he Screwdriver magazine(newsletter) bearing the name of the GESA notice board is an engineering based online publication that features latest information,activities, events worth mentioning, and outlines scholarship opportunities. Furthermore it captures health and safety tips and also a portion for advertisement of students products and services.

This publication seeks to inform,connect and inculcate the attitude of knowing what happens in your jurisdiction and beyond.

Thumbs up to the executive body, the media and publicity committee for liaising with the office of the General Secretary for putting this together and making it happen.

Report on GESA Bursary A total of 140 students successfully passed and thus would benefit from the bursary. The money would not be shared equally but shared based on how needy the student is. We have 23,67 and 50 students getting 400, 300 and 250 cedis respectively based on their needs.

PROFILE OF THE PROVOST P

rof Mark Adom Asamoah was appointed the provost of the College of Engineering, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST ) in August 2016 and reappointed in 2019 serving a second term.Prior to his appointment as provost, he was Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Geo-Engineering, Head of the Department of Petroleum Engineering and Sectional Head in structural Engineering.

Prof Adom Asamoah is a distinguished Fulbright Fellow, Commonwealth Scholar and British Council Scholar. He obtained his Bsc. in Civil Engineering from KNUST in 1993; an Msc.in Structural Steel Design from the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of London in 1995 and a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Bristol, Uk in 2005.

As Provost, he has shown academic leadership by securing funding of over 10,000, 000 USD in support of research and teaching, introduction of new undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, the upgrade of laboratory equipment for teaching and research and expanded the academia-industry collaboration of the College. He has also secured scholarships for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, established a Students Innovation Centre and a fund to help the needy Students of the College.

REPORT ON THE GESA SKILLS TRAINING

I

NTRODUCTION The introduction of GESA Skills training aims at adding value to the students under the college of engineering and to equip them for the world market. In GESA today, so many programmes have been designed and implemented with the aim of building the capacity of the students in different area of development to enhance effectiveness in their field of study. Computer literacy or skills training programme is one of such opportunities; it is a capacity building strategy that empowers individuals to become knowledgeable in the use of computer applications. In other words, a person who knows how to use the softwares to complete any given task is a computer literate.

OBJECTIVES

The main aim or goal of the Skill training programme is to capacitate the Students in the following skills, Artificial Intelligence , Solid Works(3D modelling), Python Programing and website development.

OUTCOME OF THE PROGRAMME SO FAR The training process was incredible and interesting, as the interest of the learners are on the rise and also the set of assignments encourages them to do more.

Tutors and training outlines structured by the I.T committee that covers all the four skills were distributed to each participant before the start of the process. Short Videos required by every student to understand were given out. The programme targeted all the engineering students under the college of engineering

REPORT ON THE GESA BURSARY O

n the 15th of November,2019, the GESA Welfare committee chaired by Master Mel Dickson issued out forms out to all Engineering students, male or female, who felt they needed some support to make their life a bit comfortable in school. A total of 340 forms were made available to be picked by students between the 18th and 19th of November. A total of 340 students picked the forms and hence applied for the bursary. All applicants were to be interviewed later.

The vetting was a two-day process and it took place between 25th and 26th of November, 2019. Madam Theodore Oduro and Madam Victoria De-Graft Adjei who were the counsellors, helped with the interview and they managed to separate the students who needed the bursary from those who wanted it. After the interview process, those who qualified but are on high-

THE JUDICIAL COMMISSION REPORT

T

he judicial commission of GESA is a body mandated to exercise judicial power of the association (GESA). Under the auspices of Master Jim Gray Koranchie, the Chairman.

The 2019/2020 judicial consisted of 14 Members including the Chairperson.

“Before we started work as a committee, we set out some goals and this was to ensure the commission remains relevant, recognised and function independently, Fast forward, together with my abled committee members we have achieved our goal and did better than we planned” ”We came up with the first ever commission logo and also set up a review and amendment commit-

tee to do some constitutional reforms I must say the committee did a marvelous job with the help of external support from the SRC Legal Affairs Commissioner, Master Marcus Boafo and His lordship Michael Gyan, SRC Judicial chairperson who worked tirelessly in making the reforms a success. ELECTION REPORT T

his election was yet another milestone in the evolution of our democracy. From the time of founding our association, we students in GESA have demonstrated that we are able and willing to work with one another to build an association that can proudly take its rightful place among the associations of KNUST. As much as our society has changed since those early days, the spirit of celebrating our democracy remains the same.

The contestation for each vote may be robust but it is healthy, from filing of nominations, signing the Electoral Code of Conduct, Vetting and screening of aspirants, Manifesto reading and campaigning, but overall this election was accomplished peacefully.

The impressive voter turnout in this year’s election is the best reward for the commission with about 15% increase.

The Commission is satisfied that this increase is in part attributable to our intensified democracy education and

sensitization.

We learn lessons from each election.

Enhancements such as increase in the number of voting centers, increase of the number of laptops at voting centers which sped up the voting process, special voting to enfranchises students who would otherwise be unable to vote.

Everyone who voted was answering the call to “voting is the expression of our commitments to ourselves, one another, GESA, KNUST, this country and the world” I want to use this opportunity to thank the executive committee of GESA, the SRC electoral commission, my able electoral commissioners and all stakeholders who toiled, made sacrifices and dedicated their time to make this election a successful one.

To the newly elected executives congratulations. Leadership they say isn’t about the next election but the next generations. This should be a time for optimism and time for awakening the lost hope in student leadership.

Long live GESA,Long live KNUST.

The SENATE Report T

his report seeks to disclose the happenings and achievements of this administration during the 2019/2020 academic year.

It is a privilege and an honor for us to be given the opportunity to serve as the leaders of the legislative body of GESA. We had a vision to making the GESA senate relevant to the stalwarts of GESA, we couldn’t meet our expectation per the plans we had for the office but I believe so strongly that we have raised the standard and we are very proud of that.

Achievements

The house was successfully able to go through the amended GESA constitution and passed a vote to accept it on the 7th of March, 2020. The Constitution was thus effected three days later.

The house was also able to unveil a senate logo, the first of its kind.

The house, with the help of the NUGS General Secretary, was able to obtain NUGS representatives at the department level, to represent their various departments during every NUGS general assembly.

The GESA financial secretary presented the budget for the year and was questioned by the house.

The house addressed certain administrative challenges encountered by the various departments.

Conclusion
