Wally Cleaver INTERVIEW WITH ACTOR

TONY DOW While doing a long overdue cleanup of files on my computer to free up space, I came across some fun “Oldies” interviews. This one in particular from 2012 is for those of us who grew up watching the feel-good family TV shows from the early 60’s (black and white of course) that always had a happy ending and a life lesson learned during the episode.

Nostalgia... Shows like this from childhood bring to mind simpler times and still make me smile.

RHETT PALMER: I’m seated with Tony Dow from Leave It to Beaver at the annual Nostalgia Convention here in Maryland. Let me ask you: do people ask you to say “Come on, Beav.”

TONY DOW: Yes, and “Knock it off, Squirt.” Of course, that’s an Eddie Haskell line. But, you know, “Hi Mom! Hi Dad!” That kind of stuff.

Do you keep in touch with Jerry Mathers who played Beaver?

Yes, we do, when we can. We live on opposite sides of the city. He just got married couple months ago, and I went to the wedding. And we do appearances occasionally and sign pictures for a couple hours.

So you really are like brothers?

Was there a bonding that took place – Yes, especially because of our show.

In the 70’s, like ‘‘77- ‘78, Jerry and I did some dinner theatre and we put a production together and went on the road. We stayed on the road for 16 months doing dinner theatre, doing the same show over and over again. So, yes, we bonded during that period, too.

Tony Dow is one of the stars of Leave It to Beaver, the brother Wally Cleaver. What was the real Tony Dow like growing up? I think probably a lot like Wally. I mean, the writers and producers were real aware of the fact I probably wasn’t the greatest actor in town, because starting out I really didn’t know much about it.

And I think if I’d been a studious guy with glasses and read a couple books a week, Wally would have been head of the debate team or something like that, as opposed to being head of the basketball team.

That’s because of my athletic ability, I was always very athletic. So I think they tailored the show to the guy, which was great for me. It made it easier for Interview by Rhett Palmer me to feel comfortable.

the older brother, Harry said, “I just worked with this kid. He’s kind of raw, but you might want to take a look at him.” So, I went in and I lucked out and I got the role. And so that was the beginning of it.

Luck of the draw changed your whole life. Absolutely. And what’s funny is, I had gotten couple of roles at the same time. So my mom and I were having dinner at the Hitching Post and she said, “Well, you know, you’ve got a chance to either be a Mouseketeer or be Boy on Tarzan, or this show Leave It to Beaver. What do you think?”

And I said, “Well, you know, Tarzan sounds like fun.”

And she said, “Well, I think that the Beaver show would be better.” So that one decision there guided my whole life.

How did you get the gig? How old were you? I was 12.

They’d done the pilot and they were replacing the older brother and the father. And I’d done a pilot at Screen Gems and the executive producer, Harry Ackerman, was assigned to come over and be executive producer on Leave It to Beaver for the first couple years to get it going. They’d already seen like 8,000 kids, so when it came time to see boys for

What do you think would have happened to Tony Dow had he not become famous from Leave It to Beaver? What would you have done with your life, do you think? That’s a good question. I think I would have either become some sort of a designer, maybe an architect. I might have become a coach, a swimming coach, diving coach. I played a lot of volleyball, you know, and played in national championships. Maybe a volleyball coach.

Who knows?

For a guy like me, I had an older brother, I had a Wally figure. I’ve met a number of celebrities over the years, but I tell you, when I found out I was going to meet you I was excited. You are Wally Cleaver. You are my childhood, you are the guy I looked up to along with Beaver, and you always had a little bit of wisdom there. That was all written for me, you know. That wisdom didn’t come from me.

Have you ever felt confined, like, “Oh, God, they’ve just married me to this time and this age and there’s a lot more to me as Tony Dow than Wally Cleaver.” Well, I had to handle a lot of issues just like that right after the show when I was trying to become a

serious actor. And then when I was directing, I also ran up against that occasionally.

Let’s talk about Ward Cleaver, the actor who played Ward Cleaver. He actually didn’t want to work with children actors, did he? I know! Isn’t that a kick?

And that’s the one thing he’s remembered for now. I know! He’d roll over in his grave, I think. He played Michael Shayne, a B-movie character detective, and he kind of fancied himself as an actor. And he became a Methodist minister and he was very serious, very serious. So to be playing second fiddle –

o you mean in real life he became a Methodist minister?

Yes.

Ward did? Yes. One of the stories is, he had this congregation in this poor part of town and they weren’t doing well, so he started doing some acting to supplement the dough for the congregation and keep them afloat for awhile.

But he wasn’t like Barbara. She was warm and fuzzy and lovely and beautiful and wonderful.

You guys were tight until the end; right? Yes. You know, Hugh wasn’t warm and fuzzy, but he was definitely a man’s man. He played a lot of golf.

Maybe the fact that he didn’t want to work with kids, maybe that worked to his benefit.

Because when you think of Ward Cleaver, he’d always be admonishing you and the Beav.

And in real life he had kids, and I knew his kids, and you know, he definitely wasn’t as good a father in real life as he was on the Beaver show. But I don’t know any fathers who were.

Those lines of wisdom were written for him. Exactly, exactly.

e always seemed to be able to say the right thing. I really think he was the best father on television, as I think Barbara was a wonderful mom.

Tell us about your relationship with June Cleaver, Barbara Billingsley.

We were very good friends.

We’d go out to dinner, you know. And then her husband passed away and she got very depressed.

And I was doing dinner theatre shows -- this was after Jerry and I had done this 16-month tour, and so I asked her if she wanted to come back and do Come Blow Your Horn with me at this dinner theatre. So she came back and we did the show for six months.

She met a guy who was a sculptor, and when they would come over to my house he would be very complimentary. He’s the guy who turned me on to sculpting and doing bronzes out of my pieces.

So he helped me along a lot in my sculpting career.

You later on went to become a director. You had a successful series with Coach. What other series did you work on that we might know? I did Babylon 5 and I did some Deep Space 9, and I did some Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and Swamp Thing. The Secret Life of an FBI Family. I probably did 10 or 12 shows, multiple episodes.

Explain what your schedule was like for Leave It to Beaver. We’d start out reading on a Monday, we’d read the show for the writers. Then there’d be a discussion and they would rewrite the show based on what they heard at the reading.

We’d rehearse all day Tuesday, and that’s where we blocked the show. And then the producers would come down and watch the show as we did a run through of it. And then they’d do rewrites, and 8 June 2024 / ISSUE 161 / Vero’s Voice

then we’d do three days of shooting.

So we knew our stuff so well, I’d say at least 70% of the time we’d do it on one take. So you know, it went fast for what we were doing.

Note: Tony Dow passed away in 2022 at the age of 77 after being diagnosed with liver cancer. After “Leave it to Beaver” he had countless TV roles over the years, was a director and producer, a visual effects designer, homebuilder, woodworker, painter, and became an accomplished sculptor.

Tony Dow suffered for years with depression.

After speaking at an event he said, “You know, the irony is the fact that I was in a TV program that epitomized the supposed ideal world of the ‘50’s, and here I am suffering from depression. But I’m just one of millions.”

Tony Dow quote: “My goal from the time I was old enough to think about things was to live a creative life.”

And he certainly did.

Leaving a Lasting Legacy for Your Loved Ones

(Without Uncle Sam Taking a Big Bite)

et’s face it: retirement is a time to enjoy the fruits of your labor. You’ve worked hard and saved diligently, and now you deserve to relax, travel, and spend quality time with loved ones. But have you considered what happens to your hard-earned nest egg after you’re gone? Estate planning might not be the most exciting topic, especially regarding inheritance tax considerations. Still, it’s a crucial step in ensuring your legacy goes where you want it to – straight to your loved ones, not Uncle Sam’s pocket.

Are You Subject to Inheritance Tax? The good news is that the federal estate tax exemption is quite high in 2024, sitting at a generous $13.6 million per person (that’s $27.2 million for married couples!). So, chances are, your estate won’t be subject to this tax. However, there are a few things to keep in mind: • The Exemption Can Change: This high exemption is set to expire at the end of 2025. It’s always best to plan for the future, and it’s possible the exemption could drop significantly in the coming years. If it does expire at the end of 2025 and Congress does nothing, it will go back to its pre-TCJA levels of $5.6 million per individual, adjusted for inflation from 2017.

• State Taxes Exist: Some states have their own estate or inheritance taxes with lower thresholds. Be sure to research the specific rules in your state.

• Your Estate Might Be Larger Than You Think: Your house, retirement accounts, investments, and even life insurance policies all contribute to your estate’s value. Don’t underestimate how quickly these assets can add up.

Taking Action: Strategies for Tax-Efficient Estate Planning Even if you think your estate falls below the current exemption, here are some strategies you can consider to minimize your tax burden and maximize your loved ones’ inheritance: • Review Your Retirement Accounts: Traditional IRAs and 401(k)s are taxed upon withdrawal by your beneficiaries. Consider converting some or all of these accounts to Roth IRAs, where contributions are taxed upfront, but future withdrawals are tax-free (including for your beneficiaries).

• Utilize Lifetime Gifting: The IRS allows you to gift up to $18,000 per person annually (in 2024) without incurring any gift tax. This means that if you are married, both you and your spouse are entitled to that amount, giving you a total of $36,000 as a couple to gift in 2024. The maximum amount is per recipient as well. So, between the two of you, you could gift $36,000 to each person you choose. For example, if you have children who are married, each of you could give $36,000 to each person in 2024, and if you have grandchildren, you could gift up to $36,000 to each of them in 2024. This is a great way to gradually transfer wealth to your heirs and reduce the overall size of your taxable estate.

• Life Insurance Planning: Life insurance can be an effective tool for mitigating estate tax costs. Life insurance proceeds pass on income tax-free. If your estate has the potential of triggering Federal or State estate taxes, then considering a life insurance policy to cover those anticipated taxes can be worth a look. This type of planning was much more popular when estate tax thresholds were much lower in the past.

Remember, the high Federal exemption that is currently in place will expire in 2025 unless Congress keeps it at this level.

The Long Game tells the true story of a group of Mexican-American high school-age golf lovers in the 50s. The film is based on the novel by Humberto G. Garcia titled Mustang Miracle (2010), and was released in theaters in April 2024.

JB Peña (Julio Quintana) is the superintendent of schools in the small border town of Del Rio, Texas. He is also a golf lover and hopes to become a member of the elite Del Rio Golf Club. However, it’s an all-white club and exclusive members “just aren’t used to seeing Mexicans on the course.”

JB soon meets a group of students who caddy at the club. His chance encounter with them happens when a golf ball crashes through his car window as he drives along a country road with no golf course around. It turns out, the boys had bet the best player in the group that he couldn’t hit a moving car. JB tracks down the boys, but he ends up more impressed with their golf ability than he is upset about his car window (or his head).

JB learns of a make-shift course the five boys built in the bush, since they, too, are excluded from playing on the golf course where they caddy due to their ethnicity. Impressed, he asks them if they’d like to play in a new school golf team he plans to start.

JB recruits the town’s golf pro, Frank Mitchell (Dennis Quaid), a fellow World War II veteran who he served with in the Marine Infantry to help coach the unlikely new team.

Mitchell is reluctant until he sees the boys’ golf course, and their swings.

Together they face insurmountable obstacles. To start, they have to play with old discarded clubs they found in the woods at the golf course, while their competitors—wealthy, all-white teams, many of whom are sons of the club members—have the best equipment. But JB teaches the boys honor and dignity despite prejudice and unfairness, and that it’s not tough equipment that will win golf games.

When they arrive at their first golf tournament they are told by the surprised leaders, “We assumed you were American.” I loved JB’s response: “You assumed right.” espite the many challenges, the “Mustangs” go on to win the 1957 Texas State High School Golf Championship—their first year playing, and on the very course they weren’t allowed to play!

This film is about so much more than golf. It is full of drama, emotion, life lessons, and some great humor, particularly on the part of the groundskeeper, Pollo (Cheech Marin). All the casting and acting are great. I loved the scenery, the music, the cars, and the patriotism.

The Long Game is a refreshing family movie of triumph against all odds, of not allowing the voices inside or outside your head to stop you from what’s possible. If you like underdog stories, you’ll love this movie. You will fall in love with the characters as well as the character-building lessons the film conveyed.

Definitely add this one to your summer watch list!

FAVORITES CHICKEN CACCIATORE This is one of Rhett’s all-time favorite meals, and is also a big hit with company. As with most Italian dishes, the flavors improve over time.

4-6 servings INGREDIENTS 3 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs Salt and pepper 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided 1 large onion, diced 8 ounces sliced mushrooms 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 28-ounce can diced tomatoes (undrained) 1 cup dry white wine * Half a small can of tomato paste (about 3 ounces) 1 green pepper, seeded, cut into 1” squares 2 red bell peppers, seeded, cut into 1” squares 1 large carrot, peeled and diced 2 teaspoons dried oregano 1 teaspoon dried thyme 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped Red pepper flakes, optional Grated Parmesan cheese Fresh basil leaves 22 June 2024 / ISSUE 161 / Vero’s Voice

DIRECTIONS 1. Remove some of the fat from the chicken with a sharp knife. Rinse and pat dry; season with salt and pepper. Heat 1 and 1/2 tablespoons olive oil in a large deep skillet or Dutch oven over mediumhigh heat. Add chicken and lightly brown on both sides, in batches if necessary. Remove from pan.

2. Add remaining 1 and 1/2 tablespoons olive oil to the pan along with the onion and cook over medium-high heat until softened, about 3 minutes.

Add mushrooms and cook until they start to turn color. Add garlic and cook one minute more.

3. Return chicken to the pan. Stir in tomatoes, wine, and paste; add peppers, carrot, and herbs. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, cover and simmer 30 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through.** Internal temp should be 165F. 4. Top with parmesan and garnish with basil leaves. * The recipe calls for wine, which I seldom have in the house. I use water. ** I simmer everything on low for at least an hour. We like it when the chicken easily falls apart, so simmering time depends on the size of the chicken pieces. Adjust the liquid if necessary by adding water, half cup at a time, or more tomato paste to thicken.

RIGATONI WITH TOMATO SAUCE One of my favorite comfort foods I’ve been making for years. It’s from a well-worn paperback cookbook by Rick Marzullo O’Connell which came out in 1991. The cookbook is still available which tells you how good his nofuss Italian recipes are. This is my go-to tomato sauce recipe… simple and satisfying.

Serves 6

ITALIAN SAUSAGE OVER SPAGHETTI WITH OIL AND GARLIC We both love this one. Maybe it’s all the garlic .. or the sausage .. or the cheese.

Serves 6 INGREDIENTS 1 pound Italian sausage links, mild or hot 12 garlic cloves 1/4 cup olive oil 4 quarts of water 1 pound spaghetti 1 and 1/2 cups chicken broth or stock 1 cup finely chopped Italian parsley Freshly ground black pepper Grated Parmesan cheese 10-ounce package frozen peas, optional *

INGREDIENTS 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 3 large garlic cloves, minced 1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes in puree 1 cup water 1 teaspoon dried oregano Pinch of red pepper flakes 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 pound rigatoni 1 cup grated Romano cheese Fresh basil leaves, for garnish DIRECTIONS 1. In a nonreactive large saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and cook 2 to 3 minutes, until the onion softens and garlic is fragrant.

2. Add tomatoes with puree, water, oregano, and pepper flakes.

3. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low, and cook partially covered 30 minutes. Season with salt.

4. Meanwhile, cook the rigatoni in a large pot of boiling salted water until tender but slightly firm, 12 to15 minutes. Drain.

5. Measure about 2 cups of sauce into a large pasta serving bowl. Add the pasta and toss with the sauce to coat. Pour remaining sauce over the top and sprinkle with 1/2 cup of the cheese and basil. Pass remaining cheese on the side.

DIRECTIONS 1. Cook the sausage. Place sausage in a large nonstick frying pan and add enough water to cover the sausage by half. Bring up to a boil, reduce heat to low, cover and cook about an hour, until most of the water has cooked away and the sausage is fork tender. Remove the lid and turn up the heat to medium so the water will evaporate. Brown the sausage on all sides. It should be super tender at this point. Slice each link at an angle into halves or thirds and set aside.

2. Prepare the pasta. Meanwhile, peel the garlic cloves. Mince 6 of them and set aside. Slice remaining garlic.

3. Heat oil in a small skillet and cook sliced garlic over medium heat stirring occasionally until just turning golden. Remove from heat and set aside. Be careful not to burn.

4. Bring water and salt to a boil in a large pot. Add spaghetti and cook until just tender but firm. Do not overcook. Drain the pasta well and transfer to a pot.

5. Add the chicken broth to the pasta and simmer until most of the broth has absorbed, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes.

6. Stir in the heated olive oil and sliced garlic, then the minced garlic and parsley. Toss thoroughly.

7. Divide the pasta evenly in shallow soup bowls. Pour remaining broth over pasta, top with sausage and add a grinding of black pepper and Parmesan cheese. Serve immediately. * We like this with peas. Add them towards the end so they don’t overcook.

Rosé, Rosé, Rosé

S

ummer is upon us and now is the perfect time to enjoy rosé wines from across the world.

Maybe you’ll enjoy a nice palehued dry rosé from Provence, France, the birthplace of French wine.

Even though white and red wines are made here, 75% of all the wine produced is rosé.

These wines are made with, at minimum, two different grape varieties: Cinsault, Grenache, Mouvrèdre, Syrah and even a little Tibouren. The wines are never blended between white and red, but are made using the saignée (or bleeding) method. The vintner starts by making a red wine as usual. As the wine begins to take on some color from the skins, the juice is drawn off to create a light rosé.

The vintner is always challenged as to how long the skins should stay in contact with the

juice to create the color. So there goes the myth that the darker the rosé, the sweeter the wine – definitely not true!

However, we might get an idea about the body of a wine based on the depth of the color. In general, lighter color wines are bright and crisp while darker wines tend to have more fruit and body. You can expect these wines to have a wide range of bouquets and flavors, such as delicate white flowers and passionfruit on the nose, with exotic fruits, orange peel and peach on the palate. These are great selections at the dining table when paired with seafood, sushi, and Thai dishes.

Not to be outdone, the rosé from Willamette Valley made from the Pinot Noir grape always leaves me wanting more. These wines can be described as electric with aromas of Crenshaw melon, orange peel and cranberries. We can even find Bing cherry, tangerine and bubble gum in the better-quality wines. The Soter Vineyard Rosé is an excellent choice.

But the choices of rosé do not stop there. There is a wine from Sancerre, France from producer Joseph Mellot which truly delivers with Le Rabault Rosé. This wine is refreshing with crushed strawberries dominating. The palate is fresh, crunchy and supple, and opens with strawberries and a hint of minerality. A beautiful presence in the mouth which lingers with an elegant freshness.

To show you the complex world of rosé, I recommend a vibrant wine from Bekaa Valley, Lebanon. The Musar Jeune Rosé, made with 85% Cinsault and 15% Mourvèdre, fills the glass with pomegranate, rose petals and honeysuckle. On the palate there are flavors of mandarin orange, green apples and rosewater. It is impressive. A wine you can enjoy as an aperitif, with grilled shrimp marinated with oregano, sweet paprika, fresh garlic, olive oil, and served with a fresh wedge of lime.

I’ve also enjoyed rosé from Italy, South Africa, Australia, Spain, California and New York. Experience the wonderful rosés from around the world this summer. It’s the thing to do!

Looking Within

I used to be a character. Now, I have character.

It starts with honesty. No matter how you get there, the moment comes when you have to look at yourself honestly. What do you see?

There were times in my life that I believed I was unworthy. There were times in my life that I believed I was exceptional. Usually, when my assessment was swinging toward one of those extremes, I wasn’t being honest. Maybe I didn’t have the capacity at that point. My self-view was based on what I saw in others.

Were they better or worse than me?

In seeking a comparison, I lost all possibility of finding the truth. Life is not a comparison study.

Self-examination takes practice.

I wasn’t good at it at first, because I didn’t understand the parameters of the training. I looked outward at you instead of inward at me. I judged by the standards of whoever I thought was better than me instead of questioning to discover my own values.

For me, self-examination started when I tried to ascertain what I was feeling. Once I began to label my feelings, I was able to track the

circumstances that brought them about. If I was upset, did my behavior have a part in it? Had I mistreated another person or sold myself short? If I was angry, did the feeling stem from the possibility of losing something I thought was mine or not getting a fair share of what I wanted?

Was I angry or afraid? I had to learn that there was a difference.

Once I learned that emotions were often the result of my own fears, expectations, or bad actions, I learned that they didn’t have to command an entire day. I could look to the standard by which I wanted to live and aim my response to bring that closer. I learned that building character wasn’t always comfortable, but it brought about less emotional distress down the road. My actions began to change because the way I thought was undergoing change. I was figuring out what it meant to be true to myself.

If you are on this journey of self-discovery, I wish you well. With practice and willingness, the road will smooth out and the assistance will show up.

In the meantime, be gentle with yourself. The best is yet to come.

Happy Daddy’s Day In the Bible, Romans 8:15 states: “You have not received the spirit if bondage again to fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”

“Abba” means “Daddy.”

Pastor Rich Ienuso Because of Jesus we have been adopted in God’s family. Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection have made a way for those who will receive His mercy and forgiveness by faith to be adopted into the family of God. We have the privilege and honor to call God our Daddy.

As many who have received Jesus by faith into their hearts have the right to be called children of God (John 1:12).

Accept Jesus now and call God “Abba.”

The Role of a Father

Ephesians 6:4 (NKJV) “4And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.”

F

athers play such a vital role in their homes and society. As I am writing this today, I know not everyone has always had a good father, and I know that some people might not even have had a father at all.

Maybe you are reading this today and have not been a good father yourself. The point of this article is not to make you feel bad, but to try to help steer you to recognize just how important the role of a father is. You can always start doing things differently starting today.

A good father will always demonstrate love, leadership, and protection to his family. His role includes making decisions, setting goals, providing direction for the family, and taking responsibility for the physical needs of the whole house, by leading and providing for his family.

A good father teaches his children about faith, morality, and values by setting an example of living out his faith. He will instill in his children the importance of having a personal relationship with God. He mentors them in navigating life’s challenges with faith and the power of prayer.

A father’s presence and involvement in his children’s lives will always create a safe space for them. A present father provides a sense of security for his family. His children feel valued and confident and learn to handle life’s difficulties with boldness and courage.

Above all else, a father should demonstrate love to his children in word and deed.

As we are being celebrated as dads this month, let’s lead our families with love, integrity, and kindness, leaving a legacy to the generations to come that will have eternal value.

A present father provides a sense of security for his family.
