1. Why test aquarium water?

In any given area the water quality is determined by local conditions. Pure rain water starts to absorb pollutants even as it falls through the atmosphere. As it permeates through the soil and lies as ground water, its chemical composition is affected by the nature of the earth's strata in the locality and the level of contaminants these contain.

The various treatments that are used to produce pure drinking water and the mains and pipes that carry the water to our homes can also contribute elements such as chlorine, copper and zinc that are harmful to aquarium life. Due to these many influences, no two types of tap water are alike - and vast differences often occur between neighbouring towns. The chemical and biological processes in an aquarium bring about still further changes in the water quality.

In order for the flora and fauna to thrive, the conditions in the aquarium have to be suitable and must correspond as closely as possible to those of their natural habitat. The biological balance and hence the wellbeing Wells, bore holes

2. The water values General and carbonate hardness ● General hardness (GH) The general hardness of water is determined by the concentration of calcium and magnesium salts. Where the level of these salts is high, the water is classified as hard and when it is low, as soft. A favourable GH value at which most ornamental fish can be kept, is between 6° dH and 16° dH (°dH = degrees of German hardness).

● Carbonate hardness (KH) As well as the calcium and magnesium salts already mentioned, almost every type of water contains further salt components, such as bicarbonate - their levels in the water are indicated by the KH-value. The bicarbonate have an important task to fulfill in the aquarium, acting as a pH-buffer and thus preventing a drastic or sudden change in the pH value, as in the case of an acid collapse.

Due to the close interaction between the KH and pH values, the carbonate hardness also has a direct influence on the wellbeing of all the organisms in the aquarium. A KH value between 3° dH and 10° dH is generally recommended though fish from the East African Rift lakes (Malawi and Tanganyika) are adapted to living with higher levels of carbonate hardness.

pH Value

The pH value is calculated from the total amount of acidic and basic substances dissolved in the water that could either acidify the water or turn it alkaline.

Chemically pure water has a pH value of 7 and is designated as neutral. In it the acid and alkaline components are equally balanced. The more acids that are present, the lower the pH value. The more basic components present, the higher the pH value rises. A sudden lowering of the pH value can occur, for instance, in very soft water if the bicarbonate (KH value) buffer is used up.

All fish, plants and micro-organisms are very sensitive to drastic changes in pH and for this reason you should test the pH value at least once a week. A pH value of between 6.5 and 8.5 will suit almost every species of fish encountered in the freshwater aquarium.

Fish originating from blackwater rivers prefer soft water with pH values between 6.0 and 7.5 whilst East African cichlids find values in the range between 7.5 and 8.5 and a high carbonate hardness very acceptable.

The nitrite content (NO2-) Due to fish excreta, decaying plant residues and left-over food, organic substances inevitably find their way into the water. In the course of biological breakdown, organic matter in solution in the aquarium water can form harmful nitrogenous substances. The first stage of this process is the formation of either toxic ammonia or non-poisonous ammonium. The pH value has a great effect on the amount of ammonia or ammonium formed: at a pH value of 7.0 and below, all that will form is non poisonous ammonium; if the pH moves to figures over 7.5-8, your aquarium may contain toxic levels of ammonia. In the second stage the ammonia is broken down into nitrite with the aid of Nitrosomonas bacteria. Nitrite is poisonous and very harmful to fish. So it is clear that if the nitrite figure is too high, water quality will be seriously affected. Aquaria with an effective filtration system have nitrite concentrations of 0.3 mg/l or lower. In the long term the nitrite content should not exceed 0.8 mg/l because at these levels it can have a dangerous effect on your fish.

The CO2 Content Carbon dioxide (CO2) constitutes an important basic element in the nutrition and

growth of plants. The optimum long term concentration in the aquarium is between 5 and 15 mg/l; concentrations in excess of this may produce adverse effects over a period of time.

3. The test procedure In order to ensure that you have a permanent monitoring system for the quality of your aquarium water, we recommend that you check out all the parameters once a week.

General and Carbonate Hardness General hardness and carbonate hardness are measured individually with the appropriate test solution. The same procedure applies to both tests: 1. Rinse the test vial and syringe with aquarium water.

2. Fill the test vial to the 5 ml mark using the syringe provided.

3. Hold the GH reagent-bottle for general hardness or KH bottle for the carbonate hardness over the test vial and release droplets of the test liquid one by one. After each droplet shake the test vial gently, repeating until the water changes colour.

For the GH Test: from RED to GREEN For the KH Test: from BLUE to YELLOW Note: if the colour change occurs right after the first drop, the level is between 0 and 1째 dH. The number of drops that need to be added to bring about the colour change corresponds to

the degree of hardness of the water (1 drop of test liquid = 1째 dH).

Once the measurement has been done, wash out the test vial and syringe with tap water.

Useful tip: If you use 10 ml of aquarium water in these tests, the accuracy of the measurements is enhanced (1 drop of test liquid = 1/2째 dH).

The pH Value 1. Rinse the test vial and syringe with aquarium water.

2. Fill the test vial with aquarium water to the 5 ml mark using the syringe provided.

3. Hold the pH reagent bottle over the test vial and add 7 drops.

4. Close the cover on the test vial and shake gently.

5. Compare with the pH colour scale (see enclosed colour chart) and read off the figures.

6. On completion of the test, rinse out the test vial and syringe with tap water.

The Nitrite Content (NO2-) 1. Rinse the test vial and syringe with aquarium water.

2. Fill the test vial to the 5 ml mark using the syringe provided.

3. Hold the reagent bottle over the test vial and add 7 drops of Nitrite 1 test liquid.

4. Close the cover on the test vial and shake gently.

5. After 10 seconds open the test vial and add 7 drops of Nitrite 2 test liquid.

6. Reclose the test vial and shake again.

7. Leave the test vial to stand for 2 to 5 minutes and then compare the shade of the liquid with the colour scale (see enclosed colour chart) and read off the figures.

8. On completion of the test, wash out the test vial and syringe with tap water.

The Tetratest Nitrite measures nitrite ion concentration (NO2-).

The CO2 Content Once you have determined the pH value and carbonate hardness, you will be able to work out the CO2 content of your aquarium water from the following CO2 calculation table. The figures relate to a water temperature of 25째C. The difference between CO2 values prevailing at other water temperatures and the figures shown in this table is insignificant.

The recommended CO2, pH and KH values are enclosed within the field marked in white.

4. What do you do if the figures look bad?

There is no single formula for obtaining the ideal aquarium water - nor can there be one, because no two aquariums are alike. Each and every one constitutes a unique and individual micro-habitat. The reasons for this

lie in the multitude of variables that make up the mini eco-system: the different stocking levels for fish and plants; the nature of the tap water; and, last but not least, aquarium size. We therefore recommend that you consult your local dealer at the outset when you are contemplating setting up an aquarium.

He will tell you the type of water that will best suit the fish you have in mind. If at some stage you find that your aquarium water quality has drifted into figures that are unacceptable, you should also ask your dealer for advice. He is sure to know a few tips that will enable you to bring back the right balance for your fish and plant stocks and without doubt he'll have the right product on his shelves.

A few basic ground rules • Carry out regular partial water changes, using the appropriate tap water conditioning product, such as TetraAqua AquaSafe, replacing 1/4 to 1/3 of the water every 2 to 4 weeks.

• Make sure that you have dense, healthy plant growth. Thriving plants take nitrate out of the water and thus stabilize the biological state of the aquarium. Use nitrateand phosphate-free fertilizers such as TetraPlant PlantaMin, TetraPlant Crypto and TetraPlant InitialSticks, because these supply the aquatic plants with balanced quan-

• Make sure that you have a properly functioning, biological filtration system suited both to the size of your tank and the number of fish in it.

• Avoid overstocking the aquarium with fish.

• Only give the fish the amount of food they can eat within a few minutes – we recommend the proven Tetra range of quality fish foods.

• In a newly set up tank the filtration system will take about 4 to 6 weeks to become biologically activated.

How to correct the water quality • If the nitrite content is too high, carry out an immediate water change using ready conditioned water.

• Where the CO2 value is too low you can raise it to a level within the optimum range by adding CO2 with the TetraPlant CO2-Optimat. An excessively high CO2 concentration can be lowered by aerating the aquarium with an aerator stone or an air pump, e.g. the Tetratec APS. • An excessively high pH value can be lowered by treatment with carbon dioxide (CO2) fertilizer using the TetraPlant CO2Optimat. CO2 acidifies the water and at the same time improves plant growth.

• If the pH value is too low, test the carbonate hardness of the aquarium water with

the Tetratest KH. Where the carbonate hardness is below 1° to 2° dH - or 6°dH in marine aquaria - then the water should be hardened by putting limestone or marble chippings in the tank. Generally speaking, the pH value of the water can also be raised by driving out excess CO2 or aerating the aquarium by means of the Tetratec APS aquarium air pump. Night-time aeration of the aquarium is thoroughly recommended.

1. Pourquoi tester l’eau de l’aquarium?

La qualité de l’eau dépend de son environnement. L’eau de pluie, initialement très pure, se charge déjà dans l’atmosphère en éléments polluants. En pénétrant dans le sol et en arrivant au stade de nappe phréatique, la composition chimique de l’eau de pluie est entièrement modifiée en fonction de la nature des couches géologiques traversées et de leur teneur en matières polluantes. Ensuite, le traitement de l’eau potable et les conduites d’eau peuvent introduire dans l’eau du robinet des éléments nocifs pour vos poissons, tels que le chlore, le cuivre ou le zinc. Tous ces différents facteurs font que l’eau du robinet présente une qualité très variable et souvent même une composition entièrement différente d’un lieu voisin à un autre. Les phénomènes chimiques et biologiques qui se produisent en aquarium modifient à leur tour la composition de l’eau.

Pour avoir des poissons et des plantes en parfaite santé, il faut que les propriétés de l’eau de votre aquarium correspondent le plus possible à celles de leur biotope naturel. Le maintien de cet équilibre biologique, et donc le bien-être des poissons et des plantes, dépend essentiellement de la qualité de l’eau.

Grâce à Tetratest Laborett, vous pouvez vérifier, de façon simple et précise, la dureté totale, la dureté carbonatée, la valeur du pH, la teneur en nitrite et en gaz carbonique de l’eau de votre aquarium.

2. Les propriétés de l’eau La dureté totale et la dureté carbonatée

La dureté totale (GH)

La dureté totale de l’eau dépend de sa teneur en certains sels, en particulier en sels de calcium et de magnésium. Une eau contenant une grande proportion de ces sels est qualifiée de “dure” tandis qu’une faible proportion de ces sels la rend “douce”.

Las características del agua vienen determinadas por el entorno. Ya en la atmósfera, el agua pura de lluvia absorbe sustancias nocivas del medio ambiente. Al filtrarse en el suelo y como agua subterránea vuelve a cambiar su composición química en dependencia de la contaminación de las capas de la tierra. También debido al tratamiento del agua potable o debido a las tuberías pueden llegar al agua de grifo sustancias como cloro, cobre o cinc, que son nocivas para los habitantes del acuario. Debido a estas diversas influencias, el agua de grifo varía mucho, teniendo a veces ya en la población vecina una composición completamente distinta. Los procesos biológicos y químicos que tienen lugar en el acuario hacen que la composición del agua cambie nuevamente.

Para que peces y plantas crezcan sanos, las condiciones de su habitat en el acuario deben ser las adecuadas, asemejándose en lo posible a las de su biótopo natural. El equilibrio biológico y con ello el bienestar de peces y plantas depende esencialmente de la calidad del agua.

Con el Tetratest Laborett puede usted determinar de forma segura y exacta la dureza total, la dureza de carbonatos, el valor pH, el contenido de nitritos y de dióxido de carbono del agua de su acuario.

2. Los valores del agua: Dureza total y dureza de carbonatos ● La dureza total (GH) La dureza total del agua viene determinada por diversas sales (sobre todo calcio y magnesio).

Si el contenido en estas sales es elevado, se trata de un agua dura; si es bajo, el agua es blanda. La dureza total influye esencialmente en las funciones orgánicas de todos los seres vivos en el agua. El valor GH idóneo para el mantenimiento de los peces ornamentales en perfectas condiciones oscila entre 6° dH y 16° dH (° dH = grado de dureza alemana).

● La dureza de carbonatos (KH) Además de las sales calcio y magnesio que acabamos de mencionar, casi todo tipo de agua contiene otros componentes salinos, p.ej. carbonatos hidrógenos, cuya concentración se indica a través del valor KH. A los carbonatos hidrógenos les corresponde en el acuario un papel importante dado que tienen un efecto tampón del pH, evitando así oscilaciones demasiado acusadas y rápidas del valor pH (p.ej. la brusca caída de ácidos). Debido a la estrecha relación entre

valor KH y valor pH, la dureza de carbonatos tiene además una influencia directa en el bienestar de todo ser vivo en el acuario. Un valor KH entre 3° dH y 10° dH es lo recomendable. Peces procedentes de los lagos de Africa oriental (Malawi, Tanganyica) están acostumbrados a durezas de carbonatos más elevadas.

● El valor pH El valor pH es el resultado de todas las materias ácidas y básicas disueltas en el agua, que o bien acidifican el agua o la vuelven alcalina.

Agua químicamente pura tiene un valor pH de 7 y es denominada neutral. En este caso, los componentes ácidos y alcalinos están en equilibrio. Cuanto mayor es la presencia de ácidos en el agua, tanto más va bajando el valor pH; y cuanto más bases haya, tanto más aumenta dicho valor. Una baja muy rápida

del valor pH, la llamada caída brusca de ácidos, puede p. ej. darse en un agua muy blanda cuando los carbonatos hidrógenos con su función de tampón se han agotado.

Todos los peces, plantas y microorganismos reaccionan de forma muy sensible a las fuertes oscilaciones del valor pH. Por ello, usted debería comprobar el valor pH como mínimo una vez a la semana. Para casi todos los peces ornamentales se consideran apropiados valores pH de entre 6,5 y 8,5.

Los peces procedentes de ríos de agua negra prefieren agua blanda con valores pH entre 6,0 y 7,5. Los Cíclidos procedentes de Africa oriental están muy a gusto cuando los valores pH oscilan entre 7,5 y 8,5.

El contenido de nitritos (NO2-) A través de los excrementos de los peces, restos de comida y plantas se presentan en el agua sustancias orgánicas. Las materias disueltas en el agua, durante su desintegración biológica, pueden formar sustancias nocivas que contienen nitrógeno. El primer paso de este proceso es la formación de amoníaco tóxico ó de amonio no venenoso.

Cuál de ambos se ha formado se lo indica el valor pH. Con un valor pH de 7,0 e inferior, se forma exclusivamente el amonio no venenoso.

Si el valor pH es superior a 7,5 - 8,0 su acuario ya contiene el amoníaco venenoso.

En la segunda fase, el amoníaco es desintegrado en nitrito con la ayuda de bacterias nitrosomonas. El nitrito es venenoso y muy dañino para los peces. Si el valor de nitritos es elevado, la calidad del agua ha quedado considerablemente deteriorada.

En los acuarios con un sistema de filtraje intacto, la concentración de nitritos es inferior o igual a 0,3 mg/l. El contenido de nitritos no debería a largo plazo sobrepasar 0,8 mg/l dado que un valor de 1,6 mg/l ya puede ser problemático para sus peces.

El contenido de CO2 El dióxido de carbono (CO2) es una base importante para la alimentación y el crecimiento de las plantas acuáticas. La concentración permanente óptima en el acuario asciende de 5 hasta 15 mg/l: concentraciones superiores de CO2 pueden ser nocivas para los peces ornamentales si su efecto es prolongado.

3. La secuencia del test Para saber siempre cuál es la calidad del agua de su acuario, recomendamos comprobar una vez por semana todos los valores del agua.

Dureza total y dureza de carbonatos La dureza total y la dureza de carbonatos se miden por separado con la ayuda de los correspondientes líquidos de análisis.

1. Enjuagar la cubeta y la jeringa dosificadora con agua de acuario.

2. Introducir en la cubeta 5 ml de agua de acuario con la ayuda de la jeringa dosificadora.

3. Mantener las botellas cuentagotas GH para la dureza total y KH para la dureza de carbonatos en posición vertical sobre la abertura de la

cubeta y añadir el respectivo líquido de análisis gota por gota. Después de cada gota, agitar ligeramente la cubeta hasta que se produzca el cambio del color.

En el caso de GH: de ROJO a VERDE En el caso de KH: de AZUL a AMARILLO Nota: Si el cambio de color se produce tras la primera gota, el valor se encuentra entre 0° y 1° dH. El número de gotas gastadas hasta el cambio del color corresponde al grado de dureza del agua (1 gota del líquido de análisis = 1° dH).

Una vez terminada la medición, la cubeta y la jeringa dosificadora se enjuagan bajo el agua de grifo.

Advertencia: Haciendo el análisis con 10 ml de agua de acuario, la exactitud de medición aumenta (1 gota de líquido de análisis = 1/2° dH).

Advertencia: Manténgase fuera del alcance de los niños. En caso de ingestión, acúdase inmediatamente al médico y muéstresele la etiqueta o el envase.

Elimínense esta sustancia y su recipiente en un punto de recogida pública de residuos especiales o peligrosos.

Xn GH: Fácilmente inflaF mable. Posibilidad de sensibilización por inFácilmente Nocivo! y por inflamable! halación contacto con la piel. No respirar vapor/aerosol. Evítese el contacto con la piel. Contiene piperazina.

KH: Inflamable.

El valor pH 1. Enjuagar la cubeta y la jeringa dosificadora con agua de acuario.

2. Introducir 5 ml de agua de acuario en la cubeta con la ayuda de la jeringa dosificadora.

3. Colocar la botella cuentagotas pH en posición vertical sobre la cubeta e introducir 7 gotas.

4. Cerrar la cubeta con su tapa y agitar

ligeramente.

5. Comparar la coloración con la escala de colores pH (véase tarjeta de colores adjunta) y leer el valor medido.

6. Una vez terminada la medición, enjuagar la cubeta y la jeringa dosificadora bajo el agua de grifo.

Advertencia: Inflamable.

Irrita los ojos. La inhalación de vapores puede provocar Irritante! somnolencia y vértigo.

Manténgase fuera del alcance de los niños. En caso de ingestión, acúdase inmediatamente al médico y muéstresele la etiqueta o el envase.

Elimínense esta sustancia y su recipiente en un punto de recogida pública de residuos especiales o peligrosos.

El contenido de nitritos (NO2-) 1. Enjuagar la cubeta y la jeringa dosificadora con agua de acuario.

2. Introducir 5 ml de agua de acuario en la cubeta con la ayuda de la jeringa dosificadora.

3. Colocar la botella cuentagotas en posición vertical sobre la abertura de la cubeta e introducir 7 gotas del líquido de análisis Nitrito 1.

7. Dejar reposar la cubeta de 2 a 5 minutos; a continuación comparar la tonalidad del líquido con la escala de colores (véase tarjeta de colores adjunta) y leer el valor medido.

8. Una vez terminada la medicion, enjuagar la cubeta y la jeringa dosificadora bajo el agua de grifo.

Nota: El Kit Tetratest Nitrito mide la concentración de nitrito e iones (NO2-). Para hallar el valor de la concen-

tración de nitrito y nitrógeno en mg/l, divida el valor obtenido en la prueba por 3,3.

El contenido de CO2 De la tabla de cálculo del CO2 puede usted deducir el contenido de CO2 del agua de su acuario una vez comprobado el valor pH así como la dureza de carbonatos. Los valores se refieren a una temperatura del agua de 25°C. Si las temperaturas del agua son distintas, los valores CO2 difieren de forma insignificante de los valores indicados en la tabla. Los valores recomendables de CO2, pH y KH son los enmarcados.

4. ¿Qué hacer si los valores del agua son malos?

co. Los motivos para ello son las diferencias en la población de peces y densidad de plantas, la calidad del agua de grifo y, no en último lugar, el tamaño del acuario. Le recomendamos por ello hacerse aconsejar por un experto del ramo. En una tienda especializada le dirán cuáles son los valores del agua favorables para sus peces y plantas.

Si los valores del agua no se mueven dentro de los parámetros aceptables, debería igualmente acudir a una tienda especializada. Allí le indicarán cómo podrá lograr los valores de agua favorables de acuerdo con la población de peces y densidad de plantas, disponiendo además de los productos para el tratamiento del agua.

Algunas normas fundamentales a tener siempre en cuenta: • Cambie con regularidad una parte del agua (1/4 hasta 1/3 del agua cada 2 a 4 semanas), utilizando productos para el tratamiento del agua como p. ej. TetraAqua AquaSafe.

• Procure que el crecimiento de las plantas sea sano y abundante. Porque las plantas que crecen sanas sustraen el nitrato del agua, estabilizando con ello los procesos biológicos en el acuario. Utilice abonos sin nitratos y fosfatos, como p. ej. TetraPlant PlantaMin, TetraPlant Crypto y TetraPlant InitialSticks, ya que éstos proporcionan a las

• Cuide de que el filtraje biológico esté intacto y que corresponda al tamaño de su acuario y a la población de peces.

• Evite una población de peces demasiado densa.

• Administre únicamente (recomendamos la acredita comida de calidad Tetra) la cantidad de comida que los peces pueden comer dentro de pocos minutos.

• En las nuevas instalaciones, el sistema de filtraje necesita aproximadamente 4-6 semanas para su activación biológica.

• Si el contenido de nitritos es demasiado elevado, cambie inmediatamente el agua por agua tratada.

• Un valor demasiado bajo de CO2 puede subirse hasta valores óptimos adicionando CO2 con el TetraPlant CO2-Optimat. Una concentración demasiado elevada de CO2 se reduce mediante aireación del acuario a través de una piedra de escape o una bomba de aire, p. ej. la bomba de aire Tetratec.

• Un valor demasido alto de pH se corrige mediante un abono con dióxido de carbono (CO2) con el sistema CO2 de Tetra. CO2 acidifica el agua y mejora al mismo tiempo el crecimiento de las plantas.

• Si el valor pH es demasiado bajo, verificar con el Tetratest KH la dureza de carbonatos del agua del acuario. Si la dureza de carbonatos es inferior a 1° hasta 2° dH ó en agua de mar inferior a 6° dH, se recomienda hacer más dura el agua mediante cal de dolomía o gravilla de mármol. En general también resulta posible aumentar el valor pH del agua mediante la evacuación del CO2 sobrante, p. ej. aireando el acuario mediante la bomba de aire Tetra para acuarios. Es recomendable airear siempre el acuario durante la noche.

En caso de problemas específicos, su tienda del ramo seguramente le proporcionará los consejos necesarios.

1. Porquê analisar a água do aquário?

A qualidade da água depende do meioambiente. A água da chuva, inicialmente pura, absorve substâncias poluentes quando atravessa a atmosfera. Ao penetrar no solo, forma lençóis freáticos e a sua composição química é inteiramente alterada em função da natureza das camadas geológicas atravessadas e do seu teor em substâncias poluentes. Também o tratamento da água potável e as condutas podem introduzir na água da torneira elementos nocivos para os peixes, tais como cloro, cobre ou zinco.

Todos estes factores fazem com que a água da torneira apresente uma qualidade muito

variável e muitas vezes mesmo uma composição inteiramente diferente de região para região. Os fenómenos químicos e biológicos que se produzem no aquário modificam, por sua vez, a composição da água.

Para que os peixes e as plantas se mantenham de perfeita saúde, torna-se necessário que as propriedades da água do seu aquário correspondam o mais possível às do seu biótopo natural. A manutenção deste equilíbrio biológico, e por conseguinte o bem-estar dos peixes e das plantas, depende essencialmente da qualidade da água.
