Harrisburg Community Library News SUZANNE ANDERSON Save the date! The Library will be hosting an elementary age MOVIE NIGHT, February 3 beginning at 6 pm. Bring your young reader to the Community Room right by the library for a special showing of the movie “The BFG”. There will be popcorn, juice and a couple of surprises. The Community Library Book Club will be discussing the book “You Before Me” for the February book club meeting. Join us, Tuesday, February 28 for the meeting. Harrisburg Advisory Park Board The Harrisburg Park Board acts as an advisory group to the Mayor and City Council regarding planning and developing parks and their improvements.

The Park Board is composed of seven members appointed by the Mayor.

Current Park Board members are Danny Tank, Daniel Kvasnicka, Chris Kindt, Lois McMahon, Stefanie Bergsmith, Jonathan Debruin and Todd McKeown.

Starting in February 2017 the Harrisburg Park Board will move their meetings to the Harrisburg City Hall Conference room. They meet the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 6:00 pm.

City Of Harrisburg Utility Billing Service CITY OF HARRISBURG UTILITIES The City of Harrisburg Utilities will begin using Quality PreSort for mailing of the city water/sewer utility bills in February 2017. The bills will no longer be in a post card form but will be an 8 ½ x 11 sheet within an envelope. We are hopeful that this may assist with those post cards that get misplaced.

Please look for your bill to be delivered the first week of each month.

All utility water/sewer bills are due on the twentieth (20th) day of the month.

If bills are not paid by the due date, a twenty (20) percent penalty shall be assessed the following day. If a bill for utility services is not paid in full the customer shall be given notice by mail or by personal service by posting on the property that service shall be terminated within five (5) working days of the date of posting. Failure to pay all charges and penalties will result in disconnection of services. All utilities disconnected for nonpayment must pay a reconnect fee plus payment in full of the amount owed on the account before any utilities will be reconnected. Reconnections will be made only during business hours, 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday thru Friday.

This event was renewed last year and was a great success, please plan to join in the fun, get your foursome together and plan to play some golf for a great cause!

High School An Opportunity For HHS Students

CARTER LUCAS There are many opportunities within the Harrisburg High School District, and FCCLA is one of those opportunities. FCCLA is a club that can teach great leadership skills. Since leading and presenting are a struggle for most students, FCCLA is great for making those skills stronger.

FCCLA stands for Family Career and Community Leaders of America. It is also the only CSTO, Collective Security Treaty Organization, that focuses on the family. It is also very easy to join this club and anyone can join. By doing so, you shall grab a form and pay the dues that need to be paid.

One individual in the FCCLA program, Mariah Stensgaard, is the State Vice President of Membership and the Vice President within our local chapter. Since Mariah first heard of FCCLA in eighth grade, she has grown into a very successful leader within the FCCLA program. She stated, “When I was in 8th grade, the high schoolers in FCCLA came to the middle school and told me all the opportunities and fun they had in FCCLA, and I knew I wanted to be in it.” This year she is planning on doing a project to show at state but is still unsure of her topic.

FCCLA gives opportunities for fun, and they prepare students for the future.

Mariah also stated, “I love all of the travel opportunities that you have through FCCLA because I’ve gotten to go to a lot of fun places and tour around. I also love all of the people that you can meet through it. I have met some people that will be in my life forever.” FCCLA also looks good for students applying to colleges. “FCCLA looks great on college applications, as it’s a useful tool in seeking scholarships. Participation in this group also helps to develop beneficial life skills to prepare for life after high school.”

Many people have gone into FCCLA with no knowledge on what was to come. Some of the most successful people today have been in FCCLA; in addition many will be able to join this program next year. Mariah is excited for the future within FCCLA, “I guess my focus has been on the membership side throughout this year but I’m excited to see all of the new people that will join throughout the years and its development in our school. I’m also excited to see the projects that our chapter does.” FCCLA is a great way to develop important life skills and to learn new techniques.

With the season past the halfway mark, the debate team, who has had their fair share of success, is doing very well. The team started their year at tournaments at Roosevelt High School and Apple Valley, Minnesota, on November 5th; they competed very well at both. They then traveled up to Aberdeen, where one team came home with a second-place trophy. To finish off November, the team traveled to Mitchell and dominated the rankings. Varsity had a team finish third and a team finish fifth. Junior varsity did just as well when all three teams finished second, third, and fifth. To finish it off, the novice teams finished third and fourth. Harrisburg won the overall efficiency award for having the most wins per competitor with a record of 34-6.

December spared the team just as well. They traveled to Dowling high school in Des Moines and Roosevelt high school both on December 9-10 and Blake High School in Minneapolis on December 16-17. All three tournaments were successful, and the team is happy with how the season has gone by so far. Dr. McKee, the head debate coach, stated, “I think we have been very competitive at every tournament we have gone to this year, whether it is in South Dakota, Minnesota, or Iowa. Our teams have represented HHS very well.”

As the team preps for the rest of the year, they are optimistic for the remaining January tournaments, Harrisburg’s home tournament on February 4th, Rushmore Quals on February 24-25, and the state tournament on March 3-4. When asked what he was looking forward to in the remainder of the season, Dr. McKee stated, “I would like to see continued growth throughout the rest of the year - more kids traveling and more kids working hard to reach their potential. Hopefully, that will lead to some debaters qualifying for nationals and doing really well at state debate.”

DECA JULIA HOPES Harrisburg is home to many organizations that students can choose to participate in, including FCCLA, FFA, HOSA, and DECA. These organizations help to encourage students’ involvement in their communities through community service, agricultural education, health and science, as well as business. When Drew Bunkers, Harrisburg’s DECA advisor, was asked to describe DECA he said, “DECA is a student business organization that focuses on leadership skills within the world of business.” Over the course of the year, DECA members are granted the opportunity to attend the Central Region Leadership Conference, the South Dakota State Conference, Nationals, and the International Career and Development Conference. Students who choose to take part in the Central Region Leadership Conference this year will travel to Indianapolis. When students attend this conference, they come together with about 3000 other students from seventeen other states and experience opportunities to meet with business professionals from around the country, to gain real world knowledge, and to participate in breakout sessions. On the road to Nationals members are required to compete in the South Dakota State Conference; students who place first in individual competitions and second or above in team competitions receive the opportunity to go to Nationals. Anaheim, California, will be the host of this year’s Nationals, where there is expected to be seventeen to eighteen thousand students attending. While traveling and competing is the fun part of DECA, members gain several skills throughout all the fun. Mr. Bunkers believes that the most important skill is the professional communication and leadership not only in business careers, but also in every career. DECA is an all-round great opportunity offered to students wanting to meet new friends, gain life experience and self-confidence, as well as travel and make memories.

Harrisburg Debate Team Seems Convincing The HHS Debate team is off to a great start to their season with many top results this year. The team started their season in November with numerous after school novice meets for the first year competitors. A variety of students placed first throughout the first semester campaign including the teams of Amanda Audersch and Skylar King, Ellie Dykstra and Lauren Schnetter, and Collin Kehrwald and Nathaniel Papka.

The varsity teams have also been successful this year with a number of strong finishes at both out-of-state and in-state tournaments. The HHS public forum teams of Marisa Morris and Evan Papka, Hayden Cole and Landon Dinger, Lauren Schnetter and Nathanel Papka and Claire Tufty and Morris reached elimination rounds at tournaments in Apple Valley, Des Moines, and Minneapolis.

Hayden Cole and Evan Papka reached final round in Aberdeen at the Golden Eagle Cup, while Claire Tufty and Marisa Morris went undefeated in Mitchell at the McGovern Invitational. The novice teams of Maddie VanVoorst and Kaytlyn Hilligas and Lauren Schnetter and Nathaniel Papka also went undefeated at the McGovern.

The team had an exceptionally strong weekend at the Silver Bowl Invitational hosted by Sioux Falls Lincoln in mid-January. The varsity team of Claire Tufty CONTINUED ON PAGE 9, SEE DEBATE

The novice team of Amanda Audersch and Skylar King placed second in their respective division. As a whole the team earned the Tenacity Sweepstakes Award for the strongest team performance per capita.

The team hosts the Rushmore Challenge Speech and Debate tournament at HHS February 10. Two weeks later the team will compete in the National Speech and Debate Association national qualifying tournament at Sioux Falls Roosevelt where the team will fight for the chance to represent the Rushmore District at the national tournament in Birmingham, AL next June.

The SDHSAA State Debate tournament will be held in Mitchell March 3-4 to complete the regular season for the squad.

South Middle School

Be Positive. Be Humble. Be Dylan Strong.

KELSEY RAUE During the beginning of the school year, the Harrisburg community was informed that Harrisburg South Middle School student, Dylan Bourassa, was battling cancer. This cancer ended up being a rare cancer called Malignant Ewing Sarcoma, which resulted in Dylan having to get his leg amputated. The Harrisburg School District and the Harrisburg community have all contributed to helping and fundraising in multiple ways. Betsy Atwood, the South Middle School counselor, was a big part of the fundraising. When asked what the school did to help Dylan, she responded with explaining the frequently seen Dylan Strong bracelets that

were made with his favorite colors. Atwood said results from those sales were over $6,000 dollars.

Originally they ordered 800 bracelets but found they ran out very quickly. Once those ran out, they ordered 1,100 more. This has been a huge help for the family and has become a district wide support system for Dylan. In addition, Atwood explained how students could pay to wear hats; teachers could wear jeans and all proceeds went to Dylan and his family. The most recent event includes the Dimes for Dylan, a pledge anyone can do; for every assist either the girls or boys basketball teams earn, that amount of money goes to Dylan. Atwood also commented, “Finally, we wanted to show Dylan some love before his big surgery this fall. The school organized a send-off party, completed with a flash mob, balloons, and a student body sporting lots of purple, black, and gold.”

Students at HSMS are very excited to see Dylan come back to school later this year. Another cancer survivor, Randi VanDerSloot, is a teacher at HSMS. She has played a huge part in Dylan’s fight as well since she had experienced a similar struggle. Mrs. VanDerSloot was diagnosed in 2015, so she felt she had something in common with Dylan when he was diagnosed in 2016. She says, “Dylan is a really neat kid- very positive and determined.” Another event Mrs. VanDerSloot described was that there were t-shirts that were sold that Dylan designed. In conclusion, the Harrisburg School District is very proud to be supporting Dylan Bourassa and his fight through this cancer. His strength and his courage are incredible examples of courage. Supporting Dylan has been an amazing experience for everyone. Be Positive. Be Humble. Be Dylan Strong.

Harrisburg South Middle School Chapter Wins Third Place In FCCLA National Safe Rides –Save Lives PSA Contest The Harrisburg South Middle School Chapter of FCCLA developed and submitted a video public service announcement (PSA) as part of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Safe Rides – Save Lives PSA contest. Their PSA was chosen as the third place winner from applicants around the country and their chapter will receive a cash prize THE TIGER TIMES • FEBRUARY 2017 • PAGE 10

This contest was developed by FCCLA and sponsored by The National Road Safety Foundation to empower youth to create public service announcement messages that they feel will have an impact on their peer’s roadway safety. With traffic crashes as the leading cause of death for youth in the United States, both FCCLA and The National Road Safety

Foundation agree and support the leadership of youth addressing this safety concern.

Freedom Elementary Coding MS. VYHLIDAL & MRS. BARTHEL With the help of the technology integrationist, Mr. Knips, second grade students learned how to program and run games through coding. The coding was done through Code.org. It is a website that provides interactive exercises, tutorials, and

fun tools to create coding instructions in popular games like Minecraft, Angry Birds, Star Wars, and many others.

Horizon Elementary Project Warm-Up Horizon KELLI SEMMLER With Horizon Elementary in it’s first year, the school found that it had a need to provide warm hats, gloves, coats, and other winter gear for families in need. The student council took donations from families who had extra winter gear. The student council also sold concessions at the Horizon family movie night to make some extra money to purchase what they didn’t receive through donations.

The school also received a grant through Thrivent Financial. With this money, storage drawers were bought to store hats, gloves, and other extra clothing, and hanging rods were installed to hang donated winter coats.

Thanks to these donations, Horizon has been able to provide winter gear to students in need and have other gear available for those times when kids forget to bring hats and gloves. With the help of assistant principal Lisa Garrett, the student council was able to fulfill a need in their new school.

Elementary Students To Attend SDSU Honor Choir Festival HELEN SHORT Forty-one students from the Harrisburg School District have been chosen to participate in the 2017 Elementary Honor Choir Festival at South Dakota State University. This is the largest delegation to be chosen from Harrisburg in the last 49 years..

Students from grades 4-5-6 were required to submit audition CD’s. The criteria for the audition was echoing pitch patterns and perform 1 verse of “America”, accapella. Hundreds of students throughout the state auditioned, with 180 voices selected. The chosen singers will rehearse with guest conductor, Dr. Maribeth Yoder-White on

February 9, 2017. Dr. Yoder-White is a certified Orff-Schulwerk specialist, composer, and teacher. She teaches at Appalachian State University and DeKalb County Schools, and frequently works in international schools in Asia.

Journey Elementary Journey Elementary Library MRS. BETH WELLS JOURNEY LIBRARIAN Last week, Journey students took a look at some picture books—wordless picture books.

Our Prairie Bud and Prairie Bloom lists from the South Dakota State Library have several wordless picture books on them: Fox’s Garden

by Princesse CamCam, Coming Home by Ruth Greg, and Jim Curious: A Voyage to the Heart of the Sea by Matthias Picard.

I checked out Coming Home from our Harrisburg High School library as an ebook, so I could show it on our Interwrite Board in larger size. This is a great story to honor those who serve our country

and the sacrifices they and their families make for our freedom. Fox’s Garden is a beautiful book about how kindness brings joy and new life.

Jim Curious adds even another element to the wordless picture book category: 3D glasses! This fun underwater adventure makes you feel part of the story as you put on a pair of 3D glasses and feel the depth of the ocean. Two pairs of glasses are included in the book, so it is perfect to enjoy with a parent or friend.

We discussed why authors would chose to make a wordless picture book, and our Journey students came up with some excellent answers:

1. Perhaps the creator is better at illustrating/ drawing than writing.

2. It doesn’t limit the story to readers of one language: both Fox’s Garden and Jim Curious are written by French authors.

3. Those who can’t read yet can still enjoy or “tell” the story.

4. Different interpretations are allowed, since the story can be told in different ways.

I encourage students and teachers to use the wordless picture books for ELA and writing lessons and enjoyment. They truly are for all ages!

Liberty Elementary Holiday Spirit At Liberty Elementary MRS. ANDRE, MRS. KRAAYENBRINK, MRS. OTTEN, MRS. YERDON The kindergarteners at Liberty Elementary were full of holiday cheer this December. Students could be found serving their community and school by donating items to the Liberty Angel Tree, donating food to the Harrisburg Food Pantry, making gingerbread, watching a holiday reader’s theater performed

and singing carols with singers from the South Middle School Chamber Choir.

On Dec. 21st, kindergarteners had their winter parties. Mrs. Andre’s class had fun playing Christmas sign language bingo, decorating cookies and making wreaths.

During Mrs. Kraayenbrink’s winter party the students made ornaments, played pin the nose on Rudolph

and decorated cookies. Mrs. Otten’s kindergarten class enjoyed made toilet paper snowmen, played the santa beard game, made a tree craft and decorated cookies. Mrs. Yerdon’s class made a snowman ornament, listened to holiday stories while munching treats, and participated in a class book exchange.

Liberty kindergarteners were very fortunate to have many parents

attend their winter parties. Without all their help, our parties would not run as smoothly or be as much fun. Thank you so much Liberty Kindergarten parents! We are so thankful for you all!
