ome fathers and sons bond by fishing together. Others connect through sports. But Rick Hurley and his seventeen-year-old son, Drew, have built on their relationship with a project that taps into their creativity and mechanical mindsets: HO-scale model trains. For more than a decade, the two have worked side-by-side to create a model train layout in their garage. “It’s like our own little world,” says Drew of the five-and-a-half by an eight-foot structure that includes a train running on tracks through a mountain, a town filled with people, a gas station, a church, and even a river. “We can make the layout whatever we want and be creative,” adds Rick. “There’s no plan except our plan.” It was Drew’s fascination with trains as a preschooler that inspired the project. “I loved watching the train cartoon series Thomas & Friends,” said Drew, who spent hours setting up a series of wooden Thomas train sets. But as he grew older, he wanted more realistic tracks and trains, and the idea of building a father-son HO-scale layout was born. What started with small track and train setups later developed into the current project, which the two began building when Drew was seven years old. “It’s like drawing a picture,” said Rick. “When you first start, it’s blank, but as you get closer to the end, you can see that you’ve realized your vision.” Drew’s vision for the landscape included multiple tracks, a river, lake, and mountain, and through a joint effort, father and son were able to bring his ideas to life. They created the mountain from foam boards, which was a learning experience as they figured out how to work with the foam and cut it to the desired shape. Next, they paint-

Over the years, as they’ve added elements to the layout, they’ve not only built lifetime memories but also a deep respect for the way their talents complement each other. “I truly appreciate my dad and his knowledge and skill in woodworking and engineering,” said Drew. On the other hand, Rick says he marvels at Drew’s mechanical abilities. “I won’t even touch the mechanical and electrical elements,” says Rick. “Whether it’s changing out couplers or the mechanics of the cars, Drew’s really good at that. It’s gone beyond the dad teaching the son. Now the son is teaching the dad.”

or Rick and Drew, the train project also carries forward a legacy that began with Rick’s father, Tom, who was a model train buff throughout his life. The trains in the Hurleys’ current setup include some more than 80 years old that belonged to Rick’s dad as a child. Others were those that Rick and his father used in a train layout they made together. “Our layout is a link between Drew and the grandfather he never knew,” said Rick. “We have about four locomotives and 20 different railcars from my father.” The most special is a locomotive that was Rick’s father’s favorite, which they discovered in an unopened box in their garage. “Drew hooked up the cars to the engine, and as the train ran the first loop, I could see the excitement in his face,” said Rick. To continue the family tradition, Drew hopes to make a model train layout with his own son or daughter one day. “The experience is like nothing else,” says Drew. “It’s permanent, and it’s a great way to strengthen a relationship.”

ick is wistful as he surveys their handiwork and realizes that the project is coming to an end. “I think we’ve maxed out,” says Rick. “Drew will be going off to college in a year, and now we’re just down to the little details.” They might add a playground, he says, or a skier or two on the mountain, or a canoe tipping over in the lake. But even if the work is finished, the solid ties that bind Rick and Drew from the years of collective ingenuity and commitment will never be broken. “This is something that I can look back on and say, ‘I did that with my dad; we created that together,’” says Drew.

Traveling the
Spanish Coast
I
had the opportunity to sail recently along the Spanish Coast with Silversea Cruise Line on the Silver Spirit. Having been to the major cities in Spain many times for both work and pleasure, I hadn’t really thought of traveling the Southern coast, but I am glad this birthplace of Flamenco, Paella and Picasso called. must mention, traveling along the coast on the Silver Spirit was wonderful. This luxury line is tops in five-star service at its best; every cabin is a small suite with a nice size bathroom and butler service to boot! A small ship of only 300 cabins, she was the perfect size to slip into the smaller ports along the coast that huge mainstream cruise ships cannot. Leaving from Lisbon, our first stop was Cadiz. Arriving in late afternoon, we tasted the lovely salt fish at Restaurant Tipicoel Paro before settling in to explore the city on the Atlantic the next day. Strung with great beaches for surfing and a lovely old town, the best part of the visit was for what the city is known for…Flamenco! At La Cava, the dancers, singer and guitarist were some of the best, showing incredible passion in their performance and taking us through stories of love, drama and fun. Unfortunately, we had to
leave at night, and passed through the Straits of Gibraltar at midnight before settling into bed and waking in Malaga. Probably my favorite small city in Southern Spain and settled by the Moors, Malaga is the birthplace of Picasso where you can visit his home, and separately the Picasso Museum which houses his art. A smaller version than the famous Paris museum, it houses a nice collection, but be sure to get your tickets in advance with “skip the line” from a tour operator. a half mile. Strolling through the old town around the gorgeous cathedral there are perfect small cafes for tapas to watch the world go by. I must return to explore more. On to the largest city on the southern coast, Valencia. Worlds away from the Catalan culture in Barcelona, Valencia is pure Spain. Boasting one of the largest concentrations of culture, arts and sciences in Spain, you can visit the old and new. Focusing on the new, there is the City of Arts and Sciences. A complex with a magnificent Opera House, Modern Art Museum and more. The Opera House complex actually houses three distinct theaters for Opera, Music and Modern performances and is reminiscent of the Sydney Opera House. A visit to the old takes you through the area with the Cathedral, where there are still Opera House Valencia

We made sure to stop at Horchateria de Santa Catalina to experience the local non-alcoholic refreshing drink Horchata before heading back to the ship for our final stop which is all coastline and mountains before ending in Barcelona, and that is Mallorca. We decided to skip Palma, the capital of Mallorca to explore a fourteenth-century hilltop village about forty minutes’ drive which was where Chopin composed many of his famous works, Valldemossa. Not only are the cobblestone streets charming with shops and cafés along the way to eat the Coca de Patata pastry, but the Monastery where Chopin lived with his partner is not the only famous estate. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have an estate here as well where they live part-time. Following the visit to Valldemossa and on the way back to the ship, we made a final stop at La Granja de Esporles. What was a seventeenth-century family estate is now a wonderful museum showcasing life in the mountains of Mallorca. It is worth a visit, with a small restaurant, shop and a museum which is still a working farm; a place where traditional sausage is made and a glimpse into the wealthy life of the past. We disembarked in Barcelona, and I will cover that wonderful city in another article. One of the benefits and detriments to cruise travel is you only get a taste of a port before moving on. But I learned from this glimpse of the villages and cities of Southern Spain that they deserve a trip back to stay and explore.

GRILLED BRATS & BEER INGREDIENTS 4 sweet onions, sliced into 1/2-inch rounds 3 tablespoons vegetable oil Pepper 2 (12-ounce) light-bodied beers * 2/3 cup Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon caraway seeds 10 brats (Johnsonville Original) 10 6-inch sub rolls, or brioche brat rolls
It’s summer and outdoor grills are firing up. Every guy I know loves brats, and most love beer. Add grilled onions – yum! This recipe is a little fussier than most but the flavors are more intense from grilling the onions and worth the effort.

INSTRUCTIONS • Prep: Turn grill burners to medium-high heat and cover for 15 minutes. Scrape and generously oil cooking grates. Brush onion slices with oil and season with pepper. Combine beer, mustard, sugar, caraway, and 1 teaspoon pepper in a 9x13-inch disposable foil pan. • Grilling: Place pan on one side of grill, and grill the onions on other side of grill until lightly charred, 6 to 10 minutes. Transfer onions to the pan, and grill the brats until browned, 6 to 10 minutes. Transfer brats to pan, cover grill, and simmer until cooked through, about 15 minutes. • Remove cooked brats from pan and grill again until lightly charred, about 4 minutes. Transfer to a platter and tent with foil. • Continue to simmer the beer mixture, with grill covered, until onions are tender and sauce is slightly thickened, about 5 minutes more. Carefully remove hot pan from grill. * • Grill your rolls if desired, one minute per side. • Place brats in rolls and spoon on sauce and onions. Enjoy! * Budweiser. Save your good beer for drinking! * It’s helpful to have a baking sheet handy you can slide the pan on to.
BAKED BEANS Seasoned with cinnamon and allspice, a tasty alternative to traditional baked beans. SERVES 12 INGREDIENTS 2 28-ounce cans baked beans (I use Bush’s Original) 1 1/2 cups ketchup 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon allspice 1 1/2 cups onions, chopped 2 cups corn flakes 1/2 pound bacon INSTRUCTIONS • Preheat oven to 350. • Combine the first six ingredients and pour into a baking dish. • Top with corn flakes and raw bacon strips. • Bake 1/2 hour.
CREAMY COCONUT-LIME POPSICLES If you like coconut, you’ll love this refreshing summer treat. You’ll need a popsicle mold. INGREDIENTS 1 13.5-ounce can full-fat unsweetened coconut milk 1 cup cream of coconut (Coco Lopez) 1 tablespoon finely grated lime zest INSTRUCTIONS • Whisk all ingredients in a medium bowl until well combined. • Divide mixture among your molds, leaving 1/2” space at the top. Freeze about 30 minutes, until slushy. • Carefully stir to evenly distribute the zest. • Cover molds, insert sticks, and freeze until solid, at least 2 hours.

I
didn’t want you to know how it affected me. Maybe I felt silly to be hurt by your comment. After all, you didn’t even flinch when you said it. Your delivery made me believe it was the way everyone sees it. If that’s the case, who am I to react with tears? So, I stuffed it. I pushed it down deep and took the hit. I might have looked down for a second, but that was all. Later that day, I yelled at the dog. I told him to shut up. He was whining because he had been stuck indoors for too long and needed a bathroom run. He took the hit, too. He went and sat by the door and waited for me to respond to his needs. I was so busy reacting that I couldn’t respond to a small animal who loves me dearly. Reacting means to act again. Responding means to answer again. One takes no thought. One requires consideration. With which would you like to be treated? If you’re like me and you occasionally stuff your feelings, you’ll notice that you blow up from time to time, usually on those who mean the most to you. The dog loves me unconditionally and is worthy of my care and consideration. I couldn’t provide it because earlier that day I had stuffed some bad feelings instead of telling someone that his words caused me to feel pain. In some strange way, by not responding, I thought I had
control of the situation. Clearly, that wasn’t the case because later that day, I lost control. When I stumble like this, usually I am spurred on by insecurity. When I am unsure or thrown off guard, I fear that I will appear foolish. So, I withhold honest communication and suffer in counterfeit tranquility while inside I feel hurt and broken. Sometimes, that brokenness will manifest later as anger, though the initial perpetrator will never see it. What if I changed the rules? What if I used that moment of stunned silence to say a prayer? I could ask God to help me be true to who I am, bad feelings and all. I could ask Him to hold me close so that I can share my pain honestly, even if it means losing the illusion of control and poise. In my innermost heart, I know that I need not fear, for God is but a whisper away. When I feel slighted, He will remind me that I am His delight. Then, I could ask Him to grant me the courage to speak my truth, even if my voice shakes. Honest communication is the basis of good relations, after all. To remain silent by stuffing my anguish is to injure the liaison even more. Being true to self means living with dignity and honor. We all merit that, and so do our dogs. relationship with a father is a very special thing. Fathers don’t realize the effect they have on their children. Children that grow up with fathers seem to struggle less with some of the most difficult challenges that life presents. This is especially true through the process of growing up. Identity is one of the ways a father seems to really influence their children. Not only on the positive side, but also on the negative. When Jesus came to earth, He made a special effort to reveal the Father to us. We get to see the part of God that is a father. A heavenly Father that loves us so much. When He taught His disciples to pray, He said that they should pray like this: Luke 11:2 (NKJV)
So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven…” 2
The most amazing thing is that no matter what your past was like or how you grew up, when you give your life to Jesus, the Bible tells us that we are adopted and now we are part of His family.

To say “Happy Father’s Day” is great, but even more heart-felt is “Happy Daddy’s Day.” To be a daddy is special! Ever since the Middle Ages in Europe, Father’s Day has been a time for people to celebrate the contributions of fathers to families and society. In 1972 Father’s Day was made a National Holiday in the United States. It’s a lovely tradition and a great excuse to tell your daddy how much you care and love him.

This means that we are now children of God, and as children we can see how God affirms Jesus His Son, and know that He does this for us as well. 22
God is a Father that loves us as His children like no other father possibly could. We need to be secure in who God says we are. The Story of the Prodigal Son shows us a glimpse of the heart of God towards His children, even when we stray away and make mistakes. If we turn back to Him and admit we have messed up, He is good and faithful and will forgive and receive us. There is no Father like God.
