am very excited to share the news that beginning April 14th I return to terrestrial radio! WCNO Radio, 89.9FM, “the good news station,” out of Palm City has invited me to be on weekdays at 7AM and 3PM. WCNO broadcasts at 100,000 watts of power – which means coverage on the East Coast from Melbourne down to Fort Lauderdale! Only the Lord could shut the door on 27 years of broadcasting on a 1,000-watt station and deliver me to a 100,000-watt station reaching untold potential listeners and new fans! I will continue to interview the famous and celebrated folks I always have and will also continue to stream as usual on our Vero’s Voice app 24/7. That will not change. I will now be more free to bring up the biblical truths that have directed my life over the years on this new station. The only letters of complaint I’ve received over my years on air have been the offense people take over my using the name of Jesus over the air waves. (Oh, wait, I had a letter saying I shouldn’t interrupt my guests so much – point taken – and then another saying I SHOULD interrupt my guests MORE often and not allow them to go on and on!) e were talking about the other artists who came after the original nine, if you felt they deserved to be in the Hall of Fame and you said yes, they did. Yes. And those others that came under us, like my brother-inlaw Isaac Knight, he was working at Grumman in Stuart, but when he come home in the afternoon, me and him would paint under his garage. And the other guys, some of them came in on it after we went into the Artist Hall of Fame, and they start to paint regular, but I don’t have nothing to say about that. There’s enough money out here for everybody. We just gotta be slick enough to get it. Now, do you believe in Jesus? Yeah, I believe in Jesus. As a matter of fact, I’m a licensed minister. You are? Yeah. So have you had any sort of a miraculous encounter with the Lord? Well, matter of fact, I was on drugs when I went to prison, and I know it’s God because I asked him into my life. Yeah, he won’t force himself in on you, but if you ask him into your life, he will come in and he’ll dwell. So I ask him, I said, “Coast Guard Master Jesus,” I said, “I’m out here drowning, on this drug.” I said, “Please, come into my life and move this from me.” And so I was sitting in the cell, on the rocks so bad I didn’t know what to do. But a light shine in there on me. And I said, “Jesus, if that’s you,” I said, “make this light a little bit brighter.” And it look like that light just lit up that whole room.

Was it a cell in the jail? No, I wasn’t in a cell. They gave me a trailer when I was in prison. And I was sitting there in the trailer and the light shined through there and it just brought joy to me that moment. And I ain’t wanted a rock since. I ain’t wanted no drug since.

And what do you mean you haven’t wanted a rock since? What’s that mean? A rock is a drug. They call it crack cocaine. And you can have back trouble, neck trouble, foot trouble, all kind of trouble, but you ain’t had no trouble till you had some crack cocaine trouble.

nd you promise me that this really happened? This happened. I believe. This happened for real, and I’ve been clean for 20-something years. Three years from now, I’ll be 30 years.

So you’re still selling your paintings, you’re still painting every day? Oh, yeah. Everything I paint sells. What is your favorite thing to paint? Well, I like the backwoods marsh scenes, the Florida marsh. What do you like about them? They’ll sell when nothing else sell because people know where that’s at, you know, ‘cause they surrounded by their countrysides and stuff. I also do poinciana trees, jacaranda trees, ocean scenes. The poinciana became very popular. Well, that’s what made the Highwaymen famous was the royal poinciana. Why do you think? It was red and it was vivid, those colors. So is there anything you would like people to know about Al Black, the Highwaymen painter? Well, I was one of the original Highwaymen, I was a salesman for that, and I’m also in the Artists Hall of Fame. It’s not but a couple of us living out of the nine, out of the original nine, and that’s me and Roy McLendon is the only ones living.

Happiness is a choice. You choose to be happy, or you can choose not to be. When you stop to think about how you’ve only got so many days on this spinning blue rock we call Earth, why would you choose anything else? Find happiness in the little things. ne of the most wonderful times of the year to visit our nation’s capital - Washington DC - is in the Spring. I first visited when I was a young boy on one of my family’s numerous road trips, then field trips during school, then lived there and have been going back my entire life. While the area where most visitors spend is relatively small (meaning you can easily get around), it is filled with distinct neighborhoods, each with its own character. This month I’ll highlight my favorite areas to give you the best taste of the city, but I shouldn’t fail to mention that the world-famous Cherry Blossom Festival is happening throughout the month. If seeing the blossoms is top on your list (DC is magical when they are in bloom), you’ll need to go early for their peak time due to a warmer climate. Regardless, the trees continue to bloom and the festival runs throughout the month of April with many events which you can find at nationalcherryblossomfestival.org. World War II Memorial

Blues Alley Georgetown

eorgetown – one of the most beautiful and upscale areas of the city, it is also harder to get to without a Metro stop, but it is worth heading towards. With cobblestone streets featuring beautiful colonial architecture, fantastic shopping and restaurants along M Street and a lovely waterfront along the Potomac, Georgetown is an oasis in a bustling city. Whether you want to stay here as a quiet place to return to after a fun day or just visit for a great day of shopping and dining, it is a neighborhood that is a must see in the city. For mainstream hotels, you’ll have luxury with Ritz-Carlton or Four Seasons, but I like the smaller local hotels The Graham or the super quaint Georgetown House Inn. For a great nightcap, stroll to Blues Alley for some great music and laidback cocktails. The Mall – while not really a neighborhood but an area spanning the tourist area of the city from the US Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, you’ll be spending most of your daytime here but will need to plan your time to make the most out of your visit. The Smithsonian Institution is a collection of many museums and the National Zoo so pick and choose which you wish to visit (maybe only one or two a day), then you can crisscross The Mall to visit the famous memorials, not only the very visible Washington Memorial, but also paying remembrance at the Vietnam Memorial, and what I think was done perfectly, the World War Two Memorial. The great thing is that all the museums are free so you can save your money for shopping and dining! My favorite museums: The National Air & Space Museum and The National Museum of American History. Then, while not a part of the Smithsonian, the following are well worth a visit: US Holocaust Memorial and Museum - a moving museum and one of the best in the world, and The National Archives where you can see the US Constitution. For those who love the Bureau of Printing and Engraving (one of my favorite tours) unfortunately it is closed until further notice due to the pandemic. While reservations are not required for any museums, it is highly recommended since some have capacity restrictions during specific visit times to keep social distancing. Dupont and Logan Circle – close enough to the White House and Lafayette Square for a tourist experience, it is no surprise Embassy Row is located in this neighborhood. These centrally located circles have great nightlife, interesting art galleries, small boutiques, theater and restaurants. Kimpton has many hotels here,

but my favorite is the Dupont Circle Hotel right in the middle of the action. For art lovers, you’ll want to visit the Phillips Collection or visit some beautiful homes/now museums such as Heurich House, Anderson House or Woodrow Wilson’s. Love to dine? Several Michelin star restaurants are here with Sushi Taro at the top of my list, followed by The Pembroke. With so much to do, whether for a weekend or a week, it is obvious you’ll need a game plan, so be sure to do a little research and make the most of your time in this wonderful little city every American should visit at least once in their lifetime!

y grandmother made these not-too-sweet Greek cookies every Easter for my grandfather. Unfortunately she didn’t write down the recipe, so I asked my son’s Greek mother-in-law, Gloria Ward, for hers. Her mother and aunts didn’t have written recipes either so she and her sisters searched and tried recipes and decided on this one, adapted from “Greek Cooking for the Gods” cookbook. The younger generation likes them with cinnamon, while older family members like the anise; she divides the dough so everyone is happy. My grandmother’s were made with ouzo and had sesame seeds sprinkled on top.

Greek Easter Cookies / Koulourakia (ka LU ra ka) MAKES APPROXIMATELY 5 DOZEN INGREDIENTS 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature 2 cups sugar 6 eggs, beaten 1/2 cup milk 7 1/2 cups flour, sifted 4 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoon cinnamon OR 2 teaspoons anise extract Egg Wash (if using sesame seeds): 1 egg, beaten 1/3 cup milk 1/3 cup sesame seeds DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. Cream butter until soft, add sugar and mix thoroughly. Add beaten eggs, then add milk. 3. In a large bowl, whisk together flour and baking powder. Gradually sift into the batter; add the vanilla extract. At this point add either the cinnamon OR anise extract. 4. Turn the dough onto your work surface. (No need to flour.) Knead by hand a few minutes until you have a smooth dough. Test by rolling a small piece in your hand; if it is firm and does not stick, it is the right consistency. 5. Roll the dough in the palms of your hand into “worms” 3 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. The dough is pliable and can be shaped in many ways - complicated braids or a simple ring. (My grandmother’s were twisted. The longer ones make for easier dunking in coffee.) 6. Now is the time to do the egg wash if you want to top with sesame seeds. Combine the egg and milk; brush the cookies and sprinkle with sesame seeds. 7. Place cookies on parchment-lined baking sheets and bake for 15 minutes, until the bottom of the cookies are lightly browned. 8. Allow to cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet before transferring to a wire rack to completely cool. 9. Will keep in airtight container 2 weeks, or you can freeze them.

Hungarian Easter Cheese / Sárga Túró

he koulourakia is a nod to my Greek heritage, and this is recipe is a tribute to my Hungarian side. Both my paternal grandparents emigrated from Hungary in the early 1900’s. Growing up, we celebrated Easter with my mother’s Greek family and I’m sad to say I’m not familiar with traditional Hungarian Easter dishes. I consulted Livia Sorger (owner of Sweet Kiss Gelato) and she said hands down this was the recipe to share. This dish is an important part of the Easter menu, especially in the northeast region of Hungary where Livia’s family is from. It’s similar to a sweet solid milk custard, but the look and texture are more of cooked eggs than cheese. It sounds unusual, but is surprisingly delicious and goes well with the rest of the Easter meal: smoked salty ham, hard boiled eggs, spicy horseradish, crispy Hungarian bread, kalács (braided milk bread), and fresh vegetables. Plus trays of desserts. INGREDIENTS 12 eggs 1 quart milk 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon vanilla extract grated zest from 1 lemon (optional) 1/4 -1/2 cup raisins or sultanas (optional) DIRECTIONS 1. Line a strainer with cheesecloth or clean tea towel and set aside. 2. Combine all ingredients except raisins in a large heatproof bowl and whisk until combined. 3. Place bowl over a pot of simmering water and cook, stirring very frequently, until the eggs curdle, milk whey appears, and it looks similar to scrambled eggs. This will take 20-30 minutes. Stir in raisins or sultanas. 4. Pour the mixture into the cheesecloth and drain for several minutes. Carefully gather the ends of the cheesecloth in your hands and pull them together until the cheese forms into a ball. Squeeze out as much liquid as possible. Use a length of kitchen twine and tie cheesecloth into a neat round bundle, pressing on cheesecloth to help drain the whey. 5. Tie twine to a wooden spoon and hang the egg-cheese ball over a pot or container to collect any remaining whey. Continue draining for several hours. 6. When egg-cheese ball has stopped dripping, place it in the refrigerator overnight still suspended over a pan so it will retain its round shape. Cool completely in the refrigerator. olitics were already heated, and then more chaos was unleashed with word of a pandemic that could mean death to anyone who was medically compromised. News agencies were reporting contradictory accounts. People isolated, and businesses responded with curbside deliveries, outdoor marketing, and limited services. The government sent aid, and service workers hunkered down and quit their jobs. Rents went unpaid, but because of the freeze on evictions, property owners sweated, hoping they could stay afloat until people got back to work and got caught up. Our service economy suffered with labor shortages. Much-needed products like toilet paper became the gold standard, and cargo vessels moored off-shore with products that could not be delivered. The stock market rocked as foreign leaders saw opportunities. In two short years, life as we knew it changed. Fear was calling the shots, and wisdom slipped into the background, shouting through the veil of division. How are you holding up through the confusion? In the end, we are each responsible to our own conscience. Though many of the BIG PICTURE items are beyond our control, there are some

actions we can take to improve the situation, and our mindset. When fear creeps into a heart, we become selfishly obsessed and self-centered. This causes irritability and frustration when personal needs aren’t met. It can advance depressive reasoning, and lead to pessimism and cynicism. We must fetch ourselves up sharply if we fall into this snare, for it leads to a negative and lonely existence. We were not created to exist. We were created to live! Designed for community, when isolation is prescribed as a means of staying healthy, mankind must find new ways of connection or suffer in the break. Gratefully, many have discovered the wonder of Facetime calling and Zoom meetings. Though relationship is not as palpable via technology, it is an attempt to prioritize our bonds with those important to us. Take the plunge and learn how to see and hear your loved ones separated by miles and masks. What have you witnessed in the day-in, dayout dealings with our neighbors? Each of us has experienced the interruption of quality service due to labor and product shortages. We’ve seen

small, independent businesses close due to these issues. We lament the losses. Still, when there is slow-down or, God forbid, a mistake, it is not uncommon to observe mistreatment of the worker who did show up and is trying to provide the required service. How can we help that? We can be the smiling, patient “next-person-in-line” that changes the tone with kindness and compassion. We have the ability to ease the burden of the innocent one that was the recipient of another’s fearful aggression. We can lead with love, not fear or the anger it evokes. hile focusing on the world, many forget that we affect that world by how we live in our own backyard. Today is the day to tell a joke, share a smile, or leave a generous tip to someone who isn’t expecting it. Each one of us must live by our own conscience, and if we’ve been overwhelmed, it is time to ask for help. The fear is only poisonous when it’s kept inside. Share with a trusted friend. Go to church or just kneel beside your bed. Don’t go it alone. We need each other so much. Let’s turn the tide.

Is God Really a God of Love? by Pastor Alex Pappas

have heard so many times how people will say how can God be good or loving if He allows so many people to die in the world. I have heard many people say that God is not loving because of the suffering that the world goes through. All the evil and all the bad things that happen in the world are because there is no God or that God is not loving or good. Also, if He was so good, why would He send people to hell? I would like to tell you a little story today… There once was a school bus driver that lived in the mountains, and he would go every day and collect the children on the one side of the mountain and come back over the mountain to take them to school. The route was a little tricky because the road was narrow, and at some points it was barely more than a one-lane road. Also, there was a straight drop to certain death because of the mountain. One day the driver had a full load of kids, all around 11 years old, and he was driving around the mountain on one of the bends coming down a steep section where was only one lane. He was going pretty fast, when suddenly he saw a child in the road. The child could not have been more than 10 years old. The bus driver got such a shock, and in total desperation had to make a decision. He knew that if he swerved the bus would go off the road and all the kids on the bus would surely die. However, if he would not swerve, he would hit the little 10-year-old child and he would die. The poor bus driver had no choice, and while trying desperately to brake as much as possible, he hit the child and the child was instantly dead. People quickly gathered around, and some looked at the bus driver and accusatorily asked, how he could just hit the child. The bus driver walked up to the little boy lying in the street and picked him up in his arms, and with tears pouring down his cheeks looked up at those accusing him and said to them, “This child is my son….” he truth is, God is just like this bus driver that gave His only son. He did it so that we could be saved from this fallen world, because of sin. Jesus came and died on the cross so that we could be saved from death. God gave the ultimate sacrifice for us. This Easter remember that it is not really about Easter eggs, but about a God that is not just good, but He is great, and He is loving and compassionate and made a way to give us hope, life, and peace.

JOHN 3:16 (AMP) For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.

Jesus

is Alive! Luke 24:1-9: “He is not here, but is risen…” Jesus, the Messiah, was crucified and died, but three days later came back to life. The prophet Isaiah, 700 years before Jesus’ birth, prophesied that the Messiah would die for our sins (Isaiah 53). King David stated that the Messiah would be crucified (Psalm 22) and He would rise again (Psalm 16). Jesus Himself said He would die and rise again (Mark 8:31; Luke 9:22; 12:50; 22:37; John 2:18-22; 3:14). Jesus physically rose from the dead (1 Corinthians 15). We serve a risen Savior. Have you put your faith in Him? Jesus is Lord!
