Snow Alert And Removal Information For The City Of Harrisburg

The Harrisburg Area Food Pantry is a faith based outreach serving Harrisburg and the surrounding area. Generous donations are contributed or collected by several organizations such as the Boys and Girl Scouts, Postal Carriers, local churches, and various organizations and individuals within the school district.

The City of Harrisburg will declare a “Snow Alert” when an accumulation of 2” is either forecast for the city or should the city have no prior forecast warning, when the snow plows are dispatched. This could also include blowing or drifting snow that would require plowing.

Whether you’ve recently been downsized, are otherwise temporarily unemployed, or are experiencing economic challenges, we are here to help. You will need your Driver’s License and documentation showing you are from the Harrisburg area. Any use of available resources will be held in the strictest of confidence.

We are located at 203 Prairie St in Harrisburg. Hours of operation are the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month from 4:00 – 7:00 pm and the 2nd Saturday from 10:00 – noon. For emergencies, we can be reached at (605) 929-0599 or (605) 767-2253.

As our community grows, we will continue to experience increased need for the food pantry. Animal License Renewals Due In January

It shall be the duty of the property owner, tenant, or person in possession of any public or private driveway, parking lot or parking area or boulevard to dispose of accumulated snow upon such property in such manner that any snow when removed shall not be deposited upon any sidewalk or within or upon any public street or alley, after such public street or alley has been cleared of snow by grading of such snow away from the curb or picking up and carrying away of such snow by the City, or in a manner that will obstruct or interfere with the passage or vision of vehicle or pedestrian traffic.

Renewing of animal licenses is required every January. Cost of an animal license is $5.00 for neutered/spayed cat or dog and $10.00 for unneutered/ unsprayed cat or dog. High School Ryan Rollinger Named Assistant Principal Of The Year Mr. Ryan Rollinger has been named Assistant Principal of the Year for South Dakota. He will now compete for national Assistant POY and will travel to Orlando for the award ceremony in February.

“Mr. Rollinger has always been deserving of this award as a principal and is really a co-principal, not an assistant,” related Principal Kevin Lein. “He has saved people’s lives with his steady and honest work for the past 8 years. His heroic acts on September 30th this year just magnified the less public heroism he displays every day.”

Mr. Rollinger is a graduate of Harrisburg High School and the University of Sioux Falls. He is married to Amy and has three children in the district.

As one reference letter stated: “Flatly and frankly, Mr. Rollinger is deserving of any award that designates integrity and confers honor. He is the man so many of our students aspire to be and the educator ALL of our professionals admire and respect. However, he has and would resist ever thinking he is deserving, as his most treasured traits are humility and grace.”

One Act Play: Antigonick MATT HOLMSTROM This January Mr. Smith, Speech teacher at HHS, will be directing a modern adaptation of Antigone, which is called Antigonick.

Mr. Smith gave a quick synopsis of what the play is about. He said,“Antigonick is a modern adaptation of Sophocles’ Antigone, which is the story of Oedipus’s children after his death. His two sons murdered each other in war, and their uncle, who took over as king, has proclaimed that one son will be buried with honor and the other is to be left un-buried. Antigone, Oedipus’ daughter, defies her uncle’s edict and buries her brother, causing the action of the play. At issue is whose laws should be followed – man’s or god’s?” In response to the question, “Why the play Antigone?” Mr. Smith replied, “As a director of educational theatre, I feel it is important to work

with many different genres of theatre; experiencing Greek tragedy is a vital part of our students’ education.” When given the question, “Will this play be a little different from the original playwright by Sophocles?” Mr. Smith replied, “Yes, I’ve cast the whole play with women. This practice was the norm in Shakespeare’s time for only men to play all roles; by flipping this theatrical tradition, I feel this ancient text as adapted by Anne Carson will offer our audience a new way of looking at the world.” I asked Mr. Smith “Who are the main characters, and who portrays them?” and he stated, “Ireland Nichols will perform as Antigone, Kailey Bechtold will perform as Ismene, Kyia Norris will perform as Kreon, and Ambrey Bechtold & Claire Tufty will lead the chorus.” Mr. Smith says that the cast and crew have a combined total of 39 people. Antigonick will be performed on February 2nd in the PAC at HHS and February 4 - 6 at O’Gorman High School’s Lorang Theatre.

From The Counseling Center New Tools To Help Students Make Informed Decisions About Higher Education Cross-posted from the White House blog.

Summary: the Administration is taking steps to arm prospective students and families with better information on college costs and quality.

Completing higher education can provide huge benefits to students that last throughout their lives. Decades of research have shown large returns to higher education in terms of labor market earnings, health, and happiness.

Compared to those with a high school diploma, college graduates earn $1 million more over their lifetimes and have an easier time finding a job. In addition, the jobs of the future are higherskill jobs: over the next decade, the number of jobs requiring some level of higher education is expected to grow more rapidly than those that do not, with more than half of the 30 fastestgrowing occupations requiring postsecondary education.

In order to realize these benefits, prospective students, with the help of advisors ranging from parents and peers to guidance counselors, must make dozens of choices about higher education.

These choices include whether to go to college, which school to attend or major to select, and what level of education or training to pursue.

Despite the importance of these decisions, students, especially those who are low-income or first-generation, often lack clear, easy-to-use, and accessible information.

Research shows that when students have better information, they make better choices about their education. When choosing a college, students need information on college quality to know whether their investment in higher education will pay off. For high-achieving, low-income students, an experiment found that providing information that compares details about college quality, like graduation rates, enabled these students to attend schools that better matched their qualifications. Further research shows that clear and detailed information about earnings can lead students to revise their employment expectations and change their major choice. Accessible information about costs and economic outcomes thus plays a crucial role in encouraging students to make

informed decisions about enrolling in higher education and choosing the best college for their needs.

In addition, students often have mistaken information about the actual costs of attending college, which deters them from applying or enrolling. One study of Boston public school students shows that low-income and firstgeneration prospective students overestimate the cost of college by as much as two or three times the actual amount. The same study finds that students who wanted to go to college and had the relevant qualifications frequently failed to complete financial aid forms or fee waivers.

Students who overestimate costs, including those who do not fully understand the impact of financial aid, are less likely to attend college.

Additionally, evidence shows that providing assistance with filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) encourages students to apply for aid and enroll in college.

In an experiment where tax professionals assisted families in filling out their FAFSA and provided personalized aid estimates, students were significantly more likely to file the FAFSA and enroll in college; the college enrollment impact was even greater for students from low-income families.

That’s why the Administration is taking steps to arm prospective students and families, along with other partners in the higher education community, with better information on college costs and quality. First, the new College Scorecard — available at https://collegescorecard. ed.gov/ — provides the first comprehensive data on costs and student outcomes at nearly all postsecondary institutions in the United States. For the first time, students and their advisors can search for the earnings of students who attended an institution, along with the most up-to-date information about other measures of a college’s quality, including the percentage of students who graduate or repay their loans. Students can also access a new measure of cumulative student debt for borrowers who complete their degree at each institution and an improved measure of students’ success in repaying their loans.

Additionally, the launch of the new College Scorecard data site provides an opportunity to engage researchers in the conversation. To facilitate improvements in the evaluation of college quality going forward, a new Council of Economic Advisers technical paper outlines considerations for using this federal data, methods for assessing the causal effect of institutions on student outcomes, and data driven lessons for performance measurement and accountability.

Taken together, the College Scorecard and data site offer students, researchers, and other stakeholders the most complete set of publicly available data available on the costs and benefits of a particular higher education institution, helping them gauge how college decisions might impact students’ economic futures.

The Administration has also made it easier to apply for financial aid: students can now apply to colleges and for financial aid in tandem.

Beginning in 2016, FAFSA applicants will be able to complete the form on October 1st for the following academic year. The FAFSA will also utilize earlier tax information, enabling more families to use a tool that directly retrieves their tax information and reduces the time needed to fill out the FAFSA from an hour to about 20 minutes. The Harrisburg High School Staff has been greatly spoiled over the past few months with many parents and community businesses providing us with treats and lunches. Gary Sperber from Perfect Practice was one of the generous donors who barbecued burgers and brats for us last month along with several other businesses. We thank him for his time and thoughtfulness.

We would also like to thank the Hatch Family for their generous complimentary lunch provided to us on December 16th. Toppers Pizza (located on Minnesota Avenue) provided a wonderful assortment of pizza and treats. We thank them for a delightful meal!

HHS also shows our appreciation of First National Bank, who provided Pot Belly Sandwiches to our staff last month. Their staff greeted us as we came down for lunch and served a wonderful lunchtime meal!

HOSA Happenings ROSS LANIER – HOSA REPORTER Harrisburg HOSA started the month of December with an exciting tour of SDSU’s Cadaver Lab on December 14th. SDSU is one of two schools in the state who are lucky enough to have a cadaver lab, the other being USD in Vermillion. HOSA members spent a day learning about gross human anatomy in one of South Dakota’s premier academic institutions. Later in the month, Harrisburg HOSA helped support a local Harrisburg family with

medical expenses. Students were able to pay $1 to wear a hat during the school day on Wednesday, December 16th to support the cause. And finally, HOSA helped support the HHS Angel Tree that provides Christmas gifts to families during the holiday season. We look forward to the start of the New Year with our first Science Saturday of 2016 on January 16th! Find information on the school’s website.

FCCLA Donates To The Teddy Bear Den SERINITY STACK, KATE MATHIESEN, AND TIFFANY WALDNER, FCCLA TEDDY BEAR COMMITTEE CHAIRS Harrisburg’s Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) chapter recently completed a community service project that benefited the Teddy Bear Den in Sioux Falls. Students in Harrisburg’s Human Development class initiated the Teddy Bear project after being introduced to the Den’s purpose and program in class. According to TeddyBear.com, the Teddy Bear den is an incentive and education based program for limited income pregnant women within the Sioux Falls community.

Members collected items by collecting supplies in class, as a chapter, and by having a bake sale. Donations from the bake sale were used to buy additional items for the agency. On Wednesday, December 9th, FCCLA members dropped the items off. Members were able to learn more about the agency by visiting with Teddy Bear’s executive director, Sandy Lown.

Harrisburg High School Wins 100,00 Through State Farms 2N2 Campaign MYCKENZIE KUCHAR AND MRS. TRACY KERN As the Holiday Season is upon us, Harrisburg High School is celebrating it’s win and thanking community members and students for helping the school win $100,000 with the State Farm 2N2 Campaign.

Harrisburg’s FCCLA Chapter and Visual Arts Department led the safe driving campaign titled, “2N2”. State Farm’s Celebrate My Drive asks all drivers to think 2n2: 2 eyes on the road and 2 eyes on the wheel. To get the word out about the campaign, students created a video showcasing the importance of safe driving. Community members had the chance to vote over Harrisburg’s video. Of the 50 videos selected for voting, Harrisburg was one of the eleven schools with the highest votes. With this win, school will receive a $100,000 towards programs and projects in the community.

22% of the money will go towards safe driving education and the other 78% will be spread across the community through a grant based program and student scholarships.

Harrisburg FFA Members Excel At State Leadership CDE’s!

TODD MARKS & TARA FASTERT, FFA ADVISORS The Harrisburg FFA Chapter had a very successful trip to Pierre on December 6th & 7th to compete in the State Leadership CDE’s. Eighteen members of the Harrisburg Chapter qualified for the State event by placing in the top 3 at the District 7 qualifying event. Harrisburg members competed in seven of the eleven CDE events and represented HHS very well.

Leading the way for Harrisburg was freshman Kayla Smeenk who participated in and was named State Champion in the Creed Speaking CDE! Kayla won over 21 contestants in this event and is the first state creed champion from Harrisburg since 1990. Kayla will now represent South Dakota at the National CDE Event in Indianapolis, IN in October of 2016.

Harrisburg’s Senior Parliamentary Procedure team also did very well by placing 2nd to claim state runner-up honors. Competition was very close. A perfect score in parliamentary procedure is 1000 points and Harrisburg was second with a score of 962 to first place Highmore’s score of 967. Harrisburg was honored to have three members named to the All-State Parliamentary Procedure team. Grace Aasshiem; President, Sydney Wood; Secretary, and Alexander Auch; Student Advisor all received All State honors. The remaining team members were Nicole Hudson; Vice President, Ashlynne Beninga; Reporter, Connor McAllister; Treasurer, and Noah Hovorka; Sentinel.

Harrisburg had not competed in the Agricultural Communications CDE for many years. Three freshman members decided to try this event and not only qualified for state, they brought home fifth place honors. Isabella Saunders, Kenzie Nord, and Allyson Beninga were the members of this team. The team and advisors would like to thank Mrs. Marissa Edwards for coaching motivating these girls.

Harrisburg was also well represented in the Prepared Public Speaking event. Senior Nathan Harmer placed 8th with his speech about the use of drones in agriculture. Junior Ashlynne Beninga placed 7th with her speech about the Veterinary Feed Directive. Also competing at state for Harrisburg were Ben Ostebee in Extemporaneous Public Speaking, Connor McAllister in Agricultural Broadcasting, and the Agricultural Issues team of Rowdy Hillmer, MaKenzie Voss, Abigail Bushar, Myckenzie Kuchar, and Jade Hewer.

SFO: Overall first place team Braden Culp & Kenadee Taylor HHS Debaters Take on the World at Apple Valley The HHS debate team kicked off the regular season with a trip to the Minneapple debate contest in Apple Valley, MN on November 6-7. The last four national champion schools in public forum debate also attended the tournament. The Tigers had their hands full but were able to come away with their own marble apple awards. The team was led by the efforts of novice debaters Landon Zavesky and Cole Titze who ran the table with a 9-0 record and first place in the novice public forum division.

Their efforts combined with that of the rest of the team earned Harrisburg 2nd place team sweepstakes in the public forum division!

HHS Debate Soars at the Golden Eagle The HHS debate team brought home two first place trophies from the Golden Eagle Cup at Aberdeen Central HS. Seniors Manaal Ali and Jordann Krouse defeated Mitchell HS in the final

round to win the varsity public forum division.

Shelby Specht and Liz Ocegueda also went undefeated in the novice public forum division to complete the sweep for the Tigers.

HHS Debate continues strong season at Mitchell McGovern The HHS Debaters continued their strong season with the team’s youth leading the way at the Mitchell HS McGovern Invitational. Sophomores Claire Tufty and Ben Menke placed first on the junior varsity public forum division with an undefeated record. Teammates Allyson Kowalski and Evan Papka placed third on the JV PF division as well. Freshmen Carter Lucas and Kendall Larson were undefeated but placed second due to speaker points. Liz Ocegueda and Shelby Specht placed third in the competition with a 4-1 record. The team completed the day with a 33-17 record.

HHS Debate Attends the Dowling Catholic Paradigm

The HHS debate team traveled to Des Moines, IA to compete in the Dowling Catholic Paradigm speech and debate tournament. The team was led by seniors Jordann Krouse and Lucas Davis who made it to the octofinal round – the round of sixteen – which earned them a bid for the Tournament of Champions national championship at the University of Kentucky. Sophomores Ben Menke and Evan Papka also broke to elimination rounds from the field of 90 teams to be double-octofinalists.

Freshmen Liz Ocegueda and Julia Hopes had an outstanding contest and qualified for the novice breakout final round, but lost a 2-1 decision to finish as runner-ups.

Liberty Elementary Mayor Visit MOLLY MCCOLLISTER, JENA STORM, AMANDA DIETZ The 4th graders at Liberty were fortunate to have two very special guests in October. Harrisburg’s Mayor, Julie Burke-Bowen explained the role that a mayor plays in local government. In addition to the specifics about her job, the kids were eager to hear details about the future projects in store for our town. Some things that were mentioned were local businesses and recreational opportunities in the area.

Our second guest, Mayor Mike Huether of Sioux Falls, supported many of the details that Mayor Burke-Bowen presented. He stressed the importance of communication between the government and the people in a growing city. He taught the students how to properly greet one another with a confident handshake, which sets a good first impression. By meeting Mayor Julie and Mayor Mike, the students were able to relate what they’ve learned about government in their classrooms to experiences in the community.

North Middle School 8th Grade Team News The New Year has arrived and the 8th grade team is excited to share what students can expect to experience and learn during second semester in some of their core classes.

History: Second semester will focus on the establishment and growth of our new nation, the Constitution, the War of 1812, the development of democracy, the West, slavery, and end the year with the Civil War. Upon completion of the class, students should be able to analyze significant developments in early US history that pertain to Native Americans, minorities, women, and also our Founding Fathers.

ELA: In ELA we will finish up Springboard Unit 2 on argumentation with a debate unit where students can showcase their arguing skills along with supporting evidence. After that, Unit 3 focuses on the challenge to make a difference where we will study the Holocaust and read the novel Night. We will also read the novel Tears of a Tiger to conclude that unit. For Unit 4, we get to study the challenge of comedy and will hopefully end with reading Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Math: Students will be introduced to and explore Functions upon their return from break, which prepares them for the next skill about Linear Functions. Students will then build on their knowledge of Geometry, with some of the concepts including the Pythagorean Theorem, Surface Area and Volume. We will conclude the semester working with the wonderful world of Statistics.

Science: We will be studying everything! At the end of the year we will be looking at space and the universe. Before that though, we will finish our studying of the planet Earth as we shift from the geosphere to the hydrosphere. We will be studying all the Earth’s water in all forms. After that we will move to studying weather and climate. Which will take us to 4th quarter when we move into space as mentioned above.

Our student group will also travel to Arlington National Cemetery which is one of the oldest cemeteries established during the Civil War. We will visit the Kennedy Gravesites as well as the Challenger Memorials. Four students from North Middle School will also be chosen to participate in the wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

Friday, January 20 will be the highlight of our trip. We will start off the morning witnessing the inauguration on Capitol Hill by listening to the Oath of Office and the President’s first address to the nation. Later that afternoon, we will watch the inaugural parade and participate in the celebrations welcoming in the newest President. In the evening, Mrs. Huffman has planned a boat cruise on the Potomac. Students will enjoy an inaugural dinner and dance while cruising along the river. They will also have the opportunity to meet other students from all over the country.

To begin the month, advisory classes were challenged to collect donations for Children’s Miracle Network. A goal was set to raise $1500. Middle school students stepped up to the challenge and blew this goal out of the water by collecting over $4,800! The money was divided in half with half going directly to CMN while the other half was used to purchase stuffed animals, books and toys for children who are currently in the Sanford Children’s Hospital this holiday season.

Also during this month, a canned food drive challenge was held and over 1000 pounds of canned food items were collected!

On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the student councils from both the North and South middle school partnered together to continue this

generous sense of giving. The canned food items were donated to the local food pantries of Harrisburg and Sioux Falls. Students then purchased 200 stuffed animals and books from Kohl’s, then traveled to Build a Bear and each made their very own stuffed animal. These animals were carefully selected for a sick child and filled with a wish for them this holiday season.

A total of 52 bears were purchased at Build a Bear as well!

The highlight of this trip for many was being able to hand deliver these items to families at the Sanford Children’s Hospital. Seeing the light in their eyes as a teddy bear, book or toy was handed to them brought tears to many students’ eyes. We were privileged to give one of our own Harrisburg families a gift for their child as well.

South Middle School Genius Hour: A 7th Grade Learning Experience THE 7TH GRADE TEAM The 7th grade students at South Middle School were introduced to Genius Hour on Wednesday, December 2. The one hundred sixteen students gathered in the commons area with their teachers and administrators to kick off this learning experience. The students viewed a couple of inspirational videos including one about a group of young boys creating their own soccer team, and another about being the individual who challenges what they know so they can learn more about the world and themselves. Genius Hour is a concept which encourages students to find their passion, and to take the time to research their passion.

While in the commons, the students worked together to brainstorm different topics they were interested in learning about during the Genius Hour time.

The students were encouraged to make a connection between a chosen topic and making the world a better place. There were seven categories the students sorted their ideas into. They included technology, science/ health, art/music/literature, construction/design, school improvement, community service, and other. The students wrote ideas on sticky notes and stuck them all over the walls. Once the students finished brainstorming ideas, advisories walked around together in a gallery-walk style activity to view the different ideas and discuss what had been brainstormed.

The 7th graders will be given one hour each week to research a passion of their choice. They will use this time to plan, research, make contacts outside of the school, and develop an end product or display they will share with the school. The students have the option to work with a partner on this learning opportunity, or they may choose to work individually. It is important for students to take ownership in their learning. Genius Hour provides students with this chance to go above and beyond their regular classroom expectations and challenge themselves to discover what is important to them.

Final displays will be shared with the students and staff at South Middle School on Thursday, March 24.

Each student o r pair of students will display the learning outcomes for the research completed. This time will allow others to come view and ask questions about the displays so they can learn more as well.

Explorer Elementary Harrisburg Explorer Elementary Participates In Girls On The Run

ASHLEY KEUPP, EXPLORER ELEMENTARY TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATIONIST This fall, 19 third through fifth graders participated in EMBE’s Girls on the Run program held at Explorer Elementary. Girls on the Run is a national nonprofit organization that uses a researched curriculum to teach life lessons, enhance self-esteem, and build confidence in young girls.

Baseball and Softball REGISTRATION

The Girls on the Run program ran for 10 weeks, and the girls met with their coaches twice per week and talked about ways to build confidence and how to deal with issues that young girls face. Each session concluded with a running activity. They also completed a community service project, which they designed themselves. For their project, the girls decided to make cards to send to ill children who are staying at the hospitals around Sioux Falls.

The girls wrapped up the season with a 5K fun-run including ALL of the girls who participated in the Girls on the Run program across the Sioux Empire. It was a fun day and they really enjoyed the unseasonably warm fall weather for their run.

Endeavor Elementary Endeavor 1st Graders Host Pumpkins With Papa THERESA BASS On October 23rd the first graders at Endeavor Elementary hosted Pumpkins with Papa. During this time the student’s dad, uncle, grandpa or special male role model came to school to help their first grader carve out a pumpkin. There was then a pumpkin parade for all the school to come and see our pumpkin creations.

Journey Elementary 21st Century Library Award HIGHSTREET, JOURNEY ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL Congratulations to Kristi Jones, SMS, Amy DeNomme, Explorer Elementary, and Beth Wells, Journey Elementary. These Harrisburg Schools librarians and their libraries have been awarded 21st Century Library Awards from the South Dakota State Library. All three libraries received the award at the exemplary, or highest, level. This award, open to certified library media specialists, recognizes schools with libraries that meet the characteristics of a 21st Century school library through their program (services), place (the library facilities), and professional (the certified librarian and the way she fulfills her responsibilities). Ms. Jones received the award in 2014. Mrs. DeNomme and Mrs. Wells received the award in 2015. All awards run for a three-year term. We here at Harrisburg are pleased to recognize these librarians as representatives for all our outstanding libraries.

3rd Grade Learn Through Cultural Potluck Day CORRINA FEELDY, JOURNEY 3RD GRADE TEACHER The third graders at Journey Elementary recently learned about different cultures and traditions from around the world. As an extension to their learning they completed three parts to a project. First, they had to write about and share a family tradition of their own, second they located their ancestral countries on a map and shared a little but about their own ancestors, and finally brought in a family recipe. All three things were then brought together at a Cultural Potluck Day. Parents and students enjoyed food and traditions from all their classmates’ cultures! This was certainly a fun and memorable event for all involved!
