Letter from the editor... I can’t believe I’m writing this.

From drawing magazines when I was younger, to creating So Yesterday as my final University project, it’s unreal to see this magazine come to life. Welcome to the first ever issue of So Yesterday… a magazine all about growing up in the 2000s! I’m Veronica, creator of So Yesterday, and I’m obsessed with everything 2000s! In my opinion, the 2000s was the best time to grow up in and I wouldn’t change it for the world! In this issue, you can read more about the backstory behind the creation of this magazine on p. 8 and there’s heaps of pages on all your favourite 2000s nostalgia. Think you’re an expert on all things 2000s? Head to p. 66 to take our expert trivia quiz. Want to know what our audience voted to win in our “Best of the 2000s Awards”? Check out p. 32 to see if your favourites won! The aim of So Yesterday is to visually communicate to our audience what the 2000s was about, whether you grew up then or not. I hope that this magazine acts as a metaphorical time machine that transports you back to the 2000s through the collage style designs. I’m so excited to see what the future of So Yesterday will be and I hope that this magazine reignites your memories and is a sentimental link to the past. So, sit down, start reading and let So Yesterday take you back in time as you revisit the past in your own unique experience.

Veronica, creator of So Yesterday, takes a look at her journey in Graphic Design through a timeline of childhood drawings and how her interests and nostalgia led to the creation of this magazine.

N

ostalgia… “reawakens and links old memories to new experiences.” This sums up my idea behind So Yesterday exactly. I have tried to turn old memories from the 2000s generation into a new experience by creating a magazine that is a link to the past. The idea of a magazine is personal to me, as it was only the other day that I realised that I started my Graphic Design studies with a magazine and finished with a magazine… this magazine. Let’s flashback to the past, as I share with you a timeline of my design dream. It all started in January 2009. One day, my 10 yearold creative self started to draw a cover for a magazine based on a book I had read about Miley Cyrus. I was obsessed with Miley (as were most) and was inspired to create something. I started drawing on paper in pencil a magazine with several pages all about Miley. Prior to this, I also loved reading magazines (cough cough… Total Girl). So, with the understanding of a magazine, I created

8

SO YESTERDAY SOYESTERDAY.COM.AU

a contents page, articles and even a poster… all drawn in pencil by a 10 year-old, and it was placed in a pink display folder so I could look at my magazine whenever I wanted to. A couple of months later, I re-visited my pink folder and decided to create a new cover page, which was again all about Miley Cyrus. I remember asking my older sister what the name of the job was where you create magazines. She told me it was a graphic designer (a job I was familiar with) and that there are also magazine editors. From that day onwards, I knew that one day I might combine my love of writing, celebrities and magazine creations, and become a graphic designer for a magazine. Fast forward to December 2010, and I have now created a new 10-page Miley magazine, featuring a colouring-in page, a subscription page, a quiz and even competitions. In 2012, now age 13, I decide to change it up and create a new magazine based off my favourite band, Big Time Rush, and this time, I used colour for the

cover and quiz. In 2016, after getting close to graduating school, I was still unsure as to what I wanted to do. I always had Graphic Design in the back of my head, but wasn’t sure if I wanted to do that as a job. I had some experience with design in Year 10 art, as I chose to create a digital portrait of myself using Photoshop, made up of words that describe me. I also did photography in Year 11, and helped design the promotional banner for our school musical. As I explored courses, I realised I needed to do something creative and thought that I’d enjoy Graphic Design, especially because I had wanted to work at a magazine. So, I enrolled in a Graphic Design degree at University and was due to start in late February 2017, aged 18. However, in early February, I thought it’d be fun to create a new edition to my magazine creations. I decided to use Photoshop (the only program I had knowledge on at the time) and create a magazine cover digitally. I took inspiration from my huge collection of American teen magazines I used to love to collect and read (I still have them!). The day I first bought “BOP” magazine, I read it cover to cover a couple of times! I remember thinking that maybe after I finish my course, I’ll look back at this cover design and see how much I’ve grown as a designer. I also remember on uni orientation day they said some past students had worked at a magazine and I got excited, as that’s what I wanted to do, and knew one day that could be me. Well, fast forward to March 2020, now 21 years-old, and I’m brainstorming ideas for my final major design project. I recently had discovered a love for collage and knew I wanted to incorporate that; however, I was really stuck on ideas. It wasn’t until one day I was at home and was watching my favourite show, “Drake & Josh”, that I thought why can’t my project be about that, as I love that show. It then dawned on me, that maybe I could create something about my favourite TV shows. After some thinking, I realised that all my favourite shows are from the 2000s which is when I grew up, and others love these shows as well, and I love memories. So why not make my project about nostalgia and growing up in the 2000s, which others can relate to and enjoy as well? And then I remembered about my pink display folder that I still had to this day with

all my magazine creations. Maybe I could incorporate those into my project as that would be a unique element to add to a project about nostalgia? Maybe I could make this project a magazine, as I get to fulfill my dream of creating a magazine, others can read & enjoy it and it also relates to the 2000s, as magazines were very popular in those days. Thus, the idea of So Yesterday was born! As I sit and create this magazine, it has occurred to me how special it is to see my drawings from when I was younger to So Yesterday coming together. Who would have thought a simple drawing that I did as a child, my favourite TV show and my love of the 2000s, magazines and celebrities would influence this magazine and my potential career path? I have really enjoyed making this magazine and unlocking forgotten memories from the past. I hope in the future, I can look back at this magazine and reminisce on the time I grew up in. I also hope that readers have enjoyed looking back at the 2000s and found some comfort in their nostalgia. Thank you to the 2000s for being an awesome & memorable time to grow up in and thanks for the pink display folder that I will always treasure!

“I realised that I started my Graphic Design studies with a magazine and finished with a magazine… this magazine”

. . . S T E L B I N T SWEE Want to know more about the best of both worlds of Miley Cyrus and Hannah Montana? So Yesterday has all the juicy true or false facts debunking the 7 things (see what we did there) all about Miley - the queen of the 2000s!

The show “Hannah Montana” was created and written for Miley? FALSE. Many others auditioned for the role and Miley actually got turned away countless times because she was too young. But she kept on persevering and she eventually landed the role, after which they changed her character’s name to Miley Stewart. Miley’s alter ego character was always named “Hannah Montana”? FALSE. Originally the writers called her “Alexis Texas” but soon changed it to

22

SO YESTERDAY SOYESTERDAY.COM.AU

“Hannah Montana”, which sounds way better anyway! Miley’s character also underwent name changes from Chloe to Zoe, to Kylie to Miley! There’s an alternate ending to the Hannah Montana series finale that didn’t make the final cut? TRUE. The scene starts with the text: “Tennessee: Twelve Years Ago” and shows a young girl (portraying young Miley Cyrus) playing with dolls and singing. Miley’s real-life parents walk in and as they tuck her into bed, she states how one day she is going to be a rock star like her dad. Her parents tell

“Destiny Hope Cyrus”, and this name was chosen to symbolise a bright future. But her family used to nickname her “Smiley” when she was younger because she smiled a lot. Eventually Miley came about and the rest is history. She legally changed her name to “Miley Ray Cyrus” in 2008.

her to keep believing and that one day her dream will come true. The scene then fades into a photo of Miley and her real parents in the present day. This ending suggests that it is a flashback to young Miley where she imagines being famous, little did she know the Hannah Montana phenomenon and success she’d be involved in later in her life. Some other fans of the show think that this alternate ending really suggests that young Miley imagined the whole story of Miley Stewart and Hannah

Montana, and it was completely fictional. Whatever the case, it’s up to you to decide… check out the ending on YouTube and see what you think! Each episode name was named after real song titles? TRUE. If you look at the episode names for Hannah Montana, they all reference existing songs. “What I Don’t Like About You”, “You Give Lunch a Bad Name”, “Promma Mia” and “Judge Me Tender” are some, to name a few. Miley’s birth name was “Miley”? FALSE. Miley was actually born

Miley toured with The Cheetah Girls? TRUE. Miley toured with The Cheetah Girls on their “The Party’s Just Begun” Tour between 2006-2007. She performed as Hannah as the opening act for some of their shows. There is going to be a Hannah Montana revival? TRUE OR FALSE? WE DON’T KNOW! But recently, Miley said in an interview on Capital Breakfast with Roman Kemp that one day she’d love to reboot it. She mentioned that we’ll have to wait until it’s the right time for it to come back, but she still has all the costumes in storage and the wig at her house. This month’s throwback is Big Time Rush. So Yesterday takes a look at the band, their top hits, TV show and long-awaited, recent reunion. Big Time Rush was a pop boy band comprised of Kendall Schmidt, James Maslow, Logan Henderson and Carlos Pena Jr, and they starred in their very own Nickelodeon series of the same name, which aired from 2009 to 2013. During this time, they released three albums: “BTR”, “Elevate” and “24/Seven”, and went on multiple tours. In 2014, the band went on hiatus, but recently, they posted a virtual reunion video and an acoustic cover to their beloved hit “Worldwide”, which of course sent their fans (Rushers) into meltdown! Let’s hope they get the band back together!

Top 5 BTR Songs, according to So Yesterday: 1. Worldwide 2. No Idea 3. Count on You (ft. Jordin Sparks) 4. Elevate 5. City is Ours

Fun Facts About BTR: - Kendall only joined BTR two weeks before the pilot aired. - James starred as “Shane’ in the iCarly episode “iSaw Him First”. - Logan’s favourite BTR song is “Nothing Even Matters” - Carlos’ character was originally going to be called “Jessie”.

Most Memorable Episode: “Big Time Breakup” - After Jo (Kendall’s girlfriend) gets an acting role in New Zealand, Kendall must say goodbye to her. The episode finishes with the 4 boys at the airport dressed in white, singing “Worldwide” as Kendall looks at Jo’s plane fly off.

reMEMbering ORIES

My older brother would unplug my control from the PlayStation 2 and put the second screen on computer mode, meaning I was not playing but thought I was. I realised that I wasn’t playing when the car in Mario Kart was moving without me pushing buttons. I then cried and dobbed him into to my mum and he got in trouble.

I used to take my Nintendo DS everywhere with me, including my heavy game collection. I was known for bringing my DS bag with me, and all my cousins and I used to share games and help each other out. We’d occasionally use PictoChat and verse each other in the downloadable software that some games could share to other DS’s. It was so fun!

Kaylah, 26

My little sister decided to glue my favourite CDs with toothpaste together because I was annoying her!

Isabella, 26 I used to use MSN on my Windows XP computer to message all my friends in primary school. I liked playing games with the robots and sending an excessive amount of emoticons. I also played The Sims and had every expansion pack. I also loved playing Spider Solitaire (even though I used to ask for hints every time I played).

Amelia, 21

Another favourite memory of mine is watching Disney Channel and Nickelodeon a lot. They were my favourite channels and every show was iconic. I have so many memories associated with them. One in particular was when I was about 7, I entered a drawing competition on Disney Channel and you had to draw Jake Long from American Dragon. I remember drawing it and sending it in and it’s these memories that I will always remember in my life.

Veronica, 22

SO YESTERDAY SOYESTERDAY.COM.AU

My older sister had an iPod Nano, and it was the coolest thing to me back then. I always used to try to convince her to put songs on it that I liked and let me play the trivia games. I also had a battery-operated mini red MP3 player that had a tiny screen that lit up. I loved listening to music on that. How times have changed!

Chris, 23

I loved watching The Lizzie McGuire Movie. It was (and still is) my dream to travel around Italy, just like Lizzie!

Angie, 19

Loved the Milo ice-cream and JJ’s chips my primary school canteen sold.

Just

Jesse

Jesse McCartney was the teen heart-throb of the 2000s. Girls all over the world screamed his name and learnt the lyrics to all his songs (you still know the lyrics to “Beautiful Soul”, right?) But ever wondered how Jesse rose to pop stardom and what’s he doing now? So Yesterday has all the answers for you.

J

J E S S E

esse performed in musicals as a kid, but it wasn’t until the band, Dream Street, was formed in 1999 which gave Jesse his first taste of fame. Dream Street was a pop boy band that comprised of Jesse and four other band members; Matt, Frankie, Gregory and Chris. Their album was certified Gold and they soon grew in popularity. In fact, they starred in the movie, “The Biggest Fan”, which we love & highly recommend you watch! Following the band’s dismantlement in 2002, Jesse began his solo career. In 2004, he released his debut solo album, “Beautiful Soul”. The album had sold more than 1.5 million copies by mid2006, and with this success came award nominations, chart hits, and a tour. Jesse had also landed guest appearances on Disney’s “The Suite life of Zack & Cody” and “Hannah Montana”, playing himself. We still remember when London freaks out over seeing Jesse, and because of her nervous shaking, drops the water from his glass on the floor. Jesse also appeared in other acting roles, such as voicing Theodore in the “Alvin and the Chipmunks” movie franchise. In the years following, Jesse released more albums, and has continued to release songs and tour. Jesse is now 33 years old and is engaged to Katie Peterson. Recently, Jesse reunited with the members of Dream Street to sing a tribute song to fellow band member Chris, who sadly passed away this year. Jesse was truly an icon of the 2000s and his songs are memorable to this day. He will always be influential on the 2000s. I think it’s only fair that we conclude this article with the words of Jesse, “I don’t want another pretty face. I don’t want just anyone to hold. I don’t want my love to go to waste. I want you and your beautiful soul”.

LUCKY DIP

what happened to... DEAN GEYER Dean Geyer stole our hearts in 2006 when he auditioned for Australian Idol and came third. He became a teen heart-throb and quickly grew to fame after releasing an album. But whatever happened to him after that? After some acting gigs in the years following, he eventually scored a role in Glee and even worked in a show with Jennifer Lopez. He also had a relationship with Lisa Origliasso from “The Veronica’s”, but when that didn’t last, he then dated actress Jillian Murray and they got married in 2017. He is set to release new music soon, after quite a long time.

JoSH PECK We all know Josh from the hilarious Nickelodeon show “Drake & Josh”, where he played Josh Nichols in a comedy about stepbrothers adjusting to each other’s lives. But what exactly happened to him after the show ended? Well, Josh’s career didn’t stop. He featured in other TV shows and movies, such as, Nickelodeon’s “Victorious”, “Ice Age”, as well as being the lead in the comedy series, “Grandfathered”. Josh Peck started a YouTube channel in 2017 and has also been featured on Youtuber’s David Dobrik’s channel. He also has a podcast where he interviews celebrities. In February this year, it was announced that Peck would star in a new Disney+ show. Josh is married to Paige O’Brien and they had a son in 2018, called Max, which is ironically the name of the baby in the “Drake & Josh” episode, “Two Idiots and a Baby”.

BoB THE BuiLDER Bob the Builder was a kids’ animated series, focusing on Bob, a builder, and his friends, which included Wendy and their talking work vehicles. It premiered in 1998, and since then, the series had been adapted into a spin-off series and was later revamped. The new version, now owned by Mattel, has received a lot of criticism for the re-design of the whole show. Not only have they changed the character designs and theme song lyrics, but they changed Bob’s iconic catchphrase. What once was “can we fix it?”, is now “can we build it?” How about, “can we change it back?”

o D N E T N i N Wii The Nintendo Wii first launched in 2006 and was a popular gaming system of its time. The Wii featured Mii’s, which were customisable characters, and featured iconic Wii songs that still get stuck in our heads to this day! Favourite games of many people are Wii Sports, Just Dance and Mario Kart. In 2013, the Wii was discontinued and on January 31, 2019, the Wii Shop was officially shut down. Despite the discontinuation of the Wii, the game series “Just Dance” has continued to release their new games each year on the Wii. In fact, 2019 marked 10 years of Just Dance, which was originally launched on Wii. Just Dance 2020 seems to be the last ever game released for Wii.
