Abraham Lincoln is credited with the quote “The best way to predict your future is to create it.” I am an avid believer. In the past five years as your mayor, a lot of planning, g r o w i n g , collaboration with organizations and changing has occurred. Some you have been able to see, some you haven’t. The new Fareway and Ace Hardware are testaments to years of preparation including

applying appropriate planning and zoning resources, holding dialog with county commissioners and hours and hours of collaboration with the Harrisburg Community Foundation who initiated the purchase of land for the central park. All of this work has created a solid foundation for more business and residential growth; and you should be very proud of the city staff who have made this a reality. I am! I am consistently quizzed on “What is ‘next’ for Harrisburg?” and I have no shortage of ideas. While we have accomplished so much, there is still a lot of work to ensure we continue to create our

future. One avenue to do this is by establishing a “Harrisburg Leadership Group” comprised of leaders, board members, pastors/ priests/churches, the school district and other formal and informal influences that will meet monthly to exchange communication and ideas, identify and organize collaborative opportunities and employ succession planning. This is a big step in ensuring Harrisburg remains unified while it retains its identity all while serving all the different interests, needs and residents in our community. I look forward to updating you in the spring on our progress! Mayor Julie

Veterans Day Around The District DISTRICT PRINCIPALS Students and staff throughout the district are excited to honor the veterans in our community this month. The high school and both North and South middle schools will come together for a Veteran’s Day Assembly in the morning on Friday, November 10th, at 9:00 am in the gymnasium. The keynote speaker will be Staff Sergeant Ryan Hanson. Ryan is originally from Madison, SD, where he attended high school and Dakota State University. In 2000, he enlisted in the South Dakota

Army National Guard as a combat engineer. Shortly thereafter, from 2003-2005, he was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. After his return from deployment, he was promoted to Sergeant and became a Noncommissioned Officer (NCO). In 20162017, he was deployed to Kuwait and Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, returning from active duty this past October. Sgt. Hanson has been awarded the Iraq Campaign Medal with two campaign stars, a Meritorious Service Medal, an Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, five Reserve Component Achievement Medals, a Driver and Mechanic Badge with Driver-Wheeled Vehicles, a Combat Action Badge, as well as many other honors. He is a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Enlisted Association, and the Army Engineer Association. Hanson is currently a Staff Sergeant in the Army National Guard and an assistant warehouse manager for Montgomery’s Furniture. He is married to Mrs. Kate Hanson, a 1st grade teacher at Harrisburg Liberty Elementary. They have two children: Alyssa, 14 years old and a 9th Grader at HHS, and Kyra (18 months). The public is welcome to attend. A short reception will

be held immediately following the assembly. At South, some classes will continue the day learning about related content. South also invites veterans to eat with their child or grandchild November 10 during lunch. The meal will be free for Veterans. North Middle School would like to extend an invitation to family members of our students that have served in the United States military to join us for a complimentary lunch that day. Please email Mr. Fesler or Ms. Olinger so we can help set you up at the right time. Horizon Elementary Student Council will host veteran’s for lunch at school on Nov. 10th free of charge. Guidance classes will be making patriotic placements to use for the event. Freedom Student Council will also be serving and providing a free meal for Veteran’s on Friday, November 10th. Freedom learners are encouraged to invite an adult in their lives who is currently serving in the military or has served. Freedom Student Council will decorate and set up a special area in the gym for learners to sit and eat lunch with their Veteran.
