Spring Has Sprung!

I am excited that spring is coming to Harrisburg! I hope you are too!

With spring and summer comes the opportunity to get out and reengage with your neighborhood, enjoy our parks, take nice walks and enjoy all that Harrisburg has to offer! It also offers the opportunity to volunteer and get involved in city-wide activities and events!

Volunteering is a great way to meet other families in Harrisburg and help establish a real sense of “community.” We understand that the best form of leadership is to lead by example, so in spring of

2016, the council and I launched a new city policy allowing city staff to volunteer up to 24 hours a year serving their favorite causes. We have had several employees take on this opportunity and we are very proud of their efforts!

Have you ever wondered, “How can I make a difference!”? Well, I’m here to tell you that you CAN and those that volunteer DO make a difference by volunteering on our city boards, with youth organizations, in your church, in the school district, during our annual Harrisburg Days, on the Fire Department or any other great causes where our residents proudly serve. This year, we even have an independent, volunteer

group who pulled together over social media to join forces with an organization that holds an annual trash clean/pick up day! If you are looking to get active, there are always opportunities in our schools, with organizations holding summer events, helping at the Food Pantry, mentoring our youth or agreeing to teach Junior Achievement, among many, many others.

Our residents are one of the main factors that makes Harrisburg great! The best way to feel involved is to GET INVOLVED. Mayor Julie

It’s In Your Blood To Save A Life KYLIE ANDERSON Harrisburg High School hosted the blood drive on Thursday, March 9th, outside the main HHS entrance.

Students and staff signed up in the office if they were interested in participating. A donor must be 17 years old; otherwise, they can donate if they are 16 with a signed parental consent form. Donors must exhibit good general health and weigh at least 110 pounds in order to donate. It is also recommended to eat and drink plenty of fluids prior to donating blood.

2016 Drinking Water Report Water Quality

Last year, the City of Harrisburg monitored your drinking water for possible contaminants.

This brochure is a snapshot of the quality of the water that we provided last year.

Included are details about where your water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state standards. We are committed to providing you with information because informed customers are our best allies.

Water Source We serve more than 5,000 customers an average of 306,000 gallons of water per day. Our water is groundwater that we purchase from another water system. The state has performed an assessment of our source water and they have determined that the relative susceptibility rating for the Harrisburg public water supply system is medium.

As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity.

Contaminants that may be present in source water include: Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife.

Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants.

The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800426-4791).

Inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally-occurring or result from urban stormwater runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming.

Pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses.

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immunocompromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy,

If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children.

Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. The City of Harrisburg public water supply system is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components.

When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your

water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/ safewater/lead.

Detected Contaminants The attached table lists all the drinking water contaminants that we detected during the 2016 calendar year.

The presence of these contaminants in the water does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. Unless otherwise noted, the data presented in this table is from testing done January 1 – December 31, 2016 The state requires us to monitor for certain contaminants less than once per year because the concentrations of these contaminants are not expected to vary significantly from year to year. Some of the data, though representative of the water quality, is more than one year old.

Lewis & Clark Regional Water System 2016 Water Quality Summary In 2016 We Delivered Over 5.4 Billion Gallons Of Water To 13 Of Our Connected Member Systems.

Lewis & Clark water originates from wells that tap into an underground source adjacent to the Missouri River. This source is called the Missouri: Elk Point Aquifer. After treatment the water quality is very good. Lewis & Clark does extensive testing for contaminants in our water and only the few items listed below on the Table of Detected Contaminants were found to be present in reportable quantities. The level of these contaminants is below what would be considered to be harmful.

Ocegueda Competes In State Poetry Contest On Monday, March 13, 2017, Elizabeth Ocegueda competed in the South Dakota Poetry Out Loud State Finals that was held at Edison Middle School in Sioux Falls. Ocegueda is a sophomore at Harrisburg High School and is the daughter of Jaime and Marie Ocegueda. Poetry Out Loud is a National Program that encourages students from across the nation to engage in poetry recitation. Students in Mrs. Kama Konda-Varilek’s English classes participated in classroom activities related to Poetry Out Loud. “Often times poetry gets a bad rap--it’s too boring, hard to understand, etc.

I have a love for the written word and want students to experience a wide variety of poets and poems. Bringing aspects of the Poetry Out Loud program into my classroom allowed me to do just that” Konda-Varilek stated.

Ocegueda participated in Mrs. Konda-Varilek’s class before competing in the local contest.

After being awarded the local winner, Ocegueda video recorded her poetry recitations in hopes of being chosen to compete in the top eight at state.

She achieved her goal and performed the following poems live for a panel of four judges: “El Olvido” by Judith Ortiz Cofer, “Revenge” by Letitia Elizabeth Landon, and “Negative” by Kevin Young. When reflecting

on the experience, Ocegueda said, “Poetry is so underrated in our society, and coming together with other young poets to express our love for poetry was a blast!” Ocegueda stated.

The state winner was returning state champion Maddie Lukomski from Lincoln High School, and the second-place winner was Gabriel PulliamSanchez from Little Wound High School. Lukomski will compete for a $20,000 grand prize at National Poetry Out Loud in Washington, D.C. on April 2526, 2017. The tennis s e a s o n began March 13, strong as ever.

According to Mathew Termansen, head tennis coach at Harrisburg High School, he has high hopes for his team this year. Mr. Termansen states, “Something that we will emphasize this year is our doubles play. With our athleticism, we can compete with other teams that have a lot more experience. We are going to spend much of our practice time working on doubles. At our postseason tournaments, doubles are worth the most points, so if we can improve there, we can start to catch a few teams in overall points.” Playing smarter than other teams seems to be the name of the game this season. With new seasons, come new challenges. Mr. Termansen emphasized that the challenges this year are not to be seen. He will rely on his experienced players to perform and progress over the season, while developing the younger players in practice; he plans to see a lot of fierce competition going into this season. Mr. Termansen looks to improve the program by setting goals for his team and for his players individually.

Even though Mr. Termansen is still without an overall team win, he is confident this year that he will surprise some teams that would otherwise look right past the Harrisburg Tigers. Mr. Termansen takes pride in our team’s athleticism, and he will use this to develop their fundamentals and progress their team. In the end, it is looking like the Tiger tennis team will have a great season.

The team is looking forward to the opportunity to go to state again this year. Spring Creek serves as the practice location, where the team works on their golfing abilities most every day after school.

According to Kali Gottsleben, the head coach of the girls ‘golf team, “The girls will put in a lot of quality time this year to improve their standings.” The girls finished the season in the middle of the pack last year.

Gottsleben says, “They will continue to work on improving on our attitudes, efforts, and scores from last year.” Attitude in the game of golf can make or break a round; this is an improvement lesson that every golfer needs to learn. This upcoming season the team is looking forward to the returners and the newcomers coming into the program. Gottsleben is excited to watch the returners continue to excel and push the youth to learn the game of golf.

The accomplishments that the team is looking forward to is focusing on their game and taking that drive that needs to be taken. There are some challenges that are going to have to be faced in this coming year, which will help them take the next step in AA golf. According to Gottsleben, “They are now in the swing of things moving up a level, and this year they want the golfers to be comfortable so they can chase some of the best golfers in the state to help their game.”

Even with the challenges this coming season, all of Tiger Nation will be rooting for the girls to do well this season.

New Year, New Sports MICHAELA HEYN Harrisburg High School will offer new athletic sports for the 2017-18 school year, including gymnastics a n d competitive cheer.

Jim Altenburg, the HHS Athletic Director, states, “As our school increases in size, it is important to diversify our extracurricular offerings to increase the opportunity for participation.”

With new sports, students will increase in the percentage that they participate. Students will benefit by becoming more involved, growing in maturity, and forming new relationships with others. To prepare for

If someone were to attend any of the Tiger boys’ basketball games this season, it would be noticed that there is a new addition to the starting lineup, 5-year-old Emmett Zorr. While every game night the players battle to finish above their opponent, Emmett battles every day, and has for the past five years, to finish above his health-related challenges. Emmett was diagnosed with cancerous Rhabdomyosarcoma at the age of three, and since then, he’s had two cancerous lumps under his right eye. The doctors shrunk the first bump with chemo and radiation; the second one continued to grow even with chemo treatments. On October 27th, 2016, Emmett underwent a fourteen-hour surgery in Chicago with hope of removing the tumor and reconstructing his cheek. It was unclear whether the surgery would be successful or if Emmett would survive. However, this 5-year-old fighter came out on top and survived with a successful surgery, and the doctors saved his right eye. Each time Emmett endured treatment for his challenges, he has prevailed and shown his courage and strength through every procedure.

To help the Zorr family, the boys’ basketball team has put on fundraisers to help financially. Their most successful fundraiser was a raffle and burger feed that raised $12,000. For this, the team received donated items for the raffle, and two local businesses donated money for a Scheel’s gift card. When Mr. Langerock, head coach of the basketball team, was asked about Emmett’s impact on the team, he said that “[Emmett] brings a desire and excitement to the program and our guys feed off that.

They have seen how much Emmett and his family have been through each day and love the fact that he wants to spend time with us.” He also stated how humbling it was to see Emmett wanting to be and enjoying being a part of what they do; they are thankful for his presence. “Seeing a kid battle for each day gives perspective to what small struggles we go through on the court and in our own personal lives. It’s been awesome to see Emmett and our guys build relationships that are genuine and meaningful.” Additionally, Emmett and Langerock have their own “pre-game good luck ritual,” as stated by Langerock, of rubbing their bald heads. “Emmett will be part of our program as long as he wants.” A GoFundMe page was created for the Zorr family and can be found at the link below, also located on the high school website. With state coming to an end, the Harrisburg bowling team completed their season. In an interview with Marla Paulsen, who is the Harrisburg

bowling coach, she stated, “The Varsity boys were 5-6 in 7th place this year and the Varsity girls were 8-3 in 3rd this year.” The boys struggled during their season this year, but there is always room for improvement; the girls, however, had a very good season, placing third in the state. Paulsen seemed very confident in the team lineups for state, saying “The lineups that we had this year seemed to work great. Each team seemed to work together and help each other with their game.”

Looking forward to next year, Paulsen states, “Our spare shooting is mostly the problem that we seem to share. Consistently on hitting our shots on the first shots needs a little help also.” The boys lost in state for that reason, but there is always next year. For next season, she explains the areas she would like them to improve on, “To work on for next season, reading the lane conditions and patterns to know that

Although she states the weak points, Paulsen also explains the strong points of the team, “The teams are great in helping each other on the lanes and encouraging all bowlers. What my husband (Glen Paulsen, Coach) and I love about our Harrisburg bowlers is the friendships that they make with the bowlers from other schools. They understand that they are competition, but still can be friends and encourage them also.” Next year appears promising as the team welcomes new bowlers from middle school to help them bowl in high school tournaments.

Music Destined For Chicago COLE HANSEN In late April, the band and choir will be leaving on their biannual trip, organized by the Harrisburg Band and Choir Boosters, which will take them to Chicago; in other years, they’ve visited Texas.

This year’s trip will transport the group in charter buses to perform at a suburban Chicago high school performing arts center. The group will not be going to Chicago just to perform, though; the members will also go to other activities such as taking a river boat cruise, attending a Blue Man Group concert, visiting the Navy Pier, and going to the observation deck of Willis Tower. Mr. Groon, the Harrisburg High School band director, says that the primary focus of the trip is to “provide an educational experience outside of the classroom” and “to tie together history, arts, and performance to create an exceptional experience for students.” The band and choir are grateful for this terrific opportunity.

Prom: ‘A Roaring Good Night’ MACKENZIE PETERSON As spring approached in the Harrisburg community, prom was a major topic that came to people’s minds.

Since this year’s prom approached fast, I sought out to find out more about this extravagant event and the preparations put into it. Theme, expenses, and participants were important factors to think about as the day, March 25, approached.

Prom is a celebration that many people have enjoyed going to over the years. Before prom drew near, it was important to have all the necessary materials to make this year’s prom great. This included having decorations that matched a theme. When thinking about the theme, the prom committee voted on the top choice from three selected ideas. For prom 2017 the theme was ‘A Roaring Good Night’.

This included the following: balloons, lighting, streamers, DJ, etc. With the vast decorations that were incorporated, the greatest expense went towards the DJ and lighting. The DJ made the dance have a fun, exciting atmosphere; also, the gym used lots of accent lighting for grand march. Preparing the commons and gym was important to set the mood for the night.

While hard work went into preparing for a great night, the committee strived for a great turn out. Prom committee advisor, Lisa Cardillo, stated, “Around 350 individuals attended, so I expect numbers to be higher than in years past.” As our school continues to grow, the number of students expected to go to prom will continue to rise. This will only lead to a bigger night filled with more fun and memories. With this in mind, the prom committee hoped to present a beautiful grand march and dance for the students to enjoy.

This year marks the beginning of one of the most underrated activities in high school: show choir.

Show choir combines choir, popular music, and dance into an activity where schools can compete with one another. HHS’s choir director, Mrs. Gould, said, “It gives choral students an additional option of participating in an extracurricular activity that showcases their specific talents.” She stated that even though our show choir is very small this year, it has been a lot of fun. She did face some challenges, though, setting a budget, finding good music, and hiring a choreographer.

Show Choir is not completely foreign to the Harrisburg School District; both middle schools have sponsored a show choir for a few years. Many of the students that are in those show choirs want to join a high school show choir, which is why the activity started this year instead

of next school year, when it was originally planned. The show choir started in November, which is much later than most start dates.

Mrs. Gould is hoping to fix this in the future: “We will have auditions before the school year is over; we will have the show planned and blocked before school starts in the fall and hope to have a show choir camp at some point during the summer to learn the music AND the choreography!” Even though the Tiger Tones faced some challenges earlier in the season, they have already attended two competitions so far and have taken home trophies from both. They attended one last competition on March 18th at Washington High School. They will also perform at the Choir’s Spring concert on May 2nd.

Driving 2N2 HANNAH HATCH Celebrate My Drive is a committee that Harrisburg High School took part in last year that consists of many opportunities and activities. Some members of the FCCLA committee helped the Harrisburg S c h o o l District win one hundred thousand dollars for a contest. Kennedi Miller, a member of FCCLA and the drive 2N2 campaign, stated “We won the 100,000 dollars because we made a video for State Farm showing that we are committed to driving safe. Out of the schools nationwide that entered the contest, we ended up having the video with the most winning votes.”

The Celebrate My Drive committee helps both the high school and the community. “It helps the community

because we get to teach others through a presentation. It is great because you get to give out bikes and helmets to the kids who need them the most within that school and community,” said Kennedi Miller. Since the Celebrate My Drive committee has won the one hundred thousand dollars, they have been putting it to good use. Mrs. Kern, who is one of the leaders of the Celebrate my Drive committee, stated, “Celebrate My Drive has awarded thousands of dollars to school and community groups. In addition, my FCCLA members are starting to educate our community and surrounding schools about safe driving.”

Traits like responsibility, i n q u i s i t i o n , enthusiasm, and independence are the fruits of this newly grown tree. Teachers keep teaching until the students understand, putting all their knowledge and experience into teaching the students.

It is not only the teachers that make such education wonderful but even the quota of students’ participation must be filled. Because of these amazing efforts by both students and teachers, this system of education has become the king of all.

Endeavor Elementary Fairy Tale Courtroom Premiers LISA M NORRIS Thirty-six talented Endeavor Elementary students took the stage on Feb. 26th at 7:00 pm and premiered the very first play for the school…Fairy Tale Courtroom. The play was filled with hilarious moments, as well as spot on courtroom scenes. A variety of fairy tale characters took the stand as witnesses in the trial against the Big Bad Wolf, played by Jeremiah Hottmann and the Evil Queen, played by Kaylen Harris.

The attorney’s in the case were played

by Avery Bechtold, Will Munson and Paydyn Peterson. They did a wonderful job portraying District Attorneys, as they had some very intense lines. A jury filled with students, that each brought a fairy tale character to life, captivated the audience with their humor, and unique personality. The Judges, Baliffs, and Court Clerk, also played a large part in the plays success. The entire cast did an amazing job!

The play was directed by Laura McClung, Amanda Harris and Lisa Norris. Mrs. Norris has been running

a theatre group (IGNITE) after school for several years, and wanted to take things to the next level. IGNITE is all about theatre, oral interpretation and improvisation. There are a lot of kids at Endeavor Elementary who have a passion for the performing arts.

Unfortunately, there are not a lot of opportunities for the students who want to pursue the fine arts at this level.

By bringing a play to the elementary level, Mrs. Norris wanted to open some doors for these students. It also allows students to experience theatre before they join the Middle and High School programs. Mrs. Norris plans to establish a Theatre Group and continue to build the program in the future with the help of Mrs. McClung and Mrs. Harris.

Q: What is Genius Hour?

This year, Mrs. Petersen and Miss Ruter have incorporated Genius Hour into their classroom. Genius Hour allows students an opportunity to discover/investigate one of their passions and reflect on/share their learning with others. This idea stemmed after Miss Ruter had read Pure Genius: Building a Culture of Innovation and Taking 20% Time to the Next Level. For one hour each week, learners have the time to read, research, plan and design their Genius Hour Project. They can take on any topic they are passionate about, and create a project they can share with their friends and family. Projects can be media based (movie, slideshow, etc.), or something physical they can design, build or create. Throughout the entire process, students will be engaged in research, reading articles, planning through graphic organizer, writing and reflecting which also align with our Common Core standards.
