A Different Way To Invest In Our Community ADRIENNE MCKEOWN, PRESIDENT, HARRISBURG ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION AND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE If you’re a regular reader of this column, you’re used to hearing about the value and importance of shopping local, supporting our Harrisburg businesses, and retaining our local sales tax dollars in Harrisburg so that we can reinvest them in our community.

This is not my typical column. Well, not exactly.

Instead of talking about sales tax revenues turning into infrastructure improvements, I want to direct your attention to a different way to invest in the future of Harrisburg. Did you know that there is an organization that provided more than $173,000 of direct support services to benefit the citizens of Harrisburg this year? This financial support benefitted the people of our community—young and old alike—by providing affordable access to services like counseling, financial assistance, and wellness opportunities. It even provided for basic needs by providing shelter and healthy food to families in need.

Where is this help coming from? It might not be from where you expect.

For the past 17 years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with the Sioux Empire United Way in building a stronger community. In various volunteer roles, I’ve helped raise money, increase awareness, and scrutinize where every dollar is spent. I’ve even given my own money to the campaign every year since graduating from college. As part of the larger Sioux Falls community, it was a good thing to do. But until recently, I never realized the impact that the United Way has right here in Harrisburg.

The Sioux Empire United Way funds 89 programs in 33 communities throughout the counties of Lincoln, Minnehaha, Turner, and McCook. And while a bulk of the services are provided through agencies located in Sioux Falls, our very own Harrisburg residents receive a substantial amount of support from those agencies. Here are just a few examples of United Way funding helping the people of Harrisburg in the last year: • 84 children were provided with nutritious, easy-toprepare foods for the weekend through the BackPack Program.

• 21 individuals participated in LifeMarks, an outpatient counseling program addressing the co-occurring (mental health and chemical dependency) concerns of youth, adults, and families.

• 812 adults and children learned the basics of swimming and the importance of water safety, and another 46 children received quality childcare and early childhood education through EmBe. • 129 boys participated in Boy Scouts.

• 42 individuals utilized credit counseling through Lutheran Social Services.

• 35 families received one-time financial assistance for basic needs through Community Outreach.

My point is this: the people helped

by United Way programs aren’t just some nameless, faceless people in the big city. They are our friends and neighbors—fellow Tigers—who are benefiting from the United Way’s mission to improve lives.

The annual Sioux Empire United Way campaign is underway right now. Like most years, the need continues to grow, and a little bit of investment from each of us can help to make our community stronger for years to come. This worked so well earlier this year that we’re doing it again!

The Harrisburg Area Food Pantry used to provide $30 vouchers for additional food or gas. We can no longer afford that due to the 1200% increase in usage in the past few years. However, many of our clients are still in need of more than we can provide.

Sometimes additional food choices are needed ie gluten free food or when someone is lactose intolerant. Many can use items of clothing or baby furniture. While we would like to accommodate, we have no discretionary storage room. In spite of the relatively low cost of fuel, many are in need of gas. And, since cash is always an issue, most appreciate a break from their normal routine.

To make those things possible, we can use your help.

The pantry is collecting $10 gift cards for grocery stores, clothing or department stores, gas stations, movie theaters, fast food restaurants or an establishment of your choosing. Some of our shoppers enjoy sewing. Others are in need of minor household items commonly found at home improvement stores. There are gently used clothing and furniture stores such as the NU2U Thrift Store or Once Upon a Child which offer great strollers, children’s clothing and so on. We would love to have a wide assortment of gift cards available in order to tailor their use to individual needs.

You can be as creative with this as you wish!

Summer is winding down and the park is getting ready for its fall change. Just like the animals and trees of the park the visitor center will look and feel a little different after Labor Day. Starting Tuesday, Sept 5th, the Good Earth State Park visitor center hours will change. The new hours will be Monday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. till 4:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The visitor center will be closed on major winter holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. The park and its trails are open every day from 6:00 a.m. till 9:00 p.m.

Just like the hours at the park, the programing and events are slightly different as well. Labor Day weekend is full of fun things to do. It will start off with a Night Hike on Friday September 1st at 8:00 pm. Then on Saturday there will be a Dragonfly program at 10:00 a.m., Monarch Butterfly Tagging at 2:00 p.m. and Traditional Animal Stories at 7:00 p.m. Sunday we will do some Dutch Oven Cooking at 2 p.m. We will take two hikes on Monday. The first hike will be at 3:00 p.m. and the second at 7:00 p.m. All of these programs are great for the whole family.

After Labor Day Saturday’s is our big day for programing. Saturday September 9th there will be a guided hike all about the plants and grasses of Good Earth State Park. Then at 3:00 p.m. bring your yoga mat down to the park for some outdoor yoga with our certified instructor/volunteer. On Saturday September 16th we will have a Harvest Festival at 4:00 p.m. There will be games, crafts, a self-guided hike, and cooking. Then on Sunday Sept 24th from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. we will learn about taking fall photographs in nature. This will be a guided hike with a local photographer.

Attention all teachers! Good Earth State Park has designed programs just for classrooms and field trips. Jen Nuncio, the park naturalist, can visit your classroom or host your field trip and offers a variety of programs. From the history of the park, Bison, Traditional games, Trees, insects and more. These programs last about 60 – 90 minutes and are allied to the South Dakota content standards. Call soon to schedule a class visit or field trip.

Facebook Group Designed For Residents Of Harrisburg LEAH JANSSEN, ADMIN OF HARRISBURG GENERAL (OF SOUTH DAKOTA) Are you a local business owner? Are you a resident with a need?

Are you looking for ways to grow your business within your community? Are you looking for goods/ services but want to stay local? The secret to both is networking!

But how, and when?

As busy as we all are nowadays with long commutes, church commitments, shuttling our kids around, working part-time jobs, caring for aging parents, keeping up with landscaping… etc., not many of us have the time to attend meetings to network and meet other business professionals like ourselves.

Many have found the key to be using social media, whenever it is convenient!

There are apps that allow users to join after verifying their address, and connect users with their neighbors.

But these apps tend to go unused or underused at best. The one app the majority of us DO use is Facebook, and luckily- it is still free! The key is to grow your audience, and I have already begun that process.

I have created a Facebook group designed

exclusively for residents of Harrisburg. I cannot go in and add you unless we are “friends” on Facebook, but for the privacy of the residents, it is a closed group that you have to request to join. Once you request to join, you are prompted with 2 questions: “Are you a resident of Harrisburg, SD?” and “Which development/community do you live in?”. You must answer BOTH questions to be allowed to join. No information is shared with any other members, and is an informal screening process to make sure the group remains relevant to Harrisburg.

It has grown by word of mouth and has close to 600 members. My goal was for a lightning-fast mode of communication for residents to address issues like: “When is the dump going to be open again?” “What are Harrisburg’s laws on noise after 10pm?” “Does anyone know when the classroom teachers are going to be posted?”, “Has anyone seen my Yorkie? Last seen on…”. It has been a great social connection tool, and has even led to the first annual 100% volunteer Harrisburg Community Clean-Up event.

Local business owners- this could be an untapped resource for you! There is no cost to join, and no catch. I believe in small business and supporting local so that we are able to take pride in and grow our community. I invite you, as a fellow resident of Harrisburg, to join the group. Get a feel for what the

FFA’s Busy Summer Of Community Activities TODD MARKS, FFA ADVISOR Many students stay as far away as possible from school during the summer but not so for many Harrisburg FFA members! On June 17 eight members and Miss Tara Fastert assisted with the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Prime Time Gala in Sioux Falls. FFA members greeted guests, served as hosts to help them find seats and assisted with making the event go smoothly.

Members were rewarded for their efforts with free tickets to the Martina McBride concert following the Gala.

FFA members also assisted with the Granite Threshing Bee in Granite, Iowa the weekend of July 15 & 16.

Members assisted the week before the threshing bee by helping move equipment, load wheat bundles onto wagons, and cleaning up of the event grounds.

FFA members Jackson Klemme, Makoy Ivarson, Ben Olson, and Kayla Smeenk also participated in the tractor parade. A big thank you to members Makoy Ivarson, Grant Koerner, Jackson Klemme, Ty and Kayd Hanisch and Daniel Willems for volunteering to

help at the antique tractor pull on Saturday evening. The tractor pull would not have run as smoothly as it did without the help of these young men.

Members McKenzie Voss, Marrisa Widman, Kaiah Willard, and Molly Fokken learned the meaning of hot and sweaty work by helping Miss Fastert and Mr. Marks bale the straw produced from the threshing bee. A special thank you to the Granite Threshermen’s Association for donating the straw to the Harrisburg FFA to be used at Old MacDonald’s Farm. Most recently, the FFA chapter completed another successful year of organizing and hosting Old MacDonald’s Farm petting zoo at the Sioux Empire Fair.

Over 50 members volunteered with set up, tear down, donating livestock, and doing chores during the fair. The Harrisburg FFA would like to especially thank Farm Credit Services, A&B Business Products, the Freeman, West Lyon, Brandon Valley, Lennox, Tri-Valley, and Alcester/ Hudson FFA chapters for their members who volunteered time to assist us during the fair. We would not have been able to do this without you! A

Bloodmobile Coming To HHS! TODD MARKS, FFA ADVISOR

On Thursday, September 28, 2017, the Sioux Falls Regional Bloodmobile will be on the campus of Harrisburg High School from 7:30am to 2pm.

This will be the 52nd blood drive hosted by the Harrisburg FFA and marks 25 years of visiting HHS. Anyone age 17 and older is welcome to donate blood. If you are 16, you may donate with a signed permission slip from your parents. Sign up for the bloodmobile in the high school office, ag-ed classroom C109, or email Mr. Todd Marks at todd.marks@harrisburg.k12. sd.us. Walk ups are welcome but preregistration is preferred.

These attracted good crowds and provide excellent learning opportunities. We would also like to thank the following for loaning us antique tractors to display during the fair. Orval Larson and Jackson Klemme of Harrisburg, Brianna Skovey of Brandon Valley and the McCook Central FFA Chapter all provided tractors. We received many compliments on the quality of the tractors and they were greatly appreciated by visitors to the fair and the Sioux Empire Fair Board. Thanks again for to all of you who have helped the Harrisburg FFA with community projects this summer and we look forward to continue our tradition of community service throughout the upcoming school year.

Educators Gain New Skills At The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation’s Summer Institutes The NRAEF Summer Institutes give ProStart educators industry skills to take back to the classroom

The NRAEF Summer Institutes offer educators the opportunity to learn from nationally recognized faculty, network with their peers, tour restaurant and food service facilities and receive classroom materials. This professional development allows educators to apply what they’ve learned to their classroom and connect the restaurant industry to thousands of students.

Deb Rombough, HHS FACS Teacher was among teachers from across the nation are taking advantage of their summer break to hone their culinary and restaurant management instruction skills at the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation’s (NRAEF) Summer Institutes, a series of week-long professional development workshops held at culinary schools throughout the U.S. Rombough attended the Level 1 Summer Institute in Chicago, Illinois in June.

The week long training was a great opportunity to prepare for the introduction of the new Culinary Arts program that Harrisburg High School is introducing this school year through he Family and Consumer Sciences Department. Mrs. Rombough states, “This is a wonderful chance for our students to gain valuable insight into the many careers that are available in the culinary field along with the necessary

Level 4 is a spotlight series with topics that include farm-to-plate menus, artisan bread baking and chocolate. Educators who complete Levels 1 through 3, document recent industry work experience and submit model lesson plans, earn the Certified Secondary Food

service Educator credential.

The Tiger Team of the Month The Harrisburg Cheer Team is off to another strong start after working over the summer to prepare for sideline cheer and the first-ever competitive team. Try-outs were held last spring, and a total of 27 athletes in grades 7-12 contribute to the fall squads, which consist of JV sideline football, varsity sideline football, and competitive cheer. Open gyms and team camps were held throughout June and July and the season officially kicked off on July 31.

Many cheerleaders cross-over between the sideline and competitive teams, which involves a great commitment in regard to time and effort. The teams practice, on average, 3 hours each day and cheer at all football games and 10 competitions during the season. Senior Jaci Pieters believes being on both teams has made her a better cheerleader.

She adds, “I like being a part of the performance part of cheer (competitive) and the spirit side of cheer (sideline).”

Sideline cheerleaders look forward to promoting school spirit among the student body, faculty, staff, administration, and citizens of Harrisburg, while also developing loyalty to the school and team. In addition to cheering at the football games, this team is involved with the Tiger Bowl Cheer Camp, Homecoming festivities, various fundraisers and charity events such as raising money and supplies for the Children’s Inn of Sioux Falls and a bake sale to benefit the Edith Sanford Breast Health Institute.

Competitive cheerleaders compete against 16 other schools across the state in Class AA Cheer. The hours of practicing are all in search of two and a half minutes of perfection. The two-minute thirty-second routine is comprised of musicpumping dance and quickly executed elite stunts, mixed with tumbling and a cheer. The cheerleaders traveled to Aberdeen on August 26 for their first competition and the season concludes on October 22 at the State Competition in Rapid City. While there is no home competition this year, the team will perform their routine at the Tiger Bowl and Homecoming football games.

Madisyn and Michaela Heyn, juniors who are on both teams, are enjoying being involved in the sport. “We’re working really hard and competitive cheer has changed all our attitudes. Everyone is stepping it up this year to be able to compete at the highest level. We’re really excited for the changes,” Michaela Heyn said. Come support the Tigers and cheer with the cheerleaders this year!
