HARRISBURG SENIOR ORGANIZES VETERAN’S DAY MEMORIAL FITTING FOR THOSE WHO SERVED
W
ith the help of a Harrisburg High School Eagle Scout, Veterans and community members of the Harrisburg area celebrated Veteran’s Day in a special way this year. Matthew Blow, HHS student and member of Troop 171 in Harrisburg was an integral part in making this day possible. Each year their scout troop assists in the American Legion’s Memorial Day service at Pleasant View Cemetery. “Last year, I took notice of just how worn down and neglected their monument was. The flag pole on top had been broken in half, and the small brick structure it stood upon seemed rather small compared to what those veterans had sacrificed for their country.” Matt says.
B
ut it wasn’t easy. “Organizing this : MIKAYLA AXTELL PHOTO COURTESY project was quite an undertaking. I gave presentations to several organizations to help secure materials, such as the American Legion and the city commission of Harrisburg. I had to make sure everything arrived on time and in full quantity. For some things, like concrete, this was crucial. If left sitting too long, it would harden and be of no use.”

very young man with aspirations of becoming an Eagle Scout needs to do a service for the community, a lot like the high school’s required senior projects. It shouldn’t be done for profit, and leadership building is emphasized. Matt saw the disrepair of the memorial as an opportunity. “We began to conceptualize our project last spring. We finalized our design and began work early in the summer of 2013. Construction was finished in about September.”

hile Matt was a major player in bringing it all together, he couldn’t do it alone. “My father, Mark, was very helpful in providing the engineering knowledge and expertise I really needed. He gave me the drive and ambition necessary to complete the project. The scouts of Troop 171 were also instrumental in helping me to get all the physical work done. The cemetery helped with the granite, and the Legion helped to fund-raise. Both organizations contributed to critiquing the project’s design.” SEE MEMORIAL ON PAGE 19
