The library would like to thank everyone who popped in for a special treat to celebrate Library Appreciation Week. May will be another busy month for the Library with several special events. First, be watching for our Pot A What: Open House, Food, Fun and Entertainment Planter event May 14 at 10am. Bring a planter and your green thumb as we learn how to plant the perfect planter. Kids are welcome to tag along.

Harrisburg Water Restrictions MARY MCCLUNG City of Harrisburg Water Restrictions are in effect year round. Watering restrictions apply to the sprinkling, watering, or irrigating of lawns. Trees, shrubs, flower and vegetable gardens may be watered as needed.

These restrictions are strictly enforced and failure to abide by them will result in up to a $200.00 fine.

Currently we are at a Level 2 Restriction which limits watering or irrigating of yards to 2 days per week using the last digit of your physical address. Water use shall occur before 10:00 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m.

Lawn Mowing Season Has Returned!

MICHAEL MCMAHON Spring has sprung and the grass is starting to grow like crazy! Please keep your lawn mowed and the weeds pulled or sprayed. Remember that you are responsible to mow and maintain the boulevard or ditch area between your yard and the adjacent street driving surface. We issue tall grass violation notices when grass exceeds eight inches in height. This can result in the issuance of a citation for a $150 fine and/or abatement of the nuisance at your expense (and abatements are very expensive). We also issue violation notices for concentrations of weeds and noxious weeds.

To establish a new lawn only, watering permits are available for a one-time, 30 day period. The permit is $25.00 and can be obtained from City Hall.

Allowed at this site are branches, grass clippings, and leaves. No plastic bags or garbage, this has become a huge problem so please no plastic bags!

Absolutely NO other materials! THIS IS NOT A DUMP SITE and those caught dumping would be in violation and turned over to the authorities.

Slow Down In Town Warmer weather is here! This means families are ready to get out of the house and enjoy the weather by taking walks, riding bikes, playing in their yards, etc.

Please slow down while driving through residential streets, speed limit is 20 mph. Be aware and SLOWER IS SAFER!

FAQ About Residential Speed Control Speeding on residential streets is probably the most persistent problem facing residents and traffic officers. Residents observe vehicles being driven at speeds they perceive as too fast and often propose solutions that simply won’t reduce speeds or that create other traffic safety problems.

Can we have stop signs to slow down cars?

Studies show that three things happen when stop signs are installed solely to reduce speeds: 1. Vehicle speeds are only reduced within about 150 feet of each side of the stop sign.

2. Very few drivers actually come to a full stop for these signs.

3. Vehicle speeds often increase between stop signs. Therefore, stop signs are not always the desirable solution to reduce speed.

There are many children on our street. How can we keep them safe from speeders?

Children should never play in the street. When children are old enough to cross streets parents should teach them the hazards involved and the

proper, safe way to cross.

Why can’t we get the police to ticket the speeders on our street? You can, but they need your help. When you notice a speeder, make note of the time, location, vehicle (make, model, year, color, license number) and driver (size, age, sex). Pass this information on to the sheriff’s department.

Can we get speed bumps installed on our street to slow down vehicles?

The purpose of speed bumps is to make drivers so uncomfortable going over them that they will slow down. Tests show that the comfort level varies with the height and width of the bump and the speed of the vehicle.

Going over some bumps at higher speeds can actually make the ride smoother. This, of course, defeats the purpose. Traveling over speed bumps at any speed can cause major mechanical or maintenance problems to any vehicle, especially school buses and delivery trucks. Bumps can also increase response time for fire, police and ambulances, cause accidents for bicyclists and motorcyclists, and be an attractive hazard for skate boarders.

What is the best way to improve the safety on our streets?

Studies show that most traffic law violators are residents of the neighborhood. These drivers can be reached through neighborhood association newsletters, PTA meetings and social gatherings. Safety can also be improved by asking neighbors not to park cars in the street, if possible. This increases the drivers’ sight distance and decreases the chance of children darting into the street from between parked cars.

Volunteerism Pays Off For Harrisburg Activities Tiger Nation is proud to announce we are distributing a total of $30,000 split between each of the extra curricular groups who presented their requests at the April 20th Tiger Nation meeting. Boys and Girls Tennis, DECA, Track and Field, Cheer, Drama Club, Tiger Robotics, Football, Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball, HOSA, Debate, Volleyball, Baseball, Wrestling, Softball and Boys Soccer all requested funds and the booster club delivered. Those groups who had the largest number of parent and student volunteerism, attendance at monthly meetings, and involvement in fundraising were granted their full requests. Tiger Nation’s numerous fundraisers, Fine Arts and Sports Banquet, Tiger Bowl, Prairie Christmas, upcoming South Dakota Youth Track and Field Championship Meet and Golf Outing all offer opportunities for students and parents to volunteer their time and thus later MARY MCCLUNG reap the financial benefit. The City and Sheriff’s Department receive many complaints of barking dogs. These cases may be considered a disturbance of the peace by animals. Please take necessary steps to prevent this to avoid being fined.

Disturbing the Peace. It shall be deemed a violation of these regulations for any person owning or possessing any animal to suffer or permit such animal to disturb the peace and quiet of the neighborhood by barking, howling, crowing, crying, or making other loud or unusual noises. It shall be the duty of any person in possession of any such animal which disturbs the peace and quiet to dispose of the disturbance even if disposing of the animal is the only effective means. In the event that an animal is making any noise to disturb the peace and quiet of a neighborhood and the person owning or having the care or custody or control over the animal cannot be found to remedy the disturbance or, if found, refuses or fails to remedy the disturbance, then the animal may be impounded.

ANIMAL EXCRETA - Anyone walking an animal on public or private property other than his own must carry with him visible means of cleaning up any excreta left by the animal. The fine for not promptly removing and properly disposing any excreta is $50.00.

Harrisburg FFA State Convention TODD MARKS, FFA ADVISOR On April 10-12, the Harrisburg FFA and advisors Todd Marks and Tara Fastert traveled to SDSU for the 88th South Dakota State FFA Convention and returned home from the most successful convention in chapter history.

Senior FFA member, Nathan Harmer was selected as one of the 2016-2017 State FFA Ambassadors. The State Ambassadors help promote FFA throughout the state and assist the state officers with summer leadership retreats, managing the FFA animal nursery at the SD State Fair, assist with the state leadership CDE’s in Pierre, and help with the planning and operation of the 2017 State FFA Convention. Samantha Peterson, another senior member, was named one of the four state finalists for the honor of Star State Agribuisnessman. Samantha received this honor for starting her own business, “Samantha’s Pet Care” where she provides pet care for people on vacation. Samantha was presented with a plaque and $50 for being named a finalist. Samantha and chapter president Ben Ostebee also each received a $750 FFA scholarship for their outstanding participation in the FFA. FFA members also competed in the State CDE events at the convention.

The top three teams in each event are recognized on stage and Harrisburg had four teams be recognized! The Milk Quality team of Alyvia Ahnberg, Connor McAllister, Chase Jensen, and Marianne Bishop placed first and will advance to the National CDE Finals in Indianapolis in October. Individually, Alyvia placed 6th, Chase was 2nd, and Connor was the first place individual in the entire CDE. Harrisburg’s Agronomy team also emerged as the State Champions and will advance to the national CDE’s this fall. Team members included Nolan Hoback, Cassidy Rippentrop, Brady Samuelson, and Regan Yseth. Hoback,

Rippentrop, and Samuelson were all in the top 10 individuals and placed 2nd, 6th, and 9th respectively.

The Nursery/Landscape team of Austin Harris, Sydney Gibson, Grant Paulsen, and Grace Aasheim were the state runner-up team placing second overall. Paulsen placed 10th, Gibson 8th and Austin Harris was the high point individual and received a Stihl chainsaw as his prize.

The Food Science team was the final Harrisburg CDE team to be recognized at the state convention. Food Science placed 3rd and team members are Nicole Hudson, Noah Hovorka, Myckenzie Kuchar, and Sydney Wood.

The Harrisburg Chapter also had several individual members receive state recognition for their achievements. Seniors Alyvia Ahnberg, Sydney Gibson, Kandice Larson-Heathcote, Samantha Peterson, Sawyer Strand, Ben Ostebee, Nathan Harmer, and Grant Paulsen all received their State FFA Degrees. The State Degree is the equivalent of an All-State honor and is based on the student’s involvement and commitment to the FFA throughout high school.

Mr. Marks and Ms. Fastert would like to thank Cody Mayo for attending the convention with us as a chaperone and helper. Cody has assisted us greatly this year in the classroom and at CDE’s and we could not have gotten along without her! We would also like to thank Danny Harris, Roger Timmerman, and Mike Holm for being our bus drivers and for all of their support throughout the year. We would also like to thank Marissa Edwards for coaching the livestock CDE team and providing help with many FFA projects this past year. Also, a special thank you to all the parents who helped with CDE’s, fundraising, attending the state convention, and other FFA events. Thank you for allowing us to work with your children and we appreciate your continued support.

Cheer Leads The Way EVE BECKER Sideline cheer at Harrisburg High School is an activity that has gained momentum and participation in the past 2 years. Try-outs were held on April 23 for the 2016-2017 school year, and 27 individuals in grades 8-11 were vying for spots on the team. This number is up from past years, and cheerleaders are excited for the increase. Freshman Michaela Heyn, who has experience as a JV football and basketball cheerleader stated, “There are a lot more eighth graders trying out, which is nice to have young new talent join the program.”

Try-outs were for all sports, which includes varsity and JV football, wrestling, and basketball. Candidates practiced each day after school the week leading up to the try-out and learned cheer material ranging from stunts, jumps, cheers, and a dance. Results were posted at the high school and middle schools the following Monday, and the girls were waiting in eager anticipation to see what squad they would be a part of.

The season will begin this spring as the cheerleaders will fundraise to help offset expenses such as a summer camp, which will be instructed by members of the SDSU cheer team. During camp, cheerleaders will learn a routine that will be performed during the Homecoming football game. Fall football kicks off in August and highlights of the season include Tiger Bowl, Think Pink week, and of course, Homecoming.

Winter cheerleading is split into 2 teams to support the athletes in wrestling and basketball. As the squads in the winter are made up of a fewer members, it is a great opportunity to make new friends and be involved.

Junior Katelin Johnson tried out for wrestling cheerleading for the first time this year. “I’m looking forward to building new relationships with the other cheerleaders and the athletes I will be supporting,” Johnson said.

As the team grows, so does the talent and skills the cheerleaders are able to do. Last year’s cheerleaders learned all new sideline material, perfected several new elite stunts, purchased new uniforms and poms, donated over $400 to The Edith Sanford Breast Center, hosted a cheer camp with over 100 elementary students, and worked to become more involved throughout the high school and community. The team hopes to continue this success and looks forward to another exciting season ahead. Congratulations to the 2016-2017 cheerleaders.

Kindness Initiative Led By Local Harrisburg Seniors PHIL OLSON FROM CHARACTER ON TRACK Four Harrisburg High School seniors, Kain Kittelson, Brody Mouw, Allison Meyer and Sydney Fikse spent part of their afternoon on April 1st with the 2nd -5th graders from Harrisburg Endeavor Elementary talking about the importance of kindness. They delivered their message through Character on Track, a new program, which delivers character education to elementary and middle schools throughout the region. The seniors were part of a core group of one hundred forty additional seniors from forty-six high schools across S.E. South Dakota and NW Iowa who are all sharing a common message, Kindness Matters!

The Harrisburg seniors offered some heartfelt advice during their assembly.

Kittleson told the students, “I think its really important to stand up for yourself and do what you believe is the right thing to do.” Fikse said, “I think it is important to care about others, especially those less fortunate who may need our help.” She then told the youngsters about her great experience helping with Special Olympics. Brody Mouw added, “I think it’s really important to say Thank You to someone when they do something for us.” He then asked the students how many of them thought to thank their bus driver that morning or perhaps the cooks from school. He added, “Sounds easy, but let’s face it, that doesn’t always happen.”

Allison Meyer commented, “I think it’s important to do what you are supposed to do and do what you say you will do.” She suggested that school projects and homework should not be delayed and when your parents ask you to perform a task, you should get it done without complaining During their visit, each elementary and middle school student was presented with a kindness token. The four seniors then encouraged students to complete at least one act of random kindness in school, at home, or in the community.

The Kindness Initiative message has been delivered by local seniors of character to more than 10,000 students across the region. The idea was shared that, If each local student does something good for another person, and then they pass it on, and the next person passes it on, and it keeps going, we will soon reach hundreds of people in our community.”

Finally, these four seniors wanted the younger students to know that they all have to power to change the world, starting in Harrisburg South Dakota, with one kind act of kindness at a time.

HOSA Happenings KAY BASS & ANGELA WACHAL On March 31st and April 1st, Harrisburg H O S A members traveled to the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, SD to compete at the South D a k o t a HOSA State Leadership Conference.

Harrisburg HOSA had 86 members compete in various events.

Our students were well prepared; 40 students placed in the top 3 for their event and qualified to compete at the HOSA International Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee this summer June 22nd-25th.

We look forward to competing with the finest competitors across the world!

In addition to our completive event qualifiers, Harrisburg HOSA will be well represented on the South Dakota HOSA State Officer board for the 2016/17 school year. Marisa Morris served as our South Dakota President-Elect this past year and was installed as our South Dakota HOSA President. Kelsi Snyder and Noah Petersen interviewed and were selected to serve on the state officer board. Kelsi Snyder was elected as President-Elect and will serve as president

Double Trouble SAM CLAYBORNE HHS tennis, the newest sport in our district, has recently started its season. According to Matt Termansen, the head tennis coach, a challenge he has faced starting a new program is inexperienced players, but he says, “that it’s nice to teach them the fundamentals and watch them improve.”

There are 7 boys on the varsity team and 11 on junior varsity; their team captain is senior, Ben Ostebee.

Of course, since they are a new sport to the school, there is always room for improvement, “I love the facilities we have been given. I would love to improve them by getting trees planted around them and creating a wind block. Our goal is to improve after every match and to be more competitive,” says Coach Termansen. Ultimately, Termansen says that he is most proud of taking part in a new program, “It also has many challenges, but it is great to watch the kids get excited about tennis. They are all improving and it is going to be fun seeing how much better our teams will get.”

On Saturday, April 2, at 4 o’clock PM, the Harrisburg High School Choir teamed up with the North Middle School Choir to put on a concert for parents at the Washington Pavilion.

The middle school students sang first and did an amazing job. They performed five songs total from an acapella piece, a different language piece, and an instrumental piece. After the middle schoolers went, The HHS Track team currently has several the audience was informed that the Harrisburg Fine Arts provisional qualifiers for the state track meet. Erin Program had decided to assign a director to the program, Kinney automatically qualified for state in the Dr. Kip McKee. With this position, we are able to raise more 100 and 200 meter dash. Sarah Westerman has money for the music boosters, which will go to funding provisionally qualified in both events, along with for new instruments and trips. Once the high schoolers Jordan Wurth and Kylie Larson in the 200. reached the stage, they sang a total of seven songs. The women’s choir went first singing, “Music Spread Thy Voice Around, and I Jordan has provisionally qualified in the 400 meter as well. Normally, the High School Choir students put on two concerts a year: Prairie Christmas and the spring concert. Now that we have more of an opportunity, we are not only putting on two shows for our parents but also performing in two more shows at the Pavilion. The choir teacher, Mrs. Gould, said, “The Pavilion is such a great place to perform because of how well the acoustics are carried through out the whole room.”

On the boys’ side Paul Paul is leading the state qualifiers with the best time in the 100, 200, and 400 meter races. Jack Anderson joins him with provisional qualifying times in the 100 and 200 as well as the long jump.

Kyle Hill and Conner Erickson have met the provisional mark in the long jump, with Connor provisionally qualifying in the high jump as well. Nolan Hoback has provisionally qualified‚ in the pole vault. Matt Pohlmann has provisionally qualified‚ in the 110 meter hurdles, and Sawyer Strand has met the mark in the discus throw. Well done athletes!

To sing and to perform is an awesome opportunity for both the singers and the parents. After the show was done, many choir students stayed to watch the band’s performance, which was at seven o’clock. According MIA CHERRY to Mariah Spotanske, a choir member, “The concert was really good.

Everyone sang with their hearts, and we put on a great show.” Overall the concert was an impactful experience for all in attendance.

HHS Girls Basketball Takes Fourth

A Team Striving For Their Goals TAREK NOUR With one high school soccer season complete and another one on the horizon, the Harrisburg Tigers are looking to have their best year yet in the AA class. Although they haven’t acquired their stand out season, Ms. Kayla Braffet is very excited for the next year to come. In the new season she is, “Looking forward to trying out a new formation.” Ms. Braffet, the head coach, mentioned that the team has, “mastered a 4-3-3 (formation); however, with the players we have returning next year, I feel switching up the formation will enhance our team’s strengths the most.”

I also asked the eighth grade ELA teacher and coach whether or not she thinks that the Harrisburg boys’ soccer team will be able to compete with the big-name schools like Sioux Falls Lincoln and Aberdeen Central. She responded with an affirmative, “Yes, we have the talent. As soon as the boys realize their potential as a team and put forth the amount of effort on and off the field, we will be competing against every school.” The Tigers appear to have a very promising season in their future; although, they have never made it to the AA class state tournament, the Tigers seem to have a very promising season in their future where they hope to go all the way.

With the winter sports coming to a close, the Harrisburg Girls Basketball team finished on a high note. The state tournament is always an exciting time for girls basketball. This year the Harrisburg girls ended up placing 4th in the state tournament. To prepare for the state tournament Coach Mayer, the head coach of the Harrisburg girls basketball, said “It was a little different preparing for state this year since we had a week and a half from when we qualified to when it actually started. As we got ready for state we made sure that we watched film on our first round opponent (Rapid City Central) and tried to prepare for them the best we could. Along with that preparation, we also had to make sure we worked on what we could control. We went through all of our materials and made sure that they were ready to go for game time.” In the regular season the girls ended with nine wins.

According to coach Mayer, the biggest challenge of the regular season was “trying to become the 3rd seed in our district. We had to win our last 7 games to edge out Brandon Valley. We actually won our last 9 regular season games. On the board, after each win, we put the number of games we had to win to get the 3 seed; it was sort of a goal. It was fun watching our kids take it upon themselves to set a goal and finish the regular season strong.” Until the next season, the Harrisburg girls will continue in other sports and activities throughout; however, they will still be preparing for next season. “We start with getting our summer stuff ready and go from there.

At the end of the season I like to sit and reflect on what a fun year it was, everything our kids accomplished, and how well they came together as a team. After we have our awards banquet, I start to think a little bit more about next season.”

American Sign Language CAM BERNDT There are many people in the United States that are deaf or hard of hearing. Approximately 2 million people in the United States cannot understand normal speech; around 500,000 are in the deaf community. The ASL teacher at Harrisburg High School, Ms. Stephanie Hovda, was introduced to sign at a young age. Ms. Hovda has been around ASL since 5th grade, her Sunday school teacher knew sign language because his wife was deaf. “It is important to learn ASL in order to communicate with the deaf community because it’s a very secluded world without being able to communicate with anyone you want,” Ms. Hovda stated. She believes ASL is a fabulous benefit to have in a work environment. When she was a director at a gymnastics camp called Lake Owen in northern WI, she spoke to a mother who wanted her daughter to come to camp, but she was deaf with hearing aids. The mother was worried that there would be nobody who would know how to take care of her. Ms. Hovda stated, “You’re in luck!” Therefore, her daughter was able to come to the camp. She thinks deaf students appreciate it when the hearing students are encouraged and interested to learn how to communicate with them.

At the high school ASL 1 and ASL 2 are offered for foreign languages; in ASL 1 students go over vocabulary, sentence structure, and also background on ASL history. To practice skills and review, students learn how to sign children’s books and read them in front of the class. Sometimes deaf students come in to teach and communicate. The class has had deaf or hard of hearing people from around the community come to watch and see them sign. The class also has planned to go to Augustana University to perform. On April 29th, at Augustana University the students performed the song Toward The Sun by Rihanna. The ASL 1 class has been working very hard since the beginning of March in preparation for this experience. ASL is a good language to know and understand to communicate with deaf students and people in the community.

A Colossal Season CODY SCHRIEVER

Back in February on the 16th, Harrisburg hosted a debate tournament called the Harrisburg Rushmore Challenge right before the National Qualifiers and state. The team overall did great winning 384 rounds this year, while losing only 168. Three teams are going nationals, which is more than ever before. There was a team that was runner-up at the state tournament and there were over 15 teams that received awards at least one tournament this season. Coach McKee believes that next year, “The team needs to do more individual events, specifically oratory, informative speaking, and extemporaneous speaking. We just did not compete in that enough this year. It will be a focus to get more kids doing

those events next year.” When the team went to National Qualifiers they crushed it with a 20-8 record, teams finished 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, and the top three spots. The fourth place team is the first alternate and has the chance to compete in World Schools Debate at Nationals. The only way that it could have gone better for the tournament, according to Coach McKee, would have been to beat O’Gorman’s top team – they finished first, and beat three of our teams at National Qualifiers, but a team did beat them at state in the semifinals. McKee is very excited for next season because, “Lots of great kids are returning, including four students that will compete at nationals this summer. We’ve got a solid group of coaches and a school that really supports our program. I can’t wait for next year to get here!” With a great season coming to end, and a lot to look forward to, it is impossible to make a rebuttal to the claim. The sun has not set on the Harrisburg Debate Program.

Harrisburg Debate Sends Seven To National Tournament The Harrisburg HS Debate team will send seven students to Salt Lake City in June to compete at the National Speech and Debate Association national tournament. Ben Menke became the latest Tiger to qualify by placing first in the Rushmore District student congress competition held at the State Capitol in Pierre April 8. He joins previously qualified teammates Lucas Davis, Jordann Krouse, Marisa Morris, Claire Tufty, Hayden Cole and Landon Dinger.

Seniors Davis and Krouse will pair up to compete in public forum debate after qualifying in February at the Rushmore District debate qualifying tournament. Morris and Tufty will also compete in public forum, while Cole and Dinger will team up with students from Yankton, Sioux Falls Roosevelt, and Sioux Falls Washington to compete in world schools competition. The world schools division will include not only students from across the US but also international teams from South Korea, Turkey, Peru, and others.

Senior Jordann Krouse received one of four Donus Roberts Outstanding Senior Public Forum Debater awards handed out during the Rushmore District student congress competition. Students are nominated and chosen by all schools that debate in South Dakota. Krouse competed for three years on the team and will compete at her second national tournament this summer. She won tournaments in policy, Lincoln Douglas, and public forum debate and amassed numerous awards for public address and oral interpretation as well. Jordann completed her last round of debate in style pairing with Davis to finish second at the SDHSAA State Debate Tournament last month. She becomes the fifth Harrisburg debater to receive the Roberts award, following the path of 2010 recipients Enrique Ortega and Richie Fiksdal and 2013 recipients Conner Monsees and Keren Kabambi.

Endeavor Elementary We’re Off To See The Wizard LISA M NORRIS Endeavor Elementary is participating in their very first “One Book One School” project. Every family at Endeavor Elementary received a copy of The Wizard Of Oz, compliments of the PTO. Each day the students listen to a different staff member read a chapter of the book. Students then go home to discuss and reread the chapter with their family. There are also new decorations and quotes going up week in the school halls weekly. They are celebrating and discussing a new theme each week, having a dress up day and also receiving some surprises along the way. A yellow brick road can be found leading to the Library, where the window display is all about The Wizard Of Oz. It has been a wonderful way to promote reading and also build the connection between the families and staff of our school. The entire school will watch the movie at the completion of the book. There is no place like home or Endeavor Elementary!

IGNITE And Augustana University Team Up LISA M NORRIS Students from Augustana University theatre department came to Endeavor Elementary to spend some quality time with the students in the IGNITE after school program. IGNITE is a group that works on improvisation, theatre and oral interpretation pieces. The Augustana students lead some improvisational games, taught the students about theatre, make up, performing, stage presence and costumes. The IGNITE students appreciated and enjoyed their time with the Augustana students.

IGNITE also ended their year with their oral interpretation competition. Most of the students received Superior or Excellent scores. The overall winners were: Jeremiah Hottmann -1st Place, Madeline Scott and Kaylen Harris tied for 2nd place, and Karalyn Leach received 3rd. All of the students did an LISA M NORRIS outstanding job! Mrs. Norris has seen so much growth in this group of kids.

The third annual Endeavor Elementary Extravaganza talent show was held They will all be wonderful additions to the Harrisburg Fine Arts programs. on March 22nd. There were 27 acts that performed for students, staff, families and the community. There were 40 acts that auditioned for the show. Each year the talent gets better and better. It is very impressive to see the number of students who audition and the talent they bring to the competition.

This year, third place went to Kaylen Harris and Rhiannen Heimdal with a funny and impressive Science routine. Second place was given to Adilyn Beker with a beautiful ballet dance. Winning the competition was fifth grader, Shelby DeSchepper with a very difficult piano solo. All students are encouraged to audition next year! Endeavor has talent!

Endeavor Elementary Extravaganza

Freedom Elementary Invention Convention MR. MUTH On Thursday, April 14, Mr. Muth’s 5th grade class held their annual Invention Convention. Students were encouraged to think of a problem and then a solution on either how to fix the problem, or improve upon something to make it more efficient.

It was a month- long process that involved brainstorming, journaling, diagramming, and then finally creating.

This year’s batch had a variety of inventions ranging from apps that help you plan parties to a “Creature Catcher” to help eliminate pesky rodents and even a closet that helps you pick out your outfit for the day according to your interests.

Some of our greatest inventions and ideas have come from someone thinking about how to do something different or better than how it’s been done before.

Transition To Middle School FREEDOM 5TH GRADE

Are there any things that you’re worried about going into middle school?

As the school year winds down, many 5th grade students are reflecting on their time in elementary, but also eagerly looking forward to the upcoming year in middle school. We sat down with a few outgoing 5th graders to see what they think about the upcoming transition.

“I am worried about forgetting what class I have next and forgetting my ID,” responded Ariana.

What will you miss most about elementary school?

“I will miss staying in one classroom,” said Alex.

“I will miss recess,” responded Cade.

What are looking forward to the most about middle school?

“Having more privileges,” said Cashton.

“I’m looking forward to meeting new people, making new friends, and meeting my new teachers,” said Ava.

“Getting to classes on time,” joked Zander.

What things will make you successful in middle school?

“Getting my assignments done on time,” said Kaitlynn.

“Being organized and staying on track,” stated Kaeli.

Freedom 5th graders will be attending a middle school transition day on May 11. They will get to see what a day looks like in the middle school and ask any questions. We are sad to see them go, but excited for their next step in their educational journey.

Liberty Elementary Liberty Student To The Castle Of Care JEN VAN’T HUL Liberty Student Council members took a trip to the Castle of Care. Student learned about the facility and services provided. They made donations including a large amount of teddy bears. Students and staff alike shared stories of how receiving a bear from the hospital had made such a big difference in a difficult situation. Pictured with the bears are the students who tagged the toys, preparing them for donation. Other students brought the bears and other donations to the Castle. Clearly there were many students who were committed to the project.

At Liberty Elementary, the fifth graders recently completed a 6-week program in their Guidance class that teaches them about the hazards and side effects of using drugs. During this program, they had a guest speaker, Deputy Johns from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department, who was able to join them and share real -life situations and consequences for using drugs.

Caleb (5S): (1) “I learned that alcohol, it can make you do bad decisions and it also messes with our mind and makes your vision blurry. (2) What “I Can” told me is that I’m probably not going to drink because it ruins your body. The center of your brain gets smaller because it ruins it and your brain will get all mushy because of the alcohol.”

We interviewed a couple students from each fifth grade class, and asked what was one thing that they learned from this program and how are they going to make sure they continue to make healthy lifestyle choices?

Miss Marohl: You recently completed the “I Can” Program, where you learned how to make healthy lifestyle choices and how to resist negative peer pressure. (1) What is one thing that you learned and (2) how are you going to use this knowledge to make healthy choices in the future, especially as you get older?

Gracen (5M): (1) “I learned that you can identify all your choices of what you can do and then pick the best one. (2) Like, when you grow up, if you are at the park and stuff starts going wrong, then you can stop and identify your choices and if they are all bad, then just leave.”

Max (5G): (1) “I learned to not use drugs, like cocaine. So you can stay alive and it keeps your heart healthy, and your lungs can breathe better.

You could cause trauma and your fingernails get yellow. (2) Help other people to not use drugs so that they can make their life better and they

Faith (5M): (1 & 2) “With bullying, you have to stand up for what is right even if you think they are going to do something, tell the teacher first.

The person being bullied can’t stand up for himself or herself because the bullies are threatening them, so they are afraid. If you see that, then you should stand up and tell a teacher.”

Halle (5G): (1) “I learned that if your friends are doing drugs, just back away and tell an adult. (2) If someone is trying to get me to do drugs, I can just tell them no.”

Monica (5S): “Alcohol is really bad for you and I know not to drink it because it can damage your brain. You will live a healthier lifestyle and not have to worry about your brain getting hurt by using alcohol.”

We’d like to thank Deputy Johns for making this program available to our students and for encouraging them to make grrrr-eat choices as they continue through middle and high school.
