For Greater Things are Yet to Come ADRIENNE MCKEOWN, PRESIDENT, HARRISBURG ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION AND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE About a year and a half ago, I made a life-changing decision. I chose to start listening to Christian radio. It had been a particularly frustrating day at work, and as I roared down the interstate, I saw on the car in front of me a bumper sticker for Life 96.5. I figured that might be just what I needed to reset my attitude. I haven’t changed my radio dial since. Why do I share this with you? Because what I’ve found is that I’ve had several moments when just the right song has come on at just the right time, and one of those times awhile back, it was about Harrisburg. I was traveling south on Cliff Avenue, nearing the north side of our city limits. I don’t recall the particular thoughts running through my mind at the time, but I was thinking about all of the things we on the Economic Development Board of Directors have talked about and what we’d like to do to achieve growth and prosperity in Harrisburg. And while Harrisburg is the fastest growing community in South Dakota, that blessing brings challenges, too. There are days when the “to do” list can seem
quite daunting. Additionally, as I’ve come to learn over the years, nothing in government or economic development moves very quickly, so while we might have ideas and plans, it can take a really long time for those to come to fruition. That said, the song on the radio that day was “God of this City” from my favorite Christian artist, Chris Tomlin. In it he sings, “For greater things are yet to come, and greater things are still to be done in this city.” What a boost of encouragement that was! As I looked across the openness of the corn fields that run through the middle of town, I knew that good things were on the horizon for Harrisburg. Last month, we held our Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting. Steve VanBuskirk was our featured guest speaker, and he shared with us the plans for development at Devitt Farms. As you know, a major milestone in our growth—opening a hometown grocery store—is part of that plan. But there’s so much more coming, and not just in that development but throughout town. It’s a slow process, but the HEDC looks forward to helping shape that growth in 2017 and we’re excited to move forward and make Harrisburg an even better place to call home. Greater things are yet to come!
