The Monticello Graveyard had its beginnings in an agreement between Jefferson and school mate Dabney Carr who later married Jefferson's sister.

They agreed they would be buried under a great oak tree which stood here. Carr was the first grave on this site.

hile driving home last summer from our vacation in Maine, we stopped at several historical spots along our journey south. One of our favorites was exploring Monticello, the beloved home and plantation of our third president, Thomas Jefferson. We were there for a day and had time to take the house tour as well as a Gardens & Grounds tour already under way.

As a young man, Jefferson inherited property surrounding his boyhood home in Virginia and chose a scenic mountaintop he knew from childhood as the site to build his home. He was a visionary of architecture and, from knowledge gained from voracious reading, designed the stately brick mansion and elaborate gardens. At the ripe old age of 26 he began the enormous undertaking of building Monticello, a project which would take most of his life.

We started our visit with the house tour. Even on this cool misty day, the crowds were plentiful. Our guide was a seasoned history buff with a wealth of information on both Monticello and Jefferson.

This storyteller told us many interesting colorful stories throughout the tour.

When you step through the doors of Monticello, you are transported back in time. Jefferson filled his home with art, fine furnishings and mementoes of his travels. He had a brilliant mind and conceived many inventions: an ingenious copying machine called a

polygraph; a rotating bookstand that holds five books at once – one of his favorites; a spherical sundial, farm tools and dozens of other gadgets, many of which are on display.

His creations were quite outrageous for his day, and it seems Jefferson “had a thing” about time. He designed the great clock inside the entry hall. The clock is connected to another clock face that hangs over the exterior entry door, which in turn is connected to a weathervane on the roof so he could see wind direction from his front doorstep. The dozen cannonball weights keeping the clock ticking weigh 18 pounds each and extend down to the cellar. Talk about ingenious! He also had an obelisk clock at the foot of his bed to allow him to start his day when it caught the sunlight. In 1811 he ordered a Thomas Voight clock that was accurate enough to time an eclipse from which he set his stopwatch and the other clocks in his home. He was the Steve Jobs of his generation.

Each room provides a glimpse of the interests of this extraordinary man. Jefferson loved books and had the largest personal collection in the United States. When the Library of Congress’s books were destroyed by the British during the War of 1812, Jefferson sold his library of 6,487 books to Congress for $23,950, quite a sum of money in those days.

nd then there are his abundant gardens. An avid scientist and horticulturalist, he experimented with hundreds of varieties of fruits and vegetables, using techniques revolutionary for his time. It’s said he viewed meat as merely a side dish to his vegetables, and English peas were his favorites. He loved European wines and attempted two vineyards. Although they failed to thrive, he had a reputation as America’s first distinguished viticulturist – a specialist in the science, production, and study of grapes.

He painstakingly monitored and kept meticulous records of everything that happened at his 5,000-acre plantation – daily weather reports, insects and diseases affecting crops and flowers, and notes about his slaves and animals.

As you stand at the top of the long terraced gardens and walk along Mulberry Row, you can’t help but try to visualize the slaves who worked so hard to bring Jefferson’s ideas to fruition. Mulberry Row is the long walkway between the gardens and the house that served as the industrial work center for the plantation. At one time there were workshops, storehouses and dwellings, though few original structures remain.

For someone who so heartily proclaimed all men were created equal, over the course of his lifetime he owned 600 slaves and only freed seven. How ironic that his library shelves were filled with books on Enlightenment that were dusted by slaves. To his credit, he promoted alternatives to harsh physical punishment to encour-

age hard work, such as offering tips or percentages of workshop profits. During his long absences from Virginia, however, the overseers didn’t share this vision.

Jefferson was a devoted family man. He and wife Martha Wayles Jefferson had six children though only two daughters survived to adulthood. He wholeheartedly enjoyed the company of his twelve grandchildren who lived with him, organizing races on the lawn and teaching them how to play chess. He was devastated when she died at age 33 from complications of childbirth and he never remarried.

Interesting note: It’s believed that wife Martha Jefferson and slave Sally Hemings were half sisters, having the same father.

Sally Hemings had six children believed to be fathered by Thomas Jefferson, many years after the death of Martha. Though Sally was never officially freed by Jefferson, his daughter Martha gave her unofficial freedom which enabled her to remain in Virginia, as freed slaves were required by law to leave the state within a year.

Thomas Jefferson died at Monticello at age 83 on July 4, 1826 – the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson’s long-time friend, a fellow signer of the Declaration of Independence, and former rival John Adams died the same day. Coincidence?

Beachside Saturday Morning Farmers Market – Across from Humiston Park and open every Saturday from 8-noon. Enjoy delicious food, watch chef demonstrations, learn about organic farming and buy all the produce, breads, pastries and more you can carry. They even have homemade dog biscuits! Nice selection of orchids, air plants, and other tropicals to choose from. And they usually have live music you can listen to as you make your way through the market.

Afterwards, take a stroll along Cardinal and Ocean Drives and check out the many wonderful unique shops and restaurants. Have lunch overlooking the ocean. Or, cross the street with the kids to the park.

Humiston Park – Great fun for the kids. Beachfront park with a boardwalk, benches, picnic and grilling areas, and playground equipment.

Afterwards, take the kids a short walk down Ocean Drive for an ice cream.

Riverside Park – Recreational activities abound in this public park just off the Barber Bridge. There’s a two-mile round-trip fitness trail through gorgeous oak canopies; lit tennis courts; boat ramps; picnic tables; and a red-roofed gazebo right on the river’s edge – just a few of the activities you can enjoy here. Kayak companies and stand-up paddle board rentals often start out from here if you want to get out on the water.

Veteran’s Memorial Island – Take a short walk across the bridge from Riverside Park and enjoy the tranquility of this beautiful island sanctuary dedicated to the veterans of our Armed Forces. Various ceremonies are held here throughout the year. View the memorials to our local fallen heroes. Sit on a bench and reflect on the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom, count your blessings, and drink in the quiet peace. Beautiful spot to catch the sunset and watch the dolphins.

Conn Beach Boardwalk – Want to walk the beach without getting your feet in the sand? Head here and get your exercise in! The boardwalk is a mile long if you go from one end to the other and back. The beach view is spectacular and is a popular spot to watch the moon-rise and rocket launches.

Jaycee Beach Park – Lifeguards are on duty daily at the beach. There’s playground equipment for the kids and a volleyball court in the park area.

Spread a blanket on the grass and have a picnic lunch, or head for the picnic tables and grill up some hotdogs, or enjoy the shade under the pavilions.

If you want a little lessactive water encounter, climb aboard the River Explorer Boat behind the Riverside Café for a one- or two-hour private cruise. Enjoy the beautiful Indian River Lagoon on a comfortable pontoon boat as you motor through the heart of the lagoon, home to more than 4,300 species of plants, waterfowl and animals, including dolphins and manatees. See beautiful homes of Vero from the water; cruise through waterways that feel like you’re in the Amazon rather than a few miles from the Barber Bridge. See how unique and precious the Indian River Lagoon is to our community.

Hop in the car and head south on A1A …

Round Island State Park, Riverside Do you like to canoe, kayak or paddleboard? Go boating? Located at 2200 Highway A1A near the county line, this park is a known manatee hangout and kayaker’s paradise. Look online for kayak rentals and tours if you don’t have your own. With two small boat ramps, it’s also a popular spot for boaters to head out onto the river for a day of fishing and to enjoy all the beauty the area has to offer.

Stroll the boardwalk, wander the trails, and climb the observation tower. The bridge over the lagoon is a great viewing area for the manatees that congregate here during the cooler weather and you’re sure to see them. And spotting dolphins swim by is always an exciting bonus. This park is part of the Florida Birding Trail and teems with waterbirds. Bring your binoculars and see how many different species you can spot. (And you might want to pack your bug spray.)

There’s a playground for the kids and picnic tables, clean restrooms.

If you do get out onto the water, either with a paddle or a motor, remember not to touch the manatees. Just enjoy their lumbering beauty.

I

f you’re a lover of Colonial American History, Boston is one of the best places in our country to visit.

Even if you’re not, Boston is one of the most cultured cities in the USA and has become more cosmopolitan over the past decades, yet still retains the charm it has always had. While easily accessible from Vero with non-stops from West Palm Beach and Orlando, I prefer not to bother with the hassle of big airports and fly from Melbourne with only one stop on Delta or American in the same time.

Getting around Boston is easy with their public transport system, the “T” as it is affectionately called. The trains and trolleys will get you anywhere you wish and the map is simple to understand. Boston is also a very walkable city.

On a nice day, I always recommend walking the Freedom Trail, www.thefreedomtrail.org, guiding pedestrians to 16 of the nation’s historic monuments by following red bricks in the pavement. Their guides portray real-life colorful historical residents of Boston and all wear period clothing.

They are extremely knowledgeable and entertaining.

Some of the highlights of the tour: The Granary Burial Ground. Sounds a little morbid, but cemeteries are fascinating places to wander through, and this cemetery is the most famous one in Boston, dating back to 1660. It’s named for the bushel grain storage building next door (now a church) and was once part of the Boston Common, the central park of downtown Boston. Usage of the Boston Common changed over the years, once used for pubic hangings, including 4 women in the mid-1650’s for witchcraft, and was a grazing area for livestock, which handled the landscaping at the burial ground. ome of the famous people buried at the cemetery are: John Hancock, Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, Peter Faneuil, members of Benjamin Franklin’s family (Benjamin is buried in Philadelphia), and Mary Goose, thought by some to be Mother Goose.

Paul Revere’s House. Dates to 1680, downtown Boston’s oldest building still in existence. This is where he lived when he set out on his famous ride to Lexington.

Parker House Hotel. Known for the original Parker House Rolls, Boston Cream Pie, and coining the word scrod - Seaman’s Catch Received On Deck. Some famous past employees are Hô Chí Minh, a pastry chef, and Malcolm X who was a busboy.

Other visits. Faneuil Hall Marketplace with its many shops and restaurants, Old South House, Massachusetts State House, The USS Constitution, The Old North Church, King’s Chapel and Burying Ground, and the Site of the Boston Massacre. Those killed in the Boston Massacre, by the way, are buried in the Granary Burial Ground.

Another fun way to see the city is by Duck Tour, amphibious vehicles that show you the city by land and sea in vehicles modeled after the landing craft on Normandy in WWII. The variety of things to see and do is also matched by the variety of accommodations available. Be coddled by the larger luxury hotels ($$$$) such as the historic Fairmont Copley Plaza or the modern Four Seasons, the mid-range ($$$), or the lovely, easily affordable ($$) Staypineapple in the resurgent and hip South End. My favorite hotel, though, sums up Boston, mixing old and new, located near the famous gold dome of the Massachusetts State House…the XV Beacon Hotel ($$$$) located in the elegant Beacon Hill District which lights its cobblestone streets with gas lamps. The hotel has a fabulous restaurant, Mooo… (you can guess what’s on the menu!) if you want to take a break from all the wonderful seafood which abounds. All of these hotels are easily walkable to the Public Garden and Boston Common, two delightful parks in the center of town.

House, to a new favorite of mine: Mooncusser Fish House. One hidden gem that’s been around for decades is the family-run No Name Restaurant on Boston’s Fish Pier for delicious seafood in a casual atmosphere. After a nice lunch at No Name, you can walk to the historic Boston Tea Party Museum and throw some tea into Massachusetts Bay. One of the most cultured cities in the USA for theater and music lovers, head to Symphony Hall for the Boston Pops or The Boston Symphony, or to one of the many fine theaters located on Tremont Street. For art lovers, the Museum of Fine Arts rivals all others in the world, as well as my favorite, the eclectic Isabelle Stuart Gardener Museum where the still-unsolved largest single art heist took place. Finally, if you find a gap in your schedule, stroll down Newbury Street and pop in and out of the shops, galleries and restaurants in Boston’s delightful Back Bay neighborhood.

Redeeming Love

R

edeeming Love entered theaters in January 2022 and stayed in the box office top ten for four weeks.

This movie is based on the 1991 best-selling novel Redeeming Love

by Francine Rivers, which sold over three million copies worldwide.

Rivers also wrote the screenplay.

The story was inspired by the biblical book of Hosea, which is an allegory demonstrating God’s redeeming love.

But this is not a typical Christian movie.

Angel (Abigail Cowen) is a prostitute with a tragic childhood. Born out of wedlock, her father leaves and her mother turns to prostitution to support them. When her mother dies, eight-year-old Angel (played by Livi Birch) is sold into prostitution. Michael Hosea (Tom Lewis), a handsome, devout, hardworking farmer, believes God told him to marry Angel. He repeatedly pays for visits with her in the brothel only to talk and convince her to marry him. Cynicism causes her to shrug him off as just another of many such invitations. However, after being beaten by the Duchess’ bodyguard, she agrees to marry Michael and allow him to take her away from “Pair-a-Dice” to his farm. But demons don’t flee that easily.

Angel is a shattered girl who has become cold and heartless to ignore her pain. No man has ever loved her like Michael, beginning with her own father. And she surely doesn’t think there’s a God who loves her any more than the other men in her life. Besides, she believes she has too many demons to be able to love Michael. She long ago threw love and faith away in the sea of pain overwhelming her.

Feeling unworthy and inadequate, she leaves Michael and returns to the brothel. He rescues her, and she leaves again, and again. But Michael forgives her and doesn’t give up on her. He never stops loving and praying for her, even to the point of finally letting her go. He knows, unless she chooses him, it’s not the real love he’s looking for.

This is

the story Hosea portrays—God’s patient, merciful, redemptive love towards us, even in our unfaithfulness.

Though the story takes place during the 1850’s California Gold Rush, it is a timeless story of love, abuse, human/child trafficking, and restoration. The film is not easy to watch in some places, but it’s real, and may be a source of hope and healing to anyone with a past or who has suffered abuse.

I highly recommend Redeeming Love, and the acting is excellent. But I would not recommend it for a PG-13 audience.

It is raw, edgy and graphic.

In this world that has canceled God and is now full of brokenness and hate, a twisted idea of love, and a divorce rate near 50%, this movie demonstrating the power of pure, unrelenting love is refreshing.

See if for yourself. You’ll be blessed by it.

A

nother movie with the wonderful child actress Livi Birch is Tulsa (2020). Once you dry your eyes from Redeeming Love, give it a view.

Beyond her years, foster child Tulsa finds her veteran, alcoholic father.

Though inspired by true events from Marine Corp veteran Pryer’s life and work as a trial lawyer, it is somewhat unrealistic. However, it addresses many real-life challenges such as foster care, abuse, PTSD, addiction and bullying.

It’s another heartwarming story of redemption, sprinkled with humor, and definitely worth your time.

Summer Salsas!

This is the season for fresh summer vegetables and fruit. Cool salsas are a delicious topping for everything from fish to burgers to tacos, as dips for your favorite chips, and are good enough to eat right out of the bowl!

WATERMELON SALSA

A refreshing change for summer, enjoy with tortilla chips, or spoon over grilled chicken or fish.

INGREDIENTS 3 cups diced seedless watermelon 1 cup diced peeled cucumber 1/4 cup chopped red onion 1/4 cup minced jalapeño pepper, seeds removed 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro 2 tablespoons chopped fresh mint 2 tablespoons honey 1 tablespoon freshly grated lime zest 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt Tortilla chips, for serving INSTRUCTIONS

• In a large bowl, combine the watermelon*, cucumber, red onion, jalapeño pepper, fresh cilantro and fresh mint.

• In a small bowl, whisk together the honey, lime zest, lime juice, and salt.

• Add the dressing to the large bowl and gently toss to coat.

• Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour. The salt will help draw out moisture from the watermelon and cucumber to add just the right amount of liquid.

• Serve immediately.

• Store in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 2 days.

*Note: As you dice the watermelon, it will release liquid. To avoid a soupy salsa, allow the diced watermelon to drain in a colander before adding it to the rest of the ingredients.

3 ripe mangos, diced 1 medium red bell pepper, chopped 2 scallions, chopped 1/4 cup packed fresh cilantro leaves, chopped 1 jalapeño, seeded and diced Juice from 1 large lime Salt, to taste

Strawberry Salsa

AVOCADO

1 medium lime, juiced and zested 1 1/2 teaspoons honey Pinch of salt 1 pint of strawberries, hulled and diced 1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and chopped 1/2 small red onion, chopped 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro Black pepper, to taste

INSTRUCTIONS ARE BASICALLY THE SAME FOR EACH RECIPE: In a serving bowl, combine your ingredients. Drizzle with the dressing ingredients, season with salt and pepper, thoroughly combine. Let the salsa rest 10 – 30 minutes before serving.

Note: For recipes using a jalapeño, use a small one for less kick, or leave some seeds in for more.

Corn Salsa 3 cups raw corn kernels (4 ears) or 2 cans Green Giant Steam Crisp Niblets 1 cup red onion, finely chopped (1/2 medium onion) 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro (1 bunch) 1 to 2 medium jalapeños, seeded and finely chopped Juice from 2 large limes 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar 1/4 teaspoon chili powder 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon salt

Avocado Salsa 3 large ripe avocados (or 4 small/medium), diced 1 pint cherry tomatoes, quartered 1 cup red onion, chopped (1 small onion) 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro 1 to 2 medium jalapeños, seeded and minced 1/4 cup lime juice (1 to 2 limes) 1/2 to 1 teaspoon salt, to taste Note: Gently toss ingredients and don’t over-mix.

Serve immediately. To store, press Saran directly on the salsa to help prevent browning.

Right Relation

Knowing about God is different from knowing God. The first is a concept; the second is a relationship.

When I’m talking with someone who lives with a concept of God, it can be difficult to arrive at a faith that He will provide. They focus on their part, on what they can do, to make a situation play out to their benefit. Though they say they have consulted God, their interaction is more in the nature of getting a bid from a workman. If it isn’t what they hoped for, they move on to Plan B, whereby they make the mountain move by hiring backhoes and excavators.

When challenged, people working with a concept in place of a relationship don’t know what they’re missing. They think faith is an earned reward instead of a free gift. All that is necessary to receive faith is to ask for it.

People with real relationship with God have been asking for faith since they first understood the meaning of His great love for them. Now, living with a track record of faithful hopes fulfilled, their faith has matured to trust. While faith is free, trust is not. Trust comes only to the fully invested. Trusting God costs a person everything.

In any functional relationship, there are certain benchmarks that must be met. Quality relationships exhibit fidelity, effective communication skills, support, allocating quality time, and sharing interests. Imagine allowing that description to define one’s connection with God. With heartfelt desire and regular commitment, it is possible. But it must be the number one goal of the seeker.

You don’t have to be holy to hang

Like any partnership, quality connection with the Almighty starts with an objective to achieve a shared vision. Then, the decision to live in alignment with spiritual principles that will nurture intimacy will begin to push out old ideas. This happens naturally. It is not contrived.

Next, the seeker must start conversing with God, however awkward it may feel at first. Prayer is talking; meditation is listening. Sometimes the listening is hardest for the novice, but if they persevere, they will come to treasure the quiet times when He shows Himself in the mind’s eye. Stillness in His presence will become revitalizing and transformational. When quiet, God is strong.

As time passes and a person actively chases this relationship, it is natural that he will devote more time to this divine companionship. Oddly enough, the seeker will begin to take actions that will please God. Morals that have shifted return in force.

Conscience regains its voice and speaks loudly in the psyche.

Change is evident as fruit begins to grow in measurable ways.

The alteration will attract outsiders. They will want to know how the changes have occurred.

This work may sound grueling to those just beginning to move from believing that there is a God to having a working relationship with Him. Happily, it isn’t. You don’t have to be holy to hang out with God. Hanging out with God makes you holy . . . wholly.

So, start at the beginning. If you lack belief, ask for it.

Remember, faith is a free gift. If you have belief but still feel separated from an effective collaboration with the Divine, get busy.

Make a resolution to work on your relationship and practice communicating through prayer, meditation, and praise.

God is crazy about you and just waiting for the opportunity to let you know Him more fully.

Captain Jack Jouett?

veryone is familiar with the famous midnight ride of Paul Revere. There is another American Patriot who had a similar ride in 1781 through forty miles of treacherous back woods Virginia that most history books fail to mention: Captain Jack Jouett of the Virginia militia stationed in the Charlottesville area.

Virginia’s government had been scattered out of Richmond by British troops and were meeting in Charlottesville. British General Charles Cornwallis knew this and ordered Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton to Charlottesville to capture Governor Thomas Jefferson and members of the Virginia General Assembly. Tarleton’s Dragoons traveled quickly at night hoping to take them by surprise.

Captain Jouett was sleeping on the lawn of the Cuckoo Tavern when he was awakened by the sound of a large number of horsemen. He recognized the British Dragoons led by Colonel Tarleton himself and was quick to realize their mission: The Virginia Assembly was in session at Charlottesville, some forty miles from the tavern, and Governor Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and many other notorious rebels were there. Jouett recognized the enormity of the situation and knew it was up to him. He saddled his horse and rode hard into the dark Virginia woods. He beat Tarleton’s Dragoons and arrived at Monticello at dawn, waking Jefferson and the assemblymen who were staying there.

Jefferson sent his family off to a neighboring farm for safety. He stayed to gather important papers and then left to join them. In his haste, he dropped his walking sword and returned to Monticello to find it. While there, he observed the British Dragoons. Jefferson later described how he avoided the main road and traveled through the woods to join his family.

How close was his escape? Henry Randall, in his book, The Life of Thomas Jefferson, reported that while Jefferson was on the lawn of Monticello, Captain McLeon of the Dragoons was already in the house.

Captain Jack Jouett’s heroism was acknowledged by the Virginia Assembly who presented him with a brace of silver mounted pistols and a jeweled sword.

Stuart G. Gibbony, President of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation, said of Jack Jouett in 1926: “But for Captain Jack Jouett’s heroic ride, there would have been no Yorktown and the Revolutionists would have been only unsuccessful rebels.” A fitting tribute to a gallant Patriot.
