Thankful To Be Living In Harrisburg ADRIENNE MCKEOWN, PRESIDENT, HARRISBURG ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION AND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Just last week, my family and I celebrated a milestone. We have now been Harrisburg residents for 10 years. When my husband and I moved out here with our then 4-monthold daughter, we were looking for a small town and a small school where we could raise her in a safe environment and where we would get to know our neighbors—even if those “neighbors” lived across town. Well, the small school idea didn’t quite pan out. And with Harrisburg being the fastest growing community in the state of South Dakota, some might argue that the title “small town” doesn’t quite fit anymore either. However, what has remained the same over the past ten years is the friendly, community atmosphere where neighbors watch out for neighbors, where residents are encouraged to become involved in the community, and where the local businesses invest in the people who live here. As we celebrate Thanksgiving this month, I want to extend my thanks to the people who make Harrisburg a great place to live. We have city employees who literally work through 100-year floods and 18 inch snowfalls to keep our city running. We have dedicated teachers who give tirelessly to educate our large population of young people. We have
Honoring The Victorious Veterans ASHLEY O’CONNOR November 11, 1918, was a day to remember for the Americans. A day to stand strong, feel proud, and give back. Although, at times people can take multiple situations for granted. We have to remember that the way standards are now are not how they have always been. Remembering all the men who fought for us and all the families who lost loved ones is important. Even though we all have the chance to be brave during different situations, such as our very own teachers at HHS have demonstrated for all of us, it can be difficult. Brave, confident, and strong are only some of the
citizens who volunteer to serve on boards that work to make the community better—the Parks Board, the Library Board, the Harrisburg Days Foundation, the Planning & Zoning Commission, and of course our Economic Development/Chamber Board. We have an active volunteer fire department and an American Legion full of veterans who have put others’ lives before their own. And we have a growing business community (have you heard we’re building a Fareway grocery store?) that works together to make Harrisburg better. Throughout the year, our nearly 100 Chamber members sponsor several events for the children and families in our community. They don’t make money by hosting Easter egg hunts or trick-or-treating or by bringing Santa to town for pancakes. They do it because it fosters a sense of community, and it makes Harrisburg a better place to live. They do it because they care about the future of Harrisburg and the families who live here. So during this month of giving thanks, I thank each and every one of our Chamber members for your investment in our community as well as all of the residents who step forward to serve in various capacities. Ten years later, my family (which now includes two more children) and I are so grateful to be living in Harrisburg and to have the privilege to work with you to develop the future of our community. Together, we make Harrisburg a great place to call home.
words that describe the people who has lost their lives for us. I am glad that HHS takes time to teach us about the importance of Veterans Day; I am a proud member of HHS choir and am thankful that I am able to be a part of the ceremony. I know many HHS students either have someone in their family who served or know of someone who currently serves. I, however, have multiple family members who serve for our country, and I am very proud of them. This year’s Veterans Day speaker is Mr. Ryan Rollinger. HHS students, staff, and community members are all welcome to join us for the Veteran’s Day Program, hosted by the National Honor Society. Join us November 11th at 9am in the high school gymnasium!
