TREVOR JAMES Hi, Trevor James, how are you? I’m doing well. Trevor is calling in from New York City, Broadway. He’s going to be leaving Broadway to come to Vero Beach, Florida, to play the lead role in Jersey Boys at Riverside Theatre. Are you excited? Oh, I’m so excited. I’ve actually never been to Florida, if you can believe it. 6

We’ve got to spoil you. Please. We’ll take you to the famous Ocean Grill. Anyway, the Jersey Boys was a phenomenal hit on Broadway and a phenomenal hit movie directed by Clint Eastwood. You can’t go to this show and not come out with a smile on your face. And it’s all based on a true story, right? Yes, sir. I think that’s what surprises people about the show. You come in expecting all the great music of the Four Seasons, and you get all that, plus so much more. They came from a pretty seedy rough-and-tumble blue-collar world, and that’s who they were writing music for. Coming out of that old neighborhood in Jersey is a feat of its own.

nd I don’t know how far and wide they had to look to find you, but you must have a rare talent. I saw the show on Broadway, also the movie, and there are amazing high notes. I’ve actually been immersed in the world of the Four Seasons and Frankie Valli music even more so than I ever thought. This will be my third time doing this show. I remember the first time I did it showing up and just being shocked at how much of the music I actually already knew because it had been on in the background in the house or in the car. And they wrote so many songs you don’t even remember that you know. It’s phenomenal. “Rag Doll,” “Sherry,” of course, “Walk Like a Man.” There’s a section in the show called the Big Three where we do “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Walk Like a Man” in a row. At that point of the show, the audience goes crazy.

I was just thinking, what are the chances of Frankie Valli, a guy with a voice like that, and writer Bob Gaudio coming together? It’s like an act of God, I swear. Yes, exactly. It’s like two artistic souls just destined to meet each other.
Now, when did you come to the knowledge that you had that ability to sing so high? You know, that’s so funny. When the show came out in the early 2000s, it was immediately on my radar. Aside from vocals, type-wise, the character of Frankie Valli, as told in the show, is very much in line with my acting sensibilities and performance sensibilities. We even have a similar height, just an overall similar type. But you obviously need to have that voice as well. I think it was a very natural progression of just humming some of the songs in my head and over the years kind of noticing, “Oh, okay, that is a skill set that I actually feel like I possess.” It’s all about paying homage to and getting at the heart of the music and bringing yourself to it. Trevor James, where are you from originally and when did you first get the acting bug? I’m from Los Angeles originally. So you wanted to be in movies? You know, in elementary school I couldn’t sit still in class. I had a teacher that brought that to my mother’s attention, and then kind of suggested this afterschool program of doing musical theater. I did sports growing up…basketball, baseball, soccer. And my parents approached me and asked if this was something I was interested in, and I said sure. I did Annie when I was seven years old. And the second I stepped on stage and got my first laugh, I was pretty much hooked. I played Rooster in Annie with a bunch of little kids. That was it. You were smitten. Yes. There’s something about being in front of a live audience when you can make them laugh. The whole audience becomes your lover, right? Yes, exactly. Kind of cool to get paid for what you want to do anyway, right? Oh, my gosh, the biggest blessing ever. Continued next page

Are you ever going to try film or TV? Growing up, being in LA, I did a lot of commercials. I had a talent agent as a kid, and I’ve been on a couple of TV shows. I recently was in an independent feature film that’s looking for distribution right now. So tell me, who do you admire? It could be someone dead, it could be someone alive. Name a couple of people you admire and think they’re really great at their craft. Stephen Sondheim. He’s the best, in my opinion, the best American musical theater composer. I’ve gotten to do my fair share of Stephen Sondheim shows. There’s just something about it. It’s so perfectly imperfect, I think is what inspires me about him.

What’s it about? To start, the music. But it really is about these four gentlemen who grew up in the slums of an old neighborhood of Jersey. A lot of people call it the Sopranos, the Musical. It’s actually a lot more intense than you’d think because they were heavily involved in some mob ties. It’s that old Italian passionate, romantic, and heavy kind of story, and the fact that it is all true. I think because of a selflessness to just tell their honest story without trying to force a narrative or trying to protect their own image, it makes for such a moving and fun and inspiring evening for people, along with a music catalog that you just can’t beat. Well, I haven’t heard you sing yet, but I know in order to have gotten this gig, you’ve got to be able to really hit those notes. You look like the good-looking kid next door that makes it good. And that’s what this is: four guys in the neighborhood together, causing some trouble, and on the side they’re doing some singing. 8

o the Jersey Boys was a big hit on Broadway as well as a big hit movie. You were brought up listening to the Four Seasons – and I just love them, too. Their music brings me right back to my childhood and all kinds of good memories. Tell our readers why they should come and see Jersey Boys at the Riverside Theatre. It’s going to be phenomenal. Oh, my gosh, yes.
And it’s crazy the way it happened. Frankie Valli and then Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi were a trio. And at the time trios were starting to become old hat and people were into quads, a full group. And so they were simply looking for a fourth, and the person that brought Bob Gaudio to Frankie Valli and Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi was Joe Pesci. No! The real Joe Pesci, yes! So there’s a Joe Pesci character in the musical as well, who I played the first time I ever did the show. And he is actually kind of responsible for this kismet, this fate of these two guys meeting and writing music that changed a generation. And they’re all just from that old neighborhood together, they came up together. And Joe Pesci ends up being some phenomenal actor. It’s a story that if you didn’t know it was true, you wouldn’t believe it. Well, we’re all excited. This is the third time you’re playing the lead role? Second time lead role, third time doing the show, yes. Jersey Boys at the Riverside Theater, opening January 2nd running through January 28th. So get your tickets now. Even if you don’t like musicals, you will like this. Especially if you don’t like musicals. I hope people come because it will be a fantastic evening.

s I don’t have a favorite book, I think the series that most influenced my taste in reading and writing would be The Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix. A wildly creative fantasy series, the first book Sabriel has excellent world building, a compelling plot and magic system and characters I want to revisit every couple of years. I always find new reasons to cheer for this teen girl thrown into the role of balancing the line between the living and the dead.

For me, I’d have to say World War Z by Max Brooks. It chronicles the outbreak of a zombie virus. Through a series of journalistic interviews, it tells the story of the collapse of humanity, the zombie war, and the eventual reconstruction of society.
Flipped. It’s about two kids, one girl, and one boy. The story switches the POV back and forth, exploring the romantic narrative between the two main characters. It’s a really nice take on a coming of age romance.

I
f you like feel-good, happy-ending love stories like Hallmark that you don’t have to worry about watching with your kids, you may like Love Is in the Air. And if you’re tired of the Christmas theme with the over-done Christmas decorations, but you like a charming story, you may be charmed by Love Is in the Air. And if you’re bored with of the same predictable storylines, with different (but the same) actors, you may enjoy the storyline and actors in Love Is in the Air. This family-friendly film stars award-winning Australian singer, songwriter, and actress Delta Goodrem, as Dana Randall. I’ve watched her on The Voice Australia and never knew she was an actress, and a good one she is. Dana is the skilled pilot of a small airline (Fullerton Airways) started by her late mother and now run by her and her father, Jeff (Roy Billing). Dana keeps her mother’s legacy and love of flying alive as the pilot of their small, old seaplane (Harriet). She does sight-seeing tours and provides for the residents’ local travel needs. Jeff wishes she would concentrate on the more lucrative flights, but like her mum, her deepest love is helping with emergencies and providing nearby islands with mail and supplies they would not be able to get otherwise. The airline, funded by ITCM, a financial firm in London, is struggling. The president, Duncan (Hugh Parker) sends his son, William (Joshua Sasse), to check the airline’s financials, but Dana and Jeff do not know it’s because William has suggested to his father that they shut Fullerton Airways down, as it’s not a good investment for the company. This is William’s chance to prove to his demeaning, perfectionist father that he is competent to be promoted in the company. His father’s words before he left: “This is important. Don’t disappoint me.” William arrives in Queensland and (fearfully) begins flying around with Dana as she tends to the community. They begin to bond, and the awkward pretty boy from London falls in love with the small-town able pilot, and the place. Before long, William sees the merit of what the airline does, and he begins to avoid his father’s calls, knowing he will be enraged. Eventually, though, he must confront him.

After all, “Time is of the essence.” The film has its share of suspense with the plane breaking down, a cyclone, the conflict between William and his father, and of course, the relationship between Dana and William. When Dana hears that William is actually there to shut Fullerton Airways down, she shuts him down. It isn’t the only cyclone happening that day. At first, I didn’t think the relationship between Dana and William was believable. I didn’t see them as a good match because they came from such different worlds, and she seemed much more capable than he. Add in the contrast between her loving her family’s business and him hating his. But as the film went on I saw that William’s gifts hadn’t been tapped into, as he tried to fit into his father’s mold. He discovers his true self when he breaks out of his father’s mold factory. an William convince his rigid father that the airline and the people are worth their time and money? Will he convince Dana his intentions changed when he met her? Will Dana ever trust him? This romcom is sprinkled with just the right amount of suspense and humor. You will love the scenery of the Far North Queensland coast where it was filmed in Australia, as well as the scenes flying over the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsundays Islands. Delta is just plain likable, which made her character likable. I thought it was a fun, Hallmark-like movie, but with different actors and a new story. Love Is in the Air is not rated—because it doesn’t need a rating. It’s refreshing and completely okay to watch with anyone. But beware—it will leave you wanting to book your flight to Queensland!

What do you hope to accomplish in 2024?
I set many goals for 2024! I plan on purchasing a camel that will be a great addition to the farm and be great to have for our live nativity scene next Christmas. Looking forward to purchasing a John Deere Gator or Kubota RTV. Plans are in the works for refurbishing our bird aviary and building our veteran’s dock.

The worst purchase I made was purchasing drugs - it almost ruined my life. But the best purchase was the blood of Jesus Christ because it got me to where I am today.
We had a car one time that was a lemon and the owner at the Nissan dealer helped us fill out the paperwork so we can get our money back and we were able to get a new car. He was so gracious. I guess that could count as my worst and best purchase. My daughter even bought a car from them after that.
One of the worst purchases I made was my wife’s 19thanniversary necklace. I accidentally got her the same necklace I bought six months prior to our anniversary. I guess I really liked the necklace! The best purchase was probably when I bought my daughter the piano – it gives me great joy listening to her play. She’s so good at it now she’s giving me lessons!

The best purchase would be my home. We got a deal at the bottom of the recession. The house we found had a pool and within 12 months equity went up $50,000. The worst purchase I’ve ever made was my 1983 Ford Escort which ended up being a total lemon.
The best purchase right now is my kitchen mixer. It sits just perfectly on my countertop, making things very easy for me. I can make pizza dough, bread dough – whatever! The worst purchase I would have to say are my shoes. Every time I buy a new pair they don’t fit.

And like most great works of art, whether it’s paintings, books, or performance art, the imagination is drawn to the edge of what we know is possible and what’s created in the wildness of sacred space.

It reveals our vulnerabilities, and the wind to me represents God’s awesomeness. I always find myself holding my breath when looking at paintings like this and always secretly saying to myself, “I know they survived. It’s a wild ride, just hang on.”
