Economic Development Tools Bring New Business To Harrisburg ADRIENNE MCKEOWN, PRESIDENT, HARRISBURG ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION & CHAMBER OF COMMERCE When I was a student at Augustana in the late 90s, I had an engaging professor who had a line he used frequently when teaching us about governments around the world. I’m not sure why it stuck with me all these years later, but it did. In a very animated yet hushed voice he would say, “The rumors— they are all true.”

You’ve probably already heard about this exciting announcement through the Harrisburg rumor mill or even through trusted news sources by now. Still, I’m excited

the fastest growing cities in South Dakota, we need to keep bringing in businesses that our residents need and want and continue to grow the tax base.

The 15,000 square-foot store will provide much needed goods and services in Harrisburg for residents’ do-it-yourself projects.

Furthermore, it will bring new jobs to our community and will significantly increase our retail tax base, which turns into money the city can use for a wide array of improvements around town.

With that in mind, we recently implemented a new sales tax rebate grant program for new businesses and for businesses looking to expand in a way that will grow the tax base, provide a strong commitment to the community, and diversify the economic base. This rebate program allows the HEDC and the city to work together to incentivize businesses to look at Harrisburg as a potential new location or for expansion.

While the addition of Ace, Fareway, Air Madness, and several other new businesses in town will undoubtedly bring new sales tax revenue to Harrisburg, we on the Economic Development Corporation (HEDC) board know that we can’t stop there. As one of

When was your business established?: I was very honored to take over The Hair Depot August 1st 2017 from Roger Timmerman.

It’s really a long-term investment on our part. By giving part of the sales tax money back to the business to invest in start-up costs, we are helping to set the business up for

Harrisburg Area Food Pantry Welcomes New Director The Harrisburg Area Food Pantry welcomes Lanette Schmidt as Executive Director effective October 1st, 2017. Lanette, who has been a regular volunteer at the pantry for the past year, recently retired as a nursing professional from Keystone Treatment Center in Canton, South Dakota. She and her husband, Bill, live on acreage near Harrisburg.

Sheila Coleman has resigned her current position as she and her husband plan to travel extensively. Although turning over the reins to Lanette on the 1st, Sheila plans to return to Sioux Falls to oversee the Boy Scout Food Drive later this month and will be volunteering at the pantry at other times when she is in the area.

Local Businesses Work Together To Do Good For Those In Need After Pat from Fresh Horses provided lunch and Schoeneman’s donated supplies, a team from Sammons Financial Group spent a recent afternoon cleaning and reorganizing the pantry.

From wire-brushing rust on pantry rails, to power washing the building, removing debris from gutters, and scrubbing, defrosting, and rearranging, these folks worked. The pantry never looked so good. A huge THANK YOU to Pat, Schoeneman’s and our friends at Sammons Financial Group.

Pantry Needs With the Boy Scout Food Drive occurring this month and while we sincerely appreciate everything we receive, this is a good time to highlight items we can really use.

Food: canned seafood/meat, kid friendly cereals, salsa, spaghetti sauce, Chicken/Tuna Helper, canned tomatoes, chili beans, chili – no beans, spaghettios, Manwich, Stovetop Stuffing, and seasonings.

In the personal care and cleaning supply area, we can use laundry detergent, aspirin, and cold and flu meds.

The last week in October, the Boy Scouts will conduct their annual food drive.

As the grateful recipients of these donations, the Harrisburg Area Food Pantry needs about 60 volunteers to make this a success.

The week of October 9th, 3,000 bags need to be stuffed. You can do this in your home or at your place of business and at your convenience. This would be a perfect group project.

Saturday, October 28th is the actual date of the food drive.

After collecting the donations,

the bags will be delivered to the pantry at 203 Prairie St in Harrisburg. We are setting up volunteers to help in two hour overlapping shifts starting at 9:00 am. For example, 9:00 – 11:00, 9:30 – 11:30, 10:00 – noon, etc. The last shift will be from 3:00 – 5:00. Help is needed weighing the food, sorting, bringing it from the curb into the pantry, and stocking.

We can’t do this without you and hope you can commit to an entire two hour shift. However, if you’re available for as little as ½ hour, we will find a job for you! Each month we have also scheduled a guest speaker on the third Tuesday each month.

This month is a particularly special month as we will have three nights of guest speakers. On Monday October 16th we will have speaker Ron Peterson of Sioux Falls speak about incorporating native plants into your landscape. Then on Tuesday and Wednesday October 17th and 18th we are pleased to inform you that Dale Henning will be giving talks about the archeology of Blood Run. Dale was one of the researchers of the park and the Blood Run National Historical site. Each of his talks will be different and his book on the area is available for purchase at the park.

Fall Sewer Lagoon Turnover During spring and fall the air temperature warms or cools the top layer of water in the sewer lagoons, creating “thermal instability”. In the fall, the cooler surface water sinks down, displacing the warmer water at the bottom of the lagoon, it dislodges the solids at the bottom, which have been quietly anaerobically digesting.

The anaerobic digestion process releases gas as a byproduct, which becomes entrained in the sludge.

Once dislodged, the gas trapped in the sludge causes it to rise from the bottom

of the lagoon and float. This process is called ‘turn over’. With the rising gas byproduct of anaerobic digestion, unpleasant lagoon odors are released in the atmosphere all at once. These odors, coupled with the floating sludge mat, are strong during lagoon turnover, which typically lasts a couple of weeks depending on the loading of the lagoons. Every city and town with lagoons go through the same process and smell.

Banquet With Silent Auction Kicks Off The Year For Tiger Nation JANE KLEMME Tiger Nation Annual Booster Club Banquet was held at the Harrisburg Events Center on August 20th, 2017. Just over $12,000 was raised at the Banquet and Silent auction.

The event was attended by 175 parents, extracurricular coaches, teachers, corporate sponsors and friends of the Tigers. The banquet meal featured catered food with a relaxed atmosphere, where attendees had a chance to socialize.

When the food was finished, however, the socialization subsided as the competition heated up. This year the silent auction offered over 90 baskets of goods and/ or services for attendees to bid on. Every attendee was given a number, which was used to bid up their favorite basket. In the end, no matter who brought home the items, the kids won the night as all proceeds earned through the Tiger Nation fundraiser are donated, at the end of the school year, to extracurricular clubs and activities at Harrisburg High School.

New to the annual booster club banquet this year were silent auction baskets donated by the parents and student participants of extracurricular activities.

The Drama Club used their donations to promote the arts throughout the region by offering up for bids four “Night on the Town” baskets featuring tickets to plays and/ or local concerts. The Debate team put together an Iowa Hawkeyes basket that caught the eye of many visitors to the HS office, many of whom decided to buy tickets and attend the Tiger Nation Banquet in hopes of winning that prize. Many thanks from the Tiger Nation Booster Club to all high school students, their parents, teachers and coaches for putting together these beautiful silent auction items.

Returning to the silent auction this year were baskets of items donated by businesses in Harrisburg and all throughout the Sioux Falls area. First time donations were received from Diana Collier, new owner of the Hair Depot in Harrisburg, as well as the new Game Changer eating establishment located on Cliff Avenue, and Grains and Grapes; just to name a few. Many thanks to all the businesses for helping Tiger Nation kick off the fundraising

The program for this year’s booster club banquet included just a few tweaks. A guest speaker was added to the lineup with Judd Harrold, wide receiver for the Sioux Falls Storm football team, who discussed encouraging students to put their best foot forward in whatever activities they undertake with a growth mindset and grit.

Coach interviews were conducted by sports announcer, Rod Pattison.

This year eight coaches were on hand to answer questions. It was a good chance for the community to meet Pete Di Pol, the Tigers’ new wrestling coach and Stephanie Hovda, first-ever gymnastics coach at Harrisburg High School.

Gymnastics is a program newly added to an evergrowing list of extracurricular activities at HHS. Also new this year are competitive cheer and dance.

Tiger Nation is a booster club that supports all extracurricular activities at the Harrisburg High School.

Parents, school staff, community members and businesses are encouraged to become members of the booster club. Multiple membership levels are available, including a staff membership for teachers, coaches and other members of the district staff. One goal is key for Tiger Nation – “It’s for the kids.” All monies raised throughout the year are available to be allocated to extracurricular activities at Harrisburg High School. The Tiger Nation Board considers all coaches’ requests for monies at the end of the school year. These requests are weighed against volunteer hours served by parents, students, or community members who help on behalf of each activity. Any volunteer who helps out with Tiger Nation signs up under the extracurricular activity they support. Monies requested are more likely to be allocated if the volunteer hours for that activity prove sufficient.

Membership in Tiger Nation is not a prerequisite for a Tiger fan to volunteer.

Tigers Were Hungry For Homecoming!

PAIGE WOOD “Homecoming is all about having fun with your friends and showing your school spirit,” said student council member Maddie Souter. This is exactly what our school did. This year student council put together the Hunger Games Homecoming.

Student Council planned the dress up days and creative decorations for the whole week. They were also responsible for the events that went on through the week. For instance, Coronation, Jersey Sales, Powderpuff, Men’s Volleyball, Tiger Olympics, and the Homecoming Dance.

Other than these events, student council works hard to think of the student dress-up days. On Monday, students showed their comfy, casual side with Hobo Day. This day represented District 12 from The Hunger Games. On Tuesday, the students took it easy with beach and tourist clothes, which represented Districts 4 and 6. Next, on Wednesday, the school dressed up like farmers and their favorite animal

from District 10 and 11! Thursday, video games came to life when the students wore their favorite game character, representing District 3. Finally, on Friday, the school showed their school spirit with Tiger gear as the school, the Panem Resistance, took on Aberdeen at the Homecoming Football Game. Student council is encouraging students to post any pictures they have from Homecoming Week, using the #HarrisburgHomecomingGames.

The students had a blast in this year’s Homecoming Hunger Games! If any student wants to help set it up next year, join student council. According to Matt Harris, president of student council, “As a member, you get the ability to participate in the group of student government that plans different events throughout the year to encourage people to get together with their class and others in the high school.” There are many more elements you can participate in on student council: contribute to the community, meet new people from different schools, and build character. Don’t be afraid to join; you won’t regret it!

2017 Tiger Bowl Showcases Team Events JANE KLEMME A very busy day for the Tigers of all ages and their families at the annual Tiger Bowl festivities on Saturday, September 9, 2017. Morning activities included a cheer camp and a football camp for elementary-aged Tigers.

High School events started at 9:00 AM with Girls Tennis hosting Milbank and Spearfish. Harrisburg girls and boys soccer teams hosted Mitchell in JV and varsity matches. The volleyball team welcomed Brandon Valley for 9th grade, 10th grade, JV and varsity matches. At 7:00 PM the Harrisburg Tigers took on the Huron Tigers in varsity action. The fun continued with halftime entertainment provided by the HHS Competitive Cheer Squad, HHS Marching Band and HHS Competitive Dance – Kick Squad.

Results of the varsity matches at the Tiger Bowl on September 9 are as follows: Girls Tennis vs. Milbank – Tigers win 8-1. “Our match against Spearfish got rained out but we were up 2-0 before the rain hit” reports Matt Termanson, Tennis Coach. Volleyball swept Brandon Valley in three sets – (25-8) (25-18) (25-14). The varsity volleyball team remains undefeated up to this date. Girls varsity soccer conquered Mitchell with a score of 2-1. The 2017-2018 school year is starting off quickly for the HHS HOSA organization. This year our membership is currently at 95 students in grades 9-12 and we are one of the largest organizations in the state!

Our October meeting will be focusing on helping members sign up for their events at for the State Competition that will be held in April. On the 21st of October the leadership team and a few select members will attend the HOSA Fall Leadership Academy in Vermillion, SD.

The first all member meeting occurred on September 11th. The meeting introduced the officer team of the 2017-2018 school year.

On Saturday, October 28th, we will host another Science Saturday from 9 am-noon. All students in grades 2nd5th are encourage to attend. For the registration and information on cost please see the HOSA link on the High School page of the school website or contact Sarah.k.Brink@k12.sd.us.

Kicking off the season with a state championship under your belt is a great accomplishment. Ronette Costain, the head coach of the Harrisburg Volleyball Team, wants to accomplish the following goals by the end of the 2017-2018 season: increase the skills and level of competition of all five teams and repeat to win another state championship in November.

Preparing for a back-to-back state championship is hard work; however, the Tigers hope that the effort they put in this season will pay off. Coach Costain states, “We are going to compete every day in practice and work toward our team’s goals in games... we are choosing to look at the big picture and that is playing our best ball every night and being the best team we can by the start of state playoffs on November 9, 2017.”

The Harrisburg Volleyball Team has a total of six seniors this year. One of the six seniors, Rachel Nelson, a defensive specialist, states her thoughts on going into the 2017-2018 season, saying, “A back to back state championship would mean the world to me as a senior because I think it would be a fabulous way for all of us seniors to end our high school career.” Nelson is hoping to continue her success on the court as she says, “In my past three years as a Harrisburg volleyball player, the team has attained a placing at the State Tournament, a significant State Championship, as well as ESD conference titles. I think the most important element that we have accomplished, though, would be playing as a cohesive unit rather than a bunch of individuals.” The Tigers have started their season off undefeated; they hope to carry this momentum into playoffs.

JANE KLEMME It’s early… but not early enough. The cats are hungry and so are the kids. The alarm clock sang this morning but no one was listening. Everyone in the household is getting a late start. Who should you call?

Joanne Highland! Harrisburg High School has a brand new voice on the attendance line.

Joanne, a native of Illinois, moved to South Dakota in 2013.

She worked previously for the Sioux Falls School District and started as the HHS Attendance Supervisor last month.

“It is extremely helpful when parents know their child is going to be absent, that they call or email in advance to notify the attendance office,” states Ms. Highland. Ms. Highland can be easily notified of attendance issues via e-mail Joanne.

Highland@k12.sd.us or by calling the Harrisburg School District main line and following the prompts: 743-2567; ext. 3 for high school; ext. 1 for attendance. When parents/guardians leave a message, Ms. Highland will update the student’s attendance on Infinite Campus , thereby notifying teachers which students are not expected in class that day.

When a high school student is marked absent for the day, it does not have to stay that way. A student who arrives at school later in the day (following a scheduled appointment or other absence the parents/guardians have reported), he or she should present to the main office or the Attendance office on the west end of the building.

The student is marked present and if a note from the healthcare provider is turned in, that absence will be changed from absent-excused to absentappointment.

We’re On the Lookout Ms. Highland remains diligent throughout the day monitoring students’ attendance. Tardiness is discouraged. “The HHS attendance office sends an auto-generated email around 9:00 am and again at 3:30 pm that informs parents of student tardies and unexcused absences. In the email, it states what periods/mods students missed and information of whom to contact if the student feels there was an error,” says Highland. “In addition to our daily emails, we also call parents when students have been marked absent and we can’t confirm their location. Typically, more calls

are made in the morning as we are confirming if students are ill, etc.”

Students: Have Your Parents Call Ms. Highland So Mrs. Bass Doesn’t Call You! “When students reach five absences in a class, we send another parent email notifying them of HHS attendance policies,” states Highland. If either tardiness or attendance appears to be an issue for a learner, Mrs. Bass follows up with that learner. “I meet with HHS students on a daily basis. Often times, after discussing their attendance, we can problem solve the root of their attendance issue and students are able to adjust their attendance patterns. We want to be proactive, to discuss attendance issues early, before they become barriers to the learning process.

If a student’s attendance is hindering their academic success, the attendance office, counseling staff, and administration will meet with the student and parents/guardians to discuss how HHS can help student attendance; but more importantly, prepare that student for expectations and success post high school.” says Bass. Kay Bass is in her second year as Dean of Students at HHS. Bass is a science teacher in the building for periods 1 through 4 and spends her afternoons as an administrator, promoting positive behaviors and possibly perfect attendance.

A Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow A new attendance policy has been implemented at HHS this year.

Senior learners have been granted open campus lunch privileges.

This is different than the traditional senior privileges, which historically have been granted the second semester of the senior year. The open-campus lunch policy was implemented in 2017 to free up space in the commons during lunch periods due to increasing high school enrollment. “The policy also does a nice job rewarding high school seniors for making good choices,” states Ryan Rollinger, HHS principal. Mr. Rollinger is in his first year as principal at HHS. He is no stranger to the high school administrative team however, as he had previously served as Dean of Students and Assistant Principal since 2009.

Beneficial Brain Breaks PIERCE OKKEN It has b e e n said, “An a p p l e a day keeps t h e doctor away” so, do a couple chin-ups a day keep the homework away?

Recently, the principal of Harrisburg High School, Mr. Ryan Rollinger, added a 20-minute physical activity session back into the high school schedule for two days out of every five-day span. When he made the call, he had many reasons for the decision, but Mr. Rollinger says, “My main goals are to promote increased engagement, focus, energy, and learning for our students.”

Because of all of the proven effectiveness of this idea, many companies are also beginning to put this idea into practice; big names such as Google, General Electric, Twitter, Microsoft, and EMC have all put this idea on the grind stone. A recent study among these companies

by The American College of Sports Medicine has shown an average of 15% productivity boost when physical activity was included in the work day. Since it is still very early in the school year, Mr. Rollinger has not been able to decide whether or not this will idea will stay for

good. What he has seen, though, has made him hopeful that this may be a positive addition. “It is still very early to tell if this will decrease the number of behavior issues or increase engagement/productivity in the afternoons. From conversations with students, the majority have voiced positives. The only drawbacks I have seen is some students making poor choices, such as sacrificing time to get caught up with their work to stay in the gym or wandering the building,” says Rollinger.

Physical activity, even in small amounts, allows the brain to relax and unwind, which increases productivity.

This is the basic principle and driving force behind all of the studies, tests, and decisions made on this topic. Mr. Rollinger states that he “did some research this summer on mental breaks during the work/ school day. I found quite a bit of research stating the effectiveness of ‘brain breaks,’ physical activity, or down time during the work/school day.” Perhaps less homework, higher grades, and increased scholarships will all be a direct result of this change.

If this idea turns out to be all that it is hyped up to be, it may very well be the biggest school innovation since electric pencil sharpeners!

Start From Scratch

This year on September 21st, Harrisburg High School hosted the Variety Show, a performance that included a variety of different acts unrelated to each other. HHS’s Variety Show consisted of sixteen student acts and four staff acts, as well as a performance by the show choir. The show was Hunger Games themed, so many of these acts related to that theme. With everything combined, the excellent Variety Show was formed.

Harrisburg High School has recently made some new additions by adding two brand new programs: competitive cheer and competitive dance.

Both competitive groups are now available for students to join and be a part of.

Although the challenge of starting a new team may be difficult, these organizations are working hard to create a name for themselves, have high success rates, and overcome the challenges of a “start from scratch” team.

In upcoming seasons, it is predicted that these programs will start to take off and gain growth. Forming a brand-new team has been an obstacle to overcome for both of these programs; however, high hopes of success still remain for both teams. There is no doubt Harrisburg High is looking forward to the outcome of these hardworking teams.

When creating the Variety Show, everyone faced some type of challenges One of these challenges was that the show was put together in a short amount of time. Mandy Berg, the Harrisburg School District Theater Manager and Drama Director, explained part of this problem: “We lost a week this year because Homecoming was a bit earlier, so we had about 3 weeks to pull this show together.” Mrs. Berg also had to plan around student and staff schedules. Since there was this limit on time and challenging scheduling, Mrs. Berg stated that, “We are limited on time, but that means when we are together, we work hard and are efficient.

We are able to get a ton done in a very short amount of time.”

The scheduling and amount of time are not the only struggles; students tend to battle with stress at the beginning of a new school year. To elaborate on that, Mrs. Berg explained, “It is at the start of the year, so students are still trying to figure out how to balance school, work, activities, family, friends, and time for themselves.”

Creating the show caused many struggles for staff and students, but they were able to work through these problems and create an amazing show.

The Harrisburg High School

Dance Team, an organization run by Coach Melissa Fikse, has found many successes already this year. Since the beginning of the season, a challenge for these dancers has been forming together as one team and making new customs and traditions.

Competing at their first two season meets, located in Watertown and Aberdeen, the team placed second overall and fourth overall. Coach Melissa Fikse is setting goals to create one unified HHS Dance Team that works together as a team to grow.

When asked about following years, she says, “I would be honored to have the privilege of working with these same girls for years to come as we continue to set a standard for what we desire for HHS Dance.” All are excited to see the Harrisburg Dance Team continue to make their own brand and overcome challenges in both this season and the many seasons to come.

Cheerleading has always been a part of Harrisburg, but a newly added competitive cheer team is now available for cheerleaders interested

in showing off their skills at a competition level. To cheerlead at Harrisburg High School would mean representing your school spirit with passion and leadership.

The HHS Cheer Team has faced similar challenges to HHS Dance with starting a new team and building a reputation for themselves.

Coach Eve Langerock, who is also a teacher and librarian at Harrisburg High, is looking forward to improving the skill-sets of each individual cheerleader to strengthen the team as a whole. In upcoming years, she says, “We look forward to the program continuing to grow in strength and numbers as more students take interest in the sport. The older girls will step into leadership roles, and we will build a strong tradition of competitive cheer at HHS.” With the hard work these programs are giving forth, there is no doubt that they will leave a legacy at Harrisburg High School.

The Ins And Outs Of This School’s Secret Sport: Robotics LONDON VAN SICKLE Since Robotics is a competitive sport based around building and programming robots to do certain tasks, it becomes less popular due to it not having people to cheer on the field.

The robot operates itself partly autonomously, and the other part, the majority, the team does manually. The team controls the manual part through one or more controllers’ teams to which they have programmed the robot to respond. A few different goals that the team must achieve in tournaments this year include the following: stacking and gathering cones, avoiding other teams’ cones, and lifting the cones onto poles. On top of this, Izzy Roth, a member of the B team, stated, “Our primary objectives are to continue to improve our robot, Torjin, throughout the season. We also want to enhance communication between both our drivers and the teams we ally with and improve our strategies.”

Although that part may seem like a bunch of jargon, in essence, it means an expanding arm that can lift grounded items up and a bunch of motors to go fast. Onto the next part of battle, putting up a fight, creating a strategy, and working on teamwork. During tournaments, the team can find a partner and if they integrate well with them, they can work with them to dominate. Strategy wise, the Harrisburg teams have to see how the teams who beat them do it and then implement their designs.

For the most part, it’s a game of skill. Teams have to figure out how to topple others using the same components and resources. With enough skill and teamwork, teams like the Harrisburg Districts can become triumphant; however, without the ability to adapt, even the strongest teams fall to those that do. Hopefully, the Harrisburg community will be able to put up a good fight and win the Groton tournament and those to come.

Harrisburg Tigers Running For Success

MEGAN BROWN The annual Tiger Bowl took place Saturday, September 9, 2017. It was a day filled with festivities, fun, and lots of wins for the Harrisburg Tigers. Starting at the beginning of the day, Tiger Tennis played Milbank and won with a score of 8-1. Shortly after the first game, the rain began and the second match was postponed until the afternoon where two Harrisburg double teams won against Spearfish.

The soccer fields were also put to good use on Saturday when the teams played Mitchell. The girls’ varsity claimed their first win after a tough game, and the boys’ varsity tied their game.

When girls’ varsity soccer player, Lily Petersen, was asked about the games, she responded, “The Tiger Bowl is always a great way to bring the students closer together. For soccer, we don’t usually get a large crowd, but the 2017 Tiger Bowl helped spread the word and fill our bleachers!”

Inside the building, the Harrisburg Volleyball Team played Brandon Valley. The Freshman 1 and JV team put up a good fight but lost in three sets. The Freshman 2, Sophomore, and Varsity teams won their matches.

During the volleyball games, the Harrisburg dance team performed in front of Harrisburg fans for the first time; they also made an appearance at half time of the football game.

Even off campus, Harrisburg Cross Country was running, baseball was playing, and fans were cheering. The Harrisburg Cross Country and Baseball teams represented the Tigers in two different locations: Yankton Trails and Brandon Valley.

Cross country runners ran hard but did not place in the Yankton Trail Meet, and baseball won their game against Brandon Valley.

The main event of the day was the football game. Before the game, the mini cheer camp performed on the field, and the annual Harrisburg Tailgate took place. About 10 minutes into the game, the rain came down.

The Harrisburg Cheer Team was supposed to perform at halftime but, due to the rain, had to cancel. Even through the rain, the Tigers were able to win a game for the history books. The final score was 49-0. There was meant to be fireworks, but due to the rain, they were canceled. It was a big game for running back Jack Anderson who set the new Harrisburg record for single game rushing yards. Overall it was a very successful game for the Tiger Football Team.

Tiger Tennis In Full Swing

The Harrisburg Girls Tennis Team is in full swing this fall as they are wrapping up their regular season play and preparing for state. There are 13 girls participating in the tennis program this year; even with the below ideal numbers for the season, the team has earned many accomplishments. They began the season with an energetic start, earning a record of 9-4.

There was also a majority of girls with an individual winning record. The tennis season often includes challenges: the biggest challenge their team faced was finding the right double partners. Furthermore, doubles partners need to be able to work together and have good chemistry in order to succeed. This is a big challenge to overcome every year; although, now the team believes they have the right doubles partners to finish the season strong.

State for girls’ tennis will take place on the 5th, 6th, and 7th of October in Sioux Falls, SD. There are 22 girls’ high school tennis teams in the state, and the HHS Girls Tennis Team will compete against all of them. Matthew Termansen, head coach of the tennis team, has high goals for his team this postseason. “Our goal for state is to win a trophy and that would be to finish in the Top 6,” said Termansen.

This season is only the third year of the tennis program at Harrisburg, so top six at state would be an amazing accomplishment. The team has made a great amount of progress this year, and they are looking forward to competing in state.

Golf is a sport that can be enjoyed by all ages, no matter what skill level. It is a great sport for teaching basic skills that are needed in life: following rules, having etiquette, showing discipline, and bettering oneself.

“Golf is something you can enjoy your entire life,” Coach Darin Dahle wrote when asked why golf is an important sport for people to learn to play. “It gives you a chance to spend time with friends and family outdoors. It is also something you can do to feed your competitive

spirit no matter what your skill level is, and it teaches discipline and a drive to compete with yourself to improve.”

Coach Dahle commented on his inspiration to become a coach: “I became a golf coach because of the love I have for the game. I want to share the joy I have for it and inspire student-athletes to really enjoy a game they can play throughout their entire lifetime.” Coach Beckstrand replied, “Golf is a life time love that allowed me to be around students who also share the same passion.”

With a team of 21 Harrisburg golfers, the coaches enjoy challenging each athlete to reach his personal goals.

Coach Dahle commented, “Golf is the ultimate sport that you can constantly improve in no matter what your skill level is. You have a chance to play a game that people say ‘can’t be beat.’ There is at least one shot per round that really gets the excitement level up and keeps you coming back for more!”

The Start Of A New Season ADDI JENSEN It’s the start of the newest installation to the drama lineup here at Harrisburg High School. The show choir, the Tiger Tones, started their second ever season earlier this year and plan to keep working hard. The group has one of the longest seasons in the school, starting late summer, with competitions going until May. The lineup of 27 students is doing a swing-style show featuring a wide variety of songs: ‘Someone in the Crowd,’ a song from the hit musical La La Land; ‘It Had to be You,’ a ballad appearing in no less than eight movies; and ‘Nice Work (If You Can Get It),’ a tune that now has a musical of the same name, to name a few.

As the season for the Harrisburg H i g h School G i r l s Soccer Team is halfway over, they are looking to end their season on a high note. The team is made of 7th graders to seniors placed on either the junior varsity team or the varsity team.

The soccer season all kicked off August 1 and will end September 23 unless the team qualifies for playoffs. The team is coached by Desiree Parmenter, whose main focus is on varsity, and Whitney Cottrell, whose main focus is on junior varsity, whom both share similar favorite moments of coaching and similar goals. For Cottrell, her goals for the season wasn’t to win every game and beat a certain team, but, “To have lots of team bonding and positivity.”

For Parmenter, her favorite moments well-earned victories. When you win after losing consecutive games, the victory is that much sweeter.

one of the players, Siri Andersen, joined the team and hasn’t played soccer since she was a little kid: “I like playing with my friends, getting to meet new people, and growing as an athlete.”

Serena Uken, another one of the players, shared a personal goal: “I want to be a better teammate, to further my soccer skills to get better outside of high school, and to one day make it to state.” Even though the team was emptyhanded through the middle of September, the players are working hard and trying to get better to improve in games in order to get the win. One player, Anna Lockrem, who plays on both junior varsity and varsity, states, “Getting to play on both teams is good; you play with people at different level and practice with people that push you to get better.”

Looking forward to next year, the team is losing a total of eight seniors that are going off to pursue all their future endeavors in their own directions.

The eight seniors include the following: Madeline Deetz, Lindsay Farrell, Mackenzie Mertz, Sydney Halling, Olga Silchuk, Katrina Keuser, Megan White, and Madeline Souter. They all have experienced similar struggles while being on the team. One last word of advice from Deetz: “To not let losing destroy your hope and confidence because sometimes the score doesn’t reflect how the game actually went.”

underway, and the Tigers are off to a good start.

Brandon White, the head coach, has high expectations for this Tigers team: “Our team’s goal is to win an 11AA State Title and a 11AA ESD Conference Title. We understand that it will take a lot of hard work and commitment for us to accomplish them.”

These goals are what Tiger Nation all want to see; consequently, they are more than possible for the Tigers. The expectations of this team started high, and they will only get higher as Coach White states, “I think we had very high hopes coming into the season, but after the first 2 1⁄2 games I think

those expectations have even increased to a much higher level.” The Tigers have been working extremely hard both in the offseason and at practices, and if they keep up this work, “good things are in the Tigers’ future.” Tiger Football can only get better from here, and if the Tigers follow their game plan, people should be in the right place at the right time. White commented on the mindset the players should have going into each game, as he states, “We feel that if our players can play with a clear mind and a big heart, they will be right in position to battle in each and every game on our schedule.” If this process stands true, the Tigers will accomplish their expectations.

White also commented on the specifics about high school coaching; he mentioned that coaching in high school is like putting together a 1,000-piece puzzle together, but his favorite part about coaching is sorting through the pieces and trying to find those that fit together.” He also said that every year is different and that people have to adapt to it. The state championship is just under a month away on Friday, November 10th, and let’s hope that the ones who will be hoisting up the trophy will be the Tigers.

A “Makerspace” is becoming more commonplace in the Harrisburg School District. This collaborative workspace is meant for creating, learning, exploring, and sharing among learners within each building. Each Makerspace may look a little different, but the mantra Think, Create, Innovate is always the focus.

These first few weeks each classroom has come in to the library to explore our new space and check out some of our new materials and resources. Some popular items include our robots, Osmos, Spheros, Bee Bots, and electronic sets. We also have a lot of building materials such as Lego and K’Nex. Last week we introduced a few engineering challenges with our new Lego table!

This is the 3rd year with a Makerspace at Freedom Elementary. We have shifted from a mobile cart check-out system to permanent spot in our library. Mrs. Tebben, our media specialist, and Mr. Knips, our technology integrationist, work together to create an atmosphere where learners are free to express themselves creatively and work together collaboratively to

Horizon Library Ready To Read LESLEE REILAND The theme in the Horizon Elementary Library is Fairytales.

There are many displays and decorations around the library depicting different fairytale stories. We have two different castles for the students to read in. The students are able to explore their story telling in 3 flannel board centers using characters and items found in fairytales.

They can even design their own castle.

During September and part of October we will be exploring the different genres of books found in our library. The first one is of course fairytales!

Each class will read a fairytale story and then a fractured fairytale that goes with it. A fractured fairytale is a story the students know, like The Three Little Pigs, and changes the characters, setting, points of view or plot. Their story might be how the three little pigs were bad and the wolf was innocent.

Each class will divide into small groups and create their own fractured fairytale.

In late October, we will start reading books from the South Dakota State Library’s Prairie Bud (K-1), Prairie Bloom (2-3), and Prairie Pasque (4-5) lists.

These book lists are created by the South Dakota Library Association and cover a variety of subject matter and genres.

The South Dakota Children’s Book Award encourages children to read and vote for their favorite book. In March, the students will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite books that they feel are deserving of an award.

Students all over the state will be participating in this program.

Throughout the year we will have special Makerspace days. The students will have a chance to be creative and explore making different things using legos, knex, and Osmos.

Since we are a small school and just starting we welcome donations for our makerspace: legos, any type of building items, snap circuits, storage bins, playdoh, craft sticks.

If you are cleaning out your closets, we will take paper and all craft supplies. Thank you for your help.

Growth Mindset MRS. JOHNSON & MS. KROGER The staff at Journey have been working hard to inform our learners and parents about the importance of having a “Growth Mindset” versus a “Fixed Mindset”.

learners have had opportunities to hear presentations given by staff members focusing on “persisting” (not giving up), which is our habit of focus for the month.

We created a “Tree of Persistence” & each learner was able to add their leaf to the tree.

On the leaf, the learners wrote something they will work to not give up on. The tree is displayed in the main hallway as a fun reminder to stay PERSISTENT!

A growth mindset is the belief that we can get smarter through hard work. It’s all about trying hard, using good strategies, and getting the help you need. Our

New And Improved In the Harrisburg School District, we have adopted two new curricula this year. We will be using the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Science called Dimensions. Our Social Studies curriculum is from TCI. Both will help us to meet our South Dakota State

Standards in these subjects.

At Journey Elementary teachers have also started to incorporate guided math into their math time. This helps the teachers to work with learners at their level and help to know what specific skills they each need.

Learning Is EPIC! Journey Elementary has joined Freedom Elementary as the second school to incorporate the EPIC program. EPIC stands for Empowering, Personalizing, Innovating, and Creating. The facilitators have been working hard on helping their learners become personalized learners.

Personalized Learning (PL) is instruction paced to learning needs, tailored to learning preferences and adapted to specific interests of different learners. They are teaching to the learners’ needs using standards as a guideline and curricula

based on student interest. On September 11th and 12th they met with learners and parents for an EPIC empower boot camp where they learned more about the student management system “Empower”.

Learners were able to show parents how they operate in the student management system. Parents received instruction on how to operate the parent side of Empower.

We hope the understanding of how facilitators, learners, and parents operate in the student management system will foster positive learning experiences.

Liberty Elementary Makerspace - Making A Space That Is Unique NICHOLE DREXLER AND ERIN OSTER

Liberty Elementary is in the process of creating a Makerspace learning environment in our library which will include outreach activities to all classrooms. What is a Makerspace? In simple terms, it is a place that allows for creativity and innovation to occur as students engage in learning through hands-on and minds-on experiences.

Learners will be given time to design, create, build and collaborate. Most of the Makerspace resources our students use were made possible by the Liberty PTO, who used their fall fundraiser to purchase programmable robots, circuitry kits, Keva planks, Legos and many other resources that will enhance our students’ learning. In order to have a space that continues to be vibrant and engaging for our learners, we are in need of some general household, craft, and miscellaneous items. Thank you for any donations that you are willing and able to provide. Donations can be dropped off at the Liberty Elementary office.

Building Strong Foundations AARON WEAVER - PRINCIPAL At the beginning of a new school year, teachers spend a great deal of time working with students to teach and reinforce routines and expectations that may have been “misplaced” over the summer months. Each of our schools recognizes the importance of the first few weeks and months of school in helping students realizing their potential both in academic and personal growth.

Put as many things in order as possible the night before.

Keep wake-up routines cheerful, positive and at a consistent time.

Be sure your child eats a healthy breakfast, even if he or she is not hungry in the morning.

Finally, before everyone parts ways for the day, say “Goodbye” to your child and encouraging his or her best efforts during the day. These interactions will help your child begin the day with a positive outlook.

The beginning of a school year is also a great time for families to re-establish their routines, not only with balancing the day-to-day hustle and bustle of the family’s schedule, but also balancing the need for kids to have time to be kids, to demonstrate responsibility and ownership with “family business” items, and time to nurture relationships between siblings, parents, extended family and friends. I am sure we have all had times that we cannot seem to get ahead of the game with our daily and weekly commitments. As a father and educator, I have read a number of number of articles and books that provide guidance with things families can do during the week to establish predictable, effective routines; suggestions that have helped my family in setting priorities and planning our weeks. While they may not all suit your family situation, read through the tips below to see if they help frame daily routines and expectations.

It is not by coincidence that some of the most effective teachers are those who build a community with consistent routines and expectations; this holds true for families who do the same.

To help the household function well in the morning, everyone should know what needs to be done to get ready for the day. Try the following:

As often as possible, work to make a family dinner a priority for your family. Try to eat together, without the distraction of television or other devices. During dinner, the family can share the day’s events and check-in about the day’s highlights and successes.

Encourage everyone to take part in the conversation and work to avoid negative comments or criticisms.

Bedtime: On school nights, children should have a regular, consistent bedtime. Lights may go out at different times for different children in the family, depending on how much sleep each child needs. Consistent nighttime rituals, such as storytelling, reading aloud, and songs ease a child to sleep and help parents avoid the traps we often find ourselves in before bed: “Please! Just one more drink of water!”

I am married to my wife Allison and have two kids, Brooklyn, 2, and Beckett, 11 months. I grew up in Minnesota and my parents live in Marshall, Minnesota. I have one younger sister that works as a charge nurse in the ICU at Sanford.

What are your hobbies? I enjoy playing golf, collect sports cards and hats, and try to go out fishing when I can.

What is your favorite weekend activity? I love to spend time at the lake or play golf.

What is something about you that most people don’t know? I am a Little House on the Prairie (TV show) aficionado.

Harrisburg Liberty Elementary Reading ANGIE CABLE

Harrisburg is fortunate to have many programs to benefit each and every child.

In the Harrisburg Elementary Schools, each building has access to a Reading Specialist to help support students in the area of reading. Assessments are given to help determine which students would benefit from additional reading support.

Building a strong foundation with phonetic skills is essential. I work very hard in responding to students’ needs with interventions and providing students with practice to apply reading strategies and skills. The more practice students have in using and applying these skills, figuring out unknown words can and will become automatic. That is our goal.

Harrisburg uses the Developmental Reading Assessments (DRA) K-5. These assessments are conducted during oneon-one reading conferences with students’ classroom teachers. The DRA indicators and descriptors help look at each specific area of reading: oral reading fluency (expression, phrasing, rate, accuracy) and comprehension (prediction, summarizing, vocabulary, interpretation, reflection and connections).

Students need to score ‘independent’ in all of the above areas before students may move up in level of difficulty.

The NWEA assessment is used K – 12 in the Harrisburg District and assesses student development growth in math and reading.

This assessment also helps teachers identify intentional focuses for each student tailoring each student’s needs in helping students achieve his/her potential.

These two assessments help determine who will receive supplemental support in the area of reading. Typically, the support will be in grades K-2 to provide early intervention

Parents are the most important person in a child’s life when it comes to learning to read.

You, as a parent, have an important role in your child’s success in reading. Modeling reading at home, reading together, and showing enjoyment when reading can make a huge impact on your child. Responding and making connections to text helps students retain and comprehend text, so we encourage parents to make connections and reflect on the text when reading with your child.

Another great thing about Harrisburg Liberty Elementary School is our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). Our PTO has graciously given money to supplement our reading program yet again with leveled books that are perfect for students to practice automaticity, fluency, and comprehension. A wide variety of children’s books are now available and accessible for teachers to utilize and provide a literacy rich environment for our students at Harrisburg Liberty Elementary School.

Harrisburg Elementary Math BRAD YERDON Every elementary school in the Harrisburg School District is fortunate to have a math specialist. The reason we have math specialists is so that students can work on math skills, that students may be struggling with, in a small group setting.

At the beginning of the year all students take a math screener, NWEA, that will

show us what level the students are performing at. Students from kindergarten through 5th grade who qualify can see the math specialist to receive math support.

Students meet with the math specialist for 20 to 30 minutes, three to five times a week, to work on foundational math skills.

Problem Patrol JENNIFER VAN’T HUL Liberty Elementary Student Council is working on a Positive Peer Culture Program. The Problem Patrol is a group of 4th and 5th grade students that are designated to an area of the playground in the morning before school.

At that time, they patrol their area looking for opportunities to be a positive role model.

The students have training in conflict resolution and when it is more appropriate to seek adult assistance.

Each student volunteer on the Problem Patrol are on duty one day a week from 7:50 am until all students have entered the building.

What a great opportunity for our students to make a difference!
