Introduction Industrial Ethernet networks require extended reach for data transmission. These networks consist of multiple data terminal equipment (DTE) and data communication equipment (DCEs) which are integrated together.

To transmit data from DTE to DCEs, Ethernet-compliant transmission media such as copper cables, fiber optics cables, etc are utilized.

Media Converters are used for data conversion. From DTE, data signals are transmitted in electric form therefore, electric-optical data conversion is required.

In order to achieve ethernet network extension, serial-to-fiber media converters are used. These devices enable communication between DTE and DCE. Let us now discuss about the role of Serial-to-Fiber Media Converters in industrial Ethernet network monitoring and extension.

Features of Serial to Fiber Media Converters Fiber optic serial data converter modems are compatible with point-to-point link, redundant ring, or multidrop networks.

These devices are compact in size, and it is an advantage for applications where space is a constraint.

These devices feature multiple connections, therefore they can be connected to data terminals or other communication equipment.

These Micromodems are used in various challenging applications for safe operations.

Role of Serial-to-Fiber Media Converters in Extension of Ethernet Networks According to the topology or mode of configuration the functionality of serial-to-fiber converters may differ. There are two types of modes namely: Pair Mode of Configuration - In pair mode of configuration, the converter is connected between a pair of DTE and DCE i.e. between a source computer and a serial device. The transmission can be established for 20km Ring Mode of Configuration - In this mode of configuration, multiple DTE and DCEs are connected within a ring-topology. This can be utilized for nearly 100km of the fiber transmission link.
