How big a problem is chronic dry eye?

“We treat chronic dry eye non-stop,” said Dr. William Mallon. “Nearly half our patients suffer to some extent from this condition, and IPL has been amazingly successful even for those who have not shown improvement with other therapies.”

So, what exactly is IPL? “Previous treatments did not treat the root cause of the problem. With IPL, the laser uses different wavelengths to produce heat, which in turn liquefies and releases the oils clogging the meibomian glands in the eyelids resulting in improved eye lubrication and comfort. recent study concluded that IPL produced significant results in nearly 90% of patients. Better yet, you don’t have to wait long for relief. “Patients typically notice considerable improvement after one or two sessions, but we recommend three.”

Recently, none other than the “Mayor of the Air Waves” (aka Rhett Palmer) was treated at the Center with the IPL procedure by Dr. Mallon for a dry eye condition that has plagued him for years…as well as for a few “red-brown spots” on his face. (We are not implying that these are age-related.) As promised, the procedure was remarkably simple… to the “naked eye.”

After applying a cream anesthetic and gel to the areas to be treated, Rhett was zapped with a Joule Laser (described by Mallon as the “RollsRoyce” of lasers) for about fifteen relatively pain-free minutes. (Rhett has a low tolerance for pain, so this speaks well of the procedure.) This was the third of three treatments for Rhett, who these days not only looks less spotted, but a few years younger! And as for his dry eyes, well…they are not dry anymore.

Please note that although IPL is now an FDA-approved treatment for dry eyes, insurance is not yet covering the procedure.

So, who is Dr. William Mallon?
