Beginning January 1st, 2015 the following ordinance will be strictly enforced and payment arrangements on utility bills will no longer be honored.

All utility water/sewer bills are due on the twentieth (20th) day of the month. If bills are not paid by the due date, a twenty (20) percent penalty shall be assessed the following day. If a bill for utility services is not paid in full the customer shall be given notice by mail or by personal service by posting on the property that service shall be terminated within five (5) working days of the date of posting. Failure to pay all charges and penalties will result in disconnection of services. All utilities disconnected for nonpayment must pay a reconnect fee plus payment in full of the amount owed on the account before any utilities will be reconnected.

Reconnections will be made only during business hours, 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.

Harrisburg Community Fire Department To Host Annual Poultry Party

Harrisburg Community Library is continuing its effort to best serve the local community, so please come down to 200 E Willow Street and check out our vast selection of books, DVDs, audio books, E-Readers, and Blu-Ray Discs. Please visit our FaceBook page and “Like Us” to stay up to date with library happenings, we are always adding new material and we have just started offering educational classes to the community. Thanks to everyone who was involved in the summer reading program “Super Heroes.” We had 177 children involved and it was a great success, so thank-you to those who participated.

Community Education: We are planning to have a canvas painting for kids activity at the Library on November 14th at 10am. The painting will be done by After 5 Art Party and the cost will be $20. Come on down and have your children make a holiday gift idea for someone special.

Story Time with Santa will be Friday December 4th at 6:30pm – 8:00 pm.

City Animal Ordinances License Application Any person desiring to keep, maintain, or have in his custody or control within the municipal limits of the City any cat or dog shall, within seven days of acquiring such pet and thereafter every year, submit to the City Finance Office a Pet License Application. A valid rabies certificate shall accompany each application, stating the name of the veterinarian who administered the inoculation, the date it was given, and the length of time during which such inoculation will be effective, which shall be at least as long as the license period.

License Fee - Each Pet License Application shall be submitted with a license fee according to the following schedule: Neutered/spayed car or dog: $5.00 Unneutered/unspayed cat or dog: $10.00 COLLAR REQUIRED It shall be the duty of the owner of each licensed pet to place a collar around the neck of the pet to display the animal license issued to that animal.

ANIMALS AT LARGE It shall be deemed a violation for any person who owns or who has under his care any animal to allow said animal to run at large. Any animal shall either be on a leash or tether controlled by a person, or properly secured to a leash which has been tied to an immovable object, or confined within an enclosure sufficient to keep said animal restrained from escaping such enclosure. No animal shall be leashed to an immovable object so as to permit the animal to walk on or over any public sidewalk or street, or any property of another person other than that of the owner of said animal. Any person that controls or restrains any animal by hand, leash or tether shall be physically capable of effecting positive physical control and restraint of the animal at all times. Any animal not confined by leash, tether, or enclosure as set forth herein, is hereby declared to be running at large and is hereby declared to be a public nuisance.

The fine for an animal running at large is $100.00. The owner of the animal found in violation may, within eleven business days of the time when the notice of violation was given, pay to the office of the Finance Officer, as fine for and in full satisfaction of the violation, the sum of $100.00, thereafter the fine shall be increased to $150.00. Upon failure of the owner to pay either of the sums to the office of the Finance Officer within twenty-two business days from the notice of violation, the fine shall be increased to $215.00 plus

court costs, which fine may be collected by the Magistrate Court. The owner also has the right to contest the charges or plead «not guilty» within the time periods indicated above, and have the matter transferred to Magistrate Court. If the animal has been declared a dangerous or vicious animal, the fine amount shall be doubled.

DISTURBING THE PEACE It shall be deemed a violation for any person owning or possessing any animal to suffer or permit such animal to disturb the peace and quiet of the neighborhood by barking, howling, crowing, crying, or making other loud or unusual noises. It shall be the duty of any person in possession of any such animal which disturbs the peace and quiet to dispose of the disturbance even if disposing of the animal is the only effective means. If the event that an animal is making any noise to disturb the peace and quiet of a neighborhood and the person owning or having the care or custody or control over the animal cannot be found to remedy the disturbance or, if found, refuses or fails to remedy the disturbance, then the animal may be impounded.

How you can help: We are always in need of donated food, cleaning and household supplies. With winter coming, we can use clean, gently used coats and new socks, gloves and hats. A ‘most needed’ list is included on our Facebook page. Monetary donations are always welcome, of course.

Plus, if you’re available to volunteer in any capacity, please do! There are a myriad of opportunities available ranging from an hour to several and can be on a one time basis or ongoing.

A huge THANK YOU to the Boy Scouts, HyVee (57 and Cliff), volunteers, and the Harrisburg Area community for a successful food drive on Saturday, October 24th. It takes a lot of planning, footwork and time on the part of the Boy Scouts to pull this together. The job they did was incredible! th

Over 2,000 pounds of food, household/cleaning supplies, personal care items, eyeglasses, winter coats, gloves, socks and winter scarves were donated. It was particularly exciting to see how many critically needed items were received!

Besides dropping off empty bags at individual homes and picking them back up after they were filled, the Boy Scouts weighed and helped sort donations while also keeping everyone warm with homemade monkey bread and hot cocoa. Many wonderful volunteers assisted with the sorting and subsequent shelving of the products.

It was heart-warming to see everyone working together, introducing themselves to those they’d never met, and helping others lift, twist and turn the carts into position to be emptied. It was the perfect example of Neighbors Helping Neighbors.

We truly appreciate everyone who participated in the annual Boy Scout Food Drive whether you donated items, brought them to the food pantry, picked up and returned carts from HyVee, or assisted after the items were delivered to the site. You are all AMAZING!! Thank you.

Harrisburg Youth Wrestling Sign-Up Info

Practices for Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st or 2nd Graders without previous experience will begin the first week of December and will practice one time per week. Experienced wrestlers in 1st Grade or older will begin practice around November 10th and will practice two times per week.

Practices will be held in the South Middle School and High School Wrestling rooms depending on the age and weight of the wrestler.

The coaching staff consists of long-time program coordinator Rollie Fink, along with several current and former Augustana Wrestlers. Anyone interested in volunteering to help with the program should contact a member of the board by emailing us at: harrisburgyouthwrestling@gmail. com.

The cost of the program again this year is $80 per wrestler if you register prior to November 15th, but will increase to $120 thereafter. Included with every club membership is top-notch coaching of up to two practices per week, tournament entry fees, and a paid AAU membership.

Harrisburg School Distict To Offer Community Education The Harrisburg School District will be jumping into the foray to offer community education programs. The School District has begun discussions with the Harrisburg Community Library committee to complement each other’s programming and offer a wide variety of options to local residents.

The district will focus on utilizing the new classrooms at the Leap High Academic Center to the west of the current high school for potential courses on cooking, novels, genealogy, computers, photography, embroidery, quilting, baking, restoring furniture, bicycle safety, babysitting smarts, gardening, and potentially many others. Other locations may be utilized as well to allow health and exercise classes as well.

The groups hope to begin courses in January and are open to new ideas.

There will be more information in the near future, including a proposal form if you are interested in offering a community education course. If you are looking to learn more information now please contact Dr. Kip McKee at Harrisburg High School.

Tigers High School Fast Pitch Softball Teams Finish A Successful 2015 Season

Winter Cheer Camp, Saturday, December 19, Harrisburg high school, with cheer performance before varsity boys basketball game. Saturday, December 19th’s game will be a community theme night - Harrisburg Hawaiian Night - dress accordingly!

Be sure to check out the first draft update of the current trophy cases near the concession stand. As the progress continues on our future trophy cases, mural and student benches to line the hallway to the locker rooms, Tiger Nation is asking for your help. Any donated item, jersey, pom poms, sneakers, pins, etc worn by a Tiger that you are willing to donate, we will display it! The current trophy cases highlight athletic successes from the year 2000 going forward, hundreds of fine arts and other athletic honors are still hidden away in storage and we are eager to get those displayed.

Any item or cash donation towards this project can be mailed to Tiger Nation, P.O. Box 479, Harrisburg, SD 57032 or dropped off at the high school office. With any donation, be sure to include the alumni name, graduation year and a phone number.

Aanna Okerlund and Jalena Smallfield lead the way on the hill with 5 wins each, and Lexi Kono picked up 1 win and 2 saves. Holly Jones led the team in batting average at .491, stolen bases with 19, and runs scored with 20. Steph Gabel, and Audra Nickel led the way in Runs Batted In (RBI) with 16 each. Both Gabel, Nickel, and Jr. Miranda “Murph” Hall homered during the season. Gabel led the way in OBP, and slugging as well posting an outstanding 1.380 OPS. The Tigers JV team finished the season with a 12-6 record, and a 4th place finish at the State Tournament, making a nice run on the second day beating Watertown, and Sturgis before falling 9-8 to Dell Rapids. The JV team also took second in the ESD tournament earlier in the year falling 5-4 in the championship game to Watertown. The Tigers offense was lead by Fr. Halleigh Kokenge (.659 batting avg.), So. Hallie Sagness (.545), and Fr. Magenta Hammond (.538). A trio of Tigers led the team in RBI’s: Kokenge (18), So. Shelby Brodkorb (17), and Jr. Hannah Marlow (15). On the hill Jr. Kylie Berndt led the way with 7 wins, and 8th grader Jenna Brodkorb picked up 5.

Overall it was a very successful season for this growing program, as the Tigers set a record for wins at the varsity level, and had the largest number of players participating in the program at 25. The future is bright with 21 of those players coming back next season! Thanks to all who came out to support these hardworking young ladies this Fall!

KEN LANIER The Tigers Varsity softball team finished the 2015 season with a best ever record of 11-7. The Tigers made a run at a State Championship, finishing in 3rd place. The Tigers defeated Dakota Valley, and Madison, but then fell to eventual champion Douglas and runner up Lennox the final two games of the tournament. The Tigers had 3 first team All State players this season in Sr. Aanna Okerlund, Jr. Steph Gabel, and So. Holly Jones. Jr. Lexi Kono was selected 2nd Team All State. Harrisburg players also garnered 3 of 6 Player of the Week honors during the season with Gabel, Jones, and Jr. Callie Cook all being selected. ESD All-Tourney honors were awarded to Okerlund, Cook, Jones and So. Audra Nickel.

High School Harrisburg FCCLA Wants You To Meet Lacto And Strepto BROOKLYNN GROSS Brooklynn Gross from Harrisburg FCCLA presented a dental health puppet show to children at the South Dakota State Fair, the Family Health and Safety Festival, and the Sioux Falls United Way Reading Festival.

Her puppets, two germs named Lacto and Strepto, taught the children about the importance of brushing and flossing. She will be using the puppet show as a Focus on Children STAR event for FCCLA. Leadership Class Does Service LEADERSHIP CLASS On October 14th, the members of the Leadership and Service Class did their quarterly community service day. They spent three hours in the morning sorting and boxing books for the Museum of Visual Materials in Sioux Falls. They are preparing to catalogue their very large collection and we helped by packing around 20 boxes and further sorting some books by category. Students worked hard and were impressed by both the variety of books and the age of many of them.

In the afternoon, the students each cut and tied a fleece blanket to be given to the Children’s Inn for distribution to their clientele. A fulfilling and fun day was had by all, and we look forward to our second quarter’s service day.

Harrisburg FCCLA Members Enhance Leadership Skills At Leadership Weekend Harrisburg High School Celebrates Their In Huron MRS. TRACY KERN 2000th Blood Ten students from Donation Harrisburg High School FCCLA joined over 300 FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) fellow students from across the state in Huron on October 4-5 for the 2015 South Dakota FCCLA Fall Leadership Conference.

This year’s state theme is Empower Mepower. This theme challenges students to make the right choices, and commit themselves to making a positive impact within the family, school, FCCLA, and community. The power to achieve this impact lies within us.

Members attended three different trainings: Rookie Training, Power Training, and State Leadership Team Training. At Rookie Training, attendees were educated about the organization and its opportunities by two college alumni. In Power Training, national officers Josh Sorbe and Allyson Monson helped members built upon previously acquired leadership skills by doing various chapter activities. At State Leadership Team Training, the elected South Dakota peer educators planned their year’s program of work.

FCCLA is the only youth-led organization with family as its central focus.

Members learn how to be active community leaders, become caring family members, and prepare for life beyond high school.

Harrisburg Students Attend The ITeachU Academy At SDSU Nicole Pierson On October 14, 2015, six Harrisburg Career and Technical Education students and their advisers, attended the iTeachU Academy in Brookings, SD. Those students who attended the academy included: Regan Yseth, Mariah Stensgaard, Mackenzie Kucher, Christy Wipf, Nicole Pierson, and Jerica Warwick and their advisers, Mrs. Tracy Kern and Mr. Todd Marks. iTeachU is an academy that explains the possibilities of teaching in the following areas: Family and Consumer Science Education, Agricultural Education, and/or the general education fields. The day comprised of spending time discussing qualities of teachers, how to interact with students, and leadership skills.

TODD MARKS, FFA ADVISOR Harrisburg, SD- Harrisburg High School and Community Blood Bank celebrated the 2000th donation of blood from the Harrisburg community on Monday, October 19 during the bloodmobile’s 48th appearance at HHS. The lucky donor was HHS senior, Brooklyn Baatz. The Harrisburg FFA sponsored the first blood drive at HHS on May 20, 1992 and Alicia Landegent was the student chairperson of this event. 45 units of Blood were drawn that day starting a strong tradition of community service and support for the Blood Mobile here in Harrisburg.

The Harrisburg High School students, faculty, friends, family and community now have donated over 250 gallons of blood impacting multiple patients’ lives at Sanford Medical Center, Avera McKennan Hospital, V.A. Medical Center, Avera Heart Hospital, Sanford Heart Hospital, Sanford Children’s and Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital. The high school sponsors two blood drives a year in partnership with the Community Blood Bank.

“Community support is vital to the local blood supply. It is important to know that the blood that is donated to Community Blood Bank is from your friends and neighbors in this region,” states Ken Versteeg, Executive Director, Community Blood Bank. “We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with Harrisburg High School for over 23 years. We celebrate with Harrisburg High School for their 2000th donation of life saving blood.

Because of dedicated donors donating blood at Harrisburg High School blood is readily available for traumas, surgeries and the treatment of cancer.”

Community Blood Bank is not affiliated with other blood bank organizations and takes pride in being a self-sufficient organization, thanks to the generosity of our local blood donors.

HOSA Happenings ROSS LANIER – HOSA REPORTER HOSA officers kicked off a busy month at the state fall leadership academy on October 4th and 5th. Harrisburg HOSA officers joined other officers across the state, including from the new Custer and Lake Area Tech chapters, in Rapid City for a two-day academy filled with leadership workshops and news about HOSA opportunities across the state. Other activities included an in-depth tour of Regional Health Hospital’s leading facilities, leadership breakout sessions, and a riveting workshop at Crazy Horse Memorial on Native American culture relating to different styles of leadership. Back in Harrisburg, our members provided baked goods for parent-teacher conferences with a suggested option for a small donation. This fundraiser was a major success generating over two hundred dollars, so look again for our bake sale at conferences in the spring. Another upcoming event is the October Science Saturday, on Halloween! Students are planning their spookiest science demonstrations, and those who will be attending are encouraged to come in costume. Volleyball Players Recognize HHS Teachers And Community Members MARAYA KING On Thursday, October 15th, the four seniors on the Harrisburg volleyball team were given the opportunity to honor a teacher who has made an impact in their lives. Sydney Fikse chose to surprise Kaye Weber by honoring her as an encouraging academic advisor and volleyball coach.

Lisa Foreman was recognized by Brittan Murphy for being an exceptional Spanish teacher, as well as a fellow Lewis Drug Store enthusiast. Maraya King chose to honor Scott Langerock, her wellness teacher and personal motivational speaker. Shelly Mathiesen was recognized by Karli O’Connor for being an influential teacher since elementary school. Staff members from the entire school district were invited to attend the game and cheer on their students, both past and present. To wrap up their regular season play, the HHS volleyball team held their annual “Senior Night” on Tuesday, October 20th, when they hosted and went on to beat the Brandon Valley Lynx in a heated five set match. With the close of regular season play, the Tigers set their sights on continued competition in the post-season.

Getting To Know Guillermo JORDAN EGAN Guillermo del Río Fernández-Labandera is a sixteen year old foreign exchange student from Spain spending a year here at Harrisburg High School. I sat down with him to learn about his experience here in Harrisburg and about the differences in culture between here and his home.

First off, why did you apply to be a youth exchange student?

G: My mother convinced me to come and learn English. Also, for a different experience and way of life in United States.

How is it different living here?

G: In Spain, I went to bed very late and here I go to sleep at nine. Here I have two big dogs and live in a house with a garden here and I live in an apartment in Spain. Fast food is not as popular in Spain so I would eat a lot healthier. Spanish schools do not give you pizza or hamburgers for lunch which is also a difference. I have to speak English 24 hours a day which is challenging but good.

What are the biggest challenges your country is facing right now?

G: In Spain they are having trouble with one of our provinces who wants independence. These people want to break away from us but they are still like us. I’m proud for myself, and I love my culture. Also in Spain close to 25% of population is without a job. People who can work, cannot get jobs. Now we are hosting immigrants from Syria. Many people coming from Asia. The economic crisis is a big issue.

How do you feel about Harrisburg High School?

G: Good, people have been very nice to me. Lots of crops and cows. No trouble with nobody, it’s been very positive.

How does it compare with your school in Spain?

G: The times we go to school are the same. We do not change classes, you stay in the same class all day. The teachers are the ones who change classes. We also do not mix grades. If you are a junior, you are always with juniors. School is close to my apartment so I can walk to school. You have until tenth grade, so tenth grade year was my last year which is sad because everyone is going to different schools. We have six classes a day but not the same everyday. We cannot choose our subjects, that is ran by government. Your tenth year you choose one of three different groups of subjects you want to study in college and I chose biology, physics, and chemistry because I want to be an oceanographer.

HHS Marching Band Closes Out Another Successful Season JASON GROON A season that started with rehearsals in the grueling July heat, came to a close in the brisk temperatures of late October. The Harrisburg High School Marching Band finished up their second season of competitive marching on Oct. 17th at the Quad State Marching Festival held in the Dakota Dome on the USD campus in Vermillion, SD. Along with performing at the Quad State Marching Competition, the Harrisburg Marching Band also competed this season at the Pursuit of Excellence in Marshall, MN, the Big Sioux Review in Brandon, SD, the Festival of Bands in Sioux Falls, SD, and the Dutchmen Field Championship in Orange City, IA, as well as performing at half-time of all the home football games.

By all measures the 2015 marching season was a success. And now, as winter approaches, we eagerly await the return of July temperatures and the start of the 2016 marching season.

Counseling Center SUE KOOIMA It’s been a busy start to the year so far! Here are some things that have been going on: Challenge Day: The United Way was so very kind to pay for two full days of Challenge day for the High School. Over a 150 students and staff participated in a full day filled with games, music, large and small group discussions and much more. It was definitely a great experience for all involved. You can find more information on Challenge Day at http://www. challengeday.org Graduation Orders: The Senior class had a meeting with the Josten’s Representative and has placed their Cap and Gown orders.

Testing: The PSAT and ASVAB tests were given to those who signed up to take them. The ASVAB test is for those interested in enlisting into the Military.

The PSAT test is connected to the National Merit Scholarship.

Fall Planning Days: On Sept. 30, the Junior class was taken to Augustana University where they had the opportunity to check out over 100 colleges and universities.

Junior and Senior class meetings: Information was given to them regarding Post-Secondary options and the timeline of how to apply, scholarship information and testing.

North Middle School Everyday Schedule For A Seventh-Grade NMS Tiger Tracks Clubs BRIANNA DEMARAIS Student And Lunch SHANE BRANDHAGEN AND CARTER TUNTLAND The classes in Harrisburg North Middle School (7th Grade) are advisory, encore, science, math, gym/music, geography, English, and directed studies. Advisory is the announcements and projects. Encore can be Art, Tech Ed, Health, FACS, and Current Events. Science is life science, things that happen in the world. Math is a very difficult class. You need to work hard in math. Gym is games and fitness, and music is musicians and projects. No singing involved. Geography replaces social studies, and it’s about learning the world. English is all about writing and English skills.

Directed studies are a time about doing homework, or going to band or chorus (for people who signed up).

Today lunch is the best lunch all year. The Tiger bowl contains potatoes chicken corn cheese and gravy. Usually we have a pretty good lunch because of all the choices. It is also a good lunch system because you can check what the lunch is on the website. With the website you can see if you like lunch or want to bring home lunch. The lunch choices that you have every day are pizza, subs, or two hot dishes. After everyone has got through the lunch line there is something called ale cart, a lot of the kids like to eat these items because it is like desert or sweeter items. There are three lunch times: A, B, or C.

Encore Class HANNAH DO At HNMS and HSMS, students receive as part of their day a chance to explore a variety of topics through Encore classes. Below you will find a brief update of what students are doing in class.

In health class, students are taking their blood pressure screenings, wrist cut screenings, and oxygen level screenings. In art, students just finished texture matching using various types of materials, and in current events class, students are continuing to discuss current events through daily logs.

In FACS (family and consumer science, students are baking apple pies.

Currently in Spanish, students are doing a project on going to a restaurant and practicing everyday conversation. Lastly, in technology education students are continuing to explore careers opportunities through modules including STEM.

Performing Arts Update KOREY MUTH North Middle School’s performing arts center is growing every year. Mrs. Olson, now Mrs. Fikse, has been making the Harrisburg Middle School performing arts program bigger and better. It first started as a club, but then formed into a school event. The first year it was open the play was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and we did a high school and middle school musical which was Oliver. The second year was Little Shop of Horrors and a dinner theatre called Louder than Words. The third year so far we are going to make a Back to the 80’s Musical. It is about a boy and his friends who are in high school who just want to fit in. The jocks do not like them who the kids want to be with, but the nerds accept them who they don’t want to be with.

We are so lucky to have Mrs. Fikse to lead us into the best theatre program in South Dakota. I conclude that Harrisburg North Middle School’s performing arts center is getting better and better.

NMS offers many clubs for students to get involved in. They include: Running, Craft, Cooking, Babysitting, Weightlifting, Ping Pong, Blogging,Yard Games, Dodge Ball, Video Games, Empower You, Open Gym, Greek Mythology, Fitness, Computer Coding, Investment, and Knitting.

These are all the clubs you can choose at HNMS that are offered every semester for students.

Students should choose the one they are interested in, or you can also choose one that you don’t know how to do, and you want to learn how to do it. It might be fun.

Just give it a try; also, you can also do more than one club.

BYOD HANNAH HEALY BYOD stands for Bring Your Own Device. It is a program offered to seventh and eighth grade students allowing them bring a laptop or a tablet that can be used in school. For those who cannot bring a device, the school provides a school computer. The students are not allowed to take them home making it harder to do homework, but also make it easier. The school has restrictions for use such as no social media, certain websites etc. Overall in a poll of a seventh-grade classroom a unanimous 98% said they were glad to have devices to use in seventh grade.

Book Fair CORBIN SOK The book fair was amazing! The book fair had many books, and many cool trinkets. There was a spy pen, bracelets, fake flowers, and even posters!

There were three tables of books set-up, and the wall was covered with books, too! They had almost every book you could want, including the new ones that had just come out. If you cannot keep a hold of your bookmarks, don't worry, the book fair had plenty. If only the book fair did not end.

NMS Jazz Band MATTHEW VERMULM Jazz band at North Middle School has already started. The jazz band needs a bass guitarist and an electric guitarist. If you are interested please contact Mr. Shervey, and if you need to rent an instrument that is available as well.

If you wish to enter band please go to the office. Jazz band will start at the beginning of the day and end before the school day starts.

After School Sports And Extracurricular Activities BRIANNA SANDVIG Everyday after school there are after-school sports until the season is over for that particular sport. Students in eighth and seventh grade can participate in the sports after school. There is also extracurricular activities students for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade can participate in, which includes band, choir, theater, show choir, and jazz band.

I believe we have after school sports to build teams and make new hobbies and to learn new skills. Mr. Hartzler said, “It’s important to have after school sports because it builds and encourages teamwork.” We have extracurricular because get to learn new things that can later help us later in life with the skills.

All students have student led conferences this year, which means all students have a script they have been putting together in the advisory for your student to read to you at their conference. Each student has a preferred conference time. Conferences were two weeks ago on Thursday!

At HNMS we have student led conferences because it helps the students with their speaking skills and confidence, and communication skills.

Uncovering The Mystery Of The Salem Witch Trials ALYSSA PERSSON For two weeks in October, HSMS 8th graders learned about the Salem Witch Trials. Students learned to differentiate between what was fact, myth, and what is still a mystery today. They learned about the motivations people had to accuse their fellow citizens of witchcraft, which included personal feuds, jealousy, and greed. Unfortunately, 19 people in Salem were hanged for imaginary crimes. Students discussed the consequences of the witch trials and what lessons we should take from the time period. They did a fantastic job of reenacting two of the trials and writing their own arguments about why the hysteria occurred. At the end of the unit, students watched “The Crucible.” Here’s what a few students had to say about the unit: “I learned that mostly women were prosecuted, because men had most of the power in Salem.” - Luke Hohwieler “I thought it was interesting how most of the accusers were in Salem Village because they were angry at people in Salem Town for having more power than them.” - Luke Morris

Endeavor Elementary Endeavor Enrichment LISA M NORRIS STEM is the future, but it is also very much in the present at Endeavor Elementary. Eager engineers and budding scientists from grades 2 through 5 are putting their creative minds to work in a new after school club called STEM. STEM is an abbreviation for Science Technology Engineering and Math. Under the guidance of 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Amanda Harris, students come together once a month to learn about math and science in creative and hands-on ways. Students are asked to investigate, experiment, and solve a series of mini challenges based on real-world scenarios and experiences. Mrs. Harris hopes this club will allow students the opportunity to think outside the box, show off their creative side, and learn valuable lessons in teamwork. With over 50 participants, it is safe to say this STEM club is already blossoming.

Endeavor Elementary also offers several other clubs to ambitious young minds that are anxious to explore many new opportunities. Tim Stockman leads the Jambo Djembe Club, which is a music performance club that incorporates all elements of music. Lisa Norris leads Expressions and Tiger

Explorer Elementary Explorer Kindergarten Happenings MRS. HUFF, MRS. PEARSON, AND MRS. STILLS Kindergarten Centers - Explorer kindergarten students have been engaging in language art learning centers. Students further their learning in letter recognition, rhyming, and writing while engaging with their peers.

Apple Unit - We spent the month of September learning about apples and John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed). Students did a variety of activities from apple tasting, making applesauce, making caramel apples, and fun apple themed crafts. Kindergarten students learned about the parts of an apple and the things that can be made from apples.

Math - Explorer kindergarten students have been exploring, building, and creating with math tools while engaging in math-focused conversations.

Students have been focusing on activities that include sorting, counting, and observing similarities and differences.

Freedom Elementary Freedom After-School Clubs TYLER MUTH, KYLE KNIPS, RACHEL JUNKER, MEGAN SIEGLE, KATHLEEN PETERSEN After the final bell rings, the hallways fill with students as they file out the doors on their way home after a long day of learning at school. But there are a growing number of kids who have elected to stay after school and participate in one or more of the five extra-curricular clubs offered at Freedom this year.

One of those clubs offered is the Lego Club headed by 5th grade teacher Mr. Muth. There will be two six-week sessions for students in 3rd5th grade. The first session will start either on November 17th, and then after winter break, the second session will start on January 5th. This club will allow students to use their imagination to create and accomplish a variety of challenges using the greatest toy ever invented....the LEGO. “For children who like to build, I believe that Lego bricks have a universal appeal and influence. Lego has a number of appealing options for the elementary age range and beyond,” Mr. Muth said in an interview with me earlier in the year.

This marks the 4th year for Chess Club at Freedom. Mr. Knips, technology integrationist, is again leading the club for students in 2nd-5th grade. The fall session is just underway and there are 22 students participating. “It’s great to have so many kids interested in the game,” remarked Mr. Knips, “Chess is sometimes thought of as a game for adults, but students of all ages can learn to play and practice critical thinking.” At the beginning of the year, students follow along as Mr. Knips teaches them about all the chess pieces and how they move. They then transition into strategy and positioning. At the end of the semester, Chess Club players take on some of our K-5 teachers in our annual Freedom Chess Showdown. They conclude the year with a friendly, but competitive chess tournament with awards going to the winner of each bracket.

The art club at Freedom is also beginning its fourth year. Megan Siegle, Freedom’s art teacher, is again leading the club. The club has changed its structure a bit to accommodate Freedom’s younger second grade artists by offering an

introductory second and third grade Fall session, as well as maintaining a more advanced fourth and fifth grade session in the spring. With nearly forty students participating in one of the two sessions offered, the club is flourishing.

“It’s been great to have an opportunity for enrichment in the visual arts for those students who are very passionate about creating. Art club offers students an experience to work more collaboratively and to establish a sense of comradely amongst each other, which is such a vital part of building an arts community. I love to see the kids get excited and inspired by each other as they work,” remarked Miss Siegle. Art club offers a variety of activities that extend beyond the regular art classroom experience including: T-shirt tie dying, sketchbook-making, building on more advanced clay techniques, as well as some form of a group mural. In the past, the art club has created crayon meltings, experimented with printmaking, and painted pumpkins. “Art club offers students a unique opportunity to be more independent in the direction of their art THE TIGER TIMES • NOVEMBER 2015 • PAGE 17

My hope is to instill in my students a sense of what it really means to think and create like an artist, so that they may independently pursue their interests and curiosities through the creation of art,” commented Miss Siegle about her mission in creating the club. This year the club also hopes to bring in artists from around the community to talk about their work.

A new addition to the Freedom Club’s is the Freedom Music Club. Mrs. Junker is in her third year at Freedom and will be starting her first session of music club on November 5th. Each of the three sessions offers a different musical experience for the students. Session 1 is geared towards music composition. Students will be dabbling with handwriting music to creating their own music with the GarageBand app. The 2nd session focuses on the art of putting on a musical. Students will practice a mini musical and put on the show during their final session (which parents will be able to attend). A favorite returns

in the 3rd session with World Drumming! Students will be exhibiting their improvisational skills and putting together rhythms for various types of music. “Not only are students learning new skills, they are experiencing music in a different way than they do in the classroom,” says Mrs. Junker.

“Music makes students smarter. Drumming alone engages both the left (linear) and right (creative) sides of the brain.” Studies have shown that musical experiences not only improve IQ scores for students, but improve social skills, such as teamwork, self-esteem, and discipline.

4th grade teacher, Mrs. Petersen, is adding yet another club to Freedom this year. 4th and 5th grade students are given some extra time at school to work on homework two days a week. Freedom Homework Club is a great time for students to work on their homework while getting some extra help from a teacher. “I know there are times when it’s hard to get started on homework or you have a question and there is

no one there to answer it. I wanted to be there to help students who might be struggling or just need that extra guidance to complete their homework,” Mrs. Petersen said when asked why she wanted to help with this club. Homework Club will run for six weeks starting the first week of November.

Summer Performing Arts During The School Year?

Yes, it is true! Harrisburg School District’s Summer Performing Arts (SPA) program will be offered to each elementary school this year. The next upcoming session will be at Freedom Elementary and there will be two sessions offered, one course for grades K-2 running after school December 7-10 and a course for grades 3-5 December 14-17. Journey Elementary A Safe Journey MRS. JANEL PRAHM, JOURNEY ELEMENTARY GUIDANCE COUNSELOR School is in full swing and so are our crossing guards at Journey Elementary.

This year we have over 30 fifth grade students who have volunteered their time before and after school to help our students cross Grange and La Quinta streets safely. Students are trained at the beginning of the school year and are very excited to have this opportunity. I would like to take this time to remind those driving in school zones to look for school crossing signs and take extra precautions in those areas. Let’s make it a great school year!

Second Grade Falling Into A Great School Year!

MS. PATTY KROGER Where is the school year going? It was great to see you all at conferences!

I can’t believe how fast the weeks are flying by! We have now settled into a routine and our days seem to go really fast. The kids are all working hard and learning a lot. We are continuing to work on our skill of working independently.

Reading - We are starting our second unit in our anthologies. The stories in this unit are: Animals Building Homes, The Ugly Vegetables, Super Storms, How Chipmunk got his Stripes, and Ocean Life. These are stories that will help us learn about nature and the things around us. We are continuing our Guided Reading groups and the kids are working hard at their individual levels.

Math - We will be starting unit 2 called Shapes, Blocks, and Symmetry. We will be combining shapes, working with 2D and 3D shapes, arrays, and computational fluency. Please keep an eye on papers as they come home to make sure they understand the concept.

Science/Social Studies- We have just finished our unit in Science on working like a scientist and will now be learning about animals and the life cycle.

Handwriting - Handwriting is going well. We have been going over lower case letters. The kids always seem to do well in their books; it’s having them write well all the time that is hard!

Spelling - Most of the kids have been doing well on their weekly spelling.

Keep working on those lists that are sent home and I will reinforce them at school. Stress to your child how important it is to spell these words correctly in their everyday writing also.

MRS. TONDA KIRTON, 5TH GRADE TEACHER AT JOURNEY ELEMENTARY Imagine at age ten, having an opportunity to be the co-captain of an elementary ship! That’s exactly what is in store for fifth grader Hayley Krutsch at Journey Elementary.

Lesson four, in the Harrisburg reading curriculum Journey’s, had a lesson based on running for an elected office. Students constructed a poster outlining the qualities that would enable them to be an exceptional student vice-principal to assist Dr. Highstreet sometime in November. “ I think it will be a learning experience because I will get to go into her office.” Hayley stated enthusiastically after finding out her poster had been selected.

Hayley’s poster outlined her approval of the “Pawsitive Notes” given throughout the school for daily practicing safety, accepting responsibility, working hard, and showing respect. Hayley also noted she is responsible and likes John Maxwell’s quote, “ Teamwork makes the dream work.”

I taught 7 years in Sioux Falls and 10 years on the Rosebud Reservation. I have taught 1st Grade, ELL, SPED, and kindergarten. Family/ Outside of School: I have been married to my husband Christopher for 20 years. Chris teaches 6th grade social studies at HSMS. We have 3 amazing daughters Sheridan (10th grade), RyleeAnn (8th grade), and Devanie (7th grade).

Outside of school I enjoy following the girls in their various activities!

Breann White, K-5 Art - This is my 1st year! Family/ Outside of School: My husband, going-on-three year old son, and our dog love living in the country - going for bike rides and walks, reading and working on the yard outside are our some of our favorite family activities!

Jessi Roggatz, 4/5 Tiger Reserve - This is my 5th year of teaching. All prior years have been in third grade. Two were in a traditional classroom in Norfolk, NE and two were in a Spanish immersion program in Eden Prairie, MN. Family/ Outside of School: I am engaged to Brady and our wedding is next summer. My parents live in MN, my younger sister in Sioux Falls, and my older brother in Aberdeen. I enjoy spending time with them, friends, and Martin, the new puppy at our house. Other hobbies of mine are hiking and baking.

Molly McCollister, 4th Grade - This is my first year official teacher! :) I went to the University of Sioux Falls. I student taught at Journey Elementary in 5th grade, and long-term substituted at Journey for 11 weeks. Family/Outside of School: I have 3 siblings, 4 nieces/nephews (and one on the way!). I have been dating my boyfriend, Eli, for nearly two years. Outside of school I enjoy doing things outside (hiking, fishing, bonfires), watching a good movie, baking, hanging out with friends and traveling.

Bryan Renfrow, P.E./Gym - This is my 4th year teaching P.E. Family/Outside of School: I'm married with one daughter. My wife's name is Alysa and daughter's name is Janessa. I love my family and really enjoy playing sports outside of school. I'm very happy to be apart of Tiger Nation here at Harrisburg.

I live in Sioux Falls with my friend Schandra and her almost twoyear-old son Jaxson who is my godson. I spend a lot of time outside of school spoiling him. In addition, I enjoy camping, boating, and just hanging out with my family and friends.

Amy Kelly (Ms. Amy), Preschool Special Education - 14 years of experience, I always have taught preschoolers. Family/Outside of School: I have a 2 year-old daughter named Ava. I like to spend my time with her and my parents. We love to go to the park, go on bike rides, and read together.
