1. Vehicle speeds are only reduced within about 150 feet of each side of the stop sign.

2. Very few drivers actually come to a full stop for these signs.

3. Vehicle speeds often increase between stop signs. Therefore, stop signs are not always the desirable solution to reduce speed.

There are many children on our street. How can we keep them safe from speeders?

Children should never play in the street. When children are old enough to cross streets parents should teach them the hazards involved and the proper, safe way to cross.

Why can’t we get the police to ticket the speeders on our street?

You can, but they need your help. When you notice a speeder, make note of the time, location, vehicle (make, model, year, color, license number) and driver (size, age, sex). Pass this

What is the best way to improve the safety on our streets?

Studies show that most traffic law violators are residents of the neighborhood. These drivers can be reached through neighborhood association newsletters, PTA meetings and social gatherings. Safety can also be improved by asking neighbors not to park cars in the street, if possible. This increases the drivers’ sight distance and decreases the chance of children darting into the street from between parked cars.

Water Restrictions City of Harrisburg Water Restrictions are in effect year round. Watering restrictions apply to the sprinkling, watering, or irrigating of lawns. Trees, shrubs, flower and vegetable gardens may be watered as needed.

These restrictions are strictly enforced and failure to abide by them will result in up to a $200.00 fine.

Currently we are at a Level 2 Restriction which limits watering or irrigating of yards to 2 days per week using the last digit of your physical address.

Water use shall occur before 10:00 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m.

You may sprinkle, water, or irrigate your lawn on the following days if your address ends in: 0, 3, 6 - Monday and Thursday 1, 4, 7 – Tuesday and Friday 2, 5, 8, 9 – Wednesday and Saturday No watering is allowed on Sundays or any day between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS: Keep your garage doors closed at night and when not at home.

Lock your house doors, install a motion light outside or leave your outside lights on at night.

If you keep your vehicle outside, do not leave valuables inside it and keep it locked at all times.

Speed limit in residential areas is 20 mph, please SLOW DOWN. Watch for children and others darting into the street. Watch closely for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Come to a complete stop at all STOP signs and remember to yield at intersections.

Please respect the city parks and equipment and report any vandalism.

Follow the city ordinances regarding animals, watering restrictions, and other city codes to avoid fines.

Report suspicious activity in your neighborhood.

Parking prohibited on or over a sidewalk, parking of any vehicle on any City street for the purpose of camping or sleeping, in front of a mail box, in a no parking zone, and parking against the direction of traffic on through streets. Summer Reading Program Starts This Month SUZANNE ANDERSON With the end of the school year looming that can only mean the annual Summer Reading Program is right around the corner. Animal Ordinance The City of Harrisburg is contracted with the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society in Sioux Falls. Any lost animals or animals in violation of city ordinances will be brought to SFAHS, (605) 338-4441.

Licensing of Pets - Each Pet License Application shall be submitted with a license fee according to the following schedule: Neutered/spayed cat or dog: $ 5.00 Unneutered/unsprayed cat or dog: $ 10.00. Licenses and tags may be obtained at City Hall.

It is a violation for any person who owns or who has under his care any animal to allow said animal to run at large. Any animal shall either be on a leash or tether controlled

by a person, or properly secured to a leash which has been tied to an immovable object, or confined within an enclosure sufficient to keep said animal restrained from escaping such enclosure. The fine for an animal running at large is $100.00.

The City and Sheriff’s Department receive many complaints of barking dogs. It is a violation of regulations for any person owning or possessing any animal to permit such animal to disturb the peace and quiet of the neighborhood by barking, howling, crowing, crying, or making other loud or unusual noises.

Harrisburg American Legion Post 45 To Honor Vietnam Veterans

On Saturday, June 10th at 12:00 p.m.

Post 45 and Susan Irons, Lincoln and Union Counties Veterans Service Officer, will be presenting Presidential Certificates and lapel pins to veterans who served on active duty from November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975. These awards are being presented on behalf the United States Department of Defense’s Vietnam War Commemoration. This program was established to recognize, thank and honor United States military veterans who served during the Vietnam War. As the Lincoln and Union County Veterans Service Officer, Susan felt it was important that our community become a Commemorative Partner

with this program so that we could recognize our local veterans. Veterans from Union and Lincoln Counties and any of the surrounding counties who served on active duty from November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975 are invited to come to this event to be recognized. If you are a veteran that has received a lapel pin and certificate already, please join us in recognizing these veterans.

Family members of these veterans are also invited to attend.

The 2008 National Defense Authorization Act empowers the Secretary of Defense to conduct a program on behalf of the nation that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. This law also authorizes the Secretary to coordinate, support and facilitate federal, state and local government commemorative programs and activities. By Presidential proclamation on May 25, 2012,

Things are changing at Good Earth State Park at Blood Run. The visitor center is near completion inside and out. Split Rock Studios has completed their work on the exhibits. There are hand painted murals line the walls, informational panels tell the story, and there is even an eleven foot lodge house inside the exhibit hall.

The theater screen and speakers are also in. The 4K technology creates an amazing experience for visitors to see the specially designed film.

Good Earth State Park at Blood Run’s visitor center will have a grand opening dedication ceremony on Friday, May 19, 2017 beginning at 12:00 p.m.

This grand opening date is part of the South Dakota State Park’s opening weekend, with free park entrance licenses to all South Dakota state parks. After that weekend, Good Earth State Park at Blood Run will begin requiring park entrance licenses on all vehicles that enter the park.

You can purchase your annual park entrance license at the park for just $30 for the entire year, or a daily pass of $6 per carload is also an option.

In April, Tiger Nation did what it does best, financially assist our numerous extra curricular activities in the Harrisburg district!

18 different groups received funds from the booster club following the April 19th meeting.

Those groups who presented their requests/asked for funds and were awarded dollars based on volunteer hours and involvement in Tiger Nation fundraising were: Baseball, Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Cheer, Show Choir, DECA, Debate, Drama, FCCLA, Football, HOSA, Tiger Robotics, Softball, Tiger Vision, Track & Field, Volleyball, Wrestling and the Summer Performing Arts. Values handed to these groups ranged from $100 up to $4000 with a grand total of $30,000. Along with the $30,000 awarded in April, Tiger Nation was honored to be a part of purchasing a golf cart to be used for all the outdoor activities at Harrisburg such as Soccer, Football, Marching Band, Sideline Cheer, and Track & Field, as well as assist in purchasing our mascot Harris’s new costume. Please consider joining the booster club that makes a difference! Our office expenses are low, so your membership, your volunteer time, directly benefits the students who compete, perform, sing, debate, jump, wrestle, race, shoot, swing, etc, for the Harrisburg Tigers - join us!

Track and field is the high school sport that has a need for every athlete, so consider it a future activity for your child and get a jumpstart on a possible great career. Our Harrisburg elementary and middle school students get access to the field equipment, javelin, shot and discus in the physical education classes (equipment provided by Scheels and Tiger Nation) so our students have an advantage in competing against kids from around the state and region. Members from the Harrisburg F C C L A C h a p t e r j o i n e d over 1,500 members, advisors, and guests who attended the South Dakota FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) Leadership Conference held on April 2-4 at the Denny Sanford Convention Center/ Sheraton Hotel in Sioux Falls. The “Unlimited PossibilitiesIt’s UP to You” themed event was a big success. Harrisburg’s own, Mariah Stensgaard (VP of Membership), in conjunction with other state officers, conducted the meeting.

Members attended workshops, competed in STAR Events, and ran for leadership positions. Jessie Funk, who is an award-winning singer and author of six books, was the keynote speaker on Sunday night during the opening general session. On Sunday and Monday students had the opportunity to attend workshops presented by leadership team members, FCCLA members and officers, and other groups and organizations.

On Monday evening during the second general session, awards and recognition were announced. Harrisburg FCCLA chapter was recognized for achieving the Gold Status Merit Chapter Award.

The Final Countdown JACOB BEZUG With the school year coming to an end, this year’s seniors prepare for graduation. On May 21st at 1:00 PM the high school seniors will graduate; this event will be located in the Harrisburg High School gymnasium.

Some of this year’s seniors shared what their favorite memories in high school included. Mckenna Mathiesen, one of three seniors interviewed, shared, “My favorite memory in high school actually happened this year. My volleyball team won the first AA State Title for Harrisburg High School. It was an accomplishing feeling for the entire team, considering our tremendous season.”

Berndt added that his greatest challenge was getting caught up in all his classes since he was behind from past year’s work. The last question the seniors responded to included how high school has prepared them for their future endeavors. According to Mckenna Mathiesen, “High school has prepared me for my future endeavors by teaching me to be responsible and trustworthy through the MOD-CL program. Honestly, I think no matter what program a student is in, they will gain a sense of responsibility in high school and that is what it is all about. High school teaches learning through mistakes and taking responsibilities for those mistakes.” Camden Berndt included, “I think high school has taught me how to socialize with others, problem solve, and prepare for some type of assessment.”

Megan Parsons concluded that, “High school has prepared me well because it has taught me organization and time management.”

Since this year’s seniors will be graduating soon, the community wishes them well with their future aspirations.

Tiger Reserve Tiger Reserve students held their medical symposium and Code Blue Presentations in April. Grade 2 and 3 Students presented on the Human Body Systems and Tiger Reserve students in grades 4 and 5 experienced the pathway of a medical student and had to present to medical professionals their diagnosis and treatment plan for a patient. A Leap Towards Success SYLVIA KROGER Sometimes the word ‘alternative’ causes an uneasy feeling in people’s minds. It might indicate something bad or have a negative stigma attached to it. But at Leap High School Educational Center, the word ‘alternative’ refers to motivation and success.

A student may have a need for an alternative educational program for various reasons, each being individual and personal. “There are many different reasons a student might come to Leap; we’re concerned with one thing: to help them graduate,” said Mr. Ford.

“Being a senior with not many credits, I was worried and stressed about not graduating this year. One of my options was to come here to LEAP High, and ever since I made that decision, all my stress about graduating on time or not has left. I’m getting homework done faster than ever, and my grades are higher than they have been in the past. Coming to LEAP High was one the best things I’ve ever done,” Jackson Phillips, HHS senior.

“Leap High School is the reason I am going to be successful in my future. Before coming to Leap, my priorities were focused more on how I was going to out of school rather than graduate. With the help of my teachers and peers, I now love school and am going to graduate this year. This is a place you can go and everyone is going to work together to help one another succeed. The Leap High Educational Center is now housed in a separate building directly west of the high school by the tennis courts with approximately 67 students in attendance and four teachers facilitating the curriculum needs. The students find success by setting weekly goals with their teachers. Goals are simultaneously set with student ability in mind as well as the necessary amount needed

“Before going to Leap, I wasn’t going to graduate on time. I was always doing the wrong thing in school and worried more about talking with friends than doing school work, but once I started Leap High, they taught me that if you work hard, it will pay off.

Tigers Maek Their Mark KYLIE LARSON Although the basketball season is over, boys’ basketball coach Scott Langerock felt that many of the team’s goals were accomplished.

Coach Langerock explained, “Last season we really felt getting to the state tournament was a realistic goal when we started.” The group had to make some personal sacrifices during

After the team put in all the hard work, the Harrisburg Boys Basketball team accomplished their goal of making it to state. They are the first boys team in school history to make it to state at the AA level. Coach Langerock has already given the team ideas to improve their skills for next year. He suggested the boys make new personal goals, as well as find new motivations. Before next season begins, the boys are recommended to attend open gyms and get in the weight room, where they can improve their skills. If the team continues to work hard, they will accomplish more goals in seasons to come.

Tigers Score Big At State HAILEY LANGSTON A successful girls’ basketball season ended in a dramatic second place finish. The team’s record of 21-1 reflected their success during the regular season; after defeating Brandon Valley in the district championship, they were ready to take on state. Participating in the state tournament is nothing new for our lady Tigers. The girls as well as coaches looked forward to what the tournament had in store for them this year. “I’m really excited for our seniors. They have worked so hard to get to where they are and to be able to compete in another state tournament is a pretty neat thing. I’m excited for the environment as well...being at state is a whole different, animal and we can’t wait to get out there,” stated Nick Mayer, head coach of the Harrisburg girls basketball team. It was a very exciting season going into state being ranked the number one team in the tournament.

This was a big motivator for our girls to stay determined and not lose track of how far they had come. These girls definitely worked for that place, putting extra time and practice to prove their determination. After two long days of

Cardillo states, “I think it is important to help show and teach students not just with content but also about possible job opportunities.” Cardillo is also always looking for ways to improve the science courses in the high school; she keeps trying to improve the current classes and add new classes at the high school. Cardillo said that, “Adding more courses is always a goal of the science department!” Because Cardillo is known for challenging and promoting hard work in the classroom, the kids are constantly working to their fullest extent. Under Cardillo’s mentorship, the students learn work ethic and the value of an education, “Students need to always be lifelong learners and read to educate themselves.” With Cardillo as their teacher, the students learn the rewards of learning, studying, and working together. Accepting humbly, Mrs. Cardillo is very honored to receive this award from Sanford for her hard work.

HHS Celebrate My Drive Gives Back Almost two years ago, the students and community of Harrisburg were awarded a “Celebrate My Drive” grant in the amount $100,000 from State Farm Insurance.

Since that wonderful day, the grant committee has made an award to 38 groups affecting more than 8000 school and community members. From track meets and baseball teams to veterans and children, the grant funds have touched the community in lasting ways.

Now, the Celebrate My Drive committee has decided to turn attention to solely charitable organizations. If your organization is doing good work for those in need you may submit a proposal by contacting Kevin.Lein@k12.sd.us.

You will receive proposal protocols and forms to submit.

A Hero Among Us JACKSON SCHROEPPEL Harrisburg High School assistant principal Ryan Rollinger was recently awarded the Carnegie Medal; the Carnegie Medal is awarded to individuals in the United States and Canada who risk their lives to an extraordinary degree, saving or attempting to save the lives of others. Mr. Rollinger was recognized by

Mr. Rollinger, who is a Harrisburg High School alum, has been a part of the staff since 2003. The entire community is grateful for his heroism, bravery, and loyalty to the Harrisburg School District.

Mr. Rollinger had the opportunity to fly with the Blue Angels this past summer.

State Student Council Convention Recap SHERWIN DISTOR

Harrisburg High School attended the 30th Annual State Convention of the South D a k o t a S t u d e n t Council Association (SDSCA), which was held in Rapid City, SD, on April 9 – April 11, 2017. The SDSCA Convention included 916 students and advisors from 62 high schools across the state. SDSCA Executive Director, Gary Linn, stated “It is so exciting to see this event grow bigger and bigger every year”, “To know that student leaders are excited about becoming stronger leaders in their schools, communities, and in their adult lives. This is a very rewarding feeling for us that work with these students on a daily basis. It is a great way for students, advisors, and councils to network with each

other and learn what other schools are doing.”

The South Dakota Student Council Association, which is co-sponsored by the South Dakota High School Activities Association, offers an opportunity for student council members to exercise and enhance their leadership skills.

Focusing on the theme “Lead Us West”, the SDSCA Convention utilized a combination of breakout sessions and large group instructional presentations by their guest speaker and workshop presenters, which were focused on different aspects of leadership. Mayor Steve Allender presented the opening welcome address on Sunday evening. Monday’s speaker was Billy Riggs from Dripping Springs, Texas.

As a highly skilled orator and entertainer, Billy moves audiences to action with his message of hope and inspiration.

The convention also featured a state-wide community service project. This project made over 60 fleece blankets to disperse among communities throughout the state. These blankets will be given to

women/children shelters, hospitals, and nursing homes to aid those who need some help.

The convention activities included the annual business meeting of the SDSCA and the election of the Association’s 2017-2018 state officers, as well as the election of the officers for each of the Association’s seven regions.

Elected to 2016-2017 SDSCA state and region offices from Harrisburg High School include the following: Junior Matthew Harris as Spirit Point Region President and Sophomore Allison Preator as Harrisburg High School Representative to the region council.

Senior Alexander Auch earned the distinct honor of being named to the All-State Student Council and the Harrisburg High School Student Council was named one of the Outstanding Student Councils in the state.

Perhaps the most inspirational moment during the State Convention occurred as part of the Closing General Session when the student councils presented their checks for money raised as part of the SDSCA Statewide Spring

The Sun Came Out for Annie

Harrisburg High School was proud to perform Annie as their spring musical this year. After carrying out Anne Frank, a more serious play, and Anne of Green Gables, a heartwarming one act, Annie brought a lighter tone to the theater and its many visitors. Since the group rehearsed for around two and a half months, the production was ready to be accompanied by an audience. The first audience was a special showing for the district’s 5th graders. This was a good experience for the actors and crew to have a different type of audience and make sure the musical appealed to the kids’ imaginations. Although the show was a big hit, this did not mean there were no challenges. Kailey Bechtold, who played the lead character Annie, thought that the biggest challenge of this production was having our director “...out on maternity leave for three weeks.” This musical was her vision; quickly learning everything before she left was challenging. Kailey not only loved running lines backstage, but also took joy in trying out different accents. Autumn Spyksma, one of the techies who focused on sound, thought that the time commitment in something like this was the most challenging part, saying, “It takes a lot of commitment and effort, but it is all totally worth it in the end.” Autumn enjoyed making props and organizing the prop table in her free time. Although it had its challenges, Annie came alive into a wonderful musical performance and brought an abundance of audience members and cast members together during the process.

Support Professional Of The Year TAMMY ADNEY Suzanne Tecklenburg was honored on April 8th 2017 in Pierre as the South Dakota Education Association’s education support professional of the year. Mrs. Tecklenburg is the North Middle School Librarian and has been with the Harrisburg School District for the past ten years.

She acts as the building librarian at NMS. As such, she oversees the entire spectrum of library services in that building, including acting as a building leader. Susie orders all our resources. She is very knowledgeable about books the students may need, and those they will enjoy as part of their leisure reading. Susie has established most her nonfiction collection in an eBook format. She has coordinated with teachers to make sure the nonfiction collection has multi-user copies of curriculum related titles, an example being our eBooks on ancient Greece. Susie also helps maintain and set up our student Overdrive eBook accounts every fall. Susie is very proficient with our online resources.

She can train both staff and students on the use of these resources, and will help introduce units in a classroom setting, so the students know which resources

will be most helpful to them.

I love seeing Susie in action with one of the classes, as her enthusiasm, friendliness, sense of humor, and knowledge help her get students ready to jump into their assignment. In addition to that she is a great help with the school’s one to one program and is a great asset to students that may need help with their devices. She is such a great resource to HNMS , she loves her job and it shows. It is great to see her interacting with students, teachers, or working and collaborating with the tech integrationist to make sure that the library is being used to its full potential. After winning this award for the state of South Dakota, Susie will be entered for a chance to win the national support professional of the year.

Harrisburg North Middle School

North Middle School Choir Department had a winter full of honors choir events.

South Dakota ACDA honors choir was held in Rapid City on January 21st. North Middle School had 14 students qualify. The weekend was spent working with guest conductors and a final performance at the Rapid City Performing Arts Center. Students attending were: Jordyn Osmond, Jaydyn Fikse, Rachel Roach, Anna Yee, Grace Starr, Natalie Pepper, Ellysia McElroy, Noah Norwine, Abigail Beaumont, Jada Smith, Kobey Mammone.

On February 9th, six North Middle School students took part in the SDSU Elementary Festival Choir. This event was directed by Dr. Maribeth Yoder White and held at the SDSU Performing Arts Center. Students participating were: Meghan Hanson, Sydney Hieb, Siri Larson, Brooklyn Salzwedel, Rylan Snyder and Maggie Tschetter March 1st brought together middle school students from the tri state area to Brandon’s Celebration of Music Festival. Six North Middle School students took part in the choral portion of this event. These students were Tuba Ali, Natalie Pepper, Halima Niazi, Noah Norwine, Jacob Stevens, Gabrielle VanVeldhuizen.

On March 6th, North Middle School hosted the SDMEA Elementary Choir Festival.

This event brought over 100 students to the North Performing Arts Center for a day of making music. North had 19 students who participated in this state wide choral event.

Our last honors choir of the year was held in Minneapolis for the National ACDA Honors Choir. These esteemed choirs consisted of students from all 50 states. 6 students qualified for this prestigious event in

Elementary Honors Choir and Middle School Honors Choir. Students attending were: Erika Starr, Brooklyn Salzwedel, Meghan Hanson, Abigail Beaumont, Rachel Roach, Jordan Borges.

This upcoming summer, North MS has 6 students who have qualified for the Carnegie Hall Performance Series Honors Choir. These students include: Grace Starr, Miriam Bart, Rachel Roach, Jada Smith, Rylan Snyder, Trinity Petersen.

Along with the honors events, North Middle School Fine Arts has produced three theatrical productions. These include the fall musical “Pirates of Penzance”, the Variety Show and our spring dinner theater show “School of Broadway”. We are pleased that throughout our theater seasons, we have worked with over one hundred students. These roles include tech roles in the light and sound booth, stage managers, actors, performers and artists with set design.

Our North Middle School Show Choir, Refractions performed “Bring the Sing” a show based on the William W. Purkey quote, “You’ve gotta dance like there’s nobody watching, Love like you’ll never be hurt, Sing like there’s nobody listening, And live like it’s heaven on earth.” This auditioned group of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students was comprised of 49 singer/dancers under the direction of Melissa Fikse and choreographed by Brenna Lee. The 5 piece band was directed by Kerry Reuer and comprised of 7th grader students.

Refractions performed at Harrisburg Showchoir Showcase, Crusader Classic, North MS Pops Concert, and Sing All About It. Refractions finished the season undefeated and took home Grand Championship awards at both of the competitions attended.

Students Excel In Fine Arts Opportunities Throughout the school year Harrisburg students excelled at fine arts opportunities at all levels of education.

A brief overview of their seasons follows…

On February 9th, 41 Harrisburg elementary and middle school students traveled to South Dakota State University in Brookings to perform in the elite SDSU Festival Honor Choir.

Nearly 700 students audition each year and only 180 students are selected.

The middle school programs have also been busy throughout the year.

North MS Choir consists of gradelevel choirs and a show choir. The choir has performed at a Sioux Falls Stampede game and a senior center.

The department has also hosted a variety show and produced The Pirates of Penzance with over 50 cast and crew members. The NMS Show Choir competed at twice and brought home grand champion awards at each. Over 50 students were part of the team.

On March 18th, five Harrisburg North MS students traveled to Brookings to participate in “Flute Day” at SDSU. They joined flute players from all around South Dakota and performed as part of

Endeavor Talent Extravaganza LISA M NORRIS Endeavor Elementary held their fourth annual talent show on March 30, at 7:00 pm, in the school gymnasium.

There were fifty acts that had auditioned for a place in the show. Twenty-one of those acts received a spot to showcase their talent. To bring some added fun, the staff did a Moana mashup

during the dress rehearsal.

Also, performing in the show were Expressions, Student Council and Jambo Djembe.

The gym was packed with family and friends cheering on their participant. Emcees for the event were Kyle Muth and Lindsay Wurth. They did an outstanding job!

Dawson Lee (7th grade, baritone) and Jack Sutton (7th grade, tenor sax) were selected to represent Harrisburg North MS in the 2017 SDMEA Middle School All-State Band.

Over 500 students across the state of South Dakota auditioned for only 200 spots. They performed a SOLD OUT concert at Huron HS on March 4th.

Gavin Aasheim (7th grade, percussion), Madison Dick (7th grade, tuba), Stewart Nickel (8th grade, trumpet), Beatrice Okken (7th grade, french horn), Emma Rangel (7th grade, flute), and Michael Ryan (7th grade, baritone) were selected to represent Harrisburg North MS in the 2017 Celebration of Music Festival. They performed with other talented musicians from South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota at a concert at Brandon Valley HS on March 1st. Great job!

South Middle School The South MS Choir program consists of choir, chamber choir, and show choir. Over 110 students make up the choir with 10 students in the auditioned Chamber Choir. The Chamber Choir toured Harrisburg and Sioux Falls with a highlight of performing at A Prairie Christmas with the HS Choir. The Show Choir competed at Emmetsburg, IA and Roosevelt in Sioux Falls, SD, placing first runner-up in Iowa. Thirtyfive students participated in the choir and pit band.

Additionally, 25 students took part in the play The Scheme of the Driftless Shifter and 6 students participated in the Brandon Celebration of Music Festival.

South Middle School Band sent 6 students to the Celebration of Music Festival in Brandon, SD, including Hailee Collier, Alyssa Hanson, Bree Lee, Calvin Corbine, Eli Schipper, Hadley Marquardt. They rehearsed in a director-nominated honor band, and performed a concert for the public.

Thirty-two students participated in our jazz band this year. That is up from 24 students last year, and 9 the previous year.

Three students auditioned for, and were selected to be in, the SDMEA South Dakota Middle School All-State Band this year including Alyssa Hanson, Calvin Corbine, and Hadley Marquardt.

They were part of a 200 member select band featuring students from across South Dakota.

“I Can…Make Smart And Healthy Choices!”

LIBERTY 5TH GRADE TEAM At Liberty Elementary, the fifth graders are currently participating in a 6-week program in their Guidance class that teaches them about the hazards and side effects of using drugs. During this program, they had a guest speaker, Deputy Johns from the Lincoln County Sherriff’s Department, who was able to join them and share real-life situations and consequences for using drugs.

We interviewed a couple students from each fifth-grade class about what

they learned from this experience and wanted to share their thoughts with you.

5th Grade Teachers: You are in the “I Can” Program in your guidance class where you are learning how to make healthy lifestyle choices and how to resist negative peer pressure. (1) What is one thing that you have learned so far and (2) how are you going to use this knowledge to make healthy choices in the future, especially as you get older?

Are there any things that you’re worried about going into middle school?

“I am worried about forgetting what class I have next and forgetting my ID,” responded Ariana.

“Getting to classes on time,” joked Zander.

“Getting my assignments done on time,” said Kaitlynn.

“Being organized and staying on track,” stated Kaeli.

Freedom 5th graders will be attending a middle school transition day on May 11. They will get to see what a day looks like in the middle school and ask any questions. We are sad to see them go, but excited for their next step in their educational journey.

What things will make you successful in middle school?

Anabell (5M): “One thing I have learned so far is that people who make tobacco are aiming for us to make money. I am going to use this knowledge in the future by staying away from anything that is dangerous or unsafe.”

Brooke (5G): “One thing I have learned so far is to never get into a car with somebody who has drugs in the front seat. I promise I will never drink and drive or smoke.”

Josiah (5S): “Something I learned is to try and not be someone who shrugs off drinking. I want to help prevent. I know that I won’t be forcing a person to drink too much or some at all. I am hoping to help prevent drugs and drinking.”

Logan (5M): “One thing I have learned so far is that it is not okay to make bad decisions, like smoking or doing drugs even though you know they are bad for you. I will not do drugs because I know

it can hurt your body and your health.”

Dakota (5G): “I’ve learned that alcohol can ruin your brain forever. I will make sure that I don’t … use drugs.”

Hailey (5S): “I have learned what alcohol can do to the body and how it affects it. I can use this knowledge when I am under pressure in a drinking situation.”

We’d like to thank the Lincoln County Sherriff’s Department for the curriculum and Deputy Johns for making this opportunity available to our students and for encouraging them to make grrrreat choices as they continue through middle and high school. We’d also like to thank Mrs. Van’t Hul for making this program a success for our fifth graders!

South Middle School Presents Showcase Night Our annual Showcase Night is coming up on May 9th from 4:30 to 6:30 PM. The HSMS Show Case is a night of reflecting on all the talents and accomplishments of our kids. We will have performances (Choir, band, dance and individual talent performances), Genius Hour Presentations, Oral Interp Presentations, Robotics Challenge, PE/Strength Challenge, Visual Arts Exhibit and we feature academic Presentations. This evening is also an opportunity for our incoming 5th grade students and their families to see our school and attend a Middle School 101 session!

Dinner and spirit wear for purchase sponsored by PAWS. New in 2017: New night and time! Show Case will be on a Tuesday night this year from 4:30 to 6:30 pm!
