Board Of Directors Announced For Local Important - Harrisburg Consumer Water/ Food Pantry Sewer Bills In becoming truly a community organization, the Harrisburg Area Food Pantry has established a Board of Directors to oversee all facets of the operation. Beginning January 2015 the following ordinance will be enforced and payment arrangements on utility bills will no longer be honored.

All utility water/sewer bills are due on the twentieth (20th) day of the month.

If bills are not paid by the due date, a twenty (20) percent penalty shall be assessed the following day. If a bill for utility services is not paid in full the customer shall be given notice by mail or by personal service by posting on the property that service shall be terminated within five (5) working days of the date of posting. Harrisburg Community Food Pantry Neighbors Helping Neighbors

During this holiday season, please consider a donation to the Harrisburg Area Food Pantry. We are a non-profit faith based outreach serving Harrisburg and the surrounding area and committed to putting food on the tables of those needing assistance.

Did you know, if you purchase two boxes of cereal, they will cost you in excess of $5. For that same $5, we are able to purchase approximately 24 boxes of cereal through our affiliation with Feeding South Dakota. We are currently able to get hamburger at $.18 a pound so your donation will go a long way to helping others in our community. Since choices and availability of product fluctuate, contributions of food, personal care items and cleaning supplies are always needed and appreciated.

Immediate needs: coffee, vegetable oil, butter, cheese, cleaning supplies, shaving cream, razors.

Items may be dropped off at the Harrisburg United Methodist Church, 204 Grand Ave or the Food Pantry, 203 Prairie St during normal hours of operation. Both are in Harrisburg. Monetary donations can be mailed to the Food Pantry address.

For those who need our services, hours of operation are from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month or by appointment.

We will also be open on Saturday, December 5th from 10:00 am – noon.

2015 In Review, And On To 2016!

The city has had another very busy year, and has a lot of accomplishments to share. In the spring, we held our City Hall Ribbon Cutting in our new building!

We are very pleased to say that the Harrisburg Food Pantry has moved into our old city hall. They are a wonderful organization and it is amazing how the organizers have repurposed the space. Stop by and check them out!

We had another successful annual audit, which was filed with and accepted by the State of South Dakota. That is very complementary and an indication of the continued expertise of our staff! We reviewed and received resident feedback on our municipal ordinances, which we will be adopting early next spring. We also had an outside firm conduct a community wide survey, and look forward to using your input as a guide when prioritizing future projects. Also, check out our new city webpage, which is easier for you to navigate!

On the “quality of life” area, we are pleased to have conducted both a major drainage area and central park design that addresses our “Lake Ole” flooding issues and facilitates our central park plan. We also secured grant funding for a 10ft wide path to be built from Prairie Street to Minnesota Avenue. Grant funded projects may take time to come to fruition but they are worth it in the end. Our neighborhood parks got new trees, grass, and we fixed a lot of playground equipment.

Harrisburg Community Library Corner PHILIP OLINGER Harrisburg Community Library is continuing its effort to best serve the local community, so please come down to 200 E Willow Street and check out our vast selection of books, DVDs, audio books, E-Readers, and Blu-Ray Discs.

January will bring out a new series of community education classes. Snow Alert And Removal Information For The City Of Harrisburg The City of Harrisburg will declare a “Snow Alert” when an accumulation of 2” is either forecast for the city or should the city have no prior forecast warning, when the snow plows are dispatched. This could also include blowing or drifting snow that would require plowing.

All on-street parking shall be prohibited on both sides of the streets, regardless of the directional run of that street. Vehicles left on the street will be ticketed and fined. Parking may resume when streets have been cleared of snow completely from curb to curb.

Ticketing will begin when plows are dispatched which could be any time after the snow alert is issued.

Towing of vehicles, trailers and other appurtenances will start 24 hours AFTER the ticket has been issued.

Tiger Nation wishes everyone in our Tiger community a happy, safe holiday season! Tiger Nation will be celebrating the Christmas holiday with our annual Prairie Christmas performance on Saturday, December 12th at the Performing Arts Center at Harrisburg High School.

All seats are reserved and are being sold Fridays at the high school during the lunch hour, 10:30am through 12noon priced from $7.50 to $10.00.

If seats are still available, tickets will be sold at the door on December 12th. The program, written by our own talent Jeff Gould, our nationally competitive choir performing and led by our director Libbie Gould, will certainly put you into the holiday mood! Baked goods and apple cider will be provided and various holiday raffle items will be available by ticket purchase prior to each performance. See you on the 12th!

One week later, don your Hawaiian gear for Harrisburg’s Hawaiian night during the boys basketball games at Harrisburg High School on Saturday, December 19th. This event features a Winter Cheer Camp for our young girl Tigers wishing to participate in a cheer performance before the Varsity game. Fibber McGee’s will be selling tropical slushies for $5 and the cheerleaders will be selling leis to wear in the gym for the evening.

Mark it down as another successful season for the volleyball squad of Harrisburg High. Finishing the regular season with a 17-3 record, the Tigers fell short to the Brandon Valley Lynx in the District 2AA Championship.

However, the Tigers did not give up there! By defeating the Watertown Arrows in a four game battle in the Region 1AA match, the Tigers sealed the number two seed at the State AA Volleyball Tournament located at the Denny Sanford Premier Center, which eventfully housed all three classes this year. The first round of competition was a match between two Tiger teams; in a four-game series, the Harrisburg Tigers beat the Huron Tigers to move to the winners’ bracket. Playing at the State AA Tournament against high levels of competition on both sides of the net, the Tigers fell short to the Brandon Valley Lynx and the O’Gorman Knights but finished with an admirable fourth place. Our team has learned a lot since the first day of practice on Thursday, August 13, and we find it bittersweet to see our season come to a close. As coaches, we are proud to give our girls a great deal of credit; not only do they have high skill levels on the volleyball court, but they also succeed academically, with an average varsity team GPA at 3.91 on a 4.0 scale. Our players value the importance of mental toughness and putting the success of the team before individual gain. Not to mention, somehow, some way, these girls never cease to put a smile on the coaches’, and of course each other’s, faces. We truly do have the privilege to coach an amazing group of girls, and I know each of them looks forward to returning to the State AA Tournament next year, which will be located in Brookings.

Mrs. Gould’s Harrisburg High School All-State Chorus was in attendance for the 63rd Annual All-State Chorus & Orchestra. This event, co-sponsored by South Dakota High School Activities Association and the South Dakota Music Educators Association, was held in Rapid City, October 30-31. Ending with a Grand Concert at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, this performance is the largest interscholastic music event held in South Dakota. The 2015 All-State Chorus includes 956 singers representing 151 South Dakota high schools. The guest conductor for All-State Chorus was Dr. Peter Eklund from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

Harrisburg FFA Members Receive Free FFA Jackets TODD MARKS, HARRISBURG FFA ADVISOR Receiving your FFA jacket is a proud moment for many FFA members and helps signify that you are officially a member of the organization. With jacket prices, like everything else, on the rise, getting a FFA jacket for free is a great opportunity.

This year, 24 members of the Harrisburg FFA Chapter were able to receive their FFA jackets free of cost through several different programs. The most significant and widely used program Harrisburg members take advantage of is the South Dakota FFA Foundation’s “Blue Jackets – Bright Futures” program. FFA members complete an essay type application and submit it to the FFA Foundation office in September.

This year, 21 members of the Harrisburg chapter submitted and all of them received a free jacket from state and local sponsors! The SD FFA Foundation received enough sponsorship to provide 239 jackets to members in 44 different chapters across South Dakota. Harrisburg FFA member, Alexander Auch summed up the importance of the program as he stated, “ I have been very proud and honored to wear my father’s FFA jacket from the Scotland chapter for the past two years but having my own personal Harrisburg jacket indicates how committed to and proud I am to be a part of this great organization!”

Harrisburg FFA Rocks The National FFA Convention!

TODD MARKS, FFA ADVISOR Louisville here we come!! On Tuesday, October 27th, 10 members of the Harrisburg FFA Chapter ands four chaperones loaded up to attend the 78th National FFA Convention and Career Expo. The National FFA Convention is the largest student run event in the nation with over 65,000 members, instructors, parents, and alumni in attendance.

The first stop of this year’s trip was in Waterloo, IA to visit the John Deere Tractor and Engine Museum. This was a brand new stop for everyone on the trip and we enjoyed the experience. Not only did we see many old tractors and farm machines, we learned a great deal about how new engines and tractors are designed and created. The museum did a great job in showing how manufacturing methods have changed over the years and how much of an impact the John Deere Company has made on the history and the industry of American agriculture.

After driving in the rain for many hours, we finally arrived in Louisville at midnight. The first day of the convention was spent at the career show and expo where over 400 industries, colleges, and businesses representing all facets of agriculture were on hand to help students understand what they did and to help them explore career options.

On Wednesday evening we attended the opening session of the convention, which featured performances by the National FFA Band and Chorus as well as a welcome from the National FFA Advisor, Dr. Steve Brown. The highlight of the opening session was keynote speaker Dr. Rick Rigsby. Dr. Rigsby is an ordained minister and college professor who spent 20 years at Texas A&M University where he was a communications professor as well as motivational coach to the A&M football team. Dr. Rigsby presented a powerful, motivational presentation, which followed the theme of “make an impact, not just an impression.” Dr. Rigsby is one of those rare speakers who has the ability to captivate his audience with humor, sincerity, wit & wisdom where he will have you laughing hysterically one minute and the next, be so real that you are close to tears. Senior FFA Officer, Nathan Harmer said Dr. Rigsby’s speech was one of the highlights of the convention for him and stated, “ Dr. Rigsby was able to his message across using great humor and real world, personal examples.” Dr. Rigsby made a great “impact” on all the Harrisburg members; just ask Alysen Voss about the power of his “special laugh”.

Thursday found the members back at the convention participating in a variety of leadership workshops and seminars. Topics from college scholarships to career opportunities to improving community service were attended by the members. Thursday was also a great day for seeing the sights in Louisville as we visited Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby Museum and then heading downtown to tour the Louisville Slugger Baseball Bat factory and museum. Thursday night we were back at Freedom hall to

watch the “Stars Over America” pageant where 16 members from across the country in four different categories were recognized for having the biggest and best Supervised A g r i c u l t u r a l Experience Projects in the country.

Friday morning our members and chaperones participated in the National Days of Service project held in conjunction with the convention.

Members have the option of assisting with over 15 different community service projects located throughout the city of Louisville. One half of the Harrisburg group helped with landscaping and cleanup projects at one of the Volunteers of America locations in Louisville. Harrisburg members worked with other FFA members from Missouri on this project. The other half of the chapter worked at a men’s mission in downtown Louisville. This mission is located in an old church building and the students and parents volunteering tour out a small wall and removed an old set of wooden seats that was covering the original interior stairs of the church. Harrisburg members worked with other FFA members from Arkansas and Tennessee on this project.

After watching some of the National Finals CDE teams perform, we wrapped up our Louisville experience by visiting Louisville’s famous “Haunted Hotel”!

As it was the night before Halloween, we waited in line over 2 hours but it was well worth it! It was one of the scariest and most fun haunted houses the kids had ever been to. Be sure to ask Sydney Gibson and Miss Viland just how “interactive” the haunted house was!

As an advisor who has been to 34 national conventions, I would rate this year’s trip in the top five and want to thank all the students who attended for being on time, looking and acting professional and representing Harrisburg very well. I would also like to give a special thanks to the parents who attended with us. Mrs. Kim Gibson, Mr. Jesse Harmer, and our student teacher Miss Megan Viland did a great job in sharing the driving time, helping with room checks and simply making the trip a great time. Thanks!

Harrisburg FCCLA Participates In State Farm 2N2 Program During the Months of October and November, the Harrisburg FCCLA Chapter along with Harrisburg’s audiovisual department, helped initiate the 2N2 Campaign through State Farm. Members helped create and launch the campaign to keep 2 eyes on the road and 2 hands on the wheel.

With the campaign, Harrisburg School District was in the running for 1 of 22 $100,000 grant. If Harrisburg wins a grant, money will be used for additional safe driving campaign and service projects within the community.

Ag Class Improves Storage Shed Youth Attend Healthy Living Summit In Huron MRS. TRACY KERN Article written by South Dakota Youth Foundation “YOUth Choose Health!” a healthy living youth leadership initiative began its campaign in Huron on October 21, 2015 at the Huron Events center. The South Dakota Youth Foundation sponsored this event in partnership with Avera Health, Regional Health, Great Plains Tribal Chairman’s Health Board, Human Service Agency, South Dakota Community Foundation, Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, USD School of Nursing, SD Discovery Center, South Dakota Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and Black Hills Surgical Hospital utilizing the collective impact approach. Professional mentors and 13 statewide healthy living youth council members planned and carried out the event.

MS. VILAND, AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION STUDENT TEACHER By the playing fields on the northeast side of the school building stands what used to be a smelly and deteriorating storage shed. It was seen as a potential class project for the ag structures class with Mr. Marks. After presenting his plans and ideas, the OK was given to work on improving this shed. In early October, nine students took the tools to improve the shed.

Jaekob Olson recalls, “when we first opened the doors to the shed, all we could see was clutter. There were down markers just thrown on the ground, a mower deck in the middle of the shed, and a hole in the wall. When I first saw all of this, I thought that the task of cleaning and organizing the shed was a far-fetched idea.”

The sights and space weren’t the only issue in the shed. Austin Alby vividly remembers that “it had the foul odor of putrescine. There was fecal matter everywhere and lots of dust coating everything. We were moving a board and found that there were two live mice present.” Kandice LarsonHeathcote reminisces on the surprise we found while clearing the shed.

With a vision in place, the class began to get to work. One of the first projects was making the interior of the shed less vulnerable to the outdoor environment. “The shed had holes that had to be patched. We just put a board over the hole from the inside and screwed it in place. We also added extra 2x4 secondary studs where there was some give next to the main studs” says Jordan Miller.

After putting secondary studs in, it was time to create the storage shelves.

“We had to do some measuring to figure out how high up we wanted our shelves and how big we had to cut our wood. We did put two large shelves in the back of the shed over top of each other. Then when we completed that, we created a skinny shelf along the side of the wall to place the soccer nets and cones on,”MycKenzie Kuchar recollects.

Holden Niewenhuis remembers putting in a lot of work and thinking on how to get the doors to fit; “we took one of the doors off and brought it into the shop. We moved a 2x4 on the door so it wouldn’t be too far down. Then we took the hand-held belt sander and sanded off about half an inch. Then we found more issues. A lot of the nails holding the trim and the 2x4’s were rusty and made the door loose and flimsy. We decided to fix the trim and put it on straighter. The door looked better and we were confident in knowing it was done the right way”. Then we went to see how the door adjustments fit. Holden said he “made sure the door was perfect, then I finished screwing the hinges on”. Now that the doors fit snugly and opened and closed nicely, the project was complete.

Jacob Klemme summarizes some of the lessons learned by working on the shed. He says it is best to “measure twice, cut once”. He also says “there were new techniques we learned to make do with the space we had in the shed.”

High School National Honor Society Honor’s Veterans MARISA MORRIS Harrisburg High School’s National Honor Society hosted this year’s Veteran’s Day program. The service began with the Presentation of the Colors, the National Anthem, and a few words from NHS President Madeline Gould. The high school choir then sang “Keep the Homefires Burning,” a song about soldiers coming home to a warm welcome. They finished with “To Those Who Serve” to honor the veterans who died in service and those who are still serving. Winners of the Patriot’s Pen and the Voice of Democracy were then awarded by Rick Williamson, head of the Lincoln County VFW. The featured speaker was Ken Teunissen, who served in both Vietnam and Germany, and is a highly decorated veteran of the US Army. He gave a touching speech that brought the audience to their feet. Senior members of NHS read a poem by Joanna Fuchs, entitled The Noble and the Brave: A Veteran's Day Tribute. The high school band then played the military service songs and finished with a piece called “Inchon” in remembrance of the Korean War. The ceremony concluded with cake and punch for community members in attendance, and lots of “thank yous” to the veterans who have kept our country safe and free.

Seventh-grade teacher, Mrs. Andrews, has started a men’s volleyball league at HNMS school.

Andrews says that sixth through eighth graders are able to participate in the school sport.

The mile is a four-lap run that all students at HNMS have to run every quarter. Some students find it as the highlight of the quarter. For others it’s the worst time of the year.

Andrew H says that it all depends on the weather.

Actually a lot of people signed up, even I did, I asked Elijah O. if he thought volleyball was fun and he stated.

“Yeah I love it, it’s fun. It is good exercise.”

Currently, there are more seventh graders doing volleyball than there are eighth and sixth graders combined. I asked Hayden V. if volleyball was hard he said, “Yeah I think it’s hard, and it’s hard because you have to learn stuff that you have never learned before, such as you have to move your feet to get a better spike, and it’s hard to angle the way you want to pass to your teammate.

Their first game is on Friday in an interclub tournament. Will it continue next year?

He states, “ If it’s windy, I don’t like it because you have to run against the wind, but if it’s nice its okay, easy to run.”

This is the case for a lot of kids attending Harrisburg North Middle school. On the other hand though, kids also find it to be horrible.

This is the case for Allie L, who says,“ it’s just really tiring and I feel like it takes all the energy out of you to keep on learning effectively for the rest of the day.”

This is a good point to bring into the controversy on the topic. Some kids say that it is hard to breath after the mile and it takes all the breath out of them. Others say it causes soreness, but isn’t that a given in sports? Just a thought. A big factor on this also would be that some kids

Fine Arts At NMS LAUREN WILLIAMS, ZACH SCHULTZ, MAGGIE WIPF, ARYSSA BARAAN, MADDIE REYNOLDS These past few weeks have been pretty hectic for the students in theater at Harrisburg North Middle School as they prepared for their musical, “Back to the 80’s.” In this production, Corey Palmer, played by both Josh Muth and Dawson Lee, looks back on his high school experience. They

are more just simply more athletic than others. Is it fair to make those not so athletic kids run it? The mile will always be the high for some and the low for others, and it will always be that way

HEIDI STREIT AND AMANDA OLINGER Last week, the sixth-grade advanced English language classes finished a novel study of the text, The Red Kayak. In the novel, the main characters carried out a prank that went awry. This impactful text helped students understand the repercussions for their actions along with the powerful impact of choices.

After the class study of the novel, Mrs. Streit’s students participated in a mock trial for the characters in the novel. In this activity, students analyzed the actions of the characters, weighed them with the effect of their actions, and assigned each character a sentence. The sentences varied

Isabelle states, “that there should be after-school sports to help kids stay in shape.”

The climate is moderately warm in November; people wear shorts at home in November, so why can’t we wear them in school? Shorts are comfortable and they are not as warm as pants. Shorts can be a problem, too. It could be cold so pants could be better for outside wear, but shorts are better for inside wear so your legs don’t get too warm.

Although, Andrew S. says, “There shouldn’t be because it takes kids’ minds off of school and people can’t get their homework done.”

Kids grew up with sports, and that is why I think we should keep it that way. Sports include, swimming, baseball, gymnastics, basketball, soccer, and many more! People who play after school sports get their homework done because they take a break from school to do something they enjoy. Sports is an important of formal education, and I want every other student to take advantage of them as well.

Mrs. Streit talked about the abundance of learning that came from the mock trial and the interview with Officer Runyan. “Student’s became more aware and insightful about how every choice they make has an outcome: good or bad.” This goes hand in hand with the theme for the year, which is ‘Choices.’

Patriot’s Pen CHRIS SNYDER In November, the middle schoolers wrote their Patriot’s Pen essays, sponsored by the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars). This year’s theme is “What Freedom Means to Me.” Students are judged on their knowledge of the theme, theme development, and clarity of ideas. After a variety of classroom activities, research, and peer revision, students submitted a 300-400 word typewritten essay.

Grade level winners and ultimately a district winner will soon be announced. That winner will advanced to the VFW Department (state) level. The one first-place winner at the Department level is then advanced into the VFW national competition. The winner from each Department (state) then competes for the national prizes.

The national winners will receive at least $500. The first-place national award is currently $5,000 plus an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the winner and a parent or guardian.

The next time you’re caught with Jack Frost nipping at your nose, and need some quality family time, gather around the table and give these spirited DIY crafts a try.

How to Make Miniature Reindeer What you will need: • Popsicle sticks • Brown construction paper • Small red pompoms • Googly eyes • Brown pipe cleaners (one large, one cut in half for antlers) • Red string • Hot glue gun

Directions • Glue three popsicle sticks into a triangle • Cut the brown construction paper into a triangle the same size as your popsicle stick triangle • Glue it to the popsicle sticks (cut to make the edges the same size if needed • Glue the googly eyes in the center to the construction paper and red pom pom to the point of the triangle to the opposite side of the eyes • Twist a pipe cleaner around the top of the triangle leaving exes on both sides • Attach the small pipe cleaners (one on each side) to the exes large pipe cleaner • Tie the red ribbon to the twisted pipe cleaner

Surveying Christmas Cheer TESSA PEDERSON, THIAGO FALCO, ADDISEN JENSEN, MIA TJADEN Christmas is a wonderful time of year,but it is connected to some tough decisions, like what cookies to make or what type of present to buy your child. We had forty-one students take a survey to make your Christmas a little more fun and a little more educational.

First off, let us talk about the best part of this joyful holiday: not presents, not Saint Nick, but the food. Kids love their sweets, and we had kids tell us what their favorite types of cookies were. We gave them four options, peanut butter, snickerdoodle, sugar cookie, or a chocolate chip cookie.

Sugar cookies and chocolate chip cookies tied for first place with 30% of the respondents voting them as their top cookies, and snickerdoodle and peanut butter cookies also tied with 20% of the votes. Our survey led us to the conclusion that the students at HNMS love sugar cookies and chocolate chip cookies; so a successful Christmas treat would be to whip up a batch of either of these delicious treats.

Another holiday challenge is finding the perfect gift for your child, but our survey will help you make the best gift giving decision. HNMS students had four gift options to pick on the survey: electronics, clothing, money, or gift cards. Our survey found that roughly 21% of the students said they would prefer to get electronics or gift cards, so either of those options are probably a good gift. Stay out of the clothing aisle, as only 3% of the students say they prefer to get clothing, but if you really want to hit a home-run this Christmas, just stop at the bank, as 48% of the students say they would prefer money for a gift.

While this survey hopefully helps you with those hard-to-make decisions this holiday, we are pretty positive that no matter how you spend the holiday you will probably enjoy it. Whether you’re going to Florida or your Grandparents, eating peanut butter or snickerdoodle cookies, receiving money or clothes, enjoying a tradition or not, have a Merry Christmas!

Endeavor Elementary Certified Kind Classroom LISA NORRIS Team Norris started the year by reading the book Wonder, by R.J. Palacio. The book is about a boy that is born with a face that horrifies most people. He is home-schooled and goes through a number of surgeries. As he is about to enter the 5th grade, he starts to attend a public school. The story talks about the struggles of fitting in, bullying, acceptance and most importantly…kindness.

We then accepted the author’s challenge. The challenge was to have our team do multiple acts of kindness to fill a marble jar. 1kind deed=1marble. We completed our task and received a “Certified Kind Classroom “ banner. We are continuing the kindness theme by having a “40 Days Of Kindness” countdown to Christmas. We challenge you to join us in our quest. We want to make the world a better place, with one act of kindness at a time.

Hullabaloo Huge Success LISA M NORRIS Endeavor Elementary PTO sponsored their third annual Harvest Hullabaloo on Oct. 23rd. The goal of the evening was to raise enough funds for microscopes for the school. The PTO provided carnival games, pizza, inflatables, a sock hop, bake sale and grab bags. There was an amazing turn out for the event and lots of volunteers donated their time and talents. Thanks to the efforts of everyone involved, enough money was raised to purchase 13 Boreal2 microscopes for students, as well as 2 teaching microscopes that produce a live image display. We are very excited to implement the microscopes into the Science curriculum! Great job Endeavor Elementary!

2nd Grade Team And Mrs. Van’t Hul Liberty Second graders have been very busy this Fall. In November, we celebrated Veterans Day with a guest speaker and learned how to show respect to those that serve our country. We learned about Thanksgiving past and present, and we made turkey’s with geoblocks to review the geometric shapes we learned in math. We also practiced and performed the play “The ABC’s Of The First Thanksgiving” for our parents. In December, we will learn about different countries, cultures, and customs in our Christmas Around The World unit.

Liberty Elementary celebrated Red Ribbon Week the last week of October. This week was designed for students and staff to celebrate being drug free. Students learned about the harmful effects of drugs and having pride in making good choices.

Students and staff participated in dress up days and 2nd grade had the privilege of a guest speaker who was a Drug Enforcement Agent.

I will show you how to make a gingerbread house.

First, you will need a plate, some bowls for the candy, and a butter knife. You will, also, need a lot of candy canes a lot of chocolate and vanilla iceing, a lot of licorice for the fence, a lot of muffins for the trees, a lot of lollipops for some more trees, a lot of gummy bears for the people, gingerbread for the house. Next, you will need to sort the stuff like this….put candy in the right bowls and put the gingerbread on a towel. Put the iceing on a paper towel too. Then, put the pieces together with vanilla or chocolate icing. Next, you will decorate the house how ever you want. Last, put the candy on the house. Then put on lege and stand back and look.

Rock-N-Rolling On The 50th Day Of School NICHOLE DREXLER Liberty first grade teachers, Kelly Enebo, Courtney Sattler, Megan Kockx, Kate Hanson, and student teacher Arielle Titze rocked and rolled through the 50th day of school with their students on Monday, November 9th 2015. Teachers planned a fun filled day where students dressed in their best fifties attire, enjoyed floats and completed many activities centered around the number 50. This has been an annual tradition the last six years at Liberty Elementary.

Liberty Elementary – Embracing The Community NICHOLE DREXLER On November 19th, a group of fifth grade students volunteered their time to help serve Liberty’s Senior Citizen’s Turkey Dinner. Liberty Elementary has offered a Turkey Dinner to senior citizens of the Harrisburg Community for many years. The delicious meal prepared by the Liberty Elementary kitchen staff consisted of roast turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, stuffing, green beans, a dinner roll, and a pumpkin treat.

Liberty fifth grade students; Isaac, Bella, Ava, Zachary, Abbigail, Logan, Hannah and Peyton served this lovely meal along with help from Chris Beach, District’s Child Nutrition Director and Dr. Jackie McNamara, the Liberty Elementary Principal. Liberty students created beautiful placemats to use at each table setting in Art with Mrs. White, Art teacher. Mrs. Passick and the Liberty kindergarten students performed “Things I am Thankful For” and “Five Fat Turkeys” for all who attended.

A big thank you goes out to all who helped put on these wonderful community events.

Journey Elementary Engineering Fun In First Grade MRS. DEB BURWITZ, JOURNEY 1ST GRADE TEACHER As part of the new science standards of South Dakota students in Mrs. Burwitz’s class participated in engineering design practices through three different projects. Their first project was working as a team to design a landing pad for a hard-boiled egg dropped from four feet. All the teams were successful in their first attempt! They were challenged to see if they could improve their landing pad based on what they observed in the first test. The students had noticed the egg had bounced and worked to see if they could redesign to stop it from potentially bouncing and hitting the floor. One group decided to roll tape and put it on top of the pad so the egg would stick and not bounce. It worked beautifully.

The second project was to see if they could take one piece of construction paper and use tape to make a structure that would hold up their reading book. Through trial and error they learned that cylinders are very strong structures. Finally the first graders designed paper airplanes to see if they could launch them twenty-five feet. That is a long way for a paper airplane!

Many designs were tried with victory and defeat occurring but everyone enjoyed engineering designing!

Kindergarteners Rock The 50’s!

KILEY NIELSEN, JOURNEY KINDERGARTEN TEACHER On Monday, November 9th, Kindergarteners at Journey Elementary had officially been in school for 50 days! We were so excited to be 50 days smarter that we decided to celebrate the 50th day by dressing up like we were living in the 1950’s. Between the black leather jackets, white t-shirts, cuffed jeans, scarves, and poodle skirts there was not a minute that we weren’t living the part. We enjoyed doing 50’s day activities such as “Rockn-Roll” Patterns in Math, “If I lived in the 1950’s” writing prompts, and some fun 50’s themed art projects. To end our 50’s day bash we learned the Hand Jive and enjoyed Root Beer Floats! What a blast to the past we had going back to the 1950’s!

Thanks To Those Who Serve SANDIE CHILDS, JOURNEY ART TEACHER Journey students and staff were honored to have 15 military servicemen and servicewomen from their families join them for lunch on Veteran’s Day. Posters and student made cards of appreciation were presented to them, with many students also shaking their hands and offering their personal thanks. Thank you veterans and servicemen and women.
