts it, “using a sledgehammer to crack a nut”.

These fees threaten to erode the value of SSAPs, pushing holders toward alternatives like Personal Retirement Savings Accounts (PRSAs).

Yet, PRSAs come with limitations, as contributions are capped at 100% of annual salary, which can restrain those who, like many selfemployed individuals, earn irregularly in their early years but wish to catch up later.

Transferring to a PRSA is also no simple task, especially for schemes holding assets like property, mortgages or loan notes which could delay exits and expose holders to rising costs.

The new rules reflect a broader shift toward State

control over pension investments, limiting the freedom that made SSAPs attractive.

For the average business owner, this feels like a betrayal of the entrepreneurial spirit.

SSAPs offered a way to secure retirement while leveraging business success, but the incoming fees could make them unsustainable.

As Ireland’s pension landscape consolidates, SSAP holders must rethink their strategies. Many SSAPs are heavily weighted toward property and low-yield cash, which limits diversification.

Exploring assets like equities or bonds could mitigate risks and drive growth.

Tribute

A tribute to Tommy Cuddihy

They recalled Tommy (66) as honest, kind, a lover of nature, and the “soul of wit.”

He had lived at Cashel Avenue, Kilkenny, and formerly in Green Street, Callan.

Many more paid tribute online or by attending the Requiem Mass in the Church of the Assumption.

They spoke of him as having been remarkably conscientious and ever helpful… most visibly in his work career but equally in all his dealings… throughout a life tragically cut short on October 24.th They shared the happiest of memories…of Tommy’s time in Chadwick’s of Kilkenny, Avonmore Home & Farm, and the Co-op Store in Callan, and the countless occasions that he had brightened up a gathering, whether of family members, friends or sporting people, with his gentle but deeply insightful wit.

I was in the same class as Tommy from the beginning of primary school in the Callan Convent right up to Third Year in secondary at the CBS. Even back then, he could enliven what might otherwise be a dull or unappealing situation or atmosphere.

My earliest school memory of Tommy is clear in my mind owing to an historic association. The teacher of First Class, Sister Camillus, (later known as Sister Nóirín) surprised us all with an announcement that she had bought bulls eyes from Madge Kelly’s shop for the class.

This was to celebrate the demolition of Nelson’s Pillar in Dublin the day before. Unfortunately, there weren’t enough sweets to go around. Some pupils got two or three, others five or six and some got none.

Anyway, Tommy was lucky enough to get a few bulls eyes, which he promptly shared among the class. It might not have been a huge event in the great scheme of life but it demonstrated that he had a big heart even as a seven-year-old.

In secondary school, he was the one who injected humour into just about any situation, whether in class or break-time. I remember a day in Second Year when a teacher was droning on about some obscure historical episode and trying, with limited success, to get our attention. As a last resort, or so it seemed, he said, close to the end of the lesson: “Well, Tommy, what do you think?”

Callan witnessed a sad farewell last week.

Amid pouring rain and a wind that fanned autumn leaves across darkened West Street, hundreds of grieving friends queued outside the funeral home. They had gathered to say goodbye to Tommy Cuddihy.

He said this, we assumed, because he knew Tommy would say something to get things (somehow) back on track…or at least refocus our attention.

A few years later, in 1978, I was in the Co-op store in Callan when Tommy also worked there.

His father Paddy had worked for decades in the Co-op and was an immensely popular man in the locality. Like Tommy, he didn’t have far to go for the lunch break, with the house just across the street.

Tommy’s mother, Josephine, better known as Babe, would have the kettle on. Widely respected in Callan, she excelled at recreational landscape painting.

Tommy himself would later develop a keen interest in art and sculpture.

He certainly went the extra mile to keep customers happy. Almost from the week when he started at the Co-op Tommy won their trust and respect. He

showed a genuine concern and interest in their prospective purchases, as he located the requested item from the vast array of merchandise.

When he first arrived at the store he compiled detailed lists to keep track of the bewildering range of paints, nuts, bolts, pottery, plumbing, farm tools, electrical equipment, timber, iron, animal feeds, and a host of other displays, and there was no computer to assist. The rest of the staff deferred to his skill and the “handle” he had on running the store.

In his free time, he played golf, pool and badminton, or the odd game of billiards in the Town Hall, when he wasn’t out meeting friends for a laugh or a get-together.

My own father spoke highly of Tommy as someone who’d be missed if he left the Co-op. He did leave, to further his career, and the store definitely missed him.

But the Co-op’s loss was

a welcome gain for Chadwick’s of Kilkenny, where he drew upon his valuable experience at the Co-op, built on it, and proved to be a top-class addition to the team at his new posting.

Even as he excelled at his job, melding efficiency with affability and an uncanny knack for keeping customers happy, the wit that many of us had seen in his school days never diminished.

Lunch breaks at Chadwick’s could turn into nailbiting poker sessions. Vegas was nothing to the hands that were dealt and the moves witnessed as Tommy played the game.

He loved nature too, and at the Requiem Mass, his son Tom recalled that the family knew the name of just about every bird, bush and tree, thanks to all the walks with their father along riversides, through fields and down rustic laneways.

He liked the sound of birdsong: woodland tranquility was a pleasant contrast to

work and the chores of life.

He had a superb knowledge of anatomy also and could name all the bones in the body with ease.

Though a proverbial “open book” in his dealings with workmates and customers, and in wider society, he kept his cards close to his chest at the poker table.

Most days nobody could outwit him and winning came naturally.

Tommy played the game of life with equal skill and foresight… but with the utmost decency and consideration for others. He was an exemplary father and a loving husband. Several families and countless friends felt the sadness of his passing.

There was an outpouring of support for his wife Kay, who’s recovering from the dreadful accident, for their sons Tom and Simon and daughter Ciara, for Tommy’s sister Joan and his brothers, Pa, Joe, Martin, and Seamus.

took us back over the decades of a life cut short.

He alluded to a sorrow that no words could express.

In the congregation, there was shock and disbelief… mingled with the joy of recollection. Amid grief, there was hope.

A new life awaited Tommy…in a world elsewhere: Promotion for a life well lived.

The choir sang a heavenly hymn as we said goodbye to the man with the kind heart and the lovely smile.

Tommy was pre-deceased by his parents Patrick and Josephine (Babe) Cuddihy. Deeply missed by his beloved wife Kay (née O’Brien), his loving children Simon, Tom and Ciara and their partners. Cherished by his sister Joan and his brothers Joe, Martin, Pa and Seamus and their families.

Sadly missed by Kay’s brothers, Simon, John, Oliver and Michael and their families.

Also his many friends and work colleagues.

Ann Hehir: caring, talented, unassuming ...

We met in O’Riada’s pub most Wednesday nights. There were five of us: Pat Delaney, Jimmy McGarry, Bill and Ann Hehir and myself. Peig, our landlady, and the owner of O’Riadas at the time, called us ‘The Wednesday Night Gang’. And I guess we were.

Sometimes we were joined

by Nicky Maher and Mick McGrath. Needless to say we drank a few pints and talked a lot on those nights.

We chatted, we laughed but mostly we argued. Debated if you wish but debates don’t quite reach the decibel levels of our exchanges (thanks to that Unholy Trinity of Trump, Netanyahu and Putin).

At times we were so loud that Sue, Peig’s right-hand woman, threatened us with yellow cards. But it was never just politics that was on the agenda. To quote Peig, who occasionally joined us in our chats: “Ye got through a lot on those Wednesday nights: pol-

itics, sport, parents, success, life after death and politics again.”

And we did.

If some of the above sounds familiar it’s because I wrote something similar after Pat Delaney, one of the five, passed away last February.

Little did we think that we’d lose Ann Hehir before the year was out. But lose her we

did much to our profound sadness and disbelief. We knew Ann was ill, she told us so one night and wanted no more talk about it. And there wasn’t.

Ann was one courageous, resilient and stoic lady but even she, a nurse by profession, and who understood her illness, might not have expected her decline to be

so rapid. But rapid it was and now our ‘Gang of Five’ has been reduced to three.

Ann loved her style and was multitalented. She was also extremely modest, and unassuming, about her artistic gifts. She played the piano, made hats (an amateur milliner was Ann) and dabbled in pottery. On my desk at home is a lovely, ceramic bowl which I purchased at an exhibition of her work one Arts Festival and which I dearly treasure now.

Ann loved flowers, and was a talented flower arranger; indeed Ann, along with her good friend Mary Pyke, arranged flowers for weddings, and special occasions, all over Kilkenny and Leinster.

Ann made a beautiful Christmas wreath for our front door last year and refused to accept any payment but when I insisted – she donated the money to charity.

But that was Ann – quietly

considerate and caring.

Another quality that I loved about Ann was her talent for listening. She was a great listener (which is not to say that she didn’t have strong opinions, for sure she had – and voiced them) but Ann listened while letting the rest of us babble on, knee deep in bullshit betimes. That said, it was good bullshit. Great bullshit. If there’s a scale for measuring bullshit – ours would be way up there.

Occasionally, Ann and myself would leave the ‘politicos’ to it and have a quiet natter about this and that, mutual friends, and sometimes people we didn’t exactly dislike but weren’t overly fond of (only one or two, you understand). Did we gossip? God forbid. Well, maybe a little. A little, little!

We got on, Ann and myself; we were kindred spirits in many ways.

Ann passed on the morning

October 3 at University Hospital Waterford. Jimmy McGarry and I were privileged to be able to spend some precious time that Thursday night with Ann in her final hours. I felt like an intruder in the room among her family, her daughter Sandra, son Kenny, sister Mary, brother Michael and close family relations, but they made Jimmy and myself feel like family as, of course, did Bill.

And we knew, knew in our hearts, that Ann would have wanted both of us there because over time that ‘Gang of Five’ had become a ‘family of five’ while another ‘family’, Ann’s two great friends, Peig and Elenor, were always there for her. Jimmy and I left Ann to her family and loved ones but before going I pressed my lips to her cheek and whispered: “ A kiss for the journey, Ann, a kiss for the journey...”

Remembering Jo Jo Dullard with prayer service Jo Jo Dullard

Jo Jo Dullard was 21 years of age when she disappeared.

This November marks the 30th anniversary of her disappearance as she was making her way from Dublin back home to Callan in Co Kilkenny. To mark the anniversary, a walk and prayer service to remember Jo Jo will take place on Sunday November 9th at the courtyard of Kilkenny Castle at 2 pm.

The group will then walk to the missing persons monument. Speaking to The Kilkenny Observer, Fr Willie Purcell said that this gathering is an opportunity for all of us to gather, 30 years on, to ensure that Jo Jo is not forgotten and the search for her will continue.

Choices Shape Your Future

Let’s dish the dirt on kids

What is the most important thing that your kids should eat? According to Canadian micro-biologists, B Brett Finlay and Marie-Claire Arrieta the answer appears to be some plain good old healthy dirt according to their book “Let them eat dirt: Saving your child from an over sanitized world.”

They are not advocating that kids “chow down on filth, but we all need to come off our high horses on hygiene. For hundreds of years we have thought that cleanliness is next to godliness, however, we’re beginning to realize that over sanitization actually damages our children’s health.”

I refuse to buy into the TV ads that promote antibacterial household sprays.

Do our kitchens need the same level of sterilisation as hospital operating theatres, do all surfaces have to be squeaky clean? Somewhere

deep down I always had my doubts and that there was nothing wrong with a good old fashioned wipe of a cloth… apparently, I’m right.

Undoubtedly, good hygiene is essential and because of good practice, life expectancy has doubled from 40 years in 1841 to 79+ in 2011.… In the 1800s countless women died of infection after childbirth.

In 1847 Dr. Semmelweiss demonstrated that good old hand scrubbing with carbolic soap would reduce incidence of infection. This was ridiculed by the medical and scientific establishment and he was later committed to a mental asylum by his colleagues and died soon after. Today he is known as “The saviour of mothers”.

In recent times we have gone overboard with too much sanitization, resulting in a huge increase in chronic non- infectious diseases eg: allergies, asthma,

inflammatory bowel disease and many auto-immune diseases.

From 1990 to 1998 (only 8 years!) the UK wheezing rates of kids aged 1 to 5 doubled and each year the number of British allergy sufferers increases by 5 %, and those with food allergies had doubled in a decade and continues to increase! It was predicted that by 2025 asthma would be the most common chronic childhood disease in the UK. What is going on?

To find answers, Arrieta and Findlay undertook a study which showed that 3-monthold babies with 4 specific microbes in their faeces were significantly less likely to develop asthma. Whilst acknowledging that asthma has genetic components some other factors are also crucial. Microbes were the answer. They say that, “In our quest to get rid of the bad bugs we have been getting rid

of the good ones too and we desperately need these. Our modern hyper-clean lifestyles are contributing to the rise of these diseases.”

This “hygiene hypothesis” is not new. In 1989 Prof. David Strachan linked the lack of exposure to germs and the surge in allergies.

Healthy dirt nurtures kids’ immunity, not sterile obsession

When a baby is born, it has a gut full of immature immune cells and it spends the first few months of its life being colonized by bacteria.

If over sanitization prevents this natural occurrence from happening the immune system does not mature and the child is unable to fight off diseases efficiently.

A study by the Centre for Environment and Health in Belgium in2015 concluded that exposure to bleach in the home was associated with a 20% rise in the risk of flu and a 35% rise in recurrent tonsillitis in schoolchildren.

In 2016 the US Food & Drug Administration banned some of the chemicals used in antibacterial products.

For health’s sake let’s get rid of all those products that over sanitize our homes.

Chemical-free household and beauty products from your local health food shop are better for your health and the

environment.

Findlay and Arrieta also advise parents, “let kids play in the dirt. Don’t wash toys unless they are visibly grubby, don’t panic about washing hands unless they are about to eat, relax about sanitizing your home. Oh, and get a dog.

Dogs reduce your children’s risk of getting asthma by 13%. It doesn’t work that way with cats as they are too aloof with kids. Dogs on the other hand, will slobber all over them. Also limit white flour and sugar in kid’s diets as these starve our good gut microbes and limit the use of anti-biotics So, your kids need to get out of doors and get dirty! Over sanitization makes us sick!!

My granny used to say,” A bit of dirt never hurt anyone.”

If you were speaking about Nickey Brennan, the Irish word ‘neart’- strength/ability- would be appropriate. Certainly, when discussing the Kilkenny man’s energy and commitment to complete the most difficult of tasks with consummate ease, 'neart' fits perfectly.

Although Nickey Brennan is retired from professional life since 2014, his current roles as a community volunteer include serving as Chair of The Watergate Theatre Board, presenter on Community Radio Kilkenny City, and Kilkenny’s Age Friendly Ambassador (he was the Chair of the Kilkenny Age Friendly Alliance between 2010 and 2016).

And we are sure there is much more. In addition to his role as presenter on Community radio, Nickey is also an integral part of Let there be light! The official turning on of the floodlights on February 3rd 2007. Therefore, no one was surprised last week, when at the The Gaelic Writers’ Association (GWA) annual awards dinner, in association with the Dalata Hotel Group, Nickey Brennan was inducted into the Hurling Hall of Fame.

Speaking to The Kilkenny Observer Nickey was somewhat surprised on receiving the award. “At this stage of my life I thought that getting awards was well behind me, but I am very grateful for the honour bestowed on me by the GWA." Act F.A.S.T. when stroke strikes HEALTH Although World Stroke Day has passed, the HSE is reminding people across Kilkenny that every second counts when it comes to stroke. Acting quickly can save a life and reduce longterm disability.

A stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is cut off by a blockage or burst blood vessel. It’s the third leading cause of death in Ireland and the main cause of acquired adult neurological disability. More than 90,000

people live with the effects of stroke, and numbers are expected to rise by 58 per cent over the next decade.

Recognising the signs and calling for help immediately can make all the difference.

The HSE’s message is simple — think F.A.S.T. Face: Has the face drooped on one side?

Arm: Is one arm weak or clumsy?

Speech: Is speech slurred or confused?

Professor Rónán Collins, HSE National Clinical Lead for Stroke, said: “Your brain loses about two million cells every minute it is without oxygen. Every second counts. The second you suspect a stroke is the second you dial 999 or 112.”

Kilkenny Great War Memorial

In Kilkenny’s MacDonagh railway station, and at The Peace Park on the River Nore, Kilkenny folk who fought and died in WWI are remembered. The Kilkenny Great War Memorial committee was founded in 2011 to promote and honour the memory of over 800 Kilkenny men and women who gave their lives in WWI for the cause of freedom in Europe. The bloody war would last from 1914 to 1918. The memorial, now a major tourist attraction, was unveiled at the Peace Park in 2018.

All parishes 3,300 men and women from county Kilkenny known to have served in World War I are listed. Over eight hundred of these soldiers died during the conflict. These numbers include representatives from almost every parish in county Kilkenny.

On Sunday November 9th at 3pm, a ceremony will be held at the memorial in memory of those who fell in the Great war. The ceremony will allow Kilkenny people to reflect on Kilkenny’s connection to The Great War to remind ourselves of the bravery, heroism and sacrifice of fondly remembered family and friends, whose actions still resonate.

Armistice on the Western Front On November 11, 1918, after more than four years of horrific fighting and the loss of millions of lives, the guns on the Western Front fell silent. Although fighting continued elsewhere, the armistice between Germany and the Allies was the first step to ending World War I. The global reaction was one of mixed emotions: relief, celebration, disbelief and a profound sense of loss.

The words of Robert Casey, Battery C 124th Field Artillery Regiment, on November 11 1918 seem apt. “And this is the end of it. In three hours the war will be over. It seems incredible even as I write it. I suppose I ought to be thrilled and cheering. Instead I am merely apathetic and incredulous … There is some cheering across the river—occasional bursts of it as the news is carried to the advanced lines. For the most part, though, we are in silence … With all is a feeling that it can’t be true. For months we have slept under the guns…

We cannot comprehend the stillness.”

The Kilkenny Great War Memorial committee extend a welcome to locals and visitors to attend the ceremony which will include prayer, poetry, music, wreath laying and reflection.

Jubilee of Choirs concert for Black Abbey church Galway Baroque Singers The Kilkenny Choir

The Black Abbey church hosts choirs to celebrate 800 years

2025 marks the 800th anniversary of the foundation of the Dominican church, the Black Abbey, in Kilkenny in 1225. As part of the year long commemorations, the Abbey will host a Jubilee of Choirs concert on Saturday 22nd November at 7pm.

This promises to be a spectacular concert in the beautiful and historic setting of the Abbey with over 200 singers coming together on the night from the Kilkenny choir, under the direction of Patrick Rafter; the Tallaght Choral Society and the Galway Baroque Singers.

The Kilkenny choir is a mixed voice choir of over 100 members, which aims to share with audiences a rich variety of choral music. It was founded in 1992 by Philip Edmondson and has become a nationally recognised choral ensemble.

The stunning East facing window will create a beautiful backdrop for the choirs

The Tallaght Choral Society was formed in 1967. A group of singers came together under the direction of Fr. Donal Sweeney OP to form a church choir based in the Dominican Priory. Under a succession of music directors, the small church choir gradually took

The Galway Baroque Singers are a mixed voice choir based in Galway, Ireland, formed in 1983 by Audrey Corbett.

Food & Drink Cheddar & Chive Scones Smart cookies keep on growing RECIPE

As the evenings draw in, there’s nothing like the smell of something savoury baking in the oven. These cheddar and chive scones celebrate simple, local ingredients - Kilkenny’s own butter and farmhouse cheese shine here - and are perfect for sharing over a cuppa or serving alongside a bowl of soup.

Makes: 8 scones Prep time: 15 mins | Bake time: 15–18 mins You’ll need: 225g self-raising flour ½ tsp baking powder 50g cold butter, cubed 100g mature cheddar, grated (plus a little extra for topping) 2 tbsp chopped fresh chives A pinch of salt and black pepper 120ml milk (plus a little extra for brushing) Method: • Preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan) and line a baking tray with parchment.

• In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, salt and pepper. Rub in the butter with

your fingertips until it resembles fine breadcrumbs.

• Stir in the grated cheddar and chives.

• Make a well in the centre and pour in the milk, mixing gently until it forms a soft dough - don’t overwork it.

• Turn out onto a lightly floured surface, pat to about 2cm thick and cut into rounds.

• Place on the tray, brush with milk and sprinkle a little cheddar on top.

• Bake for 15-18 minutes until risen and golden.

Best served warm with a generous smear of butter.

Kilkenny’s late-season forage FOOD As our hedgerows turn bare for winter, pockets of red remain from the glowing rose hips that follow summer’s wild roses.

These little gems, found along country lanes and woodland edges throughout the county, are one of the last foraging treats of the year.

Rose hips are rich in vitamin C and foragers prize them for their tart, fruity flavour, perfect for turning into syrups, jellies and teas. Their gentle sweetness pairs well with winter dishes or a drizzle over porridge or pancakes.

To harvest, wait for the first frosts - it softens the hips and enhances their flavour. Use gloves, as the bushes are thorny, and always leave plenty behind for birds and wildlife. Before cooking, trim the ends and

remove the seeds inside (they contain fine hairs that can irritate the throat if not strained properly).

A simple rose hip syrup is easy to make: simmer cleaned hips with water, strain through muslin, then boil again with sugar until slightly thickened. The result is a ruby-red syrup that captures the taste - and colour — of Kilkenny’s hedgerows.

KO: How did the Cookie Co-op get started?

Mia & Brian: The Cookie Co-op was a bit of a happy accident! During the summer of 2020, at the height of lockdown, we joined Kilkenny County Council’s 13-week Saturday Market just for fun - and

Dominos National Cup CluneTech Kilkenny Stars – 73 Cleveland Rockets – 84 A late change of venue saw the CluneTech Kilkenny Stars welcome one of the top teams in the Division to Kilkenny all the way from Belfast for a cracker of a game at The Presentation Secondary School. The crowd were treated to a high scoring, nail biting, high-quality game of basketball with Cleveland Rockets coming out on top after an epic battle. This game was the first round of the Dominos National Cup so a knockout game.

The first quarter saw The Stars shoot into an early lead with scores from Stephanie Davis and Ava Coogan but the Rockets settled quickly and found their range through Aoibheann Donnelly and Maeve Deery. The Stars lost one of their most in-form players Aoibhin Dunphy early on through illness and this had a visible impact on the team as they tried to adjust to this situation.

The Rockets finished the quarter with a convincing 7 point lead on a 17 v 24 scoreline.

In the second quarter The Stars rallied with some excellent scores from Miah Ryan, Caoimhe Timmons and Gemma Lawlor. The defensive intensity was incredible and The Rockets were made to work very hard for every score they got. The game

was such a high standard with multiple Irish internationals on show from both teams.

The Rockets were the more experienced team and at times their experience showed to keep them ahead in the game when The Stars were on their scoring runs.

The score at half time was 40 v 45 in favour of the visitors with the game set up for a big second half.

The third quarter was similar to the second with both teams going on runs and trading scores, for The Rockets Aoibheann Donnelly

was sublime and was helped with a huge performance from Waterford native Kaitlyn Gloeckner. Stephanie Davis had a huge quarter for Stars and hit 11 of her 29 points in this period.

Caoimhe Timmons was excellent throughout and really shone in this quarter also along with Miah Ryan and Clodagh O’Neill made a big contribution to the game from the bench. The Rockets pushed out their lead to 8 points to lead 58 v 66 heading into the final quarter.

The final quarter was a bit

more stop/start with both teams getting into foul trouble as the pace of the game started to tell on the players. Ava Coogan continued to make her mark on the game with a huge performance at both ends of the floor while Aimee O’Reilly and Miah Ryan were excellent throughout for The Stars also. Unfortunately, it was not to be for The Stars on the night as the Cleveland Rockets kept the scoreboard ticking over to push out the margin to an 11 point victory at the end of the game. This was a great experience for our young CluneTech Kilkenny Stars team as The Rockets would be considered to be in the top 2 teams in this league, they definitely hit the road back to Belfast knowing they were in a battle. Next weekend is a break for The Stars girls from the Dominos Womens Division One league but the U18 Girls are headed to Cavan to compete in the National Cup Competition.

Next up we welcome Moy Tolka Rovers to Kilkenny on Saturday 22nd November who have had a very mixed start to the season but who pose a huge threat. This promises to be a cracker of a game and not to be missed. Your support would be very welcome on the night.

Muckalee Ladies book leinster final spot after goal-laden thriller against Raheny

Muckalee Ladies secured their place in the 2025 AIB Leinster Junior Club Final after a dramatic, high-scoring showdown with Raheny at Abbotstown, emerging victorious by 2-11 to 4-04.

In a contest brimming with intensity, grit, and no shortage of scoring, the Kilkenny side held their nerve to withstand a

determined Raheny outfit and now look ahead to a provincial final date with St Colmcilles next weekend.

The game began at a blistering pace, with both sides signalling their attacking intent from the throw-in. Raheny wasted no time making their presence felt, finding the net early and asserting pressure on the Muckalee defence. Yet the Kilkenny champions refused to be rattled, responding with well-taken points that settled their rhythm. Muckalee’s

patient build-up play enabled them to find pockets of space, and their forwards grew in confidence as the half developed.

Midway through the first half, Muckalee struck for their opening goal, a crucial moment that helped swing momentum in their favour.

The score lifted the team and supporters alike, and shortly afterwards, another spell of disciplined play yielded further points, pushing Muckalee in front. Raheny, as expected, refused to yield,

hitting back with a second goal to close the gap again.

The sides traded scores throughout an enthralling opening period, with little to separate them at the break.

The second half built on that energy, turning into a fierce battle of tactical discipline and execution.

Muckalee worked tirelessly to retain possession, breaking quickly when opportunities arose. Their defence, under heavy pressure at times, showed remarkable composure, challenging

every Raheny surge while transitioning swiftly to turn defence into attack.

Raheny’s ability to strike goals kept them firmly in contention, and they rattled the net again to bring the margin to a single score heading into the final quarter.

With both sets of supporters gripped, the tension was palpable. Yet it was Muckalee who rose to the occasion.

An inspirational second goal combined with accurate shooting from distance helped them edge ahead by

the narrowest of margins.

As Raheny pushed forward desperately in search of a late equaliser, Muckalee’s resilience shone through.

Their back line forced turnovers at key moments, while calm decision-making up the pitch helped them retain possession and run down the clock. When the final whistle sounded, the scoreboard read 2-11 to 4-04 in Muckalee’s favour— confirmation of a hardearned victory in one of the most gripping contests of the campaign.

This result marks a significant milestone for the club, who now advance to the 2025 AIB Leinster Junior Club Final. Their next challenge comes in the form of Meath champions St Colmcilles, a side with their own ambitions of provincial silverware. After such a determined semi-final performance, Muckalee will enter the decider full of belief and momentum.

Well done to both teams for a thrilling afternoon of ladies football. Muckalee now stand just one step away from Leinster glory.

The first semi finalist Keep it Irish owned by local lad Luke Kelly was just pipped by Lethal Flyer owned by another local man Mark Kavanagh to reach Local Working Members final. In the other semi final Flip or flop owned by Tommy Norton was led from slips with Hey Fergie winning comfortably at the top of the field. The final saw Hey Fergie come very strong up the field against Lethal Flyer to take first prize winning the local stake. Edward Connery presented the Kennedy cup to Paddy Flynn and Hey Fergie and they have now qualified for the

National Workers Championship. The Mick and Mary Bergin memorial trial stake derby was won

by Data Bank trained in Tipp by David Flanagan and owned by Paul Horrig Bahamas and the cup was presented by Sponsor Micheal Bergin. The Din and Martin Lennon Oaks Trial Stake was won

The Sean Flynn Memorial and Wall Cup was won by yet another Tipperary couple Billy and Marie Roche with their All Aged Bitch Marshals Caccini, the Cup was presented to the winning owners by Paddy and Collette Flynn.

The final stake of the day Handsome billa Purdon Cup saw Tullaroan man and ardent coursing member take the title with his strong hearted dog Faraway fields. Slipper Brian Doyle gave the start and Nortons dog was led out of the slips by Ridgemount Niall owned by Troys in Old Kilcullen, it was over half way when Faraway Fields got ahead to finish strong and hear the roar of the day when Judge Bernard Goold raised the red flag and Sean Doherty announced Faraway Fields the winner for owner Tommy Norton and his brother Jimmy proud to be first to congratulate Faraway Fields. Chairman Ned Lennon presented the Purdon Cup to this long time Coursing man Tommy Norton with plenty of supporters cheering on the moment of history. KINANE CUP AND MCGREE SHIELD The finals of the Annual Philip Kinane Cup and Colin McGree shield competitions took place on Sunday last at Pairc Lachtain. In the Philip Kinane cup final Lochie McCarthy’s team took on Luke Dermodys side with Lochie’s side coming out winners. In the Colin McGree shield final Bill McGrees team (nephew of the late Colin) his team defeated Max O’Neill’s side in an exciting final.

These competitions are run each year in remembrance of two young lads who died at such a young age and this is the 40th anniversary of the Kinane cup. Eileen Kinane mother of late Philip presented the cup to winning captain Lochie McCarthy while Liam McGree bother of the late Colin presented the shield to his own son Bill.

SQUASH Freshford squash club division1 team are taking on the Curragh team at Freshford squash club this week. The other Freshford side are in the Three Rivers League and play every second week and there promises to be some great games this week at the club.

On Friday last, we were saddened to hear the news of the death of Anne Hehir (Lynch/Moore), sister of club stalwart, Mick Moore. Following funeral mass at St. Canice’s on Sunday, Anne was laid to rest in St. Kieran’s Cemetery.

JAMES STEPHENS GAA AND CAMOGIE CLUB SYMPATHIES In recent days members were saddened to hear of the deaths of Mrs. Sheila O’Neill, widow of the late John O’Neill. Archer’s Crescent and Mrs May Noonan, widow of the late Gay Noonan, Michael Street, Kilkenny. Both ladies were loyal supporters of their husband’s invaluable fundraising work on behalf of the club, particularly the weekly lotto fundraiser, over a long number of years.

Mrs Sheila O’Neill: Sheila passed away peacefully in St. Luke’s Hospital last week with her son Shaun and daughter Annette by her bedside.

Sheila was laid to rest in Foulkstown cemetery following Requiem Mass in St. Fiacre’s Church.

Mrs May Noonan: Sadly, only days previously Mrs. May Noonan, Michael Street passed away peacefully with her daughters Anne and Gemma by her bedside in the care of the staff of Drakelands Nursing Home. May was laid to rest in St. Kieran’s Cemetery following Requiem Mass in St. John’s Church.

NEW MINISTRY OF CATECHIST The Diocese of Ossory is looking to the future. In his Pastoral letter, Bishop Niall writes of the real challenges being faced, including fewer priests, increasing secularism and possible changes in how faith is supported in schools. In his letter, the bishop invites parishioners across the diocese to pray, discern and consider whether they might be called to this new ministry. A period of discernment will begin in Advent leading to a two year formation programme starting in September 2026.

GATHERING GROUP The gathering group continues to flourish with members meeting each Wednesday in the hall. It promises to be a busy time for the group as they finalise details for the Christmas Dinner and the shopping trip. Also in the pipeline is the annual demonstration of Christmas table centre pieces with AnneMarie Mahon. A representative of the Citizens Information Centre will pay a visit in December.

ART GROUP The Art Group was represented at the KCETB Exhibition Morning held in The Community Hall Thomastown on Thursday last by members, Daphne Hunt and Elma Kharaghani. The group has been supported by the KCETB for many years and this means a lot to the members.

Christmas Cards are now in the local shops with some new additions. As usual the cards contain artwork of members and feature many local scenes. This year the Carlow Kilkenny Home Care Team will share in the proceeds.

The Christmas Fest will be held in the Community Hall on Sunday, 30th November from 11 til 5pm.

EAST END Great 2-1 win for the Girls 14s. Unlucky to be 1-0 down at half time they came out a different team in the second half and turned the game around. Two great long range efforts from Lily Mai Meighan grabbed all 3 points.

CAMOGIE AGM Camogie AGM takes place on Friday 21st of November, now at the earlier time of 7pm. As a club, we have made huge progress and have achieved great success at various grades. This

doesn’t happen without the help and support of a valued committee and management team. We are looking for people to get involved and bring new ideas. If you have a daughter who benefits from having a very successful camogie club on their doorstep, please come on board and help us keep it that way. Thank you!

SIGNAGE CAMPAIGN The Bennettsbridge GAA Pitch signage campaign is experiencing great success with new signs having been added in the past couple of weeks There are still places available and many thanks to all the business owners who have supported so far. AGM 2025 This year’s AGM will take place on Saturday November 22nd in the clubhouse. The Bórd na n-Óg AGM will take place on Tuesday November 25th of November at 8 pm. All members are urged to attend.

WALK AND PRAYER SERVICE Jo Jo Dullard is missing 30 years this November. Jo Jo was 21 years of age at the time of her disappearance. BALLYRAGGET BALLYOUSKILL Circle of Friends Ballyragget are holding a Cake/ Craft Sale, raffle and coffee morning on Sunday 9th November at 10.30am in The Canon Malone Hall. All proceeds going to The Senior Citizens Christmas Party. Donations of baked goods would be greatly appreciated and can be dropped in to the hall on the morning of the event before the sale starts. MULLINAVAT MASS OF CELEBRATION A special Mass to mark the ‘semi-retirement’ of the Very Reverend Liam Barron, Parish Priest will be celebrated in St. Beacon’s Church at 7.30pm on Saturday, 8th November. Everyone is welcome to come and give thanks and to celebrate this milestone in his ministry. He will continue to reside in Mullinavat as Pastor Emeritus.

CONAHY HURLING AND FOOTBALL The under-21 hurlers played host to neighbours St. Patrick’s (Ballyragget) in the JJ Kavanagh Under-21 Roinn D county semi-final in Jenkinstown on Sunday afternoon last. The Ballyragget men were very effective in attack during the opening half, scoring four goals to lead by 4-8 to 1-10 at half time. Conahy battled gamely all through, including in the second half, but the concession of those early goals left them with too much to do, and St. Patrick’s advanced to the county final on a 5-16 to 2-16 score line. Thanks to all the players for their efforts over the last few weeks, along with their management team of Christy Kennedy, Seamus Óg Brennan and Tom Nolan.

Prior to the under-21 game, the under-16 footballers faced Emeralds in the Roinn C championship quarter-final in Jenkinstown. In a very entertaining game, Conahy scored a good win on a 4-9 to 2-8 score line. They now look forward to a county semi final with Blacks and Whites in Skeoughvasteen on this Sunday morning at 10.30 a.m.

CAMOGIE The under-22 Camogie girls will play Dicksboro in the Roinn A championship quarter-final on this Sunday morning, November 9th at 11.00 a.m.

AIB Leinster Club SHC Quarter Final Shamrocks Ballyhale VS Kilcormac Killoughey Having secured a 21st County title last time out, Shamrocks Ballyhale make the familiar next step and begin the AIB Leinster Club Championship campaign, hoping to claim the O’Neill Cup for a 13th time. This is a journey that Noreside’s most successful club knows all too well, and having got their hands on the Tom Walsh Cup for the first time since 2022 and you can be sure Henry Shefflin’s charges will be keen to extend the club season into the first month of next year.

The defeat of O’Loughlin Gaels illustrated that this Shamrocks team are beginning to get their mojo back and that could spell danger to the other contenders in Leinster, including the reigning provincial and All-Ireland winners Na Fianna of Dublin. Should all go according to plan, the men from the Capital should be the South Kilkenny sides opponent in the decider for the O’Neill Cup. But that’s a little bit down the road and for now, the focus is squarely on Sunday’s encounter in UPMC Nowlan Park which see’s Offaly champions Kilcormac Killoughey roll into town for what promises to be a fascinating encounter.

The man steering the Faithful County side is no stranger to the Noresiders, and Declan Laffan will hope to mastermind a victory at Kilkenny headquarters this weekend, Tipperary native Laffan, who was part of Liam Cahill’s backroom team that delivered the biggest prize in hurling, the Liam MacCarthy Cup to the Premier County back in July. Having secured the Sean Robbins Cup for a third consecutive year, Kilcormac Killoughey (K-K) should provide a thorough test of Shamrocks Ballyhale’s credentials when they clash on Sunday. In Adam Screeney and Charlie Mitchell, K-K have two talented and sharp

intercounty forwards, who will trouble most defensive units. The former has been on the radar for the past couple of seasons and possesses real quality and can have a big say in the outcome of any game that he plays in. Henry and his management team will have been reviewing the footage of their quarter-final opponents, and in particular K-K’s Molloy Environmental Systems county final victory over Shinrone, who limited Screeney to just two points from play. If Shamrocks can do a similar job, this will boost their chances of claiming a provincial last four berth against the winners of the Clough Ballacolla/ Castletown-Geoghegan last eight clash. As mentioned, Screeney has a serious partner in crime in the form of Charlie Mitchell, who put in a POTM performance in their county final, hitting 1-5 in a sparkling display. Henry and Co. Will need to get their match-up right to try and stifle this potent

Having returned from travelling, Corcoran has slotted right back into the groove with Shamrocks and adds plenty to Henry’s side. Lots of bodies will flood the middle third of UPMC Nowlan Park on Sunday and the Kilkenny team will hope that the quality of their stickmen will give them the edge.

experienced custodian and has been crucial in his side’s domination of club hurling in the Faithful County since 2012.

Indeed, the goalkeeper notched three vital points in their latest Sean Robbins Cup triumph, with his monstrous free from inside his own ‘65 in the last few minutes of normal time, helping to settle his sides nerves, as Shinrone’s charge was halted. Shamrocks will be aware that Slevin is adept at tagging on placed balls from distance and will need to ensure they are as disciplined as possible on Sunday. K-K are the county champions at minor, U20 and senior level in Offaly, a sure sign that the club are getting things right at all age groups. Club success, feeds into the intercounty setup, and the likes of Screeney, Mitchell, James Mahon, Colin Spain are regulars, while the talented Brecon Kavanagh is developing into a classy centre back and making the senior

intercounty panel.

Henry Shefflin will have allowed his side to enjoy their 21st Tom Walsh Cup success before getting back to business in preparation for Sundays provincial quarter final. The legendary hurling icon has continually stated that the aim amongst everyone at Páirc na Seamróg this season was to perform to the levels they know they can and get back to winning some games. That ethos has stood to the south Kilkenny side as they have improved with every game, culminating with their comprehensive county final victory over the last side to beat them in a Tom Walsh Cup final, O’Loughlin Gaels. it isn’t a coincidence that having Ronan Corcoran, Brian Cody and Joey Holden back in the team has helped those around them raise their standards and deliver a 21st county title. In Joey Holden, they have a player that was won all possible in the game and still shows the dedication and hunger required to succeed in today’s game. There weren’t many better than the classy full-back in their win over the St John’s Park side last time out. One player who clearly benefits from the calming presence of Joey, is Killian Corcoran who is another

player, thriving in the Shamrocks rearguard. Talking of calmness, Dean Mason’s continues to play an integral part in his team’s progression and success.

Shamrocks will hope that Evan Shefflin has recovered sufficiently to resume his wing back duties, alongside Darragh Corcoran and the evergreen Richie Reid.

Again, the half back line is one of the greatest strengths of Henry’s side and when they are all firing, it provides a great platform for the headline makers ahead of them. The trio of TJ, Adrian Mullen and Eoin Cody don’t need any introduction, and we hope they are on song against Offaly’s finest. Two other members of the attacking unit, Niall Shortall and Liam Barron have been quietly going about their business this season, both adding much to the forward division. Without Shortall’s pressure and skill to dispossess Huw Lawlor, Eoin Cody doesn’t raise that green flag. Getting through a ton of work and registering the odd score, Liam Barron is another cog in the Shefflin machine. The path to provincial glory starts this weekend. Shamrocks Ballyhale will hope to take the first steps with victory over Kilcormac Killoughey on Sunday.
