Your Chamber Won’t Be Hibernating ADRIENNE MCKEOWN, PRESIDENT, HARRISBURG ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION AND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE As the calendar turns to October and the leaves change brilliant colors, we South Dakotans know that our annual hibernation during the cold winter months isn’t far off. Soon, we’ll take comfort in front of our fireplaces and burrow into our nice warm homes to wait out the chill of winter. Your Harrisburg Chamber of Commerce, however, won’t be hibernating anytime soon. Thanks to your local merchants, there are several opportunities over the next few months for you and your family to avoid hibernation and keep having fun despite the colder weather.

First up is Business Trick or Treating. Through this annual Harrisburg tradition, your little goblins are invited to sport their Halloween costumes and visit local Chamber members for treats and fun. (No tricks.) This event will take place the Friday before Halloween, Oct. 28, from 2 – 5 p.m. Watch the Chamber’s Facebook page for the map of participating businesses and where you can find other fun activities.

It’s hard to imagine, but Christmas is just around the corner. Join the Chamber of Commerce for our annual Breakfast with Santa event on Saturday, Dec. 10 at Harrisburg South Middle School. There will be pancakes, crafts, and— of course—the opportunity to take pictures with St. Nicholas himself. Mark your calendars now and watch for more details to come.

And finally, the Chamber is proud to present the second annual Business Expo. This year’s event will be held in conjunction with the Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. While your kids are enjoying crafts and pancakes, come visit with our local merchants and learn more about how they are building our community and growing our local economy. There may even be opportunities to do some Christmas shopping! And if you’re an in-home business owner and would like to participate in the Business Expo, contact Alysia at City Hall.

Food Pantry Ramps Up For Boy Scout Food Drive It’s that time again!

The last week in October, the Boy Scouts will conduct their annual food drive. As the grateful recipients of these donations, the Harrisburg Area Food Pantry is making preparations.

In order to duplicate the successful food drive that took place last year, we are looking for volunteers for three separate dates: Saturday, October 15th we’ll be stuffing 3,000 bags from 10 – noon.

Saturday, October 29th is the actual date of the food drive. After collecting the donations, the bags will be delivered to the pantry at 203 Prairie St in Harrisburg. We are setting up volunteers to help in two hour overlapping shifts starting at 9:00 am. For example, 9:00 – 11:00, 9:30 – 11:30, 10:00 – noon, etc. The last shift will be from 3:00 – 5:00. Help is needed weighing the food, bringing it from the curb into the pantry, and sorting.

Sunday, October 30th we’ll be sorting and stocking from noon – 4:00.

Jim Slack Joins Board Of Local Food Pantry

The Harrisburg Area Food Pantry constantly strives to improve as an outreach organization serving the surrounding area. As a result, we have established an Advisory Board to oversee all facets of the operation.

We are proud to announce the addition of Jim Slack, Vice President of Sanford World Clinic, to our Board. Jim and his wife Paula, along with their children Caitlyn, Logan and Laura, are members of Harrisburg United Methodist Church and highly involved in the Harrisburg community.

Harrisburg Community Library News SUZANNE ANDERSON As we head into fall the Community Library is excited to get started with Tuesday Story Time. Join the librarians each Tuesday at 10:00 am. Story Time is geared toward the 3-5 year old readers with stories centered on a theme and a craft. The library is also back to fall hours: Monday-Thursday 9-3; 4-7, Friday 4-7, & Saturday 10-12. October’s Book Club book choice is “The Light Between Oceans” by M.L. Stedman. Book Club discussion is always the last Tuesday of the month at 6:00 pm in the conference room by the library. The library will also once again be a participating member in the Harrisburg Chamber of Commerce Business Trick or Treat for Halloween.

Harrisburg City Compost Site Residents living within the city limits of Harrisburg only!

The Harrisburg City Compost Site located at 801 S Prairie Street – Harrisburg Maintenance Facility will be open weather permitting, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, and Saturday from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, Sunday - Closed. Please do not leave your bags by the gate if it is closed.

Only items allowed at this site are branches, grass clippings, and leaves.

No plastic bags or garbage!

Absolutely no other materials! This is not a dump site and those caught dumping would be in violation and turned over to the authorities. There is the possibility of closing the site for everyone if the rules are not observed.

The 1983 Harrisburg Boys State Track Team is being inducted in the Outstanding Team Achievement category. These seven young men competed in the South Dakota State Track Meet and finished a close second to Groton. The 3200 meter relay placed 2nd, the 1600 meter relay placed 5th, Soren Ostergaard placed 1st in the 3200 meter run and 4th in the 1600 meter run. Verle Valentine placed 3rd in the 800 meters and 5th in the Triple Jump and Steve Messner placed 2nd in the shot put.

Verle Valentine, Male Athlete

(Class of 1973) is being inducted in the male athlete category.

Ron was a 12-year senior at Harrisburg and he participated and lettered in football, basketball and track. He was a member of the sprint medley and 880 relay teams that set school records his senior year ad represented Harrisburg at the state track meet that year. In basketball, he was a starter for the 1972 District Championship team. Ron’s real love was for football. He made the All-Conference Team his sophomore, junior and senior years and also was named to the First Team All-State his senior year. That year he rushed for 1250 yards, averaging 10 yards per carry. He scored 17 touchdowns, 10 two point conversions and also kicked five extra points. Ron also returned kickoffs and punts, averaging 40 yards per kickoff return and 27 yards per punt return. He also was the kicker and the punter for the team. In addition to his offensive talents he played linebacker on defense and had seven interceptions his senior year.

(Class of 1985) is being inducted in the male athlete category. Verle graduated from HHs in 1985 as one of Harrisburg’s most accomplished athletes. Verle started his varsity athletic career in 8th grade on the Cross Country and track teams. He qualified for the state cross country meet as a freshman and a sophomore. As a sophomore, he was a member of the state runner up cross country team of 1982 while finishing 11th overall. Verle switched from cross country to football his last two years of high school and was a member of first state championship football team in 1984. That team only had 1 loss in over two years. Verle was a wide receiver, defensive back, kicker and punter and still hold the school record for best punting average in a season. Verle qualified for the state track meet all four years of high school and won a total of 10 medals in the state meet and also two Howard Wood Dakota Relay championship medals.

After over 30 years, Verle still holds school records in the 800 meter run and the 3200 meter relay. He was also a member of the 1983 state runner up track team, of which he placed in four events. Verle was a 4-year starter on the varsity basketball team with a career average of 19.8 points per game and 9.6 rebounds per game. He is still third in school history with 1545 points and second in school history with 746 rebounds. Verle capped his career with an all-state selection his senior year averaging 24.6 points and 13.6 rebounds per game. In addition to his athletic career, Verle was a percussionist in the band, served on the annual committee and the student council.

Molly (Hayes) Fink, Female Athlete (Class of 2006) is being inducted in the female athlete category. The youngest of four children, Molly’s competitiveness and love for sports started at a very young age. While attending elementary school at Harrisburg, Molly competed in a variety of sports to include basketball, volleyball, soccer, baton, softball, and even pee wee football.

She was already setting records in the mile run as part of the Presidential Physical fitness Test during her K-6th grades.

Molly’s high school athletic career began as a 7th grader while competing on the varsity track team, with her best events being the 1600 meter and 3200 meter run. At one point in her career, she held the school record for the 800 meter run, 1600 meter run, and 3200 meter run. The 3200 meter run record still stands today. She competed and placed in multiple state track meets with her best finish placing 1st in the 3200 meter run her 8th grade year. Additional state placings were: 3rd in 3200 meter run in 2001 and 2003; 4th in 1600 meter run in 2002; and 7th in 1600 meter run in 2001.

Molly was named to the state “all tournament” team that same year.

Molly was on the varsity basketball team as an 8th grader and was the starting point guard her freshman through senior years. Molly finished with a decorated basketball career receiving 2nd team all-conference awards her freshman and sophomore years, and 1st team all-conference awards her junior and senior years. She was also named Big Sioux Conference MVP her senior year and scored a career high 1117 points during her years at HHS, fourth on the all-time scoring list. She was also 2nd in most points scored in a single game, 2nd in career steals. 3rd in career assists, and in the top ten in numerous other records. To finish off her high school athletic accomplishments, Molly was named one of South Dakota’s “Elite 15 Women Athletes” in 2006 and lettered 14 times in Harrisburg HS athletics. In addition to Molly’s athletic career, she was voted Harrisburg’s Homecoming Queen her Senior year.

Molly’s accomplishments did not end at Harrisburg. She continued her academic and athletic careers at Augustana College. In August 2016, she married Koln Fink who too attended Harrisburg High School K-12th grade. She is the daughter of Tom and Peggy Hayes, and sister to Kerry, Maggie and Jim. Molly continues to participate in a variety of sports and just completed her first marathon in June of this year.

Hazel Wek, Coach/Mentor (Vocal/Choir Instructor) is being inducted in the coach/mentor category. For 30 years, (1964 to 1994), at Harrisburg High School, Hazel was everything music! In 1958, she graduated from USD majoring in Fine Arts with a minor in English.

She completed her Masters degree in music at USD in 1970. During her time at Harrisburg, she was responsible for vocal music for the elementary, junior high and high school. She was involved in the pops concerts, elementary Christmas programs, grade school operetta, junior high mini musical, introductory guitar class for junior high, high school vocal concerts, small ensembles, vocal solos, high school swing choir and musicals. She also helped with music for Prom, Coronation, Baccalaureate and Commencement. Through the years, she also was the librarian, taught English I and II, had the band program for 2 years and taught declam. She led many special practice sessions for All-State Chorus, played for many weddings in the community and gave piano lessons after school. Her motivation in teaching music was to impress the importance of music to the students, to enjoy and take the experience with them in their later years, so that an expression of music could become an integral part of their lives. Her passion for music was passed down to her students and to her family. She had many amazing soloists that continue to share their music with the world. Hazel’s music legacy and love for music will live on forever!

Hazel and her husband Andrew, reside in Sioux Falls and have been married for 59 years. They have 2 children, a son, Brian Wek, wife Jackie and children Nathan and Adam and a daughter, Barb Bennett, husband Bryan and children Jared and Abigail.

Danny Kealey,Coach/ Mentor (Band Instructor) is being inducted in the coach/ mentor category. From 1973 to 1990, Danny directed the Harrisburg High School band, taught individual lessons and was a very well-respected, much loved music man, who took the Harrisburg band program to new heights. Danny graduated from Augustana with a Bachelor of Science in Music in 1962 and from Northern in 1967 with a Masters in Music Education. His first teaching job was at Baltic and he also taught in the Sioux Falls school district and in Hawarden, Iowa, before coming to Harrisburg in 1973 and staying until his retirement in 1990. Danny was an amazing musician that had a love for teaching and took pride in the awards his bands earned at music contests around the country. From Kansas City to Minneapolis, to Chicago, the Harrisburg High School band was well known for its amazing leader and talented students! Music was in Danny’s blood from a very early age and he made it his mission to learn every instrument he could. He played taps for many funerals and Memorial Day services from the time he was 12 years old, until he was in his late 70’s.

He had a dance band from the early 60’s until the Danny Kealey Orchestra disbanded in 2009. Danny’s love for music showed in every private lesson he gave and in preparing for all the band concerts he directed and the marching bands he led. He was so proud of all his students and loved showcasing the talent that came from Harrisburg High School. One of his favorite phrases he shared with all his students over the years and still to this day is, “Follow your heart and the music will take you there!” His love for music and passing it on to his students and his family is his legacy.

Danny and his wife Lucille, reside in Sioux Falls and have been married for 62 years. They have 5 children, Rosemary DesCamps and her husband Bill, Terry Kealey and his wife Ann, Anita Kealey-Brannian and her husband John, Tom Kealey, dec’d April 2014, and Danette Kealey-Swenson and her husband Mark. Danny and Lucille have 5 grandchildren, Megan, Tyson, Saida, Colin and Aidan and 1 great-grandchild, “Kealey”.

Rod & Linnie Mae Pickert, Community Contributors Rod & Linnie Mae Pickert are being inducted in the Community Contributor category.

Linnie Mae (Goodendorf) Pickert was born May 5, l916, in Harrisburg where she lived her entire life. She attended Harrisburg schools for all 12 years and graduated in l934. She was the second queen at HHS and was involved in many activities, including girls’ basketball. She was a wife and homemaker and loved Harrisburg unconditionally.

Roderick Pickert was born in Norway, Iowa, on May 20, 1916, where he lived until he was in his teens. His family moved to Harrisburg where he attended 2 years of high school before graduating from Sioux Falls Washington High School in l934. He began working at John Morrell’s at age 18, retiring at age 55 after working for 37 years there. Rod and Linnie Mae were married on April 29, 1939, in Sioux Falls. They lived their entire 59 years of marriage in Harrisburg. Linnie Mae was a lifetime member of the Harrisburg United Methodist Church where she was active in the women’s groups. She was also active in the Harrisburg PTA. Roderick also attended UMC. Rod was on the town board and ran the scoreboard in the old gym for basketball games for many years. Rod and Linnie Mae could be seen watching any kind of event at school, ranging from sporting events to musical events, to school plays. They were honored by the Tiger Booster Club in 1989 for their enthusiasm, support and attendance. Even though Mae suffered a stroke in l979, their support never waned. They sat in the front row at basketball games and enjoyed football games from the front seat of their blue Chevy station wagon parked on the 50 yard line. To assure their favorite spot would be available, Rod would park the car in their favorite spot Thursday night or early Friday morning. Mae loved to give suckers to her little friends at games or wherever she saw them. She also told her grandson Bob that she would give him $10 for every 3 pointer he made during the basketball season. However, when he scored several THE TIGER TIMES • OCTOBER 2016 • PAGE 8

during one game, she lowered her monetary amount to $5. Rod stood at the locker room door when Bob’s team came out at the beginning of the game. He would quietly say, “Give them hell, boys.”

In l952 the Tigers started 6-man football. Of course, Rod and Mae were there cheering on their Tigers and watching the team attain a 2 win 3 loss record. As is evident, their love and interest for the Tigers started early on, even before this. One of the high lights for both of them was watching the Tigers win the l960 State B Basketball Championship at the Huron Arena.

Their son Bob was a starting guard on the team and was named to the All-Tournament team. Bob graduated in l961. Their daughter Sherry was a cheerleader that year and she graduated in l962. Their youngest daughter Linda also cheered for HHS and was homecoming queen in l967. She graduated in l968. Bob, Sherry and Linda all graduated from Sioux Falls College (USF). Another highlight was l993 when the Tigers won the 11 B Football Championship at the Dome in Vermillion. Their grandson, Bob Wekenman played on that team, as well as being on the basketball and track teams. He graduated in l994. The old football field was dedicated to Brian Wekenman, their son-in-law. Their granddaughter Anne Marie (class of l989) was active in many activities at HHS. Their other grandchild, John Pickert, graduated from Waseca Minnesota High School in l984. Linnie Mae died in l998 at age 82 and Roderick died in 2006 at age 90.

Their immediate family includes their son Bob and his wife Evelyn of Haines City, Florida, their grandson John and his wife Heidi and their great grandsons Max and Mason of Celebration, Florida; their daughter Sherry and her husband Chuck Davis of Sioux Falls; and their daughter Linda (Brian, deceased) Wekenman of Sioux Falls, their grand daughter, Anne Marie and her husband Jeff Feiock and their great grandchildren Bob and Maria of Sioux Falls; and their grandson, Bob Wekenman of Summerfield, Florida.

The family appreciates the recognition of Roderick and Linnie Mae, who would be so proud to be members of the “Tiger Hall of Fame.”

Putting Others Before Self - The Harrisburg Way RYAN ROLLINGER, ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL, HHS The Fall season and end of September have always been a special time of year for me. Hunting season and baseball play-offs are just around the corner. Two of my true passions, football and school, are in full swing with homecomings having been celebrated or nigh. Selfishly, the end of September is the celebration of my birth.

This year will commemorate the blessing of 40 years of a charmed life. Many of you reading this have played a part in that charm.

Through four decades of being a Harrisburgian? Harrisburgite? I have been witness to many changes in this town and seen its community spirit first-hand. Whether rallying around a family in need, a newly diagnosed cancer patient, or a farmer requiring harvest help, I can recall multiple examples of selfless acts shown by our brethren. It is this servant attitude that I both admire and attempt to model.

Observing selflessness began early with my grandparents, parents and church, and then later in school years with teachers and coaches. In college I was fortunate enough to play under coach Bob Young at USF, who made servant leadership part of our development. This was always highlighted by watching a small community take care of its own and rally when necessary.

The end of September is now significant to me for another reason. As we approach the year anniversary of the shooting incident at the High School, I am reminded that this event will forever be tied to our school, community, and alas, to me. Reflecting a year later brings many thoughts, memories and emotions back to the surface. The gamut of these are both haunting and reassuring.

Rather than the event itself, my focus is on the reaction of our community and the cohesiveness displayed. Though geography has placed a divide in our school district, on September 30, 2015 it didn’t matter if you were from Harrisburg proper, a country kid or from southern Sioux Falls. On that day we were all Tigers. Do we have to let where we live define our commitment to one another? It is my hope we would treat all as our neighbor. I know this anniversary will be as different for each as the number who recall.

What I would ask is that as we reflect on the occurrence we also recall the reaction.

That day exposed our core. We forgot about work, school, games, appointments and all of the clutter that is involved with life. We counted blessings, said prayers for our children and for one another. We focused on what truly matters. Should it take an event such as this? No, but often times it does. While I can wish away the event, I will never the outcome.

It is this selfless attitude that makes Harrisburg so special and #HarrisburgStrong. As we move forward, one of our messages to students has been to attempt to put others before self. Imagine what our work, school and community would be like if each of us was able to complete this even for minutes a day. It has been and will continue to be a personal focus for me. My hope is that this effect will ripple from a small Midwestern town and gain strength as it travels.

So for me on this one-year recollection I would ask that you revisit your reaction that day. Put the clutter of life second and what truly matters back to the forefront.

With fall sports now in full force, th`e Harrisburg Tigers are well into a successful season of football, volleyball, golf, and tennis. In crosscountry, an often over-looked sport, our school has many runners putting in hard work everyday. Having several meets already out of the way, the Tiger runners are working towards the ESD Conference meet and the SD State Championship meet.

This fall, the Harrisburg cheer team aims to create an atmosphere at Tiger football games as they cheer from the sidelines on Game Day. With 12 varsity and 8 JV cheerleaders, the program continues to grow in size and talent.

In August the team had the opportunity to learn from the SDSU cheer coach and team members in a 2-day private camp. The team worked on basic cheer skills, stunting, and learning a routine to perform at the Homecoming Pep Fest and football game. Coach Eve Becker is excited about the changes that are happening in the program. “We have really strong leaders returning from last year and very talented and hard-working new girls. I’m excited with what we have already accomplished this early in the season,” Becker said.

Golf is not the most popular sport in the Harrisburg School District, but that doesn’t mean that the sport cannot be both fun and rewarding to its participants. Mark Beckstrand, who is the Harrisburg boys’ golf coach, said, “My favorite part of being a golf coach is being around the kids.” Not many of those kids are better than Harrisburg’s second place golfer, Jackson Schroeppel. When asked about his experiences on the team, he responded, “I have a lot of friends on the golf team and it’s a lot of fun traveling to tournaments with them. We always do fun things as a team when we travel, and I have a lot of good memories from state.” Golfers want to do well not only as a team but also as an individual. “I first knew I wanted to be a golfer when I played in my first individual tournament,” said Jackson, “I had a lot of fun, and I placed 3rd. I wanted to eventually win a tournament, so I decided to focus on golf.” Like Jackson, Mark Beckstrand has many memories that double as achievements from his fifteen years of coaching, “My greatest achievement as a golf coach is having an individual state champion and two runner-up state tournament finishes.”

Many people might be indecisive about going out for the golf team, but Mark replies, “I would tell you to definitely go out. When you play golf, you learn more than just the game itself. You learn integrity, honor, and ways to deal with adversity.” The Harrisburg Golf Team and its future are dependent on who goes out each year; if a student enjoys having a good time while learning the basics of a sport, the Harrisburg Golf Team may be a perfect fit for that individual.

One big event the team just wrapped up was Tiger Bowl on September 10. The cheerleaders hosted a Cheer Camp in the morning for students in grades k-6. The 95 camp participants performed at the Tiger Bowl that night. Another highlight of the season includes Homecoming Week, which is filled with elementary pep fests, a KTWB radio broadcast, the pep rally, parade, and football game, with a half-time performance. In October the team has the opportunity to “Think Pink” to raise funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer. Cheerleaders will sell cupcakes at lunch

Hoping To Win It All RYAN HILL The Tigers football team has gotten off to a good start to the season, winning the majority of their first games, and they hope to continue to build on the early momentum. As the playoffs and state championship grow closer, there are a few goals that they hope to accomplish in their season. The Tigers, which have so far looked good, seem to think that they will keep playing well. Head Coach Brandon White feels that his team, which is playing very well, needs to be playing the best football they can by the end of the season. The Tigers had a great start to their season by winning their first three games against Mitchell, Huron, and Pierre before having their win streak snapped

Rock, Paper, Scissors HAILEY HARKIN

ASL At HHS MORGAN GABEL

This year the Harrisburg High School Marching band has a show called Rock, Paper, Scissors.

The practiced show starts with rock, which moves from an earthy feel to rock and roll.

Paper then comes and covers rock with a more elegant feel; scissors come next, outing paper to shreds and leading to the mash up of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Props used in the show include rocks, sheets of paper, and paper shreds.

Because the show needs directors, Tim Stockman, Jason Groon, and Matt Shervey came in to help. Elizabeth Martinez is the color guard director.

The band, going into its third year, plans to attend the Pursuit of Excellence, Festival of Bands, Dutchmen Field Championship, Quad State, and Hobo Days. In addition, the band also plays at all of the home football games.

Megan Yee is a member of the color guard and she explained, “I think that the hardest part of color guard is learning the routine. It is vital that we all learn the work exactly the same so that it is clean in our show. One thing I believe the entire band wishes for, including the directors, is that we focus on getting better and progressively moving forward. Whether it is with run-throughs, practices, sectionals, or clinics, we constantly strive to get better. Our show is meant to make people feel good, we have so much fun performing it! I hope the audience has fun watching it as well.

For parents especially, I hope they acknowledge and appreciate all of the hard work their children have put into their show.” The band practices for 2.5 hours every Tuesday and Thursday to continue improving. HHS Choir Takes It Up An Octave BRYNN BERVEN

Ms. Miller, the sign language teacher at Harrisburg High School, shed some light on American Sign Language class offering and the deaf culture in general. Ms. Miller stated, “There are several reasons why it’s important for hearing people to learn about deaf culture.” She also said that learning about deaf culture allows hearing people to see there is more to being deaf than just not being able to hear sounds. Ms. Miller’s experience includes teaching an ASL class for 10 years and getting her Masters degree in Sign Language Education from Gallaudet. Before Ms. Miller started teaching at the high school, she was an adjunct professor at Augustana University. Being deaf can be isolating if there aren’t any peers to communicate with; we want to show the local deaf and hearing community that Harrisburg High School, (and district) is committed to providing American Sign Language classes and making our community more accessible for deaf individuals.

Along with Dr. Lein making announcements about deaf culture in the morning, the high school students have been learning a new sign each day.

Even though most deaf people are completely happy and lead productive lives as they are, some deaf people do have surgical implants to repair their hearing. As Ms. Miller stated, deaf people can be talented in their own ways. “We can be artistic, musical, professional, and articulate the way we are.” In class, Ms. Miller also explained that having a surgical implant can be very dangerous and is not very effective for most deaf people.

FFA Member Exchange With Connecticut High Achievers In Harrisburg Chapter NICOLE HUDSON, FFA SECRETARY This summer the Harrisburg FFA participated in a chapter exchange with the Housatonic Valley FFA Chapter in Connecticut.

Housatonic Valley sent two members, Lauren Murtagh and Patrick Kennedy to South Dakota for a week; in exchange the Harrisburg FFA sent Nicole Hudson and Connor McAllister to Connecticut the following week. While Lauren and Patrick were in South Dakota, they stayed with the Hudson and McAllister families. Our school’s student section is an important part of the Harrisburg fan base and their exuberant display on the sidelines makes the most of a home court advantage. The Harrisburg student’s continued cheering not only helps energize our girls to push through for the win, but it also frazzles the opposing team.

Welcome to game day. Walking into a crowded gym during a Harrisburg tiger volleyball game is exciting to say the least. On the court you can see the players soar as they hit kill after kill. Off the court, you certainly can’t miss the dozens of students in the stands beside it, cheering the tigers on to victory. The tiger fans are extremely dedicated as they stand the entire game cheering. Fans of all ages can come together during these games as they all work to cheer on their favorite team. The goal of the tiger students is to give their players enough encouragement to help them push through the game whether they are winning or losing.

Volleyball matches can sometimes be pushed to a rousing five sets before a winner is claimed. Even then the students stand and cheer through all five games. It is clear that to not only the players, but to the parents as well, that these dedicated tiger fans support their team win or lose. He also says that the team is showing good perseverance, which has shown in their great second half play where they have scored a lot of points, not given up many points, and overall played a great second half. With the end of the season coming closer, the Tigers feel that they can make a deep run into the playoffs or maybe even win, but the season is far from over and there is still a lot of football to be played.

JAYDEN PIXLER Again this year, Tiger Nation hosted Tiger Bowl on September 10, 2016. Tiger Nation, our district’s activities booster club, manages Tiger Bowl, fundraises for activities, and supports our district. Tiger Bowl has become what it is today because of the help and support of Tiger Nation.

According to Vicki Lanier, the Vice President of Tiger Nation, the organization fundraised and donated a lot to our community, such as money to 20 extra curricular groups. Every extra curricular group that asked for funding this past spring received a monetary donation. Tiger Nation also gives the money made from Tiger Bowl back to the community. Lanier said it is an honor to run and keep Tiger Bowl going.

The Harrisburg School District is home to many student teachers, especially at the high school. One of the student teachers at Harrisburg High School is Ms. Samantha Mathis, a graduate of Dell Rapids High School, who is currently finishing her senior year at the University of South Dakota.

Samantha Mathis was a part of many activities in high school, including National Honor Society, Honor Roll, and Academic All State. At USD she has been a part of the Dean’s List and is in her last year of her Bachelors of Science in English Education Degree. During her time at HHS she will be shadowing Ms. Weber and Ms. Becker. She is also volunteer-coaching for the high school cheer team. In her free time she likes to read books that are made into movies, binge watch Criminal Minds, eat chips and queso, and sleep. Samantha will be spending the whole year with the two Mod-CL teachers and says that she is a believer in the customized learning program, as it gives students a unique way to learn as they take control of their education; she can’t wait to explore it further.

The moment that Ms. Mathis met Ms. Weber she knew that she was the type of teacher she would later strive to be in her own career; she hopes to learn everything she can from Ms. Weber in their first semester together. She said, “I am very excited about having the opportunity to student teach at Harrisburg High School, and if the circumstance presents itself in the future I would like to be teaching and coaching cheer alongside here at HHS.”

The home football game named Tiger Bowl has occurred for decades in Harrisburg. Tiger Bowl started out only as a football game; now it has grown to much more than that. Tiger Bowl has been a tradition for so many years.

Over time the growth in our community has increased the attendance at Tiger Bowl. The whole day is packed with excitement and activities, such as soccer, volleyball, and tennis; the day wraps up with the football game.

Lanier also commented, “This year we are pleased to announce that over $16,000 was raised at Tiger Bowl, from the football and cheer camps, program sponsors, program sales, inflatable passes, gate entrance, etc.”

Because Tiger Nation manages this event, all of these funds are possible.

HHS Students At National TEAMS Competition LANDON ZAVESKY Towards the end of June, a team of Harrisburg students made their way back to the high school early in the morning.

The group already won the TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science) competition at the state level, located on the SDSU campus. In winning, its members (Hunter Chear, Landon Dinger, Rilyn Fox, Colby Reynolds, Cole Titze, Seth Wilcox, and Landon Zavesky) were qualified for the National conference under the guidance of coaches Lisa Cardillo and Greg Hammerquist, in Nashville Tennessee.

Harrisburg High School (HHS) Student Council has been hard at work since late summer generating plans, serving others, and creating committees. While the council aids the general public, and more specifically the high school, the student council advisor, Erika Kruggel, says it benefits the students involved in the program as well. There were only twenty-three students and it wasn’t even a class yet; it was twenty minutes during lunch. She had added so many items to the program that it started to grow and officially turned into a class. She not only brought the class a long way but also made outstanding performances.

Students from both chapters learned a great deal from each other and gained a better understanding of the differences and similarities of the agricultural industry in different parts of the country. They also learned that FFA chapters do many of the same events and are looking forward to seeing Lauren in Indianapolis at the National FFA Convention where she will be competing in the national nursery/landscape CDE. The students also learned the ups and downs of air travel as the 4 of them were luck enough to spend a night in the Chicago O’Hare airport due to weather canceling one of their flights.

South Middle School Are You Dylan Strong?

BETSY ATWOOD, SMS SCHOOL COUNSELOR Meet Dylan Bourassa. Dylan is an eighth grader at South Middle School. He is the kind of kid that everyone likes. He’s athletic, involved in basketball and soccer. He’s funny, smart, kind, and friendly.

This summer, Dylan was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a form of bone cancer. Very quickly, the family was faced with a tough recommendation.

The best treatment for Dylan involved chemotherapy and an amputation of his lower left leg.

This amazing young man and his strong, loving family dove right in. Dylan has been through numerous chemotherapy treatments. His lower left leg was amputated mid-September, and he began walking again the same day! Dylan, his parents, Dusty and Aranda, and his whole family have met each step of this journey with strength, humor, faith, honesty and love.

The Harrisburg Schools have been right there with him! Prior to Dylan’s big surgery, South Middle School celebrated him with a flash mob dance, color-coordinated pictures and a beautiful tribute from fellow cancerfighter, Mrs. Randi VanDerSloot.

Harrisburg South Middle School is all about student voice and choice! We’ve seen this in so many ways, from our Genius Hour projects last year to our new Personalized Learning program in sixth grade. Across classrooms and grade levels, teachers provide students with options to show their learning. What do we want students to gain from this? A love of learning, a freedom to pursue their passions and problem-solving skills that can be applied to daily life.

Learners at South Middle School this year will be utilizing a learning management system called Buzz. On Buzz learners can keep track of work and assignments they need to complete. Parents/guardians can also access an observer account to view the work their child is completing and to see teacher feedback provided on that work. Please check out the Connect page on the SMS website for more information on how parents/ guardians can access Buzz. Information sessions on Buzz will also be held during conferences on October 6 to help parents/guardians become All of these things were evident late last year more familiar with the program and to answer any questions. when students Emma, Kayden and Jessalyn came to the school counseling office with a plan to help prevent and address bullying. They came loaded with catchy slogans and an idea… bracelets! Everyone loves a free bracelet. Why not use this medium to address a common concern in school, bullying? Through various planning sessions, the girls explored bracelet designs and costs, they surveyed students to find the best slogan, and they dreamed of ways to help others through their campaign in the fall.

So far, the students have helped present anti-bullying lessons to 118 sixth graders! Lessons have included a video (created by Emma, Kayden and Jessalyn), info on how to handle bullying and what to do if you see it happening. The lesson also worked to promote empathy, caring about others, and seeing our school as an extended family. The lesson ended with positive pledges and of course, bracelets. The bracelets boast the following slogans “Show Your Tiger Pride – Stand Up to Bullying” and “It’s not BIG to make someone feel small”.

We can’t wait to see what’s next for these three students and their big ideas!

Meet The New Assistant Principal Greetings, I am the new assistant principal at South Middle School (SMS).

My name is Brad Hartzler, and I have been with the district for the last five years. Before my arrival at SMS, I taught at seventh-grade English at North Middle School and served our school district in a multitude of other roles. There are many noteworthy things happening at SMS—and I would welcome you to come and check them out.

South Middle School (SMS) prides itself upon the learning opportunities and avenues it offers its students. From hands-on activities in their regionally recognized Makerspace to the ability for students to have a voice and choice in their learning through their classroom experience, student learning is being supported by the school.

To better enhance student education—and support parents at home— SMS offers just as many academic supports using such programs as ICU homework completion, Power Hour, and Saturday School. These programs are in place, so every student is held accountable for his or her learning,

Team Innovate JOE KLUMPER It has been a journey long in the making. It started as philosophy shift, rethinking educational systems and recognizing flaws. We were building factory workers in an age of disappearing factories.

Students needed to leave high school just like their classmates several decades ago because the work they would do required them to rarely think outside the box, create new things and challenge existing ideas. For quite some time the real-world has rewarded those who do those things, but our schools continued churning out the

One particular program I would like to highlight is morning and afternoon Power Hour. At SMS, we offer time from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. to aid in homework completion—which very few students are currently taking advantage. Our afternoon session has teachers, and often me, available to help students finish their homework before going home. Many students have found the time beneficial, having noted the lessening of stress at home.

I look forward to meeting many of you in the community soon. We have great things going on SMS, and we would love to partner with you and your student to help make this year life-changing.

We wondered if we were alone in this. Quickly we found our answer - no, we were not. Many schools around the country, and world, have been shifting their philosophies and putting those shifts into action. Communication, observations and a lot of learning of best-practice went into preparing for a leap into personalized learning. The next step was changing the physical layout of our environment. With learners in mind, the arrangement, norms and structure of every inch space was changed to accommodate different instruction and learning styles. The second phase of the journey was the setup.

For quite a while we taught to the middle. The slower learners were left confused and behind, zapping most of their drive to continue. Students who were self-driven and motivated, well they usually got bored and disinterested. Personalized learning was a perfect solution to trying to benefit all learners, no matter where they are in their own learning journey.

Maybe we don’t know exactly what we’re teaching tomorrow, but if a learner requests something it might be a good idea to give when they need. Helping them advocate for themselves and become selfaware has been an important piece of training. We may not be allowed the opportunity to pace a week or month like we used to, but learners taking ownership of their learning is a payoff ten-fold.

So, we have begun. There is already a Google Doc we used to write about things we want to do differently next year, but for the most part it has been a good start. Learners worked together to establish their own norms and expectations for each space. Learners create their own schedule for their day based on their needs. Learners prioritize their time and what teachers offer. Learners are doing things with their learning, not just returning a few memorized facts to their teachers when test day comes. Learners listen to music, lay on the floor, hangout with their friends and laugh. Learners are being allowed to be themselves and experience freedoms many of us teachers did not feel until we left the nest for college.

Harrisburg Girls Head To Oklahoma City The Bartlett Basketball Academy’s BBA Fierce 6th Grade Girls recently competed in the MAYB National Tournament held Aug 5-7 in Oklahoma City. The Fierce finished very strong in their pool, competing against teams from Texas, Arizona and Oklahoma. They scored an average of 53 points per game while allowing just an average of 13 points per game. The team advanced to the upper, single elimination bracket, winning an exciting first round 44 to 42 against a team from Missouri. During second round BBA Fierce lost to the eventual Champions, the OK Swish Blue from Oklahoma City. Bartlett Basketball Academy is located in Sioux Falls, SD and hosts competitive boy’s and girl’s summer and winter teams from grades 4th through high school, as well as various basketball performance programs and individual workouts for all ages.

There may be things to improve and change next time, but Team Innovate is putting learning into the hands of learners. Sure, they may be a younger and little smaller than us, but they are people. It is amazing to see what impact can happen when treating learners like the individuals they are.

Journey Elementary On Tuesday, September 20th the Fourth Grade sections at Journey Elementary had the opportunity to listen to special guest speakers Paavo Rasmussen and Jill Van Veldhuizen from the The Old Courthouse Museum. In Social Studies lessons prior to the event students were taught about how America’s rich resources had brought several Europeans to North America during the early 1500s. Along with the resources, the Fourth grade classes discussed how people in the early 1800s began bartering, and later moved to trading for the good or service they needed or wanted.

The artifact show-and-tell brought to life exactly what the classes had learned about a week prior. With over 1,000 artifacts in their collection, Paavo and Jill did a great job of selecting items that correlated with what the students had learned. They brought such items as: fur pelts, fur hats, and coins. Those items and more were what the early Europeans and Natives used to barter and trade. The museum did a wonderful job of bringing history to life in the classroom through their artifact show-and-tell program. Scrabble Fun MRS. BETH WELLS, JOURNEY LIBRARIAN This year, Journey Elementary Students have a Scrabble Theme for Library. To start off the year, we had Scrabble board games out for Open House night so students could play a game or a word with a friend or a parent.

Decorations are Scrabble- related, too, with a Scrabble Bulletin Board, window decorations, and even art prints. I hope this encourages a love of words, which make up our favorite stories!

We studied artist Javier Perez, who has created some Scrabble animals by using the letters that make up the animal plus a few simple sketched additions of whiskers, feet, or antennae. Students were then able to draw their own Scrabble animal or object. We had some wonderfully creative ones such as an eagle, a mushroom, a taxi, a bus, a shovel, and even teeth!

We also each made our own Scrabble cardstock “tile” using a stencil to trace the first initial in our name, coloring that in, and then writing a hope, dream, or goal for library this year on the back. Some students wished for certain books they hope our library acquires this year, others challenged themselves to read a series of books, and many set a goal of completing our school monthly reading challenge set up by our new principal, Mr. Sylliaasen.

I love to run, golf, bake, and do Pinterest DIY projects.

I grew up in Onalaska, Wisconsin.

What is your favorite weekend activity?

My favorite weekend activity would be anything involving the outdoors.

What is something about you that most people don’t know?

I have never eaten a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (I don’t have allergies to peanut butter!)

Calie Dalton – 4th Grade

Where did you go to college?

Augustana College Have you taught other grades before?

I worked at Washington High School for 3 Years running an intervention program and teaching various classes. I loved it there, but I have always wanted to try elementary.

What is some of your personal background?

I have been married to my husband Jordan since August of 2014. We have an awesome dog named Martin.

What are your hobbies?

I love to read, travel, go on walks, spend time at coffee shops, and play board games.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Montevideo, Minnesota.

What is your favorite weekend activity?

Sleeping and making coffee.

What is something about you that most people don’t know?

I have severe stage fright unless I’m playing sports.

Joyce Hurley – Administrative Assistant

What is some of your personal background? I am married. I have three daughters, two are married and one is getting married next year. I have two granddaughters that live in California.

What are your hobbies?

I like to ride bike and gardening.

Where did you grow up?

Sioux Falls What is your favorite weekend activity?

Having family come over for meals.

Name one thing about yourself that most people don’t know?

I have skydived only once and that was enough!

Julie Sandine – 5th Grade

Where did you go to college?

I went to the University of Northern Iowa for my B.A and then went to the University of South Dakota for my M.A. Have you taught any other grades?

Yes, I previously taught Early Childhood Special Education at Brandon Valley Schools. My family and I just built a new home off of HWY 11 and moved in this summer. I wanted to be closer to my work and to also be a part of the same district as my kids for the future.

Could you give some personal background?

My husband, Ross and I will be married for 5 years this October. We have two kids; my son, Kaeson is 3½ years old and my daughter, Bralieann is 20 months old. We also have two dogs; a husky named Aspen and a yellow lab named Gage.

Along with the pet parade we have a Siamese cat named, Leia.

What are your hobbies?

I enjoy running. I was born and raised in a running family, so when I have some spare time, this is what I like to do. Other than that, I enjoy scrapbooking, shopping and playing with my

Liberty Reading ANGI CABLE; LIBERTY READING SPECIALIST Harrisburg is fortunate to have so many programs to benefit each and every child. In the Harrisburg Elementary Schools, each building has access to a Reading Specialist to help students in the area of reading.

Assessments are given to help determine which students would benefit from additional support.

During the first weeks of school, all Kindergarten through 2nd grade students take part in a universal screening called DIBELS. Each child performs a few tests, which help to determine which students might benefit from additional interventions in reading.

Harrisburg also uses the Developmental Reading Assessments (DRA) K-5.

These assessments are conducted during one-on-one reading conferences with the student’s teacher. The DRA indicators and descriptors help look at each specific area of reading: oral reading fluency (expression, phrasing, rate, accuracy) and comprehension (prediction, summarizing, vocabulary, interpretation, reflection and connections). Students need to score ‘independent’ in all of the above areas before students may move up in level difficulty.

Before becoming a teacher, I wanted to be a Forest Ranger in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

One purpose of these assessments is to nurture strong foundational skills, building student’s confidence and providing students with practice to apply reading strategies and skills. The more practice students have in using and applying these skills, figuring out unknown words can and will become automatic. That is our goal!!

Parents are the most important person in a child’s life when it comes to learning to read. Parents modeling reading at home, reading together, and showing enjoyment when reading can make a huge impact on children. We encourage parents to make connections or reflect on the text when reading with their child as this practice helps children retain information and better understand what they are reading.

Another great thing about Liberty Elementary is our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). Our PTO has graciously given money to supplement our reading program with leveled books that are perfect for students to practice automatically and fluency, as well as comprehension. A wide variety of children’s books are available and accessible for teachers to utilize and provide a literacy rich environment for our students at Harrisburg.
