Your artistic instructor will walk you one baby step at a time through any painting from our gallery using simple techniques. Our motto is ”Yes you can! We’ll show you how.” You won’t even have to worry about knowing the lingo ahead of time. We will be happy to define our technical terms like blob, dab and smoosh as we all glide through the projects together.

Some sessions even have a stencil option to ease your worry.

Alright, we admit that one After 5 Art Party won’t qualify you to join a crew painting the Sistine Chapel. Odds are good that you’ll surprise yourself though. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that we get together to have fun. To that end, you might find that your art guru cracks jokes, leads short sing alongs and even encourages your group to heckle. Then, at the end of a fun-filled evening you will have had a fabulous time and be able to take home a work of art painted by you. How often does that happen?

Another cool tidbit about us is due to an effort to keep our costs low, we are able to offer session party seats for an average of $10 less per person then our competitors. Awesome sauce!

If you are a low-to-moderate income worker, you can take steps now to save two ways for the same amount. With the saver’s credit/retirement savings contributions credit you can save for your retirement and save on your taxes with a special tax credit.

The saver’s credit can increase your refund or reduce the tax you owe. The maximum credit is $1,000, or $2,000 for married couples. The credit you receive is often much less, due in part because of the deductions and other credits you may claim. If you’re eligible you still have time to contribute and get the saver’s credit on your 2014 tax return. You have until April 15, 2015, to set up a new IRA or add money to an existing IRA for 2014. Consult a tax preparer for income limits and questions.

Snow Alert Policy The City of Harrisburg will declare a “Snow Alert” when an accumulation of 2” is either forecast for the city or should the city have no prior forecast warning, when the snow plows are dispatched. This could also include blowing or drifting snow that would require plowing.

All on-street parking shall be prohibited on both sides of the street, regardless of the directional run of that street until it has been plowed curb to curb. Section 14: Obstructing snow removal and street cleaning.

No vehicle shall be parked in such a manner or for such a period of time as to unreasonably interfere with or obstruct the removal of snow from, or the cleaning of, the streets in the city. Parking may resume when streets have been cleared of snow completely from curb to curb.

Ticketing will begin when plows are dispatched which could be anytime after the snow alert is issued. Towing of vehicles, trailers and other appurtenances will begin approximately 24 hours after the ticket has been issued.

It is each resident’s responsibility to keep your sidewalks clear of snow and ice. Blowing, pushing, shoveling or placing snow onto the roadways is not permitted. These policies will be enforced on a per-call basis.

Please exercise common sense during the winter plowing season and respect the plows.

HELEN SHORT The music department is proud to announce that twenty students will be performing in the SDSU Elementary Honor Choir. The festival will take place in Brookings on February 12, 2015. Guest conductor is Tom T. Shelton Jr. Tom is a native of Greensboro, N.C., and a graduate of the University of North Carolina. He is Assistant Professor of Sacred Music at Westminster Choir College. Focusing on children’s and youth music at Westminster, he teaches classes in conducting, sacred music and music education. He was selected as Teacher of the Year while teaching in the public schools. In 1999 the North Carolina Music Educator’s Association presented him with the North Carolina Middle School Music Teacher of the Year award.

Leadership Class Does Community Service

The Leadership Class did its quarterly community service day on Wednesday, December 10, 2014. The students spent the morning ringing bells for the Salvation Army at the HyVee on Minnesota Avenue.

Despite the chilly weather, the students kept up their spirits as donations came in and hot chocolate was enjoyed. They even were asked to appear in a story for KELO-TV! In the afternoon the students made fleece tie blankets and took them to be used at the Children’s Inn shelter. Service to others is an important part of Leadership, and this group truly measured up to that standard.

December was not as busy with activities and fundraisers as the other months for the members of HOSA. However, it was a month that allowed for a lot of learning.

Over 20 members were taught respiratory care through CPR classes and became certified as a result. Twenty underclassmen took part of Avera All Access Day where they learned about the Avera Heart Hospital and the Genomics Institute. In addition, competitors in the HOSA event of ‘Clinical Nursing’ and ‘Clinical Specialty,’ have been shadowing and practicing special skills - learning everything they need to know about being a health professional. Now, educational opportunities weren’t the only thing to stem from this month.

December also allowed for the act of giving and sharing with the Harrisburg community. From the beginning of the month to the end of the semester, Harrisburg HOSA went head-to-head against DECA, StuCO, FFA, and FCCLA in a food drive challenge where all the proceeds go to the food pantry in town. Along with this, HOSA also participated in the annual HHS Angel Tree fundraiser, buying gifts and toys for struggling families within the community.

December 7 & 8, 24 members of the Harrisburg FFA and Advisors Todd Marks and Tara Fastert attended the South Dakota State FFA Leadership CDE’s in Pierre. To qualify for the state CDE’s, members must place in the top 3 individuals or top 2 teams at their District competition. Each team CDE had 14 teams at state and each individual CDE had 21 individuals. Harrisburg was well represented and had a very successful weekend.

The chapter would like to extend a sincere and special thank you to Danny Harris for driving the bus to Pierre and to Mrs. Jill Stucky and Mr. Dan McAllister for accompanying us as chaperones. All three of these individuals did a great job keeping the kids organized and getting them to events on time while the advisors were busy with meetings.

In the Agricultural Issues CDE, the Harrisburg team placed 3rd in the State.

Agricultural Issues is a competition where the team members research an issue relating to agriculture in their state. The Harrisburg team chose the topic of beef breeding systems and presented the pros and cons of natural breeding versus artificial insemination. Team members from Harrisburg are Sydney Hirschkorn, Zach Gross, Rowdy Hillmer, Ashlynne Beninnga, McKenzye Gunderson, Hannah Lane, and Ben Ostebee.

The senior parliamentary procedure team also placed 3rd in the state competition. Parliamentary procedure demonstrates the proper way to conduct a business meeting and members are scored on a written test, their ability to discuss a given topic, on the written minutes of the meeting, and how well they demonstrate how to perform specific parliamentary abilities. All within a 15-minute time limit. All 14 teams compete in two different groups on Sunday evening and the top three teams from each group advance to the final round on Monday morning. The Harrisburg team consisted of President; Grace Aasheim, Vice-President; Nicole Hudson, Secretary; Anna McAllister, Reporter; Alexander Auch, Treasurer; Connor McAllister, Student Advisor; Karlie Westall, and Sentinel; Matt Hudson.

The junior parliamentary procedure CDE is very similar to the senior competition except that the team is made up of all freshmen and they do not have to take a written test or write a set of meeting minutes.

Harrisburg’s freshmen did an outstanding job by placing 5th at the State CDE. Team members for this event are President; Abigail Bushar, VicePresident; Kelsie Spotanske, Secretary; Jessica Cain, Reporter; Natalie Christensen, Treasurer; Mason Stucky, Student Advisor; Lauren Schenetter, and Sentinel; Noah Hovorka.

Also attending from Harrisburg were freshmen Cassidy Rippentrop who finished 9th in the Creed Speaking CDE and junior Ben Ostebee who participated in the Extemporaneous Speaking CDE. The HHS Debate captured the Efficiency Sweepstakes November 22 at the Mitchell McGovern invitational! The award goes to the team with the highest squad efficiency rating by figuring the sweepstakes points divided by number of entries Junior Manaal Ali led the way with a first place in Non-Original Oratory and a disputed first place in JV Public Forum with partner Jordann Krouse. Harrisburg Novice Debaters Invite Others Over For Lunch The Harrisburg HS debate team hosted a novice afterschool meet on December 2 for first –year competitors at HHS. The team hosted seven schools from Sioux Falls and the surrounding area.

The contest included divisions in policy debate, Lincoln Douglas debate, and public forum (PF) debate. HHS competes in the public forum division.

HHS ate up the competition and captured the first five places in PF with four teams going undefeated. Audra Nickel and Hayden Cole finished undefeated and with the highest speaker points out of the 29-team field. Nickel had perfect speaker points for each of the four rounds and was the top speaker in the tournament across all divisions.

Other undefeated HHS teams included Landon Dinger as a solo competitor, Cody Schriever and Claire Tufty, and Ben Menke and Hallie Sagness. Finishing in fifth place were Jack Olson and Evan Papka with a 3-1 record. Rounding out the award winners for the day were the 3-1 teams of Rachel Nelson and Megan Yee and Allyson Kowalski and Alexis Janssen. All seven teams finished in the top eleven positions out of twenty-nine entries.

Middle School Letter To 8th Grade Parents From Harrisburg High School Principal Dear Eighth Grade Parents: Recently, I have held seven question and answer sessions at the high school in regard to the MOD/CL program. Attendance at these sessions has been minimal. If the lack of participation is an indication of satisfaction and trust, I am enthused and gratuitous. However, I am uneasy for the future if all questions have not been answered. Parents will be asked in a couple of months to make a very important decision. Information and understanding are key to that choice.

February 25th, all students of the Classes of 2017, 18, 19(this year’s sophomores, freshmen and eighth grade classes) will be asked to make a firm decision regarding their enrollment in the MOD/CL or the traditional classroom. We will ask that this decision be well-thought out and a final commitment from parents and students with academic rationale and success as the only factor. This is important for many reasons, not the least of which is parental support and advocacy at home. As you can imagine, our planning for next year depends upon your factually supported direction. Our orientation for students in the spring, our hiring processes, our curricular development are dependent on the number and identity of students in each program.

To make your decision, you need as much understanding of this program and high school in general as possible. I invite you to do three things: 1. Please attend a question and answer session.

The MOD/CL is a precipitous change. HHS would never have chosen this path had we not a deep belief it is a system with great merit, backed by research and a fit for our students and community. However, you are the one that has to feel comfortable with this program. Get all the information necessary to make a good choice in February.

8th Grade Team

As part of 8th Grade Encore Family and Consumer Science at HSMS, students are exposed to and explore a variety of career options.

Recently we examined careers of the past, the present and the future.

Students then had to determine what career choices they might have during that time period. For example, past careers discussed included blacksmith and milkman. Current careers listed included banker, doctor and nursing. For the future students determined that all careers would need a strong science, technology, engineering and math background.

Special thanks to Adam Learing from STEMFuse, LLC of Brandon, SD for also coming to speak to students about career opportunities and entrepreneurship. He focused on preparing for the world of work beyond high school. The most important message Adam shared was to find something you are passionate about and love to do.

The 8th grade team has taken on the task of teaching social skills to our students. The team discussed what are the “must have” social skills for students to be productive members within the school. The identified skills are Following Directions, Being Prepared for Class, Accepting Decisions of Authority, Participating in a Group Discussion and Showing Respect. Each week, Mr. Rieck came to individual advisories to cover each social skill through group discussions and dialog. He discussed real world situations where adults need to use these socials skills as well as times when students need to use these social skills. All the students stated it was the greatest experience of their lives.

6th Grade Students Study Archery JIM STOEBNER For the second December in a row the Harrisburg South Middle School gym class is doing an Archery Unit. Archery equipment was given free to each Harrisburg school when the P.E. teachers from each school attended a clinic put on by the National Archery Federation.

Archery can be a very fun sport. It is also a lifetime sport that is already enjoyed by many of our middle school students. Many students are already in archery clubs around the area.

There are a few things that students had to be reminded of, and because of that, the classes spent the first day reviewing. We talked about parts of the bow and arrow. We practiced with a string to simulate shooting a bow. We went through different whistle commands so everyone is on the same page when shooting. We ended up showing proper technique of retrieving the bow from the target.

We will continue on our archery through the month of December. As we get further along we will continue to increase the distance of our shooting range.

Activities in their learning experience included the students creating a “Family and Tradition” project to share with their classmates, locating and mapping their country of ancestry, and a participating in a “multi-cultural potluck” for which each student brought a traditional family recipe to share.

A Feast Of Friends MRS. DANAE WIEKING, 4TH JOURNEY 4TH GRADE TEACHER On Monday, November 24th Mrs. Wieking’s 4th grade class participated in a classroom feast. A couple of weeks prior to the feast the class came together to plan the menu. Some offered to bring plates while another offered to bring the turkey. All of it being important to have at a feast.

The students also researched about Thanksgiving and the Mayflower.

Parents were invited to attend the feast. It was a time of feasting and giving thanks. Before the class was able to eat, each student had to share something they were thankful for. Mrs. Wieking was/is thankful for an amazing group of students at Journey Elementary.

HOSA is a student organization at HHS focused on developing future healthcare professionals giving leadership opportunities, career explorations, and involving them in community awareness and outreach.

Giving Thanks In Kindergarten MISS ABBY POSTMA When walking through the Kindergarten hallway at Journey Elementary it is quite clear to any visitor that it is Thanksgiving time! What does Thanksgiving mean in Kindergarten? It means it is time for the annual performance of “ABC’s of the First Thanksgiving” a skit put on by all of the Kindergarteners.

There are a number of steps each teacher needs to do before the big performance day. Step one is to assign the parts. The teachers pick out the parts for their students, send those parts home, and have families practice the part together. Step two is to pick a date in hopes that all family members can attend the show. Step three is very important. Teachers cannot forget to glitter the alphabet letters! These letters add a little glitz and glam to the show!

Step four is to put together a brief video for the end of the show. For the video the teachers ask each student what he or she is thankful for and add a song to bring it to life. Step five you ask? Step five is to practice, practice, practice until the performance day! Step six is finally the big performance!

Teachers get rid of the nerves and jitters and remind the students that he or she will do a wonderful job! After the show all the guests and students are able to enjoy juice and cookies and relax in the classroom.

Each Kindergarten class did an amazing job with their performance of “ABC’s of the First Thanksgiving”. The students really enjoyed learning about the pilgrims, their voyage to the America’s, and the help they received from the Native American people. Our hats go off to each Kindergarten student for the amazing job they did!

1st Grade Goes QR Crazy MRS. MARTA HOFFMAN, JOURNEY ELEMENTARY COMPUTER INTEGRATIONIST So what is a QR code? It’s short for “Quick Response” and it is usually in the shape of a square. It looks like a bar code with black splotches instead of lines. In the classroom the students use an iPad app such as Scanner to scan the code. It can read a book, show a video, give written or verbal directions, or show an answer to a question. This fall the Journey First Graders used their QR codes to do math scavenger hunt and listen to Thanksgiving books. Explorer Elementary Veteran’s Day Celebration Veteran's Day Program at Explorer Elementary Jeanine Murphy, Stefanie Reiffenberger and Kristin Tronbak On Veteran's Day Explorer Elementary held a Veteran's Day program. The school invited family members who have served or are currently serving to come share their experiences.

The student council performed a short skit under the direction of Mrs. VanderZwaag. Several music groups performed musical selections under the direction of Mrs. Short. The Veterans had an opportunity to introduce themselves and tell what branch of military they served under, how many years they served and where they were stationed. This was a great way for Explorer Elementary students to understand the true meaning of Veteran's Day.

Freedom Elementary Career Café Andrea Junker, Guidance Counselor Part of FreedomElementary’s Comprehensive School Counseling Program focuses on introducing and exposing students to different career clusters.

Through Guidance classes with Mrs. Andrea Junker, all fourth and fifth graders are matched up with their top three career clusters based on an interest inventory they completed. Fourth and fifth graders spent most of September in Guidance getting matched up with and learning about the sixteen different career clusters. Throughout the school year, Mrs. Junker has professionals (one from each of the career clusters) from the Harrisburg/Sioux Falls area speak about their career during Career Café.

Fourth and fifth graders are invited to attend Career Café to learn about their top three career clusters on Wednesdays throughout the year during their lunch, hence the name Career Café!

Liberty Elementary Liberty – Gift Of Giving NICHOLE DREXLER AND JEN VAN’T HUL To celebrate the holiday season students at Liberty Elementary School are giving back to the community in a variety of ways. First and third graders teamed up to give donations to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society.

Items that were donated were dog and cat food/treats, grooming supplies, collars and leashes, animal toys, bird feed, towels, dish soap and clean baby socks. Students were very excited to participate in this kind and caring act of giving back to the community. They felt happy to be able to help any and all animals in need of a home during the holiday season. Liberty Student Council members delivered the items to Humane Society prior to the Christmas holiday.

Teachers are having students focus on giving this holiday season. Second grade students donated toys and books to both Sanford and Avera Children’s Hospitals. Our own Liberty Student Council gave children who are currently staying in the hospitals this holiday season stuffed animals to cherish and cuddle. This project was called ‘Share a Bear’. Student Council visited children in the hospital prior to Christmas break.

In November, students presented a Veteran’s Day program to all citizens of the community. Mrs. Passick, Liberty Music Teacher, conducted the program with musical selections sung by all grade levels, a flag ceremony and short speeches given by students reciting why we celebrate Veteran’s Day. On November 20th, students volunteered their time to help with Liberty’s Senior Citizen’s Turkey Dinner. Liberty Elementary has offered a Turkey Dinner to senior citizens of the Harrisburg Community for many years. The delicious meal prepared by the Liberty Elementary kitchen staff consisted of roast turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, stuffing, green beans, a dinner roll, and a pumpkin treat.

Liberty fifth grade students served this lovely meal along with help from Chris Beach, District’s Child Nutrition Director and Dr. Jackie McNamara, the Liberty Elementary Principal. Students created beautiful place mats to use at each table setting in Art with Mr. Yates, Art teacher. Mrs. Passick and the Liberty kindergarten students performed “Wintertime” and “Jingle Jive” for all who attended.

A big thank you goes out to all who helped put on these wonderful community events.

Cub’s Closet JENNIFER VAN’T HUL Student Council is sponsoring a Clothing Exchange better known as Cub’s Closet again this fall. Clean clothing that is in good condition will be accepted as donations sizes infant through 14 youth/small adult. This would include school appropriate fall/winter clothing as well as winter gear (boots, gloves, hats, snow pants, coats). Donations can be brought to the office or directly to the School Counselor. All clothing will be set up in the Parent Library (in the entry way across from the office). There was a Grand Opening Monday October 27 at 3:15 pm.

Students with higher needs were given first priority before the Grand Opening.

You do not need to make a donation to take something. Anyone will be able to take whatever items they find at no cost. Parents can come to Cub’s Closet at anytime during school hours. Students must be accompanied by an adult or by appointment with the School Counselor.

Liberty Problem Patrol JENNIFER VAN’T HUL Liberty Student Council is working on a Positive Peer Culture Program. The Problem Patrol is a group of 4th and 5th grade students who have an area of the playground in the morning before school that they walk around looking for opportunities to be a positive role model. The students have been trained in conflict resolution and when it is more appropriate to seek adult assistance. Each student volunteer on the Problem Patrol will have a shift one day a week from 7:50 am until all students have entered the building. All elected and honorary members are eligible to participate.

Students from two Liberty Elementary classes are participating in a “doggone” fun reading program during their library time. The program is called Tail Waggin’ Tutors which is provided through Therapy Dogs International. “The main objective of this program is to provide a relaxed and “dog-friendly” atmosphere, which allows students to practice the skill of reading. By sitting down next to a dog and reading to the dog, all threats of being judged are put aside. The child relaxes, pats the attentive dog, and focuses on the reading. Reading improves because the child is practicing the skill of reading, building self-esteem, and associating reading with something pleasant.” (Information from Therapy Dogs International)

Students in the Tiger Reserve program at Liberty Elementary School held a Tiger Museum for visitors, parents and other classes to visit and learn more about the terrific animal – THE TIGER, which is also our Harrisburg School Districts mascot. Students created activities and presentations on specific information about tigers, examples were tiger communication, behavior of adult tigers, tiger anatomy, timeline of extinction, different types of tigers, tigers in culture, tigers in captivity and tiger habitats.

Animals In Action – Tiger Reserve LYNN LAPE AND NICHOLE DREXLER Animals from crickets to bunnies invaded Liberty Elementary School on December 5th. Students in the Tiger Reserve program from Endeavor and Liberty had a day of hands on learning called ‘Animals in Action’. Small animals such as crickets to larger animals like gerbils, bunnies and rats helped students learn how to conduct a science experiment using the scientific method. Students were very excited to observe these creatures.
