SATURDAY, MAY 3, 2014 Gates open 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Dumpsters will be located at 801 S Prairie Street - Harrisburg City Maintenance Facility.

Volunteers will be on hand to help load material into the dumpsters. All rubble will be accepted on May 3, 2014 with the following exceptions: No toxic waste containers or paint containers, no recyclables, No tires off rims, no TV’s or monitors, No hazardous materials.

Harrisburg Community Library The Harrisburg Community Library is located at 200 E Willow Street, entrance on the southeast side of the Harrisburg Liberty Elementary School building. The Harrisburg Community Library will once again be offering a summer reading program for local children aged preschool through 8th grade.

Summer Library Hours – Monday thru Thursday - 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Friday and Saturday – 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

2014 Construction Projects The Columbia Basin Sanitary Sewer and Storm Water Improvement project is currently underway. This project will provide improvements to the sanitary sewer system along Columbia Street as well as improving the drainage west of Liberty Elementary School, along Columbia Street and Emmett Trail. Street detours and limited driveway access during construction of underground utilities and pavement will occur. Harrisburg City Day Care Registration Regulations The City of Harrisburg has recently adopted Day Care Registration Regulations. All existing Day Cares should register with the City of Harrisburg by October 1st, 2014. Lawn And Garden Irrigation Studies estimate that almost half of the water used in an average American household is for outdoor irrigation. Water wisely. Don’t bother watering after 10 AM or before 7 PM as the heat of the day will just dry out what you have applied, not to mention that it isn’t good for the grass or your plants. Try not to water on days when the wind is blowing. The wind negates any benefits of lawn watering.

Harrisburg Residents

Lawns and gardens typically only require an inch of water per week. A thorough soaking which penetrates the soil is better than several short watering intervals which merely water the top of the ground. Watering the top of the soil is actually detrimental to the growth of your lawn. If can encourage unwanted disease and weed growth.

If you haven’t installed a rain sensor for your irrigation system, do so. The cost of a sensor is about $50.00. You can recoup this cost rather quickly if your irrigation system comes on during a rain storm once or twice. Any excess water that your irrigation system applies during a rain event will simply run off your yard and down the gutter.

Sump Pumps It is against city regulations to run your sump hose water into the sewer system. Sump pump hoses need to be run outside towards the curb if at all possible. The city may conduct random inspections to insure that this policy is enforced.

Harrisburg Water Restrictions City of Harrisburg Water Restrictions are in effect year round. Watering restrictions apply to the sprinkling, watering, or irrigating of lawns. Trees, shrubs, flower and vegetable gardens may be watered as needed.

These restrictions are strictly enforced and failure to abide by them will result in up to a $200.00 fine.

Currently we are at a Level 2 Restriction which limits watering or irrigating of yards to 2 days per week using the last digit of your physical address. Water use shall occur before 10:00 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m.

Tips For Attending Graduation Receptions

here are many do’s and don’ts when it comes to attending graduation receptions. If you receive an actual graduation reception invitation, then you should definitely attend the reception. Receiving reception invitations over Facebook is a completely different story. Whether you choose to attend the party or not is up to you. When you think of graduation receptions, you think of three things: the outfit you are going to wear, the food that will be at the reception, and the perfect gift to give. First, do not overdress - you never know what types of activities are planned for the graduation reception. Also, don’t try to look better than the grad hosting the party, so be cute but casual. For girls, wear a simple summer dress or maybe just jeans and a cute shirt. For guys, it’s acceptable to wear jeans and a nice shirt. Now, the food. At every graduation party there will more than likely be a TON of food.

That doesn’t mean you need to eat all of it. Eat in moderation, and keep in mind that you probably have other receptions to visit that day. Bringing a gift or not, or what to even give as a gift, is always one of the hardest things to decide on. You don’t want to spend too much, but you don’t want to spend too little. You also don’t know if they already have what you want to give them. Giving money is the easiest route to go. With college right around the corner, the grads will need money for tuition and books. Remember to dress cute but casual, don’t eat everything in sight, and give the perfect gift.

It’ll all be over before we know it. Graduation symbolizes the ending of the prologue in our books of life, and the rest after that is up to us to write the next chapters. Some have chosen to go to college, others have joined the armed forces, some are deciding to work right after graduating, but no matter where our life takes us, we will succeed. We were given the best to shape us into the best. We are no longer individual students at a school. We are a part of something bigger than that. We are the graduating class of 2014! We are Tigers!

arrisburg seniors Hailey Halling and Austin Bicknase recently signed with two well-known colleges to continue their basketball careers at the next level. Halling, former forward/center for the Tigers, will be heading to Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, and Bicknase, former guard for the Tigers, will be attending Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota.

long with playing her beloved sport, Hailey plans to major in pre-physical therapy. She’s looking forward to attending college and getting involved in the basketball program, which is why she knew Northwestern was where she wanted to go. “It seemed like the team resembled the Harrisburg team I have been a part of for the past 5 years,” Halling states. Hailey has worked hard to be in the position she is in and is grateful to have the help and support she has been given over the years.

A

ustin is “undecided” on what he’s looking for from DWU academically. However, there’s no doubt that he plans to play ball to his fullest ability throughout the next four years. With the hard work and dedication Bicknase has shown throughout his high school career, he feels nothing but blessed and thankful for everyone that has supported him through it all. Improvement was a big thing that Austin continually worked hard to achieve. He is excited to keep moving forward with his basketball career and to keep improving along the way. “For younger basketball players who want to play college basketball, all I have to say is don’t give up on your dream, and you have to work hard or you have almost no chance.”

e have high hopes for these two former HHS basketball players, and we know they won’t let us down. They have both worked hard over the years and have earned the opportunity to continue to play ball at the college level. Our best wishes go out to these players and we hope that they know that even though they’re playing for another team now, Harrisburg will always be here supporting them.

What We Really Learned

s the class of 2014 prepares to finish a chapter of their lives and begin a new one, it is important for them to take what they’ve learned in high school and apply it to life. Not everyone will need to know the Pythagorean Theorem, how to write a lyrical ballad, or the proper way to serve a tennis ball. What they will need to know are the life lessons and skills they’ve learned throughout their high school career. “The most important thing I learned in high school was to appreciate what you have.

A lot of times we take what we have for granted and forget how blessed we really are. I’ve seen a lot of accomplishments in high school, but I’ve also seen a lot of tragedies. It really makes you think about everything from a different perspective,” says senior Alex Johnson. “Be yourself,” senior Christian Trainor adds. “Don’t worry about what other people say and don’t let their negativity get to you,” senior Adam Holmstrom adds on.

“You only have four years to spend some of the best times of your life with the friends you’ve come to know over the years,” Trainor says, finishing it off. High school seniors want to focus on living in the moment, while some teachers would like to prepare them for the future. “Something the students should take with them is the ability to have adult conversations,” teacher and coach Brandon White states. “It’s only going to help you with interviews, issues with your boss later in life, and any other conflicts you come across.” While both may be true, the important thing is to learn more from high school than just what is taught in a classroom on a smart board. Although academics are extremely important, it is just as important to take real-world skills from high school while the resources are available and to realize what you have is a privilege, not a right. Live in the moment as you plan for the future. In the words of Brandon White, “Gosh dang it, guys, just go out and have some fun!”

he Class of 2014. The class who has made memories and friendships that will last a lifetime, and even though the only way we can win the Tiger Olympics is by cheating, we have sure left a mark on Harrisburg athletics. With our team spirit on an all-time high throughout the years, we have made up some of the biggest student sections in the state. From the bonfires, to the pool parties, to the grill outs, and even the raids on the senior campouts, our class has done it all. As with our school, our class has also evolved. Back in freshmen year, when there weren’t rules on dancing, everything was exciting to us - the dances, the homecoming activities, and the football games. Then sophomore year rolled around, and being non-existent to the upper classmen, we started to figure out who our friends were. This was also right around the time bringing your own lunch became a new trend. When junior year started, we were finally able to go to prom and call ourselves upperclassmen. As juniors, we were even allowed to sit in the front row of student sections. Now it is senior year, the top of the food chain, and emotions are unpredictable. There is excitement and fear about starting a new chapter in our lives. Then there is sadness about leaving behind the friends we have known forever and shared so many experiences with. I think everyone else would have to agree, though, our class has grown a lot closer this year more than ever. We’ve started to realize that these are some of the last moments together in Harrisburg and we want to leave a mark. There couldn’t be a greater class to graduate with than Harrisburg’s class of 2014.

ollege is just around the corner for many of us. It’s a stressful, yet exciting, experience for anyone. Because college is an investment you make for your future, the amount of time you spend preparing for college can lead to many great opportunities that will benefit you in the future. It is never too late to prepare for college, especially for you juniors and seniors.

One of the first tips for preparing for college is to apply for financial aid early. The earlier, the better and it is important because it will determine how much aid you will receive for one school year. Second, apply for as many scholarships as you can! Don’t ignore the chance to get free money because, trust me, you will regret it. Third, if you plan to live on campus, make sure you reserve a room early. It goes first come, first serve, so the sooner the better. Fourth, work some type of summer job. College is expensive, so having some spare change can really help you. Did I mention that you have books to buy, supplies to buy, and food and other items that you will need? Last, but certainly not least, visit the campus and the town before move-in day. Not knowing your school and dorm can cause a lot of stress on move-in day. This way, you’ll have an idea where you are going, and you’ll know where to go when you get there. These are just a few of the many tips there are for preparing for college, but I hope you took these tips to heart because they will help you. Make your college years worthwhile!

Advice To Underclassmen TIARA UGOFSKY

M

y time at Harrisburg High School has been unforgettable. I have made many memories that I will never forget - from cheering at the football games to winning a state championship. Looking back, there are some things that I wish I had done differently. The first piece of advice I would give to the underclassmen is to get involved. I loved being involved in all the different activities because it allowed me to meet people that I might not have met otherwise. I was involved in student council, choir, basketball, national honor society, HOSA, and I even participated in track my freshman year. It may seem like a lot, but I wish I had done even more.

I will admit that at times it was stressful, but it was definitely worth all the memories.

he second piece of advice is that grades are important in high school, but your whole life doesn’t have to revolve around them - high school

is about having fun, too. You don’t have to do homework or study ALL the time. I’m not saying you should forget your schoolwork all together, but learn to balance between homework and having fun. Go to the sports games or hang out with friends. Don’t over stress about getting good grades all the time because at the end of the day that is just as bad as not studying. Learning to balance the two will help make your time in high school much more enjoyable.

T

he final piece of advice is to go on college visits and to look into at the beginning of your senior year, if not sooner. This will help you narrow down what you want in a college, and it gives you time to see the various options. It will be helpful at the end of your senior year if you already have a college picked out so you have one less thing to worry about. This is my personal advice, but at the end of the day, everyone’s high school experience is different and entirely what you want to make it.

Leap High FATIMA SESAY

A

t Harrisburg High School there are many resources for learning that are available to us each and everyday. There are teachers, tutors, and of course students. On one of the far ends of the school there is an area of the school known as Leap High. It consists of two rooms across from each other with students ready to learn and teachers ready to help.

Just like any other classroom, there are enough desks available as well as more comfortable leather rocking chairs. Because there are less than 30 students that are apart of the program, it makes it much easier to focus.

This program is for students who have struggled with many difficulties throughout school or are not currently doing as well as they could. From the start of school to the end of the day, students are constantly working.

he difference between this program and normal school is not very much.

In a standard classroom we engage in projects and class participation.

In Leap High we have worksheets and assignments that we complete as fast as we can at our own pace without the projects. Other than that, it is a pretty relaxed environment. Each student also has a personal schedule with daily assignments that he/she must complete. Our assignments are graded, and depending on how far we are, we are put in levels (1, 2, or 3). With each level we get certain benefits, but level one is the best.

Our main goal is to reach the ‘Independent’ level, which is above level one, allowing us to come & leave school on a more flexible schedule, as well as leave school to get lunch. We can only gain these privileges by completing as much work as we can and by being serious about what we’re doing. In conclusion, I’m happy to say that I’m part of Leap High.

It has helped me pass most of my classes and has gotten me closer to graduating.

Harrisburg FFA Competes In State Leadership CDE’s

n December 8th & 9th, 18 members of the Harrisburg FFA, along with Advisor Todd Marks and Assistant Advisor Mrs. Jackie Bogue, traveled to Pierre to compete in the 2013 State FFA Leadership CDE’s. To qualify for the state event, members must place in the top three at their district competition. Harrisburg was well represented by students of all grades and the members did an excellent job.

he Junior Parliamentary Procedure Team consisting of freshmen Grace Aasheim, Alysen Voss, Nicole Hudson, Hanna Lane, Ashlynne Beninga, Connor McAllister, Alexander Auch and McKenzye Gunderson placed 4th out of the 15 teams competing.

he FFA members participating represented Harrisburg very well through excellent sportsmanship and professionalism. The trip also had some fun activities as the group enjoyed supper at Pizza Ranch, swimming at the Ramkota and a trip to the State Capital Building to view the beautiful Christmas trees on display. The members also want to thank Mrs. Stephanie Bowen for accompanying them on the trip and for all of her support and assistance.

n n additional FFA note, the FFA would like to thank everyone who supported our recent fruit and cheese sales fundraiser. 1900 items were sold and the chapter earned record profits that will be used to assist the chapter in travel, competitive events and to be given back to the Harrisburg community thorough community service projects. The ACT Test

The Future Of The Medical Field

H

arrisburg has been host to ACT testing, most recently on April 12th, with nearly one hundred fifty students coming at eight in the morning to take a test that, for many, can decide their future.

A

ccording to ACT, Inc., “the ACT assessment measures high school students’ general educational development and their capability to complete college-level work with the multiple choice tests covering four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science. The optional Writing Test measures skill in planning and writing a short essay.” According to a research study conducted by ACT, Inc., in 2003, a positive relationship was found between a student’s ACT composite score and the possibility of he or she earning a college degree.”

I

n addition, ACT, Inc. states that, “Most colleges use ACT scores as only one factor in their admission process. A sampling of ACT admissions scores shows that the 75th percentile composite score was 24.1 at public four-year institutions and 25.3 at private four-year institutions. It is recommended that students check with their prospective institutions directly to understand ACT admissions requirements.”

T

hat is sound advice because you never know when the ACT will be a minimal help or when it will decide your entrance to your college of choice. Furthermore, a better ACT score can result in an increased amount of scholarship money. Suffice to say, a good ACT score is worth the money.

Fifty-eight HOSA members participated in the State Leadership Conference on April 3rd and 4th in Sioux Falls.

O

n April 3rd and 4th at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, Harrisburg’s HOSA chapter competed in the 2014 South Dakota State Leadership Conference. HOSA is a medical club at the high school that stands for Health Occupations Students of America. At state HOSA, students can compete in an individual or team event. These events are health related and can range from biotechnology to clinical specialty to a HOSA bowl team. Students have to prepare many months in advance to perfect their knowledge and skills of their event. For some events, participants have to take one test a month before state to see if they can qualify for their event.

If they pass the test, then they are eligible to compete at state. Everyone that took a test from Harrisburg qualified to go to state.

Harrisburg Hosts Track Meet TRACI HEIBERGER

T

he Harrisburg Tigers hosted their first track meet of the year on Tuesday, April 8th. There were four high schools that came to Harrisburg to participate in this event, and those were Sioux Falls Lincoln, Lennox, Tea, and Chester. The Tigers made several high placements including junior, Haley Bruggeman getting first in both the 100 M. hurdles and the 300 M. hurdles, eighth grader, Jasmyne Cooper taking first in the 1600 M. run, and eighth grader, Sydney Halling receiving first in the 200 M. dash. In addition to that, Jasmyne Cooper, Sydney Halling, Sarah Westerman, Haley Bruggeman, and Darian Poelstra qualified provisionally for the state meet. When asked about the team, head coach, Kevin Kroger explained, “The kids have been working hard in practice and it has shown in their performances at the first meet.” He says that they’re looking forward to continued improvement and a good season.

Explorer Happenings 5th graders here at Explorer have been learning about the Oregon Trail in Social Studies. We had live simulations of what real pioneers would have experienced on their journey west. Students learned about what was happening through videos and augmented reality. Students blogged about the journey, and in a culminating letter home, students shared their journey to family members they left behind. Mr. Lape and Miss Erickson have been impressed with the engagement and quality of work students have shown.

Students have been taking the state assessments this month. 5th graders are required to take the standard Dakota Step bubble assessment for Science.

3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are taking the NEW Smarter Balanced Online Assessment Field Test in Math and English-Language Arts. Students and teachers have been learning a lot about the assessments so we will be ready in the future years.

JOURNEY Our Solar System And Beyond JASON LARSON

T

he students of 4L at Journey Elementary just finished studying our Solar System, the Milky Way Galaxy, and the Universe. We learned many interesting facts about the planets through our Planet Research Packets. We discovered awesome things about our own Sun and how it compares with other stars throughout the universe. Nolan Vaughan said he didn’t know, “That some smaller stars can be warmer than bigger stars.” You can see in the photograph just how huge the sun is in relation to the planets. When asked what his favorite part of the unit was, Vaughan again explained, “Making a Solar System Model outside using flags to mark how far the planets are from the sun.” Of course, in order to do that, we had to shrink our Sun down to a diameter of 1 inch. At that size Pluto was still 354 feet away!

Kindergarten Farm Fun MARY ELLEN MANNING

K

indergarten students at Journey Elementary have been learning about the role that farmers and farm animals play in our lives. Chickens, sheep, pigs, cows and horses have been the topic of discussion in the classrooms, from what the animals eat to what foods and products come from these animals.

Chicken peeps could be heard from the classrooms after patiently waiting for our chicken eggs to hatch. While waiting for hatching time, students learned how each chick grows inside the egg, hatches and develops into an adult.

The farm excitement continued when students learned about raising sheep from Tom Manning, a sheep producer from Beresford, SD. Learning how sheep are cared for, seeing what they eat and learning what their wool is used for was very interesting. The kids enjoyed the opportunity to pet the lambs and feel their soft wool. This unit provided many unforgettable hands on experiences.

What An Experience, What A Memory TONDA KIRTON

ot many have had the opportunity to make a presentation to the Harrisburg School Board, Superintendent, six principals, and a couple dozen adults, but ten-year-old Olivia Hruby, and six year old Xander Larsen, did just that April 14, 2014.

T

he students were selected because of good communication skills, a love of science, and a deep interest in microscopic life. Hruby and Larsen gave a ten-minute synopsis of events following a science lesson using oils. “Using the scientific method, we wanted to see if there were similarities in different kinds of oils”, said Olivia. She prepared an online Prezi, which detailed the steps and showed pictures of the process.

indergarten Xander explained that baby, sesame, canola, vegetable, motor, and olive oils were looked at. “Canola oil was my favorite, exclaimed Larsen, because I saw a dot with a circle, and then some squiggly lines.”

Microscope Mystery MRS. BROOKS AND 2ND GRADE TEAM

asten your seatbelts! You are about to see a world that is all around you, and yet so small that you probably have never seen it before or even close up! Harrisburg Journey Elementary 2nd graders have jumped into the world of a single organism or cell using high tech microscopes. It is the world inside your body, and inside the bodies of all living things. It is the world of the cell.

he 2nd grade students participated in a series of microscope activities on Monday, March 31st. Each class rotated to four different stations, relating to lessons all focusing on the microscope.

Microscope stations: ystery Slide? – Here students were partnered into groups of 3 or 4 and they observed various organisms through the microscopes. There were ten different microscopes and students recorded their hypothesis.

Some of the slides they enjoyed seeing were: human blood, dog tongue, housefly.

hat’s that center? – This was a teacher led station where they saw various slides zoomed in on specific parts of insects, fish, and animals.

The students had a very fun time discussing and guessing what each slide actually was.

he overall favorite station was looking through the microscopes and trying to decide what the mystery slide was. Abby Flanagan said, “I really liked looking at small things and trying to guess what it was…it was really fun!” Wyatt Reiners mentioned, “I liked seeing the human blood!” Raena Manning said, “I thought it was cool to look through the microscope and see small things get big.”

T

he weather has finally decided to let us have spring! With spring also comes carnival time. Once again, our LPTO delivered an incredible day of fun this year during our beloved Spring Carnival. Classrooms provided themed baskets and silent auction items to be bid on. Many games were set up and prizes awarded. This is a huge job for our LPTO and we thank them for their hard work and dedication to help our school. We truly appreciate all they do!

S

pring also brings testing for 3rd through 5th graders. This year the students were given the Smarter Balanced test. This is a test that is done online, and will replace the Dakota Step. It assesses students over grade appropriate math and reading skills. This year was a trial year so the company who designs the test can see what needs to be adjusted to make the test user friendly.

W

ith school coming to a fast halt, another part of our curriculum takes Liberty students to many different places. The excitement of taking education outside of the building is always fun. All Liberty students have a field trip planned to enhance their education. Assigned Liberty grade levels will be traveling to the Brookings Children’s Museum, Mitchell’s Prehistoric Indian Village, Lewis and Clark Discovery Center, Washington Pavilion, SDSU Agricultural Museum, Butterfly House, and the Outdoor Campus.

s the year continues to wrap up, there have been bittersweet changes in staffing. Among the few at Liberty, we would like to honor our own Shelly Mathiesen, Lisa Lewis, and Leslie McConnell. They have all been with us for several years and have been a huge asset in their relationships with the students as well as among their colleagues. These three individuals hold a special place in each and every one of our hearts and their compassion, intelligence, kindness, and free spirits will be significantly missed as they embark on their new and exciting journeys! Shelly is leaving Liberty, but venturing to Freedom, so we are fortunate enough to have her close and keep her in Harrisburg! Lisa is retiring, but has decided she would like to still be involved in the Harrisburg District by offering her educational skills as a substitute. Leslie is off to sunny California to embark on new teaching adventures, and to enjoy above zero temps year round. All will be highly missed within the Liberty family!

Cinco de mayo is a day to celebrate the group of Mexican soldiers who defended the road to Mexico City from the larger and far better trained French army.

his victory is celebrated in Puebla, Mexico and in many cities in the United States. However, it is largely forgotten in the rest of Mexico. Cinco de mayo celebrations have transitioned from remembering the Battle of Puebla to celebrating Mexican culture. In the spirit of the season, get outside with a group of friends and family! n April 4, 2014, 7th grader Cole Hansen competed in the State Geography Bee in Aberdeen, SD. Cole qualified by winning the competition at South Middle School. He was one question away from making the finals, top ten competitors. There were 70 students competing overall. Great job, Cole!

Meteorologist Visits South Middle School ANGIE PLAINE

F

or the past month, 6th grade advanced science students at South Middle School have been studying different weather tools. They have been using barometers, hydrometers, and have made anemometers to test pressure, humidity, and wind. Students have done labs about air pressure and what causes wind and weather patterns. Other topics have included water vapor, clouds, and dew points.

O

n April 10th, Phil Schreck from KSFY news visited the classroom to discuss with students what they have been studying and teach them even more about the weather. He discussed what made him become interested in meteorology, his schooling, and the day-to-day activities of a meteorologist. The students bombarded him with questions about all topics related to weather. He especially discussed last year’s ice storm and “Tornado Tuesday.” He also explained to the students the different symbols shown on a weather map and how they are able to predict the weather.

The kids were especially interested in severe weather, and Phil Schreck was willing to explain the many facets of weather phenomena. The students enjoyed having a weather expert answer their many questions related to the topic.

Students are expected to have their ID’s with them, and we are requesting no cell phone use during the dance.

BYOD he Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Pilot with our 7th grade students continues to move forward. Although there were a few challenges, the positives and enhancements of learning have been more prevalent. The Harrisburg School Board approved BYOD for 7th and 8th grade students next year.

There will be a parent meeting for this year’s 6th grade students and their parents regarding BYOD for next year. At the time of this submission, no day/ time had been set. Parents will be notified via email and/or School Reach.

Men In Medicine Day At Southeast Tech!

n Wednesday, April 9 the young men of Harrisburg South Middle School attended a post-secondary educational extravaganza entitled "Men in Medicine." During this event, our boys were exposed to a variety of medical fields including pharmacy technology, surgery technician, nursing, sonography, and nuclear medicine. The need for highly qualified and compassionate individuals in these often overlooked fields is huge and the opportunities for employment and advancement are great.

Our students enjoyed the opportunity to participate in real-life, hands-on learning activities as well as exposure to a variety of important careers within the realm of health care.
