T

he City of Harrisburg is contracted with the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society in Sioux Falls. Any lost animals or animals in violation of city ordinances will be brought to SFAHS, (605) 338-4441.

O

wners of any dog, cat, or other animal held as a domestic pet shall license their animals annually and keep their shots up to date the cost of a license is $5.00 per pet per year. Licenses and tags may be obtained at City Hall.

Owners of any dog, cat, or other animal held as a domestic pet shall not permit such animal to run at large at any time. A leash is required at all times. If found, these animals are impounded and expenses and fines are paid by the owner.

The City and Sheriff’s Department receive many complaints of barking dogs. These cases may be considered a disturbance of the peace by animals. Please take necessary steps to prevent this to avoid being fined.

Burgeoning Ransom Church Expands To Harrisburg

D

ue to extraordinary growth, the Ransom Church, formerly only in downtown Sioux Falls, started services at its second campus in Harrisburg in March.

Pastor Wayne Doiron is the Harrisburg Campus pastor, (as well as the church’s Compassion Ministry pastor), ably-assisted by his wife, Threasa.

Pastor Doiron hastens to clarify that the new campus is not a “church plant” but represents one church with multiple locations. Services are held at the Harrisburg Middle School, 600 S. Cliff Avenue, Harrisburg.

The site features a full service with live worship and music, and video teaching from lead pastor, Phill Tague. It also features Ransom Kids (child care) for ages newborn through 5th grade.

T

he church has grown rapidly since its beginning in 2009. Church leadership felt that simply moving to a larger facility at the outskirts of town was not the answer to the overcrowding challenges they’ve consistently faced. After much prayerful consideration, it was decided that a second campus was God’s answer to the challenge of overcrowded worship space, while at the same time extending Ransom’s reach with the hope of the Gospel to surrounding communities. Locating this campus in Harrisburg better serves the rapidly expanding south-side metro area, as well as surrounding communities such as Tea and Canton.

T

he Ransom Church’s mission statement is “Worship free. Live free.

Serve free” or, more specifically, to “worship free of inhibition, live free of sin, serve free of self.” The church’s name “Ransom” comes from the verse, Matt. 20:28: “… the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

A

headline on the church’s website, theransomchurch.org, succinctly captures what many are feeling these days. It reads: “Have you lost hope in church, but not in God?” Ransom Church leaders believe the church’s attendance figures reflect the fact that God is restoring that hope in His church.

“

People are not only in need of, but are actually desiring a church that is warm and welcoming, and is authentic in its presentation of the Hope of the Gospel message,” noted Pastor Doiron. Apparently, as evidenced by the congregation’s growth, the message is striking a chord with a high percentage of visitors who soon become regular attendees.

he Wesleyan congregation, founded by Pastor Phill Tague and his wife Stephani, and Pastor Phil Wiseman, and his wife Natalie, began originally as a “plant” from Linwood Wesleyan Church in Sioux Falls. They first met at the Carmike Cinema 7 in 2009 with approximately 35 people.

When attendance reached 300 people in 2011, the congregation bought and renovated the former Crescent Electric building at 700 N. Main Avenue, Sioux Falls, now the downtown campus affectionately known as “the Warehouse.”

hill Tague, with his humor and every-man delivery, remains as Lead Pastor. Phil Wiseman is Creative Arts Pastor, distinguishing the church’s broad musical range and participation.

ealing with ever-growing attendance, the church added a third Sunday morning service in 2012, and moved its office space to a suite in the Harvester Building at 196 East 6th Street in 2013, making more room for the nursery and children’s ministry. Drawing approximately 1200 attendees per week, the downtown campus is now remodeling its lower level to more fully define the children’s area.

City Of Harrisburg 2013 Drinking Water Report Last year, the City of Harrisburg monitored your drinking water for possible contaminants. This brochure is a snapshot of the quality of the water that we provided last year. Included are details about where your water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state standards. We are committed to providing you with information because informed customers are our best allies.

WATER SOURCE We serve more than 4,300 customers an average of 290,000 gallons of water per day. Our water is groundwater that we purchase from another water system. The state has performed an assessment of our source water and they have determined that the relative susceptibility rating for the Harrisburg public water supply system is medium.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity.

Contaminants that may be present in source water include: Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife.

Inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally-occurring or result from urban storm water runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming.

Pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban storm water runoff, and residential uses.

Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, urban storm water runoff, and septic systems.

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections.

These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants can be obtained by calling the Environment Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. The City of Harrisburg public water supply system is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/ safewater/lead.

DETECTED CONTAMINANTS The attached table lists all the drinking water contaminants that we detected during the 2013 calendar year. The presence of these contaminants in the water does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. Unless otherwise noted, the data presented in this table is from testing done January 1 – December 31, 2013 The state requires us to monitor for certain contaminants less than once per year because the concentrations of these contaminants are not expected to vary significantly from year to year. Some of the data, though representative of the water quality, is more than one year old.

In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by ANNUAL

HIGH SCHOOL Six Steps To Finding The Perfect Prom Dress MCKEELY ANDERSEN

P

rom is near, and no matter what grade you are in, every girl thinks of her “perfect” prom dress. I have some tips on finding the perfect one to fit you.

First, plan ahead. Everyone thinks about what they want, whether that is the color, the design, or the uniqueness of the dress. Second, set a decent budget. If you know how much you want to spend already, that’s great! However, if you are not completely sure, find the prom dresses that you like, and then decide which one you want that is decently priced. Third, take measurements. Sure, you might know your dress size and pants size and everything you wear on a daily basis, but prom dresses are different, so make sure to double check and grab a measuring tape and measure the following areas; bust, waist, hips, and height. Then, if you are looking online, make sure to check the size chart for exact measurements. Fourth, know what type of fabric and color fits you and that you like the best. Fifth, think of the type of style you would prefer. Sixth, decide whether you want to be one-of-a-kind and unique or plain and simple? Seventh, go to a store, try on a few dresses you like best, and if you cannot find one in a store, go online and look. If you go online, you can go to sites where you can find the style you like, type in your measurements, and find the best one for you. Finally, remember to have fun!

arch 7-10, 2014. Twenty-eight students and 5 chaperons flew from Omaha to NYC to participate in the National Youth Choir Festival held at Carnegie Hall. Students were able to take in some of the New York sites such as the musical “Wicked” at the famous Gershwin theater, took the subway/ferry to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, 9/11 memorial, Top of the Rock, Trinity Church (where National Treasure was filmed) St. Paul’s church/memorial site, Grand Central Terminal, Canyon of Heroes, Wall Street, New York Stock Exchange, sang the National Anthem at the Inaugural site/Statue of George Washington , Time Square, Cake Boss, and a variety of various restaurants. etc. Students also logged many hours of vocal rehearsals at the historic Roosevelt Hotel with other singers from across the country. (Florida, California, Georgia, Oklahoma, Washington) The Concert at Carnegie Hall was conducted by Dr. Anton Armstrong from St. Olaf College.

Regional Vocal Contest at Augustana

M

any members of the High School Choir took part in the Regional 2 Vocal Solo and Small Ensemble Contest on March 11, 2014; held in the Humanities Center on the campus of Augustana College. 13 Soloists and 9 ensembles received Superior ratings for a total of 71 medals and pins. It should be noted that Abby Hatch received a PERFECT score for her vocal solo and ABBY HATCH and KIRA LOFTESNESS received a perfect score for their vocal duet.

North Central Division Honor Choir Dan Mastick---auditioned for and was accepted into this prestigious National Honor Choir. Dan will be traveling to DesMoines, IA for a 3 day festival to sing with other top notch vocalists from around the United States.

arrisburg high school students participating in away events were very excited to see the new activity bus roll into the parking lot this past month. The bus was delivered with a white exterior, but HHS artist Traci Heiberger created a design which lets everyone know the Tigers are on the prowl. CustomEyez Designs, a local Harrisburg business, also aided with the design and wrapped the bus.

ur AA student athletes sometimes put in long hours traveling around the state, and this new bus allows students to ride in comfort. The district purchased a “regular” school bus and had it retrofitted with bucket seats and overhead lighting with storage underneath for bags and equipment. Students also have Internet access to allow them ability to do homework while they travel. Overall, the district saved a significant amount of money while allowing students to travel in style and comfort.

he Harrisburg Girls Basketball team’s inaugural season in class ‘AA’ came to a close last weekend at the state tournament in Brookings. The Tigers finished the season with an overall record of 15-11 and an 8th place finish at ESPN 99.1 FM named Alex Johnson Athlete of the Week February 24th, state. Coming off a class ‘A’ state title the previous season, expectations 2014 for her leadership role on the girls basketbal team and overall were high even with the change in classes. The Tigers exceeded those exsucccess this year. We congratulate Alex on her accomplishments this pectations with outstanding effort, teamwork and attitude. his year for state wrestling Harrisburg had five qualifiers. Those wrestlers were Jacob Hanssen (106, 8th), Taylor Dalen (120, 9th), Lane Warzecha (170, 11th), Matt Schirado (195, 11th), and Kyle Hansen (220, 12th).

Of these five boys, two placed in the top eight in the state. Matt Schirado placed first in the 195-pound class and Kyle Hansen placed sixth in the 220-pound class.

att Schirado wrestled Tyler Kleinsasser from Huron for first place. The match started out extremely intense. The two went back and fourth getting points on each other. In the third period, Matt ended up pinning Tyler Kleinsasser and taking home first place. Congratulations, Matt!

Since it is Kyle’s senior year, the level of excitement was quite high.

Kyle is well known for waiting until the last minute and keeping everyone on the edge of their seats.

After a long, intense year of practices and many tournaments, everyone was very excited for State Wrestling in Rapid City.

s you may already know, the 2013-2014 athletics at Harrisburg High School are part of a big transition from last year. We have now moved from our previous class of 11A to the highest class of athletics in South Dakota of 11AA. Many people thought we would struggle in sports for a few years, but I believe we have done a great job in proving people wrong. The girls’ basketball team has now made their second straight appearance to the State Tournament. The boys’ basketball team had their best season since 2010 with nine wins, in addition to the tougher level of play. In this year’s football season, we advanced to the semi-finals and almost earned ourselves a trip to the state championship game. There were also athletes that competed and placed at state in both cross-country and wrestling. Those are just a few of the examples of our athletic success in our first year of transition from 11A to 11AA. We have accomplished more in our first transition year than many schools have accomplished in their 10th year in class 11AA. Our athletic success at Harrisburg High School has turned a lot of heads around the state, and I expect there to be even more in upcoming years.

he Harrisburg Tiger wrestling team wrapped up their season with Matt Schirado winning the State Championship at 195 lbs. Kyle Hansen was 6th at 220 lbs. and the team took 15th at the State Tournament. The team qualified three others for the State Tournament 8th grader Jacob Hanssen (106), Freshman Taylor Dalen (120) and Junior Lane Warzecha (170).

he end of the year banquet was held on March 17th.

40 wrestlers were given awards with 15 majoring and 25 given the participation award. Captains chosen by the team were Senior Kyle Hansen, Junior Lane Warzecha and Junior Matt Schirado. The Most Improved Wrestler was Jacob Hanssen and the outstanding wrestler for the 2013-14 season was Matt Schirado.

he team looks for a bright future with 37 of the 40 wrestlers will be back next year. The wrestlers are looking forward to attending the Nebraska Team wrestling camp in June where we get to compete against top teams in the Midwest. T

he Harrisburg Tigers baseball team is coming off two consecutive State Tournament appearances and look to make an impression as the newcomer in Class AA. The Tigers return eight of nine starters, including their entire pitching rotation, which was key to the team’s success last season. Last year the team finished with an 11-5 record, which included a 10-game winning streak.

The move to Class AA will pose a challenge to the Tigers, but they have prepared by playing teams such as O’Gorman, Washington, and Brandon Valley over the past two seasons. The team returns two 1st Team All-State players in senior Dalton Allen and junior Drew Andela, along with four All-Region selections in Aaron Bunger, Brandon Bartling, Jace Saxon, and Clay Miller. Other returning players looking to make an impact include Cody Cook, JT Miller, Kyle Corcoran, and Dylan Tams. The 2014 season is set to open on March 25th against Sioux Falls Roosevelt at Harmodon Park as the Tigers look to achieve expectations and make a run towards another State Tournament appearance.

HHS Staff Run Across America HAILEY HALLING

C

ould you actually run across America? That was the question that crossed through the minds of some HHS faculty members. Mr. Langerock and thirteen other staff members created a club to see if they could run across America during the second semester. Each member of the club contributes anywhere from 5 miles a week up to 40 miles a week, and then there are a couple that far-surpass even that! Hanging in Mr. Langerock’s room is a map of the United States. Traveling on route 66 from the east to the west, the group has made it to nine major cities and has about 1,468.85 miles left before the end of the school year. They just left Canon City, Colorado, and are on their way to Thompson, Utah.

During the 3rd quarter I saw so many teachers running after school on the treadmills while we had basketball practice. Many teachers also run during their planning period. Now that it is starting to get nice out, I would imagine that many of the teachers are going to start running outside. The teachers say that the reason they are in the club is because it is a fun way to stay in shape, an easy way to train for a race, or for the enjoyment of running.

his spring at Harrisburg High School, many students are starting their workouts for this year’s track season. Runners are sprinting, long distance people are running miles through town, jumpers are working on their verticals, throwers are hitting the weight room and working on their form. The new addition to the Harrisburg track team, is the Pole Vaulting.

The brave people that are trying it have been working on the proper way to hold and carry the pole. Everyone has been working very hard to prepare for this season.

r. Kevin Kroger is the head coach for the track team, along with being the sprinters’ coach. He has been coaching at Harrisburg for 26 years. The throwing coach is Mr. Hirt; he has been coaching for two years now. The distance running coach is Mrs. Hofer; she has been coaching for 5 years. The long jump, triple jump, and high jump coaches are Coach Vlastuin and Coach Chandler, and this is their first year coaching. The hurdling coaches are Mr. Langerock, who has been coaching for 15 years, and Mr. Yale who has been coaching for 20 years. The pole vault coach is Coach Pohlmann, and this is his first year coaching at Harrisburg.

ith 85 people signed up for track this year, we are all looking forward to the first track meet the 24th of March in Vermillion. This will be the first time for us to test out all of our hard work that we have put in at track practice. We have 10 regular track meets this year and then on to State. Good luck to all athletes.

HHS Choir Performs At Carnagie Hall KRYSTAL KVALHEIM

T

he 2014 Harrisburg choir was honored enough to visit New York City and sing in the one and only Carnegie Hall. Only a handful of people are able to do this in their lifetime, and the small town of Harrisburg was one of them. With only having the music for a few days before leaving, we practiced and studied the music tremendously before hopping on the bus at 1:30 AM on Friday morning. Friday was an exhausting day, as we didn’t want to miss a thing! More than half of the time of us being in New York we were practicing singing the pieces with multiple schools, making each and every note sound perfect.

O

nce rehearsal was finished, we took the rest of the day that was left for us and visited many important monuments and buildings that was there for us to see. One of the places we visited was Ground Zero.

This had the greatest impact on me, personally, seeing the area that 9/11 took place. I will never forget that day as we stood there and saw all the names that surrounded the new monument that was put in place to honor those who lost their lives. After all the site seeing and performing the songs we had worked so hard on, it was time to begin heading home to the lives we are so grateful for.

oing into the trip, I didn’t expect that we would all come home with the different views on the way we lived here in South Dakota and how much we are all blessed to live in such a clean environment and around such caring people. This trip was such a great experience for everyone that was able to go, and everyone will have the memory of standing in front of so many people doing the one thing we all love, singing.

Drama Club To Travel To Big Apple OLIVIA WEIGEL

H

arrisburg High School has added yet another opportunity for those who are interested in theatre and improv. Mr. Smith, one of Harrisburg’s theatre directors, is taking a group of students to New York City this spring to experience how professional theatre is put together and performed. This trip was planned last school year, and the group plans to make this trip an opportunity every year for students who would like to attend.

he trip begins May 20th and goes through the 25th. The drama club is comprised of students who love theatre and perform in the school performances throughout the year. There have been fundraisers organized during the year to help the students pay for the trip. Usually these fundraisers are shows that Mr. Smith and the students put together. They arrange and perform their own show two or three times during the year called “Thursday Night Live.” It is a $5 show, usually a comedy, that includes a number of skits that the students wrote and planned out themselves.

hose that attend the trip will see a variety of performances, including a Broadway show, attend workshops, go on a tour of the city, and much more. There are exciting opportunities in New York for this group to see, experience, and learn.

DECA teaches skills about business for the future, having what it takes to be a leader, and communication skills, all of which will benefit the members later in their careers.

his is Harrisburg’s second year offering DECA to students. February 10th and 11th of 2014, we sent seven students to state DECA held in Sioux Falls. Vandi Bymers and Brody Mouw partnered and competed in the buying & merchandising challenge, taking first place. Josh Boraas and Dylan Tams competed in principles of marketing.

atie Gjerdrum and Ellie McDowell teamed up and competed in hotel management and leadership and will both be attending the National Leadership Conference. Katie took first place in the leadership event.

Abby Hatch competed in marketing management and principles of finance. Nationals for DECA will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, this May, and we are proud to be sending five of our members. Going to Nationals are Vandi, Brody, Katie, Ellie, and Abby, led by their DECA advisor, Mr. Bunkers.

Leadership Class Gives Back

O

n February 26, the Leadership and Service Learning Class participated in their third quarter community service project. Dalton Allen, Danielle Wilson, Logan Slack, Spencer Kruse, Kain Kittelson, Abbie Johnson, Ashlynne Beninga, Ashlyn Christensen, Sarah Gjerdrum and Khia Zomer spent their morning helping prepare the various residential playrooms at the Children’s Home Society by sanitizing toys and general cleaning. By doing these simple duties, they helped make the areas sanitary during cold and flu season and gave more time to counselors and caretakers to be with their clients. They also enjoyed a tour of the facility including their school. After lunch, each student spent the afternoon working with and helping a teacher at Explorer Elementary. All enjoyed their varied experiences from preparing for a school-wide fundraising event, reading and writing with students, attending PE, to general helping with classroom activities.

his class requirement helps students understand that an important part of life and leadership is to give back to the community, and also to discover that it can be fun as well as rewarding.

n the month of February, student council had an exciting month bringing two new events to the Harrisburg student body and community. This past month, we hosted the first ever prom dress sale in which twenty percent of profits were donated to Children Miracle Network. The sale was an opportunity for students to sell their old dress clothes for upcoming dances with a percentage of profits benefits children and for students to buy excellent dresses at discounted prices. The sale encompassed many schools in our area and was a huge success generating over six hundred dollars of Children Miracle Network. Additionally this month, Harrisburg Student Council added some fun to the school by selling the results to our personality test.

S

tudent Council still has a busy year left, with several fundraisers, survivor, and spring fling week still upcoming. This past week, the annual survivor competition will be held and is going to encourage more participation from the whole student body than ever in order to boost school spirit. We hope to build upon past years to make the competition more exciting as we crown a new champion.

Throughout the year of 2013-2014, the chapter was able to complete three projects that involved the house and the families that live within.

orty HOSA members traveled to The University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota for Scrubs Camp. Scrubs Camp is a free, one-day, hands-on health career camp where students have the ability to talk to healthcare professionals. There were various rotations that the students were able to attend including: pharmacy, nursing, medical laboratory science, dentistry, and tour the gross anatomy lab. The students were able to learn more about different health careers and what schools offer the training for the careers. It helped some students decide on what career they should go into or help them become closer to figuring out what career they want to do. Most of the students thought that Scrubs Camp was a good experience, and they learned a lot. Colter Benson said “It was a great opportunity to realize the potential of in-state medical education”. Another student said “The gross anatomy lab was my favorite because it was so cool to see different organs, parts, and structures of the body”. Overall, the HOSA members thought that Scrubs Camp was a great experience and they learned a lot about different health careers.

FFA Floriculture Record Setting Season!

F

or the past three weeks, many members of the Harrisburg FFA chapter have been traveling across eastern South Dakota competing in Career Development Events or otherwise called CDE’s. A CDE is a competition where the member demonstrates their knowledge and skill abilities in an area of agriculture that interests them. Harrisburg members compete in areas ranging from agronomy to livestock or landscaping to milk quality.

ne of the Harrisburg CDE teams that has enjoyed unprecedented success this year has been the floriculture team. In the floriculture CDE, members demonstrate their knowledge of the floral industry by taking a written test, properly identifying 50 different cut flowers, and creating a floral arrangement. This year, four seniors and four freshmen have been competing in floriculture and have done extremely well! For the first time in Harrisburg FFA history, our floriculture team placed first not just once, but twice in consecutive CDE’s! Three of the seniors, Allie Flanders, Macy Moir and Sami Cumberland have been competing in this event for the past four years. The remaining senior, Amanda Smeenk is only in her second year of floriculture. The four freshmen who are only in there first year of competition are Austin Harris, Samantha Wood, MacKenzie Gropel, and Alysen Voss.

T

he many hours of practice and years of experience are paying off as our results so far this year are as follows. Howard CDE’s, second place team (out of 18 teams)with Flanders placing 3rd overall and Cumberland placing 5th. DeSmet CDE’s, first place team (out of 18) with Smeenk, Cumberland, & Harris placing first through third respectively and Flanders finished ninth.

Our most recent CDE was at Flandreau where Harrisburg once again placed first overall (out of 25 teams) with Smeenk placing fifth, Harris sixth, Cumberland seventh and Moir ninth. The freshman and senior teams were not separated at Flandreau but if they were, the seniors would have still finished first and the freshmen would have placed sixth, quite an accomplishment for students in their first year of competing! Students placing in the top ten will receive medals for their efforts and the top three teams will receive plaques.

H

arrisburg will compete in two more CDE’s prior to our state convention and final CDE’s on April 6-8. On March 26 we will be in Lennox and on March 31 at Tri-Valley. The team will have to be narrowed down to four members for the State event and point totals are very close for the third and fourth positions. Time will tell if senior experience or freshmen enthusiasm will win out!

T

he thrill of hunting is something I live for, especially waterfowl hunting! Most of you may not know, but the snow goose is one of the hardest waterfowl species to hunt. With adequate preparation, though, you can be successful. There are many steps you need to consider to prepare for a good hunt.

Mr. Michael Amolins has earned his Doctoral Degree from the University of South Dakota. His dissertation, “Evaluating the Effectiveness of a Laboratory-Based Professional Development Program for Science Educators”, was successfully completed and defended on March 19th after two-and-one-half years of labor. N

ot many people know this but hunting is based on eighty percent scouting and twenty percent actual hunting. Once you find the birds and are ready to hunt, you need to get a license.

You can get one of these at Scheels or Ace. The Game Fish and Parks have set the daily limit and the possession limit at Unlimited. The spring light goose dates are from February 15th to May 4th. Your light goose includes, Snows, Blues, and Ross’ geese. Then comes the actual hunt. The first item you need to have is warm clothes because you will not enjoy a cold hunt! This includes bibs, boots, gloves, hat, and a jacket. The next thing you need to get ready is your gun. I prefer to shoot my twelve gauge Mossberg.

One thing that goes along with preparation of your gun is shells.

You should shoot BB, BBB, or T shot, but make sure you use steel shot or a non-toxic shot. You must also have the proper decoys when hunting over land. My group, the Dakota Fowlers, hunts over 500 Silosocks for our decoys. The last thing you will need is a blind. In particular, you will need a lay out blind that you can camouflage with corn stubble and mud so you can be properly camouflaged.

NORTH MIDDLE SCHOOL Olympic Spirit Hits Harrisburg North Middle School TAMMY HOFER

A

s we say good-bye to the 2014 Sochi Olympics, the Harrisburg North Middle School Staff have a lot to be proud of!!! Over the course of 3 weeks, the staff met and exceeded the health and fitness challenges that were bestowed upon them by the PE department and the administration. During Week 1, the staff was asked to drink at least 64 oz of water each day. The second weeks challenge consisted of working out 5 of the 7 days, for 30-45 minutes. The last week the staff was challenged to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night and to eat 3-5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. As the weeks challenges were met, staff members’ names were put into drawings for weekly prizes. On the final day of the Olympic Challenge, Mr. Haag and Mrs. T. Hofer held a closing ceremony, with all staff and students present, announcing the Gold, Silver, and Bronze medalists. Congratulations to the Gold Medal winner, Trista Thomas, the Silver Medal was awarded to Amanda Olinger, and the Bronze Medal went to Tammy Hofer. Overall, the staff did an awesome job of participating in the Olympic Challenges!

n another note, the staff is currently working on logging the number of miles they put in each week as well as the number of minutes they workout each week. As a staff we are trying to log 1, 922 miles. If we hit that number, we would be arriving in Key Largo, Florida! After this never ending winter, who wouldn’t want to be there? As of the beginning of March, we are over half way there! Way to go North Middle School Staff Members, here is to a happier and healthier you!!

Shelby Specht Named 2014 Prudential Spirit Of Community Distinguished Finalist

S

helby Specht, 13, of Sioux Falls, S.D., a seventh-grader at Harrisburg North Middle School, raised $750 to support the Children’s Miracle Network by selling homemade candy bouquets through her “Kandy for Kids” program. Shelby chose to create a project to support the network because her brother required life-saving equipment provided by the organization following a surgery. Shelby also has qualified for the President’s Volunteer Service Award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country. Shelby was presented with an engraved bronze Distinguished Finalist medallion during a ceremony at Harrisburg North Middle School.

he Prudential Spirit of Community Award represents the United States’ largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer service.

All public and private middle level and high schools in the country, as well as all Girl Scout councils, county 4-H organizations, American Red Cross chapters, YMCAs and HandsOn Network affiliates, were eligible to select a student or member for a local Prudential Spirit of Community Award. These Local Honorees were then reviewed by an independent judging panel, which selected State Honorees and Distinguished Finalists based on criteria including personal initiative, effort, impact and personal growth.

ince the program began in 1995, more than 100,00 young volunteers have been honored at the local, sate and national level. The program also is conducted by Prudential subsidiaries in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Ireland, India and China. In addition to granting its own awards, The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program also distributes President’s Volunteer Service Awards to qualifying Local Honorees on behalf of President Barack Obama.

HNMS 7th Grade Happenings SEVENTH GRADE TEAM

S

pring is in the air. Students are excited. Teachers are excited. The end of school is near. We, the HNMS seventh-grade team, thought that it would be a good idea to tell you about items that your student has been doing in class, but also projects that coming later in the school year for them.

O

ur seventh-graders have seen a lot of action in PE in the recent weeks.

Following our Winter Olympic unit, we dove right in to strength and agility training. This involved the use of weights, mini-hurdles, and plyometric boxes. Students were able to engage in various exercises working different muscles and developing some speed. Knowing where major muscles are located, and what exercises help those specific muscles were a point of emphasis. We are currently in the early stages of an archery unit.

This gives many students their first chance to fire a bow and arrow. While we may not hit the bull’s-eye every time, we are learning to try new things and encourage those on our teams.

I

n General Math 7, the students have been using formulas to calculate Area, Surface Area and Volume. Your child needs to continue to bring their own calculator to class, so replenish necessary materials if needed. It does not need to be scientific, but a basic calculator will be sufficient. Students will begin to move into statistics and wrap up the unit after Smarter Balance Testing.

LA students have just begun working on their fourth quarter independent reading challenge in which students will be setting their own individual goal for how many pages that they want to read this fourth quarter. For every fifty pages that is read, students names are entered into a drawing for a prize; that prize is the opportunity to pie either Mr. Hartzler or Mrs. Andrews in the face in front of all of their classmates. We are excited about the opportunity to see how our students push themselves to accomplish their goal. The students have also been wrapping up some major papers in class, and they were some of the best of the year. We would encourage you to ask your child about them.

ight now seventh-grade advanced science is doing a chemistry and physics unit. The students are currently creating a superhero based upon a specific element. This unit will also include activities on force and motion as well as electricity. At the end of the year the students build Rube Goldberg machines as their final assessment

eneral Life Science students are learning about the human body.

We have dissected owl pellets, learned the muscles and bones of the body, and will continue working through the body. We will finish our human body study with a frog dissection and then will move on to Botany, the study of plants, and we will finish the year with the study of ecology.

The students have the last half of their ABC books due on April 30th--with bonus points for handing in early.

Spring Has Sprung In Eighth-Grade AMANDA OLINGER

A

s the fourth-quarter begins, we eighth-grade teachers are very enthusiastic about finishing the year on a strong note. In Mrs. Hofer’s physical education class, students are working on their archery skills, and, once the weather brightens and warms, they will start a track and field unit hopefully outside on our fantastic track. Mr. Savage is ready to explore the mysteries of the universe as they will begin a “Space” unit after Dakota Step testing. He, also, is hoping to take advantage of the nice weather coming our way during his weather unit. English Language Arts is midway through a Holocaust unit, and will be ending the year with a “Humor in Literature” which we hope is as fun as it is educational. It explores how writers and authors use literary devices and writing techniques to create humor in their texts. Mrs. Huffman and Mr. Homan are beginning the Civil War unit which entails so many speakers and activities, including gazing at the stars in the star lab. In Math classes Mrs. Hofer and Mrs. Sheets are excited to utilize some of their more hands on activities with the spring air, and also Mrs. Sheets’ Algebra and Geometry are preparing for their End of Course exams. Just like you, we teachers love the change of the seasons, but this spring is especially welcome after such a cold winter. It is awesome to be here and watch as the students are transitioning into the spring activities, and experience the excitement of transitioning to High School as it is becoming a reality with each passing day.

6th Grade SMS Students Study Civil Rights Movement BRENDA JONES

I

n February the 6th grade ELA classes celebrated Black History Month with a study of the Civil Rights Movement. To introduce the unit, students viewed A Time for Justice, a documentary rich with historical footage and voice-overs of the many participants who fought for equal rights. Firsthand accounts of some of the most dramatic moments of the time were captured - the bus boycott in Montgomery, the school crisis in Arkansas, and the continual violence in Birmingham all culminating to the triumphant march in 1965 for equal voting rights.

T

he highlight of our study was an oral reading of The Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis. A humorous and often touching story, Watsons portrays life for one African American family during this tumultuous time in history. Our students loved bringing this family to life by using voices that reflected the period and dialect of the South. Plus, they connected to themes that ring true today: the importance of family bonds and the need to treat others equally. Ask your student what was their favorite or most memorable part to the story.

8th Grade Happenings 8TH GRADE TEAM

O

n March 12th the 8th grade girls went to the Women in Science Conference at Southeast Technical Institute in Sioux Falls. This event promoted careers in science, technology, engineering and math. The young women participated in presentations by local women in various science-related careers. They also had the chance to browse through an exhibit area and participate in related hands-on activities.

O

n April 9th we will take the 8th grade boys to Camp Med. Like Women in Science, Camp Med is also held at Southeast Technical Institute in Sioux Falls. This opportunity allows young men the chance to learn more about exciting careers in the medical field. They will rotate in small groups between career focuses. They will get up-close and personal experience with various medical devices, participate in hands-on activities and talk with medical professionals.

ENDEAVOR ELEMENTARY Talent At Endeavor…. Everything From Pogo Sticks To The Harp!!

O

n March 6th Endeavor opened the doors for the first annual Endeavor Talent Show Extravaganza. The performances that were presented would have made Simon Cowell stand up and cheer. Many audience members had tears in their eyes as songs from the hit shows Frozen and Annie were song by our talented singers. They rocked out with two guitarists and were soothed by the magnificent sound of the harp. Other instrumental performances came from the Piano and trumpet as well as a rendition of Avicii’s, Wake Me Up performed by the Harrisburg Endeavor staff, arranged by Tim Stockman, Endeavor’s Music teacher. Total for the night over 20 acts performed. Other acts included various oral interp, tumbling/dance routines, karate, a pogo stick routine and other entertaining performances.

4th Grade JUSTIN FREDERIKSEN

T

he fourth graders at Endeavor had some very special guests come for a visit. The idea came after a story that they students read in their Journey’s reading book, “The Right Dog for the Job” written by Dorothy Hinshaw Patent. The story gave students an insight of the many roles service dogs have in and around the community. While the students read the story they were able to understand the many advantages of having a service dog.

ally Marum with her Australian Shepherd named Gem, and Cindy Bailey with her Border Collie named Shep came to visit the students. The dogs are TDI certified and make many visits around the community. The fourth graders had numerous questions to ask but there was one question in particular that many of the students had. Luckily our two visitors and their handlers were able to answer the question with ease. The big question was, “What is the difference between a service dog and a therapy dog?”

T

he dogs and their handlers definitely fulfilled their mission of bringing joy and smiles to all of the students. We were honored to have them be visitors in our classroom and hope to get Tail Waggin Tutors started here at Endeavor.

uidance addresses the academic, career, and personal/social areas of a student’s life. Recently, we have been discussing individual differences. We focus on celebrating our differences! We often talk about how boring the world would be if we were all the same. 4th and 5th grade did a fantastic job this past week by taking the pledge to «Spread the Word to End the R word». Students discussed what it would be like to have an intellectual or developmental disability. They also signed their names on a big poster in the lunchroom to signify their pledge to end the use of the «R word». As a school counselor I am constantly blown away by the encouragement students show one another here at Explorer!

Music Classes MRS. HELEN SHORT

usic students are busy creating rhythms, ostinatos, reading from the treble staff, and exploring instrument timbres. Students were busy last month with their performances of “Seussical, the Musical”, “Hoedown”, and “Jungle Beat” - First grade students will sing their hearts out in “Puppy Love” on April 8th. Fourth grade students are eager to travel to the National Museum of Music in Vermillion at the end of April. Kindergarten students will perform their Spring Sing on May 7th at 2:30 pm in the Explorer gym.

E

xplorer’s after school clubs are coming to a close. D.R.R.U.M. Club and Extraordinaire had a successful year with a record number of 74 students participating. They kept busy performing in school, at neighborhood retirement centers, at a Sioux Falls Skyforce game, and for the annual Talent Show. Keep the music rolling!

Explorer Elementary PE MRS. RONETTE COSTAIN

We are in the home stretch for this 2013-14 school year! Walking club will conclude at the end of April and we will celebrate with our annual Walk-AThon. This will be a fundraiser where we walk for a half hour. Students will earn money for our PTO by collecting pledges for the Walk-A-Thon. This year we are earning money to re-stock the reading library.

Our end of the year FUN day will be a celebration with our friends by doing different activities on what we refer to as Field Day! K-3 will be playing games with their friends on the afternoon of May 9th. The 4-5th Grades are going to try something new this year by going over to the North Middle School Track for a half day of Track and Field Activities! The kids are excited to try this and a fun day will be had by all, competing and spending time with our classmates and friends. A schedule of times and places will be sent out in the Tiger Tuesday as we get closer to this event!

The PTO has been very generous this year. Over 100 new library books were purchased from Walk-a-thon funds. PTO also purchased frames to display student artwork on our walls. The students have been excited to see their projects displayed and we have had many compliments from staff and parents about how good the posters look. Explorer had a school wide DEAR (drop everything and read) time on Monday March 3 to recognize Dr. Seuss’ birthday and dress up days all week, including a school wide pajama day on Wednesday.

Students also received ‘brag tags’ for participating in Read Across America week.

On Saturday April 12 we will combine all 5th grade bands and play for the Spring Showcase at the High School. Which is a fundraiser for the music boosters. am very proud of all these students and I am anxious to show you the progress we have made this year. Each student will also be performing a solo at the Harrisburg Solo and Ensemble Contest on Thursday May 8 and Friday May 9 at South Middle School. Each student will be scheduled for a 5 minute time slot on either Thursday or Friday evening to perform their solo for a judge and the judge will give comments and a rating for each student that night.

Art Classes MISS JANNA MOES

As the 2013-2014 school year is coming to a close, the art classes have been busy working on our last few projects of the year. Many grades are beginning to explore the process of clay sculpture. The students are very excited about the creation of their clay projects. To be on display soon, the 4th grade art classes have begun a tradition of recreate book covers to be displayed in the library. Students first pick out one of their favorite illustrated book covers and then begin to draw out the cover design using a grid system to draw. The book covers will be displayed in the library for all of their 5th grade year and returned at the end of the 2014-2015 school year. As this is my first year teaching here at Explorer, I have been very pleased and excited about all of the creative and beautiful artwork our students have created. I look forward to what wonderful artwork will be created in the 2014-2015 school year.

Computer Classes MR. TRAVIS LAPE

Explorer Tech has been doing some great projects with augmented reality inside the classrooms. 1st graders have been working hard to create math story problems using AR. The 3rd graders at Explorer Elementary have been learning about local government. Each student brought a plain white t-shirt in and designed a shirt for a department that the city is in charge of. They then recorded themselves talking about the department and what it does for the city. The video was then tied to the T-shirt design so that students could scan the front of the shirts and bring them to life through the Aurasma app. The 5th grade class is going on the Oregon Trail through a simulation using augmented reality paired with as blogging. Teachers at Explorer are taking on the challenge to bring tech to the classroom and no longer something that just happens in the computer lab.

FREEDOM ELEMENTARY Community Service Gracie

B

y definition, to volunteer is to freely offer to do something. To volunteer, you can do community service. So what we should do is community service so we can help! There are lots of reasons why we should do community service at schools. ur community should help out on something or someone who needs it. Don’t you think that knowing you are helping something or someone would make you feel good? Not doing community service, would be like a dog not excited to see his family come back home.

Also, helping out would make you proud. For example, helping will make smiles on everyone’s face, and you would be happy. Just being out there helping, would be great and it is nice to help out and not just sitting around not caring.

People would be happy that you are trying to help. It is a good thing to do. If you help, it could change how you think of things or look at them.

You could even learn a lesson by helping and doing a community service. Community service could make friends bound more together, and work together as a team. I’ve read a lot of books about community service. They all give real good reasons why you should do it and what you can do to help. e should do community service to help out. Everyone will want to do it again. It would be a great experience and everyone could learn something from it.

By definition physical activity is any bodily activity that enhances or maintains physical fitness and overall health and wellness that means we want one hour of recess every single day for the whole entire school. t would be good to have one hour of recess because when the kids come back from one of recess they would be ready to learn even more because they are in good shape. Also, they would listen better and be more respectful to the teachers. Plus, in other schools I know they have fifteen minutes at ten O’clock and forty-five minutes after lunch, that equals one hour! In fact in middle school we aren’t going to have any recess so we should have enough in 5th grade so we have memories of how awesome are teachers were, having one hour of recess would be like going to school and not doing school work or home work and getting all “ As “. lmost every student that I know loves recess! Our playground at Freedom Elementary has several areas to play on. There are two different playground areas that include climbing equipment monkey bars, and slides. The other area is a large black top area that has a basketball court with hoops at each end. What is missing from our playground is a “green area” where kids can play football. green area next to the basketball court is perfect. By green I mean a grass area that is softer and safer than the”blacktop.” This is for kids that like to play touch football. Right now touch football is played on the basketball court, which is painful to fall on. So I say, “Lets soften things up and prevent injuries. suggest that we first identify an area that can be used for football. Then it would be best for student to brainstorm about the seasonal use of the area. The need for extra supervision should also be considered. Finally the idea should be presented to the Principal Mrs. Pederson for her approval. Lets make recess “green.”

ids these days don't want to do homework in textbooks they would rather it using technology. By definition educational technology facilitates learning and improving performance by creating using and meaning appropriate technology process and resources. And if they used laptops they would get more work done then in books all day long. nd if we took laptops home and finish homework faster and without any whining.

You can also finish math at school and the research part at home with the laptops.. And you can find more details on the computer than in the book. Not taking laptops home would be a Christmas without any presents. They are more respectful to the teachers by using technology. lso, then they are more responsible in middle school. Next, it would make a better working environment to work in. As you can see technology and education is very important.

ids need recess during middle school. Kids love recess, and I think they should have it until High School. Websites and papers like Scholastic, New York Times, Scholarpedia, and even more show that recess helps kids learn better.

By definition, physical activity is physical exercise that enhances the health and wellness of a person. I think kids need more physical activity than just gym, therefor; we should have recess in Middle School. f kids were to have recess in Middle School, it would not only benefit them, but it would teach them. I love recess, and all of my friends love recess, too, and I know we would all miss our favorite thing, recess. That’s why we need to

I know that for me, fresh helps me rid head and stomach aches. A day without recess is like a Halloween without candy to us kids. We love recess, and I know us kids would enjoy to not only have it in Elementary School, but also in Middle School. Kids really the physical activity to stay healthy and maintain a happy life style. hat’s why I think we need Middle School recess. Not only do kids just love recess in general, but recent studies from websites like Scholastic, New York Times, Journal to Play, BaltimoreSun, Slate.com, Scholarpedia and way more show that recess actually benefits us kids.

For example, Scholastic says that kids need recess to socialize with others, burn of some energy, and just let loose and have fun. New York Times says that kids use recess to be themselves.

To have fun and do what they want. That is why we need recess in not only Elementary School, but also in Middle School.

It also prepares kids for middle school sports.

Also, it keeps kids healthy and active through the school year. It benefits parents by letting them see their kids play during school and not have to wait till summer. In elementary physical education (P.E) it teaches kids discipline and it keeps them in shape. It also prepares them for middle school sports. lso, it keeps kids active and healthy. And, it benefits the parents sports. Parents don’t have to pay 100 and + dollars for 6 months of practice and 3 months of games. In addition having elementary sports would educate kids by teaching kids how to work as a team and have great sportsmanship eaches kids in order to succeed you need to go out of your comfort zone. And it teaches them to work hard. As you can see elementary sports will benefit everyone except Harrisburg's wallet.

ur school has been thinking about gathering students and parents to go and help clean up our community. First all of us get to go to South Dakota and clean a park there and we might go to another place to clean or we just might go back. Second of all think it’s a great idea. Third of all we do so know that some parents and students might not come.

his trip is a great way to teach kids about their community and they’ll learn not to litter anymore. It might also help kids stay clean. It is a great way that if some students are learning about it they might get farther in that unit. It’s like a dirty community without cleaning. After our trip we will all go to Freedom Elementary Park and we will clean the wrappers there and we will clean up the sewers. A reason why you should do this because it will keep our whole world clean. think some people should start caring about littering. That is why you should help volunteer clean and come on our trip to South Dakota and Freedom Elementary.

JOURNEY ELEMENTARY Let The Games Begin!

housands of miles away from Sochi, the spirit of the 2014 Olympics spirit is alive and well at Journey Elementary! Timed to coincide with the start date of the Winter Olympics, over 450 students participated in a collaborative multi-disciplinary unit designed by specials teachers Miss Van Scoyk, Mrs. Hansen, and Ms. Childs. The teachers immersed students of each grade level in exciting standards-based learning activities and experiences within their music, gym, and art classes according to their assigned countries. Six of the previous top medal-winning countries, excepting the USA and Russia, were represented; Canada, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Finland, and China. The classroom grade-level teachers worked with their students in creating their country’s flag.

n Miss Van Scoyk’s music classes, some of the lessons involved students in composing their own original Olympic theme, and also learning about the composer Edvard Grieg – Peer Gynt, and Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel Opera. The students especially enjoyed learning Chinese, French Canadian, and Finnish dances which they then performed during the Olympic opening ceremony assembly.

uring their physical education classes, Mrs. Hansen’s lesson goals included creating interest in other cultures, fitness and participation, and demonstrating good sportsmanship. Student athletes “competed” in the hockey, snowboarding, bobsledding, biathlon, curling, figure skating, ski jumping, and speed skating “events”. The students were also able to view an updated display featuring the updated number of gold, silver, and bronze medals that each country earned.

sing a variety of mediums, materials, tools, and techniques, Ms. Childs’ art students learned about the roles and styles of art in each culture represented. The student artists created coats of arms shields, Viking ships, Chinese lanterns and dragons, Bavarian nutcrackers, Black Forest cuckoo clocks, winter game figure drawings, and dala horses, which were later display along the hallway walls.

he unit culminated with students participating in an all-school assembly which modeled after the Olympic opening ceremonies, featured much fanfare and festivity, patriotism and parading; complete with the running of the torch, Chinese lantern and dragon dancers performing to percussion, French Canadian and Finnish dancers, the singing of our National Anthem, along with individual students explaining the tradition of the ceremonial releasing of the doves, the meaning of the colored Olympic rings, and reading the Olympic Oath. Let the Games begin!

LIBERTY ELEMENTARY Measurement Fair

he 4th graders at Liberty Elementary enjoyed exploring various forms of Measurement at the 3rd annual Measurement Fair. The students rotated through several hands on, stations and learned about different units of measurement and the various tools used to measure things.

hese stations included Using scales to Measure, Customary Units of Measure, Measuring temperature with Thermometers, Fractions, Area, Perimeter and Time.

Many of these lessons are not learned in a classroom, but on a soccer field, on a volleyball cour t, on a wrestling mat or jumping a hurdle. Some life lessons are learned in a musical or dramatic performance or a debate competition. We can make an impact in these life lessons!

To continue your booster club's ability to provide funds to extra curricular activities at Harrisburg High School, Tiger Nation is pushing a large fundraising drive. We are printing a program for the September 6th Tiger Bowl football game as well as a Holiday Guide for the December Prairie Christmas program.

Tiger Nation members and volunteers will be canvassing area businesses asking to purchase advertising space in both or one of the above printed programs. Your support or interest in this drive would be greatly appreciated, please contact any of our Tiger Nation board members.

The Tiger Nation Board is always looking for new members, more voices and opinions on how to better this organization.

Please contact any of us if you have any interest and please attend our monthly meetings, third Wednesday of each month, 7pm, high `school library, the board's meeting follows promptly at 8pm.

Funds Distribution The monies generated last year which Tiger Nation designates to our extra curricular activities will be divvied up at our April Tiger Nation meeting, Wednesday, April 16th, 7pm in the high school library. Directors, coaches, advisors of the extra curricular activities at Harrisburg High School wishing to request funds will make a short presentation at this meeting.

Following those requests, the members in attendance will vote on the distribution. Each monthly meeting a parent attends and/or volunteer opportunities taken and marked for your student's extra curricular activity, leads to more dollars towards that activity. See you on April 16th.
