Neighbors Helping Neighbors

The City of Harrisburg is contracted with the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society in Sioux Falls.

Any lost animals or animals in violation of city ordinances will be brought to SFAHS, (605) 338-4441.

Each Pet License Application shall be submitted with a license fee according to the following schedule: Neutered/spayed cat or dog: $ 5.00 Unneutered/ unsprayed cat or dog: $ 10.00. Licenses and tags may be obtained at City Hall.

It is a violation for any person who owns or who has under his care any animal to allow said animal to run at large. Any animal shall either be on a leash or tether controlled by a person, or properly secured to a leash which has been tied to an immovable object, or confined within an enclosure sufficient to keep said animal restrained from escaping such enclosure. The fine for an animal running at large is $100.00.

The City and Sheriff’s Department receive many complaints of barking dogs.

It is a violation of regulations for any person owning or possessing any animal to permit such animal to disturb the peace and quiet of the neighborhood by barking, howling, crowing, crying, or making other loud or unusual noises.

The person in charge with the care or control of any animal, shall remove and dispose of in a sanitary manner any excreta deposited by such animal upon said person’s property no less frequently than every three days and upon any public or other person’s private property immediately after excretion. Anyone walking an animal on public or private property other than his own must carry with him visible means of cleaning up any excreta left by the animal. The fine for not promptly removing and properly disposing any excreta is $50.00.

The Harrisburg Area Food Pantry is a faith based outreach serving Harrisburg and the surrounding area. Whether you’ve recently been downsized, are otherwise temporarily unemployed, or are experiencing economic challenges, we are here to help. You will need your Driver’s License, documentation showing you are from the Harrisburg area, or have children in the School District. You can also receive a referral from a school counselor or social worker. Any use of available resources will be held in the strictest of confidence.

We are located at 203 Prairie St in Harrisburg. Hours of operation are the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month from 4:00 – 7:00 pm and the 1st and 3rd Thursday from 10:00 – noon. In the event of a food emergency, we can be reached at (605) 929-0599 or (605) 767-2253.

Local Train Club To Host Train Show And Swap Meet TODD MARKS The Dakota Southeastern Division of the National Model Railroaders Association is hosting a train show and swap meet at the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds April 16 & 17. Several members of the club live in the Harrisburg school district and will be proudly displaying their model train layouts and displays. Many vendors around the area will be on hand to offer merchandise for sale and 10 railroad layouts will be on display for children and adults to enjoy.

Harrisburg High School Agricultural Education Teacher, Mr. Todd Marks, will have his 6’ x 18’ layout of antique and modern American Flyer trains on display. One of the unique aspects of Mr. Marks’ layout is that HHS students help him design, setup, and operate the layout at shows. Marks has been collecting and operating model trains for the past 15 years and became interested in the hobby when his father gave him the trains he had in storage for the past 35 years. After getting the trains cleaned and operational, Marks has expanded his collection to over 200 model engines and train cars.

From The HEDC/Chamber President: Let’s Do The Math ADRIENNE MCKEOWN, HEDC/CHAMBER PRESIDENT

CENSUS (Census who?)

Last month, the mayor announced that the City of Harrisburg has decided to hold a Special Census during the month of April. If you had a chance to read Mayor Julie Burke-Bowen’s article about the census, you know what this census could mean for our town.

Census will be coming to your door beginning April 8th!

As residents of Harrisburg, the very thought of us gaining additional funding for much needed improvements like streets, turning lanes, and stoplights should have us eagerly awaiting the arrival of the census taker and welcoming him or her with open arms. But if that’s not enough incentive to participate, let’s talk dollars—as in, economic development dollars that can be brought into our town as a result of this special census.

Let’s do the math. Assume we hit the 5,000 resident mark and we obtain the additional funding for these improvement projects. While the construction workers are in town completing these projects, they’re going to need to eat and gas up their vehicles. That’s money going back to our local business owners, and by extension, sales tax going back to the city.

Now let’s envision those nicer roads and less congested intersections that make it easier for people to come into town to do business and—at the same time—make it more enjoyable to live here. The more people that are living here and doing business here, the less of a burden each of us bears in footing the cost of future improvements. Additionally, in my research I found a study from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that suggests that “highway expenditures have been found to help increase rural employment,” and studies have also shown that “new highways tend to benefit rural counties near metro areas.” (Rural and near a metro area. Sounds a bit like Harrisburg, doesn’t it?) Add to that the reduced travel time and the increased safety gains, and it makes a pretty strong economical case for how important it is for us to participate in the special census. Bottom line, we can’t grow our economy if we can’t move our goods or our people. So make sure to be counted. The census will begin on April 8th.

Speaking of April, as the annual deadline to file your income tax return approaches, let’s do some more math about a different kind of tax— sales tax. As mentioned above, shopping local is a smart idea because it supports our local businesses. Local businesses mean local jobs.

But shopping local goes beyond supporting the businesses. It’s also about putting money back into your own community. When you shop in Harrisburg, the sales tax from your purchase goes back into the general fund to pay for the day-to-day operations of keeping the city running. In 2015, that sales tax equated to nearly $1 million.

Additionally, South Dakota allows cities to impose an additional one percent sales tax called a municipal gross receipts tax. This is commonly referred to as the bed, board, and booze (BBB) tax, as it can only be applied on purchases related to lodging, alcohol, eating establishments, and/or admissions. These funds are restricted and must be used for specific purposes which are generally associated with economic development.

Last year, Harrisburg brought in more than $32,000 from the BBB tax; that’s money that goes right back to funding Harrisburg’s future.

As the old adage goes, the numbers don’t lie, and these numbers make a pretty clear case for shopping local. Money spent here, stays here.

So first, make sure you are counted when the census worker knocks on your door this month. And secondly, please join me in shopping local whenever you can—not just during April, but all year long.

2015 Drinking Water Report Water Quality Last year, the City of Harrisburg monitored your drinking water for possible contaminants. This brochure is a snapshot of the quality of the water that we provided last year. Included are details about where your water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state standards. We are committed to providing you with information because informed customers are our best allies.

Water Source

We serve more than 4,300 customers an average of 290,000 gallons of water per day. Our water is groundwater that we purchase from another water system. The state has performed an assessment of our source water and they have determined that the relative susceptibility rating for the Harrisburg public water supply system is medium.

Additional Information

The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity.

Contaminants that may be present in source water include: Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife.

Inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally-occurring or result from urban stormwater runoff, industrial or domestic

wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming.

Pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses.

Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, urban stormwater runoff, and septic systems.

Radioactive contaminants, which can be naturally-occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities.

In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. FDA regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health.

Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population.

Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections.

These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/CDC

guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants can be obtained by calling the Environment Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing.

The City of Harrisburg public water supply system is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

The table below lists all the drinking water contaminants that we detected during the 2015 calendar year. The presence of these contaminants in the water does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. Unless otherwise noted, the data presented in this table is from testing done January 1 – December 31, 2015 The state requires us to monitor for certain contaminants less than once per year because the concentrations of these contaminants are not expected to vary significantly from year to year. Some of the data, though representative of the water quality, is more than one year old.

2016-2017 Fall Sports Meetings JOEY STRUWE, ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR This year we will be providing several opportunities to attend the 2016-17 Fall Parent/Student meeting in May. We are hoping that by having this meeting early everyone will be able to better plan summer activities and be ready for school activities come August. The meeting will cover such things as athletic physicals, concussion testing, registration and fall start dates. We will also have summer camp dates and brochures available as well as information about the summer Champions Program. This meeting will take the place of the large group meeting that we have done in August in previous years. The sport specific meetings with coaches will still take place in August prior to the start of practices.

There will be three meeting dates this spring, one at each middle school and the high school. The meeting times will be at 6:30 each night on May 4 at the high school PAC, May 17 at South Middle School gym and on May 23 at the North Middle School PAC. Parents and students in grades 6-11 (2015-16 school year) are encouraged to attend at the building where you are enrolled but may attend any of the three sites or dates.

TANYA RASMUSSEN As the title suggests, Murder’s in the Heir, a “who done it” murder mystery, is much like the game Clue, in which the audience has the opportunity to decide the guilty character. The show goes up in the Performing Arts Center at Harrisburg High School on Friday, April 8th, and Saturday, April 9th, at 7:00 PM with a Sunday matinée at 2:00 PM.

According to Mr. Michael Smith, theater instructor, HHS Drama is committed to giving its student actors and technicians educational experiences from across the spectrum that is theater. They produced the Disney hit, Beauty and the Beast, in the fall, explored Ancient Greek tragedy for the one act, and now bring the audience a staple of the theater, the one-room mystery. By exposing students to a wide range of theatrical genres, we are preparing our artists for life after high school.

Each year HHS programs shows that afford educational opportunities to broaden students’ experience, knowledge, and prospective.

The cast for Murder’s in the Heir features Maddie McElroy, Allison Meyer, Parker Brown, Ireland Nichols, Carter Jackson, Kailey Bechtold, Kyja Norris, Grace Boddicker, Styler Drey, Carmen Moir, Brooklyn Boyles, Alaina Ford, and Jacob Rumer. Mr. Smith says that his crew of over 20 students are working hard to bring this show to life. Costumes, props, sounds, and lighting are being created by the dedicated technicians.

We expect a great evening of theater, filled with suspense and laughter.

It is my pleasure, as a member of the Executive Board for School Administrators of South Dakota (SASD), to announce Mr. Ryan Rollinger and Dr. Kevin Lein have received the honor of being part of the National Dawn Hochsprung Memorial. SASD nominated Mr. Rollinger and Dr. Lein for the Dawn Hochsprung Tree of Life Memorial which honors principals who have made an extraordinary sacrifice during their career as an educator. The memorial is sponsored by NAESP and the tree features a trunk comprised of the interwoven bodies of children that leads to a large blossom of leaves. Each leaf is designed to bear the name of individuals who have been honored for their exceptional service and actions as a school leader. Harrisburg High School Prom 2016 KAITLIN REUER & CALLIE COOK Harrisburg High School Prom will be held Saturday, April 30th, 2016. Grand March is open to the public to see the prom attendees in their dresses and tuxedos. Grand March starts at 7:30pm and will be held in the Harrisburg High School gymnasium.

If you are coming to take pictures, we advise you come early because spots fill up quickly.

The gym will be decorated according to the 2016 prom theme: Out of This World, is a space based theme involving planets, stars, astronauts, and aliens. We ask that you do not touch the decorations in the commons and gymnasium while waiting for Grand March to start. Junior students spend a lot of time planning, making, and setting up these decorations.

can converse and take pictures with students and other attendees in the commons until the dance begins at 8:30pm; then all community members will be asked to leave. During the dance there will be a DJ playing music for the students’ enjoyment. The dance lasts for three hours. At 11:30pm students are asked to leave to go to After Prom, if they desire.

After Prom starts at midnight at Harrisburg North Middle School; it is only open to students who are Harrisburg juniors and seniors or students who have been asked to prom by the Harrisburg upperclassmen. The doors open at 11pm for students who choose to leave the dance early and they close at 12am; no exceptions for students who arrive after this time. These students will have to be signed up on the list put in the High School office starting March 14th-April 1st.

Harrisburg students will also be expected to pay $50 to the After Prom Committee before April 1st, unless they have talked to Sarah Roth (376-1653) or Sarah Nichols (214-1093) for a different payment plan. Out of school students are expected to pay $25 by this time or have

their date pay it for them. The money for anyone attending who has not yet paid can be turned into the office or mailed to HHS. Once all students are in the doors at after prom, they will have an option to play an abundance of different games and win paper money throughout the night. Food will be provided for students at after prom from all corners of the United States. Later in the night, students will have a hypnotist to entertain them and have a break from the games and activities. There are also options for students to watch movies and to take pictures in a photo-booth. Towards the end of after prom, students cash in their money.

The top winners get to pick prizes first, but all participants get prizes. Big prizes include futons, mini fridges, TVs, Keurig coffee machines, cash, gift cards, etc. Then once prizes are done after prom will come to a conclusion at 5am on May 1st.

Prom: Ready To Launch CLAIRE MCDOWELL As prom approaches and becomes a hot topic for conversation around the halls of Harrisburg High, I sat down with Mrs. Katie Keppen, one head of the prom planning committee, and asked her some questions about plans for this year’s prom. Mrs. Keppen talked to me about the different factors going into prom planning, like the budgeting, funds, the theme, and décor.

The theme that the prom planning committee decided on for this year is an outer space theme, called Out of This World. When I asked what ideas for prom décor they have come up with, Mrs. Keppen answered that they plan to have a lot of balloon decorations, planets (including a moon), astronauts, aliens, rockets, etc. This year’s prom budget, roughly the same as last year’s, is around $5,500. explained to me how they get that money to pay for prom; the prom committee, which is made up of members of the junior class, raises money to fund prom by either selling magazines or paying $30 each.

I also asked Callie Cook, one active member in the prom planning committee, what the goal or hopes are for prom this year. She said, “We hope to not disappoint prom goers and to make prom a fun experience for all.” They are also trying to advocate for Grand March to stay scheduled for the evening, just before the dance.

The theme for after-prom was not discussed, as the committee of parents for planning the event determines that. After talking to Mrs. Keppen and the prom committee, I am happy to say that the Harrisburg High School students have a lot to look forward to for this year’s big event.

Fling Into Spring BRYLEE HARRIS Spring Fling is a week in March, very similar to homecoming, that allows students and teachers to participate in dress-up days to help get into the spring spirit. Adam Schorzmann, a student council advisor, explains the meaning behind having Spring Fling, “Student Council does Spring Fling week in order to break into the Spring Semester (or 4th quarter). There is generally a rough stretch during the periods of late February through May where the students don’t have many breaks from being in school and so the Spring Fling week is a fun way to get the students to relax a little bit and enjoy some dress up days and different fun activities.” Spring Fling is just one of the many activities that Student Council holds, others events include, school dances, open mic night, breakfast feeds, and many more fundraisers that help out Student Council. Student Council is a great way to get involved with the school, as well as the community. Student Council holds many different activities throughout the year; which is why the representatives really encourage everyone to dress up and participate in all of the action.

Ireland Nichols, one of the Student Council Representatives, explained why she encourages students to get involved in all that’s going on, “I encourage participation because everything we host and put on is specifically for the student body’s entertainment. We as a student council want the student body to thrive, unite and have a great time during their four years here at HHS. If you don’t participate, you are missing out on the fun!” Since there are so many different events throughout the school year, you’re sure to find something that will interest you.

Student Teachers At HHS PAIGE BOETEL Harrisburg is home to six student teachers. Since I have a student teacher in my English class, I thought it would be a great idea to find out more about some of the student teachers at Harrisburg High School. I had the privilege to ask Allison Duffy, Danielle Granberg, and Geoffrey Place, about their lives as student teachers. Geoffrey Place, a social science student teacher in the Mod/CL program, has a suggestion for students, “I think teachers wish that students would engage with the lesson. Don’t be scared of stepping out on a limb in class discussions; teachers are there to help you if you step the wrong way!” Allison Duffy, an English student teacher in Mod/CL program, has more advice for students who are stressed; she advises to “...make sure you set time aside for yourself. High school students’ lives are busy with after school activities, games, practice, schoolwork, and friends. Try to take 15 minutes a day to just be by yourself, with no electronics, to think and chill out.” Danielle Granberg, a biology student teacher in Mod/CL, has most benefited from student teaching at Harrisburg High School by working with multiple science teachers and trying new activities in the classroom that her students enjoy. Although I have not talked to all the student teachers at Harrisburg, the ones I have talked to are enjoying their time here. We also have two student teachers that have signed a contract to start their teaching career in our school.

DECA Students Preparing To Visit Nashville DREW BUNKERS Three Harrisburg High School DECA students have earned the right to represent our school and the state of South Dakota at the International Career and Development Conference in Nashville, TN. The International Career and Development Conference is where eighteen thousand high school students, advisors, and businesspersons gather to develop knowledge and skills for college and careers. Sophomores Jacob Harms, Quinton Abrahamson, and Logan Bunkers will travel to Nashville with DECA advisor Drew Bunkers from April 22-27 to both compete in competitive events and partake in leadership academies.

At the South Dakota State DECA conference in February, Jacob Harms was also selected as Harrisburg’s first ever South Dakota DECA State Officer. Jacob will serve as the Vice President of Publications for the 2016-2017 school year.

HOSA At Harrisburg High HANNAH MARKMAN

HOSA Happenings ROSS LANIER (HOSA REPORTER) After a busy March preparing for the state conference, competitions are over and there are only a few more events left in the HOSA calendar for 2016. Firstly, competitors who qualified for the Nationals Conference by placing 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in their events will have the option to register for the National Conference in Nashville, Tennessee from June 22nd to the 25th. Some competitors who ranked first in their event will have the additional benefit of receiving a travel scholarship to attend the national conference. Next, Science Saturdays will resume this month on April 9th from 9am to noon. Check the Harrisburg School District website for more information on Science Saturday. The business meeting for April takes place April 18th at 7pm. Lastly, for parents of HOSA members, the meeting for May 2nd will be a banquet where both HOSA members and their families are invited to attend to celebrate the past year in HOSA and elect the 2016-2017 Harrisburg HOSA officer team.

There are many activities in the Harrisburg School District such as FFA, FCCLA, DECA, and HOSA. Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) is an international student organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Education, which includes one hundred and fifteen high school students.

HOSA also impacts the younger kids of the Harrisburg School District, for example Science Saturdays are a wonderful way for kids to learn new scientific experiments in the science room. At one of the Science Saturday that was held at the Harrisburg High School,which was on February 27, 2015. One of the experiments that the kids will be experiencing is heart direction and learning the structures of the heart. There is much more to HOSA than just Science Saturdays; the high school students can compete in events and perform what they have learned at state. The most popular event in HOSA is Clinical Specialty; this event allows participants to job shadow a professional in the medical field. The Sanford Pentagon is where state is held on March 31st through April 1st; at state there are many medical professionals that come to the pentagon to talk about what their day to day life is like, and students can ask questions as well. Mrs. Bass and Mrs. Wachal are the teacher leaders of the program, and Mrs. Wachal states, “We have the largest chapter in the state - with 115 members! We have three members who are State Officers: Briana Gross, Manaal Ali, and Marisa Morris. We have had members travel to the National Conference every summer to compete against the best in the nation at the National Leadership Conference.” These are a few of the achievements that have been done in Harrisburg HOSA. This activity is a wonderful way to stay active in high school and learn new knowledge in the medical field.

Marching Our Way Into The Season NOAH DEIST After the long break from their exhilarating second season of competitive marching band, the Harrisburg High School band students are ready to get back into it. There are some big changes that the marching band staff has been working on for this season. Not much has been revealed to the students because the directors like to build the suspense for the season. After a short interview with the high school band director, Mr. Groon, gave a few details on what the season was going to look like.

Mr. Groon estimated that the band would grow about fifteen students this year. He mentioned, “The new incoming freshmen will be key to the growth of the marching band this year.” This season is being approached very differently than last year. Instead of starting the season in July with band camp, they will be having a practice once a week starting in April.

When asked why they were doing this, Mr. Groon answered, “When we get to drill camp in July, we will have a good idea of who is participating. It will also allow us to have most of our music memorized before drill camp.”

The band will also emphasize section leaders helping new students. This way they feel welcomed into the band family. Mr. Groon encouraged incoming freshmen to join marching band because, “It’s a place to belong.

Marching band, unlike other sports, requires everyone participating 100% of the time. If someone is missing, we have a hard time continuing without that person. Not only do we learn a lot, but we also have fun.” It helps kids make friends that don’t already have a friend group; outside of band these kids are still good friends.

The students from Harrisburg High School have been bugging the directors, trying to get something out of them about the music selection for this year’s marching band show. When asked about the music for this year, Mr. Groon was reluctant to answer. He said “There’s not much I can tell you without giving it away, and what fun would that be?” Although it was not much, I managed to squeeze a little information out of him. He said, “The music for this year will incorporate music that both students and audience members are familiar with.” Mr. Groon also thinks that this year’s show is better than last year’s.

HHS Saves Lives EMILY STRUSS Not only does donation of blood encourage giving, but it also saves lives. Before giving blood, one needs to be informed. Before beginning the donation process, one should drink a lot of fluids. This is because the donator looses quite a lot of blood during this process.

The actual amount is about 495 ml or one pint.

The process includes: An interview - asking about behaviors, travel, medication, medical conditions, and some others. Also the staff will check pulse, blood pressure, temperature, and iron levels. When one goes in, he or she must have a photo ID. If one is 16 years of age, (the minimum to give is 16) he or she must have a parent sign a parental consent form. Once approved for donating, a cuff goes around the arm just above the elbow. A staff member will clean one’s arm, and the blood will be collected. This usually takes about five to

National FFA Advisor Visits HHS NICOLE HUDSON This year the Harrisburg FFA Chapter had the honor of receiving a visit from Dr. Steve Brown, the National FFA Advisor. He along with three of this years South Dakota State officers stopped at the Harrisburg chapter for a visit in the middle of National FFA week. They helped a handful of FFA members hand out goodie bags to the students

According to Mr. Marks, FFA advisor, “HHS hosted its first Blood drive on May 20, 1992, where 45 pints were donated.” Mr. Todd Marks was the FFA advisor when the FFA hosted the first blood drive. “The drive we just completed on Thursday, March 10th, was the 49th drive at HHS. Donating blood builds character by giving students a chance to develop a lifelong community service project and also in knowing that the blood they donate will help people in great need. Simply stated, donating blood saves lives.” Mr. Marks continued to explain, “In Sioux Falls as well as the rest of the United States and the world, 1000’s of people each day rely on donated blood supplies that are used in surgeries and emergency room situations. When blood supplies are low, people are put in jeopardy. There are virtually no risks in donating blood. All donation equipment is used once to eliminate any contamination or transmission of disease to other donors. The only possible risks are a small bruising of your arm where the blood was drawn and occasionally, a donor may faint if they have not eaten properly prior to donating.”

Later that night, officers and advisors from six other chapter in South Dakota and Iowa gathered for dinner and a meet and greet with Dr. Brown. Students and advisors were given the opportunity to ask Dr. Brown questions about the FFA, personal experience, and the future agriculture holds. The Harrisburg FFA thanks Dr. Brown for coming to South Dakota and for helping our members to learn and grow in their Agricultural Education.

New FFA Officers And Award Winners Announced At FFA Banquet MR. TODD MARKS, FFA ADVISOR The Harrisburg FFA held their 46th annual awards banquet on Tuesday, March 15th. Over 220 members and guests attended and enjoyed an excellent meal provided by Tony’s Catering of Brandon. Top award winners for the evening were Nathan Harmer for receiving the Dekalb Outstanding Senior in Agriculture Award and to Kayla Smeenk and Allyson Beninga for being named this year’s Chapter Star Greenhands. The new officers who will lead the Harrisburg Chapter through the 2016-2017 school year are Ashlynne Beninga, President; Grace Aasheim, Vice-President; Nicole Hudson, Secretary; Sydney Wood, Reporter; Noah Hovorka, Sentinel; and Kylee Gronseth, Student Advisor. The April monthly meeting will include presentations from our extra curricular activity faculty as they voice their requests for funds from Tiger Nation. On Wednesday, April 20th, 7pm, High School Library, after the various directors/ coaches/advisors speak, the funds allocated for HHS extra curricular will be distributed based upon student/parent volunteer hours. The HHS public forum debate team of Lucas Davis and Jordann Krouse placed second at the SDHSAA State Debate and Individual Events competition March 4-5 at Aberdeen Central HS. The team had gone undefeated through the preliminary rounds and was the fourth seed entering eliminations. After defeating two Sioux Falls Roosevelt teams in octo-finals and quarterfinals, the team picked up a 2-1 decision over arch-rival Sioux Falls O’Gorman. In the final round, Aberdeen Central won three of the five judge’s ballots to KELLY CARLSON win the crown.

There are all kinds of different classes that students can take in high school other than their Required classes. HHS Has HeART

Since students must have at least one Fine Arts credit to graduate, I think that they should take one of these classes. From my personal experience, I have found how to look at my artwork in a different way. One way to look at a painting or drawing is by standing away from the picture and squinting the eyes.

In painting or drawing you have to make the brain think on the right side, so the artist will see how differently they view the artwork. The left side of the brain stores all the learned information and the right side of the brain keeps more of the creative elements. Taking an art class will help the students see in a different way and could help them look at life differently in the future.

The Harrisburg Tigers qualified ten wrestlers to the state tournament. Head coach,Tim Homan who has coached for 25 years, assisted by Chris Andre and Kris York. When the coaches, managers, and state wrestlers traveled to Rapid City and got ready for the days to come. With the winter season soon leaving, Harrisburg baseball season is right around the corner. The new hitting facility the Harrisburg Baseball Association, HBA, is up and running smoothly; as a result, batting is already underway for this year. Players can either hit off of tees or hit off of the pitching machine. When asked about the facility, John Ratzloff, the varsity head coach, said, “The facility was retrofitted for baseball as the HBA was looking for an existing structure that was big enough to serve the purpose of a hitting facility.” This facility was retrofitted, refurbished, and redone all for hitting purposes.

The Tiger wrestling team finished up the season at the State Tournament in Rapid City. The Tigers had two place winners in the tournament- 120 pounder Jacob Hanssen (10) was 5th and 126 pounder Taylor Dalen (11) was 5th . It was the second time that both Jacob and Taylor have placed in the State Tournament. This season the Harrisburg High School bowling team made its way to state. Last year, the boys made runner-up, and the girls were in fourth place. Although they didn’t get first place, they strived for victory. The State Bowling Tournament was on February 26, at Empire Bowl. The Harrisburg boys made their way to the top five and placed third place, while the girls placed fifth place. There were twelve girl teams and twelve boy teams at state. Lincoln High School boys got first; Roosevelt High School boys received runnerup. Roosevelt High School girls got first; Washington High School received runner-up.

Brynn, an audience member at state, was interviewed after watching the tournament. She commented on the team’s best attribute, “Even though the teams didn’t place first overall, cheering was the best part. The team was really good at pumping each other up.”

Coach Paulsen, bowling coach of Harrisburg High School, was interviewed after the state tournament and said, “I think our bowlers are best at figuring out the lane conditions and sportsmanship. They need to improve on spare shooting. We had a great amount of bowlers that have really stepped up to the plate. They are filling in some spots on the boys and girls sides where we need help. I wish there was a tournament for high school bowling teams where they would take the first and maybe second place teams from each state’s division tournaments to have a National Tournament to decide a winner overall.”

HHS Football Looks Forward To Next Season BLAKE ROBERTS Even though the football season doesn’t start until fall, Harrisburg High School head coach, Brandon White, already has big plans for next season. The team gets new football uniforms and coach Brandon White explains that the uniforms come from the Nike rep that they are associated with. He says that they are given many designs and to choose from. He also explains that as a coach, his big goal is not only to make it to the state championship but also to develop these athletes from boys to strong men. His expectations in doing so are for these athletes to attend the summer camps, participate in community service, and be the best they can be. He also encourages his athletes to either participate in other sports or take part in strength and conditioning workouts in the offseason. Brandon White says, “I don’t expect them to be superman or anything. I just want them to be the best for themselves.” Mr. White explains that he feels there are improvements that he needs to make not only for himself but also for the team. Whenever new players join, they have to change their personnel and match the players with the positions they feel are best. He tells how there are clinics that he and other coaches go to that they can learn more about the different concepts to help the team improve; Mr. White explains that the summer camps help players individually with skill sets and find their strengths and weaknesses. He sees in practice that as a team it helps with cohesiveness and with learning to have each other’s backs. Mr. White not only feels strongly about his athletes as a coach but he also enjoys seeing them improve academically, as a teacher. He sees this team as a second family to him that he spends a lot of time with. There’s a lot of passion between him and his athletes; the team means the most to him besides his actual family and teaching. Brandon White has a connection with this team like others don’t see. Since he is the coach that would do anything for his team, I’m not sure there’s a coach better that this team could ask for.

This year the cross country season went well if you ask Harrisburg cross country runner, Alexander Auch. His favorite part of the season was watching his teammates improve and grow a better runners, placing top 10 in just about every race and getting first in Brookings with a time of 16:40.66 and finishing second as a team. Alex isn’t sure yet what he will do running-wise after high school, but he says if he get the opportunity to run in college, he will take it and run with it. He also says that he is excited for next year and looks forward to it. He has been running all winter inside and out, and don’t be surprised when you see him in the summer out there because the Harrisburg team has a summer workout plan to do different runs each day. They will post the runs each week for the runners. Alex is very determined to get some of the lower varsity out and run during the summer, so next year he can hand them the reins. The benefits of running are very helpful for Alex; the calmness of a good run just makes people feel better strengthens your heart and lungs to stay in shape. I asked Alex what his hardest part of the running season was last fall, and he said it was the day after the shooting. He had a meet the day after and it was hard for him to perform at his highest. Not only is Alex looking forward to next year during cross country but also to passing the baton to the next generation of runners. Alex runs by the quote, “Running won’t kill you. You’ll pass out first.’’

Run Fast, Turn Left ALEXIS TJADEN The coming of spring brings along the start of a new Harrisburg track and field season.

Track began on February 29th; the fall of snow surprising and discouraging many runners. Kevin Kroger, the head coach of the Harrisburg track team, stated, “Weather is always a challenge in the spring in South Dakota. Being able to adjust and adapt is part of the program.” The weather is always unpredictable; however, a back up plan is always in place thanks to Kroger. As a result, the team can often find themselves practicing in the gym or at the South Middle School, though it is always best out on the track.

Like any team, everyone is hoping for the best out of the runners this season.

When asked whether he believed any new records would be set this season, only positivity came out his mouth. “Without a doubt! We have a good number of really good athletes and I am sure our Top-5 list will be updated often during the season,” stated Kroger. There are many different events students can participate in, ranging from jumping, running, sprinting, and throwing. Though with nearly 140 kids on the team, it is difficult to choose what competitive kids to fill each event.

With the team expanding every year, problems with limited people being able to attend meets have arose. This is one area that is being looked at to improve. Even though there is an increasing amount of runners, it is important to be able to offer the younger runners an opportunity to compete. This year, as of now, there are two solid JV meets on the schedule, though the team is looking to be able to add more.

North Middle School Teacher Spotlight

Earlier this month I sat down with a teacher from North Middle School to discuss his time in the Harrisburg School District, his teaching methods, and some personal stories about his life. This teacher is Mr. Hartzler, one of the 7th Grade English teachers at North. Mr. Hartzler attended college at the University of Sioux Falls not knowing exactly what he wanted to study. Before pursuing an English career, he thought about a career in banking. In his freshman year, he had a teacher named Randy Nelson; this teacher helped influence him to enjoy English. He was also part of the YMCA program for a couple years. During this time he decided that teaching middle schoolers would be the best place for him. Mr. Hartzler started teaching at Harrisburg during the 2012-2013 school year, the year I had him as a teacher, nervous about how he would do. After several years of teaching Mr. Hartzler has motivated his students through different activities like Vocab MVP, Trashcan Basketball, and Beachball Sentences.

Since he makes the activities they do in class have real world applications, students will not do the activity if it does not apply to real life. Some struggles he has come across over the years with classes are students who have more talent than what they are giving, getting kids to realize they are more talented than they think they are, and juggling time to make sure everyone understands what is being taught that day. Mr. Hartzler, like many teachers, wonder where they will be in the future. With Mr. Hartzler he would like to be an administrator of a school, own a thriving business, have a child, and go to Cuba. Over all his years of teaching Mr. Hartzler has had some great highlights. The first that comes to his mind is being one of the first teachers in a new school after North and South Middle School split into two. Along with this, he enjoys the great students willing to work hard in class everyday.

He has influenced many students and helped them remember the content they learned in class.

NMS will be presenting “A Night at the Movies” on April 19th at The Country Club of Sioux Falls. The students will be performing skits and musical performances from a number of famous movies. Our 6:00pm performance will be served with either a grilled chicken breast on a bed of quinoa and asparagus or bacon wrapped pork tenderloin with roasted fingerling potatoes and house vegetables. The 8:00pm dessert show will have an option of New York style cheesecake topped with caramel and whip topping or a rich chocolate brownies topped with fudge and vanilla ice cream. Tickets will be $25 for the dinner show and $10 for the dessert show.

Senator John Thune Visits North Middle School’s 8th Graders!

Senator John Thune took some time out of his busy schedule to stop by North Middle School to visit with the 8th graders. American History is the focus for 8th grade social studies so Mrs. Huffman, 8th grade history teacher, thought it was the perfect opportunity for her students to get introduced to government.

Senator Thune’s main message was making smart choices and being a good citizen. One way to stay positive is leading a life with great character.

8th grade is the time in life where important decisions will be made that can influence a person’s individual journey. A person giving 100% in their journey will lead a more healthy and productive life.

Senator Thune also answered questions from the audience that ranged from what his job consisted to his thoughts on the presidential race. Using his beloved game of basketball as a metaphor, Thune articulated the need to constantly improve upon oneself – whether it is for a free throw percentage, or anything else students choose to do in life.

Overall, the students really enjoyed the time they spent with Senator John Thune. Mrs. Huffman also looks forward to recapping the Senator’s message in her own classroom when she presents her unit on civics, government, and citizenship. The Senator’s visit was a nice additional supplement to the history curriculum and everyone was pleased that it worked out to meet one of our representatives from Congress.

South Middle School SMS Showcase Night SUSANNE GREEN South Showcase: creative confidence is coming to our school on Friday, April 22nd from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. South Middle School students will be displaying their work, creativity, and their successes. Students and their families are invited to celebrate the awesome things we are doing here at South! Community members and the 5th graders and their families from our feeder schools are also invited to attend the event.

South showcase is an opportunity for us to celebrate the successes and creativity of many of our students. There will be several modes of delivery for displaying student work. Some examples include: written work, science experiments, Makerspace creations, Genius Hour projects,

Oral Interpretation performances, the robotics team, visual art, the jazz band and show choir, individual talent demonstrations (by audition) including music, dance and acting, the movie club showing movies… just to name a few!

Genius Hour Successful Experience For 7th Graders 7TH GRADE TEAM What is your passion? If you could study anything, what would you choose? During a regular school day setting, students do not always have a say in what they want to learn. Students are expected to participate and learn concepts according to standards set up by the state. Genius hour gives the students the opportunity to answer the question: What do I want to learn about today?

When posed with this question, students often struggled to answer it. The students at South Middle School were no different. They had trouble identifying a passion or a topic they really wanted to learn more about in greater detail. Once students began working on the projects, passions came alive and new passions were discovered. Learning opportunities, new ideas, thoughtful experiences, successes, and failures are a few words students and teachers might use to describe their experience this year with genius hour time. The 7th graders have spent the last ten weeks working as individuals, in pairs, or in small groups to research, plan, develop, and execute their ideas to create a final product to present.

Technology, construction, community service, school improvement, health and science, and the arts were categories set up for students to branch off of and develop their learning activities. There were a number of extremely creative and out-standing projects. Students learned about different careers for their future, they looked at creating different inventions, they built new creations with their hands, and they designed fun-filled video games. While some students had very successful experiences, others did experience some failures. There were high goals set that were unable to be achieved due to time or money restraints. Others had a hard time choosing a topic and so they struggled completing a final project because of the difficulties they had simply getting started.

The students took the time to present and appreciate each other’s projects in a gallery walk format. The projects were displayed throughout the 7th grade classrooms. Students were given the chance to present to small groups and walk around to view and listen to projects completed by their peers. Genius hour was an overall successful experience for the majority of our students. It was rewarding to witness the students taking ownership in their learning and making decisions for themselves in this educational endeavor.

Once students have generated and signed up for these topics, they are able to lead the discussion and determine what it is that they want to learn.

The teacher is a facilitator and helps guide students to resources that would enable them to accomplish or dig deeper into the areas in which they are interested. The students are usually encouraged to create a product or project that exemplifies their learning, and some of these sessions are extended multiple weeks to give students an opportunity to explore more materials and take their learning to greater depths.

Do test scores matter?

The issue of state testing in schools often raises concerns and questions.

Eighth grade students at South Middle School had the privilege of diving into the world of debate during the week of February 22nd through the 26th. The week long adventure was lead by Dr. Kip McKee, the high school debate coach. Dr. McKee introduced the students to debate strategies and procedures and then let the students loose with a topic to research and debate. Our eighth graders considered the topic of social media and its effects on our world. They needed to research and weigh whether those effects were a net positive or a net negative.

Students couldn’t take sides, however. Dr. McKee informed students that during debates teams must be prepared to argue both sides of the issue. Not knowing what side they’d be called on to defend, students approached their research with an open mind. The real fun came at the end of the week. With their arguments prepared, eighth graders in teams of two debated against their classmates over the course of several rounds, judged by high school debaters. While some students dipped their toes into debate and found out it might not be for them, many more were pushed by their participation to give debate a shot in high school. Thank you to Dr. McKee and the many high school students who helped judge!

Nutrition: We all need fuel in order to do our best work. Make sure your student eats a substantial and healthy breakfast the day of testing.

Talk to Them: Talk to your student about testing. Some students feel anxious and could use support and encouragement. Other students don’t grasp the importance of testing and often fly through their exams. Encourage them to take their time, read the questions carefully and give their best effort.

Harrisburg Hosts 1st Annual SD Youth Track & Field Championship Harrisburg High School will be the host of the inaugural South Dakota Youth Track and Field Championship held on May 21, 2016. The event is open to youth born in 2002 or later and will provide a wide variety of events for boys and girls both on the track and for field events. The event is open to all youth, regardless if they live in South Dakota or a neighboring state.

The South Dakota Youth Track and Field Championships will be held specifically to give youth (ages 5 – 14) a chance to test their skills in running, jumping, and throwing events against others in two-year age group divisions. Awards will go to the top six entries in each event per age group, with one elite athlete in each age group earning special recognition for outstanding accomplishments during the day.

Students learned that the forces of weathering and erosion are a destructive force while deposition is a constructive force. Students also learned the Earth’s crusts are broken into giant slabs called plates and they are always on the move all be it very slowly. th

Students also had a chance to test a theory of how the Grand Canyon was formed. They created a plateau and used water to see if a canyon would form. They changed the amount of water that flowed onto the plateau and also changed the slope to see if those changes would make the canyon form faster.

Freedom Elementary

Students PAWS For School Expectations This year all of the elementary schools in the Harrisburg School District adopted school-wide expectations for how we conduct ourselves outside the classroom in areas such as the hallway, bathrooms, cafeteria, and playground. Students remember these expectations with the acronym PAWS: Practice Safety, Accept Responsibility, Work Hard, and Show Respect.

For the month of February, Freedom Elementary created a Recess Pawsitive Note Hall of Fame board. Each recess staff found a handful of students that were exhibiting the characteristics of our PAWS expectations, specifically “Practicing Safety,” and they each received a Pawsitive Note.

At the end of the month, we put all the notes in a hat and pulled names for a prize. Congratulations to our inaugural Recess Hall of Fame winners and to all the students at Freedom Elementary for doing such a great job following our PAWS expectations each and every day!

Exploring New Science Curriculum In Fourth Grade DANIELLE PLACE, KATHLEEN PETERSEN, AND SHAINA RUTER Throughout the school year, grade school students in Harrisburg have been fortunate to experience a new twist on science lessons. The new Houghton Mifflin series titled, Science Fusion, extends lessons beyond a textbook and allows a much more ‘hands-on’ approach to science lessons and concepts. This series has allowed many young minds to engage in a more interactive fashion by providing small group opportunities for different science activities, creative experiments, and technology savvy lessons such as virtual science labs and video rich content on the interactive whiteboard.

In three fourth grade classrooms at Freedom Elementary have enjoyed a more “out of the box” approach to learning about the world around them with units ranging from ecosystems, properties of matter, natural disasters, and energy. When asked about the new science curriculum, forth grade students stated: “Our new science is better because it is fun to write in our workbooks.”

With new curriculum from all subject areas being infiltrated into schools and higher academic standards to achieve, teachers agree that a science series such as Science Fusion, which is geared towards standardized testing materials and questioning, challenges students now more than ever. We are lucky to have such great materials to work with in preparing our students to compete with those around the state of South Dakota as well as the nation as a whole.

Journey Elementary Fetal Pig Exploration At Journey TONDA KIRTON Twenty, fifth grade students participated in an after school program Monday, February 29 through Thursday, March 03, 2016.

Fifth grade teacher Tonda Kirton headed Journey Through the Fetal Pig. “I am intrigued by science and wanted to show students that we are never too old to learn something new”.

On day one, students were placed into groups of two and given a fetal pig. They put on gloves, lab coats, safety goggles, and masks. Safety rules were reviewed and a discussion of respect toward living and non-living organisms was encouraged. Groups needed to first tie their pig’s legs to secure it to the dissection pan. Determination was made of gender and then dissection began in the mouth. The hard and soft palates were located as well as the tongue and trachea.

Day two was met with much eagerness as dissection continued into the abdomen. Students were able to locate the liver, gall bladder, stomach, small and large intestine, as well as the bladder. Sierra Stiff stated, “It was cool to see all the stuff inside the pig and learn about what each organ does because it is arranged so much like the inside of a human”.

Journey Elementary Makerspace Journey Elementary 3rd and 4th graders have been busy working on STEM activities in the library this year! Tuesday afternoons are reserved for a rotating schedule of classes getting to explore Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics through playing and experimenting: our version of a Makerspace!

Journey Principal, Dr. Micy Highstreet and District Librarian, Cindy DeWandel, encouraged Technology Integrationist Marta Hoffman and Librarian Beth Wells to explore how a Makerspace might fit into the elementary school, after seeing the success of South Middle School’s Makerspace led by Travis Lape and Kristi Jones.

Marta and Beth attended a workshop at Black Hills State University last summer hosted by the South Dakota State Library to learn more about the concept. They got a chance to see how other libraries in our state were trying out makerspace activities. Both also attended a fall workshop at South Middle School, with hands on activities, led by Lape and Jones. In addition, Marta attended a continuing education workshop Travis taught where she got to explore some additional materials we could add to our makerspace in the future.

With some ideas in mind, Mrs. Hoffman and Mrs. Wells approached the Journey PTO, led by President Lisa Tschetter and asked for funding to buy some kits for a makerspace. Our PTO was very generous, and approved the purchase of several kits. Marta ordered some kits from Kidtoypia, came up with a “ticket” system to keep track of what stations students have tried, and lined up teachers and classes for Tuesday afternoons.

If you stop by Journey Library on a Tuesday afternoon, you will see students working in pairs constructing marble runs, snap circuits, littleBits, K-NEX, GoldieBlox, or Zoob, or programing Recon Robots, learning with OSMOs and iPads, completing challenges with Lazer Mazes, or making pigs fly with the Werid Wacky Contraption set. A cart of supplies is available for students who may need tape, scissors, feathers, cups, or cardboard to complete an experiment.

Third and Fourth grades have enjoyed visiting the Makerspace so far, and PTO has again generously approved the purchase of additional kits for us to expand the Makerspace to additional grade levels. We hope to have our 1st and 2nd graders exploring and learning with some new age-appropriate kits before the school year in completed. We are excited to be a part of this new movement, providing opportunities for our students to learn in different ways.

From the Circus to Space the music room is going Wild. Journey 1st, 3rd and 5th grade students performed their concerts in March. 1st grade went Off to the Circus where they showed skills they have learned through the year. They will play instruments, sing and dance. 3rd grade is blasted off into Space. They performed music with a space theme from Mars to comets flying through the sky. 5th grade students performed their final elementary concert Wild, with focus on all things Wild. All of the concerts had a variety of instruments, musical styles, purposeful movement and focus on musical skills and standards.

Read Across America Week 3RD GRADE TEAM February 29- March 4th Liberty Elementary celebrated Read Across America Week in honor of Dr. Seuss’s Birthday on March 2nd. During this fun-filled week, the Liberty students and staff participated in dress-up days, a musical parade, and a hallway decorating contest.

Students enjoyed dressing up and making homemade musical instruments for the Seussical Parade around the school. Dress-up days included Twins Day, Hat Day, Wear Green Day, Crazy Sock Day, and Pajama Day. Each day was chosen because it related to a Dr. Seuss book.

Grade-level teams also participated in a Dr. Seuss themed hallway decorating contest. Staff members had fun getting creative transforming the hallways and adding to the feel of the celebratory week.
