Celebrating A Season Of Growth ADRIENNE MCKEOWN, PRESIDENT, HARRISBURG ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION AND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Everywhere you look in Harrisburg, things are growing. I’m sure you’ve heard the half-joke/halftruth statement that in South Dakota, we have two seasons: winter and construction. Well, you don’t have to look too far to find evidence of new construction and growth in Harrisburg this season. As of the time I’m writing this, the first walls of our new grocery store are just going up. There are “diggers” (as my 3-year-old calls them) all over town, tearing up earth to create new housing for our expanding community. New streets have already been built this spring, and other roads are under repair. And, I’m sure many of you gardeners are celebrating the transformation of seeds into plants and vines emerging from the soil. It is a time of growth! But there’s also growth taking place that may not be as obvious. The Harrisburg Chamber of Commerce was thrilled to surpass a major milestone in May when we hit the 100 member mark. But we didn’t stop there. The next month, we added another five members, and we are still continuing to add new members. We’ve hosted four ribbon cuttings in 2017, and we look forward to even more in the near future as we continue
to welcome new businesses to our community. Remember that by joining the Chamber, these businesses are committing to Harrisburg and are supporting our local community programming and projects. Please return the favor by shopping local whenever you can. And speaking of shopping local, the Chamber invites you to join us at one of our Chamber businesses for our Second Annual Harrisburg Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament. This four-person scramble will be held at Spring Creek Country Club on Friday, July 21st with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The $260 entry fee per team includes 18 holes of golf, a cart for each pair, and lunch. There will also be great prizes and fun challenges, including the chance at some amazing hole-inone prizes like airfare for two, a cruise, and more. You don’t have to be a Chamber member to play in the tournament, so put together a team and come network with members of your local business community. Contact Alysia at City Hall at harrisburgchamber@ gmail.com by July 10 to register. Registration is limited to the first 36 teams. Finally, with our limited forms of communication in Harrisburg, I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know that we have growth happening within our religious sector as well. We are blessed in Harrisburg to have several strong worship communities of different denominations. Arise, Harrisburg United Methodist, Shalom
Lutheran, Table of Grace, and The Ransom churches all provide wonderful worship, service, and fellowship opportunities for Harrisburg residents. Soon, we will be adding one more to the fold. For the past nearly 18 months, those who practice the Roman Catholic tradition have been celebrating Mass on Sunday mornings at Harrisburg High School as a “satellite parish” (so to speak) of Holy Spirit Parish in Sioux Falls. Starting this month, Reverend John Rutten has been assigned to the Catholic community living in and around Harrisburg with the intent of exploring the feasibility of forming a parish. Please join us in welcoming Father John to the Harrisburg community. We look forward to partnering with him as he works to provide a new spiritual avenue of growth here. For more information, you can follow the “Harrisburg, SD Catholic Church” group on Facebook. It’s an exciting time to be living in Harrisburg. Growth like this doesn’t happen overnight, and it doesn’t always come easy. But much like the gardens many of you are tending this season, when the new growth does finally emerge, it’s cause for celebration. And as we grow together, we celebrate that Harrisburg continues to be a great place to call home.
